The making of a manager Management has always required people with high levels of competence and performance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the role, and secondly, to lead others.

At the end of the day the senior management leadership challenge is to add value and this can be achieved by building the confidence of those we lead.

It is critically important that we direct, lead and inspire the next generation of managers, so as to ensure they have the skills to carry the flag in the future. The best new managers are continually being trained by their senior managers and peers, and are teaching themselves to become better at their roles through learning and growth.

Many young managers today will readily understand and comprehend the 'what' and 'why' of management however, may struggle with having the confidence to put this knowledge in to practice.

This is a dilemma that many companies' senior management teams face and the following suggestions may assist. It is only experience that can bring these new manager's skills to life and be meaningful.

Here are some tips to assist you with your next managers:

Another 90-day trial clause bites the dust If you ever needed proof the courts are strict with 90-day trial periods, then look no further than the Employment Court case of Farmer Motor Group Limited v McKenzie, just recently published.

After McKenzie arrived late for work his supervisor told him his employment was immediately terminated under his trial period, and he would be paid out four weeks, in lieu of him working out his notice period.

Sounds reasonable right. Well you are wrong.

Despite the company having a valid 90-day trial period clause, the employment agreement also stipulated that termination required not less than four weeks’ notice in writing.

The ERA decided that because the notice had not been given in writing, the dismissal pursuant to the trial period provisions was not valid. This meant that McKenzie could have his personal grievance heard.

The company challenged this before the Employment Court.

The company argued amongst other things that payment in lieu of notice period meant exactly that. The arguments were rejected by the Employment Court.

Mind before matters Okay so let’s really talk about the elephant in the room. Running a business and keeping your mental health stable.

Is an accountant really qualified to help keep your mental state appropriate? Hmmm… maybe not. But… typically your advisor is aware of the business factors. By nature there comes an awareness of the mental issues that might come with dealing with IRD (especially if in arrears etc.).

Business is not always plain sailing, we entail unexpected head winds, cut-offs and accidents.

It’s about being aware of the environment and responding appropriately to it.

The secret is being aware that things won’t (always) go to plan, and then having a course of action when this happens.

Maintaining one’s mental health and stability falls somewhat outside of what we are taught as we come through university and qualify as accountants and advisors.

But it is a very real aspect to life in the business world.

That said, an awareness and open line of communication is essential. Your advisors are there to keep you on the straight and narrow in respect of business.

That is how to get more clients of the type you want, how to get them back more often, how to increase prices or margins and how to be more effective in business processes.

Firsly, set meaningful objectives and goals. Goals should be S.M.A.R.T, (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely). Goals will clarify the direction and what is expected to be accomplished. Goals should be linked to your strategic plan.

The Court decided that payment in lieu of notice is not a substitute for the obligation to give written notice, nor is payment in lieu an alternative to providing notice.

Practice modelling. Model the behaviours required by setting an example with your own behaviours. There is a theory called operant conditioning and this relates to a concept of consequence. The probability that a person performs in a certain way is a function of previous consequences.

Firstly: make sure you always issue termination of employment under any 90-day trial clause in writing.

That is (relatively speaking) the easy part. The more difficult part is how to achieve that whilst keeping and maintaining a significant other relationship, raising children, and staying involved in your spiritual or social events.

Secondly: if you are going to pay notice instead of requiring the employee to work out their notice period, include that in the letter of termination.

Make sure your advisor has a holistic bent. They won’t necessarily have all the answers, but they need an awareness.

Thirdly: to minimise the financial implications of still getting it wrong, make sure you specify in your 90-day trial clause that if an employment is terminated pursuant to a 90-day trial period, then the notice period will be shorter than written elsewhere in the agreement. Try 24 hours only.

Through this awareness they should have contacts to help you and to work with you to achieve ultimate work/life balance.

Finally: we know the unions and the Labour party hate trial periods. It will be interesting to see whether this ideological dislike will translate itself into policy. We may also see some changes to other aspects of employment law with the intent of strengthening the power of unions.

The most important thing is to have someone to share your thoughts with. Maybe that’s a significant other, a colleague, a coach, an advisor.

From this we can see that responses following desired behaviours will occur more and responses followed by undesirable consequence will be less.

Be an encourager and motivator. Positively reinforce good behaviours. Examples of positive reinforcement are praise and recognition. By contrast, negative reinforcement is often seen as punishment.

Management is not an easy task and it is expected that those in management positions can deliver on a number of skills or competencies. These include; organising, time management, problem solving, decision making, mentoring and motivation, goal setting, effective listening, conflict management, selfcontrol and communication.

Companies that invest in their management training will undoubtedly reap the rewards in improved productivity, profitability, efficiency and overall satisfaction (customer, company and individual) levels.

There are some important lessons here.

So, as you go into your well-earned Christmas break, perhaps it’s a good idea to not only diarise a review of your employment agreement in the new year, but also make a point of keeping an eye out for any proposed labour law changes and how they might affect your business.

There is no point having the best and most beautiful business if your personal life is in tatters (yes a personal opinion).

Just make sure you are heard and listened to. It is important. For you, for your family, for your business.

Small businesses set for payroll changes

Social enterprise - it’s good for business

In just a few months, New Zealand businesses are going to experience some major changes to the way they look after paying their staff.

You may be aware that Christchurch recently hosted the Social Enterprise World Forum 2017.

Inland Revenue’s systems and processes are being modernised so that businesses can manage payroll in the digital age. Tax reporting and compliance will soon become much easier for businesses, but that doesn’t mean it’ll happen without payroll administrators subscribing to a new way of doing things.

Whether you’re the one in charge of a business, or you’re an advisor helping with the accounting side of things, chances are you’ve been frustrated with PAYE in the past. Every organisation’s payroll needs to not only be accurate and flexible, but also account for annual leave, seasonal work, contractors, variable rates, and more.

