When I was about four and pushed my brother into a shallow well to see what would happen, my mind probably wasn’t swirling away in deep contemplation about the consequences such an innocuous nudge in the right direction might reap. Apart from the fact I was obviously an absolute horror of a child, the moral of this and countless other stories, is that decisions and their resulting actions have implications. And life is full of decisions; lots and lots of decisions. Apparently we make, roughly, 226.7 decisions just about food in a single day, with the total number of daily decisions in the thousands.

While I’m not entirely sure what .7 of a decision actually is, what the numbers don’t tell you is some decisions make a much larger splash (like my brother) than others, and along these lines, decisions about house and home can be tsunamis. And before even a single nail has been hammered into your potential new home or renovation in anger, there’s a multitude of decisions to make. So in this issue Cymon Allfrey

discusses the cost of architecture and the importance of spending your money in the right place. If any price isn’t even close to the right price, then there’s a new product on the market called Draught Right, which takes laymen on a step by step course to producing building plans good enough to get council consent. Our cover story about cool cribs looks at forward thinking designs with convenience and accessible living in mind; functional dwellings that won’t break the bank and ooze cool. For renovators, we look at new roof options and the amazing difference a coat of paint can make. And Ann-Marie Appleton talks about the blurred lines between indoor and outdoor design. Since entertaining during summer months is a right of passage, we’ve obliged by setting the scene for a continuous picnic, listing the essentials for any outdoor oasis. So forget formal meals and settle in for some summer fun. Just remember to arm yourself with knowledge before you head out on a decision making spree, lest you fall down a well of your own making.

A warm welcome

Curb appeal By Davina Richards

A letterbox is one of the first things you notice when you walk up to a house and many of them fail to provoke curiosity from visitors, passersby or potential home buyers. If you look hard enough there are letterbox designs out there which really do stand out and strike up conversation.

OK, so letterboxes are numbered to help you identify the right house, but how much easier would it be for the mail man, a friend, or guest visiting your home if you installed a letterbox which is instantly recognisable? Letterboxes have changed from the endless rows of traditional boxes seen in every neighborhood. Fun and quirky ones are usually made by the homeowner to give their home personality, from farm animals, old bicycles, wine barrels, cable drums, to surf boards, half a boat, oversized hammer… there are endless ideas out there. Installing a bold one to differentiate yourself from the rest of the neighborhood is bound to bring a smile to the faces of any passersby and one which leads

Architecture

The cost of an architect By Cymon Allfrey

Understanding the cost of engaging an architectural designer versus opting to build a home from the pages of a catalogue is about measuring influence over time against the ultimate goal to build the perfect structure for you, your family, your site and your budget.

Consider it a curve of influence, with the curve rising in an upward arch, illustrating that at the start of a project the ability to influence is great, while at the end it is not. Choosing to build with a group housing company sees basic decisions determined at the outset. For example, how big the home is, the materials to be used and so forth.

While you are able to make some amends, a generic plan is the starting point and hence your ability to influence is decreased. While you may have had influence over choice, you have not had an influence over all decisions. Consider it in terms of shoes, you have selected gumboots over work boots, but not been able to select black over brown. Your options and hence decisions are limited. You are effectively entering the curve of influence half way up the line. Engaging a design professional is about understanding your budget. While working with an architect or architectural designer will generate fees, this does not result in a change to your budget, as your budget is not usually a variable. It is essential however, that you openly discuss your budget with your designer

and ensure there is parity between this and your brief. While there may be some tough discussions to be had at this point, this is the time to have them. Having these discussions part way through the process will only cost you more time and money in the long run. From the set of drawings your designer then presents you with, it is you who then makes the decisions around which bells and whistles are included in the final product. It is important to understand that the fees associated with a designer are intrinsically linked with the time they invest in understanding your needs, and how to respond to your brief and site in the most appropriate way. Engaging a designer at the earliest point in the process will generate the greatest result. By working with someone who doesn’t attribute value to the process, will see you start further up the curve of influence, meaning you are passing up the chance to maximise your results. You are also less likely to control the time and money spent on your project, should you opt to engage a designer part way through the build. Once the foundation has been laid, you can’t change the size of your structure, unless you are prepared to pay. For many, building is a once in a lifetime undertaking, and for all, is a big outlay of money. Quality doesn’t have to come at a cost and should never be sacrificed – so ensure you are investing in the right outcome and stepping into the curve of influence at the lowest possible point. Having worked with building cost budgets from $100,000 to $2 million, no matter what your version of affordability is, Box Living will deliver beautifully crafted, modern, elegant and eco-friendly buildings to fall in love with. Box Living is a registered architectural practice and a construction company in Auckland which builds anywhere and everywhere in New Zealand. Composed of 24 professionals who are passionate about midcentury modern design, they love open spaces and the light, clean and elegant structure this style of architecture offers.

