Welcome

This issue of Build & Renovate Today delves into the sumptuousness of colour and arrangement, kicking off with the award-winning Glandovey Home, heading north to a fabulously renovated church, and then walking into the vivid world of magenta.

We embrace the wonderful individuality of Moroccan inspired design, and buck the trend with a look at maximalism for those who relish a touch of clutter.

There are pieces on creating kidsfree havens, building home gyms, repurposing furniture, springing back into your garden and outdoor entertainment areas, and how simple design remade a tired kitchen, plus lots more.

Enjoy.

Grandeur on

Glandovey

With a striking, soaring pitched roof that runs the length of the house, this award-winning home has privacy from the street, while being open to its North facing garden. The interior spaces can be opened up for entertaining but can also be compartmentalised for the more intimate day-to-day needs of the family.

The overall design of the property, called Glandovey Home, is organised around a central entry gallery which sits below a soaring volume created by the sloping Meranti ply ceiling.

The architect, Cymon Allfrey, won the Residential New Home over 300m2 Architectural Design Award, for this work, at the ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Glandovey Home was praised by judges for being an “individualist” but at the same time sitting nicely with its surrounds.

“This building, although an individualist, sits well within the context of its surroundings. Its approach from the street is both sympathetic and private, while still providing a grand and alluring entry,” they said.

“Simple forms come together in a considered way, so the pitched roof feels as though it is lightly floating on the darker cedar box of the building.”

A Resene Architectural Design Award, presented by Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ), is one of the most coveted architecture awards in the country.

Changing designation

Giving an old church a new lease of life

Repurposing buildings sometimes makes for the coolest properties and this stunning renovation is a classic example.

It involved strengthening and restoring a 135-year-old church into three spacious townhouses, each adorned with original features, to create unique living spaces.

All three apartments have generously sized bedrooms and plenty of space in their openplan layouts.

Colour and warmth are radiated from the floor level up through sweeping stairways via the use of natural oak, and each of the apartments features original high stud timber ceilings. Recessed balconies within the roof line provide indoor-outdoor flow and enhance natural light inside.

Each front entrance features upcycled stained glass panes, originally set above the church altar, helping to connect the apartments to the previous spirit of the building.

The interior spaces are a cohesive mix of modern, high-end finishings, carefully chosen to complement original features.

The Petone-based project, built by Spice Build, won the Bunnings Renovation over $1 million title at the Registered Master Builders’ House of the Year Awards.

Spice Build say that by working entirely within the envelope of the original church, three spacious, two-level character town houses have been created, each adorned with original features from the buildings past.

Viva Magenta

Brighten your world with the 2023 Pantone colour of the year

Pantone colour of the year has been setting colour trends since the turn of the century. They specialise in colour systems and have become the easiest way to classify and communicate colours by way of a colour catalogue.

Every colour, in every tone and tint has been given a number to identify it. Announced every December, the chosen colour influences industries for the year to come and we see this colour showcased in many ways, from

fashion brands and home design, to marketing trends and social media.

The colour is chosen by a committee of analysts from the Pantone Colour Institute who diligently comb through past colour trends and take into consideration all aspects of society.

Inspiration is taken from leading design industries, travel, art, entertainment, technology and more; all of which influence the impact that colour has on our lives. Patterns are analysed and the experts

look to the coming year to create a colour forecast.

2023’s colour of the year was announced last December as Viva Magenta 18-1750. This is a colour rooted in nature and is an explosion of deep raspberry. Viva Magenta is bold enough to break the mould while remaining accessible and surprisingly versatile across a variety of contexts. The use of this shade in a home is fearless and encourages self-expression without restraint.

Naturally, magenta hails from the red family which exudes warmth

and depth but with the mix of violet it creates an animated shade that electrifies a room.

Home décor enthusiasts who enjoy an excuse to revamp their space eagerly await the reveal of Pantones newest colour of the year.

This year’s vibrant colour is brilliant enough to add a pop to any space. Whether you are using the shade to dominate a room, or subtly highlight certain aspects of your space, Viva Magenta makes a statement. The vivid colour is compatible with many hues which allows exploration when decorating.

All grown up Creating a kids-free haven

Fed up with constantly picking up toys just to have a space to sit? Do you crave a place to relax and unwind, away from the daily chaos – and the kids? It might be time to reclaim your space and design an adult-only haven in your home.

