Racing in Sydney... check out Menagle. Tabcorp Park Menagle, as a sporting venue, is far more than just a racetrack: it is an institution founded by distinguished pioneers who were farming and racing horses for fun in this glorious, pastoral setting long before Melbourne – for example – was even thought of. Tabcorp Park Menagle has made its mark on the Australian harness racing scene and can now be acclaimed as one of the best in the world after the majestic SMOKEN UP recorded the first sub 1:50 mile in the southern hemisphere with his scintillating 1:48.5 in the Tabcorp Len Smith Mile in April 2011. It has recently gone through a complete refurbishment and hosts some of the countries biggest races... A must Visit!

Estelle Curd
Who or what inspires you? My mother is my inspiration. She is a strong, honest and beautiful person. Her ability to see the positive in any situation has lead me to understand that a positive attitude and determination can lead to any goal being achieved. Everyone makes mistakes, but it is how we manage these set backs that determines what we can achieve moving forward. What is beauty according to you? Beauty is more than what a person aesthetically views. Its is a combination of attributes that are more than skin deep. For me, qualities such as confidence, intellect, respect and compassion are far more beautiful than what can be seen on the surface.

W
hat a beautiful country we live in! Even in the middle of winter, New Zealand has beautiful crisp mornings and clear sunny days. It’s pretty easy to love our seasons. Our cover was shot on a cold winter evening in the Auckland Domain with Miss New Zealand contestant Estelle Curd wrapped in stunning rugs by Designer Rugs in Parnell. Our flip side cover features Palmers Garden Centre in Remuera with their gorgeous purple flowers, Topiary trees and water feature. We are an island that has over 60 million sheep, more sheep than people! We produce some of the most beautiful wool creations, whether it’s a rug from designer rugs or a jersey from Tolaga Bay. See our favourite woolies on pages 76 to 81. For those wanting to indulge in the beautiful winter scenery new Zealand has, there is no better place than Queenstown, an inspiring and revitalizing location. See all Queenstown has to offer on pages 69 to 75. The cold weather isn’t for everyone though, and for those wanting to escape, there’s no better place than the Pacific Islands. Pop over for an island visit and indulge in some vitamin D, fresh fruit, sun, sand and cocktails. Pages 56 to 74 has some stunning places for you to stay like Aitutaki Lagoon and The Rarotongan. We also highlight everything Australia has to offer on pages 83 to 93. “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” - Jimmy Dean Glamour Boutique White Amelie Beachwood Leather Satchel $589 .00 www.glamourboutique.co.nz
Taylor Smith If there is one thing you could do to change the world what would it be? If I could change one thing about our world, it would be to create everyone equal. I’m not saying that everyone should be the same; but we should just have equality for our individuality and uniqueness. What is beauty according to you? I believe that beauty is something that is pleasing to the eye and the soul. Like a flower, you look at it, appreciate it and enjoy it. We are a perfect and unique creation of nature, just like a flower. At the end of the day, it’s not anyone else’s responsibility to make you feel beautiful; it’s yours. I think feeling beautiful comes down to believing that you – all of you, holistically – is much greater than any imperfections that you may feel you have. I truly believe that beauty shines from within.

Celeb’s Natural Botox Secret
S
aintsco Bee Venom Mask is derived from all-natural ingredients and is free from artificial colouring and chemical preservatives that cause long-term skin damage. Bee Venom may sound intimidating, but the mask is formulated and tested to be as gentle as possible, creating naturally radiant beauty without harsh chemicals or cosmetic procedures. The Bee Venom Mask from Saintsco will literally reverse the aging process, soothing fine lines and wrinkles, softening with shea butter and lavender essential oils, and evening out skin tone,
reducing the appearance of dark spots, and soothing skin irritation due to breakouts and allergic reactions. But how does it work? Time and environmental damage can decrease the collagen and elastin in your skin, which is what causes sagging and lines. Application of the Bee Venom naturally stimulates your skin to produce these two vital proteins, and encourages beautifully firm and wrinkle-free skin. Repeated use of the venom mask increases effectiveness and further tightens and smoothes your face. While your skin continues to repair itself

The Science of Skin Aging
Dr. Ronald L Moy Founder of DNA Renewal
B
ased on 25 years of Dr Ronald L. Moy’s rigorous, clinical research, DNAEGF Renewal was formulated with the highest levels of active ingredients for optimal performance with proven clinical results. Though Dr Moy originally developed the line as a means to reserve pre-cancers in patients with severely sun damaged skin, further research also found the DNA repair enzymes used in alliance with epidermal growth factors revealed dramatic, agereversing results. Free of fragrance, parabens and sulfates, the light but potent formulas were designed for both men and women. As the master control for all skin functions, healthy DNA is vital to beautiful skin. With aging, the production of DNA
28
Repair Enzymes, as well as Epidermal Growth Factor, declines. Although many companies now claim DNA repair in their marketing campaigns, this claim is often unsubstantiated. DNAEGD Renewal, however, is based on science. DNAEGF Renewal is the combination of beauty and science together in one skincare line. Epidermal Growth Factors and DNA Repair Enzymes are two of the skin’s inherent “superstar” repair catalysts that help regulate cell proliferation and health. The natural production of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) and DNA Repair Enzymes is compromised, and helps in common aging effects such as dryness, dullness in tone, discolouration, age spots, fine lines, wrinkles and overall loss of
radiance and resiliency. Active DNA Repair Enzymes in Dr. Moy’s DNAEGF protocol support the proliferation of fresh, young skin cells and encourage the recognition and elimination of DNA damage. The Epidermal Growth Factor used in DNAEGF Renewal products is the first and only animal-free, nonbacterial Epidermal Growth Factor, offering superior integrity, quality, stability and potency. The result is an exceptional line of products that help stimulate, repair and defend cellular DNA damage. Contact House of Camille: Ph: 0800 406 416 www.houseofcamille.co.nz

The Simplicity of Nature
A
s a uniquely artisanal skincare range, Martina Organics products are 100% organic, hand-blended in small batches and use only certified ingredients. Owner and director Marta learnt early on in her life that the key to beautiful skin is a truly holistic approach, and the secret to looking good comes from feeling good. Her mother’s methods of eating a fresh plant based diet, drinking plenty of water, incorporating massage, surfing, yoga and plenty of sleep, go hand in hand with an organic beauty regime that considers the health of both mind and body. These lessons coupled with Marta’s training as a beauty therapist, have been fundamental in the development of Martina Organics. For Marta, creating superlative oils is not just a business, it’s a passion. While her range of products come from small beginnings, Marta plans to expand into moisturizers, masks, serums, supplements and more, aiming to keep things easy, accessible and never compromising on quality. Selected from New Zealand, Morocco, Japan, Africa and Israel, the botanical oils from Martina Organics harness the power of plants that have been used by civilizations for hundreds of years. All of their products are 100% organic, which is hugely rare these days. They use the finest, pure, fresh and healthy ingredients which don’t just feel delicious on the skin without all the nasty synthetics, preservatives or chemicals, they’re also proven to heal, revitalize, protect and condition your skin. For those unaware of the amazing properties of facial oils, there are a multitude of benefits. They’re rich in healthy skin essentials, they strengthen the skin’s lipid layer, preventing water loss, plumping the skin and stopping the signs of aging. You also don’t have to worry about feeling greasy, as botanical oils have a small molecular structure that’s similar to the skin, making it easily absorbable. With Martina Organics you know exactly what you’re getting: 100% organic, pure, fresh and healthy skincare products that don’t compromise on quality. As well as her pre-mixed bottled oils, Marta also works one on one with her customers to produce blends specific to their individual tastes and needs. The unisex range is all about the simplicity of nature and what your skin craves. martinaorganics.co.nz

The Spirit of October Reign
I
ncreasingly women are turning to October Reign as their retail clothing destination store. Quality product and excellent customer service as well as locality all contribute to the success of such a store and October Reign delivers and exceeds all these expectations. Creating a real retail experience and reliable brand has always been owner, Nicole Dale’s goal. Careful planning and a natural gift for articulating global fashion trends into ‘investment dressing’ has seen her brand glide effortlessly into its place as one of the top fashion stores in both of its predominant locations. Osborne Street in the centre of Auckland’s most sophisticated fashion capital, Newmarket, and Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, the city’s most funky and hip shopping strip – October Reign has these two quite differently favoured

localities covered. In-store, this diversity is also expressed with designer wear covering fashion attitudes from the edge, New York-esque to the sublimely tailored European fashionista, to the relaxed, colourful, flowing and fancy free South Pacific holidaymaker. In fact, a world trip would be easy to dress for with these unique yet still complementary looks to draw from. And that is another of October Reign’s magical attributes. For having beautiful designer clothes is one thing, wearing them with great panache is another. We all may wow in wonder at the transformations shown on stylist reality TV shows and turn to our wardrobes, note the ‘orphans’ and decide we need help. Fortunately, October Reign offers the chance to have your own ‘wow moments’ in their stores.
Trained as Retail stylists, the experienced staff have Nicole’s ability to coordinate a look that suits their customer’s needs and body shapes. Ultimate Recovery Advanced Skin Repair
M
edik8 Ultimate Recovery Advanced Skin Repair is an intensive restoration cream for very dry and compromised skin. Developed to support healing and downtime associated with aesthetic treatments, this rich cream absorbs quickly as it restores the skins barrier function and dramatically improves its appearance. A highly effective facial cream for intensive support of skin regeneration, it is an outstanding choice for post treatment such as peels, skin needling, dermabrasion and lasers, an all round excellent supplement for skin in need of special care. Many cosmetic treatments offer amazing results but they’re often associated with downtime, redness, flakiness or peeling, it can take up to three weeks for the skin to fully recover. Ultimate Recovery can dramatically speed up this recovery process of the skin; it provides visibly better performance than a standard skin recovery moisturizer. Ultimate Recovery stimulates rapid proliferation of epithelial cells and promotes collagen synthesis. Perfluoredecalin helps to increase the oxygen level in the skin to allow for a better healing process. Developed to aid in the healing process and minimize downtime associated with aesthetic treatments, Ultimate Recover absorbs quickly while providing a protective soothing layer to the skin. Benefits include quick absorption, speeding up the skin healing process, it’s fragrance free, reduces redness, irritation and discomfort of the skin and above all, acts as an intensive regenerative treatment for the skin.

