Houseplants are a great way to introduce a pop of colour and life into your space, as well as bringing the outdoors in. However, it can sometimes be difficult to figure out what plant to put in each space. So, let’s break it down by each room!
Kitchen - Basil (Ocimum Basilicum) A basil plant is a great option for the kitchen as, not only is it a refreshing pop of green, but you can actually use it! Use a few leaves in meals for a little fresh and herbaceous touch. Basil likes plenty of sunlight and regular watering so pop it on the windowsill and watch it grow!
By Timmi Aplin-Barrett Home office - Bunny Ear Cactus (Opuntia Microdasys) Spicing up your home office space is always fun so picking the right plant is vital. The Bunny Ear Cactus is a cute wee cactus that, with the right conditions, will grow quite quickly and flower. Because they’re a cactus, they don’t like much water either!

NoLimit is North Canterbury’s leading combination of wood fire consultancy, custom installation expertise, and support for the life of your wood fire.
Houseplant care Remember, when you purchase your plants, have a wee google about the needs of each plant. Lighting, water and soil requirements change for each plant.
The recommendation is to repot your new plant and make sure the roots are healthy and you have the correctly sized pot. Make sure you’ve got plenty of drainage and you’ll soon have some lush and lovely houseplants!
Living room - Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum) Your living room is a great place for plants since generally speaking, there’s plenty of windows. If you’re looking for something that takes up a decent amount of space and becomes a bit of a statement piece, a spider plant is a great idea. They’re virtually impossible to kill, grow very quickly and love lots of light.
Alongside your wood burner selection, NoLimit build customised hearth options to complement your decor and really make the fireplace a stunning feature in your home. NoLimit demonstrate a high-quality lifelong commitment to the success of your wood fire, from the installation to seasonal chimney sweeps and routine maintenance.
Join the ranks of delighted Cantabrians and contact Kelvin today
Bathroom - Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) The bathroom can be a difficult space to find a plant for because bathrooms are typically a high humidity, low light environment. Taking this into account, a peace lily is ideal. They don’t mind a little dim lighting and they love a warm, high humidity environment. They’re lush, require plenty of water and, given enough light, will produce beautiful white flowers.
At NoLimit there is no offloading of responsibility or subcontracting installations to inexperienced juniors; Kelvin is your personal advocate throughout the process and handles everything.

DRH Canterbury sales consultant, Diana Creighton, helped design the home and says the team was lucky enough to be offered a section by Highsted developers to build a show home. One of the DRH Canterbury owners, Carl Fordyce, built and helped design the home too. The build took over six months once they obtained building consent and DRH Canterbury had a firm idea about what the design would look like. “We had a great team of builders, contractors, and project management that made the build an enjoyable process,” Diana says. What inspired Diana and Carl with the design was that, “Originally the section shape and layout determined the design of the house. It is a splayed section – narrow at the front and wide at the back, which worked out perfectly, as all the living areas face the wide aspect with great North, North West sunshine. “We wanted the design to be something different from the surrounding houses – it needed to feel like a DRH home and at the same time, fit in a price range that would reflect our Canterbury market,” Diana says. The team used high-end products in key featured areas and pitched ceilings in the living and master bedroom “to give the house a comfortable wow factor”. By using hanging baskets and bags, you can create space for items like accessories. Decorate You can spice up the appearance of your wardrobe with peel and stick wallpaper. Hidden wonders
Swift Designs creative director/ interior designer, Treena Swift, advises people who are wanting to recreate the vibe as it’s coming up to spring soon. She says spring and summer are all about interior light control. She says people can control the feel of the interior light by using carefully selected window treatments, which are designed to filter or allow light in during the months ahead.
Swift Designs is a Christchurchbased award-winning interior design company founded in 2014, offering industry knowledge, experience, support, and advice.
“Throws are still needed to add colour and texture to a room and to provide warmth in the cooler late-night hours. Making these a lighter weight of the fabric is a good idea; swap out the heavy cable-knits, angora and fur throws for cotton and alpaca in smaller textured weaves.”
“Light filtering rollers or Venetian blinds can be effectively used on West facing windows for light control of the late sun as it sets.
Treena also advises al fresco dining is often used over these seasons, so have hand placemats, table runners, a table centre piece, unbreakable glassware for when it’s hot and you want a BBQ Scentedoutside.candles in lemon or citronella will help keep flying insects away too, she says. “Outdoor spaces will often need a good clean after the cooler months, removing moss and lichen, sweeping garden waste away, and giving the lawn a fresh mow. By doing these things you’ll invite people outside to enjoy these spaces.”
By Natasha Parrant
For outdoor settings, use a pergola or other structure for shade and light control. “Often clients will select different cushions and throws for the spring and summer seasons, in lighter, fresher colour pallets and textures. “Use linens, chintz (yes, it’s coming back into Vogue!), or cut velvet textures in brighter shades than you would use in winter, still keeping with your overall colour palette.
“The sun is higher during these seasons - this can often mean the light inside your home is less than in autumn and winter - so open up the window treatments, stacking curtains right off the windows.
With spring’s arrival it’s time to rearrange spaces to create light spaces in the living room and spice up the rooms with colours and natural light.

Creating inspired spaces that suit your style Finding your look need to include big plans or major renovations to achieve a stylish look that’s uniquely you. “People often underestimate the power of paint as a cost effective and impactful way to jazz up a space,” Davina says. “Additionally, colour can be introduced in a number of ways to help tailor and refresh interiors, all whilst keeping the structure and integrity of the home intact.”

