Mr. Martial Arts

Jermaine Russell

W

BY CARLOS MAYORGA

hen this man walks in the room, you see muscle and sense his charm. Jermaine Russell also has the brains, sexy looks and athletic talent to excel at whatever he sets his mind to. Jermaine is a Mayahana Buddhist practitioner and biologist. For a guy who also practices Muay Thai kickboxing, he surprisingly is known for his cool and relaxing demeanor. But he can unleash his wild side, as he did during his photo shoot on a yacht on the Hudson River. “My passion is fueled by how I can expand my life,” he says. “The potential to extend beyond barriers, whether its socially, politically or in education. Limits starts with us. I’m doing my part to break them.” For the past decade, Jermaine has dedicated his life to working in the health and wellness field in a addition to his focus to the martial arts. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., he’s now fulfilling his mission of helping people unify their body, mind and spirit as an osteopathic neuroscience physician through his new business called ThreeWayBalance. Much of his strength comes from his spirituality and his exposure to people from many cultures. “As I do practice Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism with the lay Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai International, I encounter many different nationalities,” Jermaine says. “I have been taught Spanish and Japanese. Seeking to embrace the uniqueness of each culture allows us to bridge the gaps that society naturally tries to divide.” Photo by: Michael Levy www.michaellevyphoto.com Hair and Makeup by: Erin Chaney chaney.erin@gmail.com Location: Hornblower Infinity www.hornblower.com

Mr. Rugby

Alessio Mereghetti

H

BY CARLOS MAYORGA

e has the body that rivals any underwear model in the business, but Alessio Mereghetti is not just know for being good in front of the camera. This Italian competed in the competitive world of professional rugby for five years with teams in Italy, France and New Zealand. He played until last year after completing his education at Milan University and decided to move to New York to find new adventures. After all, Alessio’s favorite saying is “luck is when preparation meets an opportunity.” Women love his long, wavy hair and his athleticism. He skis, swims, boxes, plays volleyball and basketball. But he has a sensitive side. Alessio likes to read, sing and go to the theater. He’s reinvented himself as a personal trainer and helps condition athletes in the NBA. So what’s next? “My biggest dream right now is to play for a pro football team in America,” he admits. “I’ve had contact from New York’s semi-pro team, so maybe that will happen. I’d like open a gym in America with my father. He is a boxing teacher in Italy. My energy and training matched with his professional experience can be a winning mix.”

One of Alessio’s favorite things about living in this country so far is the diversity of the people. He’s interacted with many cultures, and feels close to Latinos. “I admire people who are positive and warm to the next person,” Alessio says. “Like Latinos, we value our traditions. Even though we are far from home, we are very close to our family. It is still our benchmark. We believe in family and friendship.”

Mr. International Model

Juan Benson

BY CARLOS MAYORGA

e is known for his supermodel looks and being the smooth guy that all the ladies want to know. Juan Benson has been modeling professionally since his days at the University of Puerto Rico and starred in theater productions like “West Side Story.” Then, his big shot. He was recruited by a New York agency to come to the Big Apple to model. Now, he has no limitations. Juan works as a graphic designer, artist, actor, model, bartender, promoter and has ambitions for real estate and producing. “Use all your talents and learn new ones,” he says about being multifaceted. “I don’t believe in conforming myself with a 9-to-5 and leaving my talent aside. I believe in the crazy awesome feeling that one gets when receiving a fat check for doing something that came from talent and passion.” After all, Juan’s life philosophy comes from a quote from Mark Twain: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Mr. Pro Athlete Alvin Bowen

BY CARLOS MAYORGA

e’s a hard-hitting, take no prisoners athlete who has always competed hard and given his all. His name is Alvin Bowen. Born in Newark, N.J., he’s always had a thing for New York. Alvin has played linebacker for a number of NFL teams over his career, including the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins, as well as the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Calgary Stampede. He has earned the nickname “Ace” for always getting the job done. He’s been modeling since 2010 and hopes to expand that area of his career. As for Alvin’s view on life, he says that he strives to be a role model. “I describe myself as trying to bring that old school man back,” he says. “Not necessarily taking care of everything, but doing my job as a man. Whether it be supplying what I need for my family or just showing a younger generation kid that there is a way out of whatever situation you’re in and there always can be a positive road for you.” For now, he’s enjoying life as it comes and loving the ride. When asked about the Latin influences in his life, Alvin points to his Caribbean roots. “I have some Latino friends,” he admits. “My parents are Jamaican, so we share some of the same foods. They call it platanos, we call them plantains. They’ve got some other things like rice and beans. We do that as well.”