Environmental impact is one of the main principles at the forefront of Box Living which is why it is Carbon Zero certified. The company strives to be as eco-friendly as it can possibly be and stray from using bricks, tiles and concrete in the external walls. Instead, sustainably grown timber is firmly in its material palette and

it uses lightweight cladding and materials sourced close to the build site, so that transport costs and carbon emissions are kept to a minimum. You can also expect the team to be well versed in advising clients about solar hot water systems, solar (PV) power, rainwater collection and greywater recycling. Box Living complete residential projects but is not shy of commercial work either. Construction on its first light commercial building on

Petersborough Street began in November 2013 and was completed in July this year. The building, which is tenanted by Fox Surveying on the top floor and Cymon Allfrey Architects on the ground floor, is approximately 500 sqm across two levels, with an internal courtyard area for the ground floor and ‘green roof garden’ for the upper storey. The building uses Box’s post and beam system which consists of a structural exoskeleton of engineered timber posts

and beams and stainless steel cross-braces. “The building is very different from the stereotypical local concrete and glass structures, being predominantly timber, and has modernist style overtones. This includes splashes of colour (the various doors around the building) clean sleek lines and full height windows, doors and cabinetry,” Box Living CEO Dan Heyworth says. www.boxliving.co.nz

An architectural practice based in Wellington, each project carried out is a promise of great design and energy efficiency. Spearheaded by young professionals with a drive to establish a new standard of architecture, design and energy efficiency, the team is not afraid to break from tradition to deliver superior homes. The company offers architectural services for people looking to design and build a home from scratch or an addition to an existing home.

The team is inspired by New Zealand’s natural surroundings which compel them to create housing which nurtures our way of life and the environment we live in. All houses are built in a carefully controlled factory environment, with all components fully finished and weatherproofed; pre-wired, pre-plumbed and prepainted. First Light’s standard two bedroom option is between $300k – 350k, delivered to site. The Meridian First Light house is a concept stemmed from a Victoria University undergraduate

project in Wellington, 2009. The design proposal gained entry into the prestigious US Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon in 2011, where the team built the house and travelled it to America to compete against 19 other houses from around the world. First Light was awarded first prize in Engineering and first equal in Hot Water and Energy Balance, second place in Architecture, third place in Market Appeal and third place overall in the Solar Decathlon; a pretty good feat for Kiwis on a global stage. The house has since scooped additional awards in New Zealand including the 2013 NZIA (New Zealand Institute of Architects) award for International Architecture, and commendations in Sustainability, Clever Wood Solutions and Residential Architectural Excellence in the Timber Design Awards 2011.

“The first build of the second version of the First Light home is a more affordable factory-built home designed for New Zealand. This build is located in Whakahoro (Blue Duck Station) approximately an hour from Tongariro National Park,” Nick Officer from First Light says. “It was factory-built and delivered to the site where the watertight envelope was erected in a matter of days. The interior, finishing and landscaping is under construction now and we expect it to be finished in November/December.” The genuine belief that energy efficient architecture is the way of the future is the key principle behind First Light’s designs. www.firstlightstudio.co.nz B&R | 15

You wouldn’t think to place luxury and shipping containers in the same category, but during the years converted shipping containers have become a statement, offering architecturally designed, compact homes and commercial buildings which truly stand out in style. Leading company Cubular is based at Mount Maunganui and spearheaded by design aficionadas Cameron Cotton, a multi-award winning architect, and Ingrid Cotton, an interior designer.

The husband and wife duo set up Cubular as a response to the Canterbury earthquakes and offer a range of designs using existing Cubular plans, or custom-made designs which meet, and exceed, clients’ needs. Cubular designs use a combination of 20ft and 40ft single and multi-level shipping containers, and prices range from $45,000 - $400,000. And did I mention that the whole process takes less than 12 weeks? The company strives to move container construction into the architectural scene, and with world interest coming in from all directions, it’s clear that Cubular is recognised for being ahead in design and innovation, as well as offering a solution to housing affordability.

