TPP delivers a vital economic injection

As a small country relying on exports, New Zealand can’t get rich selling things to ourselves.

That’s why the 800 million customers in the recently completed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement will make all the difference.

Successive New Zealand governments have sought free trade agreements with the United States and Japan – the world’s largest and third largest economies – for the past 25 years. That’s just become a reality with the TPP. TPP is New Zealand’s biggest ever trade deal and will deliver significant benefits to our country. It involves 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, which together account for 36 percent of the world’s economy, and is a very positive agreement for New Zealand. It will allow Kiwi exporters to sell more products and services to the world, and support more jobs and higher incomes back in New Zealand.

Our economy is estimated to benefit by at least $2.7 billion a year by 2030, and it will save Kiwi exporters $259 million a year in tariffs. The agreement eliminates tariffs on 93 percent of New Zealand exports to the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico and Peru.

Just last year, $28 billion worth of New Zealand goods and services were exported to the other countries in TPP, which is around 40 percent of our total exports.

With TPP, New Zealand now has Free Trade Agreements with our top five trading partners: Australia, China, the United States, Korea and Japan. Not being in the TPP would put the New Zealand economy and our businesses at a competitive disadvantage compared to other countries.

Along with the recently completed TPP negotiations, it’s been a busy time for the National-led Government. It’s now been more than a year since the 2014 General Election, and we are continuing to deliver on our commitment to help New Zealanders and their families get ahead.

The Christchurch rebuild also continues at pace. More than 20 Anchor Projects are now underway, and we’ve seen 10.6 percent economic growth in Canterbury – more than in any other region.

Over 67,000 Canterbury homes have now been repaired and 15,800 jobs were created in the region in the past year. We remain committed to making Christchurch an even better place to live, work and raise a family.

We are spending more than ever before in health and education, our economy continues to grow and we’ve seen 49,000 new jobs created in the nine months to June 2015.

The National-led Government will continue to work hard to build a stronger, more prosperous New Zealand, with more jobs and higher incomes, and more opportunities for families to get ahead.

When sales slump, companies need to concentrate on becoming even more sales process focused.

The very notion that questions may be more valuable to a business than answers almost seems counterintuitive.

Firstly let me state that most slumps are statistically normal and often can lead to new opportunities. Being positive and having a fresh approach can assist greatly.

But asking questions for questions sake isn’t the way forward though. Questions need to be bold and business leaders need to launch boldly into this arena. The risk in small minded questions is that they are linked to efficiency (doing things right), rather than those more bold questions which target effectiveness (doing the right things).

Long term, the best outcomes will be achieved by making your company a sales focused organisation.

You can only develop so much new product, produce so many units, set up so many systems - but at the end of the day you need sales. Sales will define your success or failure. Work toward creating a culture of “sales focus” and being totally supportive to your sales functions.

Equip your sales teams with the skills and behaviours to become brilliant at their ability to sell and promote your company products and services. Think about the roles and responsibilities of your sales managers and their teams.

Encourage good sales process through planning, prospecting, conversions and follow ups.

With this whole “doing the right things” mentality then raises a few pertinent core questions that business owners need to be asking themselves of their businesses.

What is your business’ purpose in existing?

What is the outward looking reason why you exist? Where are you from? Where are you going? Are your employees’ core ethos in keeping with the corporate ethos? Big stuff, very fundamental.

Sales managers need skills to be able to produce the results you need in the tough economic situations we face. In the short term the answers for fixing a slump is to increase sales activity levels.

What are you doing that you shouldn’t be?

Too many businesses are focused on finding new things to do.

Instead time is better spent deciding on things that you might need to stop doing. What can you eliminate? By stopping doing something you immediately free up time to do more of the things you need to be doing.

First, consider the sales funnel for your company. Your ratio of prospects to qualified prospects and to conversions are all important. It will probably be around 4:2:1, so for every four prospects you may qualify two and get one new client. It’s a numbers game. How many prospects are your teams finding, qualifying and closing?

If the current business didn’t exist, how would you better build a new one from scratch?

Build the same thing faster and better… we can all learn from this. The challenge in many businesses is the fact they have grown organically and sometimes that means without a plan.

Acquiring new accounts breaks down to a series of numbers and ratios of success. Prospecting is like a huge funnel and the numbers at the top of the funnel represent the number of contacts that you initiate, and the bottom of the funnel (the outflow) represents ultimate sales. The more you put in at the top, the more you achieve at the bottom.

Where is our happy safe place?

Where can we ask the bold and blunt questions without fear of attack or ridicule? Where can hypothetical questions be asked without fear of recrimination. It’s a safe place for outrageous but awesome ideas to be floated, manipulated and then gelled into solid plans.

The objective of prospecting is to get a qualified appointment or be able to transition from a prospecting call into a qualified presentation.

Test, measure and monitor It’s about taking new ideas and experimenting with them. Not boots and all, but rather a planned testing model, a try before you buy mentality in business that ensures continued structural integrity for a business.

But the key to successful selling is successful prospecting.

Unquestionably, the route to an order or new account begins with prospecting. Your skills at prospecting will determine, to a great extent, how successful a salesperson you are. The secret to effective prospecting is to build up a backlog of prospects so abundant that you will never have to worry about where to go or whom to call on.

I encourage you to start this process today. Your sales results will only be ever as good as your ability to prospect.

So if you’re serious about being the best business you can be start with questions, not answers.

Be alive and alert to some “out there” thinking in terms of the answers that do crop up and treat each one with dignity and careful consideration.

There’s a fine line between a whack-job idea and pure genius.

The care into evaluating the answers could be the very difference.

Imagine you’ve had a disagreement with someone you care about. It’s not a terminal disagreement, but it’s uncomfortable enough that both parties can feel the strain on the relationship. (We’ve all been there eh!?)

Not wanting the situation to fester you decide to take a proactive approach to ‘mending’ things and over the course of a short period you: • Deliver some genuine compliments about them to them.

• Offer some help with a task they’re working on or need completed • Send them a gif.

• Invest some quality time with them • Front up to them to shake their hand or give them a big hug.

In doing so, and continuing to do so, evidence appears to suggest you are well on the way to enjoying an effective, lasting and mutually fulfilling relationship. Dr John Gottman’s research into relationships that last the test of time indicates the ratio of ‘positivity to negativity’ is five to one. That’s five positive interactions for every one negative interaction.

Dr Stephen Covey, the author of the best-selling Seven Habits of Highly Effective People placed a lot of importance on the ‘emotional bank account’; the concept being that when we top up each other’s emotional bank accounts (being nice to someone), we invariably build up deposits that we can draw on when we experience a negative moment in our relationships.

