Vision is the Fuel of Persistence Yes, we took a moment to pause! As I write this letter of introduction for 2015, which ironically is the last part we edit before going to print, I embrace the new year with choices and possibilities! There’s no better way to start off than with María Celeste Arrarás on the cover. Our editorial team was exclusively invited inside her beautiful home, where the awardwinning journalist opened up her heart, sharing advice through personal reflections and a series of anecdotes in a feature that will serve as a compass to navigate the world to all those who read it. Despite the ups and downs in her personal life, this dynamic woman reminds us that detours are designed to take us to live a more authentic life. Her exclusive interview inside her Miami mansion gave us the privilege to get to know her on a deeper level. In other words, MC sets the example in 2015 with words to live by - “Make Your Life Prime Time: How To Have It All Without Losing Your Soul!” See more at: http://books.simonandschuster.com.au/Make-Your-Life-Prime-Time/ Maria-Celeste-Arraras/9781416585824#sthash.DQEX4sIY.dpuf Also in this issue: Arianna Huffington, one of the most respected media moguls on the planet, spoke to MY Lifestyle Magazine to discuss everything from finding the perfect personal and career balance, to excelling in all areas of our lives for 2015. Don’t miss her advice specifically aimed at Latinos, who are riding the momentum of growth in numbers and influence in this country. For this issue, the magazine has features to make your lifestyle shine! Check out our editor’s picks for 2015 for both men and women. Everything on the list is a must have! Also, go inside the spectacular EB Hotel Miami - a brand new 4-star luxury property - that has become a smart business choice for travelers who are also looking for something trendy. Don’t forget to read our beauty section featuring even more products to die for! Plus, La Fama los Sigue, El Deporte los Junta - celebrity couples that are making headlines. Our special edition of Art Basel Miami features artists such as Lydia Dona, My Col Art Exhibition and the exploration of the Wynwood section. We hope you enjoy the ride while turning these pages, as we’ve named them “Transcending Celestial Beauty.” This is the year to have it all! We are packed with life coaches in health, lifestyle, career, finance and much more. Also check out the Kundalini Yoga Miami and the Rent vs. Buy? articles. We went through our own inner transformation to have a more clear graphic identity, better look and feel, plus we’ve adding new contributors. The competition is fierce. But even if the magazine business feels like a dead end to many, then why do we have so many new publications on newsstand? I decided that I was going to hold on to my vision. I let go of my fear and trying to please everyone. Instead, I’m now putting energy into the clarity of my identity, the boldness in my faith and having determination without distractions, as life coach Jose Antonio Valencia beautifully wrote in this current issue. Believe in magic for 2015! Besos, Elizabeth Ortiz Publisher elizabeth@mylifestyle.us
Embracing the Ups and
the Downs as a Latino Entrepreneur
A
s an entrepreneur, I am consistently looking for new ways to grow. Yes, I look for ways to expand my business, but also, I search for people, organizations and things that inspire me to overcome the many challenges I’m faced with as a Latino entrepreneur. In this case, that “thing” is Israel.
Through a friend, I was introduced to a new book called El Pequeño Dínamo (www.amazon.com), a Spanish adaptation that showcases 21 of Israel’s extraordinary inventions. The book examines life-changing innovations including: Flash Drive; SpineAssist, a robot that reduces errors in spinal surgery; a desalination process that solves the world’s water shortage; IceSense3, a device that freezes breast tumors; Mobileye, a camera used in most cars that hugely increases driving safety…just to name a few. According to the book’s author, Marcella Rosen, “The translation into Spanish was driven by the many similarities between Israeli Innovators and Latino entrepreneurs.” I couldn’t agree more, especially after reading the book. As a Latino entrepreneur, there are many ups and downs. There is no such thing as a straight line that takes us to success. Success requires patience and the return on investment might take years to be fully integrated. And, specifically speaking as a Hispanic American, I am often confronted with the dialogue about Latinos in media. We have to evolve from gender, ethnicity, place of origin and look to the future of what we have achieved by unifying media and strive for ethical-sensitive-building business practices by creating career development for all regardless of adversity. As I build my personal brand in a profit basis-market, I ask myself the ‘why’. I always question my intention and examine the impact that it will have as a whole and the sacrifices that I will make to get to the ultimate goal. Similarly, as I read each of the case studies, I learned of set-backs, challenges, naysayers, rejections, however, the inventor pushed on. Processes, people, strategies were questioned in order to accomplish the ultimate goal. And, that is ok. In fact, it is more than ok. El Pequeño Dínamo offers inspirational stories of out of the box thinking that entrepreneurs and executives would find beneficial in their everyday lives. I think it serves as a great resource in any entrepreneur’s tool kit. And, in the end, as long as the outcome brings profit (personal, financial, professional), it is ultimately relevant to the journey or legacy itself. A year ago, I created the #HISPANICAMERICAFORWARD movement, which is designed to take Latinos to higher places by showcasing transformational entertainment content in all multi-media channels/platforms. As an influencer and public figure, the impact of moving Hispanic America Forward is already a guaranteed, fulfilling profit and ROI that leaves a footprint. #HispanicAmericaForward. EB HOTEL MIAMI
E
B Hotel Miami ( brand-new 4 Star luxury hotel) offering 133 rooms, 3 meeting rooms, outside pool, 24 hrs room service, Miranda International cuisine Restaurant, Lobby bar, 24/7 Fitness Center, complimentary shuttle to and from the Miami International Airport 24/7 Conveniently located 1 mile away from the Miami International Airport, 15 minutes away from Miami Beach, 10 minutes away from Downtown and Coral Gables also just 10 minutes away from the most popular shopping destinations the Dolphin Mall & International Mall. State of the Art property that combines luxury, technology and personalized service, ideal for the corporate business traveler and leisure guests that loves to be pampered and feel like home. Why EB Hotel? Interview with Thomas Zarikian, General Manager Our point of view (hotel group): Building a hotel in Miami allows us to leverage the knowledge of our brand in latin-america, Venezuela in particular, while the US and international market familiarizes with it. We knew that to propel our brand we needed to stand out, and therefore chose the Miami airport area as the best option to showcase our brand. Before the arrival of EB Hotel, the airport area had no true luxury hotels, leaving the market for high-end business travelers, that go in and out of miami on a regular basis, largely ignored. So we thought this was a great opportunity to seize. Coincidentally, we are also getting
familiarized with the nuances of doing business in the US. So as the miami property matures, we are adapting and defining our brand standards to the US culture. Ounce our definitions are complete we will be ready to open up new EB’s across the country. The Customer’s point of view: EB is a smart business choice. Down to the last detail, we have designed our hotel with that traveler in mind. Location: Being next to the Miami International Airport is not the only plus of our location. The EB is at the juncture of 3 major crossroads: LeJeune Road, NW 36th Street and Okeechobee Road. From there, all major areas of miami are just 15 to 20 minutes away. Service: We like to set ourselves apart from the other high-end hotels by offering our guests personalized service. We are not here to check you in and out, we are here to make your trip to miami a success, wether is for business or for pleasure. Comfort: The hotel has been designed with many details to make your stay a delight, the rooms have a real-time occupied/do-not-disturb feature, dim auto night lights that guide you to the bathroom through the night, firmness-adjustable beds, just to name a few. All tiny details, aggregating to an amazing experience. How do you see American Hotel Brands developing in USA? There has always been the belief that it’s easier to invest and develop in latinamerica because its environment is not as competitive. And for the most part, we stand by that belief. This is why you see many local hotel brands to individual countries that don’t venture outside their borders. But with EB, we want to break that belief, and prove that it’s also possible to find great opportunities
in a super competitive environment and prosper. Being in the US really forces your brand to be the best, because otherwise it won’t survive, and that’s what we love about it. Perhaps after developing a few more EB’s in the US some other Latin-American brands will seek to debut here as well. What’s your lifestyle? I’m a workaholic, it’s hard for me to disconnect from work, but when I do disconnect I like mainly to travel, always seeking a new country to visit, a new dish to try, and a new culture to explore. Otherwise I like to exercise during my free time, I love to play basketball or tennis on weekends, as sports is the only way I can over indulge my inner foodie. As for books, I don’t read much fiction, since I find it more efficient to watch the movie later. I usually read non-fiction books that spark my thinking, one of my favorites are ‘From good to Great’ from Jim Collins, ‘Loosing my Virginity’ from Richard Brandson, and ‘Steve Jobs’ from Walter Isaacson. What’s the secret to your success? Patient capital throughout three generation and lot’s of passion for what we do. We have been persistent in growing our brand, not just innumber of hotels, but in the quality of what we do. We are a comprehensive group, we design, develop, operate and brand our own hotels. So this gives us an edge when it comes to adapting our business to new markets. When you have 4 different involved parties in a hotel (i.e. developer, owner, operator and flag brand) those interests usually conflict and end up choking creativity and innovation. It’s sort of the Apple vs. PC effect, but applied to hotels.

