Letting it sink in One way for your kitchen to make a long-lasting impression is with a feature sink. “Sinks have taken on more of a design element within the kitchen space. It used to be that stainless steel was the option with the odd black and white. “Now, with the incorporation of things like gold and copper tapware and waste kits, people might do accents within the sinks,” Lauren says.
Build & Renovate Today chats with Misco Joinery head designer, Lauren Martin about what’s dominating kitchen design trends for 2021.
With hopes of overseas adventures cast aside, people are finding themselves with a bunch of cash they don’t know what to do with. The result? Both new and old homeowners alike are looking to sink money into the most important investment of people’s lives – their homes. “It’s a very interesting market at the moment because people are really putting a great deal of thought and consideration into their kitchen spaces. The market is hot,” Lauren says. “Clients are coming to us having carried out a lot more research. They are creating their own spaces. There’s some gorgeous products on the market right now to help them do this.” These products range from matte blacks made from chalkboard-like material to fingerprint-resistant colours. As a real tactile person, Lauren says it’s great seeing that transcribe over to kitchens as these products are practical, too.
Staying handy A small change that can transform the whole look of the kitchen? Look no further – handles are making waves for good reason. “There are some stunning handles on the market, making them a real feature of the kitchen. Of course, a favourite is still the profile handles, or the handles that look like they disappear,” Lauren says.
“Instead of getting that dark black line along the laminate, it makes it look like it’s seamless. It has been and is excellent for entry level homes if their budget only allows for a laminate benchtop.
“Some examples of this include allblack sinks with copper tapware or white sinks with gold tapware.” To take a look at Misco Joinery’s gorgeous options for your kitchen, visit: www.misco.co.nz or call the showroom on (03) 384 4384.
“I love the beautiful, handmade handles that are available. On trend at the moment are big circles – and when you open the cupboards, they cut open like a half moon.”
Keeping it edgy Another trend that’s coming back in full force – laminate, also known as Formica, countertops. “A laminate benchtop has had a bit of a comeback. The reason being is they now use ABS edging, which is a matching edge tape,” Lauren says. ABS – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene – is a highly resistant laminate banding, known for its abrasion- and impact-resistant properties. It’s thermal-resistant and eco-friendly, too. www.buildandrenovate.co.nz B&R | 5

The winner of 2020 New Zealand Architecture Awards – Housing, #3 by Studio2 Architects, seamlessly interweaves the different living zones and spaces to create new memories and connections.
This Remuera home is a contemporary dwelling inspired by mid-century style. Framed by a lush garden environment, the three-level building’s open spaces still have plenty of privacy for its inhabitants. The New Zealand Institute of Architects says, “The jury described the house, designed by the architect for his own family and featuring a parents’ wing, children’s tower and common living areas, as an ‘ordered, flexible and cheerful’ arrangement of spaces that are both dedicated and complementary.” Images by Simon Devitt.