To show New Zealanders how impactful colour can be, Dulux Trend Forecaster and Stylist, Bree Leech, undertook a room makeover in her own rental property using colours from the 2022 Dulux Colour Forecast. “Our dining room had a feature that didn’t work for us and I’d wanted to fix for some time,” Bree says. “It was a neutral space that had a cutout in the wall so you could look through to the adjoining room. The cut-out feature was serving no real purpose and the dining area itself just felt a bit flat.”
Wanting to create a happier space that would make the immediate and extended family want to collectively gather for meals and quality time, Bree acquired fluted panels for the wall – to cover the cut-out feature – and headed straight to Dulux to select colours from the latest trends! “I chose colours from the Wonder palette for this space as they best represent my personal style. The palette is fun and joyful –everything I wanted for this room.”

When it comes to scheming, going bold with colour can really pay off but, equally, small changes can make a big difference. If you want to introduce smaller pops of colour, choose furniture items or highlight small areas of a wall, door or even your ceiling.
colour is not just for walls! Painting dining chairs or a table is also a great way to achieve this look whilst renting. Add artwork that references your colour scheme to bring it all together. When selecting colours, always have an overall mood or style in mind and select colours that help bring this idea to life. It’s helpful to have a visual you can refer to like a mood board, materials board or a Pinterest board. This helps keep your colour scheme cohesive and gives you a reference point to work out your proportions as this can dramatically change the mood of the space. Working with existing fittings and fixtures can often mean a clash in colourways. While you may not be able to pull up the carpet or replace the kitchen benchtop, you can always add rugs for a tonal effect to get you closer to your desired palette.
If you’re renting and working with shelving that has a backboard, paint a contrasting colour behind the shelves so your other decor items can stand Remember, out.
“It allows you to customise your own scheme and feature your favourite shades in larger proportions but then add smaller amounts of the complementary colours from the palette in accessories and soft furnishings, like fabric prints and artwork, to create a cohesive look.”
I chose colours from the Wonder palette for this space as they best represent my personal style. The palette is fun and joyful – everything I wanted for this room.
Bree Leech’s styling tips:
According to Bree, the Dulux Forecast offers endless colourways to help you create a tailored look, it’s just about selecting colours that fit your needs and vision for the space.
- Dulux Trend Forecaster and Stylist, Bree Leech
“What I love about the Dulux Colour Forecast trends is you can choose any combination of colours from a palette, and they will work together,” Bree says.
Settling on Dulux Lakeside in Wash&Wear as the backdrop colour for the wall panelling, Bree was able to really breathe life and creativity into the space with the furnishings and accessories to finish the look. “Letting the Wonder palette inspire me, I’ve added new chairs painted with Dulux Tuakau in Aquanamel, a new rug and lots of colourful vessels to fill with flowers. “It’s really helped bring the space to life and is now somewhere the whole family enjoys spending time.”

Tui Gardens recommends planting seedlings in successive order so you have vegetables growing in different stages meaning you’ve got a constant supply of fresh food. Enjoy getting out there and getting dirty! As the weather gets warmer, you can think about planting new vegetables.
Most gardens, especially vegetable patches, go fairly dormant during the winter, so it’s important to make sure you’re preparing for the warmer months, as they’re certainly sneaking up on us. As we come into spring and summer, it’s time to move on from the quiet calm of winter and get ready for new growth and lush plants.
You want your vegetable garden soil to be rich in organic matter, friable and crumbly. You can find things like compost at your local plant or hardware stores such as Mitre 10 Mega or Oderings.
If you don’t already have a composter, get one going now with organic household waste. By the time spring arrives and you’re ready to plant new plants, you’ll have some lovely compost to mix into your soil to give things a Rakingboost.up dead leaves and such is also a good idea as they can kill patches of lawn and garden and they make good compost too.
Once you’re happy with your soil composition, you’ll want to leave it alone for a week or so while the worms get comfortable and everything settles again. As the weather gets warmer, you can think about planting new Thingsvegetables.likecarrots, broccoli, spring onions and leeks are excellent to begin with as they don’t mind the cooler temperatures at the end of autumn and beginning of spring. Be sure to take care when planting new plants and make sure to water seedlings after planting. Start doing your weeding now and get rid of unwanted vegetation. It can often be a big job so starting now means you get a head start. It’s wise to wait for things to dry out before getting stuck in. If it’s too wet, you can damage the soil structure. It’s easy to test how damp the soil is by grabbing a handful and pressing it together so it forms a ball. If it crumbles easily, it’s ready. If it retains its shape or breaks off in big clumps, it’s still too wet.

We take the time to understand your business and the risks you face. If you are building, renovating or altering a property you need to have insurance that will protect against sudden and unforeseen damage or loss. Most owner builders take out contract works insurance for a specific contract, while larger builders generally choose an annual policy that covers multiple contracts. If you’re doing an alteration, renovation or work to an existing house, it’s generally the homeowner’s responsibility to arrange construction cover. For a new build, full contract works cover is required, and is usually arranged by the builder. Having appropriate Contract Works insurance in place and active is a requirement of all standard construction contracts. Therefore, it is important that it is sorted before the project starts. When you are working on a construction site, plenty of things can go wrong. Damage or loss to a building could cost you time, money and even your reputation. That is why having the right amount and type of contract works insurance is an important part of your business toolkit, allowing you to get on with the job with less stress and worry. In New Zealand, contract works insurance is called by several other names, including builders risk cover, construction insurance, and contractors all risk coverage, but the purpose remains the same. As advisers, Cartwrights work for you, not the insurer. We take the time to understand your business and the risks you face. An outdoor entertainment area is a great addition to your home but, during the winter months, they can often get a bit out of hand. Things get a bit dirty and overgrown. However, as we get closer to the warmer seasons and spending more time outside, it’s time to spruce things up. Scrub-a-dub-dub Cleaning and decluttering is an important step when sorting out an outdoor area. You’d be surprised at how much muck and grime winds up on outdoor furniture, decks and patios. Moving everything out of an area and water blasting the ground space can be a great start. Make sure you’re not neglecting roof and rafter spaces; if you have a gazebo or some kind of shade cloth, you can be hosting spider webs, vegetation and all sorts of Getdirt.up there with a cloth or brush and get into those nooks and crannies. Wiping down and scrubbing outdoor furniture is a good idea too – winter can encourage moss and mold to grow on your Basically, furniture.getoutthere with a big bucket of soapy water and make everything spick and span! Out with the old It can be hard to figure out where to go once things are clean. Have a look around the space; if there’s items that are bit past their use by date, have broken bits or you’ve decided you don’t like them as much, get rid of them! There’s no point hanging onto stuff you don’t like. So, do a Marie Kondo and get rid of it if it doesn’t bring you joy. That old wicker chair that’s been in the corner for years? Donate it! The glass table with a big crack running through it? It’s out! Getting rid of old things can be really cathartic so have fun with it.