W
ith 40 years of experience in designing clothes, the team behind Jean Jones clothing, knows what looks good. Fulfilling a life-long dream, the company’s lead designer Gina Condon acquired the Jean Jones brand in 2011 with husband Keri, and Jean Jones has been going from strength to strength under the couple’s vision and leadership ever since. They now have 22 Jean Jones stores throughout New Zealand with the clothes carefully manufactured in Auckland rather than offshore. Working together for 19 years, the design team led by Gina design all the Jean Jones clothes themselves, purchasing fabrics from local suppliers and manufacturers who travel overseas extensively sourcing the most current trends. The cornerstone of the Jean Jones brand is the diversity of their ranges. Their essentials range covers all seasons, and can be paired with the latest looks so that the pieces are always fresh, with an emphasis on comfort and timeless style. Complimenting this is their fashion collection of new season’s garments; with an exciting, unique and edgy piece coming out every week to keep things interesting all year round, rather than seasonally. With something for every woman, Jean Jones is a great place for mothers and daughters to have that girlie outing. . When asked about the important staples every woman should have in her wardrobe, Gina Condon comments that a basic black skirt is always chic and classic, she also suggests having layering pieces like singlet’s, slips, tights and tees in plain colours that can be mixed and matched
38
Made in New Zealand to complete any outfit and create everchanging looks. In the cold winter weather Condon suggests that taking the time to invest in quality winter wardrobe basics, such as a great coat, will mean you instantly have more garments you can mix and match with. The Jean Jones brand is synonymous with high quality women’s designer fashion; garments are designed in New Zealand to fit New Zealand women. Because Jean Jones manages their own business from design to manufacturer to retail, they’re
faster to market with new garments; they’re also far more flexible in production than overseas manufacturers. Local manufacturer means they can quickly restock to ensure the most popular sizes and garments are always available. Their quality control is carried out in New Zealand as well and ensures that high quality standards are always met. This ties in with Jean Jones’s guarantee – “If it’s not good quality, we don’t sell it.” www.jeanjones.co.nz

Dr Hauschka’s Beauty Secrets
P
eople need two types of beauty – inner and outer. Dr Hauschka products support your skin’s natural processes of cleansing, oil production and renewal to achieve lasting skin health and beauty. Its products are formulated to work with your skin, not against, to signal and guide it to a state of balance and radiance. The result of using these products is skin that is balanced and glows, with lasting health and radiance. Skin is a flexible, strong yet sensitive organ. You and your skin cannot be classified as a single ‘type’. At Dr Hauschka, they refer to skin conditions which appear and disappear rather than static skin types. You are not ‘dry skin’ or ‘combination skin’. The facial care products at Dr Hauschka are as diverse as you are. Whatever your skin condition at your current stage of life, the precious product compositions stimulate your skin’s natural regeneration. All Dr. Hauschka skin care products complement and support one another in carefully aligned skin care steps, combining cleansing, toning and moisturising products. During the day, they recommend using Cleansing Cream or Soothing Cleansing Milk before toning your skin with Facial Toner, Regenerating Serum, Sensitive Care
40
Conditioner or an Intensive Treatment. Finally, they suggest moisturising with a Day Cream that corresponds to your skin condition. Dr Hauschka skincare line is also perfectly complemented by their make up range of mascaras, eye shadows, powders, blush and lipsticks, which all contain moisturising components and medicinal plant extracts. Dr Hauschka’s cleansing products and methods remove dirt and impurities, they gently exfoliate and strengthen skin without stripping it of moisture. The beauty secret that they can reveal to you is that your skin inherently knows what to do to look after and renew itself. Their cosmetics don’t take over these tasks, but merely support your skin to be in balance with its own natural processes. Dr Hauschka products contain medicinal plant extracts and natural ingredients that are, as far as possible, obtained from certified organic or Demeter cultivation under fair trade conditions. Although there’s value in each individual ingredient, the team at Dr Hauschka believe that it is only through the interaction of all these ingredients together that such they can achieve such high-quality products. www.drhauschka.co.nz

ou want purchasers to want to “move in” not “move on”, you only get one chance to make a great first impression, make
yours count! Did you know that a staged house motivates potential purchasers to stay longer in your property? Add to that industry knowledge of knowing that a staged house will sell faster and generate a greater financial return on your investment. My name is Marie Graham from Living Edge Interiors and I bring to each client 12 years of interior design and home staging experience. My passion for interiors and bespoke furniture has taken me on a journey to constantly attempt to achieve the “perfect” look for your home, show home, or apartment. Many people have difficulty in visualizing how an empty room will look with their furniture in it. By staging the rooms, all possible objections are eliminated, because the purchaser can immediately see that, YES my sofa will fit there or YES my king bed will fit! Home staging is no longer considered an optional add onto the sales and marketing process, but a key factor in helping your sales person to market and

Virile Viral Video
Y
es you read that right! And no we’re not talking about sex drive, but rather of an online event video having the strength and energy to go viral. But what does going viral really mean? We all know about the viral videos that rack up thousands or even millions of views, but on a smaller scale and closer to home, the word viral in terms of videos simply mean that the video is shared among one’s friends, family, colleagues and associates. In other words, a video is watched and enjoyed by many people as opposed to those who are only involved in or have been at the event a video is produced for. A wedding film for example will often go viral based on this definition. For example, if there are 120 guests at a wedding and a video is watched over a 1000 times, then
50
it is by definition being watched by people who were not present at the wedding. Clearly the video has the strength and energy to reach beyond its direct associates and into a greater audience. I term this a viral video. Of course the delivery of such an audience is largely only achieved by the distribution of the video through social media. We all know the power of the “share” and when it comes to event videos, such as wedding films, fashion parades, fundraising evenings etc, the unique aspect to these films is that people love to see themselves on film and relive the fun they had. However not just any video will do this, and this is where the word “virile” comes into play. For a video to become viral it must have a strong story line, show people having a fantastic time, there will also be an
emotional appeal to the film. What it is not about is energetic music or hyper fast cuts in the footage. Story and people are the key to the video going viral in our definition. For 12 years now I have been producing event videos for companies, including this magazine, and individuals that have both strength and energy to go viral. Its often a delicate mix, but with the right touches and experience, creating a film that is both strong and energetic will mean you are maximizing your investment in putting on your event. From a wedding to an engagement party, to a fundraising dinner to a fashion parade, there is no end to the possibilities for creating a virile viral video! Jewellery with a Difference
H
anne Andersen has always been passionate about jewellery and felt that there was a lack of choice in New Zealand. In 1988 she opened her store with a stable of European and New Zealand jewellery designers and soon realised that there was a niche for her style of custom made jewellery as well. The jewellery at Hanne Andersen is different; much of it is unavailable elsewhere in New Zealand, with some of the designers exclusive to Hanne Andersen in the Southern Hemisphere. Apart from US designer Michael Michaud’s gilded and enamelled bronze work, the jewellery is all genuine, precious gold and silver. Collections by Hanne Andersen also feature in the store. Hanne and her staff pride themselves on their standard of service and the quality of the pieces they sell or custom design. The store handles all manner of repairs and alterations including pearl and bead threading, and remaking old jewellery.
Hanne Andersen
Old, broken or inherited jewellery is redesigned and given a new lease of life in the capable hands of expert gold and silversmiths, with a focus on the customer’s needs and desires. Hanne believes that we should be recycling – the metal and stones used in jewellery today took millennia to form and are being mined out. Jewellery is all about stories, and the people at Hanne Andersen Jewellery love to hear the stories about the jewellery that their customers bring in. Hanne Andersen Jewellery is all about jewellery with a difference, designed today to be enjoyed forever. Ph: +64 4 471 2814 www.hanne.co.nz

Be Fit and Gorgeous on Your Special Day!
I
t was love at first sight – and no, we’re not just talking about the groom. The colour, the style and the fit of your wedding dress is everything you could have hoped for and whether its six weeks or six months, THE day, YOUR day, cannot come around fast enough it seems. In spite of this all important countdown, you’re secretly grateful for that preparation time – knowing all eyes will be on you, you not only want to look your best, but feel your best too. Fit, Gorgeous Brides was founded in 2012 by Amelia-Jane Hoffmann, an Auckland based personal trainer who saw a need for brides-to-be to not only get toned in time for their wedding day, but also establish a healthier lifestyle and gain confidence at the same time. Having been in these shoes before, Amelia-Jane started Fit, Gorgeous Brides offering one-on-one personal training, before branching out to host six week toning challenges for brides to be – an initiative that has proven so popular in Auckland it will also be offered in Hamilton from late September.
“After receiving hundreds of emailed from brides all over the country, I began to think of ways I could share my expertise and experience with women who I weren’t necessarily training with on a daily basis, to get them on the path to the ultimate state of health, fitness and happiness. And that is where the bridal slim down e-book comes in,” explains Amelia-Jane. The E-book - available online now for $59.99 – provides brides to be with a three month plan covering nutrition, recipes, work out routines to do at home or the gym, and tips on how to create a healthy lifestyle that you can stick to even after the wedding. While some workouts focus on giving you the right curves for your jeans, or promise to deliver the ultimate beach body, Amelia-Jane (New Zealand’s only bridal fitness expert) takes into account the style of dress you have chosen in addition to your own personal health and fitness goal. She creates the perfect training plan tailored just for you. Each plan includes a nutrition guide with recipes, and monthly check up appointments to ensure you are happy with your progress and toning up in all the right places.