Running a business in the cloud is becoming the norm; especially when it comes to managing finances and accounts.

Inland Revenue is changing with the times to suit the new reality of integrated payroll systems.

These software and accounting programmes mean information is now flowing seamlessly between the business, the bank, the accounting system and the employee, enabling small business and their advisors the possibility of reconciling in real-time. And, specifically when it comes to Inland Revenue, online reporting and filing.

Now is the time for enterprises to plan for the change to the payroll status quo that’s coming their way on April 1, 2018.

First thing's first: finish all your pay runs for the financial year.

Get things squared up and in check, so that you’re not fussing with old accounts that need reconciling as you and your advisor navigate the 2018 changes.

The most significant change to be aware of is the removal of the payroll subsidy. Currently the business cost of a PAYE intermediary is partly or fully subsidised for small businesses.

This is a throw-back to the first few years of online tax filing, where PAYE information was assured by using a listed payroll intermediary. Removing the subsidy confirms there is no longer a case to subsidise one type of payroll service over others.

If you are one of those receiving that subsidy, do your homework and plan ahead for your next financial year so you’re not caught short.

Start researching online tools that can help you get the most out of your current accounting software. All of the best apps and online services integrate with software that is easily connected to cloud-based accounting options like Xero.

Once you’re connected to the cloud, there are a whole bunch of options that become open to you now that your accounts are no longer tied to a desktop. Whatever you choose to implement in the next financial year, plan for the transition now so there are no PAYE hiccups.

Build credibility - it matters If we have learnt anything from the recent general election, it is that credibility and experience matter.

A hugely successful event held across five different venues, it attracted over 1,600 participants – 47 percent of whom were from overseas.

Even when you think you are doing and saying the right things, you will be challenged at the first hurdle to prove that you are credible.

Congratulations are owed to Akina Foundation, who organised and ran the forum. At WorkSpace IQ we appreciate the positive impact on workplace wellbeing that social enterprise and social responsibility has, and actively encourage organisations to get staff involved in some kind of voluntary work as part of their workplace wellness maintenance programme, so I was of course interested in finding out more.

A similar ‘credibility dilemma’ is faced by many young people as they enter the workforce.

Social enterprise in action Social enterprise is all about working with people and the community, with organisations having a focus on the benefits to people and the environment rather than just the end financial result.

It has been evolving as a recognised business model in New Zealand over the last 40 years, starting with businesses such as Trade Aid, which supports struggling farmers and artisans in developing countries around the world to gain access to our markets.

The Social Enterprise World Forum also gave participants the opportunity to network with others, share ideas, hear about successes in the social enterprise field in New Zealand and around the world, and be inspired.

What can you do to make a difference?

So what does this mean for your organisation? Would social enterprise even fit your business model and how can you get involved?

Well, there are many things you can do to start thinking with a ‘social enterprise’ hat on and you can start small. For example, you could: • Offer work opportunities to someone who has difficulty maintaining full time work due to health issues, or health of a family member. Being flexible in work options and place of work, can make a huge difference • Offer flexible hours • Make sure that you and your organisation help out in a voluntary capacity to support other businesses and people • Encourage people to bike to work by providing bike racks and if practical, provide showers and changing rooms • Implement a corporate responsibility charter for your organisation.

As you can see, steps towards social responsibility and social enterprise need not be huge. Every little change makes a difference and starts to have a bigger impact on our environment.

To be successful, we are asking our young people to prove themselves: to be seen as credible by behaving as if they have experience, long before they have had the opportunity to build expertise in their field.

We often ask our experienced leaders to prove their credibility and ‘hit the ground running’, but should we be asking the same of our fledglings?

Taking the recent election as an example (and without making a judgment on any political party), we have seen a ‘fledgling’ asked to prove their credibility far beyond other party leaders, simply because of years in the job. (Maybe in politics there are no other measures?)

If, as experienced current leaders, it is our job to encourage and lead the next generation, and if we ever wish to retire, we must inevitably hand over the reins to others who have yet to prove themselves.

Given our present showing in this area, we may have to demonstrate greater commitment, and even include youth succession in our plans for diversity, along with other goals such as ethnicity.

There is a great initiative from a Strategic Insights Panel, sponsored by ASB and KPMG, which identified our shortage of skilled workers and a rapidly changing employment environment, and is prompting New Zealand businesses to take action and declare that they are willing to recruit people with no formal qualifications.

To date, more than 100 companies have stepped up and signed an open letter saying that tertiary qualifications are not required for a range of skilled roles in their workplaces.

They are focusing on assessing the skills, attitudes, motivation and adaptability of candidates.

Proving you are credible and have a work ethic that responds to the demands of a pressured environment may get our youth leaders in roles that would not have been an option in recent years.

Being involved in the community, playing sport or joining the drama club could be a pathway to demonstrating your capability when it comes to sticking at a task and supporting others in your team, so when a future employer asks about your credibility, you have the means to prove it.

The four keys to great delegation

If reputation is everything in business, what’s your everything?

Even in small businesses, great delegation is a vital skill for any business person who wants to expand or increase turnover.

However, the problem is, very few have formal training in it.

The best way to answer this is to think about what would happen if you did irreparable damage to your reputation through your actions or poor public relations.

At recent presentations, I have been asking people to consider the damage that can be caused through mismanaging a reaction to theft or fraud within an organisation.

Not being upfront about what has happened, not apologising to people who have been harmed, and not reassuring people that preventative measures have been put in place, can cause serious reputational damage and fallout for the business.

One of the hardest things to learn when you first become responsible for other staff, is to get out of the way and let your staff get on with the job. Good delegators give their subordinates as much responsibility and authority as they are able to accept but at the same time maintain control.