Before you work out the specifics, know what to avoid. Mancaves and she-sheds are somewhat outdated concepts today, but at their heart lies an important self-care reminder. Don’t follow hard interior design rules that perpetuate gender stereotypes. Instead, renovate with a focus on adaptability and inclusivity fit for all adults.

Consider the purpose of your haven

Determine the layout, statement pieces, and intention behind your space – is it for entertainment and technology, relaxation, or both?

If you have many uses in mind, opt for an open and flexible layout. Cosier rooms can be more structured, with seating anchored in the centre, but you can achieve versatility by integrating reading nooks or gaming spaces that don’t overpower the room.

Modular furniture and multifunctional tables cater to many needs and ensure this flexibility in rec rooms.

If your priority is entertainment, create the right ambiance with adjustable lighting. Install sound and television systems with audio distribution and the overall atmosphere in mind.

Automated smart home systems shine in child-free spaces, and allow you to manage the entire system with just a button or voice command, so take advantage of them. While you’re at it, any tech-driven lounge room might as well be extended into an athome theatre!

If entertaining guests is more your style, mancave classics like a wet bar, pool table, or welcoming seating area are popular for good reason. A gender-neutral adult space has greater event hosting potential than the traditional mancave anyway.

For those making a tranquil sanctuary, indulge in plush sofas and oversized armchairs

so luxurious you forget the mess beyond the door. By using durable and stylish materials such as leather and upholstery you can achieve a classy aesthetic that will also stand the test of time.

Materials like velvet, silk, marble, and metals add a mature, refined touch. Thoughtful art pieces and statement accessories can also

Beyond this, if your layout allows, convert it into a home gym and break a sweat at home, or into a workshop for your do-it-yourself

projects. The possibilities are truly endless when you have a focused plan.

Creating an adult-only space takes careful planning and attention to detail, but it’s absolutely worth it. the art of

Obsessed with excess maximalism

Maximalism is a design style that celebrates colour, patterns, and layering. You may also be familiar with minimalism, which is known for its clean and sometimes brutalist approach. Maximalism is increasingly popular, especially among Gen Z-ers who embrace its philosophy of excess.

What maximalism isn’t though is unorganised chaos, or throwing everything into a space and calling it a day. Instead, it’s a curated, deliberate, and thoughtful aesthetic. Don’t be intimidated; there’s fun to be had for everyone in the school of more-is-more.

Colour

Colour is essential to maximalism. Its bold shades and fearless contrasts will bring life to any space. Go for unapologetic wallpaper and statement pieces sure to impress. Consider a funky gallery wall of prints and photos to bring pizzazz to blank walls. Lively, patterned rugs help divide spaces while adding pops of colour to neutral floors. Even bathrooms, laundries, and utility rooms come to life with a burst of colour. Maximising colour in your home can transform it into a bright and beautiful haven.

Clash

Maximalism challenges you to pair loud patterns and jarring prints. Revel in the over-thetop anarchy of animal, floral, and abstract patterns and add interest by way of pillows, blankets, rugs, and wallpapers.

At the heart of maximalism lies an urge to push boundaries and mix things up. Marry your eclectic interests together and

combine vintage pieces with modern wonders to create a timeless interior. Play with texture by juxtaposing soft furs and fabrics with hard natural materials. Contrast cultures and blend souvenirs and styles from across the globe to perfectly reflect you. No matter how you do it, clash and clash some more.

Collect

Historically, extravagant home décor was a showcase of wealth. Nowadays, maximalists care more about showcasing their collectibles and injecting individuality into spaces. Maximalism invites you to marvel in the multiple and show off those personal trinkets and vast collections. Less is a bore!

Ease into maximalism with a bookshelf project. Sort books by colour or size to please the eye. Style books alongside decorative objects to give your accent wall some dimension. Bookshelves are a great storage solution and a good reminder that maximalism has few limits.

Beyond shelves, stacked books make neat columns to set lights and tchotchkes on, and we can all agree that no coffee table is complete without books to flick through.

Layering plants of different shapes and textures can create an immersive indoor forest

Historically, extravagant home décor was a showcase of wealth. Nowadays, maximalists care more about showcasing their collectibles and injecting individuality into spaces.

within a room. Big leafy palms are show-stopping pieces that can anchor and enliven spaces. Hang lush plants from different heights for maximum impact, and look into low-maintenance alternatives like air plants which derive nutrients from moist air for wet areas.

