Helping New Zealand families get ahead is a priority for the National-led Government. We’ve made a number of positive announcements in recent months that highlight our commitment to that.

Leadership, communication and innovation are intrinsically linked in successful companies.

Leadership is a word we hear often, but we don’t really stop to think about what it is and why it is so important. The fact is that leadership is the single most sought after trait in the business world today. Leadership and learning are interlinked – you can’t have one without the other.

Corporate culture is not an idea or something you buy off the shelf. Positive corporate culture is proving to be the ‘game changer’ in our competitive commercial environment and there is a very obvious reason why - the rise of the Millennials.

Successful leadership is making the difference between extreme success and unnecessary failure. It underlies everything that we strive to accomplish, from motivating employees to excel beyond their self imposed limits, to inspiring shareholders who seek confirmation of their confidence in skills of your company and its management.

In a recent study by the Resilient Organisations Research Group at the University of Canterbury, it was discovered that organisations flourish when they are focused on employee wellbeing. It is no longer ‘the thing you might focus on one day as an organisation’, or an extra competency you look for when hiring your next senior manager.

Leadership is not something that we are born with. Sure, some people exude confidence and charisma along with the gift of the gab, but they got there through understanding the intricacies of leadership.

Positive culture provides significant increases in a number of key areas of any business. It is measurable in terms of output, retention and succession, and is a fundamental element in corporate success.

These include news that more than 1,700 people in the greater Christchurch area who have been helped into their first home in the first 12 months of our new KiwiSaver HomeStart scheme.

In April last year we doubled support for first home buyers through the scheme. Low and middle-income couples can now apply for government grants of up to $20,000 to put towards a deposit for their first home.

This scheme is proving to be all the difference for many young families who are telling us they couldn’t have bought their first home without it. We’re investing $435 million into this scheme and it’s expected to help around 90,000 New Zealanders into their first home over five years.

Another way we’re helping Cantabrians, and other New Zealanders, is through investing more money into Pharmac so it can fund more lifesaving drugs.

We’re putting an extra $124 million into Pharmac over the next four years, which will bring its budget next year to a record $850 million. Pharmac says this extra money will allow it to fund treatments across a wide range of health areas, including for advanced melanoma, Hepatitis C and brain tumours.

Many of the drugs to treat these illnesses are cutting-edge and extremely expensive, which puts them out of reach of most New Zealanders unless they are publicly funded.

Another way we’re helping everyday New Zealanders get ahead is reducing compliance costs and making tax simpler for businesses, particularly smaller ones. Small businesses are the backbone of the New Zealand economy and are critical to the success of many communities around the country including in Canterbury.

Some 97 percent of all New Zealand enterprises employ 20 or fewer people, so it’s vital we search out ways of reducing the financial and time burdens these businesses face.

One of the key changes we’re making is reforming provisional tax, so that up to 110,000 small businesses will be able to use a new ‘pay as you go’ option from April 2018.

These tax measures build on other initiatives we’ve already put in place to help small businesses. These include cutting ACC levies by $2 billion a year since 2011, putting more money back into New Zealanders’ pockets, introducing 90-day trials, and rolling out faster broadband.

Helping more Kiwis into home ownership, improving our health system and helping enterprising small businesses are just some of the ways we’re helping hard working New Zealanders get ahead.

Leadership involves the guidance of the conduct of others and leaders need to be more effective than others in conveying meanings and intentions, and in receiving them. It is an important maxim that all leaders must be realists and recognise the need for action, even when that action is not so apparent or can’t be foreseen.

Inspired leaders know what they want and how they are going to get it, they motivate people, they can manage information and knowledge, and they know what it means to them and their business. Truly inspired leadership comes from being motivated, dedicated and honest.

We’ve all heard the saying ‘walk the talk’. This is true and is essential. In addition, trust, respect, and a willingness to adapt a common purpose must become a self disciplining code of everyday working life.

Time seems shorter. Technology is faster and staff are smarter.