The First Lady of Telemundo exclusively invited the MY Lifestyle Magazine editorial team into her chic Miami mansion, where she dishes on how she’s earned the trust of millions of viewers during a career that’s spanned more than two decades
C
omfortably positioned on her sofa overlooking her pristine Miami backyard, Maria Celeste Arrarás takes a moment to reflect on how this all came to be. Her majestic home sits underneath the beautiful palm trees and the serene tropical foliage this area is best known for. Many would call this place paradise.
The mansion represents her values. The large property was well planned, is serene and bright, and yet not overdone or too extravagant. The home was the brainchild of Arrarás and her now ex-husband, built to become a sanctuary from her life as a celebrity and to serve as a setting to raise her children. “It has to be a reflection of who you are,” Arrarás says. “It’s a house that we built with a lot of love. We did the entire house around this huge centennial oak tree. We wanted to make sure that the house kept the essence of the beautiful landscape of Miami.” But once she steps outside her home, her day-to-day life is fastpaced and demanding. Arrarás’ success is the result of a woman who developed a fire and passion for becoming the best. How did she get that unstoppable spirit? She points to her teenager years when she was a championship international swimmer with Olympic hopes. “I had to fight against my own fears and insecurities,” Arrarás says. “When you’re up against a swimmer and you’re in competition, of course there are moments when you have doubt. When you deal with that when you’re little, in such an environment, you learn to cope with them when you’re an adult.”
By Carlos Mayorga
Arrarás is the product of a strong father who demanded excellence in every moment. Those principles were the building blocks that molded her into the woman who would become an award-winning iconic journalist, setting the bar for Spanish-language news in this nation. Her father, José Enrique Arrarás, a well-known politician at the time in her hometown of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, once taught her an important lesson about dedication that she used to excel in her extensive career. As a young girl, Arrarás remembers a time when she came home from school with a C grade. “He looked at me very sternly and said, ‘You never come back to this house with a C,” Arrarás recalls. “You come with either an A or an F – but never a C – because you’re either going to be the best of the best or the best of the worst. But never mediocre.” Fast forward to the present day and Arrarás is among the best of the best and not just in the Spanish-language market. Years ago, she was the first Telemundo on-air talent to crossover to a guest co-host on NBC’s “The Today Show.” Currently, Arrarás and her programs – “Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste” and “Noticiero Telemundo,” anchored by Arrarás and José Díaz-Balart – are racking up some of the highest ratings ever for the network. Those shows were also recently recognized for their excellent coverage last year of the first pope to be elected from Latin America. Although Arrarás can make it look easy, her life and career have at times seemed like a roller coaster. Again, she points to her father for developing her into a person who has a long-term vision and isn’t swayed by temporary setbacks.