Culture

While minimalism focuses on productivity and well-being, maximalism sees design as a means of expressing positivity, creativity, and curiosity. Maximalism reminds us that buying more is unnecessary, and that we should enjoy excess purposefully.

When curating your home to match you, remember that like our personalities, our homes cannot have it all.

Maximalism takes courage, an omnivorous desire to express oneself in as many wonderful and distinct ways possible, and an ability to see the value in an excess obsession. The power of maximalism is that it enables you to explore and follow your design desires away from restricting rules and yearly trends.

Congratulations on reaching the end of maximalism school! Our best students never stop learning.

Fitness chic

Creating the home gym of your dreams

You’re excited, you’re committed, you’re ready… but you have no idea where to start! Whether you’re an avid fitness junkie, or looking to slowly ease into your health journey, it can be difficult to know where to begin when setting up your own home gym.

It’s important to think aesthetics as well as functionality when it comes to designing a home gym. You wouldn’t want to spend a whole lot of time in a room that was cold and dingy, but a well-lit, warm room will encourage productivity. A space that looks and feels inviting will do wonderous things for your motivation and ensure you’re using the space regularly.

Plan your space

Unless you’re lucky enough to have a dedicated full-size gym, most of us have to make our existing spaces work for this purpose. This most likely means converting the spare bedroom or garage into something practical. Consider your available space and how you will make it work for you, particularly how much equipment will safely fit while still allowing you enough room to move around freely.

Say yes to wall colour

Adding a lick of paint or a wallpapered feature wall is the easiest way to change up a room. Something to really think about when choosing a colour is the impact it has on your mood. The experts say yellow is a mood booster while pale blues mellow us out. A question to ask yourself is, how do I need this space to serve me? If your focus is yoga and meditation, you’ll want a relaxing colour whereas if you plan on high intensity workouts, an energising colour will work best.

Keep organised

A gym can be a dangerous place if not kept well organised and tidy. Avoid accidents by having dedicated homes for all your equipment and accessories. Consider building in shelving or racks for your free weights if you have the freedom to do so, or shop around to find the best storage option to keep your equipment from becoming a trip hazard.

24 | B&R Useful Spaces

Function comes first

The ultimate goal of any design project is to utilise the space. In order to achieve a practical home gym, make sure anything in your space has more than one purpose. It’s hard to justify sacrificing precious floor space to a single function machine that you can only use for one exercise.

Instead, go for versatile strength equipment that can be adjusted for a variety of goals.

Music and entertainment

The right music is a huge motivation for movement. It’s important to have your favourite music playing to encourage you to push through your workout.

Whether you chose to install a full sound system, or you’re using a portable speaker, think about what tunes will get you the most energised. Alternatively, set a TV in your gym. This is a great option if you’re planning to follow online classes or workout videos. A wall mounted TV is also great for those who need a bit of distraction during those rough cardio sessions.

Visual learning

You probably already know that all gyms have at least one wall of mirrors. This does serve a purpose other than for flexing! Working out in front of a mirror is the best way to watch your form allowing you to correct and encourage safe movements.

Mirrors also make a room feel bigger and brighter which is perfect for a makeshift gym.

Decorate safely

Decorate your home gym with enthusiasm but keep it practical. Make the space inviting and aesthetically pleasing but keep safety at the forefront of any designing. Making it Refurbishing and repurposing furniture

Furniture these days can be unbelievably expensive if you don’t have the savings for it. Many people turn to secondhand furniture, but it can be hard to know what to trust - be it the structure, the paint, the fabric and the lifespan.

Avid woodworkers usually turn to DIY (do it yourself) projects and so can you! If you have the tools and need new ideas on how you can build your furniture, look no further!

Dining tables are something that every household has and needs. Sitting around the dinner table as a family on Christmas, a birthday or another celebration are some of the most cherished moments.

If you have just moved into your first house and need a new table or have a flimsy one already and are looking for a sturdy table, perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner we have you sorted for your first DIY project!

You would never think that an old door would make a great tabletop, which is perfect for renovators who are looking to replace their doors.

Comfort is a big aspect when it comes to choosing the perfect furniture in your home, especially when you need multiple places to sit, in your living room, dining area, office space and bedroom.

If you need more comfy seating options in your home and want to add a bit of creative flare to your lounge, then why not refurbish an old coffee table?