70 years of quality, style and high performance Quality, style and high performance never go out of fashion. There is only one name that has, for seven decades, consistently delivered all three when it comes to housing. And that name is Lockwood Homes. Combining the natural advantages of solid wood construction with a range of designs from the classic to the contemporary, Lockwood has proudly produced homes and commercial buildings since 1951. The real testament to quality, style and performance is that Lockwood buildings, whether in Central Otago or the tropical South Pacific, have stood the test of time, taking the toll of the years in their stride. Every Lockwood home is created on principles and fundamentals of ‘Good Design’:
simple, thoughtful, beautiful and effortlessly functional. “Avoiding fads and trends, we focus on details contributing to durability rather than those leading to maintenance overheads.” Says Managing Director, Andrew La Grouw. “For us at Lockwood Homes, every building is an embodiment of our brand. The name ‘Lockwood’ is your guarantee of a home built on integrity, family values and a reputation for outstanding quality.” Using a uniquely manufactured building system, every Lockwood starts out in the Rotorua factory as sustainably sourced Radiata Pine. A process of meticulous engineering and precision manufacturing results in precut components delivered directly to site. At the job site,
Lockwood components and joinery are locked together using a patented aluminium ‘X’ profiles and laterally braced by spring-loaded tie rods, making for a resilient structure that flexes under force. Detail is paramount. Nothing is arbitrary or left to chance, with care and accuracy in the design and manufacturing process resulting in the highest standard of finished homes. Because it is solid wood, a Lockwood offers unique advantages, including natural earthquake and extreme weather resistance. Thermal efficiency comes as part of the package; wood ‘breathes’, contributing to air circulation and a warm, dry home. It also forms a natural insulating layer (beefed up by insulation sandwiched between solid timber) delivering energy
efficiency 50% greater than the NZBC requirements for wooden homes. The use of timber in construction is also an eco-smart choice. When trees are responsibly harvested, the carbon is locked in the wood and remains there for the life of the home. Wood also does something else better than just about any other construction material. It handles the knocks and bumps of daily living without damage, avoiding many maintenance and redecorating tasks, and leaving Lockwood homeowners with more time and money for quality living. Slice
and dice By Claire Wright
If you have an open plan home but yearn to separate sections for specific purposes, then multifunctional zones might be the solution for you. In a shift we haven’t seen in decades, people yearn to transform their open plan homes into something more specific. Multifunctional zones, also known as the broken-plan, have all the benefits of open plan living – better air flow, more light and shared living – but with more structure.
Open plan living has dominated interior architecture since the 1970s, starting with rooms without doors and eventually the abolition of walls for a giant multipurpose space. This was in stark contrast to architecture in the pre-World War II era, with the main hallway acting as the artery with specific rooms branching off of it – the dining room, the kitchen, the piano room and more. Since then, we never really had a chance to go back. The open
floor plan allows homeowners to change their space according to their changing needs, which is why it has dominated residential architecture for half a century. And then a shift forced us to reexamine our homes spaces: COVID-19. During lockdown, four in 10 Kiwis worked from home at some point during 2020 – unprecedented levels here in New Zealand.
Use rugs to distinguish separate spaces A subtle way to distinguish separate zones from each other is to use area rugs, removing the need to install physical barriers. Not only that, but it can give your house a homier feel. Contrast materials for a different look
With so much time at home, we couldn’t help but think of ways to change our homes to suit our ever-evolving needs. Multifunctional zones, acting as individual areas within an open plan space, can give our brains a much-needed break by categorising our homes into spaces specifically for rest or for work. Here are some solutions to divvy up your open plan spaces. Fold out a partition Using a decorative fold out screen, you can literally divide the space up while giving the room a bit of character and artistic flair.
From wood panels to white walls, using contrasting materials to separate spaces is a clever way to define the lines between different zones. Wallpaper spaces for visual barriers Visually separate spaces by wallpapering specific corners, whether you want a bar area or a cosy spot to have some alone time. However you do it, whether with more physical décor or with different wall and ceiling materials, creating separate zones in your home can transform how you live and interact with your space.