Paradoxically, they increase their own power by sharing it with others.

The consequences might include less trust and confidence from current customers, fewer referrals, staff resignations, less revenue, less public support in a future crisis… and even a catastrophic impact on your personal life.

Protecting and enhancing your reputation really is a serious business. It should be considered in everything you do in your company, from how you treat your customers to your HR policies and health and safety procedures.

As well as being good for business today, it will help protect you from any major challenges to your reputation in the future.

To shore up your organisation for potential reputational crises, it is a good idea to look at where your greatest risks lie and doing as much as you can to mitigate them.

While issues such as insecure data and poor engagement with customers are relatively universal problems, other risks are more industry specific.

For example, maintaining a strong reputation for health and safety will require much more work in a warehouse than it will in an accountancy firm.

A common mistake in delegation is passing work on too quickly and not setting enough relevant inspection points.

Many would-be delegators don’t realise it’s a four-stage process, not a single action. If you don’t work through each phase with your delegatee, at some point you’ll almost certainly have to backtrack.

The four stages of delegation: 1. Directive delegation Initially a new person needs clear instructions and lots of guidance, not the opportunity to use their initiative. They don’t know enough to need much support, so they won’t yet make many decisions.

Your behaviour therefore needs to be highly directive, rather than supportive. In fact, the level of support is quite low. There will also probably be quite a bit of positive correction and adjustment, depending on the complexity of the task.

2. Coaching-style delegation They start to understand the process. You encourage them to come with questions; you give plenty of explanations, continue to instruct, have lots of reviews, and also support them in learning and applying new skills and knowledge. You’ll be providing high levels of both direction and support.

Having a pre-prepared crisis communications plan will go a long way to helping you preserve your reputation when the chips are down.

While you won’t be able to plan for every eventuality, you’ll have the bones of a strategy to help you respond swiftly and effectively when the time comes.

Key elements of this plan should include an easily accessible, up-to-date contact list for all staff, support services and clients, a hierarchy for contacting people during specific crises, and identified media spokespeople.

A public relations company with expertise in crisis communications will be able to assist you to prepare your plan and be there to support you if it is ever needed.

3. Supportive delegation These folk now have a good grip on the process. You’re weaning both yourself and them off lots of ‘telling’ – direction is low. Instead, you mainly give them high support in making their decisions. Your role is to help where needed, review their actions and oversee results as they increase their level of responsibility.

4. High-level delegation Now you’re free! Your delegatee not only has an excellent understanding of the task, but they have the confidence to get on with the job. They can still come for help if they need it, but that’s a rare occurrence. You can now give only low support and low direction, and only need to review their work occasionally.

Six steps to flexibility

Our lives are becoming increasingly hectic. It’s been proven time and again when personal life is well looked after then productivity in the workplace goes up.

Understanding your employee’s individual needs and catering for them can often mean adding a level of flexibility to the workplace.

Every workplace is different and there will always be different strokes for different folks, but if heightened flexibility has been on your mind, here are a few tips that may help you get started.

1. Launch a test pilot Practice makes perfect. If you feel you are missing a level of flexibility in your workplace, but you don’t know how to approach it, look at how other people in your situation are handling it and give it a trial run. You will quickly find out what is working and what is not and can tweak it accordingly.

2. Accountability Set the tasks at hand with a deadline. This holds everyone accountable and ensures the work needing to be done is still getting done, but allows for a work/life balance. You gain trust in yourself when you feel trusted by employers.

4. Know your hurdles There is always going to be hurdles to overcome, unfortunately that’s life. The best way to overcome hurdles, and avoid mountains, is to prepare yourself for them. There’s no point burying your head in the sand and expecting smooth sailing ahead, but by following steps five and six any hurdle will stay just that, a small hurdle.

5. Keep open communication “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to listen to your staff,” Sir Richard Branson told Mediaplanet. Be honest with each other and talk to your staff openly about what they are enjoying about the increased flexibility and their advice on any changes that need to be made. And more often than not that ‘creativity’ is what is needed to find the solution to issues faced.

One advantage that an entrepreneur may have over a corporate executive, Lesley has found, is that entrepreneurs have often built businesses based on their hobbies and natural strengths. This can make their workplace more "playful" but they can still be prone to stress.

This makes weekend wonders much more important for those in the corporate world.

It’s not a matter of climbing a mountain every weekend or following the teachings of Buddha, though go ahead if that tickles your fancy, it’s all about finding what works best for you and actually putting it into practice.

Reconnect, exercise, take up knitting, whatever it may be just don’t let your weekend become a mere extension of your working week. Take time out to enjoy yourself, to reflect and prepare - your following week will thank you for it.

Balancing acts How to run a business and manage a family Juggling running a business and a family can put parents under a lot of pressure, especially during the school holidays, but there are ways to make life easier.

While the kids enjoy a well-deserved break, many parents find it difficult to timetable children into busy work schedules – and this is particularly true for parents who operate their own small to medium sized businesses.

She says “parentpreneurs” or business owners with children, tend to have a different opinion of what success looks like. “Business operators who are parents not only strive for the financial freedom that comes with a good income, but they want the ability and flexibility to spend time with their families.”

Nets for your safety Once your workers are at height, have you considered what would happen if one of them were to fall? The tool to address this risk may be safety nets.

Safety nets are designed to stretch and absorb the energy of a fall, so a falling person is less likely to be injured. The greater the fall height, the greater the impact; so the net’s deflection must also be greater. The safety net must be able to deform or deflect enough to absorb all of the energy when someone falls – up to the maximum fall height for the design.

However, for nets to protect workers from falls, they must be set up correctly. WorkSafe inspectors have witnessed several cases where the net setup was well below what is required, thereby offering no protection to the risk of falling. The design and setup of safety nets is crucial to their ability to function, especially if they are coupled together to span large rooms.