In with the new Now it’s time to figure out what kind of space you actually want when spending time outside. Whatever style you want, you can cater to that. Fire pits are a great center piece option and are actually quite versatile. In the summer, they’re a great place to toast marshmallows, throw in a few spuds or just hang out around. In the winter, they’re a great way to encourage people outside as they’ll still be warm and toasty!
Sometimes, it’s the little things that count when revamping a space. Things like cushions, candles and plants can make a big difference. Finding some hardy outdoor plants to fill a corner can be a really nice way to connect the space with the great outdoors. Small water features or outdoor sculptures can also bring a lot of personality to a space. Really, it’s all about personal taste. But be careful not to overdo it –avoiding clutter is an excellent way to keep a space modern and clean.
So, as the weather warms up, have fun in your spruced up outdoor living area.
Lighting an outdoor space is also important – you want to create atmosphere. If you’ve got a gazebo of some kind, putting string lights in the rafters can be a great way to add ambient lighting. You can also check out some outdoor solar lighting ideas to reduce ugly cables and cut down your power bill. Final touches Sometimes, it’s the little things that count when revamping a space. Dream Doors will help clients with services like facelifting existing kitchens where the team changes their clients’ doors, drawers, panels, and benchtops to give them a modern look without having to completely remove and replace kitchens, Adrian says. “We also offer a completely new kitchen and anything in between. We manage the whole process, removing and disposing of the old kitchen, installation of the new kitchen, and we take care of all the trades as well as plumbing, gas fitting, and electrical work.” The estimated costs vary depending on the size of the kitchen, how big of a job the renovation is and the materials and products used. “It could be around $6-7000 to change the fronts of a mediumsized kitchen, right up to $30-40 000 for a large kitchen with highend finishes and exotic granites.”
Homeowners should look at other people’s kitchens to “start building a picture” in their mind and figure out what they think their dream kitchen would look like and how it would function, Adrian says. “By all means, jump online and look through magazines for some inspo. Having a realistic budget is also important.”

Needless to say, Linda and Phils’ new home became even more special to them with that knowledge. It would appear that there are many more similar and delightful stories and photographs being shared by Musgrove’s customers. You only need to take a look at their ‘customer projects’ page on their website, where many of their talented “Wall of Fame” customers demonstrate a clear sense of pride from their use of recycled materials for their build and/or renovation projects. pitch and shading – and references up to 25 years of NIWA weather data from the local weather station. This bespoke design scenario showed an anticipated year one generation of 14,778kWh, which if all energy was self consumed would generate a saving of $4,876.74. What we have seen through the detailed system monitoring is a July-June annualised generation figure of 14,478kWh (98 percent of estimate). Given the pool was installed later in the year, exported energy was higher than anticipated – and pool heating settings need to be further refined in the coming summer to increase self consumption during the day. At the end of the first full year following installation, Peter has generated an 8.8 percent return on his initial investment – and with refinements to time of use, we’ll see exported energy reduce significantly in the next 12 months. A pending change of electricity retailer will also see the tariff paid for exported energy jump from $0.08 per kWh to $0.16 per kWh, providing a greater return on energy generated, but not consumed or stored in batteries.
At the end of the first full year initialpercenthasinstallation,followingPetergeneratedan8.8returnonhisinvestment–and with refinements to time of use, we’ll see exported energy reduce significantly in the next 12 months.
36 | B&R www.buildandrenovate.co.nz
What is the outlook for year two? We expect to be able to increase self consumption to circa 70 percent and increase returns on exported energy by 50 percent over the current tariff. The combined result of these minor tweaks would see savings shoot up over $3,800 in year two, with a simple return on investment for year two over 12 percent. As energy prices continue to rise, these returns will only improve in the future. The future is bright… Peter’s investment in solar power and lithium ion batteries means he has a guaranteed energy supply for at least the next 25 years (Hyundai solar cells have a full 25 year warranty) and is now protected from rising energy costs, as well as having resilience for future power outages on the network. No moving parts means very little maintenance, so Peter can now sit back and benefit from the long term savings. Based on the generation modelling, we’d expect the system to have repaid the entire investment within 8 years… and following this, the savings for the life of the system after all capital outlay is recovered should total a whopping $50,000+.
Solar power is an ideal solution when coupled with these large summer time electrical loads, as our peak generation periods overlap these peak consumption periods and place very little demand on network power. With a background in accounting, Peter was also very keen to know that his investment would generate a sound return and made good financial sense. Peter’s cost of distributed grid supplied energy is $0.33 per kWh (unit), so for every unit of energy he can generate and self consume, he’ll save $0.33. The system designed and installed was modelled using advanced solar power design software, referencing specific product efficiencies, installation parameters such as orientation,
Infinite Energy
Infinite Energy was commissioned to design and install a solar and battery system in 2021 for our client, Peter. The brief was complex, with the solution to deliver benefits on a number of levels. Often working from home and in an area experiencing regular power outages, Peter required a system that would deliver back up power to critical loads to allow him to continue to work in the event of a network disruption. Critical loads were nominated in consultation with the client –then wired via a secondary main switch, which becomes active in the event of a network outage. The Sungrow SH5K-30 inverter is designed to isolate from the network during an outage (to prevent any solar generation flowing back into the network) and allows the inverter to continue to operate without contact with the grid. This ensures any generation from our solar array is still captured – and the battery continues to operate storing and delivering energy to these critical loads. Within the first two weeks from commissioning the system, Peter experienced a day long scheduled power outage (network upgrades) and the system operated automatically and seamlessly to deliver continuity of energy during this time. At the time of installation, Peter was also planning to have a large swimming pool & spa installed – powered by an efficient electric heatpump. As such, the brief needed to account for this additional loading and deliver enough energy through summer and shoulder seasons to provide a really cost effective way to maintain the swimming pool temperature at a relatively constant 28°C.