Mr. Compassion

Hudson Taylor

B

eing a tough and competitive athlete doesn’t mean that you can’t show compassion. Hudson Taylor has the boyish good looks and a heart of gold to match. He works as assistant wrestling coach at Columbia University and is a three time All American wrestler from the University of Maryland. He is perhaps most widely known as the founder and executive director of Athlete Ally, a non-profit dedicated to educating and empowering straight athletes in sports to speak out against homophobia and transphobia. The organization has inspired people from all over the world. “What gives me passion is leaving a legacy of service by knowing that I was able to change somebody’s life or make a difference,”

BY CARLOS MAYORGA Hudson says. “My biggest dream is to make a meaningful contribution toward ending homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism in sports at every level.” Hudson has made New York his home and loves the diversity and pace of the city that never sleeps. He says his biggest character strengths are the ability to find common ground with everyone, being optimistic and finding the good in people. His biggest flaw? Trying too hard to please others. He’s inspired by the words of Latino Activist Cesar Chavez, who said, “Once social change begins it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.”

MY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE JOINS THE CAUSE

Standing

in truth Your favorite celebrities are going naked for a cause. MY Lifestyle Magazine spoke exclusively with the daytime talk show queen Wendy Williams and Latina Actress Patricia de León about why they are taking off their clothes for PETA.

B

BY CARLOS ANAYA

lack, white, Latino - celebrities from many backgrounds are uniting to bring attention to the issue of animal cruelty and they are doing it in a very bold and edgy way - by taking off their high heels, designer handbags and clothing.

Among them, one of the biggest and admired media personalities on the planet - Wendy Williams is known for speaking her mind and not holding back. She’s interviewed every celebrity under the sun as a longtime radio talk show host and is one of only a select number of women inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. But starting in 2009, her fame skyrocketed with her daytime syndicated talk show “The Wendy Williams Show” that now airs in 52 countries. She was also a viewer favorite on the hit television show “Dancing with the Stars” in 2011. “I never thought I would get this big,” Williams admits. “I was very big in radio. I made a comfortable income, I certainly was a trailblazer in radio and it was really what I wanted to do. I was perfectly happy on the radio. Then this TV show came along and I couldn’t have dreamt this better.” At 48, Williams is comfortable in her own skin. That’s probably why, when approached by PETA to get naked for their “I’d rather do naked than to wear fur” campaign, she was all in. “I was a very longtime fur wearer,” Williams says. “I just elected to become more enlightened regarding how furs are made, and yes I still wear leather and I still wear suede, and I still eat meat including pork and beef, but when it comes to wearing that big, gigantic mink coat, there are some things that are part of my past life and that would be one of them.” Williams is showing that even though some people haven’t taken a vow to veganism, you can still support PETA. “The organization is very understanding,” Willams says. “There are baby steps, then there are large, over the top overtures in terms of protecting animals. I’m, I guess, am more of a baby steps person. But I do have the compassion for the cause.” Part of those steps means she has dedicated a day, every Wednesday, to not eating meat. Other celebrities have taken it a step further by going vegetarian or vegan. Such is the case with Latina Actress Patricia de León, who has starred in television shows like Lincoln Heights on ABC Family, Cold Case on CBS and more recently, Magic City on Starz.

16

N

ot only has de León become a vegetarian, she is on a mission to inform Latinos about animal cruelty and the top health concerns that they face like heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. Vegetarianism, she says, helps to greatly reduce the risk of developing these life-threatening conditions. It is for those reasons that like Williams, de León also posed nude for PETA and MY Lifestyle Magazine got that racy ad before it is released to any other media outlet or put on a billboard.

DANIELLA ALONSO for

“I do believe that God give us a reason to be here,” says de León on why she posed. “I cannot speak for other celebrities or people that make it in this industry, but I do believe that it’s a responsibility for us to set an example for our kids, the younger people coming up, to try to do the right thing.” And although other Latino celebrities may not be removing their clothes as well, dozens have joined the campaign to stop animal cruelty, including Actress Eva Mendes, Roselyn Sanchez, Marlen Esparza, Christian Serratos, Pablo Azar, Dave Navarro, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Kate del Castillo, Constance Marie and more.