Together, we always need to be one step ahead to keep leading people to the next plateau of success. So where do we start.

Are we ready to take up the challenge of competing with others in leading business?

Leadership is not a job title, it is an expression of who you are and your values. Be encouraged to take that all important stride forward with confidence, knowledge, commitment and with winning attitudes.

Jack Welch of GE had six rules for leaders and here they are: 1. Face reality as it is not as it was or as you wish it to be.

2. Be candid with everyone.

3. Don’t manage, lead.

4. Change before you have to.

5. If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete.

Culture will become a top five priority for every business in the next three to five years, as we embrace the millennial generation as the dominant demographic in our workforce. Globally the organisations and leaders who are doing something about it now will relish the returns.

Baby Boomers revolted against their conservative upbringing and by doing this they set a more dominant culture in which to raise their children. Millennials seek collaboration, vision, values and the ability to make a difference to both their work and social environment, and these things are at the core of their wellbeing.

Recognising achievement, driving innovation and taking risks are all part of the millennial generation’s habits.

They are educated, confident, connected and technologically savvy. Did I mention ambitious? Millennials are proudly and positively ambitious; I personally love that about them. This positivity will contribute to the day to day performance of an organisation, contributing to an energised, effective and productive workplace.

The big difference between Millennials and Baby Boomers is that they not only seek, but desire, a good work-life balance. A fulfilling job will only solve half of the equation in their pursuit for excellence. Further education and professional development will become an employee benefit that is the difference between someone staying and committing to an organisation versus low retention rates.

When looking at any business the first question I ask is “how does your culture look to an insider?” The second is “how do you embrace the needs of the next generation of leaders?”

If you were to ask yourself the same two questions, would you draw the great power of the Millennials to your team?

Millennials are your emerging leaders; do all you can to help them rise and you will be rewarded.

Four strategies to deal with low interest rates One of the biggest challenges currently facing investors is low interest rates. With inflation at rock bottom levels, this challenge may be with us for some time yet. Below we outline strategies to deal with this situation.

1. Be realistic about returns Respondents to a recent investor survey believed on average that a nine percent return was ‘medium’ and 15 percent was ‘fairly high’. With today’s low interest rates, these expectations look unrealistic to us without taking on very high levels of risk.

In our view, it is prudent to set objectives and invest with modest return expectations. Investment returns are linked to inflation, growth and interest rates, all of which are pointing to mid to single digit returns over coming years.

2. Understand risk, especially those new to investing Returns from a balanced portfolio are not like returns from the bank. They go up and down. Do not expect a straight line. The degree of volatility will depend largely on how a portfolio is split between lower-risk income assets (cash and bonds) and higher-risk growth assets (property and shares).

Understanding this is especially important for new investors. In the wake of low interest rates, we notice an increasing number of people diversifying their portfolios away from bank deposits to shares in search of higher returns. Returns over coming years are not only likely to be lower, but also more volatile.

3. Build a portfolio that generates sustainable income We believe a key benefit of building a portfolio of direct assets is obtaining access to the underlying interest and dividend cashflows from the investments. Income is not fixed and can fall if interest rates decline or dividends are reduced, but it is significantly less volatile than movements in share and bond prices. As such, income provides somewhat of a cushion during periods of market volatility.

4. Be prepared to supplement income with capital withdrawals The decline we have seen in interest rates means that relying only on income generated by a portfolio can result in a significant decline in income.

We believe investors should be prepared to reduce capital to help supplement their retirement income. This does not sit well with many investors who believe capital should be passed on to the next generation intact. This may have been possible when interest rates were eight percent or more, but those days have passed.

Buying your way into tourism

At our firm we undertake a lot of team training making sure everyone is up to date and top of their game.

Tourism has flown firmly into number one position as New Zealand’s prime industry – with no finish line in sight.

Conversely we are privileged to also assist many businesses train and upskill their own teams. A common grizzle from clients is often “Oh, but I spend all this money training my staff and then they go and leave on me!”

