BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS FOR THE LONG TERM! Happy Holidays! MY Lifestyle Magazine literally walks the red carpet in this beauty edition with top VIP contributors. Designer Ralph Lauren sent Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes a chic, elegant dress for the cover from his latest fall collection. We were thrilled to see so much sophistication and class during the photo shoot at Hotel Americano in New York City. As Lopes gave us her final interview before she passes the crown to the next winner, our editorial team has many reasons to celebrate - MY Lifestyle Magazine has become a credible media outlet for bicultural chic Latinos. From the moment I received the call that we got the exclusive to interview Leila, I knew we were jumping into something big. I realized that corporations, clients, partners and readers are trusting us, and they believe in our mission. There is a sense of loyalty and good vibes from everyone who talks about this boutique publication. A lot of good stuff has happened since the last edition. We were invited to the most prestigious news organizations to present our editorial work. The New York Times invited Managing Editors Carlos Anaya and Carlos Mayorga to talk about diversity and inclusion in its program VOCES. News Corporation also called us for a panel to present Orgullo Latino, the first LGBT Latino leaders show produced by our managing editors. The list of invites, TV and celebrity appearances go on. During these holidays, I reflect more on my blessings and I am 100 percent convinced that we are creating a new trend. This new American reality of biculturalism is reflected on our pages - from 50 Cent performing at the Megaton concert to Prince Royce singing his favorite songs in English to Latinos. We celebrate with a good spirit of hope and optimism as 2013 arrives. Our audience is more than a language - they are eager to learn practical tools from top contributors including TV Host Jane Velez Mitchell, Celebrity Makeup Artist Yuko Takahashi, among others. Take a look at some of our articles - from “The sexiness of leadership,” to “Fabulous at every age” and the “In the eye of the beholder” there is more to describe the meaning of ‘being’ and beauty. We go more than skin deep. During the whole year, MY Lifestyle Magazine has become my best friend. By reading “Finding your equal partner for the purpose of spiritual growth” to “Putting the pieces back together after a heartbreak,” I feel connected. Our readers feel motivated, moved and touched by the dedication and talent of more than 50 credible contributors during 2012. No other bicultural publication provides that. I also want to congratulate our new sponsors, clients and media partners: Fox News Latino, Telemundo 47 and MundoFOX. We hope these professional relationships last for years. On a personal note in the middle of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy during the month of October and my own personal challenges, I surrendered because everything is part of a perfect plan. The universe works in divine order. There’s no question on that. Before the year ends, be willing to let the past go in order to have something new. Stay in peace, not pieces. Happy New Year! Felicidades!

S The MY Lifestyle team was all over Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Missed something? We’ve got you covered with a complete recap and all you need to know about the new trends by Megan Eileen McDonough • Photo credit: TRESemme Autumn may be in full swing but fashion is already a stiletto step ahead of the game. While the temperature in New York City continues to drop, things drastically heated up during this September’s highly-anticipated Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Showcasing both high-fashion and ready-to-wear trends from the world’s most established brands and innovative designers, onlookers watched as electric colors, animal prints and slick suits took center stage.

DECEMBER 2012 | JANUARY 2013
pring 2013 is shaping up to be a balanced blend of old and new inspirations. Channeling a 60s vibe much like the infamous characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, many designers sent brightly colored wide-legged trousers down the runway and paired the pant with stylish belts that added a chic factor to an otherwise slouchy look. Likewise, two-piece tailored suits were spiced up with bold color patterns and prints, while the more feminine knee-length swingy skirts made a welcomed comeback. Continuing with this season’s apparent pant obsession, many designers put their own spin on the classic garment. Diane Von Furstenberg paired pants under dresses and tunics while Tracy Reese added attention-grabbing sequins and unique prints to her trouser designs. Nicole Miller’s collection featured leggings in digital prints and floralpatterned pants. Ralph Lauren cleverly chose Spanish-style music to accompany his matador-themed collection featuring bolero jackets and jodhpur pants. Leather garments were interspersed between the wide array of digital prints, floral colors and feminine skirts that dominated this season’s trends. Far from the overdone “biker chick” style, designers found clever ways to make their leather pieces stand out from the crowd, with playful dresses and cutting edge construction. Perhaps inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey, leather harnesses popped up during the first few days of fashion week. Ethnic patterns and animal prints are set to dominate your spring wardrobe. Ozwald Boateng incorporated colorful African tribal prints into his jackets and slacks while other designers like Miele selected zebra, cheetah and leopard prints as the base for many garments. Mara Hoffman showcased a well-received Hawaiian-themed collection while Michael Kors stuck to his signature safari-worthy sporty swimsuits and jackets. As Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week came to a close, Couture Fash-
ion Week was there to steal the spotlight. Held twice a year for three consecutive days at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, many designers showcased collections reminiscent of their cultural background. Designers represented an impressive amount of countries including India, Nigeria, Peru, The Philippines and Switzerland. Joining forces for the first time ever, Republica Dominicana Fashion Week teamed up with Couture Fashion Week for a one time showcase of Latin American and Caribbean fashions. Event organizers and collaborators included CEO & Founder Jorge Diep, Fashion Coordinator Gina Constanza, along with Dreams in Heels PR and media partner MY Lifestyle Magazine. Known for being the first Dominican to earn the coveted title of Mister Universe Model, Erick Jimenez Sabater surprised the crowd by hitting the runway. Exhibiting Dominican designers included Robert Flores, Diani Mota and Wendy Luzon among others. Flores stuck to sharp menswear suits and swimwear while Mota channeled a movie star aesthetic with her red carpet-worthy evening gowns. Luzon showcased outfits resembling French-maid outfits with metal chains and jewelry used as statement accessories. Lounge Couture had the most wearable clothes for both men and women aiming for stylish but casual looks. Not to be forgotten during September’s fashion crazed month was Pamela Quinzi’s September 12th collaboration with Giuseppe Conte in which the designer unveiled her Spring/Summer 2013 stunning cocktail and custom shoe collection. Megan Eileen McDonough is a freelance writer and social media specialist based in New York City. She is also the founder of Bohemian Trails, an online travel magazine covering global art and culture for the avant-garde traveler. Megan previously worked for a fashion agency in London and an international record label in New York.

FASHION MEETS PHILANTHROPY RALPH LAUREN
THE PINK PONY FUND FOR CANCER CARE AND PREVENTION by Carlos Anaya
H
e has built a global fashion empire. Ralph Lauren is an icon and historically, one of the top American designers ever. For the past 45 years, the Ralph Lauren label has grown into a multi-billion dollar global brand, representing sophistication and high quality in design. Ralph Lauren has grown to more than 300 stores worldwide and includes a number of brand names like Polo by Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Black Label and many more. In recent years, Lauren has been honored by French President Nicholas Sarkozy with the prestigious Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur award in recognition of his contributions as a designer, business leader and philanthropist. Mayor Michael Bloomberg awarded him the Key to the City of New York, an bestowed to select individuals for outstanding civic contributions. He is still the only designer to receive the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s four highest honors - Womenswear Designer of the Year, Menswear Designer of the Year, Retailer of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement Award. “I have always had a clear vision,” he said in his biography. “I wanted to develop quality products and create a whole world around that. It means taking risks, going with what you feel, but never losing sight of your vision and conviction.” Ralph Lauren also stands out as a multicultural brand. In 1993, Ralph 10

Lauren chose Tyson Beckford, an African-American model, to be the front model for the Polo line of male sportswear. For MY Lifestyle Magazine, the brand dressed Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes for the cover photoshoot. In addition to high-end fashion and a huge legacy, the Ralph Lauren brand is also recognized for its social responsibility. One of the most notable causes is the Pink Pony campaign, launched by this legendary philanthropist in 2000 as an effort to uplift cancer care in underserved communities, especially with preventative treatment. “Breast cancer is not just a woman’s issue - it affects all of us: the brothers, husbands, fathers, children, friends,” says Lauren. “Pink Pony is our effort in the fight against cancer.” It was through this visionary’s leadership that helped encourage others in the fashion industry to stand up against breast cancer. His campaign has raised over $40 million for distribution to breast cancer charities in 13 countries. In 2003, Polo Ralph Lauren established the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention in Harlem, New York City. The facility is for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer through various forms of care. At MY Lifestyle Magazine, we honor Ralph Lauren, not only as a multicultural brand, but one that has stood as a model for others in giving back to the causes that matter.
Pink Pony is Ralph Lauren’s global initiative to fight cancer. The organization’s mission is to reduce disparities in cancer care in medically underserved communities. The push is to ensure that everyone has access to treatment at an earlier, more curable stage. Purchasing Pink Pony products benefits the Pink Pony Fund of the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation. These products are for sale on the Ralph Lauren website. www.ralphlauren.com