Hispanics supporting PETA has grown so much that the organization has launched PETA Latino to specifically reach more. In the six months that PETA Latino has been on Facebook, it already has more than 20,000 fans. And it’s not just U.S. Latinos taking note - Mexico City is the top place for PETA fans, followed by Los Angeles at #2, Santiago, Chile at #7 and Lima, Peru at #8.

PLEATHER YOURSELF REVOLUTIONIZE YOUR WARDROBE: SPARE COWS AND EXOTIC ANIMALS A MISERABLE LIFE AND AN AGONIZING DEATH BY CHOOSING FAKE, FOR THEIR SAKE.

“Latinos are influencing American culture in so many ways, proudly making themselves heard in the realms of politics, entertainment, sports, and more,” says Renée Saldaña, PETA Latino Outreach Coordinator. “Last December we introduced the new PETALatino.com,” she continues, “a completely bilingual website that offers content in Spanish and English, including articles, vegan recipes inspired by traditional favorites from all over Latin America, tips for healthy living, information on caring for companion animals, interviews and testimonials from our favorite celebrities and entertainers, and much more.” Whether it is Wendy Williams, Patricia de León or any other celebrity lending a hand, PETA’s campaign with the top stars is getting a lot of attention. For de León, that means satisfaction with the impact her voice is having on the world. “It’s important for us to leave something,” de León says. “Something that people say, ‘You know what? She was this way or she really fought for this cause.’ Otherwise we’re just one more who passed through here and there was nothing left.”

Celebrity fitness with Busta Rhymes The legendary rapper and his trainer sit down with MY Lifestyle Magazine for an intimate discussion on being fit in all areas of life

W

By Carlos Mayorga ith 11 Grammy nominations and nine solo albums, he’s conquered the music world and will be known as one of the best hip hop artists of all time. But now, Busta Rhymes is trying to master his own body, sculpting not only his muscles, but also how he approaches life.

On a late winter day, Busta invited MY Lifestyle Magazine to Complete Body and Spa in New York City, where he works out, to view this transformation up close. When we arrived that afternoon, Busta began showing us just how strict his diet can be when he’s training. Going through a bag of containers, he goes down the list of what’s inside. “Bison meat, turkey meat,” he begins before he’s interrupted by Munoz. “I got a present for you.” “Oh word?” Busta responds as his face comes to life with curiosity. Then he sees the sauce. “I’ve been begging for this barbeque sauce since the first day,” yells Busta. “I come in with my food dry. One day he came in here and he gave me a taste of bison meat. It had the sauce on it and it made me enjoy it even more.” Munoz has trained Busta to look at food as fuel and because highly nutritional choices don’t always taste good, a condiment like barbeque sauce can make a big difference. This superstar has adjusted his diet and is accustomed to eating better, but he still gets tempted. “At four of five o’clock in the morning, I could be looking at the most amazing sandwich,” Busta says. “I’ll call (Munoz), ‘Sir, right now I’m looking at an egg sandwich with cheese. I’m dying to eat it. Can I get a pass tonight?’ He’ll say no. And if it’s no, it’s no.” On a rare occasion, Munoz may budge and give Busta permission for something like a slice of pizza or another treat. He understands that the life of an entertainer is difficult, with high stress, long days and odd hours. “I don’t force a person to change their lifestyle,” says Munoz. “How can I change a guy whose livelihood is to be promoting his music at nighttime in clubs? In clubs, a lot of people are drinking; a lot of people are eating bad food afterward.”

