It never ceases to amaze us how too many workplaces seem to lack an element of fun. It’s almost as though fun is a forbidden “F” word! There are numerous research papers that prove a fun environment creates an atmosphere where employee productivity and retention is heightened and prolonged. Oh and we’ve heard every excuse why fun isn’t as high up the ranks as it deserves to be; some of the best include excuses such as: • It’s unprofessional • We’re too busy • The clients wouldn’t approve • It’s because the staff aren’t fun • It’s too expensive In a word – Poppycock! Fun doesn’t have to mean frivolous activity and a lack of attention to the tasks at hand. It can be an ambient feeling about the place, a good belly laugh here and there, increased team cohesion. A fun environment will make productivity improve. A fun workplace typically has staff that enjoys their work more; they are calmer, less stressed and happier. People in good spirits are typically more productive. This improved mental attitude produces more oxygen, endorphins and blood flow to the brain. That in turn leads directly to clearer thinking and creativity. A fun workplace is more productive, but it also attracts more of the right people and the profits are right there also. Stop for a moment and glance around your workplace team. Are there smiles abound? A chortle? A good laugh? If not then you might have a bad case of terminal seriousness. Children have got it right… they laugh on average some 400+ times a day but by the time we hit adulthood and reach the ripe old age of mid-thirties that has plummeted to some 15 times a day. A sombre thought! Okay, so if you’re still reading then you might want to know some steps to increase fun in your workplace. As Chartered Accountants and Business Developers we are amongst two industry types that are stereotyped as being highly
professional. The fundamental rule is to lose the preconceived notion that professionalism means being “serious” all the time. It’s perfectly okay to take yourself a little more lightly and still be professional, competent and productive. A true fun environment will need to percolate from the top. If your Managers or Directors look like they’ve been weaned off mother’s breast and onto lemons you’ve likely got your work cut out for you! Fun is a bit of a continuum and it’s important to determine what is appropriate fun and what is not. For example a joke can be fun, but that’s a double edged sword if it’s racist, sexist or inappropriate. Now don’t get us wrong – political correctness can go too far as well. There’s a happy medium in there somewhere and this will differ from workplace to workplace. Adding fun is best to start off gradually so as not to blur the lines of professional and fun. A standing start of boring to fun on steroids will likely be met with scepticism and be short lived. It’s about making the fun regular, appropriate, consistent and sustainable. At our weekly Martz Group team meeting the chairperson for the day is charged with the responsibility of finding a joke, a quiz or an activity to conclude the meeting with. It’s always enjoyable waiting to find out what we are going to have to do and because the chair role is shared by the entire team, from top to bottom, the activities are as varied as the individuals who dream them up. Let’s talk about the clients, the customers… they know all too well the difference between a fun business and a solemn (a.k.a. “boring” one). It’s not about pouncing on clients when they arrive and dousing them with glitter and party poppers – even a sincere smile and well natured handshake can be an introduction of more fun. Themed days can be too extreme for some but totally appropriate for others. A toy box for visiting children and actually getting on the floor with them and emptying it out for them to search for a toy can be a living example of being a more fun place to visit. Your challenge should you accept it is to really concentrate of making your workplace a more fun environment. Already fun? Great! Set about to ensure that the fun doesn’t get diluted with the day to day business activities. Fun can be a core culture but it still takes effort to maintain it. The National-led Government continues to work hard to make New Zealand an even better place to live, work and raise a family and we have emplaced a number of important policies that will benefit families.
Management has always required people with high levels of competence and performance to competently carry out the duties and responsibilities of the role and secondly to lead others.
One of these is our HomeStart package which will help an estimated 90,000 low and middle income first home buyers into their own home over the next five years.
At the end of the day the senior management leadership challenge is to add value and this can be achieved by building the confidence of those we lead.
By the time things have stabilised and there are tangible signs of improvement, prices have already moved to reflect this and there aren’t as many bargains around. At the moment, there are varying points of view about how stable the economic outlook is, but there is a lot more agreement about how expensive markets are looking.
New Zealanders will now be able to withdraw more money from their KiwiSaver to put towards a deposit to buy their first home. We are also increasing the amount and eligibility for government grants - couples are now eligible to apply for up to $20,000 to put towards a deposit to buy a house.
It is critically important that we direct, lead and inspire the next generation of managers so as to ensure they have the skills to carry the flag in the future. The best new managers are continually being trained by their senior managers and peers and are teaching themselves to become better at their roles through learning and growth.
It’s tough to find anything offering great value at the moment. Bonds and fixed interest investments have seen their prices bid up so high that they are offering very low interest rates. Shares have had an outstanding run over the last five years and it would take the most one-eyed of property investors to argue that bargains are easy to find in the local real estate market.
Many young managers today will readily understand and comprehend the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of management however, may struggle with having the confidence to put this knowledge in to practice.
For investors that have established portfolios, this isn’t a major issue. For new investors with lump sums they would like to put to work, things are much more challenging. Jumping right in with the proceeds of your business or farm sale is hugely disconcerting. The obvious worry is that you’ll get your timing dead wrong and end up making your investment just before things go pear-shaped.
On top of that, more people will be able to get Welcome Home Loans, which means they can buy a house with a smaller deposit–normally it’s only 10 percent. Christchurch City and Selwyn District house price limits for HomeStart and Welcome Home Loans will be $450,000. The National-led Government also announced it is developing special legislation for a new housing development on Yaldhurst and Steadmans Roads in Riccarton that will see 600 new homes built. Paid parental leave has also increased from 14 weeks to 16 weeks and will increase again to 18 weeks on 1 April, 2016. Parental tax credits for lower income families have gone from a maximum of $150 a week to $220 a week and been extended from eight to 10 weeks. The adult minimum wage has also increased by 3.5 percent – up from $14.25 to $14.75 an hour. This increase strikes the right balance between supporting our lowest-paid workers and ensuring that wages are affordable for small businesses. Since National came into government, the minimum wage has increased by $2.50 an hour- or 17 percent. Benefit and superannuation payments to more than one million New Zealanders have also been increased. From July 1, funding for free doctor’s visits and prescriptions for children will be extended from under-sixes to those under 13. More than 400,000 young Kiwis will benefit from this investment. Compared to other developed countries, New Zealand’s economy is doing well with one of the fastest growth rates. There are 80,000 more people employed than there were last year, and wages are rising faster than the rate of inflation. Families are also benefiting from lower price increases and a long period of stable, low interest rates. The National-led Government remains focused on working hard to help New Zealanders and their families get ahead and I look forward to keeping you updated on our progress.
This is a dilemma that many companies senior management teams face and the following suggestions may assist. It is only experience that can bring these new managers' skills to life and be meaningful. Here are some tips to assist you with your next managers. Firstly, set meaningful objectives and goals. Goals should be SMART, (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely). Goals will clarify the direction and what is expected to be accomplished. Goals should be linked to your strategic plan. Practice modelling. Model the behaviours required by setting an example with your own behaviour. There is a theory called operant conditioning and this relates to a concept of consequence. The probability that a person performs in a certain way is a function of previous consequences. From this we can see that responses following desired behaviours will occur more and responses followed by undesirable consequence will be less. Be an encourager and motivator. Positively reinforce good behaviours. Examples of positive reinforcement are praise and recognition. By contrast, negative reinforcement is often seen as punishment. Management is not an easy task and it is expected those in management positions can deliver on a number of skills or competencies. These include: organising, time management, problem solving, decision making, mentoring and motivation, goal setting, effective listening, conflict management, selfcontrol and communication.
When things look cheap it’s usually because the economic climate looks dicey and there are many things that could go wrong, like in 2008.
Doing nothing doesn’t make complete sense either. I’ve seen plenty of investors sit on the sidelines waiting for the perfect time to invest, when all of the risks subside and prices look more reasonable. Those stars rarely align and those investors often remain permanently on the sidelines, avoiding most of the risks but also most of the returns. One of the most sensible ways to approach this conundrum is to simply invest your lump sum in installments, rather than all at once. By splitting your capital into several pieces and investing it over the course of a year, or even longer, you reduce a lot of the market timing risk. Markets tend to rise over the long term, but along the way they move in cycles, rising and falling as the economy and investor confidence ebbs and flows. You’ll end up buying some assets at high prices, but also some at much better prices. Don’t be afraid to hold a little more cash than usual as you get set. The four percent bank term deposit rate isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible either, especially when you consider where inflation is. As a tradesperson in an unprecedented build environment, there are multiple challenges. I have been working with numerous clients, helping them move away from tenders and into negotiated contracts. This allows them to have greater control over the work, often deliver greater quality and it removes a whole heap of uncertainties. Simon Construction director Izaac Simon knows firsthand that working under a negotiated contract removes a lot of risk for both the builder and the client. “When you go in with a tender, you have to account for all unknowns, so you factor them in, then you have to consider escalation, the availability of subbies who often bump their prices up due to demand, thus the price is front-loaded to deal with situations you don’t even know if you will have to manage.” Izaac says when pricing a negotiated contract, you don’t need to cater for all contingencies, so the client is not having to pay big premiums for unknowns. “You get paid for what you do and then deal with each unforeseen issue as it comes up via a variation.” I have seen many projects stall in the pricing stage because no one holds the all-powerful crystal ball. I advise clients to use and strengthen their trade relationships. If a builder can get involved in a project right from the beginning, they can have input into pre-construction planning which can return savings. Then throughout the negotiated contact, any issues can be dealt with in a factual way, in good faith and ensuring the best outcomes are achieved for everyone. Most importantly, the builder needs to know each sub-trade will do its part of the job properly and on time. A negotiated contract is harder to mange but, in many cases, it is the superior business model in this current climate. With many companies buying contracts, those wanting a future that extends well beyond the rebuild, then it is working relationships, trust and integrity in the marketplace now that will help that happen. With negotiated contracts, there is 100 percent clarity and communication. The key piece of advice in all this, is know your numbers. You must know what your margins are, you must learn from back costing and effective, transparent working records are mandatory. You also need to know what future work is in the pipeline, make sure you do not over commit and that your supporting trades are in that same position.