Not only has he done hair and makeup for a host of Latin celebrities like Gloria Estefan and Shakira, he’s also worked for several mainstream superstarts like Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway and Johnny Depp. “You have to keep changing it up. You never stop learning,” says Uribe, reflecting on his career up to now. “Be on top of everything. Come up with new ideas. You’re always striving to bring your best to clients.” And the best is yet to come. Uribe owns the popular Haus Fashion Lab in the Wynwood Arts District, an emerging arts destination in the city. “I was the first boutique to open there,” explains Uribe. “Right now, things are much better and a lot of stores are opening. It’s an up-and-coming area. It will soon be known as the Soho of Miami. I’m grateful I had that vision to stay in there.” His boutique is closely tied to the community and features the work of top local and international designers. Another thing that sets Haus Fashion Lab apart is that it’s known as the place where art meets fashion, doubling as an art gallery. Uribe understands fashion to the core and he’s creating a new line of clothing called “Skyline,” dedicated to where he grew up: New York City. With 34 pieces so far, the label has already caught the attention of retailers. This entrepreneur launched a hair product line in 2008 called Ube, which features a variety of top-quality curling irons and flatirons. He’s also in the process of launching his makeup line by Spring 2013. Born in Colombia and raised mostly in Queens, New York, Uribe developed his talent for styling at an early age. His mother was a hairstylist and

he credits her with teaching him what beauty is. “I grabbed that magical touch she had,” recalls Uribe. “I was just good at it. It was just from observing that I naturally learned and know so much.” “The most beautiful woman in the world is my mother,” says Uribe. “She’s a strong woman and very smart business woman. She took care of me alone and made me what I am today. Seeing her struggle and work hard to have her business and make time for me.” As Uribe reflects on his accomplishments doing makeup and hair for celebrity clients, he says he was in the right place at the right time when he got his big break, filling in for someone on the set of legendary show “The Sopranos.” Now, years later, we asked Uribe his secret to working with a celebrity. “You have to mind your own business,” replies Uribe. “You have be a multitasker and do many things at once. That sets you apart. I like the adrenaline; that rush. Sometimes, you’re on the set at a concert or film and have to get it done now.” And Uribe knows how to perform under pressure. He’s produced covers for Playboy Magazine and styled for editorials in several top publications like Vogue, Elle, Maxim, InStyle and People. Uribe has also styled and done makeup for a number of television programs, commercials, music videos and concerts. This top stylist has also done hair, makeup and styling for MY Lifestyle Magazine photo shoots in Miami. So, what’s the secret to success on such a high level? “Be a perfectionist,” says Uribe. “There is a lot of competition, but I don’t compete with anyone. I compete with myself. A lot of people can do things, but do you do them different? Step out of the box and search within yourself. If you really love what you do, it makes a difference.”

Cooler temperatures,
Makeup products that will ensure you always look your best The leaves are falling and autumn is in full swing. Winter is just around the corner. Is your beauty stash up to date with the products to get you through the upcoming season? Here are some of my tips and key products to help you transition to cooler weather without leaving that glow behind.
When you’re trying to maintain summer’s sunkissed glow, matte or overly sparkly bronzers can look dull and powdery. Sculpt your features while adding warmth and dimension by choosing a glowy bronzer. Make sure to dust onto the forehead along the hairline, and below the cheekbones to emphasize them. I suggest Givenchy Poudre Bonne Mine Healthy Glow Powder. Retail: $50.00
Take your eyeshadow from subtle to sultry with this neutral palette from Illamasqua. For a daytime look, try the matte ivory shadow on the browbone, a wash of the golden shade on the lid and blend the dark brown shade into the crease. For the evening, deepen the crease with the blackest shadow and smudge it into eyeliner for smoky drama.
Fall doesn’t mean you have to put away your bright colors. Incorporate a summery pop of hot red, pink or coral to brighten up any look. This works well with a cat eye or an updo. To switch it up, try a lipstick with a more matte finish like NARS Heat Wave. Retail: $24.00
Apupa Yuyaynin’s Jewelry is made of .950 Silver. Handcrafted by South American Artisians, Apupa Yuyaynin brings a touch of modern inspiration as well as old world elegance and craftmanship.
Illamasqua Neutral Palette. Retail: $42.50
This is a great advanced eyeshadow primer good for smoothing fine lines, neutralizing lid color and preventing creasing. Apply it on alone or with eyeliner for a clean daytime look or use it as a base before applying that smoky eye. Available in five shades to ensure you’ve got your lids perfectly covered.
Urban Decay’s new weightless liquid foundation has beautiful coverage without masking the skin. The finish is matte, but luminous. Sodium hyaluronate, anti-wrinkle peptide Matrixyl 3000 and green tea are an added skincare bonus. They offer 18 shades with different undertones, so you can easily find your perfect match.
Laura Mercier Eye Canvas. Retail: $26.00
Urban Decay Naked Skin. Retail: $38.00
It’s been a while since you made it to the beach, but that doesn’t mean you have to look like it. Maintain tousled waves with a little help from ALTERNA Summer Hair Ocean Waves. The surf spray locks in moisture, adding beachy volume to your tresses without weighing them down. Mist hair and then scrunch to perfection. Retail: $20.00

Jones was the first Mexican woman to win the Miss Universe crown. She later became the official organizer of Miss Mexico, empowering other contestants to follow in her footsteps. This beauty has also served as judge on the hit Univision show “Nuestra Belleza Latina,” a competition featuring Latinas from all over the country.
She is widely known as the ex-wife of Marc Anthony and she had two children with the superstar. Torres later became an actress and is currently working on projects in Hollywood. She was discovered at 17 and was invited to compete in the Miss Puerto Rico pageant, moving on to take the Miss Universe title in the competition held in Mexico City, despite rumors that she was under 18 at the time of her win. Those rumors were later debunked. She became an ambassador for UNICEF, an organization she continued supporting after her reign.
One of the most controversial winners. It was reported that she almost had to forfeit the title after gaining a noticeable amount of weight during her reign. She kept the crown. Machado is now an actress. Many remember her as the only Miss Universe to appear in Playboy Magazine, after she posed in the magazine’s Mexico edition in 2006. She will soon star in “¡Mira quién baila! on Univision, the Latino version of Dancing with the Stars.
This winner from the Ponce, Puerto Rico, took the crown when Puerto Rico hosted the 50th anniversary of the pageant in 2001. She remained in New York after passing own the title, attending film school. She is currently an actress, having starred in Spanish and English television roles, as well as a few Off-Broadway productions. Quiñones made her musical debut at Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2013 last August.
Pasek grew up in Poland and Panama. She replaced Miss Universe winner Oxana Fedorova, who gave up her crown for personal reasons. Before competing, Pasek worked as a model. She was later appointed as tourism ambassador for Panama and now lives in Los Angeles, where she was married in 2009.
This beauty was the first Dominican woman to claim the Miss Universe title and one of the youngest, winning it at age 18. During her reign, she worked extensively with HIV/ AIDS organizations around the globe and visited 30 countries. Later, she became a television star and singer. Vega also owns two boutiques in Miami, where she now lives. She married NBA basketball player Al Horford in 2011.
Rivera was the fifth woman from Puerto Rico to win the Miss Universe title. She later moved on to star in a few television shows. She has been in a relationship with J.J. Barrea, a top Latino NBA player, since 2010. The two have a child named Sebastian. Rivera is still acting and she’s currently working on a movie project.
Mendoza traveled extensively during her reign as Miss Universe, working on humanitarian causes and promoting HIV/AIDS awareness. After passing along the crown, she modeled and served on the panel for the Miss Universe competition in 2012. She is widely known for appearing on the hit U.S. television show “Celebrity Apprentice.”
This winner became the first Miss Universe winner to be crowned by another winner of her own country. Her background includes Ukrainian, Polish and Russian. Her maternal grandfather immigrated to Venezuela during Soviet rule. During her reign, she served as presenter at the Latin Billboard Awards and raised awareness for humanitarian causes. She also appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
A former model, Navarrete is known as one of the most charismatic Miss Universe winners. MY Lifestyle Magazine Managing Editor Carlos Anaya got an exclusive interview with this beauty inside her New York apartment in 2010. She has appeared on numerous magazine covers, and became a spokesperson for L’Oreal Paris and Old Navy. Navarrete is also pursuing a television career and will soon make her debut in the movie “Agente Sánchez.”

