Bringing in the visitors

Every New Zealander knows we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and over the past year, we’ve welcomed a record three million visitors, which is fantastic news. This milestone is a great testament to New Zealand’s tourism industry and to the hard work of all those involved in the sector. Not only are record numbers of visitors coming to New Zealand, they’re also staying for longer and spending more than ever before. In the year to July, those three million visitors spent a total of $8.7 billion during their stay – up 28 percent on the previous 12 months. This is helping to boost our economy, not only in our main cities, but also in the regions and creating more jobs and opportunities for New Zealanders. Tourism was directly responsible for over 94,100 jobs in the industry and supported a further 72,700 in the year to March 2014. It’s a significant part of New Zealand’s economy – our second biggest export earner – contributing around seven percent to our GDP. This is why the National-led Government has invested an unprecedented $600 million in tourism and tourism promotion. Our approach is working. Campaigns promoting New Zealand as an outstanding visitor destination reached a global audience of more than 1.2 billion people last year. New Zealand benefits strongly from tourism growth. That’s why the Government has invested in hosting major events like the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup and the FIFA U20 World Cup, and projects like the New Zealand Cycle Trail. The Cricket World Cup boosted our GDP by $110 million, created over 2,000 new jobs and showcased New Zealand to an international television audience of more than 1.5 billion. The New Zealand Cycle Trail consists of 23 great rides across the country and is helping us attract more tourists, both local and international and its popularity continues to grow. In September, the Government also authorised a strategic alliance between Air New Zealand and Air China, which will see travellers able to access more flights and lower fares between New Zealand and China. China is our second largest tourist market behind Australia, with visitor arrivals due to double in the next five years. A raft of urban cycleway projects in Auckland are also underway as part of the Government’s Urban Cycleways Programme. These projects will improve the cycle network in the central city, and the eastern and western connections to the city, as well as links to public transport hubs. Tourism makes a sizeable contribution to New Zealand’s diverse and resilient economy and I look forward to reaching our next tourism milestone.

Advisory groups are a great addition to any small and medium enterprise, adding capability to the company in areas such as leadership and management, team development, sales and marketing, HRM, internal processes and operations. Businesses of all sizes can benefit from having their own team of external advisors. An advisory group is a team of people selected by the owners of the business (or a Board if the business is large enough) to guide, counsel and advise a company’s CEO and management on any number of issues in a flexible open and consultative manner. Advisors from different disciplines complement the strengths and expertise of the company’s management. Typically they may include a business coach, the company accountant, or a specialist in any other discipline as required. Advisory groups can be standing (ongoing) or ad hoc (one time) in nature. The advisory group members will have a range of skill sets that will add to and therefore assist the company. An advisory group is particularly useful in start-up and small companies, providing fresh ideas and unique perspectives. Support and guidance from your advisory group may give you a greater chance to accelerate growth, improve financial performance, manage risk and enhance operational performance. The whole point of having an advisory group is to improve the company performance by tapping in to the skills of the members. Companies considering setting up an advisory group must answer a key question: “Why we are establishing an advisory group and what do we want out of it?” Thinking carefully about an advisory board’s purpose will ensure that it will be structured to maximise its contribution to an organisation’s success.

In August the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) and the Commission for Financial Capability (CFFC) released a survey of more than 1,000 people who were over 50 years of age about their expectations for retirement. Nearly half have yet to do any retirement planning, a quarter have never completed an investment risk profile questionnaire and, of most concern, all respondents on average believed that an investment return starts to become ‘fairly high’ only when it hits a whopping 15 percent. I took three main points from my reading of the results. First, it is clear that many people need to do more planning. The survey found that 46 percent of respondents hadn’t done any planning about their retirement. This is a concern given how important it is to set investment objectives and plan retirement goals. Secondly, most people are risk averse when it comes to investing. Of those surveyed, 83 percent believe high risk investments are to be avoided. Lastly, the survey shows that many people have unrealistic return expectations. Following ongoing falls in interest rates, a softer growth outlook and lower dividend yields on shares, our research team have recently further reduced their long-term return forecasts for a balanced portfolio to around five percent to six percent, depending on the mix of assets. Compare that with the results of the survey which showed that respondents on average thought a five percent return to be fairly low, nine percent to be a medium return, and 15 percent to be fairly high. In my view, the ‘medium’ and ‘fairly high’ returns would require an investor to take extraordinarily high risks to achieve.
An advisory group should consist of the owner and people with skills and or experience who can add value to the business. Group members must have the background experience and skill sets to add value through their capabilities matching the company needs.
Remember, the people who expect these returns are the same people who, a few questions earlier, also said that high risk investments are to be avoided. Something clearly doesn’t add up. This is the key takeaway from the survey for me - most investors have a chronic misalignment in expectations between risk and return.
The nature of what is sought should determine the type of people who will comprise the board. The group must clearly define its purpose and desired outcomes. Membership should represent a good balance and have the right chemistry to work their way through various issues that may arise. Compatibility is very important.
Advisers face this every day, which is why educating investors about risk and return is such a key part of their role. They also have to ensure that retirement planning is based on realistic returns to avoid people either not saving enough for retirement or, when retired, taking unsustainable drawings from their capital.
They are mechanisms to improve your company performance through the addition of different skills sets, fresh ideas and all in a non-threatening open, collaborative, consultative, user friendly environment. In effect, they are a safe harbour for discussing ideas and initiatives.