Buying a business in the tourist sector can be a lucrative lifestyle option, attracting the sociable, savvy and adventurous.

Opportunities abound in every niche.

It’s not an uncommon complaint, but let’s take a moment and put this into perspective. I personally would turn that argument on its ear and ask, “Is it better to invest in someone, glean some advantage (money, experience and expertise) from the training and then lose them… or to spend nothing on them, have them useless in their role and have them stay?”

I know which I prefer out of the two – but ultimately I would rather train and have them stay – of course.

There is a fundamental rule in business, well there’s lots, but today I want to focus on the rule that “If nothing changes – nothing changes.”

It would be one step short of insanity to change absolutely nothing and pray that a different result will happen in terms of your team. It is human nature that (most) want to better themselves, be more productive, more efficient, earn more money. These all go hand in hand with upskilling and training.

The good news is - training is (usually) tax deductible, so that’s another win for you as an employer, as well as a win for your team member.

When it comes to training, how much should you spend?

Well that of course depends on the business, the nature of the position, the skills required, the individual employee/ manager/owner.

There are too many variables to give a succinct answer here. Nonetheless one thing is certain – everyone in the organisation needs training – on something: from health and safety, to systems, to stress management, to HR, to finance, and so on.

And just because you own it, doesn’t exclude you from needing training (in my honest opinion). Probably more in fact!

A challenge can be finding courses that fit your needs. They are out there - it’s just a matter of sourcing them. A favourite these days are webinars where you can leverage the cost across a greater number of attendees.

Keep a record of all your training on your individual employee files. It’s best practice and appropriate if you should ever end up in a performance managed exit where you might be accused of failing to provide support and training.

While a growth market is desirable when buying any business, tourism business buyers still need to exercise care ensuring the business has a future and will provide a return that will service any loans and support the lifestyle you want.

Although there are some great opportunities, it is more tactical buying in today’s flourishing market, compared to grabbing a bargain in a downturn.

With an increase in airlines flying direct to New Zealand, such as Air China and American Airlines, tourist numbers are picked to keep growing. The once ghost town of empty beds is now a thing of the past.

When considering the purchase of an accommodation business, such as a boutique bed and breakfast, not only are you entering the real estate market, but possibly providing a family home, an income and lifestyle, while increasing future value. You can live in a location that you love and choose the length of the season you operate.

Having an entrepreneurial drive may tempt some to start out on their own, but finding a suitable established business is usually the best way to go, as you can assess its market, financials and offering, to ensure it is profitable today and hopefully tomorrow. This takes the gamble out of the equation - not to mention saving invaluable time and having cashflow from day one.

There is a much higher success rate with a successful existing business. Established accommodation and adventure operations will usually have a sound financial history, new and returning customers, as well as proven systems.

Tourism operators have the security of knowing that industry partners such as Tourism Association New Zealand are working hard with initiatives to increase tourism numbers and spend into the next decade.

Often the previous business owner will stay on a bit to get you started or provide mentoring – so prior business experience is not always mandatory. A good option is to visit some businesses that appeal and get a feel for them, their profitability and if you can see yourself running it.

From the modest but bustling city centre café to a remote high-end lodge, there is a slice of tourism pie for all.

Choosing seats that work for a wide range of people is a real challenge. There are so many considerations.

Delegation, or the lack of it, can make or break any business.

Unless it’s a part of your job, it’s unlikely that you get to buy chairs that often. Maybe at work you might have some input into the choice of chair, but generally we get what we’re given.

Sometimes these are chairs that with some adjustment features you can use to make yourself more comfortable.

A chair that fits you reasonably well and is adjusted to the right height is a key factor in keeping pain free at work. Office chairs are not particularly cheap, but there are several reasonably priced options on the market if you know what to look for.