er electricity has the ability to influence millions. It all started in São Paulo, more than a year ago, when the Brazilian crowd began loudly shouting “Angola” as the pageant came to its final stage. Leila Lopes was clearly the crowd favorite, and her mesmerizing personality continues to capture the hearts of people in every nation she visits. Only the fourth winner from an African nation in the pageant’s 60-year history, Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes is definitely turning heads. From the moment she walked into the boutique Hotel Americano on New York City’s west side for her exclusive MY Lifestyle Magazine cover shoot, it was obvious that Lopes still has the ability leave people in awe everywhere she goes. What many don’t know is that the journey of Leila Lopes almost didn’t happen. As a young woman in Angola’s southern province of Benguela, Lopes stood out among other women for her tall height, beauty and education. She studied business management at Suffolk University in England and was poised to do great things. But competing for Miss Angola and ultimately Miss Universe wasn’t one of them. “I was growing so tall and they were like, ‘Leila, you should try to compete for Miss Angola,’ remembers Lopes, of the time her family urged her to complete. “I was like, ‘No, I can’t. I can’t do that. I can’t talk to the public. I can’t compete.’”
“being from Africa and being an example for all the African women who thought it was impossible for a black girl to win this competition.” But then, a change of heart. “I saw all the work the winner could do helping the ones who need,” continues Lopes. “In Angola, we have so many social problems. Seeing the winner do so much to help the community, I told myself, ‘This is what I want to do.’ It’s like using my beauty for helping people who need.” During the shoot, Leila definitely loosened up, showing her fun side when she began dancing to Shakira’s “Waka Waka - This time for Africa” song. Draped in a black and silver gown by Ralph Lauren, Leila confidently displayed her long, black hair as she posed for several shots. She has come a long way since being born in a nation that at the time was in a bloody civil war. Lopes has dedicated her reign to creating an awareness for HIV/AIDS prevention here in the United States and abroad since winning the crown, teaming up with the Latino Commission on AIDS and the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, both here in New York. Lopes was also named an ambassador to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), an effort to stop land degradation, which is an issue that affects a number of parts of Africa. She’s taken the stage during New York Fashion Week and has traveled to dozens of countries. She serves as a symbol of pride for beautiful women of all shades and skin tones, especially back home. When asked about her stance as a symbol of pride for beautiful women, Lopes revealed that one of the best things about winner was,

“being from Africa and being an example for all the African women who thought it was impossible for a black girl to win this competition.” “For them to see me,” she continues, “to see that I am black, it was great. They treat me really well and they are so proud of me.” But what about women who don’t feel beautiful? “You have to thank God for being alive,” says Lopes. “Nobody knows what really a beautiful person is, so don’t worry, if you have pimples today, it’s nothing. If you have a bad hair day, it’s nothing. Feel beautiful, feel sexy and it will shine. It will show outside.” Besides standing as a beauty ambassador, helping those in need has become her top priority. Just days before her MY Lifestyle Magazine cover shoot, Lopes wrapped a six-country tour through Africa. When she passes the crown to the next winner, she will continue to draw attention to her home continent, hopefully bringing more hope to the millions there who need it. “If we invest in education, we can overcome all of these problems that we still have,” says Lopes. “And a lot of people have the same interests as me, helping people build schools, hospitals, so, when I finish my reign, I’ll partner with all of these people and try to still doing good stuff, good things.”

n MY Lifestyle Magazine’s exclusive with Miss Universe Leila Lopes, we present one of the world’s most stunning women on the lighter side of glamour. In a fashion sense, that means sans tiaras, sashes or elaborate updos. The result? A still elegant, yet more human, Leila. Leila’s tresses were enhanced for this story with brightly hued extensions courtesy of 1 SHE USA. Pink stands for breast cancer awareness and this was the perfect opportunity to showcase SHE USA’s range of colors, starting with baby pink strands. The pieces are a cinch to add, using a simple clip that adheres to Leila’s own hair. When behind the chair at Avalon Salon & Spa in New York’s West Village, I frequently field requests for bold shades like lime freeze, fuchsia, orange crush or navy blue. These clip-ins are simply brilliant, not to mention commitment free. When your moment has passed, simply take it out and put it in the drawer until the urge strikes again. If neon pink isn’t your thing, don’t fret. There are plenty of natural shades in the SHE USA collection to suit your tastes. To get Leila’s sleek and flowing locks, it’s all about prep work. If you have natural hair like she does, or simply curly and thick, don’t shampoo before styling. Ever heard of the “no poo” movement? Your hair loves the natural oils from your scalp. If you feel too “greasy” or “gross,” a thorough rinsing will not only make you fresh and clean but will carry those oils to the ends of your hair, acting as a self-conditioner. Follow this with actual conditioner, rinse and finish with a cold rinse to close the cuticle and add shine to the strands. These crucial steps will ensure you get the best blowout possible. For a good blowout, you will need two brushes. One large, round thermal brush for the mid shaft and ends (medium-sized if hair is shorter) and a small, round, bristle brush, to pull the kink out of your root area. I prefer the 2 100 percent boar bristle brushes made by Phillips for maximum polish and shine. Depending on how much body you’re going for, touch up the mid-shaft with a flat iron. Craig Carter is Leila’s personal hair stylist, and he pressed the hair from her scalp to her ends, because we wanted the hair to be silky and sleek. Products comprise the basic frame of your structure, so don’t skip them. Layering in a light leave-in conditioning mist, and straightening balm cocktailed with a shine serum will seal the deal. Of late my favorites have been from Unite: 3 7 Seconds Condition, Leave In Detangler, Lazer Straight Relaxing Fluid and Shina Liquid Gloss. Accompanied by her personal makeup artist, Yuko Takahashi, Leila’s foundation was created by blending 4 Derma Blend professional with 5 Bobbi Brown Oil Free Even Finish.Yuko’s arsenal of makeup brushes is by Kryolan, the official sponsor of Miss Universe two years running. 6 Bronzer is Mineralized Skinfinish by MAC and lashes 7 Maybelline’s Colossal Volume Express mascara. Smoky eyes, warm contouring and a nude lip in one scene convey high drama, while brighter eye shadows and pink flambé lips in another lighten things up considerably. Leila’s complex skin tones provide the perfect backdrop for the Fall 2012 color palette. French roast, rhapsody, tangerine tango, Olympian blue and bright chartreuse are working overtime this season.

Treating these women requires a great deal of experience and very few doctors dedicate their practices to Hispanic and African American patients. Here are some helpful tips to making sure your skin receives the best care.
he wonderful thing about the annual Miss Universe Pageant is that it is a celebration of beauty in every color. As a board-certified plastic surgeon in New York, the great majority of my patients are women of darker skin tones. Making sure you receive the best care requires knowledge about the many types of treatments and products for women of color, as treatments and products can be very different. These patients are more prone to dark spots (hyperpigmentation), hypertrophic and keloid scars, and can have bad reactions with treatments that produce heat or irritation. First, be sure to ask your plastic surgeon, dermatologist or spa professional if they have extensive experience in treating patients of your skin tone. You can start by observing other people in the waiting room, and with the before and after pictures they show you. Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH), whereby every pimple, scratch or rash creates darkness, can also be a common problem. The best way to avoid this is by limiting irritations. For shaving, sometimes a single blade razor is best, as the multiblade models can clip the hair so short that it curls under the skin creating razor bumps. Even something as simple as using your cellphone can cause irritation. Putting the device next to your face can cause bacteria to enter your skin and create acne. A way to avoid this to either carry wipes to clean your phone or use an earpiece. As for the treatments I recommend at Yspa, one of the best is the SilkPeel. This is an advancement on traditional microdermabrasion because it can also infuse medication into the deeper layers of your skin. I think of it as a wet microdermabrasion. It mechanically cleans the skin as well as brightens with prescription products. It is very safe for all skin types and a series of these peels often can tremendously improve your complexion.

