Focus on automotive Richard says Access Lock Specialists is working hard to grow its range of services and is now focusing heavily on the automotive locksmith market.

“We have a full container-height roller door into our workshop and we can take any sized vehicle, from buses to trucks and cars,” he says.

“We’ve expanded into the back of our workshop and now have plenty of vehicle workshop space and secure storage.”

While the company has always done automotive keys, it is currently increasing its workload with electronic transponder keys, which are computer chipped in the key head.

“We can programme them and make new ones.

There have always been a lot of grey areas around transponder keys, but there have been a lot of

advances in technology to counter that. It’s a very interesting aspect of our business and we’re moving rapidly from mechanical to electronic.”

The Cavius detectors advertised as the World’s Smallest Smoke & Heat Alarms are both Photoelectric and Thermal with 10 year longlife batteries. Similar in size to a golf ball, they are easy to install and almost unnoticed on the ceiling.

The Quell personal alarm is ideal for walkers, joggers, the elderly, disabled people, night shift workers, and people who live alone.

They are small enough to keep in a handbag or purse and emit a loud 100db alarm when activated.

There is also a range of Yale wireless alarms and Abus wireless cameras which can easily be installed by the DIY’er. The alarms are priced from $359.00 and include Standard, Family and Premium options, with the Premium being able to text activations to your mobile. The Abus 16000 camera setup includes internet connection which allows video and activation emails to be sent to your smart phone.

The unit comes with one camera but can accept up to four.

As the National-led government moves into another term, we are totally focussed on the issues that matter to New Zealanders. One of those issues is health.

National understands that it is only by having a strong economy that we can lift opportunities and incomes for Kiwi families, and provide world leading public services such as good quality healthcare.

Canterbury has been an important focus for redevelopment of healthcare services since the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. People working in the health system in Canterbury have had to deal with some extremely tough challenges following the earthquakes.

Staff throughout Canterbury are doing an outstanding job while earthquake repairs are ongoing and new facilities are constructed. The Government is committed to building new, high quality health facilities in Christchurch.

Combined, the Christchurch and Burwood hospital developments represent the most significant public hospital projects ever in New Zealand, together costing an estimated $650 million. The money is coming from the revenue gained from the share floats carried out last term of the state-owned power companies, and the Government’s share selldown in Air New Zealand.

The redevelopment and the repair programme in Canterbury is progressing well.

The vision the Government has for healthcare in Canterbury is for a connected and sustainable health system, centred on providing for people.

The construction of the new Acute Services building at Christchurch Hospital - on target to be completed in 2018 - is an exciting project that is a vital part of meeting future healthcare needs. Without the Acute Services building, Christchurch’s hospital facilities would begin to fall short of healthcare needs by 2018.

The Burwood Health Campus will have 230 new inpatient beds, a new front of house area including a main entrance, café and reception, a new back of house area comprising a hospital kitchen, supply and distribution area and the plant to support these areas. It will also include an extended radiology department, and a new outpatient department able to manage 80,000 outpatient visits a year.​ Looking nationwide, we have a set of six National Health Targets in areas such as access to elective surgery, shorter wait times for cancer treatment, and increased levels of immunisation.

I am proud of what the National-led Government is achieving with the health system, and I’m sure we will continue to see improved results and good progress with new facilities to meet the needs of people in Canterbury.

Every company I talk with readily recognises the importance of good customer service and putting the customer first. Why then, do we find that service people often treat us though we are a nuisance and that we may owe them something?

As we head toward the end of another year, the focus is shifting to how the prospects for 2015 are shaping up.

Is it getting worse or better? How often do you feel neglected, frustrated and unhappy with the levels of “service” you receive?

Why is it that some companies endear themselves to us while others just don’t seem to care or even know how to please? I am sure people go to work not intending to fail.

Economic growth is diverging

Today customers want more value. If they value lower cost they want it cheaper. If it’s convenience, they want it faster. If it’s more technologically advanced, they want it smarter, lighter, faster and easier.

Most companies have access to similar levels of technology and in these cases the key to successful differentiation can often sit with the level of customer service we provide.

In order for organisations to excel, they must do more than simply satisfy their customers. They must differentiate themselves and their employees in significant ways that add value to the customer’s experience. They must provide a premium service that is unique, faster, more reliable, more responsive and more caring than ever before. What was once special treatment is today ordinary and we all must look for ways to deliver service standards that go above and beyond.

Companies must: • Act with professionalism and self confidence • Demonstrate an understanding of the customer’s needs and expectations • Exceed the customer’s needs and expectations.

Customer service is everyone’s responsibility. The loyalty of your customers is likely to be the most important asset of your company.

Everyone in your company provides customer service whether that service is internal or external. If the provision of great customer service to internal clients becomes your culture, then that same great customer service will be provided externally.

Your company can become very successful and differentiate itself if you have a greater understanding and knowledge of who your customers are, what their unique needs are, why they should do business with you (what’s in it for them), and what value you give them that can’t be gained elsewhere.

Remember, customers do have choice. Make it easy for your customers to do business with you and your business will grow and become more profitable.

Thinking ahead to next year, there are a number of economic and investment themes emerging that I think will shape the way markets perform over the coming year.

The US is leading the charge on the growth front, with monthly employment gains at the highest levels in 15 years and manufacturing indicators at a three year high. The UK is also looking solid, while Europe and Japan face low growth, high debt levels and risks of deflation and China is moving into a more moderate period of growth.

New Zealand is certainly better placed than most with a stable government, falling unemployment, a strong construction sector and surging migration.

There is no inflation, anywhere Almost everywhere in the world, inflation is tracking close to the bottom of central bank target ranges. Locally, consumer prices were up just one percent for the year to September and there appears to be very little pressure on any central banks to tighten monetary policy settings significantly.

Interest rates to stay low, but central banks are starting to go their own way The Federal Reserve in the US and the Bank of England are expected to increase interest rates during 2015. At the other end of the scale are the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank, where we will see additional stimulus, money printing and very low interest rates. New Zealand and Australia already have higher benchmark rates than global peers, and our central banks are likely to remain on the sidelines until late next year, or even into 2016.