The resources boom in Australia during the last 10 years and subsequent construction activity has seen employee wages skyrocket and many businesses become unsustainable. Now, companies scrambling to remain competitive are making significant redundancies with some sectors seeing as many as 20,000 jobs disappear in one state. From 2006, wages in the resource and resource-related construction sectors increased by as much as 100 percent. In many cases, companies paid workers above market salaries to simply attract and retain them - in some cases at the sacrifice of hiring for competency, experience, cultural fit and attitude. Ultimately, businesses and companies performed poorly due to high wage costs, poor employee engagement, lack of leadership and high staff turnover. Like the Australia resource boom, New Zealand, and especially the Canterbury earthquake rebuild, has entered an unprecedented growth period similar to the one we noticed in our Brisbane office in the 2006 boom. Companies that continue to focus on hiring staff with the right cultural fit, attitude, level of competency for the position, and ultimately keep a conservative approach to salaries, will build a workforce that is sustainable, engaged and will ultimately deliver high productivity. The key to growing staff numbers sustainably in any business is having competent leadership, as staff generally leave their leader and not the business. A salary increase is a short term motivator. If businesses focus on strong leadership, especially in middle management, promote career development opportunities, drive a high performance culture in a fun environment, and give staff challenging work, pay will be well down the scale as to why staff will leave your business. Like Australia, some sectors in New Zealand could experience a changing market at some stage in the future.

It’s topical… should your accounting solutions be “in the cloud?” We’re going to answer that with a… maybe. No, that doesn’t mean we are not prepared to commit – instead we are making a stand that one size does not fit all. Imagine for a moment you’re wearing a business “onesie”. Yes it might look cute, yes, it might be functional – but is it right for you long term? Maybe! A study from the Ministry of Economic Development in September 2011 showed 68.9 percent of New Zealand enterprises had zero employees, a further 20.8 percent had five or less employees… so 89.7 percent cumulatively have five or less employees. Compliance costs can be out of hand. For the small business owner cloud accounting solutions can be just the ticket for you – especially with so many add-ons for the little idiosyncrasies that your business may have - from costings, quoting, job costing, payroll and the list goes on. On the whole, small business owners underestimate how much cloud solutions can offer, especially when the very solution enables your outside advisers to login and work with you on a joint project; be that more clients, getting them back more often and thus increasing the transaction frequency, increasing prices and margins, or being better at your business processes. They all accumulate to building a better business. There are a number of online solutions available and it is all a matter of finding your needs and placing the perfect solution over the top. Herein lies part of the magic solution - you see you may not know the needs you have because it’s not uncommon to not know what you don’t know… so find someone who can help you with the basics, help you through the intermediate steps and then on to the big wide world that is self employment.
However, this may not be to the same extent as the impact of the resources downturn in Australia, so businesses who kept their cost base competitive or had flexibility to handle cost pressures, would remain sustainable into the future.
Okay, so here you are in your onesie and maybe it’s a bit tight around the middle? Are the legs a bit short? Is the collar tight? Yes it is functional – but it’s not going to get you where you need to go.
More importantly, businesses that place emphasis on attracting and nurturing ‘A-players’ through driving an engaged and productive workforce will not only prosper, they will flourish.
Your business adviser is just the same. Regrettably one size does not fit all. It might for a short while, but ultimately you’re going to outgrow it.
People are the foundation of any business and if hiring standards drop to meet the growth demand, learning and development ceases and middle management are promoted beyond their competency, long term business sustainability will be hard to achieve.
So find someone who can grow with you, as personality and ability are part of the equation. So are ability and expertise. Above all let’s remember the purpose of a business is to ‘fund’ your lifestyle and create some fun on the way. If you’re not having fun, then maybe there’s a change afoot.

Thomas Edison was quoted as saying “Genius is one percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration”. I am reminded of this quote as I observe elements of our tall-poppy syndrome manifesting itself again in the under performing NZ business world. An award winning business I know quite well has started to attract some derogatory attention. These disrespectful (and sometimes vitriolic attacks) come from a place that perfectly fits the Wikipedia definition of the tall-poppy syndrome; ‘a social phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers’. But I can tell you the reality is somewhat different. This company started out like many other NZ SMEs; a part-time venture, operated out of the back garden by a young set of parents. As the years have rolled by and their workforce and profits have grown, all they are doing is daring to learn, daring to invest and daring to be accountable. In personal terms, they are simply daring to dream, daring to play and daring to win so they can share their successes. Behind the scenes what people can’t (or prefer not to) see when viewing successful people, is the relentless commitment they have to realising their potential. They don’t see the 99 percent perspiration Edison applied to his one percent inspiration. The sad thing, in respect of NZ’s productivity performance, is the company in question is not doing anything that other companies could not do. When the owner told me about the derogatory remarks he’d received, he said it was because competitors are effectively “leaving their lunch on the table”. What he means is that the marketplace is happy to invest in mediocrity and complacency, while his company is willing to invest in continuous improvement and regular accountability. In other words, they are seizing opportunity others are passing up. Remember, not everything that inspired Edison demonstrated genius. Most people know he failed far more times than he succeeded. Likewise, modern business is the same. The company I am talking about have had their fair share of hits, but they continue to display courage, self reliance and a determination. And like most successful people, any rewards they earn are simply a result of the 99 percent perspiration they apply to their one percent inspiration. Be sure to remember the gravy train does not deliver without continuous effort. If you are not willing to continually perspire in the pursuit of fulfilling performance potential, don’t be surprised if someone wants to eat your lunch.