Interior Design
Going your own way
An aesthetic that reflects you entirely By Polly Nichols
By now we’re all too familiar with the concept of minimalism – and it’s time to put it to rest. Trends go back and forth between extremes so as we turn away from minimalism, we look to maximalism.
Key takeaways for creating a maximalist look Anchor the space – use your favourite piece of décor to curate your collection and create a colour palette.
Minimalism utilises empty spaces to draw attention to feature pieces. Décor is curated to show style and personality with as few pieces as possible. Think of it as the essentials to your style.
Think contrast – when arranging décor consider their different colours and textures to break up any monotonous elements in your space. Stay true to you – chasing the latest trends can easily turn a maximalist space into a total mess. When you’re true to yourself you’ll create a timeless look.
The issue with minimalism is that it comes across as sterile and it’s reminiscent of the sort of home staging you’d encounter when buying a house. Remember that the key to home staging is to create a sense of anonymity so anyone can imagine living in your home.
Of course, your anchor piece doesn’t have to be a painting – it can be anything you can build a space around which can range from a figurine that fits in your hand to a tapestry that takes up a whole wall.
Minimalism has its time and place, however, along with feeling sterile, minimalism is easily muddled with everyday living. Also, there’s a point where empty spaces feel more like stylistic voids. If you’re looking to crawl out of your own creative abyss, maximalism is the next new trend to consider. Unlike minimalism, maximalism utilises numerous pieces which can speak to the many dimensions of your style. Maximalism is filling your space with décor, layers of colours, patterns and textures. You can think of it as a way to display the innerworkings of your mind, an exhibit of sorts. This aesthetic allows you to surround yourself with your favourite things while also displaying them for everyone else to enjoy. Instead of one standout feature as a focal point in a space, patterns textures, fabrics and materials are combined to create an engaging, coordinated look.
“
Something else you should keep in mind is contrast. When arranging décor consider their different colours and textures to break up any monotonous elements in the space.
Maximalism is filling your space with décor, layers of colours, patterns and textures. You can think of it as a way to display the innerworkings of your mind — an exhibit of sorts. Creating the look for yourself With all there is to organise, it’s easy to make a mess of maximalism. The secret to getting the look is by anchoring your space with a unifying element. For example, if you have a painting you can pick and pull colours,
”
textures and elements from it to curate the items you fill your space with and to create your colour palette.
The décor and paint colours you choose will all blend together no matter how eclectic your collection might seem because the painting holds the space together.
Don’t worry if one piece doesn’t work in a particular space because it just might work in a another. Just as there are different functions and components to your mind, your entire home provides different lighting and functions which also bring out different aspects of your personality. Ultimately, staying true to your style and what you like will keep you on track to creating a successful, maximalist space. Afterall, individual people are collections of ideas, beliefs and histories which our homes should reflect.

Inside style By Georgina Oldfield
When it comes to décor style, it’s easy to get caught up in all the different options without a clear idea of where you’re heading, but without some advice to really help with fine tuning your look, where do you even begin?
As interior designers Angelique Armstrong and Anna Cuthbert say, sometimes you need to dig a little deeper to find your inspiration. Anna Cuthbert, director of Cuthbert Interiors, is passionate about interior design. Having completed interior design projects all over New Zealand and around the world, Anna has the knowledge and expertise when it comes to all things interiors. So what’s her top tip for finding your decorating style? “Only keep the things that make you smile – work out what you don’t like and focus on what you do, and then remove anything in your house that you feel like you are no longer connecting with,” Anna says. Along with working out what brings you the most joy, Anna also recommends looking at the colours that you find yourself most drawn towards. “If you’re choosing lots of blues you may end up going for a nautical kind of theme, if you’re looking at greens it maybe fresher and have a more eclectic look, if you’re going down the
route of lots of jewel-like colours then you’re looking for a more luxurious feel.” Like Anna, Armstrong Interiors director Angelique Armstrong is passionate about interiors. Founding Armstrong Interiors in 2014, Angelique has an innate sensitivity to the arts, and an instinctive feel for textiles, colour and spatial authenticity. Specialising in kitchen and bathroom design, Angelique’s strength lies in layering interiors down to the final detail, always striking a balance between functional and beautiful. When it comes to finding your décor style, Angelique advises getting as much inspiration as you can from magazines and your favourite interior designers. “If you’re looking to do a new kitchen, Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly is really good, as well as National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), which we are a member of. “While dark and moody has been trending for the last few years, looking into 2021, the colour palette has been changing from the darker colours. “Like fashion there will be a move away from the dark house interiors, and we’re going into lighter cream, as cream is currently forecasted to be one of the hot colours, to bring in more light, coming through in the next few years.”