A mixed performance is likely for the NZ dollar The resurgent US dollar should continue to gain momentum, which should keep the NZ dollar on a steady downward trend against the greenback. We see a similar path for our currency against the British Pound, albeit probably to a lesser degree. But against the Euro and the Japanese Yen, we expect the NZ dollar to remain strong and potentially rise even further from current levels.

SKOPE’s half century of innovation

SKOPE’s story is anything but black and white, as published in an exciting new autobiography by founder Sir Robert Stewart The year 2014 has been a year of milestones for SKOPE’s founder, Sir Robert Stewart, who earlier in the year was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit to manufacturing and the community.

Last month, Sir Robert struck another goal off his “bucket list” when he launched his autobiography, Determined to Win, published by Random House.

“Sir Robert Stewart may have been born into a successful manufacturing family, but he had to set up his own company the hard way, using his own money, courage, street smarts and creativity,” it says.

Sir Robert’s account of starting SKOPE, manufacturing, exporting and holding on to the family business is a lively memoir in which he shares insights into being successful in one of the most challenging business environments.

It tells the story of a man who, over five decades, led the business through economic ups and downs, tough times and highlights, to become one of New Zealand’s leading manufacturers and exporters.

A dedicated husband, father and grandfather, between time spent in the office, on the factory floor and building partnerships and reputation offshore, Sir Robert has led a fulfilling life outside of SKOPE – racing cars and building yachts and enjoying his recreational pursuits with his wider family and friends.

Along the way he has started a radio station, helped drive the 1974 Commonwealth Games, become president of the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, and chair of the Canterbury Manufacturer’s Association and the Government’s Health Research Council. He has also been honoured as an Ernst & Young Master Entrepreneur.

An entrepreneur who has never been afraid to think outside the square, Sir Robert left school at age 15 to take up an apprentice electrician role with the Government, going on to work at Christchurch Airport and at Paparua prison. His passion later took him to England, where he studied engineering at Cranfield College. On his return to New Zealand, Sir Robert worked for his father’s company, PDL Industries, for five years.

At 25, Sir Robert purchased Christchurch-based Robat Avon Industries, which he rebranded to SKOPE Enterprises. It was from here that he went on to build the country’s leading heating company, expanding the business to include commercial refrigeration products and building an international export market.

As the company celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015, it marks a half century at the forefront of the industry, both locally and globally. The company continues to occupy the same site, at 66 Princess Street, but has since expanded, creating a research, design and production plant utilising the whole block.

Today SKOPE designs and manufactures commercial refrigeration and foodservice products for the hospitality and retail sectors, from restaurants, bars and conference facilities, to commercial kitchens, supermarkets and convenience stores, and to industries as diverse as the health, aged care, mining and food processing sectors.

Having exited the heating market, today SKOPE Industries is a global player in the commercial refrigeration market.

An extensive product range includes chillers, freezers, blast chillers and shock freezers, cool and freezer rooms and the customisation of product to suit clients’ individual specifications and requirements.

Two of Sir Robert’s children, Guy and Alexandra, share their father’s drive and passion for the family business and have taken over the helm of SKOPE, which now employs more than 300 people and has a far reaching global presence.

Lady Barbara Stewart is involved with philanthropic work and the arts in Canterbury, along with her children Marcus and Alexandra. Sir Robert remains an active member of the company’s Board and is thrilled to have his book hit the shelves.

In today’s economic climate most of us are trying to keep our operational costs to a minimum, while trying to balance adequate service levels.

Starting a business can be a good idea, especially if you have a viable idea you are passionate about and cannot find a suitable existing business to buy and re-direct.

“What are you here for? And you, and you…?” – down the line he went. As each student replied he just said, “Go back to your classroom and get on with your work.”

Normally, when you cut costs there is a trade off with the level of service that you can offer. However, in customer service teams, there is something that you can measure and improve on.

However, as failure rates show, there are risks. There are many factors to consider when you start a business, including your skills, the benefits, costs, risks and easier options.

Nothing was said to the teachers; no punishment was meted out by the principal. As the days went by the potential chain gang outside his door grew smaller and smaller until, a week later, he opened his door to find no children.

Often companies around New Zealand don’t give too much thought to measuring and improving their customer services. If they were going to investigate anything at all it should be FCR – First Call Resolution.

Under the previous principal the school had struggled with a major discipline problem; the boss had been the external provider of discipline instead of empowering his teachers to take responsibility, to manage their own environment.

What is FCR? There are different definitions for FCR, but I like to think of it as getting it right the first time. This means when a customer calls you with an issue you solve it in one phone call.

How to build this sense of ownership

Why is this important? Every time a customer has to call your company back because their issue wasn’t resolved the first or second time, those second and third calls cost you a lot of money.

A very experienced principal, newly appointed to a troubled city school, opened his door about an hour into his first day at work to find a row of faces looking back. About 10 children were lined up waiting for discipline.

Ask yourself; “How do I enlist and involve my colleagues?

How do I help them feel a sense of ownership with their work and with the organisation?”

Let’s look at some facts and figures. An FCR of 68 percent is average in the USA – NZ might be a little lower. This means 32 percent of customers have to call back; reduce this and you reduce your running costs enormously.

About 15 percent of customers who don’t get a resolution are likely to go to a competitor, this will have a big impact on your business. And FCR is directly related to customer satisfaction – a one percent increase in FCR will get you a one percent increase in customer satisfaction.

Once your customer service representative thinks that they have solved the issue get them to ask the customer ‘Did I solve the problem for you today?’

The answer will tell you if you still have some work to do.

If the answer is yes, then job done. If the answer is no, or hesitation, then the response should be “Thanks for telling me, can you please explain how else I can be of help and I’ll do my best to find a solution?”

This is so simple it’s beautiful. Once you do this the next step is to find a way to work out how often you get it right the first time.

People start businesses for all kinds of reasons, such as the money, realising your dream, getting to control your own destiny and job security. You work on your own terms, including when you work, where, who with and how much you earn.

This all sounds very good, so it’s important to remember that starting a business is considered high risk territory.

To make sure you have your best chance of being on the right side of scary statistics like “53 percent of small businesses fail within the first three years,” you need to honestly assess your business idea before you start.

Firstly, you need to determine that there is an opportunity in the market for what you want to do; that there is not too much competition, or a lack of interest in your product or service.