18

I

f you want to start a discussion about who are the best hip hop artists of all time, Busta Rhymes has to be in the mix. His fans know him for his wild and fast lyrical delivery with such hits like “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check, “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See,” as a featured guest on the songs “Don’t Cha” by the female group The Pussycat Dolls and more recently, “Look At Me Now” with Chris Brown and Lil Wayne. Music aside, Busta is still climbing to the top in his personal life, especially when it comes to being fit and healthy. That’s where Munoz comes in. With more than three decades of experience, this trainer has helped other celebrities achieve their fitness goals, including Diana Ross. “I felt like he should be called ‘General’ because when I met him I just saw this leadership quality,” says Busta. “Nobody back talks. There’s a discipline that he implements in his whole team.” Ask anyone else and they will tell you the same thing - Munoz demands respect from all his clients - from someone who is just starting out up to the toughest bodybuilder. As for his bond with Busta, the rapper says their friendship has grown from a business relationship into something better. Sometimes he looks to Munoz for advice on issues that have nothing to do with nutrition or training. “I used to be a little reckless because I’m emotional and I wear my emotions on my sleeve,” admits Busta. “This experience has helped me to take a second. Inhale. Exhale. Maintain your abilities to display calmness, tranquility and focus. Because actually, that is where the strength is at.” And that strength is helping this iconic rapper and entertainer in all areas of his life. He’s fit, happier and more fulfilled. These are life lessons that Busta is taking to heart. “Even in the street, you can apply this,” Busta says. “That discipline of knowing how to control that energy could turn a hostile situation - that’s on the brink of becoming irreversible and bring it down to a place where it’s neutralized and dead completely.”

Celebrity beauty and style secrets revealed

Y

By Stephen Marinaro “TheSalonGuy” ou see celebrities in movies, on television, in magazines and on the web. Have you ever asked yourself, “How important is their own style to them?” I’ve interviewed some of Hollywood’s heavy hitters to ask them that very question.

To put this in perspective, you would be surprised how many actors and male models prefer to wear a T-shirt and jeans rather than a suit or be ready for a red carpet event every day. It’s refreshing to hear that they feel just as comfortable in casual clothing. I always thought they celebrities needed to be dressed up 24-7. Here’s what some celebrities told me first hand about personal style: Actor Jack Huston, from Boardwalk Empire and Twilight: “I am the same T-shirt and jeans everyday kinda guy, but I have a massive collection of boots.” Actor Tom Jane of HBO’s “Hung”: “I like to wear something dark so when I spill something on it, it’s hard to see. I also like a good suit.” When I asked supermodel and America’s Next Top Model Judge Rob Evans about his personal style, he said in his charming British accent, “I like to keep on top of it, but my style is kinda smart/ casual. If you’re wearing a trainer, then top it off with some jeans and trainers.” Celebrities seem to have the same daily malfunctions with their beauty, as we all do, and they look to their style teams for help.

20

I spoke to Singer Mya and her hairstylist, Troy Turner, about how important hair is to them. “Everything is important to a woman,” says Mya, laughing innocently. Troy told me he feels it’s a blessing to get to work on so many celebrities and he understands just how important their hair and individual beauty is to them. Jenna Dewan-Tatum of “American Horror Story” is the wife of the “Sexiest Man Alive,” Channing Tatum. She says that whenever she would try styling her hair by herself, she could never get it to look as good as the models we see at Fashion Week, but she was happy with her own version of the hairstyle she created. Throughout my interviews, I also found a common theme among other celebrities like Kristin Cavallari, Adrienne Bailon, Daisy Fuentes, Vanessa Hudgens and many more. All told me they like simple, soft easy to do styles and don’t like to feel too overdone. So, what’s more important? Hair or makeup? Some celebrities put more emphasis on makeup, others on hair, but many say the whole look is equally important. They all seem to need a hairstylist, makeup artist and fashion stylist to keep them looking fabulous for the red carpet, but they also love to stay casual whenever they can find the opportunity. Sometimes these celebrities do not look human because their skin, hair, teeth and features are almost perfect. But it’s refreshing to hear that they have a casual side just like everyone else.

How to get the MY Lifestyle Men look

BY JACKSON SIMMONDS

oday’s man of the world operates on a different frequency than he used to. It’s 2013 and he pays close attention to his appearance grooming, and hygiene. He knows that these things are the modern-day equivalent of a suit of armour. If he is to succeed in business, love and life in general, these details must be attended to constantly and without fail. These are the products he turns to to help him.