To help raise standards, WorkSafe recently released an alert to industry that highlighted some of the poor practices related to safety nets.

This alert is available in the news section of WorkSafe’s website.

When it comes to suppliers, you must ensure that any nets and associated fitting equipment that you supply meets the appropriate standards for New Zealand.

When nets are installed onsite it should be done following the manufacturer’s guidance and industry best practice. We suggest that you ensure the correct use of anchorages, ties and foundations so that the nets will not fail if someone needs fall protection.

In addition, safety nets are not a place to store your site rubbish, or for bouncing or standing on.

Unfortunately, we have seen instances of nets being used for these purposes.

While it may be tempting to unscrew the nets if you need to get things up through them, this can lead to net failure. We have seen several instances where tek screws have failed because they have been reused. Safety nets should always be reinstated by a competent person after an alteration or fall.

Working at height carries inherent risks which must be managed. Safety nets are just one solution to help minimise the impact of a fall, don’t be afraid to look at other options if they suit your requirements and site better. Innovative solutions are popping up to help manage these risks, but always ensure that they are fit to manage the risk of any fall on site.

Five ways to improve employee morale Motivation cannot be imposed from outside, like a rule! It comes from inside and, as such, to raise motivation levels among employees, the workplace needs to offer something that connects to the personal needs of individuals.

This simple reality is surprisingly poorly understood by many organisations, which often tackle the problem of poor engagement and motivation levels by looking in the wrong places.

Some people of course work best on their own (and there are always suitable roles for these people), but nobody becomes completely asocial as soon as they step into the workplace.

They don’t cease to have social needs.

Foods containing phytochemicals that are said to improve memory include berries, avocado, fish, dark chocolate and eggs.

3. Exercise A study published in PubMed – the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) – has shown that in both rat and human brains, regular exercise can improve memory recall.

In particular, regular exercise can improve cognitive abilities and spatial memory.

4. Sleep Memory consolidation is a distinct process that occurs during sleep to maintain, strengthen and modify memories stored in the long-term memory.

In one study, participants were separated into two groups and asked to memorise illustrated cards to test their memory strength. After memorising a set, both groups took a 40-minute break wherein one group napped, and the other stayed awake.

After the break, both groups were tested on their memory of the cards – the group who had napped performed significantly better, retaining on average 85 percent of the patterns, compared to 60 percent for those who had remained awake.

It’s not necessarily your fault that you forget what you’re doing when you enter/exit a room… it’s science.

According to Scientific American, the “doorway effect” exists genetically in every single one of us.

A team of researchers from the University of Notre Dame – Gabriel Radvansky, Sabine Krawietz and Andrea Tamplin – established that “memory was worse after passing through a doorway than after walking the same distance within a single room.”

Called the encoding specificity principle, psychologists have known for a while that memory works best when the context during testing matches the context during learning.

But some forms of memory seem to augment to keep information at the ready until its ‘shelf life’ expires, and then purge that information in favour of new information.

Radvansky et al call this sort of memory representation an “event model” – walking through a doorway is a good time to purge your event models because whatever happened in the old room is likely to become less relevant now that you have changed venues.

Just when you thought he’d reached the pinnacle, Derek Handley pulls another rabbit out of his hat.

I would list all that he has accomplished since he began his entrepreneurial journey, but my word count won’t allow it.

However, I won’t demean its relevance, all is well worth the mention.

In more recent times, you may recognise Derek from his appearance with John Campbell and Nigel Latta on their television show What’s Next, what you may not recognise Derek for, is all the work he does behind the scenes.

Currently Derek is an adjunct professor at AUT, a director of Sky Television, a chief innovation officer for Human Ventures, founder of the Aera Foundation and an astronaut in waiting with Virgin Galactic. He was also part of Air New Zealand’s sustainability advisory panel up until October.

Always looking towards the future, he knows where business is heading and the impact it can have. Everything he does now is in support of this movement.

Your home is where your heart is Though based in New York, Derek has deep connections with New Zealand, and has not spent more than three months away from what he still considers as home.

Derek is a firm believer that everyone on this planet has an ultimate purpose, New Zealand is the keeper of Derek’s.

“At the end of the day people need to realise what it is that pulls at their soul or their heart and for me, wherever I am in the world, that is New Zealand,” he says, the nostalgia shining through as he speaks.

“It’s woven into my existence. There has never been a period that I haven’t been attached to some project, some initiative, some problem.

“Going all the way back; I’ve been on the board of the Arts Foundation, I’m on the board for Sky TV, I was on the board of sustainability for Air NZ, I’m an adjunct professor at AUT, an investor in things like Eat my Lunch, and other startups in the community. I’ve set up a small charitable trust in NZ, I feel like I’m there every day in spirit.”

We all experience growth and change as we age, what resonated with our younger selves may no longer seem important as we progress. Rather than resting on his laurels, Derek continues to adapt to that change and frequently questions his purpose and fully trusts his intuition.

His sights are now firmly set on helping others on their journey and tackling as many societal and environmental issues as humanly possible, and he does so through a number a means.

Not just business for business sake “It’s not who has made a billion dollars, it’s who has effected a billion lives.”

When you read the headline, ‘Derek Handley Invests alongside Mark Zuckerberg’, admittedly it grabs you and represents the scale of the startups that Derek is empowering. However, it’s the investment in particular which stuck out for me, I believe it perfectly sums up Derek’s direction and purpose – I’ll explain.

Through venture capital network Aera VC, in which Derek is a founding partner, they invested in the African tech company Andela, and as the headline conveys they did so alongside Mark Zuckerberg the Facebook mogul.

“I think we are at the cusp of a transformation in terms of the representation of young people in leadership roles in society, in the Government and with social issues. And I think I would like to catalyse that and make it move a bit faster.”