So how can you use this knowledge when it comes to improving your business? More easily and powerfully than you might think!

For example, if you were to practice just one ‘positive language’ technique per week with any one stakeholder group; e.g. staff/ associates, you would ‘bank’ over 50 positive interactions with that group over the course of the year.

Extend that to all stakeholder groups; investors, clients, staff, suppliers and the community in which you operate and that’s a lot of positivity swirling around your business.

Developing an awesome business and workplace wellbeing culture requires intentional acts so why not invest some effort into trying to use the five to one ratio and the emotional bank account?

Perhaps practice with friends and family at first and see how your relationships improve at home. If all goes well, as I suspect it will, then apply some creativity to the concepts and roll them out to your marketplace and watch how appreciation and respect manifests itself amongst all your stakeholder groups.

Recent market ructions highlight the value of having some of a portfolio invested outside New Zealand.

During the past six months, to the end of August, New Zealand shares fell 4.3 percent. Global shares fell similarly, declining by 6.9 percent. However, because the New Zealand dollar fell 16.2 percent against the United States dollar over the same period, global shares actually delivered a positive return of 11.1 percent for New Zealand investors.

By itself, a sharp dip in our currency is no reason to suddenly decide to send money overseas. Having an allocation to global assets should be a strategic move that is part of an investor’s long term asset allocation decision.

But we should recognise that our currency can be volatile, and historically tends to decline against the United States dollar during periods of heightened uncertainty, as we have seen in recent months. This means it provides something of a natural ‘airbag’ to portfolios which can help soften volatility in markets.

Many studies have shown that all investors, no matter what country they live in, have a preference for investing in their local markets. This ‘home bias’ is seemingly alive and well in New Zealand. In April we looked at the Reserve Bank household asset statistics and calculated that our collective investment assets across all New Zealand households totalled approximately $478 billion. If we assume that perhaps a third of the 33 percent held in shares and bonds in this ‘portfolio’ are invested in overseas securities, it means we still have only around 10 percent of our total net wealth in global markets.

There is clearly room for more global diversification in our portfolios. We are not saying there is anything wrong with our markets. But investing overseas is about diversifying risk, not seeking higher returns.

Given the small size of our economy and markets, it is prudent to diversify some of our portfolio away from New Zealand.

We should also be mindful of the fact that 44 percent of our inflation is made up of tradeables. In other words, nearly half our costs are imported or priced overseas.

A fall in our currency, all else being equal, means a rise in our living costs in New Zealand dollar terms. In many respects, investing is about matching income and assets against liabilities.

On this basis, it makes sense to hedge some of this potential inflation liability by investing outside New Zealand.

In any business, it’s generally the people who dictate the overall success of the organisation.

Few businesses, even those with a great product offering or digital platform that may not require a lot of people to run, will prosper in a long term without great people.

Teams that work collectively and cohesively create strong and positive cultures - and it’s these cultures that allow for high performance.

High performance doesn’t often self-generate in a business; there are ingredients that must be present to allow it to form.

The key aspects of developing the foundation of a high performance culture, in my opinion, are as follows: Vision: The company must have a clear vision to allow its employees to see its direction and what the company aspires to achieve. A vision needs to be specific and related to the business’ core product or service offering and overall objectives and may also set out what the company will look like in the future.

Values: What underpins a company’s vision is its values.

These provide the framework for the expectations of its staff and their required behaviours. All staff, not only its leaders, need to take a stand for the company values in order to protect the culture of the business.

Recruitment strategy: A well executed recruitment strategy to ensure talent is identified and hired ensures the organisation attracts, retains and nurtures people with the right attributes, attitudes and potential to be moulded into the culture of the business or work group.

Working relationships: It’s important there are sound professional working relationships between team members to allow people to develop the chemistry that sets the foundation for a cohesive work group.

Clear accountabilities and role definition: Employees need clarity and it’s the position description that defines this, while incorporating the accountabilities and role definition, along with key performance metrics, that allow each employee to be measured against success.

A rewards framework: This allows each staff member to be rewarded for achievement and high performance. There are various types of rewards that can motivate the right behaviours both individually and as a team/ group.

Career progression, development and training: This is essential to give employees direction for their career in the organisation, to offer them challenges and to learn and develop their skills. These factors create real engagement if the employee is motivated at developing their career and create longevity in tenure.

Strong and effective leadership: The key element that ensures all of the above are effectively executed and that staff are engaged, gel as a team and work cohesively together.

One of the particularly positive things to come out of the upcoming changes to the Health & Safety legislation is an increased emphasis on ‘health’.

During the years, I have come across many organisations who feel that health is a personal responsibility on the part of their employees; however, experience tells me (and research shows) that there are very tangible gains to be made by encouraging healthy behaviour as an everyday part of best business practice.

After all, who wouldn’t want to see fewer sick days, increased motivation and a great team atmosphere at work?

There are many relatively simple things you can do to create a healthy environment. You may already do some of them, but have a look at these three key aspects to see what else you could do to make a difference: Your working environment • Check that your workspace is set up well for the people working in it. Ensure that there is flexibility to adjust desk height and chair settings for different sizes of people • Are your premises light and airy, with some control on temperature and air flow? If not, consider what you can do to change this. Air quality and temperature make a big difference • If possible provide shower facilities for cyclists or people who want to go out for a run at lunchtime • Make sure there is a water cooler/s available • Provide an inviting, separate staff room or quiet area for people to eat lunch or take a break. If there is nowhere suitable inside, provide a bench somewhere close by outside.

Your organisational culture • Encourage people to leave their desks at lunchtimes • Offer in-office massage, yoga or Pilates classes • Organise team events in your office based around fitness • Provide a fruit bowl rather than a snack box full of biscuits and slices • Offer free eye checks regularly for those staff with high computer screen use.

Actively encourage healthy work practices • Encourage people to have walk and talk meetings • Encourage people to use stairs rather than lifts • Suggest people park further away and walk into the workplace • Encourage people to stand in meetings or when making phone calls • Encourage people to stretch regularly.

As you can see, there are plenty of simple things you can do to make a big difference, both for yourself individually and for your organisation.

Once a decision has been made to start or buy a business, an ownership structure must be chosen.

Your choice has an effect on income streams, asset protection, flexibility, exit from the business and taxation. So let’s look at the common options (I will ignore exotic structures like JVs, Limited Partnerships, Co-operatives, etc): Sole trader This is only an option for individual owners. The business operates under the owner’s IRD number, with profit declared in the owner’s income tax return. From a legal perspective the business and the individual are inseparable, and the owner is liable for all business debts.