Then consider whether you can secure the resources you will need including reliable suppliers, staff, a building in the right location, etc.

You will also need to take into account what your start-up costs will be, how long it will realistically take to break even, and how long you are able to support a business that is not breaking even.

Owning your own business now offers arguably as much job security as working for a large corporation however, starting a business from scratch is not the only way to become your own boss and you should always weigh up easier and less risky options - like buying a business.

In buying and adapting an existing business you will often start with a customer base and cashflow, saving you time and money, and still be able to alter the direction of the business to be in keeping with your vision. If you are able to start up a new business with good skills, financial controls and knowledge of your market, then your chances of success are greatly improved.

One of the most common conversations I have with businesses about their website design is around the use of images. Images can include photos, graphics, drawings, or pretty much anything that is visual and not words.

Why are images important?

This is an easy one. The answer is a resounding yes and the reasons why are various. Images build trust and credibility, visual content engages much more than the written word, images convey a clear message as to what your business does.

When do I need to use an image?

Any image that you use must be appropriate to your business, your message and your market. An image is not meant to confuse; it is meant to enhance your website and engage visitors to your site so that they take the action you want them to take.

Don’t be tempted to use an image just for the sake of having one. White space on a website doesn’t need to be filled with an image that serves no purpose.

What quality should the images be?

Again, this is an easy one to answer: high quality every single time. In fact, if the images are not of a high quality then it is best not to add them to your website as it can do your brand more harm than good.

Poor quality images will create the wrong first impression as potential customers may make the assumption your products or services are of poor quality too. It is definitely worth the investment in hiring a professional photographer if you are not so flash at taking photos.

Can we use any image we find on the Internet?

Just because an image is available on the Internet for all to see, it does not mean that you can use it on your website, even though it may be the perfect image for your needs.

Many images are subject to copyright so to be safe it is best to use your own photos or design your own images.

Why are team photos so important?

People buy from people so including photos of your team on your website conveys a sense of trust, credibility and transparency.

In conclusion - the right images on your website will increase engagement and conversion. The wrong images will have the opposite effect. If you are in doubt about whether to use an image or not then it is probably best not to.

Something I commonly hear when I’m out and about visiting various organisations is that, although people would love to, they say “there’s no budget” for creating a healthy workplace.

As a business owner myself, I do of course appreciate this and know even the largest of projects generally has budget constraints and an unfulfilled ‘nice-to-have’ list.

Sadly however, all too often this lack of budget leads instantly to inaction. Yet when it comes to wellbeing, inaction is the most unhealthy option.

The times are changing Traditionally when talking budgets, health and wellness has been considered an unnecessary spend for many organisations. However, as more discoveries are made about the impact work has on our physical and emotional wellbeing, this way of thinking is starting to change.

The cost of thinking ‘looks’ without also thinking ‘wellness’ is now being measured and the findings are clear; organisations who invest in designing and maintaining healthy workplaces are saving money and very often being recognised for it.

Small changes make a big difference The reality is that whatever your budget, for relatively little or even no cost, you can begin to create a healthier workplace.

I find one of the most effective ways start to create a healthy workplace is with good intent. Whether it’s a board or management team implementing a policy specifically outlining a commitment to create and support a healthy, sustainable work space culture, or a bunch of workmates making their own team plan, each small change makes a difference and any small change can make a big difference.

Encourage movement Wherever and whenever possible, encourage movement in your workplace. It’s easy when you’re immersed in your everyday tasks to forget to move. Remind people to stretch during the day. Stretching helps your muscles to get more oxygen into them and relax.

Freshen up your surroundings Brighten up work spaces wherever possible. Put some plants around the place and make a real difference to the atmosphere.

Go with the flow Any really healthy workplace of course factors people into the equation. Spend some time watching what people physically do in your work environment throughout the day and consider if the space actually works well for them individually and for your wider team. Can people move around easily? If not, try changing the room layout. It can always go back to how it was.

EQ experience pays off for local firm The successful upgrade of the Christchurch Airport in extreme circumstances has played a major role in Hawkins securing the $58m extension of Wellington Airport.

Hawkins chief executive officer, Geoff Hunt says the construction of the new airport terminal in Christchurch during the Canterbury earthquakes has given his staff invaluable knowledge around working as invisibly as possible in complex operational environments.

“We will use our project delivery experience and knowledge, earned through large scale airport projects in Christchurch and Auckland, to work collaboratively with the designers and the airport to deliver a significant gateway asset for Wellington,” he said after Wellington Airport announced the 6,000 sqm extension of its main terminal building and apron.

When the main Wellington terminal was opened in 1999, around 9,500 passengers flowed through the airport each day. That has now increased to 15,000 on average with busy days reaching up to 20,000.

Hawkins has worked on numerous airport projects for more than 25 years within New Zealand and internationally. After recently completing the Integrated Terminal at Christchurch International Airport, Hawkins is now delivering the Nadi International Airport modernisation project in Fiji and two air-side projects at Auckland International Airport.

Surviving the silly season cashflow flummox Christmas may be a festive time of year, but many small and medium sized enterprises face cashflow challenges during the holiday season and need to plan ahead.

Bibby Financial Services managing director, Mark Cleaver says collections can often be problematic as payables staff take annual leave and invoices often get forgotten. “Add to this the traditional slowdown in sales over the New Year, and it is a period of heightened risk of dried up cashflows for many SMEs.” Early preparation is key for the financial health of a business and to avoid a holiday hangover, he says. “The average small business now waits almost twice the standard 30 days for payment of invoices, 53.4 days according to Dun & Bradstreet’s June quarter Trade Payments Analysis, so most SMEs need to act early to avoid payments blowing out beyond this time.”

Identifying potential problems is important to managing them, so here are some important tips for SMEs on getting around some key cashflow challenges over the festive season.

1. Invoice early and often, and request a deposit Delayed payments from customers can have a serious impact on a business’s ability to grow its sales and profitability. So invoice early to encourage earlier payment. Make it clear what your payment terms are and enforce them.

2. Deal with potential late payers as soon as possible As soon as you become aware of a customer not paying, demand payment or consider threatening legal action. Don’t let the customer get the upper hand.