Firstly, you’ll need to make sure that your coffee table is robust enough for sitting purposes.

If you want to match your couch, grab some fabric and cushioning to create an ottoman for more comfy seating.

Or easily fix up the table into a wooden bench, which could be added to your lounge or even outside in the garden with some nice pillows. If you are someone who loves a good cocktail or wine night and loves having guests over to join the party, why not show off all your liquors, bottles and cocktail gear?

You don’t need to have thousands of dollars to get a small bar built into your kitchen, all you need is an old dresser to show off those drinks and accessories.

Once you have debuted your new restyled bar at your next party, be sure that guests will be crawling back for the next one!

Who said that it’s only the humans of the house who need new furniture for their everyday needs? Pets are family as well and they definitely deserve a new accessory every once and awhile!

We know that many pets love whoever gives them food and water, so why not perk up their feeding station with oldfashioned chairs? If you have a medium or large-sized dog, oldfashioned chairs are a great way of giving them access to food and water.

Cutting holes into these chairs and placing your dog’s bowls inside is a great way to feed those doggos!

Whether you’re renovating, moving into a new house or looking for new furniture, refurbishing and restyling other furniture is a fun way to make your home feel more personal. There are many different ways you can restyle furniture, with a quick and easy Google search you will be able to find loads of ideas!

Getting crafty Spicing up thrifted art

If you’re someone who enjoys thrifting or visiting the local second-hand stores, chances are you’ve glanced at the art section. Stacks of old paintings in funky frames and dusty canvases piled into a corner.

This section, while somewhat understated, is often a home decorator’s dream.

With a little know-how and some supplies, you can turn these dilapidated pictures into unique and interesting artworks to decorate your walls.

Frames are something that can really change the feel of a piece of art. If the frame is broken or made in a way that doesn’t suit your aesthetic, it’s a simple fix. Stores such as Kmart and The Warehouse have cheap and modern frames for pretty much any sized picture.

If you’re going for a more customised look, you could make a frame yourself! Bunnings have a great guide to make your own DIY picture frame: www. bunnings.co.nz/diy-advice/kidscraft/craft/how-to-make-a-diypicture-frame.

Alternatively, you can get a frame custom made by companies

such as Frame Fox or El Framo, to name a couple. Even slapping a coat of paint over the existing frame or stripping paint away can really revamp the piece of art.

If a piece needs a bit more than a frame overhaul, you could consider adding your own personal touch to the art itself. For example, a fairly plain picture can really be brought to life with the addition of a creature like a bird or a cat.

Even the addition of a simple silhouette can bring a new breath of life. If you’re feeling a bit more artistic, you can add pretty much anything to the existing picture and give it a new life.

When adding new things to a painting, make sure you know what the picture is painted or printed on and what the most commonly used medium in the piece is.

Ensure you match the mediumwhether it be oil paints, pencils, acrylic paints or something else - as closely as possible.

Another thing to keep in mind is if you want your additions to look seamless, matching the general colour scheme.

If the picture is mostly greens and earth tones, make sure your additions are in those tones too. Unless, of course, you want your additions to stand out completely - in which case, do whatever you like! It’s your unique piece, after all.

For some inspiration, head to Twisted Sifter: www.twistedsifter.

com/2014/07/thrift-storepainting-remixes-by-david-irvine. Sarah Donawerth has some great extra tips for transforming a thrifted art piece at: www.sarahdonawerth.com.

Finally, sometimes all a painting or piece of art needs is a jolly good clean. Removing dust and grime from a piece can bring back its shine and zest for life.

For oil or acrylic on canvas, use a white cotton cloth soaked in gentle soapy water. Be very gentle as you don’t want to ruin the piece. You can also use a Q-tip to get into crevasses in the paint. If you’re struggling to remove grime, consider taking the piece to an expert.

So, all that art tucked away in thrift stores can become something truly wonderful and unique in your home.

All you need is some time and a burst of creativity. From frames and cleaning to adding your own personal touches, it’s a fun way to add some flare to your home.

Springing into your garden

Overcoming winter’s worst

Are you wanting to do a do-over of your garden this spring, or have you just moved houses and want some new ideas on how to landscape your backyard?

Look no further as you can find some new ideas right here!

Whether you want to add new flowers, add some decoration or, maybe even add a pond, then keep on reading for inspiration. The first question you would ask yourself when creating a new garden space is, what do I want to plant?