A share of the business cannot be sold to another. Joint ownership requires a new structure with new IRD number and tax registrations, and new contracts for supply, employment, sale, etc.

Partnerships A simple partnership is not a legal entity. The partners are jointly liable for all debts of the partnership. The partnership accounts for GST and employment deductions under its own IRD number, but all profits are distributed to the partners and taxed in their returns. The addition of a new partner creates a new partnership, so it is not a flexible ownership model.

Companies This is a separate legal entity creating some separation between business obligations and the shareholders. Companies are owned by shareholders and governed by directors; they are not necessarily the same people. Some creditors (eg: banks) require personal guarantees from the directors and directors can be exposed to some other liabilities.

Company ownership can change easily with the buying and selling of shares, or the issue of new shares. Companies provide the most flexibility with respect to distribution of income, although there are some practical limitations on the utilisation of these income options.

Trusts A Trust holds assets in trust for one or more beneficiaries. The Trust’s affairs are managed by trustees for the benefit of the beneficiaries. Because the trustees have a duty of care to the beneficiaries, it is inadvisable for a Trust to invest in activities that bear a significant risk of loss.

Personal assets are often sold into a Trust to protect them from creditor claims. Losses cannot be distributed from a Trust; they are accumulated in the Trust and set against future profits.

Choosing a business structure has long term implications.

What is your vision for the business? What are your objectives?

What is your exit plan? What risks are inherent in the business?

What are your other assets and income? The answers to these questions will dictate which one is best for you.

Questions of ethics

New Zealanders Michelle Pratt and Nikki Prendergast are the founders of Child Labor Free: the world’s first global accreditation system to independently inspect and analyse companies and their supply chain for the use of child labour across all product categories. Their vision is to create a world where children are free to be children.

Read on to find out how they started up and how we can all do our part.

How has working with EY and Saatchi & Saatchi helped you?

After coming up with the concept of Child Labor Free, how exactly did you start up?

Both of these companies have worked tirelessly to help us build a successful business model.

Experts in their fields, they have helped us on this journey in many ways – from developing our assessment structure and consumer facing mark, to preparing us to enter the global market.

It has been incredible, and truly humbling, and has helped build a platform for success.

Michelle: Child Labor Free came to life when Nikki and I were made aware of a startling fact – the products we sourced, and children in our centres enjoyed, could have in fact been made by children. We had no way of knowing, and this sent us searching for a way to be sure our supply chain was free of child labour. But we couldn’t find a way to know – it didn’t exist – and we were gobsmacked.

Nikki: We undertook a global review of the issue. We researched child labour, NGO’s working in this space, other accreditation services, and spoke with experts about the topic. We worked with Saatchi & Saatchi to look further, to see if this was a conversation in social media across the globe. We discovered so many people were asking where their products came from, and often or not, no one had the answer.

Michelle: And when we knew this, we felt we had to put a stake in the ground and start somewhere. That’s when Child Labor Free was born.

What kind of help did you have?

M: To build a successful business model we knew we needed specialised expertise. We have worked with some incredible people and organisations to get to where we are today.

Ernst and Young have guided us through the process of supply chain inspection and analysis, Saatchi & Saatchi have helped mould our vision into a reality, and our legal team from DLA Piper and Goodwin & Turner have advised us through unchartered waters globally.

N: We have been so blessed to be supported on this journey by our staff at New Shoots Children’s Centres, all who have stood with us as we tackle this issue, as well as our family and friends who have listened to us pitch concepts, make plans, and have embraced the journey themselves.

Did you have a vision of how you wanted the organisation to grow or has it been an organic process?

M: We come from an early childhood background and the vision in our children’s centres is centred on integrity, positivity and innovation. We will continue to have a vision of our organisation leading the charge for businesses everywhere to adopt ethical practices.

N: Once we made the decision to progress with Child Labor Free we developed a strategic plan, but so much of what has happened has been organic, and incredible. It is still early days yet, but the engagement has been such a testament to the changing way people consume.

How does your accreditation process work?

M: Accreditation starts when a brand or business approaches us to join this journey.

They submit documents and information as per our guidelines, and this is all sent to our independent assessment team to be evaluated. From here manufacturers, factories and suppliers may be physically inspected. Companies are awarded the mark at three stages.

Manufacturing certification means their products are put together with no use of child labour; component certification applies to the manufacturing of both the product and the elements used to make a finished product.

This could include packaging, zips and buttons being child-labour free, while source – the final stage – means the raw materials are all entirely sourced in a way free of child labour.

There may be some brands that are unsure of how ethical their supply chain is, or perhaps they already know that child labour is involved in the production of their goods and want to change but are too afraid to speak up. What would you say to those brands? How can they make a change?

M: Becoming child-labour free, or understanding and changing any area of the supply chain, is a journey. To brands that are unsure, or know perhaps unethical things could potentially be occurring in their chain of supply, I would say imagine the difference you could make by starting the journey. We have never operated in the belief that blaming and shaming can fix this problem, and instead say to all these brands everywhere, we are here to help make a positive change right now, today.

N: Sustainability no longer just means clean and green, it never has. It means treating people sustainably, with kindness and care and consideration. By starting to ask the questions, and addressing these problems, you are changing the stories of so many mistreated people.

Can you shed some light on how much of the goods we consume in New Zealand are not child-labour free?

M: To answer this question is especially difficult. A large number of companies are doing incredible things in this space, operating ethically and sustainably, treating their staff and their communities incredibly well. And others are not. The issue of child labour is

far more prevalent than you think and affects almost every product you touch at some point in its supply chain. Gold, tobacco, building materials, agriculture and textiles are just some of the industries that are affected by child or forced labour. The every day New Zealander, or world citizen for that matter, has limited ways of readily knowing who is operating in a manner kind to people, and who are potentially exploiting workers and children. Conscious consumerism is on the rise, but currently consumers do not have an easy and accessible way to interact with supply chains.

Why do you think it’s important that businesses and consumers think more consciously about their supply chain/ consumption?

M: The things we wear every day, eat, write with, send texts with – they all had people involved in the making of them. That is hundreds, even thousands of people working to clothe, feed and make your life easier, more comfortable, and more efficient. These people are all as important as we are, and need consideration all the same.

How can other businesses get involved (if not directly with yourselves then through what other means)?

N: Entering into this space is a journey. We cannot expect change over night. But by being aware and accepting things have to be different is the start of this journey. Ask questions; do not accept things as they are now.

What is your background that has people be so happy?