For difficult dark spots or hormonal skin changes after pregnancy, I often prescribe Obagi NuDerm®. This system of products is the most effective for evening out the skintone in women of color. It is only available with a prescription through your doctor. At Yager Esthetics|Estetica™, we have been using it for almost 15 years with great success. One thing about lasers and darker skin types - they can be dangerous if not used properly and/or if the provider is not well trained and experienced. Lasers generate heat, which can cause darkening and burns if the energy is too high. African American and Hispanic women must use a much more gradual approach with lower settings to safely realize treatments like laser hair removal, skin resurfacing or even vein treatments. Always make sure to do a test spot a few weeks in advance to ensure no poor reactions. In New York and many other states, these treatments are often done by estheticians and medical assistants of varying levels of training, so you must find out who is treating you and how much experience that person has. With these tips, you can feel more secure about seeking treatments for your skin type. Dr. Jeffrey Yager is a board certified plastic surgeon, and the founder of Yager Plastic Surgery and Yager Esthetics | Estética™ in the Washington Heights neighborhood New York City, where he has established a center of excellence in cosmetic plastic surgery of the face, breast, and body dedicated to the Hispanic community. Fabulousness at every age
How to embrace your own attitude and appearance in all stages of your life by Damon L. Jacobs
D
oes it ever seem strange that you are made to feel bad about the most natural process in the world? Aging is the one thing everyone has in common, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, class, language, religion, or political affiliation. So why is there so much shame and embarrassment about the most human commonality? Because we have constantly been taught to associate getting older with shame, guilt and limitation. Several years ago, I wrote a book titled “Absolutely Should-less,” which offers tools for managing depression and stress by challenging harmful “shoulds.” The messages, “you should look young, you should not have wrinkles, you should not get gray hair,” are delivered very early in life. If you have ever judged yourself for getting older, gotten worried about a wrinkle, criticized yourself about a sagging piece of skin or experienced dread about a birthday, then you have been conditioned to believe toxic notions of aging. And you can change them! As my own “40” benchmark approached last year, I felt more charged and empowered than ever before. When I saw that was not the general consensus of my friends and clients, I wondered how I could help others to embrace this inevitable experience. I proceeded to write down a list of tools that assisted me in embracing age, appearance, and attitude at all stages:
3. Change Is Good
One of the hardest things to handle at any age is change, especially when it is determined by other people. Change might be painful at times, it might be inconvenient and it definitely can be scary. At the same time, every change presents you with an opportunity and a challenge. The trick of being “young” at any chronological age is to embrace and accept changes. Conversely, it is a sign of aging to fight and resist them. 4. Practice Gratitude
Take five minutes in the morning to write down a list of five things you are grateful for. It is so easy to get into the habit of focusing on what could go wrong, what is missing or what hasn’t gone right. But that habit will lead you feeling stressed and looking tired. A regular practice of gratitude allows you to feel centered, sexy and ready to take on fresh challenges throughout your day. 5. Do Something That Scares You
People become “old” when they get too comfortable and complacent. At least once a year, take on a new challenge, hobby or project that scares you. It could be performing in public, volunteering in private or even jumping out of an airplane. The trick is to keep your body and spirit consistently replenished with new experiences and adventures.

1. Eliminate “Shoulds” From Your Vocabulary
I challenge anyone who feels bad about themselves, or who fears getting older, to try going one day without using the word “should” against themselves and others. Changing rigid and unreasonable expectations enable you to get older, feeling empowered, confident, and strong. 2. Let Go Of What Others Think About You
Most people spend far too much time concerned what others think or say about them. As long as you are clear on your goals and take action with integrity, then you can be released from the exhaustion of worrying what other people think. 28

“When it comes down to it, beauty confidence is about ‘Being’ you”
Have you ever considered what it means to “Be?” When you are “Being,” you are present in your own reality, living in the moment and not dwelling in the past.
B
eauty is a total reflection of all areas of your life, including how you care for your body - what foods you put in your mouth, the activities you participate in, the relationships you cultivate and your general outlook on who you are and how you live your life. Your beauty confidence is a total sum of your “Being’ matched with how you perceive yourself. “Being” is a major component in this formula because when you honor your beauty inside and out, you create a wealth of confidence within yourself. You surround yourself with like-minded individuals, participate in activities that bring you joy and laughter, and spend time with people who support and love you. “Beauty” and “Being” are one in the same. Beauty is confidence. Beauty is femininity. Walking in self-love makes you radiate from within. If you want to increase your joy, walk in love, set your mind, create a plan and get creative.

DECEMBER 2012 | JANUARY 2013
To guide you to “Be” your most beautiful, confident self, here are nine ways to build and maintain your beauty confidence: 1. Regarding self-expression and creativity, what daily regimens do you have that contribute to your overall health? Are you making time for an exercise routine? Whether it is salsa dancing, roller blading or a walk at sunset, getting physical exercise in your life contributes to a lean body, a healthy, stress free lifestyle and longevity. Get moving! 2. When was the last time that you bought an article of clothing that made you feel like a million bucks? The power of appearance is one of the most important tools that communicate who you are to the world. There is truth in the saying ‘When you look good, you feel good.’ 3. Believe it or not, glowing skin starts from within. Re-evaluate your vitamin and skincare routine in order to maximize your radiance. Make sure you receive your maximum vitamin intake through superfoods that help you feed your body as well as nourish your skin. 4. Recognize that there is power in the words you choose. As you speak words of encouragement, love and creativity, you are in a positive frame of mind, allowing you to be fully present, and enjoy each and every moment. Words define your reality. 5. ‘Being’ in the moment is a state of mind that you enjoy once you let go of obsessive worrying and negative thinking. Meditation is an excellent tool to help calm your mind and focus on your heart, giving you a deeper
connection to your body. Mind-body connection is as important as food and water is to your ability to function. All you need is 15 minutes a day to clear the thoughts that clutter your head. Find a quiet spot and concentrate on ‘Being.’ 6. What you focus on will expand. Have you heard of a vision board? Vision boards are used to visualize what you desire to manifest in your life. Have you thought about your goals, dreams and aspirations? Imagine what you want your life to look like and use the vision board to show what you want. 7. Feed your soul. Take time to be alone with yourself. Whether it’s a good book, an art class or spa day, spending quality time alone on a monthly basis actually contributes to your self-love. Remember, ‘Beauty’ and ‘Being’ are one in the same. When you learn to love the time you spend with yourself, others will love spending time with you. 8. Align yourself with people who are positive, supportive and likeminded. Surround yourself with those who are seeking a passionate and purposeful life. Also, removing negative people from your sphere of influence is one of the healthiest ways to build self-confidence. When you receive support rather than criticism, it is easier to be motivated to make positive changes. 9. Learn to love the woman you see when you look in the mirror. What you see should be a reflection of your thoughts, words and actions. When you live a life of congruency in all areas, taking care of yourself on the inside and out contributes to your highest form of beauty confidence. The sexiness of leadership A below-the-surface inquiry into what makes a leader attractive by Richard Oceguera • Photo Credit: Joe Tanis
I
recently spent a week in beautiful downtown Chicago attending the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce business and leadership conference. There I was, surrounded by 500 men and women from across the country who either own a small business, hold an important position at a Fortune 500 company or run an LGBT chamber of commerce. I looked for signs that pointed to a connection between leadership and sexiness. Could these two concepts be related? Is there really anything sexy about being a leader? One afternoon, I had the great pleasure of observing a talk showstyle interview in front of a live audience of hundreds, between the brilliant Jennifer Brown of Jennifer Brown Consulting and James Turley, the CEO of Ernst & Young. It was a fascinating match up between a perfectly poised woman with beauty pageant looks and one of the most powerful men in the corporate world. The two began an elegant dance of question and answer and I found myself transfixed by the conversation on the stage. It wasn’t exactly their words that captivated me, rather, it was their ability to fill the room with vivid images, feelings and ideas when just moments before there was nothing in the air. I was stirred, aroused if you will, simply by being in the presence of this dynamic duo. But why and how could I be stimulated by listening to a business interview? On the surface, it’s something that does not sound remotely sexy. Yet something moved inside of me that somehow left me transformed. Watching Mr. Turley and Ms. Brown (who happens to be a business colleague I’ve worked with in the past) in action was riveting - much like one might be captivated by watching the gold medal Gymnast Gabby Douglas on the balance beam. There is something fulfilling and exciting about seeing a performer in all her glory. Perhaps it evokes one’s own inner desires 32

to soar and excel? During the week, I polled a number of my colleagues by asking the question, “Is leadership sexy?” In every case I received an immediate “yes!” When I asked why, I received a variety of interesting responses: “leadership is sexy because authority inspires,” “people who dare to be different are attractive” and “Absolutely! Confidence exudes sexiness.” Still, with all of my probing, I was not quite able to articulate how being a leader translates to being sexy. Clearly, this is not simply about physical beauty (although that certainly is an advantage). One of my colleagues, Scott Pierce, CEO of Odyssey Leadership, asked me, “Well, what do you find sexy about being the president of the chamber?” I thought for a minute and realized that what I love most about my role as a community leader is creating new opportunities to connect to our members. It gives me great satisfaction when I hear the successes of members who participate in our programs. Then, Scott said, “Well, when you think about it, sex is about creating something that wasn’t there. So creation therefore is sexy.” That’s when it all clicked. Humans are imbued with an awesome power to create something from nothing. Isn’t that exactly what leaders do? We innovate, stimulate and move people from one paradigm to another, whether in the mind’s eye or in physical space. And that is, indeed, sexy. A fresh start
A new year means new opportunities. Here’s how to get a jumpstart for 2013 by Deyanira Martinez
W
ith the arrival of a new year, many of us create expectations and resolutions to improve our lives and health. Some of us vow to finally lose those last 10 pounds, others want to become an allaround better person. All that’s lacking is just the final motivation and plan of action to look and feel spectacular. HOW DO YOU BECOME A MORE BEAUTIFUL AND BETTER YOU IN 2013? First, remember that beauty is a direct reflection of your interior. That’s right, it starts on the inside. There are no restrictions. Things like age or skin color are not factors. Rather, it’s how we pamper and care for the temple that is our body that will determine how our outer beauty radiates and shines. WATER: THE LIQUID OF LIFE This year, make the commitment to drink the standard eight glasses of water daily and see your skin rejuvenate within in a few weeks. Hydrated skin looks more radiant and youthful. You may also lose a few pounds. Water suppresses the appetite and increases metabolism, making you feel full of energy. On the other side of the coin, one of the most common causes of fatigue is dehydration. GET ON THE MOVE A moderate activity accompanied by a good diet will do wonders for your energy level and your mood. You don’t need to run a marathon. By walking 20 to 30 minutes a day you will notice significant benefits in a short time. GREEN IN YOUR DIET Start by reducing your intake of carbohydrates and red meat. Include more vegetables and fruits in your daily diet. Red meat stays in the body longer than other foods before it is digested. Some experts say the process of putrefaction of meat inside us is the cause of many serious and fatal diseases. 34