The Cubular Pacific was designed and built in Mount Maunganui and uses two 40ft containers to create a chic little getaway home with two bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom. Light and spacious, it is structurally robust, watertight and solid in construction, while at the same time easily transportable and re-locatable. The container buildings are designed to allow transportation via truck or rail. The flooring is engineered wood, Blackbutt, an Australian hardwood, the ceiling poplar plywood with recessed LED lighting, and the walls plywood painted with Resene alabaster. It is well suited to the harsh sun and sea spray conditions of New Zealand, making it the perfect summer bach. It has double glazed aluminium windows and full insulation. Louvers are also used to control airflow and big sliding doors on ether side open up the space to the outdoors. The Corten steel exterior is painted in matt black and pillars of western red cedar on either side of the joinery create a distinctive design feature. www.cubular.co.nz

Sustainable design

Solar energy considerations What’s environmentally friendly, efficient, produces no emissions or noise and is low maintenance? That’s right… solar energy. In recent years solar energy options have become more prominent in homes as they become more affordable. Photovoltaics (PV), the cells which convert sunlight into usable household power, mean you can take control of your electricity costs. Suitable for most homes, solar panels can be placed on roofs,

18 | B&R

garages, facades, conservatory roofs, sun shades or specially built stands on the ground. If you own your home, have high electricity bills and have a roof which receives plenty of sunlight, then solar may be the right option for you. But are they right for your home?

A suitable roof should be made of composite, should not be too steep and have plenty of space to install solar panels; a typical 1kW unit needs an area of around eight square metres. Flat roofs, concrete tiles, wood shake roofs are more difficult to install on. To determine how many solar panels you will need, consider the following: • How much space you have on your roof • How much electricity your home consumes in a year • How much energy you would like to reduce in your home • Your budget.

Its important solar panels receive good levels of direct sunlight in a north facing location with year round sun; but they are still effective on cloudy days.

Consider roof conditions: • Does it get sun exposure? • What material is it made of? • Does it get shade? • What condition is it in?

Consider the environment such as neighbouring buildings, or trees which can block out sunlight, before you invest in solar energy.

You can expect solar systems to last for 20 years or more, so if you decide to install solar panels, it is best if your roof is less than 15

years old. If your roof needs to be repaired or replaced, it would be wise to attend to those problems before you install solar panels to avoid the time and cost to remove and re-install the panels in the future. Typically a home tends to use more electricity at night during a working week, but this is when your solar system won’t produce any solar energy. So it may be a good idea to combine your source of energy by using both solar energy and the utility company, to make up for when there is no sunlight and no energy when it is needed. If you’re considering installing solar panels in your home and need more information, seek advice from a solar installation professional. For more information about energy efficient options, visit the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) at: www.eeca.govt.nz

Get switched on If you’ve got an electrician working on your home – do you know your rights and responsibilities?

Well, in a bid to help homeowners, a consumer campaign by the Electrical Workers Registration Board [EWRB] is trying to raise awareness of these rights and responsibilities when getting electrical work done.

Registrar of Electrical Worker Licensing at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), John Sickels says the EWRB has a duty under the Electricity Act 1992 to promote safety for all New Zealanders by ensuring the competence of electrical workers. The online campaign began in late October and will run until the end of February, using a mix of social media channels such as Facebook, as well as popular news websites like Stuff and

The online campaign has four simple key messages for consumers: • There are rules when doing electrical work in your home or business • Make sure your electrical worker is licensed to do your job before completing the work • Ask electrical workers to certify completed work • To find a licensed electrical worker go to www.ewrb.govt.nz NZ Herald. Trade Me, YouTube and Google Display Network are also being used, as well as a comprehensive Google AdWords campaign.

“Many homeowners are not aware of these rules and may not realise that uncertified electrical work can cause serious harm, such as electrocution,” John says. “Uncertified work may also affect a homeowner’s insurance policy, as most house insurance policies do not cover damage to the home that is caused by poor workmanship.

“Our aim is that by the end of the campaign in late February 2015, as many homeowners as possible will be aware that safe electrical work is work that is completed by a licensed electrical worker and is certified.” More info on the campaign can be found at: www.ewrb.govt. nz/dontgetleftinthedark/

Renovations

The right roof By Laura Hall

Chances are you haven’t thought about the health of your home’s roof in quite sometime and you are not alone. Roofs are often the first feature to be forgotten about or pushed to the side when it comes to home improvements. But a poorly maintained roof could spell disaster for your home, making it susceptible to leaks, water damage and drafts. Summer’s warm, dry weather is the perfect time to take stock of your roof’s condition and assess if it needs minor repairs or a complete overhaul.

If you find any sign of damage or deterioration to your roof then it will need to be fixed. Often small sections of roof can be replaced if the problem is isolated however, if the damage is widespread you may need to consider replacing your entire roof.