For longer hair, Restore can return hair to it’s virgin state. It is the ultimate anti-aging hair treatment. For all you silver foxes out there, imagine how nice it would be to have soft and shiny hair again (your significant other will appreciate this!). Hey ladies... BY CHARLIE THE the MATCHMAKER By Charlie Matchmaker By Charlie the Matchmaker

Here’ s where to find a man in New York City

J

ust about every single woman I meet always asks me the same question: “Where do I find single men?” Whether you live in New York City or anywhere in the world, my immediate response is “Get out there!”

Please allow me to elaborate by asking you the same question I ask all of my single ladies. “Where did you go in the last week to meet eligible men?” Sit down and take a moment to make a list of all the places you went in the last week. I recently had one of my new clients do this very task and this is what she came up with. In the last seven days she had gone to work five days and yoga class twice. She got her nails done and the highlight of her week was buying a new pair of shoes. Once she made her list, I asked her to take a closer look. This client had gone to work at an office filled with approximately 60 percent married men, 39 percent women, two gay men and a lesbian. Her yoga class did not allow her to meet any eligible men either as her class consisted of all women. And when asked how many men were in her nail salon and shoe store, she woefully admitted there were none. If you do this exercise and come up with the same results, I have the answer to your problem. Listen closely: if you are not putting yourself in an environment where there are single men, you simply are not going to meet one! Here in New York City, where there are so many eligible men, single women can no longer use the excuse that they cannot find any. They simply have to switch their habits and go where these bachelors hang out. If you are seriously looking for a man, you must visualize. Put yourself into the shoes of an eligible man and walk to where those shoes take him.

24

Here are some examples of what I am talking about: 1. Sports Bars

Yes ladies, you may not like sports, but guess what? Eligible, single men do! And here in New York City, you can find everything from dive bars filled with average Joes, to exclusive joints such as Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club, where the more refined single sports fans hang out.

2. Gym

Where do you find most eligible guys? In a gym! I know that many women loathe talking to guys in gyms because they think that most men are only there to prowl. Here’s an idea - why don’t you go on your own prowl? I’m not saying to hit on that muscle bound gym guy. I’m talking about the good looking stud who gets on the treadmill every day to get his daily cardio. And when you sign up for that yoga or spin class, ask someone who works at the gym what the female to male ratio is in the class.

3. Break the Cycle

Many single ladies simply fall into a rut of doing the same things day in and day out. One of the easiest ways to meet new people is to break out of your everyday routine. This can be done as easily as taking your lunch breaks at different times every day and trying new places. Also, instead of going home alone after work, why not ask your friends out to happy hour at least once a week? Trying these tips can jump start your quest to meeting the eligible guys you are seeking. You simply have to put yourself into new situations instead of sitting around asking yourself “Where are all of the eligible guys?” And I hate to give you some tough love right now ladies, but you cannot sit at home alone in your pajamas plunking away on Facebook. You must find ways of getting out there to find Mr. Right. He is not going to be the guy that delivers your pizza!

Dating with two left feet Mistakes to avoid on a date

Y

By Michael Vincent Greisler

ou’re going out on a date. After some emails, text messages and perhaps a phone call, you are meeting for the first time to determine whether this person is someone you could spend your life with, or if it’s just a one night stand.

You’ve dropped the “rotation,” friends with benefits or any other distraction from discovering your life partner, husband or wife. The one that makes you tighten inside. It’s no longer your job to make him or her like you. It’s your job not to mess it up. Here are some basic rules that apply to both men and women to avoid a dating disaster.

1

Body language is everything It’s a complete turnoff to speak to someone whose eyes are darting around the room. If your arms are crossed, sit up straight, smile and lean in closer. A smile will make your date feel more connected and eye contact will show you’re interested in what he or she is saying. Don’t neglect standard flattery. Comments like “You look beautiful” or “Nice shoes” and for the ladies, “That shirt really compliments your eyes,” earn brownie points.

2 3

Touring the museum of your past There is a time and place for everything, but discussing your ex on a first date could be a red flag that you may have unresolved issues, unless perhaps it’s a funny story. It’s no longer taboo to tour your past so that he or she will understand where you’re coming from. But probably wait to clear the decks until the fourth or fifth. Appearance Guys, make some effort and look presentable. Keep the sneakers, vintage t-shirt and torn jeans at home. Don’t wear a suit. If you’re meeting right after work, loosen the tie and take off the jacket. Keep it classic and simple and do not bathe in cologne. Ladies, men are visual creatures. Don’t wear clothes that are too

26

revealing, but put your best heels on. Forget the flats or UGGs. They are not flattering. This does not mean appearance is the only thing that will earn you a second date. You should aim to please with all his senses. The sense of smell is second only to the sense of sight on a first date.