YOUR SKIN Invest in a good facial cream according to your skin type that contains high SPF and an anti-aging cream for the eye area. The constant use of these creams will give you a much more youthful appearance. CORRECTOR OR ILLUMINATOR: Another great idea. In seconds, it can transform a dull and tired appearance into a radiant face. Never stop using it, especially in the area under the eyes. PAMPER YOURSELF Use moisturizing liquid soap to maintain soft skin. Under no circumstances should you go to sleep without removing your makeup. This practice cleans your pores and allows the skin to breath. Also, sleeps like a Goddess. A good night’s sleep will improve your daily performance. Pamper yourself, love yourself and spend time with yourself. Meditate, pray, talk to God and ask for guidance from the universe. Connect and get into perfect harmony with the wonderful human being you are. My dear friends, let’s start 2013 being more beautiful, healthy, full of energy and ready to conquer the world. Blessings and a prosperous and Happy New Year! The love you deserve
Finding your equal partner for the purpose of spiritual growth by Beloved
E
veryone wants to be loved and accepted. But how do we find that special partner who shows us unconditional love and will see us as beautiful as we are? How do we find the one who won’t want to change us into his or her idea of who we should be? is this all possible? The answer is yes. You can experience true love on this planet called earth. You can find your spiritual partner and enjoy a beautiful romantic relationship. But there is a catch. Finding your spiritual partner is an inside job. The reality is that you must first find true love within yourself. How can you expect to be treated with love, kindness and respect when you are not giving that to yourself? Your relationships in the world are a direct reflection of your relationship with yourself. What we believe determines what we make true. We have been loaded with erroneous concepts that block our good. The reason why many marriages fail is because people enter the relationship with limiting beliefs and burdens of old pain. They create their relationships based on preconceived notions and on experiences of the past. In order to enjoy healthy relationships, it is important to clear disruptive emotional patterns, release faulty thoughts and heal old pain. In addition, we must understand that we are ever evolving beings. Today’s man cares about the earth, the young and the elderly. Today’s woman is seeking self-empowerment and doesn’t need a man to protect her. The two sexes are more similar than different and both yearn for the same - a truthful relationship that allows them to relax and be themselves, a union that is

an uplifting, fulfilling and satisfying experience. It is of utmost importance to understand that this applies to both straight men and women, as well as gay and lesbian individuals. True love is not discriminating. It is available to all, regardless of gender, social background, ethnicity or sexual orientation. With the lucidity and peace that healing brings, we can set clear intentions that can attract us to our spiritual partner. However, for this to be possible, we must include the wisdom of the heart. Love is a healing energy too potent to be ignored. As the lyrics from the song “The Power of the Dream” tell us, “your mind will take you far, the rest is just your heart. Your fate is all your own creation.” We are the architects of our own reality and when we embrace the greatness within us, we have access to the infinite forces of creation. True power, love and wisdom are in the heart, and it is there in its depths that the answer to our quest resides. If we focus within and trust, we shall find what we have been seeking for so long. And when we fully embrace the divine love that lies within us, we then attract its equal in human form. Beloved is a spiritual healer and a transformational relationship specialist. Putting the pieces back together How to recover from heartbreak by Charlie the Matchmaker
I
t is sad to say, but if you are an adult living in today’s society, you have most likely suffered a broken heart at some point in your life. And I can tell you that in in my line of work as a matchmaker, every single client I work with has had to heal their broken heart and move on. A bad breakup can make it seem like it is the end of the world, but don’t let it get you down. Take some time to heal and get right back up. Whether your breakup was yesterday or a while ago, here are some basic guidelines to help you heal and move on. 1. Time heals all wounds When a broken-hearted person comes to me, the first question I ask is “How long ago was your breakup?” My advice is that it takes a good six months to lick your wounds and get back into the dating game. It is very important to not stay out of the dating world for too long. Some people believe that you should take longer to heal if you just got out of a long term relationship. I say “get right back on that horse!” Too many times, I have seen people take too long to heal and they find themselves unable to get back in the swing of dating. Don’t let this happen to you. 2. Forgive and forget Sometimes, when a relationship ends badly, we end up carrying so much hatred in our heart that it makes it difficult to find happiness again. My advice is simple. Try to leave your broken relationships in the past. Bringing them up over and over again can make the healing process that

much more difficult. If forgiveness is hard to come by, try this exercise: for every bad memory you have, try to remember a good one. As soon as you realize the relationship wasn’t all bad, it is easier to heal and move on. Simply try to leave the past behind you and move on with your life. 3. Do not talk about the ex on dates When you do decide to start over and and get back in the dating game the number one rule is to never bring up your ex while on a date. If the person you are seeing asks about your ex, then by all means answer the questions, but keep it brief. Talking on and on about an ex can make it seem like you are not over them. And while we are on the subject of starting over, I have a simple word of advice that some people never take. If you cannot get over “the one that got away” find someone to talk with, whether it be a therapist or relationship coach. It does not make you a weaker person for seeking help. It makes you a stronger person for using all the means necessary to move on and be happy. In my opinion, it is even ok to to go out and have some hot rebound sex, if that is what it takes. I hope this helps everyone out there who is starting over and wondering if they will find happiness again. Just remember to heal for a few months, learn to forgive and then put it all behind you. If you believe that you deserve happiness, I know that you will find it. Charlie Maffei is a professional matchmaker for men and women from all walks of life. MONEY
Queremos que te sientas Bellísima...
Porque te lo mereces
Super saver How to make the most of your money
by Shaun R. Smith
D
o you call yourself a liberal or a conservative? Either way, everyone has been looking for ways to conserve their money during this recession. Whether you’ve got a little or a lot, this article covers four ways to make the most of what you have.
1. PAY YOURSELF FIRST If you spend every paycheck, you’ll never change your financial situation. And you’ll have to work your whole life. Plan ahead and get into the habit of saving. Your first priority financially should be to eliminate high interest debt (like credit cards). If you try to save money, but you’re paying 18% or more on your credit cards, chances are you’re falling further behind. Especially in today’s economic environment, it’s challenging to find investments that give you a high return. By paying off those high interest loans, you’ll basically be earning the 18%+ that those cards were charging you. Once you’ve gotten to the point where you’re able to save, educate yourself on your options. Some ideas include: u I nvesting in financial instruments like stocks and bonds, preferably through low-fee mutual funds. u I nvesting in real estate. u S tarting a business. u B uying a business or franchise. Go to seminars, speak with your banker, insurance broker, financial adviser, or other professional who can help you make the right decision, join an investment club, and talk to your financially savvy friends and relatives. The more you learn, the more opportunities will be open to you. 2. The little things add up How much do you spend on throw away purchases? That impulse purchase of a few candy bars in the check out line, the daily coffee ritual, grabbing lunch. While $5 and $10 here and there might not seem worth paying attention to, it adds up. I was coaching a friend on her spending. She and her husband make good money, but they’re always living hand to mouth. Once I dug into her financials, I discovered that they were pulling so much cash out of the bank for 42

those little expenses that it literally added up to almost $20,000 per year! That’s a good start to their kids’ college funds. 3. Figure out what’s important to you and put your money there After you’ve taken out a portion of your income to save and invest, maximize your fun dollars too. I use to buy books because this or that person or reviewer said it was a must read. But it wasn’t to my tastes. I ended up spending my leisure time and money reading something I didn’t enjoy! Which gets me to my last pointer. 4. Don’t worry about your neighbor. March to your own financial drum Peer pressure comes in all shapes and sizes, including what to do with your money. The neighbor got a new car, so you want one too. The latest cell phone was just released. The fall collection just hit the boutiques. Too many people live their lives ruled by “should.” I should buy this, I should have that, my kid’s friends all spend thousands on birthday parties and so should I. This way of thinking is an express path to dissatisfaction.