“
I learned through him that at times you’re up and at times you’re down when you’re in the public eye,” Arrarás says. “If when you’re up, you believe that you will be up forever, when you’re down, you really won’t be able to survive the down.” In the end, according to Arrarás, success boils down to being passionate and fully dedicated

to your chosen career, but most importantly never leaving your integrity. “I love what I do. I love to deal with the public,” Arrarás says. “But I don’t do this because somebody is going to ask me for an autograph or a photograph. For me, that’s an extra added value. But the day that I don’t have that, I’m still going to continue to be the same person.”
Inside the National 9/11 Memorial Museum
M
eet designer Tom Hennes, principal of Thinc Design, who led the exhibition design team for one of the most important new museums in contemporary America By Ruth Davis
To convey the many experiences of 9/11, Hennes and his team built multifaceted exhibitions amid the archaeological remnants of the towers’ structural columns and the retaining wall that frames the original site. The museum includes a memorial exhibition that employs oral remembrances, mementos and nearly 3,000 photos of victims from all three attacks in 2001, and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.
In April 2007, Tom Hennes entered Hangar 17 at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport for the first time. The 80,000 squarefoot space had become the repository for more than 1,500 artifacts from the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001.
During the grand opening, Hennes stood among hundreds of museum goers there to witness the results of the years he and his team worked on this project. As he watched the first people enter and descend into the massive space, Hennes observed their reactions.
As the leader of the newly-appointed exhibition design team for the National September 11th Memorial Museum, he was stunned by the enormity of the wreckage, its tortured beauty, as well as its quiet eloquence. He was also aware that it all had a strange familiarity, from innumerable news accounts and his own memories of Ground Zero, near where he lived.
“Wherever they had been then, on that September 11th in 2001,” Hennes remarks, “they were here now, at this place, as part of a growing community of witnesses.”
Both the strangeness and the often-uncanny sense of the familiar would guide more than seven years of work with the exhibition design team, the museum’s creative director and the curatorial team. Working on the premise that the events of 9/11 were witnessed by much of the world and even as they seem incomprehensible to so many - the team would select key objects from the rows of haunting and poignant artifacts located in the hangar and integrate these, along with a myriad of images, videos and narrative accounts of 9/11 and its aftermath - into a massive 120,000 square-foot exhibition. The subterranean museum opened to the public in May 2014 and is located 70 feet beneath the twin pools of the National September 11th Memorial at the former site of the World Trade Center.
Hennes expressed hope that the museum would give the millions who will come an opportunity to both reflect on their own experiences and see the events from other perspectives. “The museum is a place of memory and mourning, to be sure,” Hennes says. “But it is also much more than that. I hope that in the end it gives people a sense of possibility, and a greater feeling of readiness to engage both the challenges and the opportunities of the complex world that these events brought into focus.” About Thinc Design: Under Hennes’ direction, Thinc Design is at the forefront of design for public spaces that combine visitor engagement, multifaceted storytelling, diverse communities and evolving narratives utilizing artifacts, digital media, broad visitor participation, and the Internet. The firm’s work focuses on the developing intersection of society and exhibition making in North America, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and South Africa.

uman beings have always been fascinated with the animals. We flock to aquariums, zoos and go on wild safaris just to look at these creatures up close. We study them, learn how they function in their natural habitats, and many of us try to connect with them through the spirit. But there’s also the beauty and grace of these living things. There’s a certain curiosity that forms within us that makes us wonder how they move through their environments, interact with other creatures and what makes them hunger inside. We celebrate these lovely creatures and these photos bring out the inherent rawness and uninhibited nature of their existence. May we learn to develop more compassion for them. We don’t need to eat animal meat or use them for our own gain. We can all coexist in harmony, if we put in the effort.

What is your lifestyle? I live very active lifestyle. As a wife, working mom and philanthropist I am always with a full schedule. However, it is extremely important for me to organize my time wisely according to my priorities for each week.
What is a typical day like for you? I wake up around 645am to prepare breakfast and help kids with anything they need before they leave for school. I usually check up on social media and get my workout in first thing. Then, I shower and head to work. I might be doing a TV appearance, a photo shoot, a conference or seeing private clients for coaching. Dinner time I really make it a must to have time to prepare a home cooked meal for the family that we can all enjoy together.
3
What is your workout routine? The most important thing for my workout is discipline. No matter where I am I always look for a place where I can exercise. I don’t have a specific workout routine as I like to change what I do every day. I love trying new classes and new options all the time to keep it interesting and fun. I got certified as a personal trainer years ago so I know the basics, but I am always ready to learn from other instructors.

Which beauty products do you love that support your lifestyle and that you recommend to your fans? (List four)
First of all I love to have a very clean face. If I’m not doing a photo shoot or TV appearance you will probably see me with no makeup. A must in my beauty kit is the Peter Thomas Roth facial cleansing wipes. I follow it with the Oxygen mask from Bliss to keep my skin young and fresh. The I use the Peter Thomas Roth tinted moisturizer which obviously protects while giving you an even skin tone. For my lips I found this lip balm from Sugar that I simply adore. Finally, even if you don’t have any makeup a little mascara will go along way. My favorite is from DiorShow. This routine takes less than 10 minutes and you will look fabulous without trying too hard.
Carmen Carrera
B
eauty combined with strength and character sum up this superstar Latina. She’s setting the record straight on what matters most about being transgender and proud By Carlos Mayorga
All she wants is fair representation and equal acceptance for transgender people around the world. But Carmen Carrera knows that her work is far from complete. Even after a national television interview with one of the biggest and most-respected global journalists, this hot model and activist knows that her work will continue for some time. That chat with Katie Couric on the show “Katie,” in which Carrera was joined by trans television star Laverne Cox of “Orange Is The New Black,” brought to the surface some of the issues and misconceptions that transgender people consistently face. Although the interview gave Carrera a platform that made her feel like she was “talking to the world,” she admits she was more nervous than she had ever been and had to challenge herself to open up by pushing her doubts aside. “The media seem to believe trans people are all the same,” Carrera says. “Being trans is gender based. Just how we know that every female or male is not the same, this also applies to transgender people. I try to keep these things in mind when speaking to make it known that I may be transgender, but I’m also Carmen. I shouldn’t be generalized based on my gender identity.” Carrera is widely known for breaking barriers as an Elite model and a reality television star, having appeared on the hit show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on the Logo network. Since, she has been speaking up on trans issues and appeared as a special guest on MY Lifestyle Magazine’s multimedia platform MY Lifestyle Extra on Fox News Latino. During her Couric interview, Carrera and Cox were faced with an uncomfortable and invasive question regarding transitioning and genitalia. The clip went viral and sparked discussions. Carrera says people who are fixated on just those things are missing the point. “Private parts and birth gender are the biggest issues trans people deal with growing up and constantly bringing it up or picking at it is just rude,” Carrera says. “I don’t really know how people can get past that curiosity. Trans people have bigger fish to fry. Some of us are still getting treated unfairly for just trying to enjoy our lives and live true. It’s a shame.”