Many businesses now have a social media presence whether across multiple platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest or Instagram. You can easily see those businesses who spend the time and effort required on their social media campaigns, as there is regular and relevant communication – both from the business and from those they are engaging with. If you are not sure what you can do to increase customer loyalty on social media, here are some tips to help re-energise your efforts. Personalise As customers we all like to feel that we matter and are special, whether we are spending $100 or $1000. It doesn’t take much for a business to show they care and in the non-digital world you would (hopefully) do this by thanking your customer for their purchase and engaging in conversation. It doesn’t make the customer feel great if no words are exchanged or they are not even looked at during the transaction. Rewards Who doesn’t like a reward? Rewarding your fans and customers will encourage them to come back to your page. Here are some suggestions: • Offering discounts for a limited time • Setting up competitions (that are easy to win) • Providing a discount code or a similar reward once you reach a certain number of fans i.e. 100, 500, 1000 or when you reach the first anniversary of your business. There are many ways in which you can show your creativity in offering rewards so do some research to find out what suits you and your business the best. Listening and engaging Listen to what people are saying on social media about your company, your products and/or your service. They may have questions, concerns or a problem that you can easily solve. Monitor your social media activity daily and engage, respond and take any necessary action. Build Trust Essentially do what you say you are going to do. If you are running a special offer and it has an expiry date, don’t cut it short. I knew a café that was offering free coffees all day however, at 11am they decided to stop the promotion and as you can imagine, a lot of negative feedback was posted. An example of how not to run a promotion and build loyalty! Share your values People tend to be more loyal to a company that shares their beliefs and values. If for example, you are active in the community then you should post about what you are doing or if you are sponsoring a charity event then do what you can to promote it.

I recently attended an international Human Factors and Ergonomics Congress in Melbourne. One of the overwhelming themes was around sedentary work practices and the risk to our long term health. One of the workshops was around activity based work, a relatively new concept in terms of how we design our workplaces. This focus appears to be driven by three components: the rising cost of office space, the use of sit stand desks, and sedentary work risks (with the well researched evidence on the increase in risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers). Activity based work design focuses on looking at three areas: behavioural aspects - when people work, are they in an office space all day or out and about some of the time, so do they need a permanent desk? Physical aspects - where people work - can they work at home part of the time, do they need to be in an office space? And virtual aspects - how people work - do they use laptops, tablets, smartphones or desktop technology? What does activity based working actually look like? People have their own personal lockers. There are desks available for them when they are in the office, breakout rooms when they want to avoid interruptions or take phone calls in private, flexible team working areas, more traditional desk based work areas for times when team connection is needed, meeting rooms with virtual technology, kitchens for time away from the desk to eat and socialise, and private rooms for space for sensitive meetings. It can be likened to a neighbourhood-based working space, reflecting lifestyles and culture. Effective technology systems are essential Use of effective technology systems is essential to this way of working. Basically, the workspace needs to be almost paperless. This can be a huge challenge for some organisations, with one of the presenters recommending a three year lead time to prepare for this style of working. Understand and explore your options Of course, this approach is not for everyone. Issues that arise are privacy, space ownership/territoriality, identity and personalisation, equipment/resource availability and noise. Is it for you? Activity-based working is certainly a different way of working and it does lend itself to more collaboration over a wider number of staff within an organisation. Looking at the systems of your organisation as well as the type of work performed and the people who work for you - this is going to give you a much better long term result, whichever way you choose to work.

Start-up survival guide Q&A with Catarina Gutierrez from the Ministry of Awesome By Terri Cluckie
As the Start-Up Activator for Ministry of Awesome (the “enablers” who “connect awesome ideas with the resources to turn them into reality”), Catarina Gutierrez is the friendly face that will help people get their business ideas off the ground and running in the right direction. I caught up with her to talk about start-ups and what you need to know. 1. What are the most important things people should consider before launching a start-up? I think the most important thing for a start-up to know beforehand is to make sure that they’re actually addressing a problem that exists. I think a lot of people have these ideas that they just want to make a product that looks really cool, or software that does something really neat, but if it doesn’t address a problem in the market, then it’s not worth wasting any time and money on. 2. What are some common misconceptions about starting up on your own? One of the most common ones I see is that it’s really expensive. I personally believe that it’s only expensive if you’re not prepared. If you haven’t done the research and validated the idea, then that’s where it gets expensive. I think one of the important things is that if you start small, you can actually afford something relatively cheap and can self fund. For example, a website goes a long way and social media, when managed properly, can help market your idea or business. 3. What are the main challenges that start-ups face in New Zealand right now? I think New Zealand is a relatively small market, so depending on the product or service that you offer, it can be relatively small if you’re just looking to help those in Canterbury or offering something to a specific region. Thinking outside of the box and thinking outside of the country would be really advantageous of a start-up… that doesn’t mean you need to go overseas right away, but I think dreaming big is a really good thing. 4. Finance: where do people even begin? I believe that to finance your own start-up you have to be very scrappy, which means not quitting your full time or part time job just because you have this passionate idea that you want to get off the ground. It means putting in the work outside of your normal working hours,