Too many questions - Forms are not exciting to complete; they are a chore, so make that chore as painless as possible. Too many questions just get boring! Hard to answer questions - Give some help as to what information is being asked for by adding a tip/help tool next to the question. Length of fields - Not providing enough space for an answer is a no-no. I often come across name fields that assume all users have short surnames. Errors when submitting the form - The form has been completed but it just won’t send. There is nothing more frustrating than completing a lengthy form only for there to be a submission error. Regularly test all of your forms to make sure they work. Error messages - We have all experienced an error message that says ‘You must fill out all of the required fields’ but you don’t know what fields they are referring to. Make it clear which fields are required/compulsory. Error messages should ideally show as soon as the error has occurred. Don’t wait for the user to complete the form and then advise of errors. Success message - When forms are submitted it is important to provide an onscreen or email/text notification. Form response - If you have an enquiry form or a quote request form on your website then make sure those requests are not ignored. Form validation - Validating that you are a real person is a fairly standard request these days on forms. If you are asking a user to read distorted text and type in a specific area, make sure it is readable or at least give users the option of seeing an alternative captcha code to read. Why don’t you go to your website now and test those forms?
An important point to remember is that once you find a process that works, any success is likely to be short lived unless it can be repeated again and again. Systems, including a culture of accountability, make it possible for everyone in an organisation to repeatedly implement a winning formula (and hopefully improve on it too!). If a success cannot be repeated, then it’s not properly systemised. Without a system, future efforts to achieve the same success are likely to mean duplication of effort and poor use of resources, including human resources; i.e. staff burnout. One of my favourite role models is Southwest Airlines. Study the success recipe Southwest use and you’ll notice two important underlying ingredients: a culture of fun, and a culture that’s evolved as a result of systematically and continually implementing new and better ways to do things throughout the business. Another great example of SEXing up a business is Dell Computers. According to Michael Dell himself, from the outset, he continually asked “What’s the most efficient way to accomplish this task?” The sales force had to set up their own computers rather than simply requesting one from tech support. This gave them and the Dell management team a real sense of what a customer would need to go through to set up their own PC system. In both cases, the proven benefits of Systemically Executing Xcellence in their organisations translated to peak performing teams and a strong bottom line. For a 20+ year period leading up to 1996, Southwest was the only airline in the United States to report an unbroken record of continuous profits. Considering the industry type and the economic conditions during this period, that’s a truly remarkable record. Dell started his business from a college dorm in 1983 with $1,000 of capital. By 1999, it was an $18 billion company, the second-largest manufacturer and marketer of computers in the world. And in 2015, both companies continue to lead the way in their respective fields with cultures of wellbeing and sustained systemised success. Now that’s sexy!