Figure out what you love and value, and spend your money there. I personally don’t care about fashion and labels, but I love my outdoor hobbies. So I spend my clothing budget to look professional in my work and just get basics for my non-work attire. Then I have extra money and feel great spending it on new climbing gear or stuff for my sail boat. With a little thought, planning and paying attention, you’ll be able to get the most from every dollar that comes your way. Shaun R. IT'S TIME FOR PEACE OF MIND

T
he rising elevator to the 12th Floor of IBM’s skyscraper just southwest of Central Park in New York can be seen as a visual metaphor of Maria Fernandez’s rise to success. She is a graduate of the prestigious Cornell Law School and currently serves as Senior Counsel of Technology and Licenses at IBM. Fernandez has worked as in-house legal council at IBM for more than two decades. Fernandez also specializes in Latin American legal issues, having worked abroad for more than seven years. Now, she continues to serve as an inspiration for Latinas striving to make to the top. MY Lifestyle Magazine President and CEO Elizabeth Ortiz met up with her to find out how she was able to graduate law school as a single mother, how she navigates the corporate world as a Latina and her tips for achieving the American dream. Elizabeth: Thank you for meeting with us today, Maria. To start off, what is your definition of success? Maria: Thank you, Elizabeth. Success for me is a couple of things. The first thing is my kids. I have three children ranging from the age of 25 to 4 1/2. So, I’m pretty busy. I became a lawyer because I wanted to help the community, but also when my daughter was born, it became a reason for continuing to give her a better background. In addition to being a role model for my children, I also participate in the community. I’m on several boards, like Latino Justice, the John Jay Pre-Law Institute. All of those, and being with IBM and the position that I’m in I can help influence things happening within those organizations. Elizabeth: Who is your role model? Maria: The role model for me - my parents. They, like many people behind me, who sort of brought us up to this level, came to this country to give me a better life. That meant washing dishes, being a mechanic. That meant doing everything they needed to do to put us through school. I tell you - it would have been easier for me to come home and tell them I was pregnant than to tell them I’m not going to college, because that was their expectation. Elizabeth: What are you doing now for your kids? Maria: For my children, I think it’s stressing education, reading. Both of my younger children happen to be in a school district where they are in bilingual programs. So, they spend one day in English and one day in Spanish. That to me is very important because of where we’re going. For them not to know Spanish, frankly, would be a shame. Plus, learning a language at an early age encourages learning. So, I push them every day. They don’t have a choice!
Elizabeth: What advice do you have for Latinas who want to become someone like you? Maria: Number one, I think that we have to stop believing that if you work really hard and do your best work, but don’t say anything and keep your head down, that that will automatically lead to success, because it does not. You need to toot your own horn. You need to let people know who you are, what you’re capable of doing. You need to let them know what your successes are and continue to take risks so they continue to see you as someone who not only does well, but is willing to reach out, try harder. The second thing is politics. Politics, anywhere you go, can be inherently difficult, particularly for women and being a Latina. You have to stand up for yourself, but also read the room. Understand what’s going to work for you in that environment and use that to your advantage. Figure out where you fit, show your value and I think people start to see you not only as a person who does good work, but also as someone who’s a leader. Elizabeth: What does being bicultural mean to you, especially in the corporate world? Maria: I think it adds flavor, no? I’ve worked both here and in Latin America. There, I was not Latin enough because I was an American. I would get, ‘you speak great, but your accent is American.’ Then, on this end, I went through phases. One, I was very quiet and did my work. And then I went through the super Latina phase where I was so Latina there was no way of knowing I wasn’t. Neither of the two worked. Being a Latina is an asset because I believe diversity is what adds to our country. Diversity is the future. Being bicultural means you have to figure out how to take that and translate that into value. I also see myself as an ambassador. Because every time I meet someone, whether I like it or not, I’m representing the Hispanic community. Elizabeth: When you look back at your journey, what are you most proud of? Maria: I think I’m most proud of having gone through law school as a single mom. My daughter was three when I went, so as you can imagine, it was very difficult. I had a lot of help from my parents. And there was a time when I thought, ‘I can’t do this. I’m sacrificing too much.’ And so, I thought about something. But it’s something that I always wanted to do and I was able to do it. I got through it. I say that’s my proudest moment, not because I think I’m so fantastic for having done it, it’s my proudest moment because I use it to tell people, ‘you can do anything.’

WILLIAMSBURG:
FUSHIMI
This culinary playground featuring cutting-edge Japanese fusion cuisine is open for business in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, bringing Manhattan sophistication and nightlife to the area
Take one look inside Fushimi in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg area and you know this isn’t your typical Japanese restaurant. From the moment you walk in, it feels like you’ve entered a place far from the streets of New York City. Designed with decor almost exclusively imported from Asia, Fushimi catches the eye as soon as you walk through the entrance of this 4,000-square foot restaurant. Look up, and right there above hang enormous custom chandeliers resembling a school of jellyfish with long, flowing tentacles. The room is as tall as an actual historic Fushimi shrine, like found in Japan. The nautical theme, designed by Douglas Horst of Horst Design International, also boasts a spectacular display of sake barrels on the eastern wall in homage to the restaurant’s wide selection of fine Nihonshu, Japanese resin stones cast in colored resin panels and LED lights transform the venue from day to night, as seen in the “Tunnel of Love” that leads to the restrooms area. “The tunnel and the DJ booth,” everyone goes crazy over that, explains Sunny Ng, general manager of Fushimi Williamsburg. The DJ booth sits high above the front entrance and lounge area. The restaurant puts on special events to make sure customers have a good time. Past events include body arts exhibitions and naked sushi parities. No matter what night of the week, it seems there is always something going on at Fushimi. “Everyone loves our Thursday night, ladies night,” says Ng. “Soon, we’ll have a happy hour coming up from Monday through Thursday. We have live entertainment here on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.” Dining is also a unique experience. Once seated in one of the intimate booths with Geisha murals as backdrops, the menu then becomes the main attraction. Created by Korean Executive Chef Chul Kee Ko, the cuisine features traditional Japanese fare with a twist, fusing French and Italian influences. “We have more than 15 kinds of hot and cold appetizers on our menu,” says Ng. “Most people, they love to order the small bites. The original menu is fixed, but the chef changes the special menu. Every two weeks, we have a special of the day from the kitchen.” Customers are raving about the green tea soba, the crab bisque, char grilled filet mignon with sautéed shitake mushrooms, as well as the skate fish and wild sea shrimp. Add all that to a large selection of sushi, sashimi and rolls, and you have a winning menu. People are coming from Long Island, Queens and beyond to enjoy the cuisine and nightlife. Fushimi Group’s restaurants have been popular with New Yorkers for years, starting with their other locations in Staten Island and the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. For the most part, the menu is the same at all locations, with some changes here in Williamsburg. Overall, this place is quickly becoming know for quality dining, with accommodations that are hard to find in Manhattan. “Here, it’s very convenient,” says Ng. “You don’t have to travel to Manhattan. You can park everywhere in this neighborhood. Let’s party! Fushimi loves to party . 46

B
eautiful sandy beaches, immaculate weather and friendly hospitality - Puerto Rico represents all that and more. Now, add culinary capital to the list. This magical island is drawing the attention of foodies and top chefs from all over the United States and the rest of the globe for its irresistible edgy cuisine. The MY Lifestyle Magazine team recently visited “La isla del Encanto” for the De Norte A Sur culinary festival in Ponce. Top chefs from New York joined emerging chefs from Puerto Rico for this culinary explosion. It’s an event that falls in line with the publication’s mission, as it’s a bicultural exchange between two places to celebrate similarities and the beauty of enjoying the best of both worlds. The setting couldn’t have been better. Ponce is known on the island as “the pearl of the south.” And for good reason - this picturesque location, about 90 minutes southwest of San Juan, is also known as the city of museums. It’s a destination where the lion is revered, as seen in the number of artsy statues depicting the wild animal in the city’s main square. But most importantly, Ponce is quickly becoming known for its budding culinary scene, from the trendy Lola Eclectic Cuisine in downtown to the pristine Vida Ventura Restaurant at Hacienda Luna de Luz in the mountains north of the city. This highly-anticipated festival kicked off with a mentoring session with young aspiring chefs at the Ponce Museum of Art, followed by three days of cooking demonstrations for the public at Ponce’s busy mall, Plaza del Caribe. The festival finale at La Bodega de Méndez, a wine-lovers destination featuring more than 1,300 different labels and 40,000 bottles of wine, was the ultimate ending to the festival. The celebration was all about “El Maridaje,” which translates in English to mean the marriage between food and wine. More than 20 restaurants from all over the island created flavorful and savory food creations that paired with a specific bottle of wine. All around, De Norte A Sur is sure to be one of the top annual events in Puerto Rico for years to come.