and using funding or any extra savings that you have from that work to do the other stuff that you’re passionate about.
Other funding can come in the form of small business loans. For example, there are a lot of people and trusts out there willing to give money to small businesses under the $5,000 or $1,000 range which can be really helpful, especially if you don’t want to invest thousands of dollars of your own money straight away. I think it’s also important to know that it doesn’t take a huge amount of money to build a website or to get business cards out there, and these things go a long way. 5. Do you believe that timing is everything for start-ups? If so, how do you know when ‘the time is right’? I think timing is a part of it but I don’t think it’s everything. You will probably get to know your market very well in the process, so it’s really important to know when they are ready because what you’re doing is for the benefit of them. Timing is also important as far as not rushing things just to be out in the market goes, which is

a mistake that I’ve made before with one of my own start-ups. I thought I had to push it out into the market before I was ready because I wanted to beat my competition, but it turned out my market wasn’t ready for the product that I was selling. 6. What would you say to people who have doubts about their ideas? I think the more people you talk to, the more comfortable you get exposing your idea to other people. Doing this will also gain you a lot of feedback which is definitely something worth taking into consideration. I think you need to test your idea or your product as soon as possible, that way you’ll know if it’s something worth pursuing or not. 7. What are the biggest mistakes common to start-ups? One of the biggest mistakes I see a lot is people telling their customers about what they do and not really engaging in a conversation or a community; talking at the customer instead of with them. You get so passionate about your idea or your start-up but you’re not really engaging in meaningful conversations with your customers, so you come off as someone who is just advertising to them. One way to avoid this is to be talking to your customers about what you’re doing and why that benefits them, i.e. give it some context. 8. What attributes do successful start-ups seem to have in common?
I also think that good entrepreneurs know how to use their resources and people around them effectively, so whether that’s delegating some work to a team member, or knowing where a mentor can help them. As an entrepreneur you’re going to get a million different opinions from a million different people telling you to go right and then go left and you have to know how to use that advice really well or to say, ‘Thank you for your advice, but I’m going this way’. 9. How did MoA itself start-up? Are there any learnings there we can pass on to readers? It started out with four board members who noticed that there was a need for people to be re-engaged with the city, so we started with the co-working space above the CBD bar to get more people collaborating together and working around each other. One of the things that we’ve learned along the way is that it takes patience; as much as you want to go out and get everything done, you have to know when to wait for things. We have also learned how to harness strong partnerships and relationships with people – those take a lot of patience to build. The other thing we do here is we test things very often. One of the new things we’re going to try is something called the ‘Fail Club’ where everybody gets together and talks about failures that they’ve learned in business and how we can all learn from that. We’re going to do it during one of our Coffee & Jams in September.

Fishing in a small pond Eugene de Villiers provides some tips for fishing in a small pond: how to snare the catch of the day and most importantly, ensuring it doesn’t get away. What advice do you have for business owners who are new to recruiting staff? You need to be very specific on the profile you are looking for. The more specific you are the more successful your recruiting drives will be. In our organisation we give the heaviest weighting to cultural fit. You can train people in the technical skills required, but no matter how technically capable staff are, if they are not passionate about customer service and going the extra mile, they are simply not going to fit our particular DNA. Don’t rush is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever been given. Don’t be tempted to employ someone because they almost fit the bill, as every time I have done that I have lived to regret it. Sometimes the perfect candidate doesn’t appear immediately, but the cost of employing someone who is not a perfect match is far more than a few months of patience. How do you know if a candidate will be a good fit for your organisation’s culture? New Zealand is a small place and asking referees the right questions is crucial to matching a candidate's profile to your organisation. Because we have refined our profile we can significantly reduce the chances of a bad hire. I also follow my own intuition (built up over many years), and nine times out of 10 I am right. Another measure I use is whether the candidate would be a good fit with our customer base. Might sound basic, but is so often overlooked. Is it difficult to keep good staff? How do you make them happy? Like most business owners, I have learned from trial and error. One of my biggest learnings is that contrary to what many others might say – paying the big dollars doesn’t ensure staff will stay. Retaining good staff is about customising their remuneration package. For example we have a number of working mothers in our team and so for them flexibility of hours is paramount. Staff engagement is also very important. We regularly poll our staff on what makes them

happy to come to work and we know that celebrating milestones is on the happy list. So we regularly have a morning tea or decorate a staff member’s desk with balloons and streamers to celebrate both personal and professional successes.
When you do lose a valued team member, do you have any tips for employers to ensure this doesn’t de motivate the rest of the team? My number one rule is never ever talk negatively about a departing staff member, regardless of whether you can’t wait to see the back of them. Every time we lose a staff member we use this as an opportunity to re-evaluate our team strengths and weaknesses, and to reassess our capabilities. This may influence the profile of our next desired candidate.
Retaining good staff is about customising their remuneration package. For example we have a number of working mothers in our team and so for them flexibility of hours is paramount.
We also have a shared lunch once a week where teams are nominated to prepare the meal, phones are turned off and we enjoy each other’s company without distraction. Whilst the days of Friday afternoon drinks have been toned down in terms of alcohol consumption, we encourage all team members to knock off early on a Friday and enjoy some friendly rivalry over the Foosball table. All of these things are low cost but high impact.