Pointers to look for when choosing a chair: • A seat depth that gives you enough leg support (3-4 fingers between the front of the chair and the back of your legs) • A back which is high enough for you to lean back and be able to feel your shoulder blades against the chair • Preferably the ability to adjust the chair back angle • Ability to raise the seat up high enough so that the keyboard can be used with relaxed shoulders • Some lumbar (lower back) support or the ability to tilt the seat forwards (helps keep the spine aligned when sitting).

Beware of ‘sitting time’ You may have noticed that chairs sometimes have a ‘sitting time’ rating of 4, 8 or even 8+ hours. This relates to how much padding the seat has, the back support and the chair’s adjustability.

An eight hour rating is not giving you permission to sit for that length of time! No matter how good a chair is; it is how you are sitting and how long you sit in the chair for that will determine if you start to develop low back pain.

If you’re desk bound, try to get up at least once an hour during the day and ideally get out for a walk at lunchtime; this helps increase circulation around your body including in your brain. Everyone I come across who does get out for a walk always says how much better they function for the rest of the day. If you’re not already walking, give it a go.

Remember, you have options Look around and consider your options before you buy. Aim for flexibility in adjustments and look for chair models with some options of seat sizes. If you’re unsure what to buy, get some specialist advice.

As I work with both large and small companies in a very wide range of industries around the world, I constantly hear that many owners and managers struggle with delegation.

I’ve noticed two major mistakes made by many well-intentioned folk: 1. They’re available too much of the time to their staff.

2. When passing a task over, they give lots of unnecessary detail to competent staff.

Being available for staff isn’t of course an issue in small farming businesses, but for many business operators and owners, it can be. Do you have a lot of interruptions? Do you find that staff with queries, phone calls, drop-in visitors and emails regularly break your focus?

If you’ve said ‘yes’ to staff interruptions, consider this: We’ve come out of the dark ages where bosses communicated as little as possible to their underlings. People were expected to take instructions and just get on with the job.

During the last few decades there has been a change in management style. We’re now encouraged to communicate openly with our staff, to ‘empower’ them. However, there’s a downside. Many business owners feel they have to constantly ‘be there’ for their people.

So where does delegation fit in here? Being ‘there for your staff’ 100 percent of the time is not good management. In fact, it causes bottlenecks, frustration and low morale, and blocks your staff from learning and developing their own skills.

If competent people keep interrupting you with questions they should be able to handle, ask them to come with two solutions every time they come with a question. Pretty soon you’ll reduce the questions.

If they’ve had to work out the answers before they come, they’ll soon realise they don’t need to interrupt you for what amounts to a ‘rubber-stamp job’. If you’re too quick to supply the answer, you encourage laziness and dependency.

Beware of good old human nature – the tendency to take the easy road. For many people, if they can get someone else to do their thinking, why wouldn’t they ask!

And a solution for Point 2; if a staff member is competent don’t force your details on them. Instead, give them the big picture of what you want to achieve and see what they come up with.

Of course you’re willing to guide, coach and review, but beware of unnecessary detail. Often a good staff member will have a better way.

Beating the mid-winter blues As the days get shorter and the temperatures get colder, winter can be a challenging time in the office, affecting both employee productivity and performance.

Get to know your team members and find out what engages and interests them. An increased flow of communication shows employees that management care about their wellbeing. Giving yourself and your time to others changes their mood, and yours.

Be aware of any changes in post-holiday behaviour and address any concerns you may have. Be approachable and sympathetic to make employees feel comfortable coming to you with any potential grievances.

The winter blues can cause a lack of motivation in the workplace, so look at setting goals and incentives. Setting goals for both management and employees to work towards can help fight complacency and inspire staff.

As an employer, it is important that staff feel they can talk to you with issues they have within the workplace - if they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed for example. Water worries

If there’s one thing needed to sustain an economy, it's water. Without a stable supply of fresh, clean water, eco-systems would die, agriculture would collapse, infrastructure would stagnate and there would be a high rate of disease.

By proxy, this makes water the most precious commodity on our planet. With that in mind, protecting and preserving our fresh water sources should be a national priority. So is it?