Material options

Roof check up It is easy enough to assess the condition of your roof without the help of a professional. Pull out the ladder and perform a visual inspection just by looking at the exterior. Your visual inspection should include looking for elements of broken, cracked or missing tiles, loose material around chimneys or vents, signs of mould, rot or moisture and any indication of sagging or slumping. It is also a good idea to examine your gutters and clear any debris that is blocking water from properly draining off the roof. Poorly maintained gutters can damage the roof and force you to replace it before its lifespan is up.

Re-roofing your entire home can be a costly job, so it is important to make a smart decision about which material will best suit your home. Here are a few key considerations about roof materials to take into account to help you choose the right roof for your home.

Concrete tiles Concrete tiles are less expensive than clay tiles and very versatile because they can be made to look like clay, wood or slate tiles. Concrete is fire resistant, long lasting and low maintenance, but it can break. And like clay tiles concrete tiles require reinforced roof framing to support their weight.

Clay tiles Clay tiles are extremely durable and non-combustible which means they have a long lifespan of 50 plus years. They come in a wide range of shapes, textures and colours, including many light colours which can reflect more than 50 percent of the sun’s heat. But because clay tiles are extremely heavy they require additional roof framing to hold their weight.

Asphalt shingles Asphalt shingles are a popular choice due to the low cost, range of colours, ease of installation and versatility, as they can be used for any style of roof. However, they have a short lifespan compared to many other options on the market of 15 to 30 years. Plus they have the worst environmental track record because they are made from petroleum products that are not recyclable.

Slate Slate tiles are a sizable financial commitment, but their longevity more than makes up for the price. They can last for hundreds of years making slate an excellent, sustainable roofing option. While Slate is a durable material it can be broken if stepped on and finding a replacement tile can be difficult because they are made in one-off batches.

Metal Metal roofs are some of the coolest roofs around, both in temperature and style for new homes. Metal roofs are available in copper, aluminium and stainless steel, and often have a high percentage of recycled content. They offer high insulation solar reflectance and durability, often lasting twice as long as wood or asphalt. Aside from its longevity, metal is much lighter than most materials and very resistance to adverse weather.

Design

Ever wanted to design

your own home?

Renovating your home is one thing, but now you can become a draughtsperson who produces plans for building consent – and it’s much easier than you might think and easier than ever before. Until now this has not been possible without several years of university attendance. But a new application process called Draught Right, combined with the specially adapted computer aided design and automated draughting software means previously inexperienced operators can produce plans in a remarkably short time. New Zealand inventor and home design professional, Paul Rivers has spent the last eight years developing the Draught Right product.

Paul says many successful sales have been made, with inexperienced purchasers already beginning to acquire building consents for new houses, renovations and additions.

Sales so far also include builders wishing to expand their current services into design and build companies, as well as existing licensed draughting professionals wishing to accelerate their rate of production and attain consistent accuracy over their work.

Before finding Draught Right 38 year old former film technician and Wellington man, Craig Farrand had limited experience within the building industry. Since purchasing it in mid July he has been operating the product from home. During this time Craig has obtained several building consents from his work using Draught Right and is excited about the opportunities which lie ahead in this field. At his current rate of learning and production, Craig intends to become a licensed draughtsman at some stage later next year. Until then his house and building plans are peer reviewed and certified for council approval using the online help desk that facilitates the Draught Right product. Inventor Paul Rivers says “There seems to be no shortage of foreign investors willing to come onboard, but the whole thing is

taking off that well on its own, that I cant help but feel a bit choosey about which guy I want to work with in future. “The investors’ funds will be used to market this product into a household name and also to achieve accreditation from International Accreditation New Zealand. After which each set of plans produced, once certified by the online help desk, will also simultaneously grant the building consent over the structural element of every set of plans. “This consenting addition to the product in future will allow the general public, who require plans for building consent, to have their applications approved much faster, cheaper and more accurately.”

Windows and doors… so what is it to be? A decision that many homeowners face when looking to start a self-build project or update their home, is deciding on their windows and doors. When choosing and comparing windows and doors you should be prepared to ask the right questions and more importantly be able to evaluate the quality of the answer. Talking to experts and using the internet to research each material will enable you to make a reasoned decision. Weighing up the pros and cons is not always easy but you can be confident knowing that by choosing wood you are deciding in favour of your health and that of the environment not to mention unparalleled beauty. Windows and doors have a significant impact on comfort as well as heating and cooling bills. As we all know wood, being a natural insulator, is energy efficient with the highest insulation values on the market. It breathes, is strong, reduces CO2 levels and is biodegradable. Designed and manufactured specifically for each project, we at Eurotech Windoors manufacture in solid wood, delivering a genuine European style product for New Zealand conditions with almost unlimited design options. The size of our windows and doors is only limited by the available glass size