I spent the last 30 years in the engineering trades/project management, design and construction industries and loss assessed, case and project managed, repaired and rebuilt over 200 properties in the past four years working with professionals inside and outside insurance companies, dealing with lawyers, architects, structure and geotechnical engineers, and teaming with repair and re-build

company teams to ensure favourable outcomes for people. Because we can see what others can’t, I believe the biggest difference we are making is giving people clarity about what actions that need to be taken, and offering clear communication - that in itself offers peace of mind and takes the stress away.

Why do you think people are turning to Kennedy & Co for assistance?

What’s the most important factor when helping people from your perspective?

Clarity of communication is critical. It takes the emotion out of the negotiations.

Apart from communication, accuracy of scope of works and having the right team to do the work is required. There are always misinterpretations and different dynamics between the insured, project managers, building companies, city councils and insurance companies.

Challenges do not just come into a project at the beginning, they occur anywhere and anytime through the whole process.

At what stage are people calling Kennedy & Co for help?

They are calling us at any point in time during their EQ claim. As we understand the process from beginning to end, we know we can step in and make a difference at any point in time.

With insurance companies reverting to cash settlements, people are looking for SOW (scope of works) reviews for security. Or if there is the need to re-negotiate, we work alongside them to ensure they get what they are entitled to and to get their claim settled.

Many people are uncertain whether to proceed with re-builds/repairs, so need advice, or in the final handover stages of property repairs/ rebuilds there are issues that arise due to misinterpretations.

Many challenges are in the middle and final sign off phase of a settlement or just near the end of the completion of repairs or rebuilds.

How do you deal with the emotion of people who are upset, stressed and anxious?

A person’s home was once said to be their castle and we believe that as it is generally your biggest asset with the most emotional attachment to it. We understand that!

In our experience the most important thing to get right is communication.

We come in and offer clarity on what is required to do to repair, rebuild their homes, and/or cash settle them for the right costs.

We bring in the experts and provide evidence to the Insurer. We take the heat out of the communication and provide another view.

We are here to help people get their homes sorted and so that they can move on in their lives.

Do you have preferred experts you work with?

From our experience we know the strengths and weaknesses of the different companies because we have worked with them. We have personally vetted all our preferred suppliers; from builders to geo-technical/structural engineers, QS services, project managers etc. and we have a number of strong legal teams – all highly reputable and proven. We have preferred people we can endorse however, if people want to use their own builders, we can manage quality, budgets and timelines.

Do you offer advocacy?

We work in partnership with all parties involved.

We do not act for insurance companies, we act for our clients. It is distinct and not what we would call advocacy.

Any final words?

Paid parental leave: a new paradigm?

Earlier this year, New Zealand extended paid parental leave from 14 to 16 weeks for new parents.

This currently puts us at number 29 out of the world’s top 34 developed countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) rankings.

Although a planned boost to 18 weeks is due by April 1, 2016, it still leaves us lagging behind.

Labour MP Sue Moroney has been pushing a Member’s bill to call for 26 weeks paid parental leave since 2012, but late last year had to amend the bill to limit it to parents in special circumstances because of lack of support due to implicated costs. At this point in time, the bill is still awaiting its second reading after a defeat in February.

Moroney’s proposal for a further increase in paid parental leave is due to the importance of parental presence in the early stages of a child’s life.

“A taskforce assembled by the Chief Science Advisor recently reported: ‘Secure motherinfant attachment is an important predictor of resilience in later life including higher self-esteem, reduced anxiety and reduced hormonal responses to stress… many adverse developmental outcomes can be prevented when parents are provided with support and information that enables them to be optimally responsive to their infants and young children’,” according to a fact sheet on Labour’s website.

Not only this, but they also state that the proposed 26 weeks also covers World Health Organisation’s recommendations that a woman breastfeeds for at least six months.

“The rates of breastfeeding vary substantially around the world; the rate of exclusive breastfeeding among infants under six months of age ranges from one percent to 89 percent.

One of the most common reasons that women stop breastfeeding is that they need to return to work,” according to their report, Breastfeeding policy: a globally comparative analysis.

The report also states that although returning to work is not the only reason for the varying rates of breastfeeding among infants, it is the difficulty of continuing to breastfeed while at work that women often state as their reasons to weaning their child.

A study by Growing Up in New Zealand, focused on around 7,000 children from Auckland and Waikato born in 2009 and 2010, found that nearly 40 percent of babies were put into childcare before nine months because of financial factors.

But even when childcare comes into play, money can still be an issue. For one child, Work & Income New Zealand provides a childcare subsidy of $4/hour for incomes under $1,200/ week, and zero for weekly incomes over $1,400.

The average cost of childcare in Auckland can range anywhere between $220 to $408 a week for children under three years of age, according to Te Rito Maioha Early Childhood NZ; so based on a 50 hour week, not even those on the lowest wage bracket would be covered by the subsidy offered.

Arguments against paid parental leave, or at least the extension of it, include the financial burden that it puts on employers, the government and therefore the tax payers, but what kind of balanced economy are we looking at if parents can’t afford to spend vital time with their children during the early stages of life, which will arguably have significant benefits in the future, if the support isn’t there?

Economic factors A study in 2012 by Rutgers University titled Pay Matters: The Positive Economic Impacts of Paid Family Leave for Families, Businesses and the Public, found that paid parental leave actually leads to positive economic outcomes.

The study showed that women who use paid leave are far more likely to be working nine to 12 months after a child’s birth than those who do not take any leave, with the women also reporting an increase in wages from pre- to post-birth.

Not only did the women see an increase in pay and continued work, they were also found to be 39 percent less likely to receive public assistance in the year after their child’s birth.

The giants weigh in US tech company, Netflix, made headlines in August with the decision to amend its parental leave policy so that all new parents would be granted one year of leave after the birth or adoption of their child.

The policy has since come under fire, reported that only salaried staff are entitled to the leave, meaning hourly-paid staff are not. So while the waters are still a little murky over the reach of its benefits, for a country where paid parental leave is not actually legally enforced, this is a progressive step for working families.

Since the release of Netflix’s statement, other IT companies such as Microsoft and Adobe have also changed their parental leave policies to increase workforce diversity. From November 1, Adobe will be offering 26 weeks of paid maternity leave and 16 weeks paid paternity leave, while Microsoft will increase its paid parental leave to 12 weeks from November.

The alternative But is time off work the only option that employers and employees can rely on?

For those who argue financial burden over the importance of being with a child, what alternatives are there to paid leave?