Escape to the Islands
A
s the weather gets colder and we start breaking out the flannelette sheets and electric blankets. We pull on our woolly jumpers in the morning and drive to work dreaming of that perfect winter escape. Wintertime is the perfect time of year to consider an escape to somewhere warmer, sunnier and just pure lush. Winter in New Zealand is the best time to head to the Islands where it’s warmer and not the rainy season, where your only job is to relax and work on your tan! Head to somewhere tropical, somewhere warm, where the waves crash on the golden sandy beaches and you can laze in warm waters surrounded by fish, coral and have a cocktail ready in hand.

1. Why did you choose a destination wedding? We always thought we would elope, however when the time came we realized it wouldn’t be the same without our closest family members, so we decided on an amazing location that neither us nor our family had travelled to before. 2. Why did you choose Rarotonga in the Cook Islands? We had some friends who got married on Rarotonga. Once we saw their pictures and heard all about their wedding experience, we didn’t even consider any other options. We had made up our minds, we were getting married in Rarotonga! 3. How did your friends and family react to the news? Everyone was so excited, not only was it going to be our wedding, but also a well deserved relaxing holiday for everyone as well. 4. How long did it take to plan? A few exchanges of emails between the wedding planners at The Rarotongan and us and it was done. Every question was answered, and every detail was completed. We felt so relaxed because we were in such good hands. 5. Describe the special touches you chose for your ceremony. We kept it very simple. We were at a beautiful location on the beach with the lagoon and sunset as our backdrop. Being there barefoot on the sand with our closest family was all we needed. 6. Describe your reception/wedding dinner. As there were only 8 of us, we chose the Tropical Garden Gazebo @ The Rarotongan and had a sit down dinner with several courses. Everyone got to choose their meals, and the food was delicious. We couldn’t even fit in the cake! We all enjoyed a few too many champagnes before we pushed the tables aside to make room for our dance floor on the sand. We had shown the wedding planners pictures of how we wanted things set up, and they had recreated the romantic, candle-lit look we wanted perfectly. 7. Any advice for couples planning a similar wedding? This is the ultimate place for a destination wedding! Whatever it is you want, just ask for it! The Rarotongan and the wedding planners will do anything for you to make your day unforgettable.
“It was everything we had ever wished for. We would do it all again, we loved it that much!”

The Idyllic Paradise
T
he island paradise of Rarotonga is legendary for its beauty - the mountainous peaks, beautiful beaches and stunning lagoons of crystal clear water are just picturesque. The most beautiful of this is in Muri, and it is here that Pacific Resort Rarotonga is located. The white sands of Muri Beach stretch for about a kilometre along the southeastern coast of the island and is fringed with swaying palm trees on one side and gently lapping waves on the other. The Pacific Resort Rarotonga is a 4-star boutique resort and is situated on 5.5 acres of manicured beachfront grounds; because of this guests are just steps away from water, sun and sand. As the lagoon is home to four offshore islets, it is protected from the waves of the Pacific Ocean by the reef, making it a safe and relaxing place to swim. A perfect destination for a family holiday or romantic island getaway, Pacific Resort absolutely has it all. With a collection of 64 studios, suites, family rooms and two/three bedroom villas, there is an accommodation option to suit all needs. Each room is tastefully decorated in a contemporary Polynesian style and overlooks either flourishing tropical gardens
68
or the gorgeous beach and lagoon. During your stay you can choose to spend lazy days basking in the sun and exploring Muri Lagoon, or you can make use of the many activities that Pacific Resort Rarotonga has to offer. Activities include paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing. You can also spend time on a glass-bottom lagoon cruiser, which offers sunrise and sunset lagoon tours as well as tours of the best snorkelling spots in the area. Adventurous guests may even be tempted to try kite surfing lessons, which are available from friendly local operators and scattered along Muri Beach. While a variety of activities are available in Muri, the rest of the island also has much to offer. For those who want to explore Rarotonga, scooters and convertible cars are available for hire on-site and are the perfect way to see the island. Mingle with the locals at weekly markets, tackle the cross-island hike, join a diving or sightseeing tour and experience the natural wonders and culture of Rarotonga. Dining at Pacific Resort Rarotonga offers an array of options to suit absolutely any taste. Casual beachfront dining is available at Sandals Restaurant & Barefoot
Bar, where you can treat yourself to a cocktail (or two!). You can enjoy the ambience either on the beachfront stone patio, or with your feet literally in the sand at the tables which are set up on the beach. Indulge in ordering room service for breakfast, lunch or dinner while relaxing privately in your room or you can enjoy a snack on your sun lounger – beach or pool side. The ideal location for those looking for a relaxing holiday getaway suitable for the whole family, the lagoon at Pacific Resort Rarotonga is perfect for children and adults alike to swim in. But it is also the perfect destination for a romantic island getaway. With the beachfront location, the resort is a place you can spend quality time with a special person in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Pacific Resort Rarotonga offers a range of romantic experiences that include intimate dinners on the beach, or around the luxuriant tropical gardens in the Are Vaka (House of Boats), which overlooks the beautiful lagoon, or Are Inangaro (House of Love), which is positioned next to a tranquil pond in the centre of the resort. Couples can completely immerse themselves in the culture and tranquillity of the island as they
spend time basking in the sun, swimming in the lagoon, enjoying sunset cruises or indulging in couples massages and spa treatments. Pacific Resort Rarotonga also offers the option of having weddings, receptions and renewal of vows at their resort. They endeavour to make sure your special day is infused with the unique romance of South Seas Polynesia. Newly-weds are sure to appreciate the service provided by the resort’s gracious staff and their romantic setting ensures an unforgettable honeymoon experience. To acknowledge newly-wed’s special milestone, the resort greets honeymooners with complimentary wine, flowers and a small gift on arrival. However you choose to spend your time at Pacific Resort Rarotonga, you know it will be a truly unforgettable experience. A perfect blend of contemporary facilities and traditional Cook Islands hospitality makes for an experience which, when mixed with the exquisite natural beauty of Muri Beach, creates a recipe for relaxation that cannot be beaten. By the end of your stay you’ll be renewed, refreshed and above all determined to return. www.pacificresort.com

ean back, take a deep breath and listen to the lull of the waves and the palm trees rustling in the tropical breeze – you have arrived at the luxurious Sandy Beach Resort in the legendary kingdom of Tonga. Owned and operated by a German family, Sandy Beach Resort is a boutique resort that offers 12 exclusive bungalows situated directly on the best beach in Tonga. Unlike most Pacific beaches, the swimming and snorkelling at Sandy Beach is excellent at all tides! Located in the Ha’apai island group, Sandy Beach Resort have been working closely with the local community for nearly three decades to provide you with the most comfortable and authentic Pacific Island experience. Every year from July to November, the Ha’apai islands of northern Tonga are visited by the majestic southern humpback whales. They come to the islands from their feeding habitat in the Antarctic for mating and calving in the shallow, warm Tongan waters and can be seen from Sandy Beach Resort! As one of only two places in the world, Tonga offers you the incredible and unique opportunity of actually swimming with these impressive creatures, who are known for their beautiful acrobatic manoeuvres and high intelligence. In the clear turquoise tropical waters of Sandy Beach Resort, you’ll be able to swim right up to the 20 meter long female whales and their curious newborn calves. Occasionally you will hear the distinct “courting song” of the males, producing sounds that can carry 100 km through the ocean. Sandy Beach Tonga follows Tonga’s strict and non-invasive guidelines for whale watching while creating awareness for the endangered humpback whale. This is a deeply moving experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. Ph: +67 6 69600 www.sandy-beach-tonga.com

Joe Annandale, the chief of nearby Poutasi Village and owner of Sinalei, says 95% of the resort’s menu is sourced locally. “We buy from the local fishermen, we buy from the local farmers, and we have the Poutasi Farm that supplies restaurants in Apia and resorts with their salad greens. It’s been a wonderful development.” www.sinalei.com

35+? Noticing Your Body Change? By Melissa-Anne Smit from 101 Fitness
W
e could go on and on about the benefits of strength training, but in simple terms…it helps turn back time – to a younger you.
Controlled, correct and purposeful resistance training slows the muscle loss that occurs with aging, prevents osteoporosis, improves our sleep, eases day-to-day activities and decreases our risk of injury. Not to mention improving our balance, mental health and long term weight loss success. As we age, our muscle fibers tend to shrink in number and in size, and become less responsive to messages from the central nervous system. This results in decreased strength, balance and coordination. The extent to which these occur depends on a number of factors, including genetics, diet, smoking and alcohol use and, most importantly, physical activity levels. Research shows that inactivity is responsible for the majority of age associated muscle loss. Fortunately, correct and specific strength training (rather than just cardio exercise) in just 25 minutes a week can reverse much of this decline
by stimulating the regeneration of muscle fibers. As strength training adds muscle to the skeleton, the bones strengthen and grow stronger to bear this heavier muscle load. This ultimately combats osteoporosis. Proper strength training done so that it doesn’t apply stress directly to the joints is ideal for people with ar thritis. This type of strength training can help alleviate symptoms by strengthening the muscles, tendons and ligaments that surround joints. So, going back to the start, in simple terms strength training helps turn back time – to a younger you. At 101 Fitness we’d love nothing more than to partner with you to safely and effectively help you regain muscle and tone. The privacy and 1-on-1 training means you get the attention and support you deserve. Oestrogen Dominance
O
estrogens are a type of steroid sex hormone produced predominantly in the ovaries, although the adrenal glands and fat cells can manufacture small amounts. The balancing hormone for oestrogen is progesterone, produced by the ovarian follicle after ovulation. In women over the age of 30, ovulation may not occur every month, so little progesterone is produced leading to a relative excess of oestrogen and oestrogen dominance. The signs and symptoms of oestrogen dominance are particularly varied and range from PMS symptoms to depression, fatigue, recurrent thrush, thyroid dysfunction, poor libido, and heavy periods to endometriosis, fibroids and infertility. What are the causes? Aside from age related ovulation issues, some of the key reasons for oestrogen dominance are environmental endocrine disruptors, poor excretion, a poor diet and being overweight. Environmental or xenoestrogens, may be present in plastics, pesticides, animal products, skin care and beauty products and can disrupt the fine balance of hormones. Excess alcohol, medications and other insults to the liver can reduce the livers capacity to clear excess oestrogens. The liver requires a raft of nutrients in order to detoxify oestrogens; these include selenium, sulphur and amino acids from
78
protein, so a poor diet can contribute to oestrogen excess too. In addition, low levels of dietary fibre and too much animal proteins can contribute negatively to oestrogen excess, by decreasing clearance of oestrogens from the bowel and therefore allowing oestrogens to recirculate. In overweight and obese people, more oestrogen is produced by fat cells contributing to imbalance. What can be done? Minimise dietary contaminants... Eat a diet free of hormones, pesticides and antibiotics, which means choosing organic or spray-free produce whenever possible. Minimise xenoestrogen exposure... Avoid using plastic bottles and food wrappings, ditch the chemical laden cosmetic and body care products. Support liver function... Eat more foods high in sulphur and sulphur containing amino acids including eggs, fish, legumes and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and kale. For extra liver support try Radiance® Hormone Balance containing Diindolymethane (DIM) which promotes the activity of enzymes to improve oestrogen metabolism in the liver. Scientific research shows DIM increases the level of “good” protective oestrogens, while reducing the level of the “bad” oestrogens, which are responsible for the symptoms of oestrogen dominance.
Support bowel clearance... Poor gut flora can enhance the production of an enzyme which promotes the recirculation of oestrogens back into the body. The probiotic strains in Radiance® Pro-B Digest can help support the colonisation of beneficial flora thus supporting healthy oestrogen excretion through the bowel. Team this with a good intake of prebiotics from a diet high in fibre- good sources include legumes, whole grains and vegetables. This duo can also help to control candida populations. Exercise... Getting active regularly helps to promote detoxification, optimal circulation and also helps to reduce excess fat which may be contributing to oestrogen load. So don’t let oestrogen dominate you! Take back the power with these easy steps! Ph: +64 9 415 8624 www.healthandherbs.co.nz