Top mistakes men should avoid:

1 2

Chivalry is not dead Don’t worry about offending your date by opening doors for her or pulling out her chair. Most women notice these small gestures, like them and feel special. Forget dutch and pay the bill. They may offer, but many really don’t want to pay their half.

Monologuing This is a date killer. Do not monopolize the conversation trying to impress, over glamorize your career or even worse – your life period. Be honest and ask questions allowing her to talk the majority of the time.

Top mistakes women should avoid:

1 2

Forgetting to say “Thank you” You may not have paid, but this is extremely important for men. Let a man know you enjoyed yourself and appreciate the effort he made to ensure you had a great time. It leaves a good impression, and he will continue calling and asking you out. The sooner you tell him you had a great time the better.

Put the phone away Men want your full attention. Keep it in your bag. It’s okay if you have young children at home and you receive an urgent call, but mention it at the beginning of the date to prevent any resentment. As Brendan Frances says, “A man is already halfway in love with any woman who listens to him.” Remember, first impressions on a date don’t last. You don’t get a second chance.

FASHION

Designer Edwing D’ Angelo He’s one of New York’s savviest fashion designers who blends style and elegance into his creations, representing various degrees of sophistication and edginess. Edwing D’Angelo is not afraid to think outside the box or color outside the lines by Carlos Mayorga

G

et ready to see a lot more of Edwing D’Angelo. This Spring, he will be the center of a new documentary that highlights his challenges, triumphs and struggles as a fashion designer over the past three years. Although he’s getting ready for some new exposure to a larger mass of people, he’s not new to the game. In fact, he’s been working hard in this field since 1999, putting magic into his formalwear for men and women. “I would describe it as elegant, eclectic and chic,” says D’Angelo of his collection. “I begin my aesthetics with old-school format, but then I try to make it a little bit avant-garde.” So when did he discover a passion for design? Almost since he could walk and talk. “I come from a family of seamstresses and tailors,” says D’Angelo, pointing to his childhood. “In the house, there was always the fashion conversation. They were not so much fashionable in the sense of trends, but they were very knowledgeable of making clothing. I learned the craftsmanship from them, but created my own ideas of what fashion is.” Fast forward and D’Angelo’s line has now been worn by a number of celebrities, including Vivica A. Fox, Tyra Banks and Patti LaBelle. But this ambitious designer was no overnight sensation. He had to work from the ground up. D’Angelo was born in Colombia and came to New York, where he earned a degree in International Business and Arts. With that knowledge, he’s combined his business background with his experience as a designer. With his boutique inside the Limelight Shops in the Chelsea section of

28

Manhattan, he’s currently in the process of launching a new fashion line called EDA by Edwing D’Angelo, which is a more corporate-style line for men. D’Angelo is also promoting his Fall 2013 collection, which will be outside of what people are used to seeing from him. “It’s very romantic,” he says. “I’m using a lot of plaids, kind of like a dark Roman story and Downtown Abbey kind of look. It’s a little dapper, but a little bit younger.” D’Angelo is comfortable opening up about himself and talking about his strengths, weaknesses and mistakes over the past number of years. He put it all on the table in a new documentary film about his life called “Life Is A Runway.” The production is an honest look at his life and for the project, he had to open up, be vulnerable and honest about his challenges. So why did he do it? “Obviously I’m black and I’m Latino,” he answers. “I was trying to research how other black designers have been able to succeed in the fashion world. I found out that there was not one black designer who had a documentary. I felt that as designers of the black Diaspora, we need to document ourselves more.” After struggling and working hard in a competitive field for 14 years, D’Angelo plenty of advice for young emerging designers. “I know creativity is beautiful and it’s glorified today with all the shows and red carpets, but it’s so minimal compared to everything else that you have in place,” he says. “I recommend two things - an internship with a well-established company in fashion, or having good financial and business sense. That is key to both working for yourself or working for somebody else because at the end of the day, it’s the bottom line that matters.”

BEAUTY

Coiffed for the red carpet Oscars styles set the tone for the year ahead. Here’s the glamorous trends to follow.