A study by Statistics New Zealand found that employment and return to work rates were highest for those who had earned the most before taking parental leave, showing a disconnect between higher and lower earning families.

Should we therefore be putting more emphasis on helping families, especially those on lower incomes, back to work through greater flexibility and more options?

Earlier this year Vodafone New Zealand extended its paid parental leave from 12 to 16 weeks for full time employees (for either mothers or the primary caregiver). They also now offer mothers who return to work within 12 months the ability to work 30 hours a week for full pay for the first six months.

Part time or flexible hours could be a start, as would the ability to work from home or childcare within the working environment. Granted not all of these options would be suitable for all types of work, but if possible they would certainly help parents get back to work at the right time and in the best way for all involved.

Sustainable travel the next big thing For the first time more than half of all global travellers are influenced by the environmental impact of their trip.

Online travel website Booking.com is predicting huge growth in sustainable travel and advising accommodation providers to get in early and make the most of the trend.

Following a survey of 36,000 people across 16 countries, including 2,016 in New Zealand, the company anticipates that for the first time, environmental impact will play a significant role in the decision making of over half of all global travellers.

Booking.com New Zealand area manager, Tracey Foxall says sustainable travel is about to go mainstream.

“This puts accommodation providers in a unique position to take advantage of this, thanks to New Zealand’s growing appeal and international reputation as an environmentally conscious country.

“Already we’ve noticed increasing numbers of accommodation providers putting in

the hard work to meet the demands of the sustainable traveller.”

THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL

In Sierra Leone West Africa there is a small, remote village called Boma that is home to about 120 people.

Their lifestyle is basic; primitive in comparison to the western world. There is no electricity in the village and the homes have dirt floors. The aftermath of the 10 year civil war that devastated the nation continues to have an affect as communities struggle to rebuild 11 years on.

But life in Boma is changing for the better. Forest farms have been rehabilitated, locals have the ability to earn an income and girls are attending school. All this and more has been made possible because some kiwi blokes decided to do a bit of good.

Their business is called All Good Organics. It’s a company with a conscience on a mission to make a difference in the world and serve some tasty bananas and top notch soft drink in the process. Its products are Fairtrade and organic, meaning they are good for the land, good for the farmers and good for the customers.

All Good is by no means a charity, but rather than holding onto all of its pennies, it is sharing its wealth by returning a percentage of its sales to the farmers it sources its produce from. It’s a novel approach and one rarely seen in today’s business model. But co-founder Simon Coley says it’s working remarkably well, both for the business and the farmers.

Pulling off the veil Food production is a subject of mystery around the world. Consumers aren’t typically shown where food comes from or how it is made. But All Good Organics is different, it has ripped off the veil and welcomed customers into every inch of its business, there are no secrets here.

“Doing ‘good’ business is something that is very important to us. We want to make the supply chain transparent. People should understand where their food comes from and the consequences of them purchasing it, and we give our customers that right.

“There is a growing movement in the country which has crystallised in the last 10 years around conscious consumption. We recognise that people deserve to know what they are putting in their mouths beyond the nutritional information on the back of the bottle or packet.”

Good intentions In typical kiwi fashion the idea for All Good Organics was sparked in a laid back style. The location was Piha Beach, where three mates, Simon and brothers Chris and Matt Morrison met up to enjoy the surf, sand and hatch a plan for the business.

The plan, in brief, was to sell bananas.

They’d take bananas from Samoa which grew abundantly and were seldom exported and bring them to New Zealand.

In the 1950’s 20 percent on Samoa’s GDP came from fresh fruit exports, but the ensuing few decades saw Samoa’s exports squeezed out as large plantations from the Philippines and Ecuador began to dominate the industry with cheaper prices and larger quantities.

They took it upon themselves to change this and reinstate Samoa as the banana exporting nation it once was. “We naively thought that it might be good to try and bring that business back and bring those bananas to New Zealand,” Simon says.

But in the rush of blood to the head there were a few logistical obstacles they hadn’t accounted for. “We didn’t really understand the complexities of supplying perishable fruit. At first glance it seemed like getting delicious bananas from your neighbours in the South Pacific was a great thing to offer New Zealanders, but it turned out to be quite challenging.”

The first shipment was rotten and the second shipment was impossible to sell. The Samoan bananas are smaller than the Cavendish bananas New Zealanders are familiar with. “Plus they aren’t ready to eat until they are really ripe, almost black. So that was a bit of a disaster.”

After two unsuccessful imports it was time for plan B, but the criteria still remained the same; the bananas had to be high quality and sustainably grown. “We wanted to show people it was possible to purchase fruit that was sustainably produced by farmers who received a fair price for their product. banana companies haven’t been kind to the people who grow the product, often paying less than it’s worth.”

The solution was found when they discovered the Fairtrade El Guavo Association of Small Banana Farmers in Ecuador. The co-operative comprises of 150 small family farmers who under the Fairtrade organisation pool their bananas to sell large quantities to businesses like All Good.

Typically it can be extremely hard to get a share in the market when competing against mammoth plantations, but the El Guavo association has found the solution.

Its first boxes of bananas were sold in 2010.

“The minimum amount of bananas we could bring in was one container load and in the first insistence we needed to sell 1,200 boxes or about 100,000 bananas. It was quite scary when we started because that’s a lot of bananas.”

But those nervous days are long gone. Today All Good import three containers a week which are sold to New World and Pak n’ Save supermarkets across the country and a number of independent organic grocers. “We sell around 60,000 bunches of bananas each week and hold around five percent of the competitive banana market in this country.”

Sweet justice With banana sales making progress the boys didn’t sit still, branching out into drinks. Their backgrounds naturally lent themselves to the drinks industry as Simon had previously worked at 42 Below, while Chris was the pioneer of Phoenix Organics and the former head of Biogrow.

Over 1.9 billion cola branded drinks are consumed everyday in the world, but many of them are a far cry from All Good’s premium fizzy beverages.

Simon says it was a niche in the market ripe for the taking and they simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to provide a better alternative.

The range includes Fairtrade and organic Gingerella Ginger Ale and Lemmy Lemonade, and its signature product Karma Cola. The businesses philosophy of doing good is exemplified by its relationship with the farmers who grow the cola nut; the key ingredient which gives the drink its genuine cola taste.

Once upon a time the cola nut was an essential ingredient in the original cola beverages we are all so familiar with, but today that flavour is

synthesized in almost all cola drinks expect for one of course - Karma Cola.

The cola nut has been central to life in Boma for hundreds of years. It is used for important rituals, medicine and also as an appetite suppressant and stimulant, but no formal farming of the nut for commercial export has ever been set up in the region.