– which means we can do things that PVC and Aluminium can’t do. We combine the use of double or triple glazing as standard with FSC® oak or Larch, to create truly beautiful and sustainable windows and doors. Combined with double tenon joints, this means our windows and doors are built to last. Eurotech Windoors European-style windows and doors, which have been used elsewhere in the world for generations, are a renewable, non-toxic choice for your home. Quality timber windows will outlast every other type of material used for windows if properly maintained. Studies overseas on product life-cycles show that the dense timbers used in our windows and doors will last 2-3 times that of Aluminium or PVC - that makes our windows and doors the most costeffective on the market! Handcrafted in Dunedin by our top joiners since 2007, Eurotech Windoors products are of the highest quality and are used in projects all over New Zealand - in particular Christchurch and surrounds. We manufacture a finished product including the frame, glass, hardware and painting. We offer a large selection of hardware and an unlimited choice of colours and stains.

0800 946 3667 |

One of the questions we often get asked is regarding maintenance. Our windows and doors are spray coated in the factory for a fantastic-looking, non-toxic finish of your colour and are easily maintainable once installed. Our hardware which is imported from Germany, is very robust, durable and 3D adjustable – enabling you to adjust your windows and doors in case of earthquakes or foundation settling after new builds. No more jams or drafts! In addition, our windows and doors are more secure - with multi-point locking gear systems which meet the European standards – peace of mind and security for your home when you are away. Whether you’re after just replacing an old small bathroom window or an entire building worth of doors & windows we can offer a solution for your project. As specialists in the market for design & innovation of door & window solutions, Eurotech Windoors not only offers a beautiful unparalleled product, but also exceptional service. With years of experience in the industry, we can be sure to provide the ideal solution for your needs.

Elegant,

functional living

Drawing on 1970 modernist forms this award winning home appears to be effortlessly simple in design and execution. We talk to architect, Cymon Allfrey, about what makes the Leinster house in Merivale stand out from the crowd.

What was the design brief?

The brief was to create a modest, contemporary home designed to accommodate the day to day needs of a couple, while being able to expand with the intermittent return of their adult children. How did you achieve this? As a response to the gardened local street scene, we set the house generously back from the road. Entering the narrow site centrally you are flanked by solid, single level stained cedar (the garage) and basalt forms. Once inside the home the entrance gallery bisects the length of the house, offering a central hub that is crossed as you move between the utility, living and sleeping areas. Operating as though a separate apartment, 26 | B&R

secondary sleeping and living spaces are found on the first floor and easily shut off when the children aren’t in residence. How is outdoor entertaining integrated into the design? Informal outdoor entertaining was a key factor for the homeowners and one which we were able to achieve with the logical positioning of sliding doors connecting the inside and outdoor rooms with ease. For example, the kitchen effortlessly connects to the northern outdoor kitchen and sun-filled east courtyard. Does ‘green’ design come into this home? We wanted the architecture of the home and the planning of the spaces to provide effective passive thermal gain and ventilation.

Carefully placed windows and eaves wrap the northern sides of the home, ensuring thermal energy is brought into the building in a controlled manner, while maintaining privacy. The central gallery two-level void is a critical element of the home’s passive ventilation as it achieves a ‘thermal chimney’ that in turn contributes to achieving an air conditioning free home.

What makes this house special? The use of materials and finishes certainly help this home stand out from the crowd. We wanted the continuity of finishes to offer consistency throughout the home, which contributes to the simple, yet effective aesthetic result. ‘Fingers’ of joinery are placed to divide living spaces, and their dark stained finish contrasts with the muted palate of colour.

0800 346 586 www.durasteel.co.nz As well as being awarded the Supreme Award at the 2011 ADNZ National Architectural Design Awards, the home has been recognised regionally; a feat, which thrills both myself and the homeowners.

AGILITY ASBESTOS REMEDIATION SOLUTIONS Ltd

YOU MAY HAVE ASBESTOS floors

New asbestos website launched for Canterbury homeowners Homeowners undertaking repairs and renovations in Canterbury can now access a website to learn about the risks associated with asbestos and how these are best managed.

The site, www.asbestosaware.co.nz, was developed by the Combined Health and Environment Risks Programme Control Group (CHER) which is made up of government and local body agencies working on the rebuild. WorkSafe New Zealand CHER spokesperson, Kathryn Heiler says “With over 130,000 homes in the Canterbury region, and a large proportion of those undergoing repairs, it’s important that homeowners and small contractors understand the risks associated with asbestos and receive the best advice to manage that risk. “It’s imperative that homeowners and small contractors in Christchurch are aware of the requirement to manage asbestos carefully. Asbestos Aware provides a one stop shop where they can access this information,” she says. Anyone who is about to embark on repairs and renovations should check out the website and make sure they are familiar with what asbestos looks like, how to test to confirm it is present and then how to manage it, if confirmed in your home. Asbestos creates a health risk only if it is disturbed or broken up and fibres are released into the air. Don’t expose yourself and your family to this risk. If homeowners are commencing work and they think asbestos is involved, take precautions to manage the risk.