In the Garden
The autumn garden Preparing your patch for springtime success By Polly Nichols
“
Even though summer is over, the garden work isn’t! As tempting as it is to blunder through the garden, it’s better to take a moment and carefully plan for springtime success.
Like dahlias, autumn is the perfect time to dead head roses and hydrangeas. Depending on the plant and how early in autumn you do this, sometimes new buds will appear after dead heading, extending the flowering period.
Making space for new plants
If you still have springtime daffodils or other bulbs and tubers sitting in your garden, now is the time to store them away for the winter. Removing and storing bulbs and tubers is easy to do and will prevent them from going into shock and rotting from cold winter weather.
”
Other bulbs and tubers might need more time in the ground before removal such as dahlias. You can extend the flowering period for your dahlias by clipping just beneath the flower; this is often referred to as dead heading.
Brimming with yellow, orange and red leaves, when people think of autumn, they often think of autumn leaves. However, if you want to bring different colours into your autumn garden, Kings Plant Barn suggests planting these flowers:
You will know that bulbs and tubers are ready for removal when the plant stops flowering and the stem and leaves brown off and die. Then, it can be removed from the soil and left out to dry before trimming the roots and stem and storing the bulb or tuber. When removing old plants from your garden, be sure to also remove weeds and any seeds they leave behind. This is to ensure weeds don’t take advantage of the hospitable environment you’ll create and that your next flowerbed has the best start it can. If you’re looking to add a bit of colour to your garden, Kings Plant Barn suggests planting flowers like pansies, chrysanthemums, violas, dianthus, calendula, and alyssum. After planting your new seeds or plants into their garden bed, tuck them in with a covering of compost or mulch. Compost and mulch are helpful in regulating
• Pansies • Alyssum • Chrysanthemum • Dianthus • Calendula • Violas.
temperature in colder months and preventing birds and other animals from snacking on seeds.
Caring for mature plants Year-round plants need love too, especially after the water restrictions this summer. Although your mature plants might have stopped flowering, next summer will have a better outcome with regular care throughout the year. Like dahlias, autumn is the perfect time to dead head roses and
hydrangeas. Depending on the plant and how early in autumn you do this, sometimes new buds will appear after dead heading, extending the flowering period. Cutting too far from the flower could constitute for pruning which can make the plant vulnerable to frost and cold temperatures. This is because pruning spurs plants into regrowth instead of preservation. Old flowers can go straight into your compost heap. However, if you had trouble with pests, mould
or fungus, it’s better that you toss the old flowers and clippings straight into the green bin to avoid compromising your compost heap and the rest of your garden. Similar to what you would do to care for new plants in your garden, weed and clear out any debris that might be blocking your view of the base of your plants. Be sure that the roots and base of your plants are covered in soil by adding new soil as needed. Lastly, cover with compost or mulch to regulate moisture and to keep plants warm in colder months.