In keeping with All Good’s business philosophy, the team turned to the Fairtrade association for help to find a cola nut farmer, an extremely rare commodity in South Africa.

Through their contact in West Africa, Albert Tucker, All Good was able to receive samples of the cola nut in New Zealand.

After experimenting with hundreds of samples mixing it with vanilla bean grown by the Forest Garden Growers Association in Sri Lanka and organic sugar cane from the Suminter Organic Farmers Consortium in Maharashtra, India, it came up with a product it thought was darn good.

Pleased with the product, Simon travelled to Boma to meet the growers face to face and formalise their relationship and supply. The Cola nut farming business has now brought new life to the primitive village and opened up a world of opportunities.

But All Good is helping the region by more than just doing business with it; it has set up the Karma Cola Foundation. With every bottle sold part of the proceeds go back to Boma.

“Our drinks really do make a difference.

When customers purchase the drink they are supporting something bigger than just the product, but the whole community in Boma.”

With Karma Cola what goes around really does come back around.

The fairest of them all In June last year All Good was recognised for its outstanding efforts with its innovative projects and relationship with its growers, when Fairtrade International recognised it as the fairest trader in the world.

“It’s not something we sought out to get, but we are very grateful to be acknowledged by Fairtrade. It is good proof that what we are endeavouring to do really is making a difference.”

And it is easy to see why it received the prestigious award. Thanks to kiwi consumers who have bought All Good Fairtrade bananas over the past five years, $6.6 million has been sent back to the farmers and their families in the El Guabo Co-operative. The money has been used to give 6,400 people free medical care, 2,000 children school packs to get a proper education and 460 children with special needs have been able to go to school.

Meanwhile through the sales of Karma Cola it has contributed over $US 60,000 to the Karma Cola Foundation, truly transforming life for the people of Boma. The foundation has funded a bridge connecting the old and new villages of Boma, supported 50 young girls to go to school and funded an education programme to teach HIV awareness and prevention.

It helped the 2000 villagers of the Tiwai community to avoid Ebola infection by providing education, training and equipment, and supported the wider Sierra Leonean effort to fight Ebola. “Thankfully no one we work with has been infected. There’s still a need to be vigilant, but it appears the worst of the Ebola crisis has passed.”

The foundation was also able to support the rehabilitation of 12 rainforest farms that had fallen into disuse during the civil war. The forest farms are of crucial significance for producing food crops and to enable villagers to develop their own income.

Karma Cola is now sold in nine countries: New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, China, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Stockholm, with over 60 percent sold in overseas markets.

And its growth is on the rise; in the last financial year Karma Cola grew by over 150 percent in turnover, to $3.5 million. “We anticipate that we will double our turnover and the number of boxes of drinks we sell, in the current financial year.”

Christmas is coming, so plan your company event early

The key to a successful Christmas party is starting early. It’s never too early to book your event regardless of how big or small your company is.

Companies book their Christmas event as early as February and sometimes when the tinsel is still up after their last Christmas bash.

Organising a corporate Christmas function takes time and the earlier you start, the easier and more painless this will be. You may even enjoy the process.

Leaving it late is of course what many of us do, but last minute deals aren’t as common as you might hope. By booking early you will have more choice as to where you go and what you do and it will be less stressful.

Choose a date and book a venue Christmas is a popular time of year and also a busy time of year. Ideally you will have the whole office attending, so setting a date and booking a venue early is imperative in ensuring this and remember - you will never please everyone.

Set a budget You need a budget which will allow you to be realistic in your event choices and you should leave some money aside as a backup for any surprises. Of course not everyone has an in house event organising resource to plan their celebrations - but that doesn’t mean you can’t add plenty of flair to your own Christmas party.

Now you need to think what you would like to do? There is an almost endless variety when it comes to the type of Christmas party you can plan. It mainly depends on location, budget, numbers attending and also how much you want to be directly involved in planning and managing the event.

Bespoke or packaged Christmas Party?

Bespoke is arranging from scratch, finding a venue, organising and bringing together different suppliers such as catering, theming, entertainment etc. Packaged Christmas parties are ‘off the shelf’ Christmas parties organised by either a venue or Christmas party planner. This option is perfect for the time poor business person trying to pull everything together.

Once you have decided how you would like to organise your event you can then ask yourself the following: Have we done this before? What kind of entertainment will I need? Do we want to have music? Will we have people dress up?

Will we invite partners? What type of food is going to appeal to everyone? Have I considered the all-important dietary requirements? How am I going to make this memorable? Do I need to organise transport or accommodation? Finding a venue with pizazz or thinking outside the box can sometimes make for the best events.

The food is a key part of any party And it can also be incorporated into your theme.

Do you need pre-dinner nibbles, canapés, a buffet or a sit down three course meal with silver service? Make sure you see the menu in advance to ensure the right amount of variety and options for your group.

Give some thought to the beverages offered You want everyone to be in the party spirit, but you also want to ensure the right tone is set.

Are you going to offer an inclusive beverage package, a cash bar, or have a pre-paid limit for each person with organised drink vouchers, which will mean the budget is also not blown out by staff ordering the top shelf?

Be aware of the dos and the don’ts

make sure you give your staff a brief of the type of activity/ theme they will experience.

The best time to do this is when sending out invitations.

Do a site visit That way you can get a better idea of how things can come together and remember to make the most of the event’s team at the venue. They know the space really well and would have seen plenty of events so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

The Christmas party is not just a “Christmas party” The festivities are a thank you to the staff and the company’s chance to show gratitude and appreciation for the hard work of dedicated employees.

Ask yourself - can you afford not to? Remember that the Christmas party should be organised for the enjoyment of your staff and you should not choose the easiest option or what you prefer.

The lodge was officially opened in January 2014 and stage 1 of the development comprising 56 villas is nearing completion.

A total of 111 villas will make up the lifestyle resort.

“Thirty two of these villas are occupied, seventeen are under contract and seven under construction,” says resort manager Tony Sands.

“Construction is continuing and demand is keeping us extremely busy. Stage 1 sales have well and truly exceeded our expectations and we are doing contracts for villas that haven’t been constructed yet.”

“The development of the hospital and aged care apartments has created a significant amount of interest,” says Tony. “Largely this interest is coming from within New Zealand, but some of it from as far away as the UK. “My employer is an independent operator and is extremely passionate about seeing that the village and the hospital are completed to the highest standard,” says Tony.

Sudima upgrade a vital injection for Christchurch’s hotel and conference capabilities Sudima Christchurch Airport has always had location on its side. Now, after an extensive two year $25 million redevelopment project has been completed, the popular hotel has so much more to offer.