“I’m really interested in seeing what could be built, that may recruit far greater numbers of young people, to find places where they can serve. Whether it’s with a non-profit, on a social issue or joining their local council.

“The Andela model is to find the brightest talent no matter where it is in Africa and help them become top coders and software engineers.”

“Can we get new voices, younger voices, to really stand up and have them stepping forward to play a far greater role? That’s what is really inspiring me through the Fellowship.”

It’s giving people opportunity where they would never have had it before and sets them up for what the future holds - everything that Derek stands for.

You’d think with his fingers in so many pies, as the saying goes, that Derek had reached his limit, but it seems there is more than one rabbit tucked away in his hat.

Whether it be through Human Ventures, the Aera Foundation, through countless interviews and public talks, Derek is continuously using his experiences to progress the success of others and to better the world we live in.

“The most important thing for me is I create a lot of space. The opposite of what you’d expect… but the more space I create the more effective I am everywhere. I’m always trying to create new forms of content and new forms of advocacy and awareness- building on issues.”

In an article Derek wrote for the NZ Herald, he explains how the Andela model is relevant globally and suggests there is much talent going to waste.

“How much talent is there hidden in our low decile schools, in the regions or spread across the many islands of our Pacific neighbours that we have yet to discover and unleash, because they don’t ‘stand out’ in the school system, or aren’t provided with the conditions to?”

Upon mentioning hidden talents and his involvement in the Aera Fellowship, a program which enables young New Zealanders to be “immersed into the heart of real-world projects”, there was a definitive switch in the tone of Derek’s voice and I can’t help but sense something exciting on the horizon.

And if he’s not tackling the issues he’s investing in those that are.

“There are so many areas that we can be innovating in and trying to address in a way that is crossing the boundaries of what you expect from the Government, what you expect from the non-profit sector and what you expect from the business sector.

“It’s really exciting the road that’s being paved with social enterprises. There is lots of room to grow.”

And where there is room to grow you can guarantee Derek has a mind brimming with ideas. I feel as though we are still yet to see Derek’s ultimate contribution.

Derek is considered successful with his past endeavors in the old paradigm of success, but he says there’s a new paradigm and if anything good was to come of the recession it would be Derek’s realisation of this.

THE BRUTAL TRUTH The business of water: A conversation about conservation

Name one thing you enjoy doing and I can guarantee it requires water. No matter your occupation, vocation, lifestyle necessities; everything depends on a clean supply of quality H2O and such a supply, contrary to popular belief, is not everlasting.

It falls from the sky. It collects in pockets underground. Its runs off mountainsides into streams, rivers and lakes. But treating New Zealand’s fresh water as an abundant and endless resource is seeing it become abundantly damaged, and you don’t have to be a greenie to know that a sanitary supply of water is what keeps the country and within that, communities, alive.

Water warrior and Councillor Lan Pham knows what impact letting our freshwater resources degrade further is having on our economies, and on the health of our people.

She gets paid to protect our livelihood, the environment, and she paints a pretty bleak picture for future generations if we don’t get our act together.

To describe Lan Pham as Wonder Woman 2.0 is not even a stretch. Her resume reads something like this: Freshwater ecologist, youngest Environment Canterbury Councillor, director of not-for-profit Working Waters Trust, formidable campaigner for the protection

and preservation of the environment; and she’s only just getting started.

The Botanical Gardens seemed as fitting setting as any for our interview. Christchurch agreed, turning on a balmy spring day that acted as greater fortification as any to our conversation on conservation and its relationship with the economy.

Despite being a native Wellingtonian, 31year old Lan Pham, (pronounced ‘Larn’ – it doesn’t rhyme with her surname though I’m sure she won’t mind if you remember it as though it does, if that will keep environmental conservation at the forefront of your mind), is probably more familiar with Canterbury’s freshwater resources than you and I. She (not so) secretly admits to identifying more with Te Waipounamu (the South Island) than Te Ika-a-Maui (the North Island).

Lan completed a Bachelor of Science in Ecology through Massey University in Palmerston North before beginning her career with the Department of Conservation.

Wanting to sink her teeth in further, beginning with a crusade to expand her practical experience, she moved south to Dunedin and completed her Masters in freshwater ecology.

It was through this she learned just how much of a biodiversity hotspot Otago, Canterbury and down towards Southland is for native fish.

In 2013, as a 27yo, post masters, Lan started the Working Waters Trust, which works alongside private land owners in “not only enhancing but celebrating our country’s unique and fascinating freshwater critters and ecosystems”.

WWT has funding from the Department of Conservation, Rata Foundation, Environment Canterbury, WWF New Zealand, Tindall Foundation and others to work on Galaxiid projects throughout Canterbury (Oxford, Tuhaitara Coastal Reserve, St Andrews), Otago (Poolburn, Waihola, Kakanui, Lawrence) and Southland (Pomahaka catchment).

Lan is also involved in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy; a move which was followed by her literal relocation north to Christchurch to handle an increasing number of projects throughout Canterbury.

Canterbury is split into 10 water management zones, each of whom have their own Zone committee who work together with their local committees, and Lan sits on the Orari-TemukaOpihi-Pareora zone committee.

Around the world we’re hitting environmental limits. We thought the environment was boundless but now we have reached environmental limits and we need to face up to that and change our practices accordingly.

“One of our main challenges is understanding the magnitude of change that’s required.”

Right now it’s essentially up to communities to decide how polluted any waterway is permitted to be when they set limits as part of the sub regional process in Canterbury – within the bottom lines that National has set in the National Policy Statement for Freshwater.

However, the bottom lines in the NPS are set for things like nitrogen toxicity, which is 6.9mg of nitrogen per litre of water, and what that means is that at that point, 20 percent of the life in that stream or river has died.