Some of those real issues include how to curb violence against trans people, a group that face attacks at disproportionately higher levels than other segments of the population. But there are growing signs of progress and wider acceptance in culture. With her success combined with the rising stardom of Cox, who earlier this year scored the cover of Time Magazine - Carrera is certain that slowly things are improving with a growing group of visible transgender personalities. “Laverne Cox on the cover of ‘Time’ marks a groundbreaking time for trans people,” Carrera says. “I see this as a beginning step forward for trans people and I see many more in the future as our movement lives on.”

hic Altitude...
“Chic Altitude”: The ready-to-wear collection by Porsche is inspired by the jetset lifestyle enjoyed by visitors to luxurious Alpine ski resorts in the 1970s. The collection combines a futuristic retro look with the purist style of Porsche Design. The collection will be available worldwide in all Porsche Design Stores as well as the official online store. “We didn’t want to take a nostalgic look back. Instead, we wanted to create a retro yet futuristic look, combined with our modern design. As a result, we have created a collection that uses bold, voluminous and protective shapes that swirl around the body. Elegant, ergonomically shaped structures are combined using the latest design techniques, such as bonding and seam sealing, trompe l’oeil texture effects and magnetic clasps,” says Thomas Steinbruck, Creative Director Porsche Design. One highlight of the women’s collection is the successful reinterpretation of the Motocross Leather Jacket by Porsche Design, which stands out this season due to the artful details stamped on the shoulders using laser technology for a three-dimensional effect. Worn with a midi skirt such as the A-Line Skirt, the lambskin jacket has a modern and contemporary look. The collection combines clear, purist shapes with distinctive style elements.
LAS DAMAS DE LINCOLN
L

Applying Makeup Like The Pros
Two in One Shadow: When it comes to eyeliner, I don’t use an ordinary pencil or liquid liner. Instead, I select the darkest color in my makeup palette. Using a small flat brush, dip it into the dark brown or black color. Applying as you would with regular liner, sweep it either over or under your bottom lashes depending how you like to wear liner. Then use a fan brush to wipe away any loose powder, making it smudge proof. You can also create a “gel look” by first dipping an angle brush in water to create a liquid liner from your shadow.
6
Pump up the Heat: This tip will blow you away! Get rid of those electric lash curlers and plug in your blow dryer instead. Blast the warm air onto a (metal) lash curler for no more than three seconds before using. Lightly heating up a lash curler has the same effect on lashes as a flat iron or a curling iron on hair.
7
Making your eyes appear bigger: Using matte white shadow or a white pencil as eyeliner helps give the illusion of bigger, wider eyes.
1
Primer Cheat: Need your eyeshadow to pop? Want it to last longer? The trick is to apply a small amount of light color cream foundation over your eyelid before applying the eyeshadow. You can also use a light color concealer as a base coat to set the shadows for a more vibrant color and longer-lasting wear.
3
Bold Brows: This is an easy way to an attention-grabbing look. Using a doublesided brow brush, comb your brows with the spoolie side or clean mascara wand. Next, take your brow powder and slightly shape the brow using the angled side of the brush. After shaping, it’s time to set the brows. Softly dip the brush into clear sculpting wax and lightly apply to the brow hairs using short strokes. Finish by blending a shimmery or matte highlighter shadow right on top of the brow bone to add brightness and contrast. Pro Tip: Make your face more noticeable with thicker, fuller brows. With KNT PRO COSMETICS Universal Brow Palette, you can achieve the look you want - thick, thin or just a shading in of your natural brows.
2
Airbrushing without an Airbrush machine: The beautyblender is a reusable round makeup sponge that allows you to apply foundation flawlessly and effortlessly. You can use these beauty sponges with liquid, powder and/or cream foundations. The end result leaves you with a similar effect to using an airbrush machine. The beautyblender is fast, effective and easy to clean. The sponges can last for about two months before they need to be replaced.
4
Business Card Eye Stencil: I learned this trick while working backstage at Haiti Fashion Week and I’ve been using it ever since. Take a business card to create sharper, more defined lines when applying eyeshadow for a dramatic look. This trick works great for creating a “cat eye” effect.
9
Re-Using Strip Lashes: Although I’m not a fan of using the same lashes twice, sometimes you can’t run down to the drugstore for new ones. I learned this savvy trick participating in a number of shows and conventions. All you need is a small towel, a cotton swab, makeup remover and alcohol. With the lashes over the towel, dip the swab in makeup remover and softly rub off the dry glue. Then it’s time to dry up any excess oil. To do this, dip the other side of the swab in alcohol and lightly apply to the lashes.
8
Magic Lash: To transform the thickness of your lashes, apply a small amount of cornstarch or baby powder before putting on mascara. Be sure to use a separate mascara wan
1
0 Perfect Red Lips: There’s nothing more seductive and intriguing than bold, red lips. Take a sharp red lip liner and outline the outer part of your lips. While applying, remember to smile for the best coverage and more precise lines. Then fill in the lips using the side of the liner to help the lipstick last longer. Using the same shade as your chosen liner, take a lip brush and apply the lipstick. If you make a mistake, use a cotton swab to erase it. A small concealer brush can fix, cover and conceal any shadows or rough edges. Pro Tip: For fresh makeup every time, replace your mascara at least once a month and clean your personal brushes at least once every two