If you just wing each interview, the direction, tone and outcome of each conversation can vary wildly, making it more difficult to compare candidates to each other. The outcome of this can be that, despite spending all that time interviewing people, to a certain extent, you’re still none the wiser. Then, the chances are, when it comes to deciding who to hire, you’re going to go with your gut, as you won’t reliably be able to compare one answer to another because you didn’t ask each candidate a few standard questions you can compare them by. So, a little planning can go a long way towards helping you make an informed and considered choice of who to hire, as opposed to just sitting down with each individuals, having a completely random chat, and then hoping you get it right.
Mistake 2
- OVERVALUING EXPERIENCE
It is risky to bet too heavily on how much experience a person has, when there are so many factors that determine whether someone will be successful in the role and a good fit for your organisation. An applicant’s skills, knowledge, aptitude and personality all factor into the equation. Because experience is a tangible and measurable component, it is very easy to overvalue it above less easily measurable factors such as intelligence, drive, and other components of raw talent. Experience accumulates with time in the role and skills can be learned and acquired.
Hiring new employees is not an easy process. You’ve got to wade through a mountain of applications, weed out the few you’re interested in and then interview all the candidates – all while still running your company. But if you want your company to grow, you need to hire the right people. You need people that are not only right for the now but can also help you move the business towards bigger and better things in the future. This is especially so for smaller businesses and startups because they have fewer employees and a limited income with which to work. For these companies every single dollar they spend on finding and hiring an employee can affect their longer term success, meaning it’s vital that they avoid making major mistakes while hiring. But the trouble is that running a small business is hard work and there often simply isn’t the time to commit to a thorough hiring process; and as result, corners get cut. The good news is that your competitors are probably making these mistakes whilst hiring as well. This means there’s an opportunity for you to seize; to waste less time and money by hiring right so you can get back to running your company.
Mistake 1
- NOT HAVING AN INTERVIEW PLAN
The single biggest hiring mistake small business owners make is winging it or not having an interview plan. At best they’ll have a few questions written down on a piece of paper, but little else. You need to treat an interview like a deductive science. You’ve sorted through all the resumes and selected the best individuals to be interviewed – but now you need a better way of evaluating their suitability for the role than just having a chat and going with your gut. You achieve this by having an interview plan. First – decide what questions are the most important, and ask them to each candidate.
Your next great employee might be someone with limited experience, but who has fantastic aptitude and flexibility. Placing too much stock on a heavy list of qualifications in your job description, or only considering applicants with x amount of experience and not considering other factors, means you might be turning a blindeye to someone better suited to the role and your company’s culture. However, this is a double-edged sword and there is a flip side. If you’re looking to hire someone without any experience in the hope of finding someone cheaper – you might be buying into a false economy. Ignoring a candidate with what you consider to be necessary experience in the hope of saving a few thousand dollars a year by hiring an unproven person, might not actually save you anything, due to the amount of on-the-job training and potentially decreased productivity the less experienced employee will deliver. So, as with all aspects of running your business, you need to find a balance. But it definitely pays to consider more than just the experience a candidate comes with. You want someone with the potential to grow into the perfect for your company.
Mistake 3
- ASSUMING THE HIRING PROCESS ENDS ONCE THEY’RE HIRED
This is a common mistake many small business owners make. An employee’s productivity is comprised of 50 percent ability [the reasons you hired them], and 50 percent of what happens once they’re in the workplace. So conducting a good interview, offering that promising person the job and them saying ‘yes’ is only half the task. Employees need to be properly induced and introduced to your company, well trained and supported. It doesn’t matter how impressed you are with someone’s potential – poor training, insufficient access to resources, and little feedback will add up to poor job satisfaction and this will impact their performance. So recruitment doesn’t stop at the ‘welcome aboard’ handshake – you need to make sure they are introduced, trained and supported every step of the way.