Of course we are talking about the new Child Support laws that changed on the 1st April, 2015. It would be fair to say there has been a lot of phone calls and checking going on since they were introduced. Child support, at heart, is designed to help provide for children when their parents don’t live together and it’s been in existence for about 20 years with no significant changes across that time. It was touted the overhaul was to better reflect family life today. The sweeping changes are an attempt to break away from the old “one size fits all” methodology and so now both parents' incomes and circumstances are taken into account. The child support system looks after an estimated 200,000 children. The new rules take into account both mum and dad’s income (after allowing for personal living costs), the amount of time the child(ren) spend at each parent’s home and the child’s age. The new rules recognise that teenagers cost more (no surprises there!). The personal living costs allowance does take into account other children living with them. The new rules even allow for non-parent carers to apply for child support where the child lives with neither parent (e.g. grandparents). Like anything IRD related, if your circumstances change, then you need to keep them advised; they’re not mind readers. You can even keep track of your child support payments online now and stay abreast of how much you’ll need to pay or receive using the new formula on the IRD website: www.ird.govt.nz/childsupport Do you need an accountant to help you? Probably not, but if you are self-employed and have multiple income streams, then things can get a bit challenging to calculate and it certainly pays to do it once and do it right. It’s fair to say we have seen a lot of very surprised parents, on both sides of the fence. Some pleasantly surprised and others shocked. The most common surprise we have noticed is where less is payable because the other parent’s income is now being brought to account. Is the new system fair? Well that would be a personal rather than professional opinion, but suffice to say it appears well thought out and more equitable between the two parents, and after 20 years the system needed a good thorough shake-up. So it’s not a sex tax, but rather a system of helping raise children where the parents live apart.

Travelling in and around Christchurch as I do on a daily basis, it’s wonderful to see measurable progress being made in the central city rebuild. While this is exciting, I can’t but fail to see the vast amount of concrete, glass and steel in use, and very often, new buildings with walls of glass on two, and even three sides. Why is this of concern? Well, essentially for me it comes down to caring about health and sustainability. Even though glass buildings can look amazing, very often the reality is that glass has been chosen as the cheapest ‘building’ option. However, unless constructed with a green approach, glass buildings can prove costly, even if not at the build stage. In truth, the people who end up paying more in the long run are the business tenants and the people working there. The workers who struggle to cope with heat and lighting issues and the business owners and shareholders, who not only pay for increased energy bills, but perhaps even more importantly, suffer the cost of reduced productivity and increased absenteeism among their staff as a result. Why? An issue I commonly come across in the course of my work in these beautiful glass buildings is ‘fry’ or ‘freeze’. People working close to the glass struggle to control the light – the glare on their screens or the glare from roofs and ceilings in adjacent buildings - which makes it impossible to see what they’re working on at certain times of day, while they ‘fry’ in the sun. Meanwhile, the people on the other side of the building often freeze as air conditioning systems pump out cool air to chill those over on the hot side. However, some glass buildings work well. The twin skin glass facade building constructed in Auckland for Sampson Corporation in 2012 has a 6 Green Star Office Design rating, (the highest achievable level from the NZ Green Building Council) and is definitely a shining light when it comes to building healthy communities. If you are still in the planning stages, or involved in the design or construction of new commercial spaces, think about those end users and longer term tenants. Keeping the costs down for the long term and keeping the environment in a better place than where we started has to be good for yourself, our businesses and the community at large.

Many people talk about the next big thing and although craft beer is regarded by many as mainstream these days, Blenheim boy Josh Scott knew he was onto something when he had his eyes opened to a world of full flavoured, quality beers during an OE to Europe and the US in his late teens.

The son of Allan Scott of Allan Scott Wines, his refined tasting palate blossomed like a fine wine and now stands as a pioneer in the craft beer movement in New Zealand. Being a successful entrepreneur, qualified winemaker and a Cicerone is thirsty work for Marlborough’s Moa Beer founder.
Homeland Josh used his father’s old shed located at the back of the famous Marlborough vineyard to brew his very first beers and suffice to say, his batch of home brew didn’t exactly taste like the award winning craft beer you savour today. A Christ’s College boy, Josh left school and completed a Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. A stint in Loire, France and Napa Valley, California soon followed, where he absorbed all the knowledge he could in winemaking. It was during these stints that Josh discovered a new world of beers – the traditional European classic brews, and the modern “new world craft beer” brews in the US.

To call or not to call… that is the question By Davina Richards
Technology is a beautiful thing. It enables us to communicate to one another in a variety of ways, from text messaging, Skype, emails, to social networking and telephone calls. No matter where in the world we are we can obtain information fast, efficiently and instantly.
• It’s all on record. Working with email means you can search, review and refresh your memory at any point
Communication is the currency of the world, so when our home life or working life depends on getting information on a daily basis to keep things moving forward, do we pick up the phone or write an email? Which is necessary and which is most successful?
• Emails are not necessarily dealt with straight away – they’re easy to send, but also easy to ignore
Some of us dread receiving (or making) phone calls; just the sound of it rings through your entire body and can leave you in a sense of trepidation. Even a withheld number coming through can induce a sense of panic and questioning. Phone calls however, remain the quickest form of two-way communication, allowing the day go a lot smoother so you can get the job done faster. Emails are another quick way of getting hold of information. Although when I say ‘quick’ I mean you can send a direct email in a flash, but getting a response back may take some time; hours, days, weeks, or not at all in some cases. Here’s a run down of the advantages and disadvantages of emails vs. phone calls.
Email pros: • Fast communication • Does not put someone on the spot – who wants to be ambushed when they answer a phone call?

• No awkward silences or interruptions – email possesses this turn-taking nature which is great when you just want to get the information you need and avoid beating around the bush or awkwardness that can be found with phone calls • Flexible – emails mean you can take time to digest information, process a request, plan and get back to someone with a thoughtful response when you have the time • Considered courtesy before giving someone a call – in some cases it’s better to fire an email and then follow up with a phone call.
Email cons:
• Impersonal – you don’t get to know someone on a personal level through email, although depending on the type of work that you do this can sometimes be irrelevant • The written word can be misunderstood and communication can be unclear – written communication is not always understandable. Sometimes you find yourself spending 10 minutes simply trying to decipher someone’s email. It can also be easy to get the wrong end of the stick.
Phone call pros: • Fast – nothing’s faster than picking up the phone and talking directly to the person you need • Personal – phone calls allow personality to shine through and to get a sense of what someone is like. This can be valuable because it is an indicator as to whether you want to do business with them • You may receive more information and insights which may not be shared via email – phone calls allow spontaneous responses unlike a planned email script. You may get more than you bargained for.