Suzuki’s Kizashi By James Bennett
E
arlier this year I became the proud owner of a Suzuki Kizashi Sport, also known as one of the world’s sexiest and exciting sports sedans. With all the bells and whistles of a European car, I quickly found that this was a car that people took note of at the lights. Kizashi is actually a Japanese word, meaning “something great is coming”, and that’s exactly how I felt when I had my first drive of the Kizashi. The standard leather seats are stylish, comfortable and supportive, and the fact that you can hop in at 5 am and put the seat warmer on is an absolute dream on those dreary cold mornings. With a fair amount of cabin space, the large boot is big enough to fit in most everyday items; it becomes even bigger when the rear seats are pushed down. From the outset Kizashi is an absolute looker, and like I mentioned, it gets more than a fair few double takes when I drive by. It’s sleek, sharp and has huge sports alloy wheels, which I was hugely drawn to. Safety is also an obvious element to the car, with its numerous air bags, stability control system and front and rear parking sensors. The Kizashi is a car that’s so easy to handle, it drives incredibly well and deals with lumps and bumps on the road with ease. Of course this makes long journeys, road trips and being stuck in traffic all a breeze. Sporty, sexy and fast, the Suzuki Kizashi is a car that people stop and take a double look at.

hen Maxine Sutherland and her husband Terry saw that First Class Classics was for sale, they just knew it was a sign. Having just retired from a working career that has taken them and their family to five different countries, where they worked and lived, over 24 years, Maxine and Terry realised that the retired life just wasn’t for them. They felt that they were too young to just suddenly stop and do nothing; they wanted to keep the mind and body active. So, just five weeks from their initial enquiry, they owned First Class Classics. With an extensive background in business, international experience with different cultures, and arts and crafts design, Maxine has a passion to deliver an unforgettable experience. While she was living abroad she immersed herself in wedding planning and making accessories for the industry, because of this, First Class Classics was a natural fit. In just eighteen short months, Maxine and Terry have taken the business to a higher level with their brand new showroom in East Tamaki. They’ve implemented new business and customer relation strategies as well as upgrading their website. Let’s Be Blunt
I
n 1999 Design engineer Greig Brebner stepped out of a doorway in London and was met by rain. As the downpour gathered pace his eyes were suddenly at the mercy of hundreds of bristling spikes; the ends of umbrellas being unfurled around him. Moments later, the wind turned one of them inside out; its owner struggled to avoid taking Greig’s eye out. Greig decided to redesign the entire idea of a personal weather protection canopy. The engineer in him worked towards something that would outperform everything on the market, working flawlessly and effortlessly in conditions way beyond the capabilities of any umbrella in the world. And so Greig, along with Managing Director Scott Kington and Global Brand Manager Josh Page, created the ‘Blunt
Umbrella’ brand. With world domination in sight, the three hip Aucklanders want to see an end to the tens of millions of umbrellas that collapse with the slightest of gusts, to end up clogging landfills every year. A Blunt is specifically designed and built to withstand the toughest conditions and be a pleasure to use year after year. This means less waste, better value for money and less swearing in the street every time it rains! The Blunt aim is not just to redefine the umbrella itself, but the whole umbrella industry! Since its startup in Auckland in 2009, Blunt Umbrellas have captivated discerning consumers with their stylish roundededge shape and gale-force-wind-defying stability. “Good design solves problems and we wanted a fantastic user experience,” says Managing Director Scott Kington, “with a revolutionary design and high
quality materials like ours, they could, and should, last a lifetime. “SPOSABLE TO INDISPENSABLE.” While umbrellas aren’t typically associated with being chic, revolutionary or innovative, Blunt’s ground-breaking silhouette and function have seen them become the unlikely hero of Kiwi design. Their umbrella brand is the only one to insist that every product that comes off the production line is individually put through a quality control test. The three also maintain that Blunt is not only environmentally friendly, but it’s ethically-manufactured too. With nine models to choose from ranging from the fold-up XS_Metro to the Large Golf_G2 and eleven colours to suit each individual, Blunt has you covered whatever the weather. www.bluntumbrellas.com

ith an appropriate motto of ‘so close, and yet so far away’, Waiheke encompasses the best New Zealand has to offer in one exceptional place. EYE magazine talks with Ed Coutts, founder of Waiheke Unlimited, an exclusive personalised property management and holiday home rental company. How did Waiheke Unlimited come about? I revisited the island in the mid-nineties after living overseas for 20 odd years. There was such tranquillity, beauty, community and purity here – I saw the opportunity for Waiheke to become a major tourist destination. So I set about building a portfolio of luxury and executive self-catered properties for world class accommodation, corporate and private events. How do you find properties? We are blessed to have property owners prepared to share their piece of paradise with others, but this only came about through the care, trust and attention we offer those owners. We have always been careful in the types of clients we allow to use these high end properties, which reinforces the owners confidence and sense of security. How do you choose properties? I look for special properties in unique places that offer what I would want out of high end accommodation or a venue if I was the client. Luxury, isolation, exceptional views, modern facilities and so on. Then I set about marrying clients to a property and adding on anything they may desire. We offer full provisioning if requested, along with in-house catering, massage, maid service, baby sitting and organising of activities – or the guests can do their own thing confident that experienced staff members are only a phone call away.
Why Waiheke? There is something special about the island. The original Maori name for Waiheke apparently meant sheltering island or womb, and I believe that sense of rebirth and retreat is immediately evident when you arrive. Conde Nast Traveller, Lonely Planet and The New York Times all rank the island amongst the best stand-out destination islands in the South Pacific, and no other city in the world can boast such an international experience in their own backyard. As a destination Waiheke is truly unsurpassed in so many ways, where natural beauty exists in such close proximity to urbanity. How has the business changed? Over the years Waiheke Unlimited has run an exclusive portfolio of over 100 personally selected premium properties on the Island, ranging from luxury beachside villas to quintessential cottages. The level of properties available in the beginning is vastly different to today, where we now have some of the most expensive real estate in the country. It has been a wonderful transition from the old broken down baches to today’s premium properties. Who uses your services? Waiheke Unlimited has looked after many high end clients from heads of state to leading business moguls and through to entertainers. Lady Gaga started out as a very high maintenance client but quickly fell into the Island pace and relaxed so much so

that she did not want to leave. She even insisted I move in to be her Man Friday, down to being the on-site chef cooking export quality legs of lamb and high country beef. The Top Gear Team have enjoyed several stays on the island and they are demanding in the best way, but great fun. Jeremy asked us to supply a brand new black on black Range Rover Sport for him to enjoy having at the front door. What’s to do on the island? There are many things to do on the island, from chilling out and watching dolphins playing in the bay to enjoying the internationally ranked restaurants and award-winning wineries. Indulge in a lazy lunch at the colourful cafés in Oneroa, or enjoy a laid back day at the likes of Stonyridge or the award winning The Shed next door. Cable Bay and Mudbrick restaurants are amongst the options for five star dining; you can cook food from local vendors or get fish and chips for the beach. There is plenty of adventure from laser bird shooting and zip lining through the forest canopy to the once in a lifetime experience of heli-fishing on an isolated rock reef off Great Barrier Island or the Coromandel. And Waiheke is not just for holidays… Waiheke Unlimited have also built a sustainable relationship in the corporate market, where companies come and hold their off-site meetings, run conferences or showcase Waiheke as the gem of New Zealand. Waiheke’s creative and peaceful spaces assist greatly in getting the job done better. We have many options available and it’s so easy, just get on the boat, we look after the rest. Visit www.waihekeunlimited.co.nz to book your stay at Auckland’s most exciting destination.