Things NOT to Do After You’ve Gained Weight!
You’ve put on some pounds, and not in the form of muscle. It happens. And it’s okay. So often we’re bombarded with things we must start to do to lose bodyfat stat. But what about all the things you’re already doing that may be adding to the problem? As much as I hate to come from a place of “don’ts”, here’s a list of things it’s a good idea not to do when you’ve gained weight. 1 Don’t Start Skipping Meals Skipping meals won’t help you lose body fat in the long run. Studies show that eating every few hours helps stabilize your blood sugar and speeds up your metabolism and will keep you from making bad choices at the next meal and the next one after that (since you’d be starving otherwise). Plan ahead, and make sure to eat every 2-3 hours. Pre-planned portioned and nutrient dense unprocessed snacks and meals will do the body good and stop you from gorging later on. 2 Don’t Mentally Punish Yourself Punishing yourself by staring in the mirror with fury or calling yourself “fatty” or showing your friend your muffin top isn’t going to magically melt the fat around your waist—and it’s going to work against you. Research shows that people who practice selfcompassion are more effective at changing their behaviors. YES! Being unkind to yourself will make you more upset and likely lead to emotional eating. Accept your weight gain (for the moment), and focus on all of the amazing positive choices you are making and the fact that you are willing to make changes that will last for ever! 3 Don’t Spend a Ton on New Clothes Weight loss takes time, so it may be a while until you fit into your skinny jeans. In the meantime, get busy doing some bargain shopping. No need to spend too much money since your weight gain is only temporary, but stocking up on a few pieces will help you feel better about your appearance, which would be a good idea. (There’s nothing more emotionally draining than not being able to breathe in the pants you are wearing.) Remember folks, feeling better about yourself
By Fitness Coach Ben Bailey CPT, CES, CN
will help you make better food choices. 4 Don’t Obsessively Weigh Yourself The key to healthy weight loss is to stay consistent and be patient with your diet and exercise, getting adequate sleep and controlling your negative stress levels. Typically, a person should not lose more than one to two pounds per week of bodyfat, but it could be more or less depending on you and your body type. And, remember your weight will fluctuate depending on how much water you are retaining, what time of day it is, and what your hormone levels are. Try weighing yourself once a week in the morning, when
you weigh the lightest. This way you can focus on the process and not the number. 5 Don’t Over-Exercise Start slow and steady, and be consistent. If you are overly ambitious, the whole plan may go the way you don’t want. Instead, be realistic. Also, over-exercising when not eating and sleeping properly, is extremely foolish—which can actually cause you to gain more and more body fat weight. 6 However Don’t Stop Exercising, Either Think your weight gain may be due to too much muscle bulk? Highly unlikely, before you throw your free weights out, you may want to reconsider. Some women are afraid that lifting weights may make them bulk up, but this is very unlikely to happen since you would have to be eating A LOT of calories. Muscle is more metabolically active than other tissue and will
ultimately help you lose weight, as in body fat and make you look smaller. You’ll also look leaner and improve bone health. 7 Don’t Try a Fad Diet The problem with “diets” is that they’re not meant to be followed for a long period of time. You’re not just looking for the easiest and fastest way out of your new jean size. You want to lose weight and sustain that for a healthier you for the long-haul. Diets usually promote some type of miracle recipe for weight loss, such as cutting out a specific food group! Problem is, once you deviate from the diet, you gain the weight back...and many times this comes on faster and more furiously. The key to sustained weight loss is to eat real (not processed) foods that incorporate a balance of healthy fats, nutrientdense carbs, and lean protein and a CHEAT Meal at least once or twice a week, depending on how intense your workouts are. 8 Don’t Ignore Your Hunger Cues By learning to pay attention to your hunger cues and listening to your body, you will stop yourself from overeating and teach yourself to properly satisfy your hunger without stuffing yourself silly. This of course doesn’t happen overnight, but you can learn to do it. You should eat when you are slightly hungry and stop eating when you are slightly satisfied. If you LISTEN to your body, you will never over-consume too dramatically, even if the food you are eating is decadent. 9 Don’t Focus On What You Can’t Eat Why waste your energy on what you can’t eat when you can focus your attention on all of the amazing and super-powerful foods you can eat? Nutrient dense foods that give you vitamins and minerals and give you more energy overall! You’ll be so much happier if you make an effort to shift your thinking in this way. 10 Don’t Call It Quits and Accept Your Body Fat Weight Gain Stay empowered by setting small, attainable goals. Hire a fitness coach to help you take out the guess work and connect the dots! Once you see you are able to achieve these goals, I promise you’ll feel even more motivated to practice healthy habits. Stay focused. Stay positive. Stay Healthy.

arry’s Bootcamp is the “Cheers” of the fitness world. As the song said, “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.” At Barry’s, we know your name and you become part of our family. There’s a camaraderie between members and staff alike because we know that we’ve all chewed the same dirt. You may have taken my class, Michelle’s, Derek’s, or another awesome trainer’s classes -- yet still there’s a bond shared between everyone, like a subtle sweat wipe of the forehead from the person leaving class to the person about to enter. Or if you’re on the street and see someone wearing a Barry’s shirt there’s an instant bond, kind of like those Jeep people waving at each other on the road, “You got a Jeep, I got a Jeep … we cool!”

Barry’s Bootcamp is often touted as the best workout in the world, and I’d have to agree. I mean, if I didn’t agree I should probably go work somewhere else, right? Seriously though, I’ve worked and worked out at “globo gyms” such as 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, and smaller chains but I’ve never felt any camaraderie at those places, neither as staff or a member. It’s just not a personal experience. In my 11 years in Miami Beach, I’ve seen Gold’s Gym and David Barton close their doors. But I’ve seen Reebok CrossFit, Flywheel, Green Monkey, Barry’s and more open their doors just in the last three years. This is the growing trend of luxury fitness. Some people call it specialty fitness, but I think of it more as luxury fitness because it tends to be more expensive than the commercial gym. That said, the benefits sure outweigh the cost in my opinion. First, there’s ease of access; you get in, you get out. No long hallways to walk down, no elevators to take, and no bathrooms hidden in some weird far-away corner of the place. They’re not dirty and dingey like so many big gyms. They’re clean and quaint. A one-shop-stop where you get the best bang for your buck!