The question needs to be asked because a chain of climactic events appears to be threatening the vitality and stability of our natural fresh water resources.

In Canterbury the problem is particularly pressing. Between the offshore sale of spring water adding to the strains of drought, and an expanding dairy industry’s impact on local waterways, the long term picture of our fresh water resources is noteworthy of some consideration.

Aquifers and the offshore sale of spring water There are at least 11 consents active in Canterbury for the extraction of fresh water for the purpose of bottling and selling.

There are conditions in place to protect the resource, including monitoring the source, its production and extraction levels, but with no central register for water-bottling companies in New Zealand, the total number taken offshore is unknown; a somewhat disturbing fact.

More than 24,000 people have signed an online petition against Ashburton District Council’s plan to sell Lot 9 to a bottling company.

Canterbury’s Water Rights Trust spokesperson, Roger Young says selling the rights to bottle water is better than the alternative of using that water to make milk.

“Perhaps we should applaud overseas companies for making the most of an opportunity New Zealand should have done years ago – sell the water rather than turning it into milk, with its associated environmental impact,” he says.

a local river from which water would be diverted to an aquifer recharge site. But what happens when our rivers dry up, as data suggests is a very real possibility of continuing at our current rate?

An expanding dairy industry The dairy industry is steadily growing and with it the amount of water being used for irrigation, and the amount of nitrates contaminating local waterways. With local waterways then used as a water source for many farmers in the area, this circle of life is literally toxic and adds to the deterioration of our fresh, clean waterways.

Improving and maintaining the quality of our waterways and reducing nitrate run off needs our invariable applied attention.

Life without water For as long as we’ve inhabited New Zealand it has provided a seemingly infinite source of clean, fresh water. Our access to dependable water sources has sealed our position as a first world country.

Two of our most economically fundamental industries depend upon a constant supply of fresh water: dairy and tourism.

Without water the dairy industry would collapse and exports would suffer, and the tourism industry would take a significant hit, either or both of which would result in a certain degree of economic strife and the relative flow on effects.

What can we do?

Is the Sustainable Water Programme of Action implemented in 2003 currently in place doing enough? Do water extraction consent conditions need to be stricter? Should the government put an appropriate cap on the sale of offshore spring water? Should they consider placing restrictions on the size of dairy farms in certain locations?

The Kiwi lifestyle not only supports, but encourages collaborative success.

Is there more we could be doing to prevent running our country’s water resources dry and to, essentially, prevent the collapse of our economy as we know it?

Exactly how much longer will our lifestyle survive if we continue to deplete our local resources at the current velocity of degradation?

But should we instead be allocating the use of such water for purposes that contribute to the survival or existence of communities, like irrigation, hydro electricity production and domestic and industrial use in New Zealand, and simply put more appropriate limitations in place?

The impact of drought Canterbury is experiencing heightened drought conditions and as a result, many river flow levels are among their lowest in years.

If this pattern continues, and consent remains in place to extract water from Lot 9 at a volume of up to 45 litres per second until 2046 – or not exceeding 3,888 cubic metres per day, or 1,419,120 cubic metres per year – the local community will seriously suffer.

One condition for the extraction of water for bottling and selling is that water taken must be replaced by another source, usually

10 traits

all good leaders have

There’s no easy answer for how to be a good leader. Different approaches work for different individuals, but if we look at some of the notable leaders of the past and present there is, unsurprisingly, distinct characteristics they all share.

1. Courage

The good news is that courage can be learned, according to author, speaker and CEO of Giant Leap Consulting, Bill Treasurer.

2. Curiosity Curiosity is not only a prelude to foresight, but also identifies threats and opportunity, and seeks out areas for improvement. It took curiosity for Alexander to explore and conquer Macedonia; for Sir Isaac Newton or Stephen Hawking to question the natural world around them and lead the way to understanding.