3. Investigate solutions to improve receivables management in the quiet period The more procedures that you have in place, the more likely your staff will collect invoices on time. Consider running credit checks on all customers periodically and avoid non-payers.

4. Take the time to review credit reports or consider credit insurance Being a period of cashflow strain for many

businesses, debtor insolvencies can cause serious cashflow issues and raise the risk of bad debt. Credit insurance can pay off in the long run.

5. Clear overstocks and inventories now Significant amounts of much needed cash can be locked up in unsold inventories, so use them.

8. Consider a holiday shut down Examine outgoings and shut down over the holiday period if necessary to minimise costs.

Temporary staff training tips

Christmas is just around the corner once again and so too is the busiest time of the year for many businesses.

You are probably already preparing your business up for the mad rush and possibly hiring temporary staff to help deal with the influx of customers.

A lot of companies take on temporary staff during the summer period to cope with the extra demand; on average, businesses facing this seasonal influx will increase their staff numbers by 30 percent.

This is the time for your company to perform at its peak and having slack or poorly trained casual staff to help manage the customer influx is not a mistake you want to make.

Having staff on the shop floor who don’t know how to do their job correctly won’t just lose you revenue during the silly season, but it can also ruin your reputation and the opportunity to gain repeat customers in 2015.

To avoid this from happening it is essential to train extra staff with the same, if not more, time, care and attention you would give to a person you are taking on full time.

Utilise these simple steps to help make your temporary staff’s training as quick, efficient and smooth as possible and your business will be sure to have a very merry Christmas.

Warm welcome

Welcoming seasonal staff into the business and making them feel part of the team may seem like a waste of time when you are busy, but it is vital that you do it properly.

Helpful tip Get in contact with the temporary staff you used last year and offer them the job. Using people with existing skills and prior knowledge of your company’s processes, polices and culture will save you a substantial amount of time and money on training someone new and make the hiring process much smoother.

One blink and they’re gone. Within three to five seconds of arriving on your website, visitors will decide whether or not you’re worth another moment of their precious time.

You need to capture their attention and spark their interest. And even if they don’t stay, you want them to get your one key message before they move on.

That’s a big ask. But here are seven tried and true techniques to make sure you don’t lose visitors before they have a chance to find out that your product or service is exactly what they need.

Make your value proposition your most important headline.

Most visitors will read your first headline. But three quarters of visitors don’t read any further.

If your headline fails to convince visitors to keep reading, your website fails. Start with a headline that states the key benefit of your product or service. Follow it with a simple one-sentence value proposition that supports your headline.

Q. What is a value proposition?

A. Simply put, it’s the answer to ‘why should I buy from you?’

Use attractive, uncluttered design and high quality images.

Avoid clutter. If the screen is full of images and words, visitors won’t know where to look. Make your site simple and well organised, with plenty of white space, so that visitors can find what they’re looking for.

Attract visitors by using appealing design and images. Remember that images should explain what you do and support your copy. Random images, however lovely, will detract from your message and frustrate visitors who try to figure out their significance. Every picture must help to explain who you are and what you do.

1. Make it easy for people to find their way around your site Make your navigation easy to see and easy to follow. Your top level navigation should organise the most important information on your site, helping visitors to find what they need at the click of a button.

Use very clear words for your navigation labels, so that visitors instantly understand what they’re going to find.

Navigation really benefits from user-testing. Find out what top level categories people expect to see on a site like yours and make sure you follow your users’ advice.

2. Write interesting, easily read text On the web, everyone is in a hurry. Make sure your text is extremely clear. We call web writing ‘plain English on steroids’. Plain English documents are easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to act on.

On your webpage, all the plain English rules apply, but even more so because of your visitor’s hurry.

Create great structure and logic, with very informative headings. Use as few words as possible to convey your meaning. And make sure those words are instantly understandable.

Stay away from jargon and clichés. Write directly to your visitor, with ‘you’, and ‘we’ language.

3. Put important information in the top part of the page Put your most important information where it will be seen; in front of your visitor when the web page opens. If visitors have to scroll past pretty design to find anything worth reading, they’re unlikely to bother.

4. Optimise for mobile technology Make sure your site works on mobile phones and tablets. Today, those are the preferred web surfing devices for many people. Make sure your pages scale to mobile size, and that mobile devices can view your images. Make links large enough to be easy to click on with a thumb.

Present your text in a single column.

5. Make it easy to take the next step Once visitors decide they want what you’re offering, make it easy for them to get it.

Shear determination It’s par for the course these days for businesses worldwide to obsess about maximising profits, while at the same time saving the environment and giving consumers everything they ever asked for.

But when a company actually achieves this, or something exceedingly close, then you know it has a formula worth taking note of; step up Icebreaker.

The brainchild of Cantabrian Jeremy Moon, Icebreaker was formed out of the desire to build something purposeful.

As a leading design and manufacturer of high performance merino wool base layers

and outdoor clothing, the company is serving the environment, meeting people’s needs and just happened to go some way to pulling New Zealand’s merino wool industry from the brink of bankruptcy.

Davina Richards talks to Jeremy Moon about his company and the desire to make a difference.

News | Cover story For Jeremy, building Icebreaker was never about self interest, it was about tapping into the potential of a quality New Zealand material, but doing so with green fingers so to speak.

“We’re committed to building an energetic, ethical company that puts our customers and environment first,” Jeremy says.

“Starting Icebreaker wasn’t a decision, it was a feeling based on my love for New Zealand, adventure and our merino wool. It felt totally intuitive and was more like a leap of faith to bring it all together. It was actually liberating taking responsibility for it - kind of like a sense of being in control of my own destiny.”

Established in 1994 and now headquartered in Auckland, Icebreaker supplies clothing to more than 5,000 stores in 50 countries and has a global network of “TouchLab” company-owned retail stores throughout New Zealand, Australia and in major international cities like New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Chicago and Vancouver.

The company’s 24th location recently opened in Ponsonby, Auckland. Holding the fibres of the company together, so to speak, is a core team in New Zealand, Portland, Oregon, Vancouver B.C. Canada, and Starnberg, Germany, leading the business and 430 staff spread out across the globe.

Leading the flock Icebreaker was formed on intuition and Jeremy tries his best to ensure that all decisions are shaped by his instinct and the influential people he surrounds himself with, such as Noel Todd and Peter Travers.