“6.9mg doesn’t sound like much but when you talk about ecosystem health, it’s at the point of 0.4mg that ecosystems start growing excess algae, which can result in dissolved oxygen fluctuations and increase the temperature of the water, which spells disaster for our native aquatic critters,” Lan says.

Again a thirst for varied, practical experience beckoned and Lan escaped to Raoul Island in the Kermadecs, working for DOC but running science and biodiversity projects for organisations like GNS science, NIWA water testing, and the Scripps Research Institute, a global atmospheric science institute based in California.

Try not to get too jealous, but one of her jobs included going out on the bluff and counting hump back whales for hours, “which was beautiful but actually not very rewarding”.

She realised her boat would return to NZ the week before the regional council elections, so she decided to run and virtually ran her campaign from the Kermadecs with the help of a team on the ground in CHCH. Not long after touching down in CHCH, Lan was elected to ECan as its youngest and arguably most passionate councillor.

Fresh water, climate change and the economy The main issues currently affecting our waterways are climate change and, not a lack of awareness, but a lack of understanding of the magnitude of change that is required to achieve environmental improvements.

“As fundamental as biodiversity is to life existence, I’m way more concerned about the fundamentals of ‘Are we going to have safe, clean drinking water in 10, 20 years’ time, are we going to have options for growing our crops when we can no longer rely on synthetic fertilisers produced by fossil fuels?’” Lan says.

“The New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme has been proven internationally to be completely shonky – truly – based on phony Ukrainian carbon credits that have not been proven to have environmental outcomes,” Lan says.

“That’s what our previous Government has been buying and using in our Kyoto Protocol commitments to say that we’re meeting our emissions targets.

“It’s nonsensical. We have failed to recognise that if any economic activity is environmentally unsustainable, it’s already economically unsustainable, and we’re not creating our economies in ways that actually have a longer term vision.

It’s a fallacy that we should make changes solely for the environment: “We should change because it makes good business sense – because it appeals to our customers. That is what true economic sustainability will look like because internationally, our customers want our clean, green products, they want safe food, it’s nothing radical it’s actually the fundamentals of providing for a stable, thriving economy.”

She says the best way people can make an impact – “and gosh they can make an impact”– is to engage with ECan’s long term plan and submit on the long term plan, which comes out for consultation in February 2018, because that sets out everything Environment Canterbury will be working on, and how much money is budgeted and rated for different sections of ECan’s responsibilities.

“In particular, I really want to see us implement a climate change programme of work and focus on achieving a step-change in biodiversity.”

Lan says the Greens were the only party that actually talked about an agricultural transition fund.

“They were the only ones who said, ‘Actually, our agricultural sector is so valuable we need to help them, we need to invest in them so that they can transition, rather than solely hit them with regulations.”

Right now, (speaking before the election results), under the Resource Management Act, regional councils, although charged with managing the region’s recourses, are not actually allowed to mitigate against climate change.

In other words, they can only adapt.

“We can wait for the seas to rise but we’re not actually allowed to reduce our emissions to stop that from happening in the first place.”

They’re allowed to in terms of their own business, for example ensuring their fleet of vehicles is electric, but in terms of taking into account climate change emissions and in granting resource consent, ECan is not currently permitted to do that.

This will only change if central government allows local government to mitigate climate change.

The majority of NZ's waterways are well below that bottom line. However Canterbury is an outlier – with some of our streams and rivers having the highest concentration of nitrogen in the country. Right now 74 percent of our freshwater fish are endangered.

“The magnitude of change required is so much greater than we’re acknowledging and what concerns me about that is the associated externalities which we are not currently measuring, for example the economic costs of an activity which are borne by society, things like water treatment costs, greenhouse gas emissions, health costs if you get gastro intestinal infections, etcetera.

“If we don’t take into account those costs when we talk about our agricultural economy, we’re masking this huge inter-generational issue that we’re just kicking to touch to future generations to sort out while we think, ‘Haven’t we done well because GDP is growing!’”

“We don’t have a decade or two to sort out these issues. Let’s stop mucking around. Let’s say, ‘This is what’s sustainable, this is where our rivers and lakes need to be,' and actually move towards that because we’re making rules at the moment that are kicking the can down the road.

“Zone committees are making plans in collaboration with their communities. We’re setting limits. But again it’s the magnitude of it.

This is going to need every single person doing every single thing they can – from reducing stock, installing fencing, reducing nitrogen fertiliser use, its riparian planting, it’s everything.

As Lan so eloquently evidences, we can fill council – city council, regional council, whatever – with incredible people.

“It’s the ultimate opportunity to set the trajectory of how we protect and preserve our precious resources for future generations, and get paid to do it,” she says.

The name on everyone’s lips We can thank the Greeks and the Romans for mastering the art of cider making. And Harvest Cidery in Gisborne deserves generous credit for delicious brews that have put New Zealand on the map as a serious contender for the title of world’s best cider.

It’s an institution in the eyes of cider aficionados thanks to the honesty and integrity of the brand and a range of signature flavours that have earned their stripes on more than one occasion in the awards arena.

For almost three decades - 28 years to be precise - Harvest Cidery has worked tirelessly to build up an award-winning showcase of brands synonymous with manufacturing excellence.

The names and tastes on everyone’s lips include the iconic Scrumpy Cider, Harvest New Zealand Cider, Thomas & Rose Fine Fruit Ciders, and Bulmers Original Cider. The business also fulfils contract brewing orders.

At the helm is general manager Hamish Jackson who has lived and breathed the industry since he qualified with a degree in horticulture from Massey University.

“I actually worked overseas in the United States for many years, designing and getting brands up and running, and then scored this job six years ago as the production and general manager.