“Why I’m a vegan.”
Celebrity Journalist and Anchor Jane Velez-Mitchell’s exclusive guest column for MY Lifestyle Magazine on why more and more people are eating their veggies by Jane Velez-Mitchell
F
irst of all, what is a vegan? Well, as a vegan I eat all the many foods nature has to offer except those that come from animals. And, I’m doing just fine, thank you, without them. It’s simple really. I’m a vegan because it makes me happy. Being vegan is a selfish choice. It’s helped me with my health, my weight and my spirit! First, an admission. I’ve always struggled with my weight and food choices. Can you relate? Two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. I didn’t want to be that, so I went vegan. Want to get rid of that extra fat? Just say no to meat and dairy. A good chunk of the excess calories Americans consume are from those groups. It’s that simple. You will find yourself naturally gravitating towards fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. And, you’ll begin to enjoy them and discover your calorie intake dropping naturally, without even trying! Cardiovascular disease is one of the top killers of Americans. Simply put, it’s when your arteries get clogged with fat and cholesterol. Guess what? There’s no cholesterol in plants. None! If you’ve got high-cholesterol, switch out the meat and dairy, and bring in fruits and vegetables. Now, about the spirit part. I like to think of myself as a good person. What’s happening to billions of cows, pigs and chickens on factory farms doesn’t match up with what I consider kind, civilized behavior. Don’t take my word for it. Check out the Humane Society of the United States’ website (www.hsus.org). Here’s the fun part. Going vegan is a wonderful adventure because you get to go out and explore all sorts of different foods. Fabulous vegan choices can be found in Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Indian, Middle Eastern and, yes, Latin cuisine. Arroz con habichuelas, platanos

and yucca are just a few examples of delicious vegan choices in Latin food. Also, the website happycow.net has a massive list of vegan restaurants around the country. There’s also the fun of whipping up vegan cuisine at home. Sure, I love carrots, broccoli, potatoes and corn. But going vegan means also discovering the delights of kale, eggplant, squash, sweet potato, swiss chard, beets, artichokes, bok choy, asparagus, zucchini, turnips, cabbage, fennel, avocado, chick peas, string beans, bell pepper - and the list goes on. Let’s talk fabulous grains. When was the last time you tried kasha? It’s a nutritious, delicious grain that very few Americans get the chance to savor. Go vegan and you will find yourself weaving through the aisles of your local health food store discovering obscure, mouth-watering grains. You’ll find yourself making quinoa pasta instead of the regular starchy kind and realizing that, ‘Hey, I’m getting a good dollop of a complete protein in the process.’ The myth that vegan food is somehow tasteless is simply that - a myth. For those whose taste buds have been numbed by sugar, salt and fat-laden fast food, let me suggest eliminating fast food entirely as part of the transition to healthy, compassionate eating. After a brief period of withdrawal from these addictive ingredients, your taste buds will return to their natural state and you will begin to appreciate the more subtle tastes of fruits and veggies. Give it a try. What do you have to lose? Just weight and cholesterol! What might you gain? A whole new way of living that will rocket you into a new dimension of well-being, health and serenity. Going vegan is like discovering a portal to a world where nutrition and taste live in perfect harmony.
f you ask the average person what their typical diet consists of, you will find that the common theme is usually bread, meat and, if youʼre lucky, a handful of iceberg lettuce. Yet, time and time again, studies show that leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are the best foods to ward off disease like cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. A vegan diet consists of precisely these foods. Plant foods are extremely rich in fiber, compared to animal foods that possess zero fiber, which supports weight loss, heart health, detoxification and healthy digestion. The proven number one cancer fighting foods are cruciferous vegetables (ex. leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts) and allium vegetables (ex. onions, garlic, scallions, leeks). Thanks to their high antioxidant content, plant foods also provide potent anti-aging effects. Most vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories, and none have cholesterol. Plant foods are jammed packed with health-promoting vitamins and minerals that are sparse in animal foods. When you fuel your body with healthy nutrients, rather than filling up on empty calories, not only will you be satiated longer, but your sugar and junk food cravings will be reduced. In addition, since plant foods are less taxing on the digestive system, you will experience increased energy simply by reducing your intake of animal foods and eating more vegetables. With all these benefits, why not give a vegan diet a try? When transitioning, the greatest challenge is usually knowing what to eat. Fortunately for those new to eating plant foods, there are many delicious recipes available to help you ease the transition. One of my favorite ways to sneak in some veggies is by drinking a Green Smoothie every day. It makes a perfect breakfast on-the-go, or a satisfying mid-day snack. Green Smoothie: - 1 banana - handful of spinach - 1/2 cup blueberries - non-dairy milk and/or water - a few ice cubes Place all ingredients in blender and mix until smooth. Add water or nondairy milk to achieve desired consistency. You can add other fruits and greens to change it up; be creative! Hummus - 1 16 oz can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans - 1/4 cup liquid from can of chickpeas - 3-5 tablespoons lemon juice - 1 1/2 tablespoons tahini - 2 cloves garlic, crushed - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 2 tablespoons olive oil Drain chickpeas and set aside liquid from can. Combine remaining ingredients in blender or food processor. Add 1/4 cup of liquid from chickpeas. Blend for 3-5 minutes on low until thoroughly mixed and smooth. For added health points, dip celery, carrots, cucumbers and other crudites in the spread. HOT LATINO VEGANS: NOEL POLANCO Model and Fitness Trainer “I was raised in a society where obesity and diabetes rates keep growing, and kids are being fed junk food from a young age. I went through that but I am happy and glad to have been awakened. I look at my family and see almost all are overweight or being affected by diseases. I tell myself this only proves to me that the vegan diet is the way we are designed to eat. If meat is so healthy, why do they keep getting sick? Why do they workout and can’t lose weight? We suffer and then we die. So I follow a vegan diet to perform at my highest level at all times. I am a man on a mission. I show people that you can still build muscles on a vegan diet. You can still stay strong and you can become healthier. It is one thing looking good from the outside and being unhealthy on the inside. That doesn’t work for me. I don’t want that. I want to be both healthy on the inside and on the outside.”

HOW TO BE FIT FOR THE FALL AND NOT FIT FOR A FALL As the crisp Fall air fills the city, some of us can rejoice that we made it through another season of less clothing. Woo-hoo! Ok, enough celebrating. Now, the next challenge is upon us. Do we fall down the slippery slope of wearing only baggy clothes, concealing jackets and sweaters, or do we take the opportunity to get a head start on next summer? I strongly suggest the latter. by Celebrity Trainer Luis Pertuz
B
elieve it or not, the Fall is the perfect time of year to either start or reinvigorate your workout routine. The summer time pressure is off and you’re positioning yourself very advantageously before the eating season begins at the end of November. Besides, why wait until January? It’s just another month. For most of us, January is an even colder month, and like most machines, especially the organic kinds, starting in the cold is a lot tougher. Fall is absolutely my favorite season for the simple fact that it holds so much variety. With relation to exercise, it gives you the option to workout both indoors and outdoors. Let’s start with some indoor routines:
INDOORS:
1. Squat to shoulder press:
Take a chair and brace it up against the wall. Sit in the chair while holding a one gallon jug in each hand (I’m a big fan of apple cider for this exercise). Do a bicep curl while sitting, holding the jugs at the top of the motion. While holding them in this position, stand up and lift the jugs above your head. Reverse the entire pattern and repeat for one minute.
2. Push-up position hold:
Immediately after doing your minute of the previous exercise, drop to the ground and hold yourself in the push-up position for one minute.
OUTDOORS:
1. Leaf piles:
This is a fun one that requires leaves. Actually, a lot of leaves. Try it in a park, or if you have a yard, that will suffice. Stand with your legs side by side. Extend your left leg and so that it skims the surface and drags leaves with you as you step to the right. Do this 20 times and you should have accumulated a nice pile of leaves. Do the same in the opposite direction. Repeat the process three times in each direction. Now you’ve set up a nice distance between piles.
Photography by: Eduardo Silva silvaeduardoe@gmail.com
2. Run-arounds:
Hair, Makeup and Styling by: Jackson Simmonds jsimmonds14@gmail.com
Sprint in between the pile of leaves for four rotations. Running from one pile and returning the one you started is considered one rotation. These exercises are perfect to jump start your Fall routine, setting yourself on a course to have a productive and active winter, and ready to show off your results next summer.