Barry’s Bootcamp is a lot like personal training, but in a group setting. The class is usually divided into two groups. One group starts on the floor and one on the treadmills, then you switch places after a certain timed interval. On the treadmills (which happen to be pretty much the best treadmills money can buy), you will do a great variety of activities such as jogging, running, sprinting (of course!), side shuffling, backwards runs, and even this amazing thing called Dynamic Mode. On the floor there’s also a huge playbook of exercises designed with the use of resistance bands, booty bands, free weights, and body weight. It is a HIIT workout; high intensity interval training and yes I promise it will be intense but it will be fun. The music will be pumping and we’ll be fist-pumping along to encourage you to stretch beyond your comfort zones and change your body. Rent vs Buy? A
place to live is one of humankind’s basic needs, and as such, the choice of where and how you want to live will have a considerable impact on your life. When choosing a home, you have two basic options. Should I rent, or should I buy? Whether you are looking to live somewhere yourself, or you are supporting your child through their college years or post-graduation, housing is a considerable and unavoidable expense. The question then becomes, which option is more financially appealing? When starting off on their own, most people rent – typically by necessity. If you are moving to a new community, renting is also a great way to get to know the “lay of the land” and determine what neighborhood is the right fit for you, without having to make a long-term commitment. However, when looking at the long term, as well as from an investment standpoint, purchasing a home is the wise choice for many people. When buying real estate, you are replacing your monthly rent with a monthly mortgage payment, which will often times be a bit higher than what the rent would be
when you roll in property taxes and common charges. However, you need to remember that when you own your home you are building equity, and the property is likely to increase in value (relative to what you paid) in the long term. Furthermore, keep in mind that one day your mortgage will be paid off, while the burden of rent never goes away. Here are a few important points to consider. In order to break even on a property, you need it to appreciate enough to cover closing costs on both buy and sell side of the transaction which includes transfer tax, commissions, etc. Now, let’s say that you’re going to be renting a one bedroom for $3500 for the next 3 years. Assuming that the rent doesn’t go up once, you will spend $126,000 on rent! That’s money out of your pocket that you will never see again. Let’s compare with a purchase. For comparison, let’s choose a one bedroom unit in a co-op for $650K with 20% down payment. That’s $130K down plus approximately $15,000 in closing costs is $145K out of your pocket. Assuming the carrying costs are $1000, plus your
mortgage would put your monthly payment at approximately $3500. Over 3 years you’ll spend the same $126,000. The difference is that of this $126,000 a portion every month will go towards paying down the loan’s principle, meaning you will see the money again. On top of that, the interest on your monthly payments as well as the property tax is tax deductible. You will see a chunk of this money come back at year’s end when you file your taxes. After 3 years the property will have appreciated in value and you will have paid off a chunk of the loan. Subtracting the new total price minus the loan amount, and your closing costs allows you to not only live rent free, but make money for living somewhere! For those who have the liquidity to put down 20% of a purchase price, buying definitely makes financial sense. Mi Vida a la Carrera
Desde Manhattan Authored by
Elsa Gladys Cifuentes Aranzazu.
M

Kundalini Yoga Miami Some have described the ancient practice of Kundalini Yoga as a life force and the spark in all creation. Many who are now turning it for self improvement say it helps remove doubt, insecurity and fear - all through using the power of our own energy. Kundalini comes from the word ‘Kundal,’ which means “the curl of the hair of the beloved.” It is the coil of your creative potential. When the body and mind are properly focused on the power of this practice, enough pressure is generated to allow the Kundalini to rise. As the potent energy rises, the heart opens and the mind becomes calm. Inspiration, intuition and creativity can then form the intersection where you are free to experience and reclaim your divine nature. Yogi Bhajan, the Master of Kundalini Yoga, taught that “Sex is everything, sex is nothing.” Sex is our creative power given to us by nature. That energy can remain lustful or horny, but if it is raised to the higher centers of consciousness it can become a total psyche adjustment. Sex, when done in consciousness, can bring us back to an experience of God within. This is true of our creativity and most anything done in consciousness. Even everyday things, like the doing the dishes or smiling consciously, can bring you back to an experience of God within. It does not have to be mysterious or complicated; it’s a matter of enjoying the experiences life has to offer and taking responsibility for it.
It does not have to be mysterious or complicated; it’s a matter of enjoying the experiences life has to offer and taking responsibility for it. Teachers of this practice have long taught that reclaiming your divine nature can not only make you more physically fit, but more importantly it pushes you beyond self-imposed limitations. These obstacles include anything that keeps you feeling insecure, fearful and/ or in conflict. Removing doubt from our lives is not possible if we do not confront them. In short, Kundalini Yoga teaches us that we have to clean and develop the neutrality of the mind. Since limitations like insecurity often run deep in our personality, learning to utilize techniques like Kundalini Yoga and Meditation can give us
the ability to remove (much like taking out the garbage) these subconscious layers. Once detached, we can be present moment to moment, dealing with what is—instead of being stuck in old subconscious patterns. We can begin to discern what is important and healthy for our true inner nature only when we become aware of the impact of our habits. As the past is cleansed from the mind, we can better deal with everyday life, as in right now, including whatever stress or challenges we find there. We are healthier for it because we are just dealing with the challenge in the present not with every challenge we have ever faced from birth and up until now. The snowball of life melts when we learn to calm the mind. An integral part of Kundalini Yoga is developing a neutral mind. Bhajan also taught that the mind is a “unit energy given to serve you. Be its guide and not its slave.” The journey of self-awareness and creative control of the mind does not happen by osmosis: some days you will sweat, some days you will do a 31 minute meditation. Once you begin acknowledging and experiencing your capacity to endure and flow with life, your self confidence will increase and you can begin to live a life comfortable in your own skin - glowing and growing in the most practical experience of infinity yoga has to offer.