“I’ve been fortunate to have two amazing directors who were with me for the first 18 years of Icebreaker. They were formative in the creation of Icebreaker and have been wonderful mentors for me. They both retired last year as they weren’t getting any younger and encouraged me to find new directors,” Jeremy says.

Suffice to say, Jeremy appointed Rob Fyfe as the new CEO of Icebreaker in May, while he himself stepped into the executive chairman of the board and creative director position. Rob had already served as executive chairman for Icebreaker for nine months and has been on the board since 2012. A new office in Auckland opened in November and 30 new roles have been created under the inspiring leadership of Rob. “Rob and I have a true partnership approach to Icebreaker, and work very closely together.

He’s an amazing CEO and brings out the best in people. I’m a naturally curious and creative person and having Rob as CEO lets me focus at a higher level on the vision and purpose for the company, knowing Rob is using his strong CEO skills to bring out the real potential of our people and organisation.

“This new structure has also allowed me to follow my passion around design, branding and product creation, and I think we still have huge potential.”

He refers to his other passion, Better by Design, a business which brings design thinking into New Zealand export-focussed companies and to help them evolve and thrive on an international level. He has been the founding chairman since it started nine years ago. “This is my way of sharing the positive learning and

experiences I’ve had within Icebreaker across other New Zealand businesses.”

In addition to chairing Better by Design, he also works with business schools such as Harvard Business School and the University of Otago, and occasionally mentors people whose passion inspires him.

First steps Jumping back to when Jeremy’s love affair with merino wool first started, and when he instigated Icebreaker in 1994, he wanted to make merino wool thermal underwear for sports, but merino wool fabrics didn’t even exist.

So it was up to a 24 year old Jeremy to learn how to make them. With no experience in the apparel business, he admits he made plenty of mistakes.

“In our first production run we had sleeves that were four inches too short because the garments shrunk after the batch of fabric was cut, but because you’re living on a knife edge there is always a way and I got my money back when we sold those as a range of kids clothing,” he says.

“In the second batch the white garments turned yellow, so you can imagine it was just one disaster after another. Eventually I ran out of mistakes to make and that’s when things started getting fun.”

Every two to three years Icebreaker goes through a radical metamorphosis due to how it responds to internal or external forces, “we call this shedding our skin”.

In 1996 a bad batch of merino wool yarn resulted in Icebreaker garments falling apart. “That was a complete game changer for the company. We responded by offering contracts directly with the wool growers, paying a long term premium price in exchange for the highest quality and ethics.

This was also a game changer for the merino wool industry in New Zealand and helped lift it from near bankruptcy,” Jeremy says.

In 2003, manufacturing capacity was exceeded and deliveries were falling six to eight weeks behind, so manufacturing was shifted from New Zealand to a global supply chain based in Shanghai. “This gave us access to new technology, higher quality, and world scale.”

In 2007 Icebreaker moved its overseas sales offices to fully owned companies within its key markets such as Germany, Canada, Switzerland and the U.S. “For the past two years we’ve started opening our own retail stores and eCom business to complement the 5,000 outdoor and snow sports stores we supply globally. Each of these challenges requires a clear vision across the future of the company and the whole team working together aligned with that vision,” he adds.

All or nothing When I imagine jumping on the business bandwagon it conjures up anxiety directly related to things such as administrative hurdles, financial decisions and legal activities. Business is filled with risk and processes we’d rather not deal with, but at the end of the day passion fuels the idea to build something with meaning and one we want to share with others.

“

So when you run out of mistakes, just like how Jeremy did, your hard work is measured by success; a success which along the way has been fun and creative, and completely outweighs the hardship you’ve spent months or years overcoming.

For Jeremy, a business plan was critical because it helped to break his thinking down into steps which helped him to “imagine a future of running Icebreaker as an international business from New Zealand. When you get into the swing of it, planning is actually fun and creative and doesn’t have to be complex or scary.”

Large sums of money in the bank will no doubt have a positive effect on anyone, but using money as an enabling force is a more satisfying value. “Entrepreneurialism is an approach to life that reflects a love of building something purposeful. It’s about training your mind to see opportunity and explore scenarios. You need the vision to be inspired by the future in your mind, and the courage to act and follow things through.”

To create a successful purpose-driven business there’s simply no room for insular thinking. “Don’t lock it inside your head and keep it all to yourself.

Share it with others and allow them to contribute.

Ask for help from people you admire.”

Jeremy says his best decisions are when he’s got the “right mix of analysis and intuition,” and listening to his gut not just his head; opening the first Icebreaker retail store and starting a new product category such as socks is evidence of this.

“My worst decisions are normally when I didn’t make a decision in time or didn’t follow my intuition. For example I wish I appointed a strong chief information officer a few years ago – that would have helped us avoid a lot of expensive systems mistakes we have made.

“To be successful in business, it requires you to give it your all; every ounce of sweat, blood and tears - you’ll have more highs and lows in a month than most people have in a year and it requires a total passionate commitment and belief, and an unflinching focus on building the business you’re committed to.”

Businesses stand up to solve youth social issues As New Zealand’s youth organisations face an unprecedented funding crisis, businesses nationwide are standing up with new social brand Y for YOUTH to solve our serious youth social issues.

New Zealand has the highest youth suicide rate in the developed world, yet there are more than 6,000 charities dedicated to assisting our youth throughout the country.

Y for YOUTH co-founder Alex Greig says “There are hundreds of very successful programmes out there already in the community. The problem is that they are competing with each other for a diminishing pool of government grants, public donations and gaming trust money, which is limiting their ability to scale and expand capacity and in some instances threatening their very survival.”

Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation CEO, Craig Pollock says he and his organisation are fully aware of the impending youth sector funding crisis.

“Even as one of the larger youth organisations, it is a major challenge finding alternative revenue streams just to fund our current programmes. I suspect a lot of smaller youth organisations may simply not survive the next few years.”

Yet as traditional funding sources for the charity sector continue to decline, New Zealand’s alarming youth social statistics, such as bullying and suicide, continue to increase. Just last year there was a 40 percent increase in youth suicide for 15 – 19 year olds.

What can we do about our youth social issues and the youth sector funding crisis?