The first stage of the completed redevelopment project included a new wing incorporating 88 state of the art executive rooms and suites, an upgrade of existing rooms, a brand new lobby and façade, plus an expansion of the hotel’s conference facilities to cater for up to 300 guests theatre style.

Two additional conferencing venues have also been added, enabling the venue to host a further 120 guests theatre style, as well as two new board rooms.

“Arrow acted both as design manager and main construction contractor on this project, which is quite unique, but it meant we could ensure the project wasn’t derailed because of impracticalities around the design,” Steven says.

“One of the things Arrow is very passionate about is making outstanding design not just achievable on paper, but achievable in reality and without blowing the client’s budget or timeframes. That’s absolutely possible when you work in partnership with the client who’ll defer to your years of construction experience and who’ll be prepared to consider fresh ways of approaching things.

Construction began in late 2013, with the demolition and rebuild of the hotel’s most visible wing, which can be seen by those arriving to and departing from the airport.

The new accommodation wing was officially opened on July 31, 2015.

One of the key challenges around this first stage of the redevelopment project has been managing large scale construction while the hotel remained open to guests.

“This in itself necessitated a construction programme that was flexible enough to give the Sudima the functionality it needed to remain open, while adhering to the strictest of health and safety compliances,” Steven says.

Prior to the upgrade the Memorial Ave hotel had 208 rooms at 3.5 star quality. At project completion by the end of 2016 it will have 241 rooms at 4.5 star quality within its three wing layout.

Stage two of construction will start after Easter 2016 and will involve a major refurbishment of another two wings of the hotel. Comprising $10m of the total budget, this second stage will take until the end of 2016 to complete.

Sudima Hotels and Resorts director of operations, Les Morgan says the upgrade will set the tone for the new and improved city.

“The new façade will be visually striking and set the tone for travellers coming through the city,” he says.

“The developments at Sudima Christchurch Airport are among many within the airport precinct, and coincide with the recent opening of Spitfire Square, which was highly anticipated. We are working collaboratively with the airport to ensure our accommodation and conference offerings really hit the mark and are supremely attractive to guests.”

A two minute walk from the airport, Sudima Christchurch Airport is a full-service facility, offering an onsite bar and restaurant and its upgrade is being welcomed by hotel and tourism industries, which say every extra room added to Christchurch’s inventory, decimated in the 2011 earthquakes, is a bonus.

At the end of 2012 there were about 4,532 rooms in Christchurch across all accommodation types, well down on the pre-quake peak. By December 2015 the industry expects that number to rebound to 6,196.

Morgan says the chain upgraded its plan partially based on potential new airline services through the airport. The original plan to refurbish the hotel dated back 18 months and initially had just a limited budget.

However, Les says the company recognised the confidence the Christchurch Airport had in the future and, along with demand for its own services – post-quake occupancy has remained stable at around 85 percent – decided to commit to $25 million for the project.

“Although soft refurbishment activity has been underway for some time, the decision to accelerate and broaden the programme is in direct response to business demand, and our desire to really reinvest in support of the economic recovery of Christchurch,” he says.

“Additionally, it will enhance the Christchurch International Airport’s wider services, demonstrating our commitment to this partnership.”

The hotel is owned by the Jhunjhnuwala family from Hong Kong, with one of their family members based in Auckland as chief executive.

“Sudesh Jhunjhnuwala has established five hotels in New Zealand and Australia under the Sudima brand and he’s hoping to develop many more over the coming years,” Les says. CT

South America’s finest fare In the beginning of September New Regent Street gained a new tenant: Casa Publica.

Serving dishes inspired by South America, the bar and restaurant is a new addition to the city’s dinner and drinks scene, with live music each night and a licence until 3am.

Although owned by three partners, the man behind the venue is really Hugo Chile.

Colombian born, Hugo was a rum runner during the prohibition era in America.

He began running rum from Colombia to LA at the age of 15 after his father passed away, leaving him to run the family business. When the prohibition was lifted, Hugo turned to cocaine smuggling instead, continuing his role in running the underground.

Hugo’s original rum business and his edgy outlook on life is what was used to inspire Casa Publica. When you walk through the doors you enter Hugo’s world; the walls are adorned with nods to his life and the menu is fused with dishes from all across South America (tacos, salsas, tamales and Venezuelan pancakes to name a few).

The bar itself stocks 160 different kinds of rum which general manager, Lindsay, spent over a month sourcing from all around the world and around 90 of which are not available anywhere else in New Zealand.

Specially printed bibles are displayed around the bar that contain small bios about each rum so patrons can brush up on their knowledge while deciding which one to try. Lindsay even took the time to create Casa Publica’s own rum, Casa Luana, in honour of Hugo’s mother. Smoked with oranges, brown sugar and fried turmeric; it has the sweet taste of a crème brûlée with a kick from its rum base.

When business takes off It’s not very often that we get to turn our hobbies into a successful business, but that’s exactly what Pacific Simulators owner, Russell Hubber did back in 2002.

The business may have officially formed in the early 2000s, but the idea of creating flight simulators started way back in the 1980s when Russell had his own prototype to work on.

His wife had bought him a flight simulation software programme to replace flying lessons they could no longer afford and although he loved it, it wasn’t realistic enough for him, so he made his own alterations, even constructing the inside of an aeroplane to fit around the computers to create as much of a real life experience as he could.

Thirty-odd years on and his business creates flight simulators used for training in flight schools around the world and employs a highly skilled team of engineers and software developers to produce New Zealand’s only “Rolls Royce of the simulator world”.

They also own a second company, Flight Experience, which creates the same simulators but for entertainment purposes. These devices are put in malls all around the world as franchises, and so far have been placed in nine different countries with 16 franchise operators.

Every summer a special group of brave children who have battled cancer are given the opportunity to let loose and have a lot of fun for six days at Camp Quality.

Camp Quality Christchurch, which also encompasses the West Coast and the upper South Island, has been putting on fun filled camps for children aged 5 to 13 and providing year round support for their families for an amazing 30 years.

The Christchurch branch was recognised for its tireless efforts earlier this year at the Champion Canterbury Business Awards, winning the Champion Charity (Small) Award.

The regional manager, Damian Young, says it was a great opportunity to recognise the hard working staff, both current and those who have worked during the previous 30 years. “The team we have are all very comfortable working in the background. The nature of this organisation is to promote the children that we work with and their stories. It’s good to take this opportunity to recognise the people who help make it happen.”