Mr. Opinionator
H
er father was in jail for a long time from 1932. He wasn’t around for her childhood. He wasn’t around for my childhood. He had a very short stay with us when I was about 7 or 8; I expect he would have preferred being back in prison. You can’t blame the guy. It was late. He was drunk and the shop-owner wouldn’t open to sell him some cigarettes. What’s a man to do? What Lou did was to go and get his shotgun and proceed to shoot the crap out of the recalcitrant retailer. Smoking does kill. Lou’s alcoholism was almost certainly Huntington’s – related. His incarceration throughout his remaining mating years, therefore, was a good thing although it was too late for her and too late for me. She’s got Huntington’s. Her diagnosis required me to have DNA analysis and counselling ahead of the result. I did a bit of research: alcoholism, trouble driving, mood swings, trouble making a decision and short-term memory loss preceded an early demise. QED, said my so-called friends; I didn’t need any DNA tests – did we have time for a party but could I remember where it was and how would I get there? While my BFF would have loved to have had an alcoholic friend, it was the memory loss which really spurred him on to great things. Before the result came out, while the possibilities of becoming an ex-parrot in the not too distant future were 50/50 (you only need one copy of the defective gene from the parent carrier), he organised all my friends (four if you include his dog, Tess) to send me photos with their names scrawled over them so I wouldn’t forget them. He’s a total bastard. I had 14 repeats when the Huntington’s prize starts at 36. That was good. But dear reader, that business about the shopkeeper was “family misinformation” I’ve bumped into that a few times: the guy you find in bed with the woman who bore you “has just jumped in because he was cold”. The real version, as reported by the ODT, is much more sinister. Lou and a then single woman had had a
94
child called John. The woman was now married to a Mr Findlay Buchanan, who was step-fathering (if there is such a word) the child. On the night in question, it appears Lou was drunk and wanted to visit the child. By most accounts, he regained consciousness and found himself with his head leaning against the Buchanan door and his mumbling to himself how shikkered he was. His nicotine craving overwhelmed him and caused him to assail the door with his head a couple of times. He followed the two dull, almost apologetic, thuds with two demanding kicks, which caused the thin glass windows to rattle out to the quiet street. Clearly, introductions were not needed; a man’s voice barked: “Go home, O’Connor. You’re not seeing anyone at this time of night and in that condition. Bugger off or I’ll come out and see you off. You’ve got a wife and baby at home; now get going.” (He was Catholic and, it appears, a prolific breeder). Lou reacted to the admonishment with some degree of insight and reflected, in conspiratorial tones, just how “tight” he was. “Go home Lou; don’t be coming here drunk and late at night”, resounded from within. “Findlay, all I want is cigarette- that’s all and I’ll be on my way- God, I’m dying for one, man. Findlay, a cigarette!” He leaned his head against the door and used it to bang the door urgently a couple of times more. The lack of further response from within irritated and he followed with a kick or two. The desired effect was obtained as the voice inside cajoled: “Quieten down, man. I’ll give you a cigarette but you have to go home straight away.” “Word of honour, Findlay, word of honour”. After following Findlay Buchanan into the house and sitting himself heavily upon a bed, Lou’s exemplary behaviour was rewarded with a cigarette, the lighting of which was accomplished by Buchanan with some difficulty owing to complications arising from the cigarette’s inability to remain near the point of the flame. Cigarette completed and brain released from the craving, Lou asked about turning his attendance into some sort of social occasion
but was denied by his host on the grounds that it was late at night and the visitor was not in much of a state to visit. Like all good deceptions, there was an element of truth in my grandmother’s version and it was that Lou left the Buchanan house and pounded on the door of the shop along the road demanding cigarettes. However, it was not the shopkeeper who got his beans from Lou that night. After being told by the shopkeeper, from behind a locked door, what that shopkeeper would do to Lou if he didn’t bugger off, Lou “visited” a drinking mate and, in about an hour and a half, they drank 2 jars, less the quarter jar which his mate had poured down the sink in order to get Lou to leave. Between that visit and the next event, a shotgun was garnered. For the sake of accuracy, I record the Otago Daily Times’ report on this aspect of Mrs Buchanan’s evidence: “After they had gone back to bed, witness and her husband were awakened by a loud knocking at the door. The knocking awakened the boy, who called out: ‘There is someone at the front door’, and witness heard O’Connor say: ‘Is Fin there, John?’Buchanan switched on the bedroom light and went to the front door and witness did not hear anything else until she heard a noise. She jumped out of bed and on running to the door leading to the front room she saw her husband lying on the floor with O’Connor standing inside the door holding a gun.” Talk about a doomed family; the boy, John, died in a car crash when he was about 21.

in Dunedin. Afterwards, she spent eight years in London where she had three sons. When she moved back to New Zealand she started her artificial flower business in Parnell in 1998 for three years before working from home. Diane thinks of her flower business as an exciting continuation of a “perfect existence”. Diane’s aim is to provide the most comprehensive range of artificial flowers in New Zealand, with stock that is only of the highest quality and to fulfill any request no matter how large or small. Flexibility of each stem, flower and leaf also allows a huge range of attractive, unique

Lashings of Luxury
A
t GEORGE & EDI (G&E) we believe luxury is created through craftsmanship and through the thoughtfulness you put into your products and so we do everything by hand and with a lot of love. After many years of working overseas for other big companies, the founder of G&E, Sarah Agnew started to dream of having her own business, where quality was more important than just the bottom line and to be able to choose where you live based on lifestyle and not just job opportunities, so she took a years career break, moved to Wanaka with a couple of ideas and a lot of enthusiasm, and she’s never looked back! Sarah’s desire is to build G&E into a sustainable brand that is fun, has integrity and produces beautiful, quality products that bring joy and a little luxury to the every day. The business is named after her parents, who have been great ambassadors of her vision.
16
G&E are known for their beautiful scented candles, which are made using natural soya wax and cotton lead free wicks. No mass production at G&E, all the candles are hand poured in small batches and to order so that they are always fresh, and before the wax sets every wick is straightened by hand to make sure they are centred for the best burning. The candles are then labelled and wrapped, a very slow process but well worth it. Their signature style is up-cycling and repurposing pages from outdated and unwanted encyclopedias, dictionaries, and a personal favourite, books on flowers, which creates unique variations with each batch. The team at G&E love the process of creating fragrances for their range and believe that fragrance knows no gender, rather, its about blending oils to come up with something elegant, lush, adventurous and a little intriguing. After all a fragrance can take you on a journey, smell is a feeling and can trigger a memory of a time and
place. They want their customers to be able to swathe their homes in a fragrance that suits both their mood and personal style. Their classic range of candles, with an understated luxury, are designed to be enjoyed every day and not just for special occasions. Beautiful in their simplicity with eight different fragrances to choose from that includes a bold Spicy Vanilla, a clean and fresh Grapefruit & Mint, the classic and timeless French Pear, a buttery soft Geranium, and the dark and moody Havana, plus the private blends designed for four of their stockists and available exclusively at their stores. With new additions to their home fragrance range due out this year there’s never a dull moment at G&E HQ, and it smells pretty divine too! www.georgeandedi.com

A Doll’s House
Child’s play has turned into a cherished career for interior designer Andrew Melville who says taking a risk can be the best decorating decision you’ve ever made.
A
ndrew Melville’s earliest memory is as a young boy playing with his sister’s dolls house and meticulously rearranging its furniture. “I’d use wrapping paper for wallpaper and bits of fabrics for curtains. Then I started to rearrange my parent’s houses as a teenager.” Now, after 25 years as an acclaimed interior designer, the excitement that was once sparked by scraps of fabric found around his parents’ homes remains. He now applies that same sense of youthful fantasy and drama to designing some of New Zealand’s most beautiful interior spaces. For Andrew, fabrics are often centre stage, integral to bringing the scene to life, “I just love the expression of creativity that interior design gives me. I love the movement, fantasy and drama that fabric creates – a room can suddenly have so much more depth.” Andrew works closely with New Zealand’s leading fabric house, Atelier Textiles, which houses over 30,000 of the worlds most luxurious and beautiful textiles. Owner and director of Atelier, Rebecca Bowering, works with designers like Andrew to provide options to suit all desires.
20
Andrew Melville
“We want to ensure we can bring Andrew and his client’s decoration fantasies to life so that their interior spaces become everything they’ve ever dreamed of.” Andrew is a particular fan of international brands Jim Thompson, Larsen, Colefax and Fowler and Manuel Canovas, all found exclusively at Atelier Textiles. “I pay special attention to textures and colours. For example, Jim Thompson’s raw skills hold a lovely honesty about them because they’re so natural. Colefax and Fowler offers a traditional look that’s ideal in homes where contemporary art is present. But it’s Manuel Canovas that really allows me to play with flamboyancy because of the wonderful themes involved in its collections.” There are two key factors that Andrew always considers while looking for fabrics – the style of the space, and its exposure to light. “Most places fit into the classic, contemporary classic, or contemporary style categories. But even in the most contemporary of spaces, there’s always room for fabric, even just subtly used, to bring it to life. “Then there’s light – how much sun will be filling the room, how that may damage certain fabrics, but also how it changes the look and colour of fabrics too. A fabric can look completely different in the brighter light of the southern hemisphere (and particularly
in NZ) to what it looks like in the duller northern hemisphere atmosphere.” A designer’s work can only be as good as the relationship they build with their client, explains Andrew. The interior magic happens when there’s total trust involved. “The client really makes the decorator. You can have all the money in the world to budget with; it’s the synergy between the two that’s essential to stunning results.” But clients can often be afraid to embrace the drama of textiles, opting to play it safer with muted tones and the more conservative options available. “We don’t always need to play it safe,” says Andrew. “Taking a calculated risk can mean the difference between lovely and spectacular. It’s my job, with the help of Atelier, to guide clients through this process, creating results often better than ever first imagined.” There’s nothing quite like fabric to transpor t you to another place or time, explains Andrew, “Atelier brings the best and most luxurious fabrics from all over the world right here. For such a small country, that’s amazing opportunity for people to express themselves through their interior spaces.” Atelier n. a workshop or studio, esp. of an artist or designer. Expedition with Designer Rugs Laura Furey, NZ Manager takes us on this artisan voyage to meet the weavers of Nepal.
M
any of you might be familiar with the contemporary style and superb quality of Designer Rug’s finished product, the story behind how a hand knotted rug is developed and produced is a fascinating one. On the outskirts of Kathmandu, nearby weavers workshops are meticulously developing the newly created Hand knot ranges for Designer Rugs. It will take them up to 4-5 months to produce a hand knot rug, a scrupulous and time consuming process, each weaver will weave two and half square metres per month. “It’s an incredible skill”, notes Laura, “To provoke something so tangible and stunning, takes absurd agility and perception. Some of our more complex designs can take up to one year to produce versus a Hand tufted rug which will take only 6 weeks to develop.” Particularly, creating some of their new designs involves employing hemp and a technique called ‘arbrash’. Whilst most designs incur pressure dying which is even, arbrash engages an uneven dying technique applied to the yarn, achieving a greater variety in colour density and pattern. “This gives a lovely transition of colour and texture and creates a much more organic and textural effect to the designs.” It’s remarkable to see how these Nepalese weavers translate designs from digital to a physical realisation. “Our design process maybe more modern but the actual manufacturing is still very similar to how it has been done historically. We may have all the technology available to us, but technique is still the same, no modern substitutes have ever achieved the same quality or beauty.” Travelling to Nepal will give you a sense of vivacity, with their home facades individually painted in multiple colours and the constant uninterrupted landscape of brightly coloured pray flags. “They are incredibly positive, friendly people.”
Centring on Designer Rugs core values of quality, design integrity and originality; meet ‘Steppe Fall’ (below right image), an organic and moody texture, created from the finest Wool & pure Silks and one of the latest from their Wool + Silk collection. A stunning aesthetic further enhanced by the use of these traditional Tibetan hand knotting techniques.
I would not hesitate to get up close and personal with these designs. There is no doubt about it its Art for your floor, but with a side of functional! www.designerrugs.co.nz