Southern Institue of Technology
Free Training Opportunities –
Enrol at SIT for 2021 www.sit.ac.nz/Fees-Enrolments/ TTAF-No-Fees
2020 has been a very different sort of year for most New Zealanders, but for those wanting to study or retrain, it’s turned out to be the silver lining of the COVID-19 cloud. There’s never been a better time than right now to enrol at Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) and take advantage of free training opportunities. Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund (TTAF) free training initiative is the Government’s response to help support the recovery of New Zealand’s Covid-impacted economy, specifically focusing on industries with predicted skill shortages.
Doug Rodgers is Head of Faculty – Trades and Technology, at SIT, and says now is the time to enrol and train for a new career. “With the Government’s investment and focus on infrastructure in response to COVID-19, there are many opportunities for retraining and getting into a high-paying career in the construction and building industry.” This is the real thing – gain a new qualification and launch a new career without incurring a hefty student loan! Some of SIT’s most popular programmes are available to study now, with no course costs under TTAF, at their Invercargill, Christchurch and Queenstown campuses:
Invercargill Campus • New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology • New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Quantity Surveying) (Level 6) • New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil Engineering major) 28 | B&R
Zero Fees and Bachelors’ Programmes The following programmes are available under the Zero Fees Scheme at SIT’s Invercargill campus: • Bachelor of Construction (L7) (with strands in Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Construction Management).
• National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) • New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) – Carpentry • New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) – Joinery As an added bonus, students enrolling for full-time training at SIT Invercargill under TTAF, are also eligible for up to 40 weeks of accommodation bursaries, with FREE accommodation at a SIT unit/apartment OR $100 per week paid out towards accommodation expenses.
“Because of the different range in ages, everyone has something to contribute and knowledge is shared,” he said. The New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology is available to study in 2021 under TTAF. Look out for other programmes with the TTAF logo, on the SIT website: • New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering major) • New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory
Christchurch and Queenstown Campuses
• New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering
New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) – Carpentry
• New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Vehicle Operator)
SIT student Damian Mitchell has just completed his Diploma in Architectural Technology, and he found the smaller class numbers have suited his learning style.
• New Zealand Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Trade Assistant)
He said the tutors are readily available to answer questions and they come from a relevant work force, so they have practical ‘hands-on’ knowledge to pass on to the students. He’s appreciated the diversity in the class and how ideas are shared as well.
www.buildandrenovate.co.nz
• New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) with strand in Mental Health and Addiction Support • New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) with strand in Social Services.
• Bachelor of Engineering Technology (L7) (Civil Engineering) • Bachelor of Architectural Technology (L7). Mr Rodgers specifically mentioned two stand-out degrees at SIT Invercargill campus which have a lot to offer students who want to pursue careers in architecture or engineering. “The Bachelor of Architectural Technology is the only degree of its kind in NZ. The focus of this degree is not only architectural design but is targeted specifically at identified industry needs – strong technical skills, construction knowledge and graduates who are agile and have a broad range of skills.” He described the Bachelor of Engineering Technology as “a unique, industry-designed degree”. The programme is unique in that students learn more than one discipline in-depth until the third year, and have more skills available for an employer. This approach is a direct result of industry consultation and employer feedback, he said. Storage Solutions
Intelligent design By Georgina Oldfield
As more people are choosing to live a life with less, it’s important that the spaces in your home are best utilised to help achieve this.
“A lot of it also comes down to the person’s lifestyle – for example, some people come to me and say I’ve got a lot of things from my travels that we would like to put on display, so then we sort of customise shelving around that, or they may cook a lot and want their appliances easily accessible, but still to look tidy.
Comber and Comber designer, Ashleigh Jones has always been obsessed with all things design and style.
“It’s about working out what works best for you and your lifestyle,” Ashleigh says.
But what are some ways you can ensure you’re making the most of the storage space in your home without over-complicating things?
Specialising in kitchens, she always considers several elements of interest which can be styled to reflect the individuality of her clients. When it comes to making the most of the kitchen space in the home, her number one tip is to display what you use most regularly and store away what you don’t. Open shelving is a good option to store the items that you want on display, or built-in cabinetry, rather than lots of cupboards to make more of a feature out of your storage, Ashleigh says. “That way you’re hiding it away but making it look classy at the same time.”
Our passion has always been design Comber and Comber has a long history of providing professional interior and exterior design solutions for Christchurch homes and businesses, as well as connecting with clients from a variety of widespread locations. “There can be so much work involved that often people don’t know where to start. We help our clients by giving them the correct support and information needed to make informed decisions and get the most out of each space.” - Paula Comber, director
For the items that you don’t use as often and want to store away, custom joinery can be a really good option. For other rooms of the house, Ashleigh says it all depends on whether it’s a new build or a renovation that you are working with. With a new build you can make sure that you’ve got an attic or you can find ways to utilise the ceiling. For a renovation, using archives like dead space where you can put some cabinetry or ensure you have shelves built in is a good way to make sure you’re utilising the space, Ashleigh says. www.buildandrenovate.co.nz B&R | 31