E

By Jackson Simmonds

ach year we scramble to get in front of someone’s television, somewhere, to catch the red carpet extravaganza that is The Academy Awards - the glamour, the fashion, the sex, the jewels and of course, the hair. The looks we saw this season literally left us slack-jawed. While not a new concept, retro glamour continues to remain au courant for the white hot celebrity set. Take a journey with us as we examine the coiffures these beauties featured at the Oscars: Soft and loose waves are allowed to spill down one shoulder in an effortless manner a la Veronica Lake. This look is achieved in a wet-to-dry style using large pin curls, traditionally speaking, or for a more modern approach, large sections are wound tightly on a medium-barreled curling iron in alternating directions. For her red carpet look, MY Lifestyle Magazine’s own Elizabeth Ortiz opted for a soft, classic and side-swept chignon that looked as effortless as she did in her floor length, beaded purple gown. The key to keeping it looking this way is the volume - more is more. Blown to perfection against the root using boar bristle brushes will deliver the needed lift, and a large-barreled marcel curling iron will bring the polish to complete the look. Finger waves cemented the theme this year, taking us back to the time of Gatsby on East Egg! Think gel and lots of it - if you didn’t know, gel is back in a big way. The difference in today’s era is the product is softer, water soluble and will not get too stiff or flake. This elaborate, elegant style should not be attempted alone. Look to the pros to avoid a disaster. If properly executed, you will turn heads from one end of the red carpet to the next! But you don’t have to be attending a glamorous event to make all this happen. These looks are translatable to everyday life by incorporating one aspect onto an otherwise ordinary look, as a nod or homage to it’s origins.

Big surprises at the 85th Academy Awards BY CARLOS MAYORGA

T he MY Lifestyle Magazine team was in attendance at the Oscars. Here are the big winners and moments that touched us

I

t’s Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. With newcomer host Seth MacFarlane, a little controversy and lots of buzz, the 85th Academy Awards was definitely a night to remember for our crew. Before the show, everyone was talking about the big snub. Ben Affleck’s film “Argo” was among the favorites for Best Picture, but he was not nominated for Best Director. Fresh off his win for Best Director at the Golden Globes in January, Affleck and his crew were able to float through the controversy and snag the highly coveted Oscar for Best Picture. Perhaps the most-talked about moment of the night was Actress Jennifer Lawrence winning Best Actress for her role in the moving “Silver Linings Playbook.” So overcome with emotion, the actress tripped on the steps while walking onto the stage to accept her award. That’s usually one of those moments that celebrities cringe about, but Lawrence, who wowed photographers on the red carpet in her white gown, took it in stride. Here are a few other surprises of the evening: Daniel Day-Lewis won his third Oscar in the category of Best Actor, this time for his role in the film “Lincoln.” He is the first actor to win three Best Actor awards. Director Ang Lee won Best Director for his film “Life of Pi.” This is the second time he’s won this award. He first won in the category for his film “Brokeback Mountain” in 2006. Host Seth MacFarlane. Our Oscars team says he nailed it at times with his fearlessness in some of the controversial jokes that he used to spice things up, but there were instances when he went too far, including the joke about U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps the funniest part of the evening was his banter with Actor William Shatner.

Real transformation in the real world

E

BY KAREN HOYOS veryone on this planet has a purpose. Millions are looking for it, many others are pursuing it and very few are actually living it. I have worked with thousands of graduates of my seminars and witnessed their extraordinary transformation.

During this time, I have seen people start to fully commit to a life of growth, but after some time just quit and go back to their comfort zone supported by a thought-out excuse. I have also had the gift to facilitate the transformation and empower brave leaders to step up against any obstacle and fulfill their mission. For all of them, I am deeply grateful. What does it take for people to transform their life in every area and fully live their purpose? I am not just talking about some aspects of their life or a temporary change that they might get in their church, temple or even in a workshop. This is not just having the concept of inner transformation in their mind - this is the real deal. In fact, many people live in an illusion of two worlds, the “spiritual” and the “real” world. In their spiritual world, they do acts of kindness. Many of them are admired by others because their business and charity work are in alignment with contribution. However, they believe in their subconscious mind that it is ok to take a break from transformation. Some believe that because they do so much, they must have the right to cheat in other areas of their life. They negotiate their values and find people that will support this unconscious behavior. Of course these people are also not fulfilled. Behind closed doors they suffer from the impact of their inauthenticity, not knowing that the key to get out of that state is congruency.