Passive House Institute New Zealand has just produced a handbook to educate interested parties around their standard. Murray says it comes off the back of the knowledge that there are big changes happening in New Zealand’s building code. “The New Zealand government is starting to adopt passive house models in the building code. Kianga Ora even have several projects going that use the Passive House standard.”
Murray says Passive House is working off integrity. “In the past there have been lots of sustainable and environmental housing produced, but they haven’t performed properly. “So there’s lots of misconceptions around what we do.” Murray says that if you follow the systems that are backed by decades of research, there’s integrity and it works.

Passive House is a building standard first developed over 20 years ago in Germany. Since then, it’s been utilised around the world to make buildings more responsible.environmentally It focuses on three core things: energy efficiency, comfort and air Passivequality.House Institute New Zealand chairperson, Murray Homes where Robertson, says there are a lot of key ideas from passive homes that have been moved across to other, similar “Thingsstandards.likeairtightness and insulation have been slowly worked into the wider industry,” he Achievingsays. the passive house standard requires a lot of planning and forethought when starting from scratch. “The plans for the build need to be thermal modelled,” Murray says. “Once the plans are done, they need to be reviewed by a certifier who makes sure it’s all correct. “During the construction phase, you need to keep records to show you’re adhering to the plan. This means taking lots of they take into account the climate around the home. “New Zealand has a remarkable climate diversity. Passive House designers work with 19 different climate zones that are based on detailed NIWA data. The zones take into account factors such as average temperatures, altitude and whether the build site is inland or coastal.”
One of the key features of creating a Passive Home in New Zealand is maintaining a constant temperature. When designers begin modelling, Passive House homes are designed to maintain a temperature of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius, all year round. They are also designed to have consistent fresh air and never feel damp. The builds incorporate high performance windows and doors, excellent insulation, an airtight building envelope, no thermal bridges, mechanical ventilation and design stage energy modelling.
The Passive House standard isn’t just for residential, new build homes. It can be applied to existing homes and commercial buildings such as schools as well. Passive House Institute New Zealand PO Box
people thrive
Over the past 30 years, thousands of certified passive house buildings have been successfully built—on every continent, in every kind of climate. Certification is carried out by third party experts, independent of the project’s designer or builder. It’s the building owner’s guarantee that they’ll get the building performance and benefits they paid for. How passive performancehousecontributes to mitigating climate change There’s good work happening on designing buildings that have less embodied carbon emissions. In brief, that means using less material like concrete and steel, because their manufacture is energy intensive and releases a lot of carbon dioxide. Embodied carbon calculations also take into account the whole life cycle of a product, including transportation and Reducingdisposal.embodied carbon is important but reducing operational carbon is the first and vitally necessary step. Keeping a house warm and heating hot water account for the largest fraction of energy used in constructing and operating a building over its lifetime. Passive House levels of performance hit the sweet spot, balancing costs with benefits.