Tapping into the
top trends
Innovative or sophisticated, statement or subdued, choosing tapware is a personal choice that takes time and consideration.
Whether undertaking a complete home renovation, or replacing bathroom and kitchen fixtures, the latest trends and tips from leading tapware and shower brand, Methven, can help narrow down those difficult decisions.
Mixing metals Metal has been an increasingly prominent trend in interior design for the past few years which is here to stay.
the basin itself. If the spout is too long or too short, it can result in water splashing out of the basin. Ideally, water should be directed towards the waste/drain. Getting this marriage of basin drain and spout length right can be troublesome, so look for mixers and spouts which have adjustable stream aerators. These allow an extra bit of water direction control to reduce the chance of splashing.
Integrating glamour with an industrial touch, metals reflect light and inject a sense of superior style. Graphite is also becoming a more popular interior finish, enhancing a variety of design styles. Sleek metallic tones provide a great contrast to vibrant colours and patterns, exuding modernity. The Methven Tūroa collection is now available in a PVD finish in gun metal black, graphite and gold, that accentuates the refined design, while championing durability and function. Black is back Black is making a comeback and will be a must-have for details and fixtures within bathrooms and kitchens. Working well with a variety of shades and colours, black can be paired with vibrant colours to make a bold statement. Matte surfaces are on the rise, meaning the modern and sophisticated Methven Aio Basin Mixer can work perfectly in contemporary complement to any style.
Changing shapes While sharp, geometric forms have ruled interior spaces in the past couple of years, design trends are now shifting toward soft curves, and rounded edges. This trend inspires the feeling of comfort, and encompasses a sense of welcome. Embracing this idea of elegant, rounded shapes, and blurring the lines between hard and round edges, the Methven Minimalist Gooseneck Sink Mixer features intersecting cylinders blended with strict geometry, enhancing any room with its graceful forms.
For those who don’t want to abandon the geometric trend completely, the Methven Waipori Basin Mixer takes traditional shapes and subtly tapers them for the modern bathroom. Perfect pairings A free-standing basin will require either a wall mounted tapware set or a hob (deck) mounted hirise tap. A wall mounted tapware set can be a great way to keep your vanity bench top clear and allow space for other items. Consider the spout length of the tapware selected in regards to
Tap into the look first The basin mixer is typically the foundation of a tapware collection. Once you are happy with this choice, select your shower set, towel rings, soap dishes and other accessories from the same range to complete your bathroom and create a cohesive look. When planning on updating your fixtures, gather options together, take your time and do your research. Create a mood board or a scrapbook of design ideas and products. Methven products are available from most plumbing and bathroom stores nationwide. For more information, please got to: www.methven.com.

Autumn fixings
Just as painting is dependent on temperature and moisture levels, plastering is even more so. It’s important to get it right the first time so any wall applications going over the plaster looks its best. That’s why when it comes to the big plastering jobs it’s best to call in the professionals like Finesse Paint & Decorating.
We might only just be dipping our toes into autumn, but now is the time to get to those renovations you’ve been meaning to so you’re not scrambling in winter.
Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but let’s not get lost in all that autumn has to offer – there’s too much to do before winter sets in. Because of the mild weather we experience in autumn, it’s the perfect time to work on weather dependent renovations around the home.
“ Painting and plastering Autumn is a great time to get to the painting projects you’ve been meaning to around the house. Summer is difficult for painting because the higher temperatures and direct sunlight can make for uneven drying times. Winter is tricky because rainy weather increases air moisture which interferes with drying. However, autumn weather is comparably temperate, which allows for paint to dry evenly and in a timely manner. For those reasons, autumn might be your last opportunity to take on large painting projects.

Roof repair and maintenance
”
Out of sight, out of mind – that goes for many parts of the home including the roof. Roof maintenance involves more than just clearing out gutters and downspouts. Sometimes we don’t realise something’s wrong with the roof until it’s too late and the damage is already done. That’s why regular roof cleaning is important to ensure your roof achieves its full lifespan. Roofing professionals like Canterbury Roof Painting can inspect your roof, draw up a quote which outlines all that needs to be done to get your roof to tip top shape. Roofing professionals frequently find mould, rust, flaking paint and the like which can all lead to compounding issues, especially as we head into rainy weather. Some work that might need to be done on your roof can range from a quick clean to roof resurfacing or replacement.

Door and window upgrade New Zealand homes have made a reputation for themselves as being cold, damp and draught ridden which impacts the comfort and well-being of everyone in the home – particularly in the winter months.

Thankfully, according to Building Performance, building consents aren’t required when replacing exterior doors and windows 15 years old or older. However, if the door or window in question is less than 15 years old, then the quality of the door or window should be further investigated.
Sometimes gaps occur because weather stripping or door sweeps need replacing. Other times it’s because the door or window succumbed to rot or was somehow damaged, therefore, it no longer fits its frame. When replacing a door or window, consider upgrading to a thermally broken door or window frame. ‘Thermally broken’ simply means that cold and heat are not conducted through the frame. Of course, there’s always something that needs doing when you own a home. Hopefully this autumn you’re able to get to everything you need to before winter sets in. Sitting in your cosy home, you’ll be glad you did.