If you are into growing your vegetables or fruit, then you will need to think about where you want to plant them and what time of year they need to be grown.

If flowers are more your style then figuring out what kind of flowers grow in spring, in your region and generally the breed of flowers you want, can take time to research and plan.

The colour of flowers can be an important part of planning, perhaps you want to have a loud garden, or maybe you want a warm colour scheme for the upcoming spring and summer.

Consider what other colours plants or decor are in the backyard, set the mood or create a pattern. Overall, the choice of which flowers and colours you want to showcase is up to you.

If you plan on maintaining the garden all year round, then perhaps grow some flowers or plants that last most, if not all year round. Or be prepared to add new additions to the garden throughout the year.

According to the Better Homes and Garden website, there are seven tips for beginners landscaping their first garden.

Firstly, you will need to figure out what your garden needs or what you want to add, including plants, flowers, and decoration.

Once you’ve figured out what you want to showcase in your garden, you will need to figure out where to place everything.

This is especially important for your chosen flowers and plants as you’ll need to know where the sun is best located during what time of the day and for how long. Or if you want to add a patio, do you want it to be located in the sun, shade or both?

The best way to figure out where to place things is to spend time in your garden throughout the day.

This way you can figure out how the sun and shade move around and where you will find the place for plants, decoration or patio.

Another great tip mentioned on the Better Homes and Garden website is to focus on scale and pacing. Find out how tall and wide your plants will grow, how much of the same colour do you want?

Make sure you don’t over-clutter your garden unless you want to spend hours trimming and

weeding. Decorating your garden with furnishings can be exciting, picking out what kind of style you want to show off.

There are so many things you can add to your garden and backyard that aren’t just plants and flowers.

You could add a small or large pond, depending on the size of your garden, and add some goldfish to add some wildlife. Or for even more wildlife, build one or two bird feeders, this could make a great DIY (do it yourself) project.

Make a trip to the shop and find some decorations to add, garden lamps, a water fountain and accessories for your outdoor dining area if you have one.

If you’re wanting to plan and create your new garden yourself it can take time to plan and work on, depending on how big of a job you want to do. It may be that it only takes one long weekend if you work every hour of the day.

So why not have a go at a gardening project this spring? Start planning now how you want your outdoor space to look!

Getting your outdoor living area up and running

There are so many ways to upgrade for the warmer season ahead. Starting with an outdoor dining table and chairs, you want to make sure you can still be comfy while you eat.

36 | B&R
Outdoor Living

As winter comes slowly to an end and early spring starts to blossom, it’s that time of the year again when the days are getting longer, making it the perfect time to start spending more time outside.

You may have been spending the last three months eating meals inside and getting cosy with a blanket while watching tv, but now with more daylight in the evening, you’re eager to get into and stay in the sun.

Whether you have an outdoor living area already, or you want to create one, there are so many ways to upgrade for the warmer season ahead. Starting with an outdoor dining table and chairs, you want to make sure you can still be comfy while you eat.

If you haven’t already got chairs that are cushioned, you may want to invest in some soft seat pads or pillows so that you and your guests can be comfy while enjoying a meal.

If you’re after a more loungetype look for your outside area, then possibly investing in buying an outdoor couch or other comfortable seating with pillows and blankets could be what you need to look for.

Adding comfort to your outdoor space may be the best thing you can do so that you can ensure you will use the space more and more.

Once you get into the heat of summer, you’re going to need some shading over your outdoor area, you could build this yourself, or add an awning or sail over the area.

You may also want to figure out where the sun will be affecting the area the most, there’s nothing worse than eating your dinner and the sun is striking right into your eyes! You may not have 24 hours of sun protection, but figure out when you may be using your outdoor area the most.

Spring and summer are upon us, but if you are wanting to

use your outdoor area in the early spring, you may want to think about heating, especially in the evenings.

A fun way to spice up your backyard is adding a firepit, it’s a great way to spend those summer nights roasting marshmallows. Although make sure the firepit is away from the covered area. Or you may want to put your money towards buying an outdoor gas heater, make sure you install it safely where it’s not able to burn anything.

As well as a warm fire, comfy seating and a great atmosphere, barbeques and/or pizza ovens are also a great addition to your outdoor living area. A great way to get friends and family around for a get-together without having to provide a fully prepped meal. Adding some decoration to your outdoor area is a great way to show off the backyard to the neighbours and any guests you have. Fairy lights have become a trend in decorating inside the house, why not hang a few up over your awning? Or adding some plants for a little bit of nature.