Houses built, altered or refurbished between 1940 and up to the 1990s may contain asbestos and the only way to know for sure whether it is present is to have it tested. It is estimated that more than 70,000 dwellings in Christchurch have asbestos containing materials present. Asbestos Aware encourages homeowners to contract appropriately qualified people to test for and manage the removal of asbestos. Remnants of disturbed asbestos can remain in the home long term if removal is not managed correctly. This can impact on future owners who may be unaware of work that has been undertaken. As a result, it is important that removal is carefully managed.

DIY tips

Sometimes the best fixes are the simplest. Bunning’s have put together a list of 15 DIY tips anyone can use anyday. 1 Measure twice and cut once

3 Always unwind extension cords

This may sound like an obvious one, but it’s a surprisingly common mistake. It always pays to double-check your measurements to make sure they are accurate before you cut.

It pays to not take any risks with electricity; coiled cables get hot and can cause fires. Be careful where you run your cords. It’s a good idea to run them along a wall or tape them down to avoid tripping over them.

2 Rub the edge of your saw with soap

4 Avoid washing paintbrushes between coats

Make your sawing easier and smoother by rubbing soap on the cutting edge of your saw. You can also rub soap on the head of your screws to make them easier to screw in.

Instead wrap them tightly in cling film or plastic bags - this will keep them moist until the next coat.

BEYOND STORAGE

By Ann-Marie Appleton

AFFORDABLE QUALITY STORAGE SOLUTIONS The best part of summer for me is spending more time outside and I really love the blurring of indoor and outdoor styles, and in today’s world of interior design it is very apparent and becoming more accepted.

It not only looks amazing, it increases the size of your home and makes it feel larger and more inviting for maybe/hopefully six months of the year. It really is possible to have couches, arm chairs, side tables, hammocks, coffee tables, rugs, dining table, and chairs all out under the open skies! All of these items can help you create specific seating areas, or an outdoor kitchen/cooking area, so that it is as comfortable as being inside. Outdoor fabrics have undergone a revolution and are available in bold, block colours, geometric shapes, as well as the trusty plains and stripes. Try having fun with ‘Tropicana’ - it all started with pineapples and parrots, and now bananas and flamingoes are out there too. It’s not a look that will last long and is quite kitsch, but would liven up an outdoor entertainment area.

figure can add up, so it’s important you’re choosing items based on quality first to stand the test of time and harsh outdoor elements.

Try having fun with ‘Tropicana’ it all started with pineapples and parrots, and now bananas and flamingoes are out there too. It’s not a look that will last long and is quite kitsch, but would liven up an outdoor entertainment area.

Indoor furniture tends to be seen as an investment for most of us, especially the bed and couches. Thinking of your outdoor furniture as an investment will ensure the long lasting appeal will make the savings worth it.

• Wardrobe designs with a difference • Free in-home no obligation quote • 15 year guarantee • Locally owned and operated • 100% customer satisfaction • Designed to suit all requirements

BBQs get bigger and better every year and along with pizza ovens make summer cooking more fun, varied and sociable. Don’t forget electrical lighting, which is crucial in a garden. It extends your use of outdoor space and allows you to highlight aspects of the garden such as a beautiful tree or an interesting wall, especially at night.

Outdoor furniture is also keeping up the pace. Timber and teak look really cool together and last forever. Wicker is now available in more colours with the introduction of new techniques in making the woven strands out of weather resistant and easy to dye polyester.

And like we do indoors, buying new platters, serving trays, glasses, jugs, candles, cushions and throws can really update your outdoor area each summer and is relatively inexpensive.

Although buying low quality furniture may save you money in the immediate future, you’ll find it will need to be replaced every two - three years. Even at a low price this

Brushing up It is amazing the difference a coat of paint can make. Whether repainting existing colours or adding new colours, a fresh paint job is an affordable and easy way to revitalise the home.

Bunnings National Paint, paint accessories and storage buyer, Aaron Mikaere, provides top tips on how to give the home a fresh paint job for spring.