Phone call cons: • You can’t review a phone call at a later time – unless you have a recorder on your phone. It’s annoying when you ask yourself “Ok, what did we just talk about?” when you get off the phone • It’s difficult to assign time to receive or dispatch a phone call – having a busy schedule means you can’t always plan when exactly you need to make a phone call or when you’ll have the time to receive a phone call • Interrupts work flow – phone calls can distract you from the real tasks you need to complete. If possible, only answer to select calls which you know are going to be important • Bad connections, background noise and hard to understand accents all make for a bad phone call, which means communication is broken and potentially damaging to the work that needs to be done • Time wasting – sometimes you can’t get down to business without asking the other person how they are before addressing the reason for the call. Small talk is just another mission when you’re working on mission impossible

• You never know if the other person you’re calling is actually available to talk to you. Meaning you either have to call them back at another time or get them to call you instead. This can be frustrating and sometimes it can feel like any time is a bad time to talk • An arranged phone call is scheduled and therefore isn’t over until it’s done – you don’t feel like you can move on with your work until you’ve had that phone call. It hangs over your head until you can get it out of the way • A verbal agreement will have to be written down at some point – a phone call is all well and good when you’re closing a deal, but at the end of the day the deal will need to be written down and emailed to the other party. Obviously there are ups and downs to both emails and phone calls, but understanding your tasks and working out which is more appropriate could save yourself time and in the long run be more successful. For example, if you’re living in different time zones it’s probably best to opt for email, whereas time sensitive matters are best dealt with by phone. If you don’t want to leave a virtual paper trail which reveals the contents of what should have been a private and/or personal conversation, a phone call is your best choice.

We’ve all experienced procrastination at one point or another and we know how crippling it can be. We think we have all the time in the world, but in reality, we don’t. Sometimes the hardest tasks will be lucky to even get a glance.
For many, it seems as if procrastination has become a part of our lifestyle and it doesn’t just affect our working lives, but our personal lives too; going to the gym, going out to the supermarket (or generally just having to leave the house), tidying the house, making a phone call or even reaching out to someone.
And, for a minority of people, we simply just don’t want to do something. Or we don’t care. Or we play the blame game. Chronic procrastination is when we really do need to worry.
Procrastination is a great way, if not the best way, of not getting anything done.
The impact of procrastination
So why do we do it? Putting it bluntly – we make excuses. It doesn’t matter how good your intentions are, or how much self-talking you do, putting things off until the last minute can be the bane of our daily lives. You know that feeling of ‘I’m just not in the mood today’? Well, many of us experience this on a day to day basis, but I don’t see that presentation writing itself, do you? Lack of motivation or inspiration is just one of the things we sit around waiting to happen and, well, it just doesn’t happen. Before you know it your deadline is tomorrow and all of a sudden waiting to be in the right frame of mind is not such a magical moment after all. We’re also pretty good at convincing ourselves that the work won’t take as long to finish as it actually will. So we keep putting it off until the time comes when we actually have to start difficult tasks and you feel like you’ve aged 50 years. Have you been assigned a task that you have absolutely no idea how to approach or don’t understand what needs to be done? Don’t worry, just throw it into the imaginary too hard basket and forget all about it. Here, take this simple and unimportant task to help you pass the time and make yourself feel better about being useful. Sound familiar?
Some people think that the outcome of constant procrastination only affects them alone, but what you need to realise is that actually procrastination can impact others around you too. People rely upon you to get a job done so that they can get on with theirs. If you can’t deliver, there’s growing resentment from others because they depend on you. No one wants to be viewed as an incompetent, unreliable sloth. You can apply the same scenario with friends and family. In effect, social relationships are damaged because you’ve become a burden on others, and yourself in the long run. Procrastination is also known to take its toll on our physical, mental, and emotional well being. When we feel anxious we lose our ability to focus and stress builds up. Stress then leads to more stress and we’re stuck in this unhealthy cycle. In the end we have to fight this backlog of work and stress simultaneously.
Conquering procrastination Plan and prioritise – define your tasks and make a start on the most important, albeit maybe not the most exciting, tasks and move your way down the list to the less important ones. Force start yourself and get the bigger projects done and dusted so you can relax and enjoy the rest of your day. If it helps, draw three columns on a piece of paper and title them ‘urgent’, ‘important’, and ‘can wait’.

Work in time blocks – spend half an hour focussing on your workload without looking at your phone (it would be better to turn your phone to silent), checking emails (unless it is work-related, and no, emails back and forth from colleagues at work doesn’t count), or talking to colleagues in the room. Once you’ve accomplished this, at the end of the half an hour take five minutes to relax and I guess, if you must, check Facebook, LinkedIn etc.
Set yourself a deadline, even if this means a deadline before the actual deadline. Imagine how good you’ll feel knowing you’re well ahead of schedule. Feel accomplished and celebrate your success.
Find yourself twiddling your thumbs? Don’t let boredom get the better of you. Ask your boss for more work to keep you challenged and on top of your game. Sleep - an obvious one, but we don’t always listen to what we preach; get enough sleep so you won’t lose focus and get the best out of your working day. Feel confident and in control of what you’re doing and be positive about getting it done. Go on, treat yourself – if you can establish a certain amount of workload and achieve them within a set time-frame, go ahead and get your coffee, gym or chocolate fix. Mind games – if you’re struggling to make a start on a project, turn your thoughts to celebrating once you’ve finished your task. For example, feel like giving up during a gym session? Imagine yourself tucking into a

Embrace fear – fear is the thief of joy. Instead of pondering about whether or not you can do a job, get out of your comfort zone and shake off mental debates and give yourself a pep talk. By doing this you’re still ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.

How to be a better boss By Laura Baker

We all want to be better at what we do. Being a great boss isn’t complicated, but it does require thought, patience and a bit of heart.
Hold responsibility A business is only as good as its lowest performing employees. Rather than shifting the blame onto your team leaders for poor performing staff, take on the responsibility yourself. Your staff performance, whether it is good or bad, is the measure of your management skill.
There are many businesses out there run by less than great bosses and their management style brings the whole company down. You may even be one of these people yourself, but don’t dispair. No one intends to be a bad boss - they just don’t have the skills and knowledge to help propel themselves from mediocre to amazing. The road to becoming a better boss begins with you. To understand how you can perform better you need to begin by examining and truthfully scrutinising your work. Once you have been honest with yourself, it’s time to put some of these tips into practise and you’ll be well on your well to becoming a better boss.
Face to face Taking time out of your normal schedule to meet and talk with your staff is crucial to becoming a better boss. Regular face to face time with staff is important to form a relationship with them. Let them know you care about who they are and what they think by learning a bit about them and by giving them the chance to be heard directly from the top. Let employees know that management cares and they are not simply another cog in the wheel. If you don’t meet with them frequently they can feel like their job isn’t important.
Equal treatment Treat everyone equally; if individual employees are given special treatment and singled out as the ‘teacher’s pet’ other staff members will quickly feel resentful towards yourself and the particular employee. Management often doesn’t realise when they are giving someone special treatment so make a concise effort to treat everyone the same to avoid any nasty animosity.
Never stop learning Being the boss does not mean you know everything there is to know about the job. So it is vital to stay open to learning whether it is informal learning through listening to colleagues or formal learning at business workshops. Also offer the opportunity of education and training to your staff. This could mean sending them on courses or being the teacher yourself and imparting your own knowledge with them. Set an example by allocating time for your own self development. If you are open to learning new concepts it will help others do the same.