Poaching - what can you do to minimise this? In the same way that the incentive programmes we design for our clients are bespoke, we take those principals and practice what we preach internally. By listening to what is important to our staff then we can reward them accordingly, be it with flexible working hours, staff development opportunities or other meaningful incentives.
Because we believe that our staff are at the top of their game, then chances are our competitors will think so too and so it is inevitable that they may be approached to jump ship. Employers who simply motivate their staff by dollars are far more vulnerable to poaching, as

ways to structure your day By Terri Cluckie
From the moment we are born we enter a routine: eat, sleep, wash, repeat. As time goes on these routines adapt, but even though ‘routine’ itself becomes almost instinctlike, our productivity can still suffer.
3. Comfort is key This might sound a little strange, but nothing makes me feel more empowered than a fresh pair of socks. Why? Because they bring me comfort, keep me warm and if my feet are comfortable on the ground, then so is the rest of my body. With this in mind, I also feel the most confident when I’m wearing clothes that make me feel good. Some jobs have strict dress codes, but if you can find a way to adapt your outfit to something a little more ‘you’, then you might feel more at ease and therefore more productive.
4. Treat yourself (read: bribe yourself)
Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your time in the office or wherever you call ‘work’.
For some people, simply getting through tasks and crossing things off your list isn’t satisfactory enough when powering through work sometimes we need a little bit more. If you can afford to, consider treating yourself at the end of the day, or week, or even per task. It doesn’t need to be anything huge. If bribery is what gets you through the day then so be it.

You may find that breaking up your day into time slots helps you define a purpose for each portion and therefore pushes you to complete the task at hand. This can be done through either separating out your mornings and afternoons for different kinds of work or allocating each hour to something specific. Whatever you do, plan your day first thing in the morning so you know exactly how your day should go.
Sometimes a heavy work load just comes with the job, but even so, you should really look into what is piling up and decide if that’s really your job or not. If you can delegate, do so, and if assignments or tasks keep coming your way that you probably won’t get on to, or perhaps you think someone else would do a better job of, then say so. The power of ‘no’ can sometimes be bigger than the power of ‘yes’.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that teaches you to “work with time, not against it”. By using a timer (usually one shaped like a tomato, hence the name ‘pomodoro’), the technique teaches you to break down work into blocks, usually by 25 minutes at a time, with each being separated by small breaks. The idea is to avoid burnout by working for too long, eliminate distractions by giving yourself the short breaks and to create a better work/life balance by enhancing your productivity at work.
Arguments over a four day work week have had a neat little place on business blogs and news reports for years now, but despite the well-put reasoning around “less time equals more productivity,” they haven’t quite caught on yet. There are certain sectors that these conditions work really well for, but unfortunately not for all. However that doesn’t mean that you can’t adopt the idea behind it to work for yourself. It’s pretty straightforward to understand that the less time you have, the less you will
waste, so give yourself shorter time slots to do each task and you might find yourself speeding up and knocking jobs out the door.
7. Set the scene A little technique that some chefs use to organise their stations before getting to work is called “mise en place”, or “putting in place”. By laying out your “tools” for the job before you start sets you up for success as everything you need is to hand, saving time and clearing mental fuzz.

A visible plan Having a visual aid for the work you have ahead of you not only kicks your butt into getting things done as it stares you in the face, but it also acts as a clear guideline of everything you need to do. Just like various studying techniques, drawing out a list of tasks helps clear your mind as you can focus on one thing at a time without trying to remember everything else.
9. Concentrate on the task at hand We all have various ways of working, but jumping from one task to another without completion can create mental fuzz and stagnate our work. Focus your energy on one task at a time and you might find it helps you get through things quicker.
10. Start small I find that easing myself into the day by focussing on smaller tasks first means that I have a very productive day. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, I don’t have to worry about small housework tasks in between my bigger bits of work – this takes away distractions and means I can be as efficient with my time as possible. Secondly, if I get to work on easier tasks first, it means I don’t spend any time thinking about how large or daunting my next tasks will be – it’s psychological really.

Our daily routine largely shapes our performance, productivity and the accomplishments we make. So logically we want to incorporate a routine into our lives that delivers the best results. While there isn’t one routine that is guaranteed to generate a successful career, some of history’s most influential people centred their working day on very unique patterns, which arguably helped spur on their achievements. Here is how some of the world’s most successful people spent their 24 hours. Perhaps they’ll inspire you to shake up your daily routine for the better:
Winston Churchill When you think of a prime minister’s daily schedule some of the words that come to mind may be hectic, regimented and tiresome. Chances are leisurely doesn’t feature on the list, but a leisurely start to the morning was a predominant aspect of Winston Churchill’s day. The Prime Minister of Great Britain woke at 7:30am and lay in bed for the majority of the morning. He enjoyed breakfast in bed and then read his mail, the national newspapers and dictated letters to his secretaries. At 11am he’d rise for the day, bath and take a leisurely stroll in the garden. His walk was followed by lunch with family and guests. The full three course meal was served at 1pm, which he’d enjoy while socialising well into the afternoon. At 3:30pm lunch was concluded and Winston would retire to his office to work. He’d work for a little over an hour before taking a nap around 5pm, an important part of his routine. Dinner was at 8pm, again enjoyed with family and friends, followed by another hour of work before bed.
Barack Obama If anyone needs a solid routine to help them fit everything into 24 hours it’s the President of the United States. And it seems Barack Obama
has a well organised routine that not only allows him to spend time with his family, but also run a country. At 7am he wakes and heads straight to the White House gym to exercise for an hour. Then he eats breakfast, which has been chosen for him, with his wife and daughters. He reads the newspapers and hits the Oval Office around 9am. In the evening he makes a point of eating dinner with his family before returning to work. Among his nightly responsibilities is leafing through the binder of documents that his staff have asked him to review. Once Michelle goes to bed at 10pm he enjoys some alone time. He watches ESPN, surfs his iPad, reads books, and calls foreign leaders in different time zones, until he finally goes to bed around 1am.
Jack Dorsey Co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Square, Jack Dorsey, has a hectic work schedule. He runs two businesses full time putting in a mammoth 16 hour work day, split evenly between eight hours at each business. He manages to juggle working full time for two companies simultaneously with the help of a very disciplined routine. He themes his working days to stay focused and productive. On Monday at both companies he focuses on management, Tuesday is product development, Wednesday is marketing, communication and growth, Thursday is focused on developers and partnerships, and Friday is culture and recruiting. Jack takes Saturdays off to hike and Sundays are spent on reflection, feedback and getting ready for the rest of the week.