If we choose to build better, New Zealanders will be happier, healthier and more comfy, all while making massive savings on their heating and cooling bills. It’s 100 percent possible to create buildings that are a comfortable temperature all the time and are always perfectly ventilated with just the right amount of fresh, filtered air. No draughts, no damp, no mould—all with up to 90 percent savings on heating and cooling. I head a building science consultancy focused on two things: improving human comfort and wellbeing; and addressing climate change. All this, through building better. We like maths and evidence and rigorous analysis. That’s why we value the international Passive House building standard, because it delivers all the benefits for people I’ve described above.
Oculus EngineeringArchitecturalisagroup
The single most important thing that goes into making a Passive House is modelling how the building will perform, early on in the design stage. To get technical, what’s needed is a ‘design-stage thermal energy model’. You see claims of “passive house principles” popping up as more people get on board with building better homes than the Building Code minimum. But a passive house is more than extra insulation and better windows.
of passionate enclosure/façade engineers on a mission to provide guidance and resources to design buildings with comfort, health and performance as top priority.
Building better matters for people and the planet
Oculus EngineeringArchitectural Passive House design considers all of these attributes as standard, and also minimises the requirement of energy that is consumed in a standard home. A certified passive house is comfortable to live in year round, 24 hours a day, in all rooms throughout the house at an energy cost of just 15kWh/ m2 per year (about $650/year for a typical house or around $200 for a typical apartment). The surface temperatures of walls, windows, floors and ceilings are also all designed to prevent condensation and mould growth, with no draughts or wind rushing through the home, which minimises maintenance.
The New Zealand build industry needs to shift the mentality of ‘how it’s always been done’ and start designing and building better. With help from Oculus, better doesn’t need to cost more - they provide the answers and support you need when looking to build smarter.
Auckland | Wellington| Queenstown
Designing to Passive House for apartments in Auckland can be more cost effective than complying with the Government’s Healthy Home Standards, and results in a far healthier and more economical way to operate and maintain building long-term.
Sense and sensibility
Just as electric vehicles are on their way to becoming the norm in some markets because they are better for the environment and, despite a larger upfront cost, are less expensive in the long run, he believes the same will happen with thermally efficient homes in New Zealand. “When I established DCD in late 2014, the interest level was about a two out of ten. But the interest and education level among consumers is growing. Now it's at about five out of ten," Dowling says.
The kids healthier, areyou sleep better, it's much quieter, you use less energy, the whole house is liveable and there are far smaller fluctuations in temperature.
Dowling says the goal when he started the business was to be nationally recognised and to create homes that performed well but took traditional forms. And that goal was achieved in 2018 and again in 2021 when DCD won the Master Builders' Supreme House of the Year for the southern region.
Dennis Dowling, the founder and chief executive of DCD Building in Queenstown, has very high standards. In fact, his company won't build anything unless it's what he calls thermally efficient or high-performance.
??? Passive aggressive: DCD's mission to change the way New Zealand builds DCD Building specialises in thermally followingconstructionSoimpactownersqualitythathigh-performanceefficient,homesprovideabetteroflifefortheandhavelessontheenvironment.whyaren'tmorecompaniestheirlead?
And things are changing across the board. Some valuers are now factoring thermal efficiency into their analysis.
X | B&R www.buildandrenovate.co.nz
The Passive House movement was started in Germany about 31 years ago and Dowling says homes built to that standard are nearly five times more resolved than a codecompliant building in New Zealand. He's not a Passive House purist and there is a range of different definitions for high-performance or thermally efficient homes, but he does believe in the philosophy and builds homes with a high degree of airtightness, lots of insulation and a ventilation system that retains heat but exchanges air. Changes to building codes in some countries have meant that their buildings rise above or get so close to Passive Home levels of air tightness that it has basically become the building standard, he says. That's not the case in New Zealand, however. "Between 2014 and 2018, Vancouver went from one passive house to 2,600. New Zealand in 2018 had 24."
"The kids are healthier, you sleep better, it's much quieter, you use less energy, the whole house is liveable and there are far smaller fluctuations in temperature. Those valuers that don't factor the difference in are doing a disservice to their profession because they are valuing properties the same even though the quality of life and durability is different." Keep it tight
Superhomes and Passive Homes 40 | B&R www.buildandrenovate.co.nz
And our expectations of warmth are also a long way behind. The World Health Organization's recommended indoor temperature is 18C (or 21C for homes with babies or the elderly), and anything below that is deemed detrimental to the occupants' health. A study by Statistics NZ in 2018 showed that the winter temperature was under 18C in a third of New Zealand homes (and was also too hot in a third of homes during summer). Build better DCD focuses on building high-end residential homes and, when people are already spending millions, making it thermally efficient is a relatively small additional cost.
DCD focuses on building additionalisthermallymillions,areand,residentialhigh-endhomeswhenpeoplealreadyspendingmakingitefficientarelativelysmallcost.
"The largest chunk of a building's c arbon f ootprint is not the construction, it's the o ngoing o peration a nd maintenance of it. And, on average, ou r hou ses op erate o n about 20 percent of the energy of a s tandard h ouse."
Most DCD homes now also feature solar panels and storage batteries, which means they are often supporting the grid by exporting excess po wer.
Where possible, DCD also uses locally produced, natural materials and uses admixtures to reduce the carbon in its concrete. "But longevity, durability and efficiency is the ultimate form of sustainability so that's our primary f ocus." Right from the start
While more architects are designing h igh-performance buildings, 70 percent of DCD's work is d esign a nd b uild. Because of its focus on the end result, Dowling says DCD's approach to building is very different to the norm. He likens its model to a three-legged stool: architectural design, building performance and price all need to be in parity. Leading the way Dowling says DCD is basically building a curated collection of homes to show what can be achieved by using certain technologies and building techniques. He believes changing the quality and performance standards of homes would improve every new building, reduce energy usage and carbon emissions, and create much healthier homes. However, right now, houses like these are the exception, not the rule.
www.buildandrenovate.co.nz B&R | ???X
Deep i mpact Building in this way will also play an important role in reaching our carbon emission reduction targets, he says. While there have been improvements in energy e fficiency over the years, inefficient buildings are still a major issue and in 2018, nearly 9.4 percent of domestic carbon emissions were b uilding-related.