Congruency is the top value of any spiritual journey. This is the secret to unveil the illusion of separation of the two worlds created by the ego, bringing them together as an eternal present from the essence of our being. Many will prefer to walk away or judge others who dare to do what they are not choosing. It is easier to find an excuse than to take responsibility and really take a stand for the genuine transformation of this world that begins with each of us. How can you bring congruency to your life when it may be so challenging? Here are the principles that you can apply to make congruency your daily practice:

1. Clarity

Clarify why you are on this planet. You have a purpose. If you don’t know what it is ask yourself this question: If you had all the money in the world and all the time to enjoy it, what would you do with your time? When you let go of your attachment to money, all that is left is your calling.

2. Choose powerfully

Make a powerful choice from your heart, and not from your head, that you will truly live your life’s purpose now and not in the future. Make your purpose an emergency, because it is.

3. Clean your space

Let go of the people, circumstances, habits, events and actions that are not congruent with your inner transformation. It may feel challenging in the beginning, but it will be the best gift you will give to the manifestation of your purpose in this planet.

7 tips to raise your vibration to attract your soulmate

I

n my work as a transformational relationship expert, I find that the great majority of my clients come in disenchanted about their relationships. They express pain and frustration, and blame the dating scene or some other outside factor as the reason for their trials and tribulations. In actuality, dysfunctional relationships are not the real problem, but a mere manifestation of the real issue that lies within. Every single relationship is a reflection of how you feel about you. Feelings of sadness, fear, guilt, shame and anger are heavy emotions that vibrate at low frequencies. When you are in that state, you are bringing into your life those relationships, circumstances and events that will perpetuate your feeling bad. In those instances, you are a vibrational match to what you don’t want, making it impossible for you to attract what you do want. Within every desire lies the seed for fulfillment. As a human being you have the innate power and ability to create wonderful things from nothing. It is absolutely possible for you to have the relationship of your dreams. However, in order for you to attract your soulmate and connect in love, you have to raise your vibration. The good news is that there are a myriad of mental, spiritual and physical exercises that can help you raise your vibration. Here are some tools that you can apply easily, most of which you can practice in the comfort of your own home:

1. Fall in love with yourself

I invite you to sit for five minutes every day with your eyes closed and practice saying “Thank You! I Love You!” to every part of your body. Practice this exercise for the next 30 days and you will feel more attractive, confident and uplifted.

2. The Reiki System of natural healing

This is one of the most in-demand healing modalities. It uses non invasive, gentle touch, supports mental and emotional healing and gives an overall sense of profound well-being. Find more here: www. myfantasticlife.com

40

BY BELOVED 3. The Gratitude Effect

This is a book that can transform your relationships. The purpose is to help you to smash limiting beliefs that are holding you back and help you live a life of deeper meaning and awareness. Get it here: www. drdemartini.com

4. Meditation

This ancient practice enables us to drop tension and the sense of separateness. I suggest the “Einstellen“ form of meditation because it is easy and powerful. This practice is not only relaxing, but profoundly healing and empowering as well. Find more here: www.bruno-groening. org/english

5. Kundalini Yoga

A wholesome practice that helps one awaken self-awareness, find a deeper understanding of consciousness and the Universe, and discover pure joy, knowledge and love. In New York, try this place: www. kundaliniyogaeast.com

6. Dancing

It seems so simple, but it’s very effective. Dancing gives us a great opportunity to exercise, have fun and uplift ourselves. Remember, it is not about how well you dance, but how much you enjoy it that makes the difference.

7. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

This is the easiest tool to raise and improve your vibration. It is safe, easy and non-invasive. Check out more here: www.myfantasticlife.com

8. Classical Music

Lastly, try listening to classical music. This practice has been found to correct distorted frequencies within our cells, assisting our health and healing. It has also been found to be beneficial in providing a unique experience for emotional balance. With these seven helpful principles, you can begin the fulfilling journey of attracting the soulmate that you are searching for. All it takes is consistency and dedication to staying on the right frequency.