“Verda has invested heavily in product and new market development in recent years despite the significant impact on the wood processing and construction sectors resulting from the Global Financial Crisis.” “The investment in the new products and markets is now flowing through by way of exponential sales growth, brand equity and recognition and support from high end architects and designers in several global markets.” The new investors represent a diverse mix of interests across the forestry, architecture, finance, building products distribution, agriculture and manufacturing sectors. New Zealand trade and enterprise customer manager Stephen Blair says Verda’s success in attracting new investors is due to the hard work the company has put into building an international brand, understanding their market and staying focused. “What’s special about Verda is that they really understand the difference between selling a piece of wood and building a brand,” says Blair. “They’ve done a remarkable job – particularly in France, where soft wood is regarded as a low quality wood. They have established their soft wood products as a high quality, beautiful outdoor experience, not just a deck.” Blair says Verda has been very persistent in tough economic times and has been focused by not tackling too many markets at once. “If we want to get away from just exporting logs, we need more companies like Verda to create high value products. NZTE is looking forward to continuing its partnership with VIL to help and support them. Ph: + 64 7 349 0273 www.verda.com

THE HOUSE THAT EYE BUILT
Hinuera the Feature Stone
L
ocated on the shores of Whangarei Harbour, One Tree Point in Ruakaka is a beautiful brand new home. The owners of said home have been planning the 620m2 house for 18 months and the build took another 18 months. With strong European influences from its well travelled owners, the house has three buildings on a T shaped footprint. The first is the main house with ¾ bedrooms, an office, an open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge. Next is the two car garage with a 4m high boat shed with a rumpus room, guest bedroom and bathroom above. The indoor 100m2 pool building with 16m X 3m heated lap pool rounds off this exquisite house nicely. When the owners came to deciding what stone company to use there was a clear winner. Hinuera Stone, a unique and natural New Zealand cladding, landscaping and feature stone, provides distinctive good looks, timeless elegance and durability. Hinuera Stone was chosen for several reasons. Owners chose the Kiln Fired Sawnstone blocks due to the scale of
the building, where proportion was needed. “When viewed from the Harbour, the golden colours and the veins in the stone sit well with the environment of the Sandstone Cliffs around One Tree Point; it has its own warmth, aesthetic and character.” There’s a total of 70 tonne of Hinuera Stone in the house with each block weighing 27kg. The owners loved the fact that Hinuera Stone was a natural product. Their stone is the only resource of its type in the southern hemisphere and is reputed as both durable and low maintenance, which of course adds value to homes and landscapes. Because of the owner’s close proximity to the fishing grounds in Ruakaka, they also had a Hinuera Stone and stainless steel bench top fish cleaning station put in. A particular focal and talking piece is the Hinuera Stone custom-made fire place mantle and hearth. The owners are immensely happy with the end result and pleased with the inclusion of Hinuera Stone, making their beautiful home unique. Ph: 0800 HINUERA (446 8372) www.hinuera.co.nz Subtrades:

Much More Than a Garden Centre
Delma Harrison
W
elcome to Palmers Remuera Garden World. A successful family-owned garden centre and café. The unstoppable mother and son duo of Delma and Jonathan Harrison work together seamlessly within the three components that make up Palmers Remuera – the garden centre, Café Greenfingers and landscaping. This October, Delma and Jonathan will celebrate their 8 year anniversary of owning the Remuera franchise of Palmers. With an extensive background in business, Delma has owned and managed numerous bars and restaurants since 1978. While the pair are immensely hands-on, they love that everyday is different. While Delma’s main focus is Palmers and Cafe Greenfingers, Jonathan works closely with customers, advising them on landscaping options. Café Greenfingers is a huge draw card for customers and locals alike, with head chef professionals from top restaurants, the café serves a range of à la carte meals, cabinet delicacies, fantastic coffee and take-home food. Quite often the café holds exclusive functions, for high tea’s, corporate events or small birthdays. It was even awarded the ‘top garden centre’ in the New Zealand Herald – no easy feat! The interior design of Palmers Remuera is eclectic, it’s exciting in design and customers love that it’s somewhere different. Delma and Jonathan agree that there’s no reason
to be safe with their business, they stock products that are exclusive and different. Travelling overseas at least once a year, the pair bring back a huge range of different and new stock, that’s never been seen. They have a great range of imported pots, outdoor furniture and statues, even making their own water features onsite. With the support of their 50+ staff, each member of the team is knowledgeable and has degrees or diplomas in Horticulture, a huge point of difference from their competitors. At Palmers Remuera, they pride themselves on being qualified and familiar in all of their products. They give advice that’s correct and never guess, “You’re only as good as you’re last piece of advice,” Delma adds. For example, staff member Jonathan Cox is renowned for his knowledge in roses; even writing for the New Zealand rose society and was acclaimed in the New

Zealand Herald recently. As an expert rose buyer and specialist, Jonathan has 20+ years experience. Palmers Remuera celebrates their point of differences from their competitors. They have on-site designers who are more than happy to help advice you in your requests, they can even come to your home and help you out with landscaping options. With their landscaping specialists, they can advise you about glass pool fencing, rock walls, gazebos, timber fencing and decks, synthetic turf, the list goes on! They also allow for personal orders, going the extra mile for all their customers. Within the store they stock a plethora of giftware items; aromatherapy, crystal chandeliers, candelabras, umbrellas, kaftans, scarves, Jewellery, napkins and so forth. They actually have the biggest napkin range in Auckland, something for every occasion. Completely hands on, Palmers
Remuera are also huge supporters of the local community. They do this through their partnership with local schools and charities such as the Ronald McDonald house. They love fundraising for them through gift hampers, raffling off vouchers and school tours. Yet another point of difference is the beautiful orchids available at Palmers Remuera. They have professional growers who supply the orchids and are known to have the most comprehensive selection in Auckland. They take pride in the quality of their plants, by spending a lot of money on maintaining them, this through the plant sprays and feeding. As a one stop shop, Palmers Remuera is definitely worth a trip. You won’t be disappointed with the garden centre, Café Greenfingers and the outstanding service the team provide. From Quarry to Homes, Stonefields is the Place To Be Tim Carter
O
ne day there was a stone quarry and the next there were houses and lakes! Perhaps not quite overnight but there is certainly a bourgeoning community enjoying a new housing at Stonefields. Barfoot & Thompson opened its market place office in November 2013 under the management of Tim Carter. Continuing to grow, the current team of 14 residential sales agents has recently been joined by a property manager, which is great news for local investors. With building in the development now well over the halfway mark, Tim says there is a great selection of homes available including villas, townhouses and apartments. For first homebuyers, families, those seeking a low maintenance ‘lock n leave’ lifestyle to investors – there is something suitable for everyone and at various price points. A resident himself, Tim sums up Stonefields nicely, “there are older and younger people here so the way it’s developed, people are quite close. It’s like the old days when everyone asks how you’re going. Recently a young mother explained how much she and her husband enjoy the safe and secure environment with walkways, parks and playgrounds all contributing to a great community feel. “Our office is actively involved in the community and we have sponsored the local school fair, movie nights and other events. We love to talk to people and are here to help.” To discuss becoming part of the Stonefields community, please see the details below.