Top-notch comfort and excellence and are built using Passivhaus requirements as standard practice to provide top notch comfort and excellence. A warm comfortable home with great air quality, and even temperatures throughout, can be achieved by applying some key principles:
Popular with people heading down a more environmental route, they’re a great option for those looking to try something new. However, with a smaller home comes certain logistical difficulties. For example; toilets! Tiny homes aren’t very well equipped for a full plumbing system so a bog-standard flushing loo just isn’t practical.
Another benefit is that using waterless composting toilets means you create less biohazardous waste water. “Grey water, like what you get from washing your dishes is less soiled than flushed toilet water,” explains Dylan. This means users are reducing their overall waste discharge which is better for the Theenvironment.environment, of course, is a massive part of why Dylan began the company in the first place. He stumbled across the concept of waterless composting toilets back in 2007 when looking for a loo for his house bus. Not only did the idea seem like a good solution for small homes but he saw a lot of environmental potential. “We need to take responsibility for the waste we generate,” he says. “Plus, it’s not just waste – we can use it to nurture the soil.”
Dylan says that when we view human excreta as simply waste, an extremely important part of the nutrient cycle of the earth is broken. “This leads to needing lots of chemical fertilizers and creates lower quality food with less nutrients,” he Instead, says.
when our waste is composted properly and returned to the soil, it creates a valuable and safe product and helps keep the cycle going for future generations. “We need to invest in nature,” Dylan says. “The company slogan is ‘in nature, we trust’ and in order to do that, we need to invest.”
However, it’s not an easy industry to be in. The world view around waterless compostable toilets isn’t all niceties. Dylan spends a lot of time in education mode; making sure people understand how the technology works and dispelling myths. “A common question is whether the toilets smell,” he says. “I think people liken these toilets to old long drops but, in reality, would a company actually sell a product that smells?”
44 | B&R www.buildandrenovate.co.nz Tiny Home Living
The composting toilets that WCTNZ works with are hygienic, odourless, cost effective and are easily maintained. They also look comfortable in the bathroom.
He says this is why they’re putting a lot of effort into running support lines and offering educational information. “We need to support people as much as we can.”
Using a waterless composting toilet can save approximately 60,000 liters of fresh, drinkable water per household annually.
Overall though, Dylan says the customer base appears to be concerned citizens. They’re interested in taking care of themselves and the environment. He says the company is focused on pioneering on a level of expert knowledge and innovation with regards to the technology.
www.wctnz.co.nzsales@wctnz.co.nz0800AucklandHenderson022027
This is where WCTNZ or Waterless Composting Toilets New Zealand comes in.
WCTNZ founder and managing director, Dylan Timney, says there are several benefits of a waterless composting toilet. “They really help with the reduction of consumption of water,” he says. “Tiny homes have a small catchment for potable water so flushing it away seems pointless.”
“In an age where humanity’s relationship with the earth is in desperate need of reform, we are proud to be working with a range of products which are solution-based and undoubtedly have a positive impact on both the planet and the people who use them,” Dylan says.
Tiny homes are becoming more of a common sight as people look for new housing options. With the housing market sky rocketing and the view of what a home should look like shifting, it’s no wonder these tiny homes are trending. They’re often transportable and they’re smaller which means they’re easy to clean, cheaper to heat and encourage a more minimalist lifestyle.

48 | B&R www.buildandrenovate.co.nz North Canterbury There could potentially be more than 400 new homes built in Kaikōura, which is great news for the local economy.
Kaikōura District Council mayor Craig Mackle says, “The funding from the IAF is a potential game changer to help address this need within our housing stock - both now and in the future. “If the Vicarage Views resource consent goes through, the subdivision and the council infrastructure can start this year. “The new roading, footpaths, and cycleways are very exciting as they will provide connectivity between the two subdivisions and with the town… It also has the potential to change how we get around Kaikōura for the better.”
The infrastructure project will begin in 2022/2023 with the first IAF-enabled houses hoping to be completed between 2023 and Stage2024.one (after resource consents for Vicarage Views are accepted) aims to have 43 modern homes within the First Home Grant House price cap (which can be used to help people purchase new builds or existing properties and house price caps regulate the maximum price for new or existing/older homes based on the Twentyregion).ofthose are individual houses for elderly people. Therefore, there’ll be 83 sections in Vicarage Views.
The new roading, footpaths, and cycleways are very exciting as they will provide connectivity between the two subdivisions and with the town… It also has the potential to change how we get around Kaikōura for the better.
Boosting Kaikoura’s development
The first phase of the project consists of a footpath connecting Vicarage Views to schools on Ludstone Road and the town, including the final phases of a cycleway path connecting Ludstone Road through Green Lane to Ocean Ridge. Green Lane will then be upgraded and sealed to Ocean Ridge, which also includes a new rail crossing that will connect with the extension of the cycle/pathway.
According to the Kaikōura District Council (KDC), Kāinga Ora’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund of $7.8 million will fund council infrastructure, housing minister Doctor Megan Wood said in July 2022. The fund is an essential part of the government’s $3.8 billion Housing Acceleration Fund (which hopes to increase the chance of people getting easily accessible and more affordable houses), as stated in March 2021. The Infrastructure Acceleration Fund aims to fund infrastructure such as transport, three waters, and flood management to ensure there are new houses available for people who need it most. The infrastructure projects will allow for new houses across a couple of sites including Vicarage Views, a new subdivision based on the former NCTIR village site right across from Ludstone Road, and an extension of the Ocean Ridge subdivision. A resource consent needs to be granted to the developer for Vicarage Views, and a plan change for the second step of the Ocean Ridge extension.