Challenge your staff
Communication
Managers can forget to challenge their employees or fall into the trap of thinking they don’t want to be tested. But the truth is staff want new challenges, they want to learn new skills, explore different areas of their job and have the chance to progress to the next step in their career. If they feel their career path has stagnated they will begin to look elsewhere. So throw them a challenge and give your staff the opportunity to grow.
To be a good leader you must be a good communicator. Keep your staff in the loop by communicating with them on a weekly basis and keep dialogue flowing in both directions by actively searching out their feedback. Staff often have good ideas and solutions to work problems that management don’t think of. Share your thoughts, ideas, decisions and explain the reasoning behind your decisions. It helps your employees to
Praise your people Bosses who micromanage spend a majority of their time correcting staff for small irrelevant slip-ups in the hope it will increase production and eliminate errors. But (surprise, surprise) giving staff a harsh word about every little mistake is not the way to get the best performance out of them. Instead keep your eyes open for staff members doing something right and praise them for it. By putting a positive spin on your staff interactions they will feel more motivated to do a good job.
Realistic expectations Expect of your staff only what you would realistically expect of yourself. When you are piling your staff up with work and deadlines ask yourself ‘would I be happy with this workload for myself?’ Then lead by example by putting the same expectations on yourself. Let them know you are all in the same boat together as a team and everyone is pulling their weight.

Founded in 1996 Urban Evolution has progressed to implement landscape architectural plans and creating original designs. Equipped with its very own nursery, the team can create a spectacular garden plush with plants, shrubs and trees to transform your garden space, as well as enhance the appearance of your home. One of its current and exciting projects the business is proud to be involved with is the Brooklands Playcentre, a community services project which saw the playcentre move out of its red zoned property and relocated to Spencerville. “As the community was all red zoned the play centre lost 70 percent enrolments,” Flora Johnson, project manager of Urban Evolution Ltd says. The Canterbury Playcentre Association does not own the land and was waiting for insurance to come through, if any. However, Urban Evolution managed to obtain a lease, resource and building consent, and lifted the spirits of the community by breathing life into the project through building and landscape. Excavation work began in January. The building was moved on to the back of a huge trailer and transported 4km to Spencerville by New Zealand building removals. Urban Evolution established a new storage shed, deck and roof line, and the all important outdoor plant landscaping.

The landscaping is very different compared to the old site as the view overlooks a big park to the beach and beyond. There are specific zones set out for the new site; the old deck was transformed into a walkway allowing different levels for the site, a bike track with big boulders in the two middle gardens create interest, while a raised wooden walkway winds to the side. A lawn area envelops the sandpit with a wooden seated area and gardens so that parents can be comfortable while watching children. There is a soft fall zone for the swing set. Fruit trees will become a permanent part of the landscape including natives donated from nurseries and a few shrubs saved from the old site. Pebbles were collected from the West Coast and the children and co-ordinators stencilled some of them to place into the concrete patio. This design was made with the kids in mind, but the members also influenced the design, asking for a fun, creative and challenging zone. The playcentre is now a fun and exciting place the whole community can enjoy for years to come. A major player in our rebuild Watts & Hughes Construction is continuing in its efforts to rebuild Christchurch and is currently completing a large $17 million commercial project on Moorhouse Avenue. The project involves the construction of a 9500sqm building for SSF One Limited, called Opus House, which is a five-level office block. Watts & Hughes project manager Paul Murphy says the building required concrete piles of 900mm diameter to be inserted 28m into the ground due to poor ground conditions. “On top of the piles is 900x700mm concrete foundations and then the steel structure with tray deck and concrete floors,” he says. “The building will have a glazed exterior façade with Alucobond panelling. There is no tilt-slab concrete in the building. The seismic bracing system is a viscous damper by Taylor Devices in the US. It’s a typical project in Christchurch at the moment with the steel structure and traydeck floors, but it has a different bracing system.”
Opus House will feature a double lift and a fully sprinkler fire protection system. Watts & Hughes began the project in May last year, with all works due for completion by the end of July. “It’s been a challenging and interesting project,” Paul says. “The consultants are Opus International, who are moving into the building.” Watts & Hughes has a site manager for the project, with most trades subcontracted by the company. Chapman Engineering has done the structural steel work, Texco Group did the piling, and Nelson Stud Welders did the tray deck. Other companies involved include Beattie Group, All About Plumbing and Triangle Fire Protection.
Watts & Hughes rebuilding Christchurch Watts & Hughes has been operating in Christchurch for four years and has repaired and rebuilt hundreds of homes in that time, as well as constructing and repairing many significant commercial buildings within the city. The 30 year-old company was established in Auckland in 1984 and Tauranga in 2004 and today has operations in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Wellington and Christchurch. Adding colour, character and texture to any surface What do multi-hued mosaics, large format hardwoods, brick feature walls, geometric shapes and coloured splashbacks all have in common? They represent some of the latest tiles and tiling trends being showcased at the recently repaired Brymac Tiles store at 42 Durham Street, Sydenham. “Colours, shapes and textures add interest to a space and we’re seeing modern takes on some of the more traditional designs coming through,” Brymac Tiles managing director James Thomson says. “Shapes like octagons, hexagons and rhombus add a twist to the more traditional rectangles and squares. Further we are seeing increased demand in large format and timber look tiles.” 1.7m long timber look ceramic tiles feature in James’ own family home and, with three children under five, they offer the natural look of wood, with the easy maintenance that comes with tiles. They’re opening up a wider range of design possibilities, particularly in wet areas such as showers, where traditionally a wood look wasn’t possible. “Large format tiles are extremely popular right now, with popular sizes 600 x 600, 800 x 800 right up to three metres in length,” James says. “There are new designs and sizes that simply weren’t in the market even as little as three months ago.”
James Thomson believes the New Zealand tile market used to be five years behind Europe’s trends. “We’re now on par,” James says, crediting the change with the inspiration of shows like ‘The Block’, ‘Our Home’ and the 24/7 availability of information via social media and the internet. Brymac Tiles continues to make local access to the hottest tile trends hitting Europe easier than ever before. James gets to travel overseas regularly to keep up to date, but also enjoys frequent visits from factory sales representatives to ensure no gaps are missed. Whyte Construction carried out the earthquake repairs on the Wordsworth Street showroom, stripping out and replacing the concrete flooring. “Scott Fairburn from Whyte Construction has been great to deal with,” James says. Visa Global Logistics provides the tiling firm’s international freight forwarding services, handling overseas shipments from the factory, through customs clearance, devanning and also look after the offsite logistics and daily stock runs from the offsite storage facility to the store. Mapei New Zealand is one of Brymac’s two biggest consumable suppliers, Mapei provide adhesives, primers, silicones, waterproofing and decoupling mats. “They have a Christchurch based consultant available for advice and specifications on projects, which is extremely helpful,” James says.
“The Wigram Airforce Museum is a good example of Brymac Tiles supplying and laying tiles, partnered with Mapei in using a system specially designed for purpose.” Commercial Signs is Brymac’s commercial signwriter and the firm has dealt with Tony for years. “He provided the original signwriting for the building and has provided his services again since our repairs.” Brymac purchases its onsite vehicles from a Sydenham based dealership Wheeler Motors and James says the service is fantastic. From Russia with love The ambitious dream to create world-class sporting facilities on the edge of Christchurch is taking shape at a rapid pace. It takes passion, a driving vision, a truck load of determination and a whole lot of Russian tenacity to make anything happen. But making things happen is exactly what Christchurch-based Russian businessman Slava Meyn has done. From a bare 20-hectare site in Yaldhurst, the beginnings of his vision for the Christchurch Sports Centre and International Sports Academy is taking shape. The first part of this ultramodern, youth focused, multi-sports hub is creating two full sized playing fields for the Christchurch Football Academy (CFA).
The Academy is a charitable organisation passionate about raising the profile of football (soccer in Kiwi speak) among our region’s youth and with the new facilities, it will enable children to participate in football for all year round. The first half of stage one of the ambitious project is now a reality as two full-sized synthetic turf fields, complete with stands, flood lighting and road infrastructure, are about to open, providing a superior, all-weather playing surface. It is the most technologically advanced artificial grass playing surface installed in New Zealand and will be FIFA two stars certified.
By early 2016, the accompanying clubrooms are expected to open. Beyond this, Slava, an astute and accomplished businessman, is looking for direct investment, partnerships, joint ventures, sponsors and associations that will join the team to develop other facilities on site. “We have placed the foundations and started to create a world-class facility, our desire now is to deliver exactly what people in Christchurch want and need,” Slava comments.