Auckland’s Number One GastroPub
E
ye Magazine caught up with Ken Morrison, the new owner of The Attic Bar and Restaurant in Mission Bay, Auckland.
What makes The Attic different from any other Pub or Restaurant? Firstly, the location is superb and being out on the deck at The Attic on a sunny day is pure bliss. Secondly, the service is fantastic. Unlike most pubs, we offer full table service so most times it won’t be necessary for you to go to the bar to get drinks – our happy staff will come and organize everything for you. Lastly, The Attic is not jam-packed or noisy; there is plenty of room between tables and the ambience (whether from the open decks on a sunny day or the fire on a cold night) is always welcoming. Tell us about the location in Mission Bay? Mission Bay is a magnificent beach and reserve just 5 minutes around the waterfront from the CBD. Known for its historic fountain and lights at night, Mission Bay hosts a large number of restaurants and hospitality venues. There is always something happening at Mission Bay and The Attic decks or windows are the ideal place to watch from.
50
What are the highlights of The Attic’s Menu? The Attic’s menu is updated every 6 months to keep it fresh and relevant. In saying that there are some dishes like the Seafood Risotto or Pork Ribs with Jack Daniels sauce that we would never change as they are so popular and there are certain customers who come in for this dish every week. Other favourites are our mouth-watering Sirloin Steak and succulent Pork Belly. How do these dishes differ from any other restaurant meal? At The Attic food is very important to us. We are a gastropub – our focus is on the food as much as the beverages and we insist that our food is substantially better than typical “pub food”. Unlike many restaurants, our main meals are a full, complete and healthy meal with vegetables; they must be something that you could never create at home unless you’re a master chef yourself. How do you go about creating your menu and beverage list? The head chef, operations manager, bar manager and I all meet to put forward ideas as to changes to the current menu. Once we have a basic agreement, the
kitchen will prepare test dishes which will be critiqued and altered sometimes as many as 6 or 7 times before we get it right and are prepared to serve them to customers. With our wines, each wine is personally chosen by me so that we have a comprehensive selection covering all types and price points. Ph: +64 9 521 0000 www.theatticbar.co.nz

Yummy Yum Cha
E
stablished in 2000, Grand Harbour strives to serve the most authentic Hong Kong style dishes in Auckland. With an extensive beverage selection, comfortable surroundings and friendly staff, dining at Grand Harbour Chinese Restaurant is always an unforgettable experience. In a city that has no shortage of Asian dining experiences, Yum Cha at Grand Harbour is hugely popular, with 80 different varieties of steamed, deep fried, sweet, savoury and spicy Dim Sum to choose from. By just word of mouth, the reputation of the restaurant has spread quickly among local and national diners, seeking an authentic Hong Kong style dining experience. Grand Harbour is a spacious venue, able to seat around 300 people. Situated just an easy two minute walk from the Viaduct Harbour and close to all major hotels, Grand Harbour offers an exciting and suitable option for all occasions from weddings to birthdays to corporate events. The staff at Grand Harbour are quick, friendly and attentive. Service is a top priority here and is just one of the things the restaurant prides itself upon. Being voted Metro Magazine’s 2004, 2005 and 2006 Chinese Restaurant of the Year, 2008-2011 Metro top 50 Restaurants award, 2010 runner-up best Asian Restaurant and highly commended dish of the year (crayfish with ginger and spring onion) were all huge accolades. Hong Kong trained chefs bring a wealth of knowledge to the kitchen. While old favourites are popular, these chefs are always trying to improve their techniques, most notably with the chef ’s specials. Changing every 3 months, these signature dishes offer a new innovative take on traditional Chinese food. With live seafood, including blue cod, crayfish, Paua and baby abalone, Grand Harbour offers a seasonal selection of delicious dishes that other places simply do not have. Whether for lunch or dinner, Grand Harbour Chinese Restaurant has become Auckland’s premiere source for fine Chinese dining, with a host of delicious, traditional recipes.

Where Land Meets Sea
N
estled in a spot where land meets sea, The Portlander is a unique take on the grill house concept – one which is local, seasonal, cultivated and just a little bit wild. The Portlander is all about superb cuts of meat, prepared to perfection and finished in style. Bloody rare and rather well done, it’s the ideal place to eat meat and greet. Eye Magazine caught up with The Portlander’s new chef, Tim, to talk about their new menu. What is your main goal with the new Portlander menu? To source quality New Zealand products, and deliver them with old school passion and finesse, I want to deliver an honest, appetizing and sometimes innovative menu that provokes good conversation. What would be your favourite breakfast? Eggs Benedict and Champagne in bed! Tell us about some of your passions in the food industry? Uncomplicated, honest food, surrounding myself with chefs who are passionate, who always strive for perfection and have a laugh while doing it! Who do you look up to in the hospitality industry globally? Marco Pierre White, The Roux Brothers and every chef who is passionate and respects the industry.

Executive Chef Tim McClay-Talivai
What have been some of your career highlights up until now? The one that always sticks out is from when I was training at a Michelin starred restaurant in Brussels; we were flown via private jet to Zaire to cook dinner for then dictator President Mobutu – pretty surreal! We recently tried the vegetarian burger at the Portlander and it was the best we’d ever had – packed with vegetables and wrapped in lettuce – who created this burger? Our burger menu was created through a survey of our regular diners. The ‘Peacekeeper’
burger has been a hit with vegetarians and the carb-conscious alike. Once the need was noted, we decided to make it the best and biggest vegetable burger for miles – I’m glad we succeeded! What can we expect to see change on the menu in the next few months? The menu will be heavily led by the seasons. Desserts and entrées will be revamped – and the steak will stay King! Piece of Paradise
M
oments away from Hamilton City, The Narrows Landing is a piece of paradise; a year-round delight presenting exciting culinary developments in an amazing setting. Feeding your mind body and soul with unparalleled service, The Narrows Landing offers exceptional fine dining and outstanding wines aimed to relax and focus your energies. Eye Magazine caught up with the staff from The Narrows Landing to find out more... What is The Narrows Landing ethos? A dedicated and passionate drive to provide the best possible service to our clients so when they leave, they’re already looking forward to their next visit. What services does The Narrows Landing provide? Our accommodation features 15 stylish, spacious and well appointed suites, all of which have access via French doors, onto sweeping verandah’s that take in the views and birdsong. We’re also a popular venue for conferences and weddings, able to cater for small groups and those up to 200 guests. Our Head Chef Julian Acraman has designed new menus featuring simple, fresh food with a tasty modern approach – the feedback from our customers and clients has been exceptionally favourable! What separates The Narrows Landing from its competitors? Its inherent charm, coupled with such a beautiful location, is what truly sets us apart – but add fabulous food, great service and the versatility we offer – it’s a winning formula. Your rooms look beautiful – what features does each room have? The building itself is very unique and brings with it an appeal of its own. Stained glass panels feature throughout, blended with old recycled woods and recycled steel, all brought together, gives the rooms that sense of old world comfort but with 21st century facilities. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and have such an appealing style, with simply stunning views.

The Narrows Management Team (Left-Right): Jocelyn, Julian, Geetu, Yasser & Carla.
What can you tell us about the restaurant at The Narrows Landing? The restaurant is a conservatory style setting with large windows looking out onto our gardens. For the warmer months we have a substantial decking area for el fresco dining. The atmosphere is warm and inviting but with a sense of freedom to the outdoors. Our menus reflect nature’s clean and vibrant textures and tastes. Head Chef Julian, tell us about your cooking style? I have an Italian base to my cookery, with the endeavour to use the freshest and best products available. All cooked correctly using modern and classic techniques, well presented and keeping with current trends. I feel cooking is a passion not a job, and I feel that this is shown in the food I present. I have high ambitions and equally high standards for The Narrows Landing.
The Cellar
The Wine Tasting Room
Tell us a bit about the cellar and wine tasting room? An underground treasure trove, housing The Narrows Landing’s extensive wine collection and an exclusive venue for gastronomical events engineered by our Head Chef and Maitre de, the cellar and wine tasting room are an experience to remember. The principle of food and wine matching is to understand the balance between the flavours and texture of the food with the complexities of the wine and how they can best compliment one another. What’s in store for the future of The Narrows Landing? We are always looking for ways to improve, to introduce new tastes, to provide our guests the very best the Waikato has to offer. We’re also looking forward to the huge Fieldays event – a wonderful time for us and the Waikato.
What is the best part of your job? Geetu (Receptionist): The work environment The Narrows has and the service they provide to their internal and external customers. Carla (Event Manager): I get to meet so many different people and help them create fabulous events and unforgettable experiences. Jo (Head of Housekeeping): Job satisfaction. To turn a room around that may have seen too much fun, into a well presented, clean room for our next guest. Yasser (Maitre De): The Narrows offers you the chance to wear more than one hat – performing more than one role. You also can’t go wrong in a small establishment as you get to meet new people constantly and hold strong relationships with regulars. Julian (Head Chef): The best part is working in a progressive environment, sharing knowledge and passion with people, cooking with great local produce and great Hereford prime beef, as well as being creative on a day to day basis. What do you love about The Narrows Landing? Geetu: The unique location of The Narrows and the services we provide as well as the team that I work with, they’re extremely focused and work towards a common goal – to provide exceptional customer service. Carla: What I love most about The Narrows is how it stands proud up on the hill. What a fantastic landmark it is for the Waikato and the nest for so many memorable celebrations that I have helped become true. Jo: I love the beautiful grounds and the atmosphere. It is like another world when I come here, the tranquillity and birdsong; I also love the uniqueness of the building and the décor. Yasser: Working at the Narrows is never dull, it gives you plenty of opportunities and variety of work and there is always room for growth. Julian: The uniqueness of the property, the endless potential it has, Brian’s passion for the building and the supportive team environment. Ph: 0800 526 346 www.thenarrowslanding.co.nz

60 Seconds with a Celeb
G
reek native Spiros Poros discovered his passion for photography during his journey around the world, taking snapshots of people in their cultural environment. His photography has a very cinematographic appeal in the way it portrays its protagonists and their moods. Over time his photography has been recognizable for its distinct style that reflects his respects and thoughtfulness for the theme. His unique style has attributed greatly to his notability in the United States and in Greece, and has enabled him to shoot several magazine editorials for magazines, such as Vogue, In Style, Flaunt and Esquire. Constantly evolving revolutionizing his method has made
him a favourite photographer of fashion houses and celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Keira Knightley, Christopher Noth, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli, Megan Good, Michael Stipe, and supermodel Alesandra Amposio. Spiros has developed photography exhibitions and published display books including ‘Tattoo’, ‘Bodies and Behaviors’. His last exhibition – ‘Under Exposed – An Exclusive Photographic Exploration of Cuban Ballet and Boxing’ was shown in New York. His new upcoming exhibition titled ‘Love and Strife – Cosmic Cycle’ will take place in Auckland. Eye Magazine caught up with Spiros to ask him a few questions about what makes him tick…
Who is the most interesting person you have photographed and why? The most interesting person was Harvey Keitel, he is a genuine legend with so many stories to tell. Do you prefer fine photography or fashion photography? I prefer fine art photography, but the best is when I incorporate fine art in my fashion photography. What do you think of New Zealand women having cosmetic surgery? I think that every person should do what makes them happy. What’s your favourite New Zealand restaurant? My favourite is Ostro. Who do you regard as your role model? My role model is my grandfather, he was a famous writer. What is the best advice you’ve been given? Best advice was to ignore money. If you were prime minister for the day, what would be the first thing you would change? If I were Prime Minister, I would take care of youth problems first. If you had to choose an alternative career, what would it be? My alternative career would be a lawyer. What’s your highlight of the year so far? When I shot in Parthenon with Jennifer Lopez.