Property Investment
Jumping head first into property investment The Christchurch property market remains one of the healthiest in the country, with housing affordability performing well compared to other major cities.
The city offers quality of life, fantastic amenities and decent job opportunities. CoreLogic’s head of research, Nick Goodall, commented on Stuff, “It is clear that New Zealanders are looking towards property as a safe investment and the most attractive asset for wealth accumulation”. Christchurch had 3.1 percent growth, exceeding other main centres, with only Hamilton coming close with 2.9 percent growth. We are not travelling overseas and with interest rates at all-time lows, why would we have our money in the bank?
Most banks are offering interest rates of 2.29 percent down from 2.49 percent. New Zealand is home to just under one million baby boomers (980,000 or 23 percent of the population). This means a lot of people heading rapidly toward retirement with many relying on some sort of investment to top up the government superannuation If you are looking to purchase an investment property – especially for the first time – align yourself with people with investment experience. Do your research and ensure you have an accountant, lawyer and mortgage broker experienced in property investment. With many new laws coming into force, landlords must remain fully informed. From December 1, 2020 a compliance certificate stating the current level of compliance must be included in any new or
renewed tenancy agreements, or any fixed term agreements that end before the Healthy Homes compliance dates. This certificate must detail if the property complies and, if it doesn’t, it must state when and how it will comply by the required date. A copy of the compliance statement can be found on the Tenancy Services website: www.tenancy.govt.nz.
Many countries require landlords to be certified and NZPIF has created an Education Programme for Self-Managing Landlords – this popular programme is free for members. Our aim is to educate, inform and support people through their property investment journey, so please come along and connect with us at one of our upcoming events. Association benefits and event details can be found on our website: www.cpia.nz.

Landscapes of
distinction The annual Landscapes of Distinction Awards are back this year and expected to be bigger than ever.
With more than 80 entries, the feedback from the judges is the standard of work, the innovation and scope of the entries this year is very high, Registered Master Landscapers chief executive officer, Janine Scott says. “Recognising outstanding performance in landscaping practice, the annual Landscapes of Distinction Awards are the highest accolade of professional recognition in the industry.” Now in their third decade, the awards shine a light on the very best projects by New Zealand’s landscape professionals and help to showcase the best in landscape design and construction, raising profiles of businesses and recognising the outstanding professional excellence of their members, Janine says. They have continued to grow in importance year on year and are now recognized as the premier event on the landscape calendar, Janine says. 42 | B&R
This year there are 18 entry category choices across residential, commercial and revegetation works and people are able to enter one or multiple entries into as many categories as they choose. The awards will be held on the 13th of March in Christchurch and the public will also be able to have their say in the newly created People’s Choice Award category, Janine says. "Looking at the entries this year we are seeing an increase in innovative design with more clients creating unique environments that extend from the interior of the homes to the outdoors." Outdoor fires and lighting as a feature are also becoming a popular choice, Janine says. “It truly is a great night when our industry comes together to recognise and celebrate excellence in our industry and after the challenges of 2020, one that is very much looked forward too.”

What the judges look for The judges look for the highest standards within the landscape projects submitted, whether the focus is on construction, design, planting or maintenance. Innovative approaches, unusual solutions to overcoming a problem and exceptional levels of craft skills are all highly valued. The judges look to assess the spatial and aesthetic qualities of the project, material selections, construction methods, attention to detailing and maintenance standard, as applicable to the different categories. Previously known as Landscaping New Zealand (LIANZ), Registered Master Landscapers have officially represented the New Zealand landscaping industry since 1985 with a mission to promote professionalism and quality trade practice. “Our change of name reflects the professional standards of work undertaken by our members.”

He loves to provide clients with a high-quality and honest product and offers standard inclusions with all their homes. “Our standard inclusions with our homes are what we just price as standard.
