Battered? Yeh. Beaten? Nah. At the helm are dedicated foodies Trevor Norling and Tina Nair who have spent the last decade perfecting award-winning fish and chips. They opened their Mt Eden eatery in January, aiming to create the “ultimate, salt-of-theearth chippie” where traditional cooking practices are moored alongside modern health consciousness. Everything is cooked fresh to order without additives and is home-made or locally sourced: market fresh fish is delivered daily; Pukekohe spuds and Northland kumaras are chipped in the kitchen every morning; the burger options feature home-made Angus beef patties, Sirloin steak, battered fish and herbed chicken breasts, served in freshly baked buns with slaw, dressing and home-made pickled beetroot. Choosing cholesterol-free, anti-oxident-rich Alfa One Rice Bran oil gives a healthier edge to the food as do the grilled seafood skewers, fresh salad and a Gluten-Free food range for Coeliacs who come from afar to enjoy the famously crispy batter. The menu has old and new Kiwi faves: battered, crumbed or grilled fish, saveloy hotdogs, home-made paua fritters, mushy peas and fish cakes, all served with salt, crushed pepper and the owners’ cheeky brand of in-house humour. What makes a great summer wine? Whilst this question seems fairly simple, it erupted with a raucous and fun discussion with the two winemakers behind Harwood & Hall Wine. Corey Hall and Digger Hennessy have known each other for over 30 years but it wasn’t until 2008 that the two of them started working together and Harwood Hall was born over a glass of wine (or two). So what does make a great summer wine? The families behind Harwood Hall believes that the quality of the fruit is absolutely imperative, the wine making is equally important and the bottling and storing of the wine is something that needs care and attention, but there’s a number of other variables that can have an impact on how much you enjoy your glass of wine. So what are some of the things to consider? According to Harwood Hall, variables such as wine selection, weather, time of the day/week, the company you keep, stress levels and your general mood can all have an impact on how you perceive the glass of wine you are drinking. For many, a glass of wine tastes better on a Friday – the end of the working week, or a Saturday night when you are enjoying a meal with family and friends. For others, a glass of wine is more enjoyable after a day of sporting activity or after a pay rise or when you find out you just sold your house! So we asked these two winemakers what they will be doing over the summer months to enjoy their summer wine wine selection: choosing lighter styles are a great option for summer lunch and dinners such as Rose, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris Spending time with family and friends and enjoying the good weather (fingers crossed) Playing golf, surfing Hanging out with the kids Mowing the vineyard rows!