For many years, Wānaka has been labelled as Queenstown’s smaller, and sleepier, neighbour.
“Contractors on site are now moving into some minor sealing work, laying gravel to form the base for the new parking spaces, then they’ll install stormwater infrastructure and lay new asphalt on Ardmore Street,” said Mr Bruce.
A temporary closure to the section of Ardmore Street between McDougall Street and Dungarvon Street remains in place, and Mr Bruce added that the progress made on Stage Two wouldn’t have been possible without it. Construction on Stage Two of the Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan is anticipated to be complete by the end of September 2022.
FOUR BIG MOVES
The community feedback shaped four ‘big moves’. Every stage and project within the Lakefront Development Plan will be designed with the four big moves in mind: 1. Restore and develop Ecology through ecological enhancements and native revegetation planting 2. Provide continuous Access with a lakefrontpromenadepedestrian/cyclewayaroundthe 3. Improve land use with lakefront linear parks and precincts 4. Provide a range of facilities.
Of course, visitor numbers have always been high over the Christmas-New Year period and again in July and August for the ski season.
However, in the last five years the resort-town’s potential has well and truly been realised by buyers and investors alike, with the Queenstown Lakes District council projecting the Wanaka ward population to see an 80 percent increase over the next 30 years. Rumour has it, even international ride-share company Uber has plans to come to Wānaka. While this will be fantastic for the local economy, such development doesn’t come without its own set of growing pains. To meet the demands of a burgeoning visitor and general population, in 2015 the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) commissioned Reset Urban Design to prepare a development plan for the Wānaka Lakefront. And indeed, as of June 2022, Wānaka’s community is closer to enjoying a greatly improved space on the lakefront, as Stage Two of the Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan continues full steam ahead.
Wānaka Community Board Chair, Barry Bruce, was happy with the headway being made, and said it was great to see the different elements of Stage Two taking shape before the arrival of winter.
Stage Two will see a shared pathway on the lakefront running from McDougall Street to Dungarvon Street, 110 new car parking spaces and four accessible spaces added along the lake side of Ardmore Street, opposite Pembroke QueenstownPark.Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) general manager Community Services, Thunes Cloete, commented that he was excited to see the progress being made and looked forward to Stage Two being complete and open to locals and visitors.

Is tech holding your projects back? Target State Consulting can help with that. The people at Target State Consulting know that success starts with getting your architecture right. But we’re not talking about that type of architecture - we are your digital strategists who look at the design of your IT infrastructure. We do this by taking a complete view of the technology you have currently, where you want it to be, and what needs to happen to bridge this gap. We offer six main services to achieve this: consult, evaluate, plan, act, lead, and rescue. The first three services are vital and cannot be rushed. Like a regular architect, we first take the time to get to know you and your business and what you want to achieve – this is the consult. Next, in the evaluating phase, we identify the challenges you are facing and really get to grips with the scope of your digital project and IT goals. Before jumping headfirst into action, we ask the important questions – across different layers of your organisation – to find the true cause of what’s holding you back from being exceptional. Time spent wisely at the beginning means we’re fixing the problem so it doesn’t come back, not masking the symptoms.
Target State is spearheaded by Anthony McMahon who is well-respected and liked in New Zealand’s tech scene. He’s often invited to speak at conferences, is the podcast host of popular BizBytes, and is also known as The IT Psychiatrist. Target State is supported by a team of associates who have a proven track record in cyber security, IT operations, policies and processes, and governance and risk. Knowledge base We’re also generous with our knowledge and expertise. Check out our recently renovated website: www.targetstate.co.nz where you can read several white papers, blogs and case studies on how to make smart, strategic decisions that are based on your goals and vision, and not chasing the latest trend. Your business architecture project won’t appear on Grand Designs. But engaging Anthony and associates from Target State can mean the difference between going wildly over schedule and budget and saving you a lot of money, time, and face. Like all good architects, we don’t leave it there. We provide executive level support to help you throughout your digital projects.transformation

Only then can we move onto the planning phase where we will provide a solid roadmap of where you’re heading and pinpoint the milestones. This is where we map out the IT skills, capabilities, and resources you’ll need along the way and the action steps to make it happen. Executive support Like all good architects, we don’t leave it there. We provide executive level support to help you throughout your digital transformation projects. And if something has gone wrong in the past – and you need us to quickly step in before you’ve blown your budget and lost your best people – we can rescue you and bring you back on track. We offer our services to a wide variety of industries and sectors, from not-for-profits to largescale corporates. What everyone has in common is they need consultants who are not afraid to get involved and project manage, who avoid tech speak, and have the personality and vision to lead and motivate staff across different levels of the organisation. We tick all those boxes.

“The building industry is already experiencing significant pressure from supply chain constraints, skill shortages and price escalation for building materials, in the context of ongoing high levels of building demand. “Deferring the timeframe for the new insulation standards recognises more time is needed to enable the industry to be ready to implement them effectively,” Malcolm says. The new regulations are aimed at reducing the energy needed for heating residential homes by up to 40 percent. They double the requirement for roof insulation, increase the performance requirements for windows, and raise requirements for underfloor insulation. “As well as the availability of products to meet the new requirements, builders need to adapt to new methods of design and construction, which requires system-wide training,” he says. For its part, NZCB is developing specific H1 training and support materials for its member builders, and will encourage their participation in any MBIE-led training, to ensure they are well-equipped to meet the new requirements and contribute to improved energy efficiency outcomes.
NZCB’s newly appointed chief executive, Malcolm Fleming, says while the full suite of changes were due to take effect in November this year, the deferral of all of the changes other than those relating to window glazing, gives the industry and government time to work together to address challenges to implementing the new requirements.

A simple way to avoid such a trap is to always ask to sight a NZ Practising Licence before any work Sanitarybegins.plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are regulated industries in New Zealand, and it is illegal to do this restricted work unless authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). The health and safety risks are high, and you may be invalidating your insurance policy. Only authorised tradespeople who carry a current NZ Practising Licence can carry out this work.

The PGDB is the statutory body that regulates the trades to ensure those providing the services are competent and safe.

PGDB chief executive Martin Sawyers says, “To stay safe and avoid the risk, it takes one simple action – ask to sight a licence card. It states the credentials of a tradesperson and the type of work they are authorised to carry out. “It is important for homeowners to know that plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying work undertaken by unauthorised tradespeople, not only risks their family’s health and safety – but may also invalidate their insurance policy.”
New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) has welcomed the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) decision that most of the changes to energy efficiency ratings (H1) component of the building code, which introduce new standards for insulation, will take effect from May 2023.