Charles Darwin One of the world’s best known naturalists and geologists, Charles Darwin, made a number of significant contributions to science, which impacted the way we think about the world. His highly innovative work brought about a very dynamic routine filled with exercise and rest. He’d wake at 7am and begin the day with a short walk followed by a solitary breakfast. He began his work day at 8am and stayed extremely focussed, interrupted only by the occasional visit to the snuff jar.

At midday he would head out for another walk with his pet terrier Polly. Charles would then eat lunch, read the newspaper, write letters and then take an afternoon nap. Late afternoon he’d get up and go on his third walk for the day. In the evening he’d rest, while his wife, Emma read to him. For dinner they’d share tea and an egg. Once Emma had gone to bed Charles would stay up reading scientific books and lie awake in bed solving problems until midnight.

LOVEBLOCK Uncorking Erica Crawford’s organic passion By Laura Baker

The parcel of land is peaceful, tranquil and baked in sun. From this elevation, 150 metres above the ocean below, it feels like you can see the end of the earth. The Loveblock vineyard is a little slice of heaven, at least for New Zealand wine industry power couple Erica and Kim Crawford. Following a prolonged hiatus from what they do best, Erica and Kim are back in the game making world class wine, as an infectious love for the craft meant these two wouldn’t stay away forever.
From infancy to fame You’ve probably heard of the wine label Kim Crawford, you may have even enjoyed a drop or two. Loveblock Wines CEO, Erica Crawford was the marketing mogul behind the Kim Crawford brand which shot it and the New Zealand wine industry from infancy to fame within a few short years. Her husband Kim, the namesake for it, is the highly esteemed vintner who produced the product. Originally from South Africa, Erica started her career as a young scientist in cardiac medicine. But when the opportunity arose to make a wine label with her husband she changed tact. With a couple of marketing courses under her belt, a large portion of self taught exporting and marketing skills, and a heavy reliance on instinct, they went into business. Unable to afford land and vineyards of their own back in 1996 didn’t hold Erica back. Her resilient and forthright nature saw her revolutionise the wine production model in New Zealand. They bought fruit from contract growers and set up a ‘virtual winery’, a model that hadn’t previously been successful in New Zealand. Under Erica’s management they pumped out wine on mass, exporting 400,000 cases annually at its peak. They sold the brand just seven years later for an extremely handsome sum. Erica says the buyout couldn’t have come at a better time. “We got to a point in our growth where we couldn’t fund ourselves anymore. We would have had to go to an IPO [initial public offering], take on more shareholders or sell, and so we sold.” And she says put simply, “it was an offer that we couldn’t refuse”. Today Kim Crawford Wines, owned by US company Constellation Wines, is massive. It produces more than a million cases annually and is the biggest selling sauvignon blanc in America and Canada. “The new owners are doing a good job. It is doing fantastically well,” she says.
Back in the game After selling their stake in the business the Crawfords fell off the radar for a few years, quietly investing money in smaller New Zealand
businesses. But when the global financial crisis hit they had to roll up their sleeves and plan their next move. Returning to the industry wasn’t a hard decision to make. “It is the industry we both love - Kim is a winemaker and it’s his passion.” But this time around they have taken a totally different approach, having money, experience and a certain clout in the industry has influenced this, but Erica’s new philosophy and approach to wine making has had the biggest impact. Loveblock is certified organic, made in small quantities, boutique and at a premium price point - everything that the old brand was not. But perhaps the biggest difference is that they now own land, something they never had with Kim Crawford Wines. They are responsible for their two vineyards, Loveblock and Someone’s Darling in Central Otago and it’s a responsibility they take very seriously. From the humble posy of weeds and dandelions which adorn the label, to the much loved and tended certified organic vines at the heart of the operation, everything about this new brand is different. “Earthy, mother, and honest,” Erica says Loveblock is a direct contrast to the former sleek, urban brand of bygone times. Despite being an industry leader, the launch of Loveblock didn’t come without a few pre-launch jitters. Erica says both Kim and her were most definitely nervous, largely because the wine style is so different to what they did before. “We were very nervous to see what sort of reception we were going to receive.” But those nerves were quickly quelled when Loveblock’s five varieties were picked up for distribution by an American distributor, Terlato Wines. “The first thing we did before we even made a drop of wine was find a distribution partner to work with. It took us about three years, but we eventually found the right one and it’s going really well.”

Now two and a half years into business the fruits of their labour are beginning to show. “We are actually ahead of what can ordinarily be expected from a small winery. I think our success is down to our previous relationships. We had three states in America that took direct imports, rather than being channelled through California and that doesn’t just happen.”