There are so many ways you can decorate or convert your backyard into an outdoor living area. It’s never a better time to DIY the area than early spring. Bringing the family and some friends over for a barbeque is a classic New Zealand summer picture, so why not impress everyone with your creative mind and get started on this spring project?

If you are stuck on ideas, Pinterest is a great way to find inspiration or browsing at your closest homeware and building store can help spark ideas. Figure out a theme or colour scheme and go from there!

How to show off your houseplants

Spring is upon us and whether you’re a plant mum or dad, and love a jungle-filled house of plants or if you appreciate one or two plants in a room, then you might be ready to add a spring flare to your collection.

So, you’ve chosen the plants that you want to add to your home, but you’re sick of the boring old way of potting plants, well we’ve got you covered with new ideas on how you can create new ways to show them off!

When starting out for the first time with house plants, keen gardeners usually start with a simple pot and place it on a shelf or on a window sill.

However, after a while, the idea of decorating your house with plants in creative ways becomes an exciting project!

From a bit more decoration on the window sill, or plants hanging from the ceiling to a plant sitting in a wicker basket, there are so many fun ways to decorate your house.

If you are someone who likes the aesthetic of old wooden furniture, then maybe a wicker basket for your plant collection is for you!

Find a perfect-sized wicker basket for whatever size plant you may have and then simply place the already potted plant into the basket.

This ensures you have a stylishlooking pot plant without

even removing it from the original container!

Does your home have wide window sills or, have a bay or bow window design that reaches the ground?

Simply grab some tiles or vinyl and lay them on the ground, this means you can place your plant pots down on the carpet without having to worry about soil or water soaking into the carpet.

Make the space stylish with funky-coloured or patterned tiles!

Talking of windows, if you’re wanting to get rid of a curtain or two in your home because the pattern or colour doesn’t fit your aesthetic, then why not add a bit of lush green colour instead?

Another stylish way to show off your favourite plants is by buying a wooden ladder and placing your selected plants on each rung.

You may not want to change every curtain, but one or two new plant curtains could be your next project.

Dangling a few plants that are known for growing downwards, is a unique way of creating plant curtains.

38 | B&R Plant Life

Some ideas for plants that you could grow for this specific project are:

• Spider Plants

• English Ivy

• String of Beads

• String of Hearts

• Lepismium Bolivianum

• Hoya Linearis.

Simply hang the pots from the curtain railing and let them grow!

Another stylish way to show off your favourite plants is by buying a wooden ladder and placing your selected plants on each rung.

It’s a creative and unique way to display your favourite s maller plants.

When starting out for the first time with house plants, keen gardeners usually start with a simple pot and place it on a shelf or on a window sill.

Another great way to show off your smaller-sized plants is by showcasing them in a small indoor glasshouse.

Finding a material or old shelving made out of glass to create a mini glasshouse may be your exciting way of growing herbs or any other plants that require a dry, warm climate.

You can add ventilation fans, add heat lights and any other equipment you may need to be able to grow your house of plants. There are so many creative ways to show off your houseplants.

Some may be a large project or some may be as easy as painting a pot.

Either way, your plants will be looking snazzy as in their new environment!

Simplicity in action

It’s amazing what an expert designer can achieve and this kitchen renovation, called Bellevue Villa Renovation, is a lovely example.

Designed by Tracey Jones of Kitchen Mania, it won the Creative Small Space Design title at the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards.

The client wanted a new kitchen to be the heart of the home with simple contemporary lines that created a calm workspace. They needed a kitchen that would work for more than one person at a time and required more space, drawers, storage and better functionality.

To overcome this design issue, the existing walls in the kitchen were removed to create an open plan space.

A large ‘L’ shaped benchtop was selected to enable two people to work comfortably in the kitchen,

utilised to create seamless lines and to help streamline the functionality.

Light coloured cabinetry and a marble benchtop with waterfall ends and an apron back completes this light filled, elegant kitchen.

NKBA judges said “This is an awkward space, that would have been a struggle to make look good, but the designer has overcome this and achieved an impressive design and finish. Very clever work.”

Unlocking your kitchen’s potential

Kitchen design is an art and a craft, and every home is different. What really does make a point of difference is a qualified kitchen designer.