• Get creative by matching paint colours to your couches, cushions, chairs, artwork and more. Experimenting with different paint colours can be a fun way to brighten the home’s interior and add new life for a much needed revamp • Painting can get messy, so place a drop sheet in the room being painted. Tape the drop sheet to the floor around the perimeter of the room to make sure it doesn’t slip

• Preparation is key. Take the time to properly clean, smooth and dry each wall before painting. If unsure of what tools to use head to your local Bunnings warehouse and speak to an expert team member

• Your home is your haven so choose colours that reflect your personality. Choose colours that suit the style of the home such as warm shades, bold bright colours, soft pastels or subtle nude tones • For once it’s okay to draw on the walls! Create a trendy chalkboard wall by using black chalkboard paint

Your home is your haven so choose colours that reflect your personality.

• Add a feature wall to enhance colour and brighten up any room. This can be done easily by choosing a bold colour of paint and applying it to one wall of a room. For the remaining walls, paint a complementary colour to accentuate the effects of the feature wall

• Mix it up by using different paints. Paints now come in a variety of different features including metallic, silk, suede and stone, and can be used to create the ideal textured look for every room

• Don’t forget to clean up. Always wash brushes and rollers thoroughly using the correct cleaning products. Store all equipment in a cool dry place to ensure they are in peak condition for the next project. For more information on Bunnings’ range of paint products and accessories, please visit www.bunnings.co.nz or speak to an expert team member at your local store.

Channel drains Large, luxurious tiled showers are the current thing in any new bathroom; the new must-have drain to complete the tiled shower look is the channel drain.

These stylish, simple and functional drains feature long, narrow troughs that sit flush with the shower floor. They can be positioned anywhere in the shower, but are normally placed hard up against the wall to create a seamless, invisible look. Depending on the amount of water that requires drainage, one or up to four channel strips can be used.

The discreet channel drains are popular in tiled showers because

they offer an uninterrupted look; no need to cut tiles around the traditional round centred drain. If you have concerns that the barely there appearance of the channel drain could result in water flooding across the entire bathroom floor, then you are not the only one - but rest assured this sleek twist on the standard drain is an extremely effective method of controlling water.

Container gardens and large vases are an excellent way to benefit from the striking seasonal flowers that flourish in summer. Wall or hanging gardens are also a popular option, especially for those who want to bring the garden inside and brighten up a wall. Succulents, lettuces and herbs are great options that work well in wall gardens and are easy to maintain. A great outdoor living area increases the usability of our home and its ability to accommodate your lifestyle. This is achieved by using the latest garden trends to create new or refine your existing living spaces into exciting and inviting outdoor areas. The big landscape and garden trends in 2015 tend to focus on personalising your outdoor space to accent your lifestyle.

This revolves around the themes of sustainability, detail and colour. When it comes to the garden, companion planting is a strong trend for the coming year. The objective of this method is to create a community of plants that will thrive together and grow in a low maintenance and selfsustaining way. Sustainable materials with eco-friendly attributes are also a must. These include green roofs, rain gardens, green walls and permeable pavers. Bring new life to your existing garden with colourful furniture and accents. Colour is one of the easiest ways to update your garden and it is one of the most prominent factors in garden design - it is what most people are drawn to. Good garden design includes an understanding of various colour combinations and how they work. Common themes include contrasting or complementary colours, harmonious combinations or selecting one hue and using various shades and tones for dramatic effect. If in doubt, go with the less is more theory. A monochromatic scheme can be a great approach for beginners and it allows the texture and repetition of plants and species to define the space. You can always experiment and add more as you develop your eye for colour and what works for your garden. Professional landscape architects and designers can produce quick concept sketches as a starting point for you and many offer a consultation service where they visit your home, offer gardening tips and advice and generate design ideas for your outdoors on the spot. G E T YO U R D R E A M G A R D E N U N D E R WAY The owners of Canterbury Trellis and The Planter Box, Barry and Anna are on a mission to save the world. Well maybe not save the world, but at least their little corner of it. They’re doing this by promoting the use of sustainable Macrocarpa and Oregon timbers for planter boxes and raised garden beds, because it is safer for the environment, for you and your family. Canterbury Trellis only manufactures their planters and beds in untreated timber when being used for growing edible plants. Pine is a softwood and has to be treated to avoid rotting, these treatments called CCA preservatives can cross into the soil

and ultimately your food, and they contain the following poisons and cancer forming carcinogens: Copper, Arsenic and Chromium. The natural grains and saps in Macrocarpa and Oregon mean these timbers provide a safer and eco-friendly alternative. Sustainability is core to their beliefs and this view is not just about planter boxes, because as keen gardeners they also understand the savings that can be made from “growing your own” as well as the rewards of freshly grown food. Barry says that supermarket suppliers chemically treat vegetables and fruits to last longer on the shelves, but they will never beat the fresh and crisp taste of vegetables from your own garden. Worthy of note is gardening and closeness to the soil and nature has a proven positive effect on mood, stress and wellbeing.