Running an organic vineyard implies that no chemical fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides have been used. “That makes you a lot more vulnerable to pests and disease and we have certainly felt the effect of that.”
Erica says when they first entered the industry almost 20 years ago the market was young. “We had to explain where New Zealand is to every offshore person we dealt with, so it had a pioneering feel about it.” That pioneering feel is nothing more than a distant memory in today’s glutted market, but Erica and Kim are still managing to make pioneering moves in the industry, just in a different way.
Loveblock uses a holistic system seeking co-operation with nature and relies on an understanding of the ecological processes to achieve rich, robust soil and plants. It incorporates methods that are centuries old, such as composting to promote biodiversity, a resident population of beneficial insects to control pests and sheep and cows are used to nibble the weeds under the vines.
Loveblock Wine is certified organic by BioGro New Zealand, one of just a handful of wineries in the country to hold this title. “There is a lot of work involved in getting certified and huge commitment and labour of love.” But it was a commitment and an ethical decision Erica was confident she needed to make.
Since converting the vineyard to organic in 2008, Erica says she has noticed an increase of awareness among other wineries and grape growers around organic practises. “There is a change coming about, we’ve seen grape growers reduce the amount of chemical input, moving away from the traditional full chemical method. People are beginning to get it and low impact growing is gaining momentum.
Her awareness of a green, organic lifestyle came about rather abruptly in her early thirties. Our estate can produce some 60,000 cases, unless we buy more land, so that’s where we’ll cap it.”

Josh says HeavenScent uses as many locally produced products as possible, including organic bread, milk and eggs, ethically farmed meats and source locally grown produce. “Our ethos is to offer high quality healthy food made with love.” Pies are still a specialty, with an arsenal of almost 20 delectable seasonal flavours. Celebrating eight decades of service They say the journey is more important than the destination and, while Grahams Funeral Services is celebrating 80 years in business this year, the real story is how they got there. Local cabinetmaker Percy Graham operated Tuakau Cabinetworks, located opposite the railways and livery stables for those travelling to Auckland for the day to park their horses and carts. “As a cabinetmaker, he was asked to make a casket and before long the orders for caskets were rolling in,” Percy’s grandson Mark Graham explains. “With access to horses and carts, all of a sudden he became an undertaker and the business became known as Tuakau Cabinetworks and Undertakers.” It’s an unconventional start to the funeral business, but then it was equally as successful as it was unusual. What’s even more so is that the cabinet making business has evolved into timber and hardware company Tuakau ITM Group run by Mark’s cousin Glenn, a third generation Graham, while Mark – also a third generation Graham – continues to operate Grahams Funeral Services. “We’re proud to have been able to provide that service for that length of time,” Mark says. “Both businesses are still going strong after 80 years.” While the fourth generation of the Graham family are now working within the company,

this particular year is significant, with three generations still actively involved at the same time –Mark’s mother Lynne Graham and his son Jared Graham. While Grahams Funeral Services is still going strong after 80 years, they are no longer undertakers. “We are now funeral directors,” Mark explains.
“Today it’s about assisting people to celebrate a loved one’s life. Although it’s often not as formal as it used to be, people have different ways to farewell their loved ones now, whether it’s a contemporary style, a traditional church or chapel service, or even conducted on a private property, a public park or a beach – funerals are celebrated in a variety of ways these days.
“We’ve adapted and evolved with these changes, becoming event managers to a degree and, in a very caring and professional way, we help people take the first step through the early stages of that grieving process, helping them on a healthy, positive pathway so that, in time, they will be able to move on.” Another key area of change is the rapid rise in cremation, with some choosing not to hold
a service at all and, although a no service cremation is an option via Grahams Funeral Services, Mark believes the service itself plays an integral role in the grieving process. “Funerals are not just about those who have passed, but also for the living,” he says. “There is a lot of value in having a funeral and it’s nice to have that opportunity to celebrate one’s life.”

The company has become more structured as it has matured and we’ve jumped at opportunities as they have arisen.”

I still remember the first box – it was a 600 x 40 x 30 with a $400 sale heading to Australia and I remember thinking, ‘imagine if we could do this every day’,” Peter says. “Now we have 40 foot containers heading to Australia, South Africa, the UK, Canada and all over – it’s an amazing feeling.” The winner of the BDO Food & Beverage Exporter of the Year Award at the Air New Zealand Cargo Auckland Export Awards for 2015, Imake exports some 80 percent of its products. “Today our customers are purchasing $2,000$3,000 worth of product at a time. We have a large number of customers across an equally large amount of currencies. We have a very balanced portfolio and we’re very dominant in our niche – potentially in the top 2-3 in world in that market, so we’re very successful in meeting the needs of that market.”

Peter lists expansion by acquisition in the company’s top successes during the years and the company has purchased more than 10 businesses during its history. “In the home brew space there are a lot of ‘ma and pa’ businesses who want to sell up along way,” Peter says. “We’re in a position to make them good offers and that enables us to improve our business.”