The New Zealand Diploma in Kitchen Design is aimed at designers who are seeking new opportunities to grow and excel. This two-year course, delivered by BCITO | Te Pūkenga and National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA), offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines block courses and written assignments with workplace training.

Each year of the course begins with a five-day block course held in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch. In the first year of the diploma, students work through the 21 NKBA spatial design guidelines.

Looking for an experienced Christchurch Joiner? We have 45 years experience. Godfrey Hand at Handcraft Kitchens has been in the trade since 1974. No job is too small. Contact us for a free quote.

We can assist with:

“It has helped build my knowledge and I have become more confident and better at what I do. The networking has also been fantastic and has led to new opportunities. It’s also been great to be exposed to new ideas and new ways of doing things,” David says.

The block courses are taught by experienced NKBA tutors, and dedicated BCITO | Te Pūkenga Training Advisors provide ongoing support to students, guiding them through written assignments and on-job assessments.

To complement their classroom learning, students receive a free NKBA student membership which allows them to attend NKBA conferences, local chapter meetings, and exclusive designer and student days.

From ergonomics and optimal working heights, to products and material selection, students uncover the key principles of functional kitchen design. The first-year block course also includes an educational day out of the classroom visiting kitchen showrooms and manufacturers, which provides invaluable exposure to the real-world kitchen design landscape.

Year two is an exploration of the aesthetic elements of kitchen design, including colour, design principles, and lighting schemes. Students learn how to achieve harmony through shape, space, and balance, and master the skill of combining function with form.

The diploma helps kitchen designers to hone their listening skills, which is vital when working with clients and ensuring each project meets the brief.

Cabinetmaker David Orchard says that the diploma helped to increase his confidence.

These events provide a range of networking opportunities with experienced designers and other industry experts. Other membership benefits include access to educational print resources and regular webinars on topical industry issues, providing plenty of continuing professional development opportunities. Unlock your full potential and take your skills to the next level with the New Zealand Diploma in Kitchen Design.

Building Code changes for plumbing, drainage and fire protection

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is amending acceptable solutions and verification methods to ensure the safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders when it comes to plumbing, drainage, and protection from fire.

MBIE manager of Building Performance and Engineering, Dr. Dave Gittings, says the changes are updates of existing documents used to comply with the Building Code.

“They aim to improve the quality and reliability of plumbing and drainage services and to protect people from fire in their homes.

“The changes to the plumbing documents include the adoption of the latest version of the AS/NZS 3500 plumbing and drainage standards. These new versions include New Zealand specific requirements that replace several previous modifications to the standards.

“Children and the elderly are especially at risk for tap water

Our aim is to provide certainty and direction to the sector, to give manufacturers, suppliers and installers time to comply with the new requirements, and to prepare information and education to support the sector and public with the changes.

scalds, 65 percent of severe tap water scalds have been found to occur in infants and young children under four years old. The changes to water supplies aim to increase protection of those who are most vulnerable to hot water scalding from taps and baths and better protect drinking water from backflow contamination.

“We are proceeding with changes to cite the latest industry standards for fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and smoke control systems including the requirement for interconnected smoke alarms as the minimum fire safety system in new homes. By adopting the latest industry standards and aligning with similar requirements in other countries, we aim to improve the safety of our communities.

“In response to mixed feedback received in the submissions, we are withdrawing portions of the fire proposal regarding

protection of other property from fire spread in townhouses and low-rise multi-unit dwellings. Submissions generally supported the intent to increase the level of life safety from fire in our homes but there was no clear consensus on what the technical details of the change should be.

“Our aim is to provide certainty and direction to the sector, to give manufacturers, suppliers and installers time to comply with the new requirements, and to prepare information and education to support the sector and public with the changes.”

The revised acceptable solutions and verification methods documents will be published in November 2023 to allow a 12-month transition period. At the end of this transition period, the previous versions of the documents can no longer be used.

High standard roofing

Canterbury Roof Painting services all of Christchurch and most of Canterbury and will provide you a complete professional service – from the initial inspection right through to the final clean up.

Many home owners take their roof for granted, and probably do not give much thought to the condition their roof is in. If the protective coating on your roof is worn, faded, delaminating (peeling) - you need to take immediate action to stop the elements causing serious and potentially costly damage. A roof repaint is typically a quarter (or less) of re-roofing prices.