While the anchor tenant of the Sports Centre is the CFA, the concept is to see many sports codes, businesses and organisations utilise the space - how that looks is dependent on who comes forward to play a role in the development. To date interest is high and negotiations are underway with numerous parties who are related to, or have an interest in, youth or the sports industry.

He is now actively seeking joint venture partners, possibly the Christchurch City Council, government agencies and Canterbury sports and educational organisations, to help fund the facility going forward. The next defined stage of the development will include another pitch, this time a sand-based natural turf playing field, a grandstand, four synthetic mini-pitches, and a clubhouse with six changing rooms, café and office area. A preliminary design has been prepared for further developments including a gymnastics facility of up to 5,000 square metres, a six or eight-lane, 50 metre swimming pool, complete with seating for 800-odd spectators. The proposed third stage includes a $7m aquatic complex, plus fields for a variety of codes. He would like to see an eight lane, 50 metre, international standard pool for swimmers to train, complete with seating for some 800 spectators. He has had expressions of interest from Canterbury water polo officials. Another stage features an indoor multi-sports centre with numerous courts for use across various sporting codes. Add in a gym studio, yoga and Pilates studio and sports rehabilitation facilities, a cafe and meeting rooms, and you start to see the scale of Slava’s dream. “All dreams start with an idea, and I know this can all happen.”

He is now encouraging business, potential sponsors or clubs that might want to hire, sponsor or develop facilities to get in touch. He envisages having spaces corporate groups can hire and wants to enter into sponsorship discussions with businesses who want to support and encourage sport in the community. “While the Sports Centre will have a major focus on encouraging young people to be actively involved in sport, there will be dedicated facilities for adult users. For example, it is envisioned a series of mini pitches with an attached social area, BBQs, access to a cafe/bar and change rooms will be dedicated to adult groups wanting to play social sport be it clubs or corporate competitions. “We need a cafe operator to come in, and there will be spaces for other services in and around sport - so come talk to us,” he urges. “We want to work with anyone who has a business based > around kids or sport.

For the love of football Slava’s motivation for the project is his love of football. And he’s not alone - his entire family is passionate about sports. The Meyn family relocated to Christchurch in 2009 and both he and his wife are active in sports, as are his three children. “When I arrived here six years ago, it was a surprise for me that kids didn’t play football all year round.” Slava set about establishing the Academy, with the plans for the Sports Centre hot on its heels. He recruited former Canterbury United assistant coach, Bulgarian Tsetso Ivanov, as coaching director. Together they have grown a passion to get kids playing football into a reality that will soon have its home on one of the best training centers in New Zealand. They want to encourage more kids into football and with New Zealand’s hosting rights to the FIFA Under 20 World Cup next month, they believe this will help to raise the profile of the sport. Internationally, football has some major idols: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar
Jr. Part of his vision for the Academy is to ignite a fire in young New Zealanders and train international standard footballers. “Kids want something to look up to, so let’s start building a future generation of football superstars right here in Christchurch,” Tsetso says. Today he supports Barcelona and Zenit Petersburg, whose star player Viktor Fayzulin hails from Slava’s home town of Nakhodka, near Vladivostok.

International qualifications benefiting Canterbury children Tsetso, an internationally certificated and qualified coach, has dedicated his career (and life) to football. He left a major European university with a double major in PE coaching and sports culture (football) and had already made the decision that he wanted to work with young people coaching and developing worldclass football players. “The new football centre and Christchurch Football Academy has enormous potential. The Academy will cater for players aged four to 18, with the ultimate aim of training elite players capable of going on to professional careers.” Tsetso stresses the Academy is not about exclusivity but total inclusiveness. “We are here to cater to all recreational players keen to improve their skills through quality training. We are building world-class professional pitches and facilities but there is no limitation to who can join us.” For the last season CFA has been operating five and seven-aside tournaments for children from the age of four years upwards. Part of the Academy’s culture that is already reaping rewards is children arriving half an hour before formal coaching begins - this time spent in the changing rooms is about building a bond, getting to know your team mates and then getting focused, so by the time the kids hit the field, they are ready to focus and concentrate on learning. “We are delivering the total playing experience and in this first half hour our coaches are setting expectations so the kids know what is going to happen next. It’s about preparing them for the game in every way and instilling discipline.”