LATIN BEAUTY IN MIAMI Refresh & Rebeautification
T
By Dr. Leonel Calderon MD he philosophy of restoration is to bring back to life the natural and original state of beingsometimes graced with slightest nuance of enhancement of a given composition.
Here in Miami this approach holds true in architectural design, master art, environmental landscapes, and a natural beauty aesthetic known as Rebeautification. The foundation of my practice. Rebeautification Aesthetics is rooted in rejuvenating, refreshing, refining, refinishing and reawakening the overall state of an individual’s appearance with an honest and natural hand. The Refresh / Rebeautification Aesthetic was inspired by emerging trends that focus on overall advantages of beauty in relationship to an individual’s health and wellbeing. I think that beauty has just been taken out of
the realm of what is natural to the extreme in so many areas --from dangerous weight loss, superhero muscles and the biggest offender of all facial enhancement that all contribute to turning people into characters of themselves If you didn’t have full pouty lips at 30 you probably shouldn’t have them at 45 years of age. You can have a naturally looking age defying lips, eyes and complexion surface that you yourself had several years ago or at the very least enhance what nature gave to you –that is principal in which I have based the Refresh/ Rebeautification Aesthetic philosophy. The Refresh / Rebeautification Aesthetic offers clients an opportunity to experience an individualized one on one consultation that results in a package and or series of select tailored treatments over a six to eight week period. I would prefer if clients brought me a picture of
themselves where they absolute loved the way they looked, we don’t have many but we all have that one photo, don’t’we ?”. I thinks it’s a realistic start rather than some one walking in with photographs of Angelina Jolie or Sexiest Man Alive for that year.” There are Immeasurable qualities of beauty each individual possesses and the tides are turning and washing away the belief that have to look like some body else to look and feel beautiful. I think the time has come to remove the mask aspect of aesthetics and start working organically with someones own personal uniqueness. My broad vision for Refresh / ReBeautification Aesthetic is establishing a consortium of specialists that offer consultation and services that cover health & beauty inside and out. In a world that is becoming more intolerable of the belief that you are only young once, alternative naturally appealing time re-winders are the future for health and beauty .
THE LEGACY of momentum education
W
ith the usual mix of office buildings, parking garages, deli-markets, and restaurants, East 45th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue in Manhattan seems fairly unremarkable. It teems with people at certain times of the day as commuters make their way to or from nearby Grand Central Station. But passers-by have no way of knowing that, day in and day out, on the fourth floor of a nondescript building on East 45th Street, Momentum Education, a modest training and consulting company, is changing the world. Momentum offers an array of workshops, courses, seminars and coaching packages designed for people committed to changing or enhancing not only their lifestyle, but the lives of the people around them, as well. Founded 11 years ago by Robin Lynn, who led trainings in Russia, South Africa, Canada and the US, Momentum is recognized as a leader in high-impact adult learning models. “Our curriculum encourages people to re-imagine what ‘lifestyle’ really means,” said Momentum Executive Director Robinson Lynn, the Founder’s son, in a recent interview. “And as part of that, people can then choose a more fulfilling lifestyle suited to a world they themselves have designed.” Robinson and the Momentum Team see themselves as every client’s possibility partner. In other words, Momentum’s expertise is in illuminating the greatest possibility in each client, and then coaching them toward excellence. This is the foundation of every lifestyle change or enhancement. It’s also how Momentum is changing the world. “We ask big questions at Momentum, “ Robinson said. “Big questions deserve big answers. So our clients, using Momentum’s breakthrough curriculum, respond by growing their ability to produce outstanding results.” With that in mind, My Lifestyle Magazine asked Robinson what he sees as Momentum Education’s legacy. He spoke about the culture of inclusion at Momentum, and how the company encourages its clients to touch, move and inspire others, in part, by making that a practice in their own lives. “Some heroes are born, and some are made,” he said. “But in one way or another we’re all heroes looking for an opportunity to be heroic. Momentum invites people to be heroic about creating the life they want.” Then he paused, and let an silence hang in the air. “My mother founded this company on the premise that everyone matters,” Robinson continued. “So that’s our legacy: a world in which everyone matters. And because everyone matters there’s justice, and fairness, and equality and all of the things that most people hold as ideals.” This seemed to have very little to do with lifestyle changes, so we asked for clarification. Robinson again referred to Momentum’s founder. “OK. Consider this, “ he said. “My mom was a strong swimmer, not just in the water but in life, too. And through Momentum Education, she taught people how to swim in life… how to get to the top when life’s undertow pulled them down… how to be versatile and go with the flow or swim against it… how to take a leap of faith when you would rather just lay on the shore and watch the day go by. So that’s the other part of Momentum’s legacy. We’re teaching people to swim in life.”
modern suit
M
en’s fashion trends are greatly different to women’s. They exist, yes. But their cycle moves much slower. Which is a great thing – it means you can afford to spend more on a suit. In addition, adjustments can be tailored to meet indi-
vidual’s requirements. So there, from the get go, as we describe the suit cuts you should be looking for this season and beyond, we have to say it: you’re looking for a slim cut; and I use slim as opposed to skinny to describe the on-trend cut as your investment in a good suit should be in something that is neither overly-skinny nor overly boxy, one that accents a sense of the masculine through the key characteristics mentioned above. The classic part is the easy part. A good suit for this decade will take the best elements from the peak eras of men’s suiting (think the formality of the Victorian era, the savoir faire of the 1930s and, for some cuts, the skinny detailing of the 1960s) and apply them to a modern silhouette. The masculinity of a suit is less easy to define; one can’t simply enter a tailor shop and say you want a suit infused with masculinity. Sadly, it doesn’t work that way. Instead, suits right now are all about a cut that compliments the male physique, a suit that broadens the shoulders and trims the waist, highlighting (or at least implying) an exercised body. In short, it’s about a cut of a suit that makes you, the wearer, feel more masculine and more confident. And feeling really is key. To some, the masculine element will be a suit that is clean cut, with few embellishments. To others, it means a suit full of extra details that takes a certain attitude to pull off well. Hopefully, by now you have a clearer idea of the style that you’re after – or at least the styles, shapes, cuts, colors and fabrics you should be picking from. Squire Boutique has the finest collection for a classic men’s suit, which will look dapper at the office party or smart and cool at a wedding. These suits are available in slim fit and skinny fit, the suits have a truly contemporary silhouette. For timeless style, they offer suits in black, grey, blue, and navy – perfect for any occasion. Or stand out in party season with checkered jackets and printed trousers. We’ll be frequently updating all our trend guides across 2015, so make sure you stay up to date with all the latest fashion trends by subscribing to My Lifestyle newsletter or by following us on Facebook.
Arianna Huffington Making America Thrive One of the world’s biggest media moguls spoke to MY Lifestyle Extra to discuss everything from finding the perfect personal and career balance, to exceling in all areas of our lives
The Union Of Two Successful
Powerhouses
S By Carlos Mayorga
ince the release of Arianna Huffington’s New York Times bestselling book “Thrive” earlier this year, some Americans have begun embracing a new belief on what it truly means to be successful. Many who once thought that money and power best fit that definition have found that – without healthy living, sleep and a connection to our spiritual self – we remain far from those things. Huffington is best known as the president and editor-inchief of the popular news website The Huffington Post. She joined MY Lifestyle Extra on Fox News Latino to further elaborate on the breakthrough of what it really means to excel in life. Her transformation began about seven years ago after collapsing from exhaustion in her office and injuring herself. “That’s what got me thinking about the third metric to success, which is really about our well-being; our capacity to connect with our own essence and wisdom; our ability to wonder about life and the mysteries of life, and to give back,” Huffington said. Latinos are growing fast in terms of population, but progress when it comes to achievement in education and economic empowerment in the United States is increasing at a much slower pace. According to this media mogul, overcoming financial, societal and political obstacles begins with a personal belief in our own abilities. “I started life as an incredibly self-judgmental person,” Huffington said. “I think the most important thing that we need to do is silence that voice of self doubt and judgment inside our heads.” “I call it the obnoxious roommate living in my head,” she further elaborated. “And I think that’s the voice that puts us down, that tells us that we’re not good enough, that we cannot achieve our dreams. And I think that when we learn to silence that voice, we connect with our own inner strength.” That power lies within all people, she continued, and comes after we find time to connect with ourselves. “We cannot ever control life,” Huffington said. “Life brings us obstacles, challenges. So the question is, ‘Can we transcend them?’ Can we be bigger than that?’ And we can.”