Eco Friendly Lodge
T
he multi award winning Stonefly Lodge is nestled on 56 hectares of private forest on the banks of the Motueka River, just a 50 minute drive from Nelson. When John and Kate Kerr first found the site several years ago, they were enthralled; “Kate and I just couldn’t resist it when we first saw it.” Coming from a strong sport fishing background, the couple took a chance on the old forestry skid site overlooking the Motueka River. The Motueka River is one of New Zealand’s finest brown trout rivers. Yet while the river and its surging, swirling rapids and languid pools will make a trout fisher’s pulse quicken, there’s so much more in terms of outdoor and local culture to explore within a day’s travel from the lodge. The luxury 5 star lodge is centrally located between three spectacular National Parks – Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi National Park –
62
making the lodge an ideal base from which to explore the region. Activities from the Lodge include fly fishing, sea kayaking, guided and unguided hiking tours, wine tasting, white water rafting, rock climbing, abseiling, horse riding tours and exploring the many art and craft studios in the region. Architecturally designed and engineered, the lodge has been built from natural stone and timber acquired from the property. The total complex is powered by alternative energy sources built on site to reduce the projects environmental footprint. Stonefly Lodge has gained a Qualmark Enviro Gold Award, which recognises its high standards in environmental practices. To earn tourism’s official environmental award, Stonefly Lodge has had to demonstrate effectiveness in energy efficiency, waste management and water conservation, with community activities and conservation initiatives also considered under
Qualmark’s strict environmental criteria. Owners John and Kate Kerr say they are very proud to receive this recognition from Qualmark, after many years of hard work building the lodge with environmental conservation and energy conservation as the principle focus, “there seems to be a perception in the tourism industry that an Eco Lodge or an environmentally sustainable lodge cannot achieve luxury status – we have shown that quality facilities, quality service and a luxury experience can be achieved without compromising the environmental integrity of the product”, says John Kerr. Specifically built with the environment in mind, the entire project is completely self contained and does not require power, water or waste water management from other sources. Power is supplied on site by a micro hydro generator, a wind generator and photo voltaic solar panels, all controlled by the latest in technology to
provide sustainable electricity to the lodge. All lighting in the lodge uses the energy efficient LED lights, the refrigerators are specifically designed for low energy use and no electricity is used to heat the lodge. The lodge’s total power consumption is less than half that of an average New Zealand household in fact! “It’s a great feeling to know that the water, wind and sun are working to keep our property functioning. All three sources of energy are so complimentary” says owner and manager John. The lodge interior focuses on the large stone double sided fireplace which provides the ambiance to the games room, dining room and sunroom. A large open kitchen adjoining the dining area offers the relaxed atmosphere where guests dine together, or private dining opportunities can also be catered for.

The lodge can cater for the novice to the experienced angler with packages that include all the

Special diets are easily catered for as well. Complete with library, a snooker table and the “Matai Bar”, guests have the ideal setting to relax after an exciting days fly
fishing or after exploring the numerous sites and attractions of the local region. Four guest rooms are located upstairs, complete with ensuites, heated towel rails, and private balconies overlooking the beautiful Motueka River and surrounding mountains. Bendemeer ...Queenstown’s Playground By Vanessa Green
O
n a recent trip to Queenstown I bestowed upon a new residential lifestyle development, Bendemeer. Ideally located just minutes away from Arrowtown, Lake Hayes and Queenstown’s international airport, Bendemeer is a high quality residential lifestyle development for Aucklanders or anyone needing an escape from the city. Bendemeer offers those seeking solitude and security, or gives people like me an opportunity to be part of a small and select community of owners, with its limited number of exceptional home sites. Upon talking to marketing executive Sarah Cairns, I learnt that since the day the development was completed, Bendemeer became recognised as one of Queenstown’s premier developments, gaining an increasing reputation as a well managed, well presented and high quality residential lifestyle block. Located amid some of central Otago’s most spectacular scenery, Bendemeer has tree laced lanes, gentle rolling pastures, private mountain lakes and rich wildlife. The development is positioned on an elevated, sun filled plateau and each site has breathtaking 360 views, particularly beautiful when the snow hits Queenstown! Cairns mentions that the design of each property has been created to make

the most of the seasonal views, beauty of the landscape and incorporate the superb outdoor living environment which makes this area so sought after. “With a unique blend of the traditional and contemporary design, added to the fine attention to detail, open living space and high quality construction, these sites bring together no greater comparison to the ultimate country lifestyle living option,” Cairns adds. Another addition to Bendemeer is The Woolshed. Nestled in an idyllic rural setting this is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a unique, rustic and breathtaking venue for functions, weddings, corporate retreats or romantic getaways. Whether you’re flying into Queenstown on holiday like I was, building your dream home, or simply looking for somewhere new to settle, there will never be a better time to become one of the few to own a property in this unique environment, as prices are dramatically low compared to inner-city prices. Bendemeer offers a year round, four-season experience with luxurious, secluded and secure home ownership in a remarkable landscape. A sanctuary of peace and tranquillity, Bendemeer is nestled in the adventure playground that we call Queenstown. Ph: 0508 bendemeer www.bendemeer.co.nz

Jane Shand Design
J
ane has worked with wool most of her life, growing up on a sheep farm at the bottom of the South Island. She learnt to knit and spin at an early age and created clothing, rugs, blankets and pictures from her own original designs throughout her busy life. Bringing up two children with her husband Brett in an old cottage on a quarter acre section in Redcliffs, combined with teaching English, left little time in recent years so Jane made the decision to leave teaching to turn her love of wool into a business. There are many unique aspects to Jane’s business which combines her love of design and the beautiful texture and warmth of merino. The first and most important aspect is the farm to fashion story. A unique partnership has developed between Jane and her farmers, Will, who grows her beautiful naturally coloured merino flock especially for her, and his parents Liz and Anton who supply her ultrafine white merino fibre from their combined farming enterprise in Middlemarch, Central Otago. There is friendship and trust embedded in this relationship as Jane relies totally on their expertise and skill in growing and classing the merino fibre to meet her exacting standards. Care in animal husbandry and in selection of the fibre are absolutely crucial to the qualities of the end product and working directly with the farmers in this way provides the utmost guarantee that the claims Jane makes about her products can be validated at every point, with testing results to prove. Another important aspect is the care taken in manufacturing the fibre. It has taken years of trial and error to ascertain the correct spinning tensions to use for particular products, help and advice from Ag Research at Lincoln University as well as support from many other advisors. Washing, knitting and weaving specialists have also been crucial in the development of the products and while not all of these facilities are available now in New Zealand, the bulk of Jane’s manufacturing remains in NZ despite the many challenges facing the wool industry here. All her products qualify for the Made in NZ label.

Key to the softness and warmth of Jane’s knitted and woven shawls and scarves is the fineness of the merino she uses. No one else in NZ manufactures products from ultrafine merino fibre ( under 16 micron) There are many reasons for this, not the least being the great difficulty and expense in doing so due to the special care needed in washing and spinning to avoid damage to such delicate fibre. Ultrafine merino fibre is also relatively rare ( just a few thousand bales grown in the world in any year) and requires very unique conditions in which to grow. Also most designers and manufacturers like to chemically treat merino for shrink resistance, something Jane has little wish to do as her products remain chemical free and natural. It is also very difficult to chemically treat ultrafine fibre and very few companies manage it. So she has a guarantee of completely natural
products and the only chemical used is dye for some of her products and where available eco-dyeing with metal free dyes is used. And of course the beautiful naturally coloured merino with which her scarves are woven and knitted are not dyed at all. Jane’s is a hand’s on business, she manages the whole supply chain from start to finish, including design and her products reflect the care taken, the naturalness of the fibre and the special qualities of merino. These include superior warmth, resilience and springiness, brightness, wicking ability in drawing moisture away from the body whilst maintaining even body temperature, and safety due to its non flammability. While all merino has these qualities, Jane’s untreated completely natural ultrafine and superfine merino embodies them in unique abundance. www.jsdesign.co.nz

The first Benihana restaurant was opened in 1964 on West 56th Street in New York City by founder Hiroaki “Rocky” Aoki at a time when Japanese cuisine was relatively unknown and having a chef prepare a meal at your table was completely unheard of. may have been a radical idea, but it was the recipe for success at Benihana. Today, the five star Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa in Queensland is home to the only Benihana Japanese Steakhouse in Australia and the restaurant is renowned as one of south east Queensland’s favourite dining experiences. In 2013, Benihana was recognized as the Best Japanese Restaurant in Queensland in the Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence and its easy to understand why. At Benihana, it’s not just a meal, it’s
an experience where guests are seated around a teppanyaki table while their chef prepares and cooks their meals on a teppan hot plate right before their eyes. The highly trained Benihana chefs are known as entertainers as well as culinary masters and create an unforgettable dining experience every time as they slice, dice and juggle utensils, toss eggs and create flaming onion volcanoes. A range of teppanyaki banquets are prepared at your table featuring combinations of fresh seafood, tender steak and succulent chicken. All banquets are
served with signature onion soup, followed by Benihana salad, a prawn appetiser, hibachi vegetables and steamed or fried rice. Also located on Level 3 is Benihana’s Sake Bar.