“New Zealand’s youth social problems are not going to be solved with sausage sizzles and the old method of rattling the bucket outside shopping centres. Our serious social problems require serious resources and funding,” Greig says.

Y for YOUTH is a turnkey corporate social responsibility platform that enables businesses to contribute to the youth sector in such a way that they benefit from positive publicity and increased sales.

Businesses and brands contribute a percentage of their profits to the Y for YOUTH support network.

Through the creation of a sustained funding platform for New Zealand’s youth sector, youth organisations’ fundraising burdens can be alleviated so they can focus on expanding their programmes and impacting as many youth as possible throughout New Zealand.

The second stage of the $400 million Waterloo Business Park is nearing completion, offering a wide range of opportunities for businesses, explains development manager Hamish Clarke.

“The intention for Waterloo Business Park was never for a large, bland industrial space,” Hamish says.

“We believe that there is no excuse for unattractive industrial spaces,” he says. “Parklike grounds shouldn’t be exclusively for central city office workers. Everyone should be able to work somewhere where you can eat your lunch or go for a walk somewhere appealing.”

While this directly benefits staff working in the precinct, the businesses can also expect to see long term benefits from the area. “Attracting and keeping staff is one of the biggest issues facing businesses in Canterbury. Working somewhere beautiful will be appealing to potential and current employees.”

Set on the site of the former Islington Freezing Works, construction of the 114 hectare business park is taking place in a series of carefully managed stages over a comprehensive timeline.

Stage One, the Pound Road Southern Precinct, was completedin 2014, welcoming its first tenant, Santa Rosa Foods, to a new 2,500 square metre factory in early September.

With Stage Two nearly complete, Transdiesel, Conroys Removals, Cardinal and Davis Trading are soon to establish premises in the business park, along with a number of other leading Canterbury companies still to announce.

There has been considerable interest in the 17 lots for sale in this initial offering, with all but three sites already sold or under offer.

Stage Two, encompassing the Pound Road Northern Precinct, is due to be completed in January, with a focus on warehousing, distribution and production. There are 22 plots available in a variety of section sizes, some larger than those available in the park’s first stage.

“We can sell you the land, we can design, build and sell you the building, or we can provide leasing options,” Hamish explains.

“We are in the process of developing a package for a multi-unit development which is getting ready to kick off soon.”

Aside from the innovative spaces available, Waterloo Business Park also offers a competitive location, just 10 km from the Christchurch Airport in the western corridor of the Garden City.

“We’re situated just 13 km to the central city, Hornby Hub is just 2 km away, you can take Pound Road to go north to the airport, an extension to Halswell Junction Road in Hornby comes into the subdivision and it is close to the railway lines,” Hamish says.

“It’s hard to beat as far as connections go.”

An element of the Islington Freezing Works’ character is being retained in the park’s construction, with several of the former buildings being developed to maintain the historic character of the site. “We could see that retaining the buildings would benefit the precinct aesthetically,” Hamish says.

“This could provide the opportunity for a café or for a small business incubator to become established.”

First announced seven years ago with the backing of Timaru financier Allan Hubbard, the development momentum increased due to the need for industrial property fuelled by the Canterbury rebuild.

The late Hubbard’s place in the project has been bought out by Auckland developer John Sax, while Southland businessmen, truck racer and former politician, Ian Tulloch and long time business partner Paul Johnstone remain on board.

Not only does Waterloo Business Park represent a major injection into the Canterbury economy, conservative estimates suggest $400 million will be spent in construction and a further $30 million in infrastructure. The park will house up to 5,000 permanent employees and is expected to create hundreds of local construction jobs.

The main engineer, local engineering and design consultancy firm Harrison Grierson, has

Award winning flavour The name Original Foods hints at the company’s innovative and unique way of business. But it’s the local baked foods supplier’s Business Innovation award at this year’s NZ Food Awards which really seals the deal.

Established in 1991 to produce donuts for local fish and chip shops, Original Foods has grown and diversified, developing a delicious product range including cakes, muffins, slices and cheesecakes sold through caterers, retailers, cafés and restaurants.

Yet it’s the renewed focus on the trusty donut which has seen the company go from strength to strength and take out the coveted innovation award.

The company was looking to update its donut range, account manager Will Jones explains.

“We got talking to our customers about how we could do that and we soon moved into a product development phase, improving our recipe and baking capabilities.”

Original Foods invested heavily into capital machinery, in particular an In-line Prover, which allows for increased efficiency while improving output. By improving the recipe, Original Foods was able to create a product range which was softer and utilised more natural ingredients, with less additives.

Once the company was satisfied with the new and improved product range, the products were rolled out, featuring updated packaging, Original Foods director Jane Mayell says.

“Original Foods started supplying food service, but increasingly our products were finding their way into the retail space. As the retail side of our business grew, so did the need to design packaging to suit our target consumers.”

Innovation has always been key to the company’s success and the award reflects this

Jane says. “Original Foods has grown through innovation. It enables us to stay ahead of the market by adapting our product ranges to suit market trends.”

The changes wouldn’t have been possible without the strong support from the production team, Will adds. “They have been flexible and adaptable throughout the process. There were a number of changes made and without the excellent team we have, it couldn’t have been done.

“Staff truly are what makes us stand out. We have a labour pool of close to 70 staff working

24-7 using good quality ingredients with a strong handmade touch to our production.”

“Two years ago we caught a monster eel that didn’t fit on the scales so we put it back. The biggest salmon caught was 6.4kg but these days they don’t grow that big anymore,” general manager Dan van der Eijk says.

“Visitors don’t have to pay an entry fee and the fishing gear is free to use. They only have to pay for the salmon they catch. For that reason we try to keep the average weight around 1.5kg to keep it affordable for everyone.

“We try to keep it challenging for the more experienced people by not overstocking the fishing lake. On the other hand, we give directions and offer additional bait for the one’s with less or no experience.”

Cosgroves offers a range of engineering and manufacturing services and is New Zealand’s largest silo manufacturer. It also makes longrun roofing iron, guttering, ridging, flashings and other associated roofing products for the construction industry.

The company was formed in 1935 by Dan Cosgrove Snr, who began working as a self employed plumber at age 24, moving later into manufacturing with one of the first continuous spouting machines in the South Island.