“My connection with cider started from day dot though - I was slightly underage,” he quips.

“I grew up on an orchard around the corner from a cidery and I spent a lot of time there.”

Operating in a highly competitive industry that is always thirsty for change, Jackson concedes that while the business enjoys a cult following and keeps good company, rubbing shoulders with the other major players in the market, growth has somewhat tapered off as craft producers have enjoyed a 14 percent market share increase in the last quarter.

“There are a whole lot of smaller craft producers who have emerged as people’s tastes develop and they are looking for something different.

“There has been massive growth in the last four years in the flavoured cider market as consumers are looking for something interesting.”

Notwithstanding this fact, Harvest Cidery has still remained at the forefront, excelling at putting sunshine into a bottle - and at impressive volumes too.

"We are looking at driving a significant investment into new tanks and equipment - we need to be able to produce more because the business continues to grow and we are looking at somesmall release craft ciders.”

“Although we are a small, local operation - there are just 10 of us here - we work year round with our East Coast apples to produce approximately 24,000 litres a day, all of which is consumed domestically.

“It used to be that 19,000 litres was a very big day for us, but we have worked hard on optimising our production methodology.”

In addition to its significant output with its ‘bread and butter’ labels, Jackson says Harvest Cidery will also be exploring its exporting opportunities including Australia.

“We’ve also had enquiries from China about keg cider. We are looking at driving a significant investment into new tanks and equipment - we need to be able to produce more because the business continues to grow and we are looking at some small-release craft ciders.”

“We now have a fleet of 10 trucks of various sizes on the road. Eight of these come with both front and rear mounted cranes, while the other two are tipper trucks.

“Since I took over we have also established a permanent office with two administrative staff, all increasing our ability to meet our customers’ expectations.”

Kelly explains that the smallest of their HIAB trucks can take a load of up to one tonne with a crane reach of nine metres. The largest truck in the fleet on the other hand can lift up to 11 tonnes with a reach of 20 metres.

“We have a truck for most jobs. That means there really is no object too big, too small, too awkwardly placed, or too tall for our experienced drivers/crane operators to handle or give advice on.”

Building boom to reach record heights Residential, commercial and infrastructure building activity is forecast to continue to boom for the next three years to a record $42 billion in 2020, according to the independent National Construction Pipeline Report for 2017 released in August by then Building and Construction Minister Dr Nick Smith.

“The principle answer to New Zealand’s housing challenges is to build more and this report shows we are on track with record numbers of new homes in the pipeline. The report projects 196,500 homes will be built over the next six years, the largest ever in New Zealand history, with 100,000 over the next three years,” then Minister, Dr Nick Smith, said in the release.

“I am particularly encouraged that this report shows even stronger growth than last year’s report. The peak has increased from 30,000 per year to 34,500 per year and 12,000 more homes being consented over the next three years. It shows a far wider spread of new home construction to the regions rather than Auckland and Christchurch.

“This report is welcome news for the issues of housing shortages, affordability and ownership because increased supply is the main solution.

This growing pipeline and forecast of record numbers of homes being built shows the Government’s programme of reforms of Special Housing Areas, the Crown Land Programme, KiwiSaver HomeStart, resource management changes and the Housing Infrastructure Fund is working.”

The National Construction Pipeline Report provides six-year national and regional forecasts of residential, non-residential and infrastructure

activity. The report is produced independently

by BRANZ and Pacifecon to help the industry in planning and recruitment. The comparison of actuals with previous forecasts has proved to be accurate. Total actual activity was slightly higher than forecast, residential above forecast and nonresidential and infrastructure slightly less.

“The scale of the total construction boom covering residential, non-residential and infrastructure work is now forecast to total $244b over the next six years. It grew 8 per cent to $34b in 2016 and is now forecast to grow another 23 per cent to an overall peak of $42b in 2020. This peak is $5b higher than the 2016 forecast.

“This report confirms New Zealand is experiencing its strongest ever building boom with high levels of confidence driving investment in housing, non-residential and infrastructure.

The value of these reliable construction forecast reports is that they help the construction and building products industry manage procurement, help manage investment from Government and industry into training and contribute to productivity improvements in the sector.”

Designs that make the difference Even if you don’t have the biggest budget you can still have a well-designed home with attractive, modern and personalised features.

That’s the message from TDM Homes’ managing director Trent Montgomery.

“You don’t have to be building a large home with a massive budget to incorporate a good design and some nice features,” he says.

“Even the smaller homes that we build, they’ll have a lot of personalised aspects and features.

Just because you’ve got a smaller budget, you don’t have to have a basic home the same as everyone else.”

The Hamilton-based company builds new homes and renovates existing houses throughout the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and South Auckland areas.

During the nine years it has been in business it has built a wide variety of houses. This year the houses they’ve built have ranged from a modest 94 square metre home to more substantial 475 square metre home.

Trent says no matter what size the house or the budget, most people want an individual home that suits their specific needs. To that end TDM Homes is primarily a design and build company.

“No matter what the project is, we start from scratch with the client and discuss their

specifications and design a house to suit their site, needs, taste and budget, rather than taking an existing plan which may not suit what the client ideally wants or their budget.”

He says they work closely with the client to identify exactly what they require and work towards achieving what the client believes is important, while working within the budget and the time frame.

Trent says among the many qualities that sets TDM Homes apart from other building companies is the original, fresh approach taken by its design team.

One draughtsperson, Gregory Gray, lives in San Francisco and Trent says he brings modern, international ideas to the mix, creating original designs to achieve clients’ wishes.

While some people might be surprised that the designer is based in another country, as Trent points out, with modern technology, meetings with clients and the build team can easily be conducted as if they were all in the same office.

Simply put, it is a social movement where people are choosing to downsize the space they live in. This could be for any number of reasons, but the most popular ones include environmental concerns, financial concerns and the desire for more time and freedom.