NEW TRAVEL YORK
OUR NEW JOURNEYS TOWN YORK
Jordan Ancient sites and modern paths Article and Photography by Kristal Yee
Are you sure you want to go? Is it really safe? Those are the questions that constantly raced through my head after I booked a trip with friends to visit the Middle East, hitting Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt. At the time, Two Americans had just been abducted in Egypt, tensions were mounting in Syria, U.S. soldiers were accused of burning the Koran in Afghanistan and U.S. NGO workers were about to be put on trial in Cairo. Long story short, it didn’t seem like the most ideal time to travel - but was I wrong about that. With top-rate hospitality, friendly locals and great cultural sites, Jordan was just what we needed.
Kristal Yee is a finance analyst by day and explorer by night, whose love of travel and curiosity of other cultures started as a child and keeps building with each new adventure. Her travel philosophy is simple – being open to new cultures, people, and experiences, while maintaining an easy going attitude and friendly smile will keep it fun and get you far. Kristal resides in New York City, one short plane ride away from just about any travel destination in the world. 54

TRAVEL
JOURNEYS
My group included a worldly, well-experienced traveler, a blonde, natural flirt who brings fun and laughter everywhere she goes, and I, a girl who craves adventure and new experiences. Three independent, strong and obviously American women were heading into an area that seemed not so friendly toward the U.S. at the moment. We arrived in Amman, weary from our 11-hour flight, but excited and happy to start our adventure. And to our surprise, we are kindly welcomed by the friendly locals. Jordan can be a land of contrasting realities. Driving through Amman, we came across pockets of extreme wealth juxtaposed against total poverty. Then, as our car was inspected for bombs after arriving at our hotel, a natural occurrence in Jordan, it began to hail. Who expects hail in the desert? Apparently, it only happens once every three years. Lucky us! One of the most notable parts of visiting Jordan was our road trip through the country with our friendly driver, Mohammed. Here are some notable stops along the way to check out: Mdeba - St George Church, with the largest mosaic map of Palestine. Mt. Nebo - Site where Moses saw the promised lands. Dead Sea - Lowest point on earth, with floatable salt waters and age reducing mud masks. Finally, just as the sun set, we arrived at the world-renowned site of Petra, afterwhich we headed straight to one of the abundant Turkish spas in the area, an operation that caters to the daily influx of tourists. The next morning, we wound our way through the ancient city, following the same route ancient caravans took more than 2,000 years ago, imagining what it must have been like riding camels loaded with spices between mile high cliffs. Then, with the obligatory Indiana Jones music drumming in our heads, we turned a corner and spotted the infamous Treasury, a site that caused an extreme sensation of awe for us all. We later continued our journey through the massive Petra site, admiring all the intricate wall carvings, beautiful rock striations and an elaborately-detailed tomb area along the hike to the nearby monastery. To cap off the glorious day, we head to town for a delicious mezze dinner, which is a traditional spread of various appetizers, some shisha (hookah), local dancing and somehow, we ended the perfect evening drinking inside an ancient tomb. On our last day, we traveled the Wadi Rum Desert, escorted by our personal Bedouin guide. The contrast between the red and yellow sands was strikingly beautiful, especially as we carefully navigated up and down sand dunes sipping tea in a Bedouin camp. Our final stop in this great country was down in the port city of Aqbar, where we boarded a boat for a ride in the heavily-patrolled Red Sea, bordered by Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan. We enjoyed a great fish lunch and authentic Jordanian coffee made by a local spice shop owner, once again displaying the generous hospitality of the Jordanian people. As our trip came to a close and we made our way back to Amman, en route to the neighboring country of Lebanon, we developed fond memories of the Jordanian people, their cuisine, a new appreciation for their way of life and fun adventures along the way.

Nick Mathews: The new class act He has it all - the looks, talent, humility and passion for acting. It’s very likely America will be seeing a lot more of this emerging actor by Carlos Mayorga
Photography by: Eduardo Silva silvaeduardoe@gmail.com Hair, Makeup and Styling by: Jackson Simmonds jsimmonds14@gmail.com
“I know this is my destiny and I’m not going to stop,” ... “It’s not a matter if it’s going to happen, it’s a matter of when.”
O
n an early fall afternoon, Nick Mathews looks toward the Hudson River, his gaze locked as he sips a hot cup of coffee. It was on the other side of the river, years ago as a child growing up in New Jersey, where his dreams of becoming an actor began. “I did a high school musical called ‘Leader of the Pack,’” recalls Mathews, thinking back on the time he developed his passion. Then, the laughter. “Someone videotaped it. It was horrible, but I had a blast doing it,” he continues, still chuckling. “I had so much fun. And the adrenaline that happens in your body, on a live stage, is very exciting.” Years later, sitting inside the charming Café Gitane on Jane Street at the edge of Greenwich Village, Mathews recalls the past and present, while holding out hope for future stardom. Now a resident of Harlem, and the son of an Italian-American father and his mom a German/Austrian mix, this playful actor has always exposed himself to other cultures, particularly Latinos. “Actually, many of my friends are Latin American,” he says. “My best friend is a promoter for Latin/Hip-Hop/Reggaeton parties and I enjoy myself very much in that atmosphere. I love the music and love to dance. I’ve learned salsa, merengue and bachata.” Perhaps he’s using that Latin passion on camera. Mathews is coming off a steamy guest appearance on the hot new show “Political Animals” on the USA network, in which he played the seductive Levi Sims, who ends up having a romance with the U.S. president’s gay son. That role gave Mathews more mainstream exposure than ever before, but also took him out of his comfort zone - a feeling that surprisingly, he embraces. “I actually feel like it’s easier playing something outside of yourself than playing something that is yourself,” he admits. “Sometimes, when something is so close to home, you don’t know where the line is.” This handsome actor has also appeared on the longstanding day60

time soap opera “As the World Turns” and in a television web series called “In Between Men,” about a group of gay men who don’t know where they fit in the world. He began filming the second season of that popular show in October. Like many actors, Mathews wants to make sure he isn’t typecast into always playing one specific type of character. As for specific roles in which he feels he is best at, this talented actor says it’s all over the board. “I don’t want to be boxed into anything, but the things I feel like I have a natural aptitude for are roles where I can play a bad guy who has a good heart or a good person in a bad situation, where there’s a reasonable justification as to why they have to do something that’s not necessarily the right thing, but they’re doing it for the greater good,” he responds. Like many up-and-coming actors, Mathews currently has a job that pays the bills while he searches for that dream role. In his case, he works in marketing at American Express, auditioning and acting during the time he’s not there. Acting is a tough profession, filled with rejection and fierce competition. When asked whether he’s ever been tempted to quit, he nods. “Two particular times,” he admits. “I thought, ‘This is not for me.’ I didn’t stop acting, because I did plays, but I stopped the business side of it. So, I didn’t have an agent, didn’t have a manager and I didn’t care.” Just as he finishes up his cup of coffee, Mathews says he’s rebounded from that. Although discouraged for a time, he has since regained his ambition and passion to immerse himself in all the aspects of being an actor. Before paying the check and returning to his day job, he assures his fans that his next role will be the big one he’s been waiting for. “I know this is my destiny and I’m not going to stop,” says Mathews. “It’s not a matter if it’s going to happen, it’s a matter of when. Now that I know it’s a time issue, I’ve got to just stick with it.”

The expo was hosted by Emiliani Enterprises, the leading beauty product distributors and educational experts in the world. The revolutionary event commenced on Oct. 20, 2012 with a red carpet opening night gala dedicated to Vidal Sassoon’s legacy. World-renowned stylists, celebrities and the beauty industry elite came together to honor the late icon and celebrate his unforgettable contribution to the beauty and fashion industries. The tribute was hosted by Sharie Manon and included inspirational speeches from Vidal’s son Elan Sassoon; world renowned hairdresser Tim Hartley and famous hairstylist Ted Gibson. The show’s producer and VP of Emiliani Enterprises Andre Chiavelli, along with the Emiliani Family and So Cap, presented Elan Sassoon with a check for The Vidal Sassoon Professional Beauty Education Scholarship program. In a heartfelt celebration, Vidal Sassoon’s iconic looks were showcased in a runway show finale, featuring Emiliani Beauty Expo’s main stage artists Tim Hartley, Damien Carney, Fernando Romero, Patrick McIvor, Scott Cole, Linda Yodice, Noogie Thai, Jennifer Sparveri, Daniel Roldan, Ammon Carver, Boyd Parris, Tina Crenshaw, Raul Da Luz, Leanne Shade, Lenny Strand, Faye Judson, Lonn Bogart Jr, Ian Browning, Anna Cantu, Leonel Rodriquez and Rocky Vitelli. In a surprising show finale, hair artist Phillip Wilson, fashion designer Elisa Jimenez from the hit television show Project Runway and global makeup expert Laura Dee Shelly performed a demonstration by creating a “runway ready” look in front of a live audience, something never done before. The rest of the night consisted of a cocktail hour, meet and greet with the artists, red carpet interviews and a preview of the show floor. Fashion artists, stylists and students swarmed the expo center as October 21st opened up the groundbreaking, two-day essential tradeshow event. The tradeshow floor was packed with the industry’s most innovative new and existing product displays from top brands including Essie, OPI, Elchim, Chi, Sexy Hair, So Cap, Ri Ci and many more. The beauty expo consisted of 10 hands-on classes, 20 “Look & Learn” seminars, and 15 Main Stage Presentations from leading artists in the beauty and fashion industry,