Gary and Juliet Fahey have retained all of Dan Cosgrove’s staff and are now seeking to grow the business. Cosgroves employs many skilled and experienced staff who have helped the company develop such a strong reputation for service and quality.

The company has its own cutting shop with power feed band saws, cold saws and guillotine sheer machines and three brake presses (one being 250 tonnes).

It also operates a fully equipped machine shop to turn and fit components ready for assembly.

Cosgroves has a fully equipped electrostatic paint shop and can paint onsite and supply the finished product to its customer.

Below outlines a break down of the design process from concept to construction.

Stage 1 – Design inspiration Contact a licensed design practitioner that has been in a long-term business, which will give you peace of mind they are a complacent designer. It can be useful to portray your ideas with such things as photos, pictures, artwork and anything that describes your vision. Once a brief has been established, you should get a written fee proposal, which outlines associated costs involved.

Stage 2 – Concept design Relevant site information, taking into consideration views, orientation, vegetation and town planning - all can be gathered at this early stage. A conceptual 3D computer generated model or sketches can be produced that will incorporate your feedback.

Stage 3 - Developed design Structural considerations and suggestions on various systems can be investigated. Developed concept design can be finalised, which will portray how the building relates to the site, sun and views.

Stage 4 – Working drawings The preparation of full working drawings and specifications, for the purpose of applying for local building consents, detailed pricing/ tendering and final construction, are completed.

This stage of the working design process will take the longest to complete.

Stage 5 – Building consent The architectural designer will liaise with the local authorities and provide them with any additional information requested.

Stage 6 – Construction The architectural designer will handle any questions from the builder regarding the construction. All site inspections would be carried out by the local authorities and managed by the main contractor onsite. Any site changes would be amended on the working drawings and resubmitted to the local council.

Established in 1922 by Thomas Sim, Sim’s Bakery is obviously well-established – and the key to this success is by keeping up to date with its customers’ requirements, continuing to be a favourite among locals.

The bakery is today owned by Brian Sim and his wife Pam, but its story of the business began when a skilled baker, Brian’s grandfather Thomas Sim, immigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in the late 1890s and established a bake house in Methven.

During the 1930s and 1940s his two sons, Stuart and Arthur, ran the business Sim Bros Ltd from Hinds.

When the two brothers parted ways, Arthur moved his Hinds business into Tinwald, on the southern side of Ashburton.

In 1985 Arthur Sim retired and Brian and Pam took over the business.

In the early years the bakery was renowned for its homemade fresh bread and was the main product of choice at the time, but today its product range has branched out serving pies, cakes and biscuits.

Initially pies were baked as winter fare, as there was not a market for them during the midCanterbury summer, but these days pies are made all year round.

Topped to the rim with a delicious filling, some of the favourites include Thai curry chicken, steak and cheese, and butter chicken pies, long sausage rolls and cream buns.

Even with 14 employees, Pam says the main challenge is keeping up with demand. Sim’s Bakery is very aware of the large clientele who require gluten-free baked goods, so Sim’s is

more than happy to supply gluten-free options including plain, savoury and cinnamon apple bread, chocolate chip cookies, sultana biscuits, burger buns and friands.

“Our projects are incredibly diverse, which means that as a company we have loads of experience and our people get to work on some really interesting projects,” Rogers says.

Paul Smith Earthmoving has recently completed the Hagley Oval project, which was a highlight for the team.

“It is really satisfying to be part of a project that is going to be utilised on an international stage. There were some significant challenges,” Rogers explains, “such as the time pressure for the World Cup and the weather conditions we had to cope with – but overall the project was a real success.”

The company has grown significantly during the past five years and in order to keep up; a new plant asset management system is being rolled out.

“It’s currently operating in all our trucks and soon it will be rolled out to the whole fleet. It’s essentially a GPS tracking system that allows us to monitor routes, speed, hours, fuel efficiency and maintenance, and it will help us to manage our off-road kilometers better.”

There is further use of technological innovation within the business, with a move to integrate survey and plant systems, which allows high levels of accuracy on technically challenging sites.

“The software contains two and three dimensional design profiles and then uses GPS to control the relevant aspect, such as the blade, of the machine. Because we have experienced guys who have been doing it for years without the technology – and doing it well – it’s a good way of testing the equipment.”

Another step forward for the company is the appointment of a new safety and compliance manager.

“We already have tertiary accreditation for ACC’s Workplace Safety Management Practices, but there are legislative changes coming and we want to make sure we stay ahead of the game.”

Also on the horizon is a slight shift in focus. Not surprisingly, since the Canterbury earthquakes the company has been involved in a large number of horizontal infrastructure projects (drainage and road works).

There are multiple benefits. A farmer using Fertmark approved fertilisers with Spreadmark accredited operators will be operating more efficiently and in an environmentally sound manner.

Working in conjunction with each other, Spreadmark and Fertmark ensure that high

quality fertiliser is manufactured, mixed and spread in a way that precision agriculture is fostered and the environment is protected. Both programmes have strong links to the Code of Practice for Fertiliser Use.

Fertmark The Fertmark Tick means that fertiliser has been independently audited to ensure what’s on the label is actually in the bag.

Fertmark is an independently assessed fertiliser quality assurance programme.

Fertmark Fertilisers have ongoing, independent and vigorous auditing.

If the fertiliser has the Fertmark tick farmers know it will be true to label.

Spreadmark Spreadmark accreditation means that spreading operators have been trained, their equipment independently assessed and systems audited.

Farmers can be confident a Spreadmark operator will place fertiliser where farmers want it.

Spreadmark is an independently audited spreading quality assurance scheme.

Spreadmark spreaders are subject to ongoing certification and training.

If the operator has the Spreadmark tick, farmers know that their fertiliser is being applied at an even rate and distribution pattern.

The packaging specialists Talk to Nadia Marinelli, managing director of Shardlows, the packaging specialists, about the business she leads and her face lights up with pride. That’s not surprising because Shardlows has been in operation since 1965, so are celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2015.

“My stepfather, Mike Shardlow, started the business from his garage in Oliviers Rd,” explains Nadia. “Initially he sold 3M and other office and stationery products, but then his customers began asking for different products and so he branched out into other items. Shardlows moved to its current premises in Saxon Street, Phillipstown in the 1970s and Mike Shardlow continued to operate it until his death in 2013. Nadia began to work with her stepfather some 20 years ago and stepped up seamlessly into the managing director’s role when that became necessary.