Surviving the strain of living through major home renovations is more gruelling than ever as the building materials shortage is, in many instances, doubling the amount of time families have to co-exist with the dust, the noise and the disorder of a building site.
Designate activity zones “If you have young kids, they’re going to think they’re in Heaven’s playground. You have to be diligent about health and safety. Designate areas as for play, living and working and make sure the whole family understands the boundaries and that they buy-in to Forit.”more information visit: www.renovations.nz
“The lucky families are the ones that can afford to put the furniture in storage and move into an Airbnb, but even then the budget is getting hammered by extended stays in the Airbnb (or with family) due to scarcity of building materials. With the building materials shortage worsening, he says relationships between builders and customers can become strained as frustrations build-up, but current circumstances are beyond a builder’s control.
“We tell clients that in about three months, they will lose it. They
“You also get builders turning off the power and water so they can work, which can very hard on a family, if you don’t have coping strategies. always tell us that they’re ‘not like that and that ‘everything will be fine’, but we know, after three months, they begin to unravel –it’s only human.”
.
Mark Trafford, managing director and founder of the national renovations franchise Maintain To Profit, says with an active coping plan in place, families are still getting through what is both a stressful and rewarding event in their lives. Mark says living on-site while the house is undergoing a major renovation can create health and safety hazards.
Surviving a major renovation in an age of building delays
Mark offers the following tips for major renovations in 2022: Move out It’s always best policy to live elsewhere during a renovation. Families living on-site hinder the project, which as a result, takes longer to complete even when there aren’t materials shortages. Take time out It’s a good idea to spend as little time as possible in the house. “Take time out as much as you can, even if you are just making better use of your backyard for things like meals, coffee, homework and play – take more walks, do day long picnics on the weekends and make extended visits to family; even take regular weekends away. Getting out and about will help you de-stress.”

Rushing into trouble
“It is key to make careful and considered choices that allow businesses to recover quickly, rebuild and set it up for future growth.”
He says a restructure will be essential for many businesses due to the impact of COVID-19 and the goal is to reset, so in one or twoyears, companies are back and better than ever. “It’s all about thinking positively, cleverly, and putting in place new ways of thinking and strategies based on what it could be like, and what will enhance your business to make it successful.”
How to make the right decisions – not rash ones
As the country forges ahead in what can only be describes as uncertain times, an employment law and HR expert is urging companies not to make rash decisions when faced with the intense pressure of today’s working environment.
MyHR CEO Jason Ennor says it is a critical time and the decisions businesses make now could be the difference between success or failure.

He says losing top employees results in a loss of intellectual property and industry knowledge, as well as key staff who could play an instrumental role in the new direction and future success of the company.
“I’ve seen too many businesses shed good staff and years of valuable experience because they just look at the salaries and cut based on how much people are paid.”
Some tips when resetting or restructuring include: Improving efficiencies and cost effectiveness by outsourcing non-core services such as IT and HR to provide flexibility during times of downturn as well as times of Remembergrowth. employment law hasn’t changed. There may be newfound shortcuts for employers who need to make changes, however, all the normal rules of good faith, fair and reasonable process, and consultation still apply. Make short term tweaks or set up interim structures such as reduced hours or temporary pay cuts, which many companies have already done. The key is to set a timeline, be committed, and if everybody is invested in finding good outcomes there is a much better chance at success. “During a time of uncertainty, which many companies are facing over the next few months and into next year, it is key to look after the wellbeing and motivation of “It’semployees.allaboutbeing transparent and keeping staff connected and engaged with the new direction and focus the company has.”
Jason says some common mistakes businesses make include letting top performing staff go, without considering how they could be retained.
“It is essential to retain your good people who know the business inside out and can work with you to identify opportunities and act on them quickly. “It’s these employees who will help guide the business through a restructure and steer it in the right direction with fresh ideas, new ways of thinking and optimism.”

Premier Insulation Investing in good quality insulation is one of the best things you can do to create a warmer, drier and healthier home. It also helps reduce your heating and cooling costs over the life of your home. Insulation works by slowing the transfer of heat, keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. A small increase in cost now will ensure you’re living in a home insulated to international standards and will help ensure that you protect your capital value and future proof your investment. Changes to legislation Minimum ceiling insulation requirements set by the New Zealand Building Code are increasing soon, but insulation levels for walls won’t change for another year or two. If you’re planning to build or renovate you should consider asking your designer and builder to specify wall and ceiling insulation to the new standards. Expert advice You should consider acoustic insulation for internal walls and mid-floors. Once your build is finished it is very expensive to add more wall or mid-floor insulation, and the difference it
Why insulation matters makes is worth every cent. Good quality acoustic insulation will turn down the volume on noise between rooms so that loud voices become a slight murmur. Insulating between upstairs and downstairs will help reduce the booming sounds of heavy footsteps, and music blaring in the kids’ bedrooms. It’s a simple and cost-effective upgrade that will make the world of difference to living in a busy home. What insulation is right for you? When planning which insulation is right for you, look out for the R-Value. The R-Value is a measure of insulation performance. The higher the R-Value, the higher the insulation performance. At Premier Insulation, we offer traditional glasswool insulation which is great value and offers a high-performance range of thermal and acoustic insulation for walls and ceilings. We also manufacture a premium range of 100% polyester insulation. Made right here in NZ for NZ conditions, Premier 100% polyester insulation is safe to touch without itching and scratching. It’s made from at least 45% already recycled PET plastic and does not contain any chemicals or binders. It’s clean and safe, even for asthma sufferers, it’s not affected by moisture, and will last the life of your home without slumping or sagging. Installation of insulation Once you’ve selected the best insulation for your needs, make sure you choose the best local installer. Ensuring a quality install with no gaps and full coverage is as important as the insulation itself. A sloppy install can affect the performance of your insulation, and it can be difficult and expensive to fix after the build is complete.