Part of the process is educating parents on how they can encourage their child off the field and how to avoid the typical “Kiwi sideline coach” syndrome. “As professional coaches we need to have the children’s 100 percent attention. It is only when we have it that we can give them the very best coaching and encouragement.”
Non- competition The academy could work within the New Zealand football structure. There have been discussions with Mainland Football and many other organisations about the potential for joint ventures. “I don’t want the Academy to be in competition with other football clubs, we want to work with them. Our football centre will be open for everyone who wants to play football.” The opening of the two full sized synthetic turf fields in the next month means playing football all year round in Christchurch will be a reality. Add in the sophisticated lighting and the playing fields become a multi-use space that can be used day and night, > 365 days of the year.

The successful, Christchurch based businessman moved to New Zealand in 2009 and from here the Russian philanthropist maintains his position as a major shareholder in Ratimir, one of the largest meat processors in Russia’s far-east region. As a sporting family, the Meyn’s were frustrated at the lack of football facilities in Christchurch, therefore Slava established the Christchurch Football Academy.
Football and children are his passion. Ricardo is a qualified pre-school teacher and is honoured to be coaching the youngest children at the Academy. He moved to New Zealand 13 years ago and has played as much football as he possibly could. Growing up in Uruguay, Ricardo played every day. Recently, Ricardo completed the Youth Level 3 coaching qualification with New Zealand Football. His goals are to keep growing as a coach and to keep developing better football players. Ricardo coaches children across all grades, including 11th Grade Gold Team.
Contributing to the rebuild of Christchurch is important to Slava and this acts as the motivation to start work on multi-million dollar state-of-the-art sporting facility in Yaldhurst. It’s designed to introduce to New Zealand the best world practices and technologies for high quality training and the playing of sport in a safe and inspired environment. It’s his passion for football and dedication to seeing young people participating in sport that fuels his drive to invest in and establish this purpose built sporting facility.

Christchurch Football Academy Tsetso Ivanov - coaching director As a coach who has obtained a ‘A’ class UEFA licence (Union of European Football Associations), Tsetso is internationally trained and qualified to the highest standards. His passion is coaching children and nurturing talent. He moved to New Zealand in 2006 and has worked in various football coaching positions since. He continues to study under top conditioning expert Raymond Verheijen, and is dedicated to making world class coaching available to Kiwi kids. As well as developing a football curriculum for use in New Zealand schools and overseeing all coaching activity with the CFA, he is also active on the football pitch, coaching children across all grades.
Mike Killick is the managing director of Deep South Ice Cream, one of New Zealand’s leading manufacturers and exporters of premium ice cream. Mike has a long involvement in New Zealand football as a player, coach and governor of the game in his role as the deputy-chair of Mainland Football.

Kathryn Mason Teaching is in her blood. Kathryn holds a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning and works in a Christchurch intermediate school. She is also the assistant coach with the Universities Women’s Premier League Team. She recently completed the Youth Level 3 coaching qualification with New Zealand Football. Growing talent in Canterbury While the Christchurch Football Academy is all-inclusive and aims to get anyone interested playing football, Tsetso says it’s also about nurturing talent to ultimately move players into professional leagues. “What we need to do is not only find the talent, but grow it. “The two synthetic fields and an 11-month playing season are the first steps. I don’t believe this facility is only going to make the players. You also need great coaches and wellstructured programmes.” Both of which the Academy are delivering. Establishing football curriculums, not just for use within the Academy, but also across schools is well underway. A Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed with Rangi Ruru Girls' School and Christ's College for the Academy to develop a programme that will become part of the schools' curriculum for the teaching of football. It is anticipated this will soon be rolled out to more schools. “We are taking a holistic approach to football as we want to see the game grow here.” In the Mainland Football Club catchment area, the two organisations are working together with the schools to promote the game.
Taking football into schools For nearly a year, the Academy has been taking the game into schools - a move that has proved exceptionally popular. While it has seen some quality coaching taken directly to the players, it is also adding an element of fun with it inflatable football pitch. More than 5,000 primary children have interacted with the Academy and while this is in part a promotion, it’s also about raising enjoyment of the game in general – but mostly it’s about spotting talent. And they have, in

particular, Tsetso mentions an 11-year-old girl who he believes will one day play for New Zealand. The Academy is working with her parents to nurture this talent.
Football is now the number one team sport played by Kiwi kids. In 2012, Sport New Zealand announced that football had overtaken rugby as the sport of choice. Kicking the round ball was the most popular team sport, eclipsing rugby across all age groups and both genders. Part of developing a more inclusive and available playing opportunity, Slava says the Academy will make its facilities accessible to footballers from all clubs around the region. “We want to hold regular tournaments at the site for a variety of different age groups.” Attracting club teams from other countries to Christchurch was another goal. “We also want our fields to be used by other sports and clubs and we want to foster these relationships and see this whole facility being used all the time by as many codes > as possible.

Slava spent considerable time and resources researching the types of pitches used internationally. He subsequently contracted Quad4 Ltd, the national distributor for FieldTurf in New Zealand, to do the work. The globally patented, FieldTurf system is used on top sports fields the world over - from football to baseball. National sales director Shane Page says FieldTurf fields have hosted The Super Bowl, BCS National Championship Games, World Cup matches, the World Series, and the World Baseball Classic. Slava wanted a field that can be played on year round - FieldTurf is delivering that. “This surface will eliminate ground closures and players will no longer be running around on sodden winter pitches. “Once it opens, it can never be closed, except for snow,” Shane adds.

It will be the best playing field in New Zealand. While the Ole Academy in Wellington has very similar turf, it does not feature the cork layer of the Christchurch field. The cork top layer keeps the surface temperature cool. “The cork takes the heat and distributes it, helping to keep the field cooler than other traditional systems on the market. “Our company has worked closely with athletes, former players, coaches, trainers and doctors, and development included years of trials, tests, samples, equipment innovations and advanced formulas – all with the goal of developing an artificial turf system that combines the performance properties of natural grass with the benefits of a synthetic solution,” Shane adds. “The difference is players will feel safe. The field will feel comfortable and they’ll have less soft tissue injuries because of it.”