Fifty children who have been affected by cancer are looking forward to going on camp at Living Springs in January next year. The camp will be packed with exciting activities with an emphasis on fun - allowing them to just be kids.

But these camps wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community. The camps are totally free to the children’s families and the volunteers who help run the camp, thanks to a lot of support and fundraising, in particular from the Lions clubs in the district.

Damian says volunteers are immensely important to the camp. “A great deal of time goes into making sure we get the right people involved.”

The volunteers act as a 24 hour buddy for each child and give them one-on-one support during and after the camp. All volunteers undertake an intensive training weekend before finding the best match for each camper.

There is also plenty of support during camp, with groups helping with meal service and cleaning.

“Last year Z Energy staff and various Lions groups helped in the kitchen.

“We get a lot of support from businesses that have a product or service that we can use on camp. For example, Leopard Coachlines and O’Neill Rentals provide transport, some businesses donate prizes or food products and often the activities are subsidised. We are also lucky to have the Canterbury Kings spend time with us on camp.

“If a business or organisation felt they had something to offer we’d love to hear from them.”

A history of helping ITM is all about people – a philosophy which has seen the company go from strength to strength since its formation more than 20 years ago.

Back in 1991, a group of six individuals formed the board of the ITM Co-operative Society. “A recent study asked people with a disability what a “good life” looked like to them. They said a normal life, with friends, a job, and a place in the community. This is what we want to facilitate,” says CEO Michelle Sharp.

“For a long time now we have been listening to the community and our team and we have identified a significant gap in the system and barrier for young people with an intellectual disability.

“For so many young Cantabrians, the dream of leaving school at 18 and entering the big wide world is just that – a dream. Typically someone with an intellectual disability remains in school until the age of 21 for one very disappointing reason: there are few opportunities for them to train for the job they really want.

“Kilmarnock wants to fix this and offer real, tangible, hands-on job training and qualifications to school leavers; motivating, inspiring, and enabling them to pursue a wide range of work opportunities.

Waste management tailored to your needs They say one man’s trash is another’s treasure, but when it comes to local firm Container Waste Ltd, the treasure is the entire city’s trash.

In fact the Christchurch rebuild has seen the waste disposal firm grow by a significant 50 percent during the past three years to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for its services.

“We’re always striving to be the very best we can be,” owner Darryn Harris explains.

“This was a key driver in the recent acquisition of a new two-bin trailer, which is already enabling us to increase our productivity to become more efficient and cost competitive, while reducing our emissions.”

The only one of its kind in New Zealand, the twobin trailer enables Container Waste to cart two hook bins to landfill at once and increases the company’s fleet to four truck and trailer units and three skip trucks. “Prior to the earthquakes we had two truck and trailer units transporting waste to the Kate Valley landfill and one skip truck,” Darryn says.

“So we’ve been able to expand significantly in recent years.”

Three of the four truck and trailer units will be HPMV (high productivity motor vehicles), capable of carting 50 tonnes. “These vehicles enable us to be more productive by giving us the ability to cart another five tonne payload.

Kate Valley landfill was one of the first places to introduce a dedicated route for HPMV trucks, which further increases efficiencies.”

Established by San-i-pak owner, Paul Whitehead in 2001 to meet the private needs of the quarantine waste company, Container Waste has continued to grow and evolve over the years. “Paul started with skip trucks to service his own needs then, in 2005, when the Kate Valley Landfill opened, we expanded into hook and lift bins.”

Today Container Waste is an expert in carting ‘special waste’ to landfill, which can include anything from asbestos and industrial chemical waste that has been neutralised and converted to sludge, through to out of date food and beverages.

Container Waste has a range of bins and containers specifically designed for the various types of special waste, which it delivers to clients’ sites. Once loaded, the company collects the bins and transports them to landfill.

It provides a similar service for general waste haulage, and also hires skips of various sizes to both residential and commercial customers.

Setting the gold standard for vehicle repairs Operating without an Eftpos machine or even a computer, the Christchurch panel and paint business on Wordsworth Street was in need of a serious overhaul and that’s exactly what the new owners have given it.

Paul and Debbie Thomas dragged JA Ward Panel and Paint out of the dark ages when they purchased the business three years ago. “When we bought it, it was almost on its knees. It was tired and old with no systems and very tired equipment, so we’ve really turned it around,” Debbie says.

“The commercial sector accounts for around 80 percent of the skip business, servicing mainly Canterbury builders and construction companies. We actively work with our customers to add value to their business and have crane-rated skips in two sizes for the more difficult jobs.”

The skip waste is delivered to transfer stations, but ultimately ends up at landfill, as there is currently nowhere to recycle these materials. Container Waste even established its own recycling company but it wasn’t viable to continue.

Darryn has been involved in the waste industry for more than 20 years now, starting as a Wastecare driver in 1993 and continuing with the company for four more years after it was purchased by Waste Management in 1999.

He was then operations manager at San-i-pak before buying a half share in Container Waste around five years ago from Paul Whitehead, who at the time owned both companies and, in April 2011, Darryn and his partner Tami Whitlock took full ownership of the company.

“Paul and I worked together for a number of years and have always gotten along extremely well. He has been really supportive and is still a customer of Container Waste,” Darryn says.

“We’re all about providing great, hassle-free service to our customers. To do that we have invested in high quality vehicles and equipment, and hire only experienced, professional drivers.

New KFC Papanui delivered within exacting criteria Watts and Hughes Construction has successfully completed the new KFC Papanui in Christchurch to an exacting budget and timeframe.

Quantity Surveyor Tim Hollister says while the project for client Restaurant Brands wasn’t particularly unusual, the timeframe and budget were challenging.

He says a particular feature is the detailed timber cladding, which was completed by Morel Construction, and the butynol and metal roofing, which was done by Newfield Roofing.

The four month build was completed on September 25th within Restaurant Brands’ tight requirements. “They gave us a tight timeframe and budget and we impressed even ourselves by meeting them,” Tim says.

The KFC Papanui project is a typical job for Watts and Hughes Construction, which is doing a number of other projects for Restaurant Brands around the South Island. “We’re about to commence a Carl’s Jr in Hornby and we’ve recently started a refurbishment of a KFC in Greymouth,” Tim says.

Watts and Hughes Construction was the main contractor responsible for the build, which involved demolishing the old KFC in Papanui Road and building a new one.

“We did everything from the demolition and earthworks to the concrete foundations, main build and carparks and driveways. The building is timber framed with a combination of Titan board, plaster and Accoya timber cladding,” says Tim. “The building is a similar footprint to the previous restaurant but it’s been rotated on the site.”