If you are selling your property, the aesthetics of a newly painted roof can also be very appealing, particularly if you have a faded Colorsteel roof that is very visible from the ground.

After a site inspection, you will receive an honest and detailed report outlining any defects, damage, potential risks and a course of action required to rectify any issues.

We will provide a free noobligation quote outlining the on-site inspection and any costs relating to rectifying any issues.

Once your project is complete, your property will be cleaned and you will be asked if you are completely satisfied with your experience and the job completion. We do strive to complete our roofs to an extremely high standard, both in our workmanship and our onsite etiquette.

Canterbury Roof Painting only uses leading paint brands such as Wattyl, Resene, and Dulux. These companies all carry 12–15-year product warranties with paints designed specifically for New Zealand’s fluctuating climate.

Standard kerbside recycling part of new era for waste system

Recycling of household, construction and commercial waste is a hot topic due to how vital it is for the nation’s future.

With this in mind, the government recently announced changes to the way we make, use, recycle and dispose of waste, ushering in a new era for New Zealand’s waste system labelled ‘Getting Rid of Waste for a Circular Aotearoa New Zealand’.

The changes will ensure that where waste is recycled, for instance by households at the kerbside, it is less likely to be contaminated by material that cannot be used.

The initiatives are:

• Improved and standardised household kerbside recycling

• Organic collections (including food scraps), making it easier for people to recycle and avoid sending as much to landfills

• A new waste strategy to set New Zealand’s direction on waste for the next three decades

• New and more comprehensive waste legislation.

“New Zealand is one of the highest generators of waste per person in the world, every year producing about 750kg per person. At home, we only recycle and compost about one-third of household waste,” Environment Minister David Parker said.

“The way we create and manage waste is way behind many other developed countries, but with these improvements, we’re

putting the right foundations in place to bring our waste and recycling systems up to global standards.”

Households in urban areas will have a standardised recycling service by 2027 and a household food scraps collection by 2030. A standardised service will make it clear what can or can’t be recycled from home, so New Zealanders can be confident they are doing the right thing.

Standardised recycling collections will ensure collection of glass bottles and jars; paper and cardboard; plastic bottles and containers from plastic types 1, 2, and 5; and aluminium and steel tins and cans.

Kerbside food scrap collections will be a new service for many

households. Ensuring food scraps are separate from landfill collection and can be disposed of responsibly will reduce emissions and make it easier to find new uses for that waste.

Working with local authorities, the changes to household collections will be phased in from 2024 to 2030 as supporting infrastructure is expanded.

Ideas for urban growth

The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has ninvited the community to suggest sites or areas that could be considered suitable for residential and business urban development across the district.

The initiative is part of the Spatial Plan 2024 Gen 2.0, which builds on the Queenstown Lakes Spatial Plan adopted in 2021.

This part of the spatial plan, still in the early stages of development, sees the council required ideas and suggestions of different sites from the public.

To be considered, sites would need to be suitable for urban development for housing.

QLDC strategic growth manager, Anita Vanstone, says “As part of this, people can also suggest special environmental features or areas that warrant greater protection or enhancement, such as a stream or areas with native vegetation, or to suggest areas they consider inappropriate for urban development due to things like natural hazard or infrastructure constraints, or noise and odour from neighbouring activities”.

The public call for sites closed on the 16th of July 2023 however, there will be many opportunities for the public to propose their ideas.

The reasoning for a new spatial plan is because when the council adopted its first spatial plan it was intended that this would be

its Future Development Strategy as per the requirements of the 2016 National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity (NPS-UDC). Since then the NPSUDC has been replaced by a 2020 policy, which means the Future Development Strategy needs to be a joint responsibility of the QLDC and ORC.

According to Anita, the district is now home to more than 48,000 residents and is expected to grow to over 82,000 in the next 30 years.

“Our district continues to be a highly desirable place to live, visit and invest in and that’s down to the love for this place, its diverse communities, landscapes, lifestyle, economic opportunities, and national and international connectivity.

“But with that desirability comes increased demand for houses, businesses and supporting infrastructure and a need to ensure we ‘grow well’. That involves creating urban and green spaces that don’t just meet our needs but are places we’re all proud of,” she says.

The Gen 2.0 plan will take at least 12 months to complete and will become a part of the Future Development Strategy, a government requirement for all high-growth councils in New Zealand.