Print perfection It’s never an easy feat standing out in a crowded marketplace, yet for local Christchurch entrepreneur Ashley Horton, the ability to stand out is only surpassed by the ability to grow and evolve to keep up with the ever-changing needs of a rapidly evolving industry. The man behind local printing firm Printable Solutions was just 19 when he started the company with little more than energy and a vision. Twelve years later that vision is going nationwide. “This is just the first of a long line of Printable Solutions franchises in our future,” Ashley says. “We’re giving the company steroids and we’ve got big plans for 30 more of these around the country, so we’re on the lookout for franchise partners.” They’re big words, but Ashley has a habit of delivering. While his foray into the world of business started with knocking on doors wearing a suit that didn’t fit, trousers that didn’t match and carrying a briefcase full of business card samples to convince business owners to put their trust in him, the result has been phenomenal. Industrial welding supplies Christchurch welding supply company Weld Worx has been meeting the needs of workshops that are small in stature, through to some of the region’s largest industrial engineers, for more than 12 years, and this also includes home and farm workshops. The showroom at 29 Carlyle Street has an extensive range of products to choose from, including welding equipment, plasma, safety equipment, power tools and specialist welding related items. “Initially in 2002 when we started, we had companies approaching us when they heard we were going to go out and do this on our own. We took those opportunities and have developed long lasting and mutually beneficial relationships throughout the years,” Darryl says. “One of the key factors in our success has been the generous support from our suppliers, and knowing we can go back to them if we have any issues has been a big advantage over the years.” Two years ago the firm became an outlet for ownership compressed gas cylinders including Oxygen, Acetylene, Argon, Argoshield, CO2 and Nitrogen gases for welding and cutting. “This has been tremendously successful for us,” Darryl
says. “The uptake in Canterbury has been phenomenal. Gas companies have traditionally charged a cylinder rental fee. Companies and individuals can now purchase their cylinders outright and upon return can swap their empty cylinders for a full one, saving on those dreaded rental fees.” Moving forward Weld Worx plans to increase the range further, and through a strong relationship with global manufacturers, the company is looking to strengthen its position in other areas such as CNC operated machines for plasma, laser and water jet cutting. “Having installed several CNC operated automated Plasma cutting systems already in Canterbury, we believe this is an area which needs to be developed further in New Zealand and we’re looking to assist in that process. “Traditionally these products have been seen as high value luxury items only accessible to large steel merchants. In recent years these products
have become more affordable and as a result more workshops are in a position to install them to lessen their production times and costs. “We plan to install a fully optioned CNC Plasma machine in our own warehouse in the coming months to provide practical demonstrations for anyone around the country who is considering installing CNC in their own workshop. To my knowledge this may be the only such dealer installation in New Zealand for that purpose.” Due for completion shortly will be a welding booth for customer demonstrations showcasing the latest in powered fume extraction, something which is gaining strong interest in many workshops. Although Weld Worx started from humble beginnings, by continuing to deliver solutions to customers, while exceeding their expectations in quality, service and value, the company has continued to grow and adapt.
The new Carlyle Street premise is just further recognition of the value that the local and nationwide customer base sees in their offering. “We started in 2002 operating from a double garage and a spare bedroom, growing rapidly, before it was taking up whole house,” Darryl says. “This is our third and final location. Rolleston’s newest school looks to the future The Rolleston community now has another choice in education for its children, following the opening of the brand new Rolleston Christian School.
The long term plans for the school are to cater to children up to year 10, which would involve the construction of a third stage. However, Mark says this could be 10-15 years away. “We believe 5-15 percent of the population could be interested in sending their kids to a Christian school. We did the numbers out in Rolleston 5-10 years ago when the Ministry said the town was going to grow really fast. Then the earthquakes have added to that,” Mark says.
The school opened its doors to its first intake of students in February and is being well received by the children and their parents.
“We had hoped to be nearer to 100 students by now. We’re growing from the bottom up so we’re getting a lot of interest from parents of five year olds.”
Christian Schools Trust chief executive Mark Larson, who is also the chairman of the school’s establishment board of trustees, is duly excited about the future of the new school. Rolleston Christian School is a state-integrated school with a special character for children in years one to six. The land and buildings at 571 Springston-Rolleston Road are privately owned by the trust, while the Ministry of Education funds the running of the school. Construction of the new school started last June and was completed in February. “We have 50 children at the moment, with room for a maximum roll of 300,” Mark says. “We’re built for 150 students in stage one and then we’ll build stage two, which is for the next 150. It depends on how the roll grows, but it’s probably 3-5 years away.”

Smooth construction process The Christian Schools Trust and establishment board of trustees put a large amount of thought into the design of the school and what teaching and learning styles they wanted to achieve. “We have open spaces and collaborative teaching styles, as well as IT and digital learning,” Mark says. The Rolleston Christian School has six classrooms that can be kept separate or opened up for collaborative teaching. Mark says everyone involved in the school is extremely pleased with the design and construction of the new school. The school is led by principal Liz Horn, with all > teachers required to be Christians.

The construction of the new Rolleston Christian School was a huge success for Signal Management Group, which acted as project and construction manager. Signal Management Group does a lot of work within the education sector and has considerable experience building schools. Director and project manager, Stuart Anderson says Signal managed the master planning, design and construction of the new integrated Christian school in Rolleston. It carried out an initial site master planning process, which required the engagement and management of a range of design and specialist technical consultants. It involved the resolution of a range of land acquisition, infrastructure capacity, operational and traffic/noise/landscape design issues associated with the development of the green-fields site. The construction of stage 1 involved the provision of classroom, administrative and infrastructure and amenity facilities for 150 year 1-6 students. It required innovative, fast-track design and construction strategies. A key element of the school’s special character is reflected in the design of the classroom blocks, which embrace an open-learning
environment. “It was a nice project on a greenfields site, but the big challenge was the tight timeframe,” says Stuart. “Another challenge was that there wasn’t a great deal of infrastructure to start with; we did the electricity, water, drainage, car parking and administrative building. Aneil says Service Foods’ proactive and competitive operation has ensured its success will be ongoing, with the company covering Auckland, the Waikato and Canterbury by truck and other regions by freight. “Our stability and the energy within our team have enabled us to cement our position in the market and propel us forward. We have grown from five staff to 260 now, with the key growth concentrated in the last 10 years.” Being successful in business is all about communication and, with this, establishing and maintaining working relationships with both suppliers and clients alike. “Our strong relationships with our suppliers and clients has played an extremely important role in our success,” he says.