YO U R L I F E . YO U R H O M E . YO U R
The wise way to drive yourself around the city. he way we move tells a lot about ourselves. Once, irrational misuse of energy by using expensive heavy contaminant and inefficient vehicles was trendy in many spheres as a symbol of success.
Arriving at a convention, at a premier, at a party with a big limo or an expensive sport car really seemed to be important to decorate an impressive entrance. Fortunately now a days the use of “luxurious” combustion engine cars is out of date and increasingly reserved to people that doesn’t realize the message they are now transmitting about themselves is not very positive. Once we all know that combustion engine cars waste more than 80% percent of the energy they consume and their contaminant e m i s s i o n s are risking life sustainability in our planet, the wise thing to do is to promote alternative cleaner ways of producing and consuming energy also for our personal transport and daily commuting. Public transport powered with electricity produced from clean renewable sources is by far the most efficient way of transporting people in big cities, but obviously it is always tight to fixed itineraries. 100% electric cars as well powered with renewable energy are considered very efficient, capable of taking advantage of almost the 90% percent of the energy consumed. But in big cities such as New York the traffic is still too heavy even for these vehicles. Although we contribute to lower the emissions they don’t seem to efficient in big cities regarding

Will Brazil Join Greece In A World Cup Financial Hangover?
A
s they watched the $11.3 billion 2014 World Cup in Brazil conclude, many Greeks felt a familiar bitter feeling. It is the feeling of “been there, done that.” It is the painful wisdom of a recovered alcoholic that sees his friends pour themselves far too many drinks on a Saturday night.
was only 10 years ago when the Mediterranean nation was on top of the sports world, drawing international media attention like Brazil did this past month. In 2004, Greece hosted the Summer Olympics at a cost of nearly $11 billion by current exchange rates, double the initial budget. Ten years later, Greece’s gross domestic product has shrunk and the country is facing the worst recession in its history.
This feeling in essence says: “I know how this is going down.” In Greece’s case, it “went down” in an unprecedented financial crisis that left the country on the edge of bankruptcy, with a 26 percent unemployment rate, among the highest in the European Union.
Without a doubt, the Olympics was not the only cause of Greece’s economic demise. The games was just one of several areas where public spending went unchecked and funded by unsustainable borrowing. But the general overspending and reliance on easy money was exacerbated by the spending spree.
And Greece isn’t alone. For years, studies have shown that holding major sports events often result in severe negative economic effects. Cities and countries are drawn to the opportunity of increased economic activity thanks to construction and tourism. But once construction is initiated, governments often fail to budget accurately. And after the sports event is over, many cities are left with infrastructure that suddenly has no real use. This is precisely what happened in Greece. It
To make matters worse, after the games ended, the costly sports venues were too expensive to maintain. As a result, most of them were abandoned and remain in a dilapidated state. This did not only happen in Greece. There are many cities all over the world where Olympic venues go entirely unused, rotting away after billions of dollars went into their creation. In 2005, just one year after hosting the games,
Greece became the first EU country to be placed under fiscal monitoring by the European Commission. Seven years later, in 2012, it was already on the brink of bankruptcy, signing its first bailout agreement in exchange for severe austerity. Brazil invested 25.8 billion reais ($11.3 billion) in Cup-related infrastructure improvements, a third of which went into building or overhauling stadiums in a dozen host cities. Seven years ago, when Brazil won the right to host the World Cup, then-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva vowed to use the tournament to shake off underdevelopment for the benefit of the people. But residents were not convinced. In fact, just a few days before the tournament began - strikes and protests led to fires and tear gas - a clear manifestation of a far from idyllic situation. Under these circumstances, Brazil will need to face allegations of corruption and mismanagement head-on. And it will need to aggressively monetize the marketing opportunity that the World Cup has presented. Otherwise, it could very well be following in Greece’s lamentable footsteps.