AN IDEAL SOLUTION FOR MODERN GARDENS In the last six years planter boxes have become a growing trend around homes, with many customers opting for the ease and convenience of raised gardens, whether starting fresh within a new subdivision or landscaping with a rebuild. With the decrease in property sizes there is often less space for home gardening however, this does not have to be the case and there are simple space saving solutions that also look great.

Canterbury Trellis manufactures a variety of options which can all be custom built to suit your individual requirements, from a range of patio style planter boxes thru to large raised garden beds. Also catered for are the elderly, or those with physical limitations, who still want to be active gardeners via raised sections, as well as high planters with shelves for easy access. Home security

Home security tips when you go on holiday Before you head out the door for that great summer getaway, take a little time to ensure you’ve done what you can to protect your home while you’re away. Tidy up around the house

Ensure anything that could help thieves break into your house is safely stored in the garage, such as ladders, axes, hammers and saws. Disconnect electronics

Unplug TV sets, stereos, computers and other electronics or ensure they are plugged into a surge protector. Be careful who you tell Don’t announce your vacation plans on social media sites and don’t advertise your absence on your phone answering machine. Also, only post travel pictures when you are back. Lock it up Double check that you’ve locked all doors and windows, set the alarm and haven’t forgotten about the garage. Make your home look lived in Remove valuables from clear sight and leave curtains and blinds as they would normally be, because noticeable changes in your home’s typical appearance hint that you are away. Also consider using light switch timers that turn lights on and off automatically. Cancel your newspaper Another sign that screams ‘we’re away’ is newspapers piled up on your doorstep or driveway. Turn down the ring tone on your phone Nothing says ‘nobody’s home’ like a long, loud, unanswered phone ringing.

If you’re going to be away for an extended period, you may want to ask a friend or neighbour to pop over once a week to check on things. Also make sure that they know how to reach you if something happens. Ask a friend or neighbour to help

Tell a trusted neighbour that you are going away and arrange for them to collect your mail, because an overflowing mailbox says the same thing a collection of newspapers does – ‘we’re not here, so come on in and help yourself’. If you’re going to be away for an extended period, you may want to ask a friend or neighbour to pop over once a week to check on things. Also make sure that they know how to reach you if something happens. B&R | 45

Kiwi ingenuity helps create miniature smoke alarm A New Zealander has helped create the world’s smallest smoke alarm, giving Kiwis a more stylish, discreet and long lasting option when installing smoke alarms.

The CAVIUS Miniature Smoke Alarm is just 40 mm wide and combines the best photoelectric safety features with a sleek, unique design.

CAVIUS APS, the Danish parent company and design team. Smith says smoke alarms have never been considered fashionable before. “But the Danes excel in that area. They have transformed the common domestic smoke alarm into a designer product – without the designer price tag.” Since its launch CAVIUS has sold more than 1.5 million smoke alarms worldwide.

And with a long life 10 year battery, it offers a practical solution for people who get frustrated with having to climb up and replace their smoke alarm batteries each year.

CAVIUS alarms retail for $59.90 each. They are more affordable long term than the cheapest smoke alarms on the New Zealand market as there is no battery replacement cost every year.

The tiny alarm is a collaboration between CAVIUS Nano, a New Zealand-based company founded by Peter Smith of Papamoa, and

“The cost of buying new batteries each time daylight savings rolls adds up to $120 over 10 years,” Smith says. “Plus there is always the

issue of taking the old one down with the best intensions of replacing the battery, but never actually doing so.” CAVIUS features an 85 decibel alarm at three metres distance, has a 10 minute pause option, 30 day low battery alert, is easy to install and is environmentally friendly. It is also NZ Building Code compliant. “While it was important to create something which looks stylish in people’s homes, at the end of the day it is designed to save people’s lives. So the safety features were paramount.” Last year, the New Zealand Fire Service attended in excess of 3,700 house fires. In more than 80 percent of those fires, smoke alarms were either not installed or not working.

Most fire fatalities occur in homes while people are asleep because they cannot smell smoke. There are two types of smoke alarms available on the market; the traditional ionized alarms with the replacement batteries, or the highly recommended photoelectric alarms. You will find Fire Departments internationally recommend householders install photoelectric ones with long life batteries – such as CAVIUS. They provide more effective allround detection and alarm in all types of fire scenarios and are less likely to false alarm. For your nearest retailer go online to: www.cavius.co.nz.