I think it’s a case of it being the right product at the right time as the craft beer scene grows in popularity around the world. “These products are all related to the customer’s desire to make more natural products and maintaining control over what they’re making. We’re in the entertainment space as much as the DIY space. A slice of humble pie Contrary to popular belief, a good pie can be hard to come by. They may be a New Zealand staple, but real quality, cherished pies don’t come in bulk at the supermarket. The family-run pie haven in Albany, Pioneer Pie Co., has been a staple in the community since it opened its doors in 2012. Owners Tyrone and Carla Campbell, specialise in hand-crafted pies of all flavours and use only the finest ingredients. They offer a range of dietary options such as gluten free and dairy free and source their chicken from Hawke’s Bay farm, Bostocks, and their pork from Korkers, while also using organic ingredients where possible. The couple have three children under the age of five so are always very conscious about the food they make at home and in the café. “We want to serve to the customers only what we’d give to the kids,” Tyrone says. The menu hosts a delectable selection making the task of choosing nigh impossible – but there are of course best sellers: the caramalised pork belly, kumara and apple, the roast chicken, mushroom and tarragon, and the classics: the mince and cheese and steak and cheese. The hand crafted free-range English recipe sausage rolls are also “real stars of the show”.
A much needed change The business hasn’t always been known as Pioneer Pie Co. In fact, they haven’t always specialised in pies either. Before 2014, their premises on Dairy Flat Highway was known as Funky Chicken Café and sold breakfasts, filled rolls and pies. Although the business was a success in that customers kept coming back and enjoyed the food, supplying such a wide variety started to take its toll on Tyrone and Carla and before long they were faced with a decision: close down or find another way. Not ones to give up so easily, the couple decided to re-focus and listen to what the customers really wanted. The pies. And so, after a much needed rebrand, Pioneer Pie Co. was formed. It’s no real surprise though that the business is doing so well. Aside from the fact that their produce is simply unique, Tyrone has always had an entrepreneurial side. When he was 12 years old he started up his own car wash business – “a good little earner” – and kept it going until leaving school a few years later.
After finishing school with no qualifications, he studied a butchery apprenticeship, which now provides him with inspiration for his recipes. During his apprenticeship he travelled around New Zealand with a friend and vowed that he would travel even more once he had his qualifications. And so it wasn’t long until he headed across the world before landing in Europe. While there he worked for a sports events company, an experience he brought home with him in 2008 when he set up his own business, Global Games, which runs some of New Zealand’s biggest junior sports events for children between the ages of eight and 14.
Only just the beginning With two businesses under his wing and a young family to provide for, ‘busy’ would be an understatement for Tyrone. Although Pioneer Pie Co. is doing well, he is quick to explain the hard work behind the scenes.
Late last year the company took on two business partners, Gus and Siri, who have helped Tyrone and Carla stay grounded while expanding the business, they both bring different skill sets that have helped drive the business in new directions. They also hired a general manager and an operations manager who have been brought in to allow Tyrone to focus on taking the business forward, while the day to day running of the café continues to thrive. So while expansion is already happening, Tyrone makes it clear that their roots will always be firmly planted in the ground. “We don’t want to be a big franchise and have multiple stores around the country. We just want to have maybe a couple of other stores… once we move into the mainstream, our production will lose that authenticity and also that quality to the product.”
“On that success, we’ve kind of got to a base camp. You know, we are only just beginning the journey. What we’ve got now, for me, is only the start.” This start though has already brought the team great success. For the past 12 months they have expanded the availability of their pies into other niche cafés – something that was purely customer driven. They also tour the country visiting various food shows and markets.
The trajectory is pretty clear for Pioneer Pie Co. and there is no doubt it’s in good hands. Tyrone and Carla’s hopes to expand into Wellington and Christchurch are under way, and if the original café in Albany is anything to go by, we’re all in for a treat. AT

Newmarket’s finest Chinese fare Great businesses are the ones that step out of the box to do things that little bit differently. The best businesses are the ones with a good story behind them. Newmarket restaurant Pearl Garden – which is celebrating 40 years in business – has both. Back in 1975 an innovative and energetic ‘Mama Kan’ (Pauline) started what was then a small intimate restaurant with eight tables, 30 plates and 30 bowls. “When she started the business, there weren’t many Chinese restaurants around,” Pauline’s daughter in law Mabel Kan explains. “In the early days, Chinese restaurants were all about Chop Suey. A cooking teacher from Hong Kong, she wanted to introduce a more refined cuisine to the area, with a variety of dumpling delicacies and wok inspired specialties, reminiscent of her own home cooking.” The business, which started life in a little shop on Broadway, has seen a lot of changes over the years. “We moved into a premises around the corner from there, underneath where we are now,” Mabel says.

The scheme covers structural timber quality, in terms of physical properties (strength and stiffness), and durability. Independent auditors are a critical part of the TQS. They audit timber production and sample and test timber to ensure that standards for physical properties and preservative treatment are being achieved. The auditors themselves are accredited to ensure that their systems and processes are compliant with the rules of the TQS.

The Landscape Industries Association of New Zealand, known as Landscaping New Zealand, is an association of landscaping professionals who choose to differentiate themselves from the masses and show their commitment to professional practice. As an accredited member of Landscaping New Zealand, businesses have been put through a rigorous accreditation process to allow them to use the Landscaping New Zealand brand. The accreditation process not only accesses skill, but also business practices. These include contracts, insurance and occupational health and safety policies. Credit checks are also carried out. “My father Shyam and I started the business in 2004,” Shyamal explains of the pair’s foray into the windows and doors industry. “My uncle owns a kitchen business and he was struggling to find good aluminium suppliers, so he approached us and suggested we start the business.” Within a month the pair were considering closing up shop, but after sticking to their guns and carrying on, the team of two began to grow, becoming a team of four and then soon after, a team of six. “Along with our nationwide licensees we’re also in Fiji, the UK and we’re about to move into the Thailand market. People outside of New Zealand have seen this product and, with nobody else doing the same thing, they want to work with this product.”