A growing future Southern Woods Plant Nursery was established on a patch of bare land in 1987, growing predominantly eucalyptus and acacias for fuel-wood and shelter belts.

Since those first seeds were sown the company has grown at a fantastic rate, to now produce more than 750,000 trees per year with more than 500 varieties.

“Getting it wrong can be devastating.” It’s a fact which demonstrates the importance of the industry tasked with supporting the very fabric of society – our families.

“From then a large number of employers required social workers to become members of ANZASW, because the competency of members was assessed independently,” Lucy explains.

For 50 years now, the ANZASW has been supporting social workers, providing a framework for best practise, encouraging professional development and providing resources to its members. The ANZASW is a membership organisation run for and by its members.

Yet 11 years after voluntary registration was introduced, there is no compulsory registration process for social workers. “In New Zealand, anyone can call themselves a social worker, without any specific skills or qualifications, a fact which can have dire consequences.

The year 2003 marked the change in public perception with social workers becoming more accountable in the public arena. But it hasn’t gone far enough.

“The 1964 establishment of the association was a coming of age for the industry,” co-chair of the C50 team, Fiona Robertson says.

“It was a reflection of social workers' understanding their professional responsibilities and their obligations to safe practise. The aim was to provide a forum for social workers to improve their standing, to affiliate with international bodies and to provide a public forum for discussion.”

A self-regulating body, the ANZASW introduced “Social workers work with extremely vulnerable competency standards and five yearly population groups and can make a significant competency assessments in 1989, well in difference to those lives,” Aotearoa New Zealand advance of industry registration – a statutory Association of Social Workers (ANZASW) chief but voluntary registration system introduced executive, Lucy Sandford-Reed explains. in 2003.

“We fully support mandatory registration; social workers work with our most vulnerable and they need to be seen as qualified, professional practitioners.”

“Sometimes it can be a matter of breaking down complex legislation, like the recent introduction of the Vulnerable Children’s Act, providing a summary guide for social workers who don’t have time to break that down,” Lucy explains.

Throughout the past 50 years, the association has seen a significant change in the educational requirements for the industry, which has moved from a two year diploma to a three year degree, and now to a four year degree.

“We’re also leading the way in bi-cultural policy.

Collaborative approach pays dividends on complex project It started from an enquiry for a fume extraction and scrubber system, and resulted in the design and building of the new engine cleaning system for Christchurch Engine Centre (CHCEC).

The project comprised of 35 1,400 litre stainless steel tanks, walkways, structural supports, fume extract and a scrubber system to remove toxic vapour.

A project valued close to $1 million was a good one for Taymac Stainless to secure.

The company headed the challenge by utilising diverse in-house capabilities and partnering with other local firms.

Conductive Education’s stepping stone to independence

Conductive Education Canterbury (CEC) offers educational programmes for children and young adults who are living with physical disabilities and motor disorders such as cerebral palsy.

Its aim is to enable each individual to gain maximum independence and to teach them skills which can be transferred into their everyday lives.

In 2008 the organisation purchased a property in Phillipstown, looking towards building two accessible homes that will meet the needs of people with physical disabilities as they make the transition to independent living in the community. While the earthquakes have slowed things down, construction of the first home is now underway with completion scheduled for late February 2015.

The property is close to the city, Polytechnic and bus routes and will be available from March 2015. Enquiries from prospective tenants or other organisations involved in providing care

What Conductive Education does

When the project is completed, the rental return from these homes will be used to financially support the ongoing running of the CEC preschool, supporting the future generations of children and families who have to live with disabilities.

Established locally in 1990 by a group of passionate parents, CEC offers a preschool designed to support the ongoing needs of children with motor disorders such as cerebral palsy. These young people have fully alert minds however, their bodies let them down.

“The project will hopefully provide some long-term security to CEC, which is a relatively small early intervention service provider offering a specialised service to a small number of preschool children,” Grant says.

As these children have grown and moved into the mainstream schooling system, Conductive Education units have been established at Addington Primary School, Cashmere High and the newly established Adults Centre.

Best in the business Taking a nod from the heady days of the 1920s, the Volstead Trading Co. is a den of serious style.

But it isn’t a case of ‘style over substance,’ in fact it’s anything but, as Volstead was voted Best Bar at the Zest Food Awards 2014, topping out nine other finalists.

And it’s easy to see why; Volstead’s eraoriented décor, fine fare and sumptuous suds make for an irresistible combination.

Opened in late 2011, the back-alley bar provides a venue where friends come to sit and lounge, chat, drink some international or local craft beers and relax in a nonchalant environment – surrounded by an eclectic mix of furnishings and entertained by melodies of local musos.

It is quite apparent the discrete entrance and name which bears no resemblance to a bar is in true Speakeasy style – the underground bar culture that became prevalent during the dark days of prohibition.

These prohibition era night clubs were renowned for being inconspicuous establishments snuck away from the public eye – often hiding behind an almost invisible façade with a light above the door as an indication something more was available within.

The Volstead Trading Co. is just that. Hidden behind a nondescript door with a small lantern light hovering above, the exterior looks just like any other to be expected down an alley way.

Yet when you walk into the converted space, it immediately takes you back to the days of prohibition where floosies, mobsters and moles were all regular visitors. Obviously the clientele of today’s bar are not quite so underworld, but the environment almost makes you do a double take of all who enter.

The décor creates not only points of interest, but gives a sense of darkness and depth to the bar. In the summer, the gathering place is a little less subtle, as garage doors are flung open with tables set up in front, to allow the sparkling westerly sun to warm patrons.

The name is a poke of fun at Andrew John Volstead, an American member of the US House

of Representatives between 1903 and 1923, and an instrumental figure in putting together the National Prohibition Act of 1919 which saw the introduction of prohibition in 1920.

The alcohol from those days was often homebrewed coming from boot-leggers. In a way the list of alcohol sold at Volstead is also in recognition of those days, with craft beers from New Zealand and all around the globe featuring on the board and served chilled to perfection to those wanting something a little less ordinary.