“People use them for baches, for sleep-outs, or for office space. What makes our cabins distinctive are the materials we use – colour steel and cedar – and that we put considerable thought into the design and quality of the finished product.”

Matt Day and John Scantlebury of Modern Building Solutions were convinced they could design and build a tiny house that would be of premium quality, as well as being aesthetically pleasing and environmentally-friendly with solar power and a composting toilet.

Matt also notes that the cabins are fully insulated with Eco Wool and are built in the same way as a new house.

The resulting 24 square metre house on wheels was exhibited at the Waikato Home Show in early October to an excellent response. At 7.2m long, 2.5m wide, and 4.2m high, it may seem like a small space, but with creative design and layout, the use of a high ceiling and a queen sized loft bedroom, it feels really spacious.

The tiny house is simply another step along the construction journey for Modern Building Solutions.

Established in 2015 the company has specialised in building transportable cabins with customisable designs.

“Our cabins come in a range of sizes from 10 square metres up to 30 square metres,” Matt says.

“The cabins are not kitsets. Our team of qualified tradesmen builds each one, including eaves and bi-fold doors, decks and LED lighting. They are completed ready to be moved into. All the clients need to do once the cabin is onsite is to connect the power and water.”

Potential clients can view a display model of Modern Building Solutions’ cabins at its Hamilton workshops. “But if our standard designs are not exactly what a client wants we have many options to choose from for custom-made cabins.”

Moving with the times Andrew Pepper and his team at Pepper Construction can look back on the last 81 years with pride, knowing they are among a select group of New Zealand companies having long histories.

Andrew, the grandson of Len Pepper – who founded the company in New Plymouth, in 1936 – is building on the company’s roots and history as he takes it forward.

Andrew chairs the Taranaki Construction Safety Group which advocates for better practices in construction and the company is the ‘Key Construction Partner’ for the local Chamber of Commerce.

Hassle-free approach to building and renovations Shaun and Hayden Begovich have come a long way since building huts and maimais in their teenage years.

Twenty years on they have a thriving building business employing about 16 people, and busy family lives in the Waikato. And they still both love a bit of duck shooting when there’s leisure time to be had.

With nearly three decades of building experience between them, each operate their own base, Shaun in Hamilton and Hayden in the farming centre of Matamata, and they provide each other with back-up and shared resources when they need it.

“We’re both naturals at building and we love what we do,” Shaun says. “Renovations and new builds are our specialty.”

They decided in 2005 to join forces and set up Begovich Builders. It would be more efficient to operate as one company avoiding the costly duplication of legal, accounting and insurance services. It also meant they could service a much wider area, undertake bigger projects and build a more diverse client base.

Their wives also play an important part in the company. Hayden’s wife is a health and safety specialist and has documented health and safety processes for the company. Shaun’s wife brings marketing skills to the company.

In a time of unprecedented building activity in New Zealand, one of the big challenges is securing enough of the subtrades such as painters and other tradies to complete a new home or renovation.

“It’s good to have someone to talk through different issues. We both appreciate that,” older brother Shaun says.

Their core business is new residential building and renovation projects and there’s more than enough flowing in.

“That’s why we focus on building strong relationships with good quality and trusted tradesman in our area,” Shaun says.

Shaun and Hayden are proud of the company’s commitment to taking on several apprentices. They are the future workforce in the building and construction industry where forecasts point to a great deal of building work in the next 20 years.

“I’ve been fortunate, we’ve got a good team of young builders coming through,” Shaun says.

“At any one time Hayden and I can have between us six to eight apprentices, all at different levels.”

The heavy haulage specialists There is no denying the fact that the forestry sector is on a high right now. On the back of booming log exports to China, low shipping rates and strong domestic demand, log harvesting (or logging for short) has reached record levels.

Back in the mid-1960s when Graeme Sole and his wife Noeline started out in business, plantation forestry was still a very young industry.

It took people of grit, strength and determination to succeed in this challenging and dangerous environment. The company began with just one bulldozer and a transporter, developing land for farmers and Lands and Survey blocks in the Taranaki and King Country areas.

Graeme also took up log cartage and was involved with the first shipment of export logs from Westgate in 1967.

From that time onward logging has grown to become the most significant part of the GJ Sole business.

In 1992 Graeme and Noeline’s son Allan formed a logging gang and began purchasing wood lots. Logging gangs and heavy equipment are supplied for harvesting and transport; pulp domestic logs and logs for export are bought and sold.

Over 30 highly-visible, giant Kenworth, Western Star, Hino and Cat trucks ply the highways of the North Island, transporting logs from the plantations to sawmills and pulp and paper processing plants, or to the ports of Tauranga and Taranaki for shipping to China, India, Korea or Japan.

Diversification is often the key to success and longevity in business. The fledging GJ Sole

Transport Ltd evolved around bulldozing and transporting pipe and equipment for McConnell Dowell throughout the North Island, and then with carting equipment for the onshore and offshore drilling programmes in the region.

Today with its 550hp Western Star, Kenworth and Cat trucks - true monsters of the road – GJ Sole Transport hauls cranes and excavators, concrete panels and bulldozers, drilling equipment and casing pipe from location to location.

Loads of 50 tonnes are commonplace and special permits are often required because of the height, width and weight of the loads.

Both the logging and heavy haulage parts of the business are highly specialised, requiring the right people for the job who are skilled and enthusiastic.

GJ Sole Transport and Sole Logging now employ over 105 people – logging crews, drivers, mechanics, engineers and office and administration staff.

The companies operate with the clear mission statement: “To use their team’s expertise and commitment to be the most innovative and prosperous transportation and logging companies in New Zealand”. Simply translated this means “to be the best at what we do”.