Aristotle spoke of courage as the first virtue. Many speak of it as the backbone of leadership. Leaders need to be decisive yet inclusive, innovative yet reasoned, selfless yet confident – all of which takes courage.

5. Decisiveness For better or worse, decisions shape history just as much as the people themselves do. Decision making would be easy had we all the time and resources to put into it, but in many situations decisions need to be made instantaneously and under pressure.

Good leaders possess the power to block out background noise and “interpret situations with rational and emotional intelligence” says Bill Treasurer.

6. Persistence

A good leader takes an active interest in the world around them.

A good leader is unremitting. Forbes contributor and author of Leading So People Will Follow, Erika Anderson notes that “passion isn’t a wild, loud, take-noprisoners quality. True passion requires honestly committing to something about which you feel deeply, and staying committed through difficult circumstances.”

9. Strong work ethic A good leader is a hard working leader who organises their time so as no second is wasted. They achieve higher productivity than the average worker - meeting benchmarks before anticipated and ticking off goals at an accelerated rate.

A leader’s work ethic also sets the benchmark for others.

10. A sense of humour It’s all very well to be serious about what you do, but a good leader recognises the need for humour, both inside the workplace and out.

Many people find comfort in humour and by appropriately using humour, a leader becomes more relatable, staff are more inclined to open up and any potential problems are likely detected in advance.

A study by Bell Leadership Institute found that a strong work ethic and a good sense of humour were the two most desirable traits in leaders.

The magic of regular feedback

You might recognise some of the following “myths” about Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) and that they are somehow “different” such as:

• Seeking personal meaning through work

Praise good performance

• Valuing work-life balance

Recognition and praise is best delivered in the environment where the actual performance occurred, ideally among the person’s peers.

Alternatively, if you are in a virtual team, make sure to send the team a notification of your praise being delivered. Let the whole team know when someone is doing a good job whether it is hitting their numbers, or getting their key tasks done on time.

• Valuing learning and growth over remuneration.

Research conducted in 2014 found that Millennials are not as different as the media would have us believe. We are all pretty much the same with respect to our alignment (or otherwise) with the above statements.

The research report “Workforce 2020 - The looming talent crisis” surveyed more than 2,700 leaders and 2,700 employees from 27 different countries and they did uncover a couple of key differences about Millennials.

It seems that Millennials: • Value formal training and mentoring more than previous generations • Want more feedback from their managers than previous generations.

Only 46 percent agreed that their managers delivered on their expectations for feedback.

So here are some suggestions for making sure you are delivering on the feedback expectations of your team members.

Make performance visible Use software dashboards to make each person’s goals and tasks clearly visible - not only to the individual, but to everyone else on the team.

Once these goals and tasks have been negotiated and agreed with each team member, they should be made public so everyone on the team can get real time visual feedback on: • What each person is working on • How well each person is tracking.

Coach poor performance It’s not fun, but it has to be done. Problems seldom fix themselves. If you allow poor performance to persist without providing honest feedback and taking visible action to improve the situation, the manager is implicitly saying to the entire team that, “poor performance is OK around here”.

If you allow poor performance to be the norm, a culture of mediocrity develops.

Ask coaching questions If someone is struggling, talk to the nonperformer in a non-threatening and supportive way and ask the following three questions: “I see the number of sales appointments you booked last week is ‘in the red’ again…

Making performance visible is a huge help, but it’s just the beginning. Dashboards don’t absolve the manager of their obligation to coach and support their people. I have a saying, “Successful business execution is 20 percent getting clear about what needs to be done, and 80 percent following up to make sure it actually gets done”.

Allow the employee to respond. There may be valid reason for something not getting done.

Let them come up with solutions first. Then suggest others.

If however they are habitually falling short and can’t make the necessary improvements within an agreed time frame, then it is your role as a manager to do something about it.

3. What support do you need?

Make it clear that you are on their side and that your role is to support your team members to be successful. Work together to come up with

If someone is unable to perform on your team, you either: • Coach them to meet the standard

When to give a damn T.S Eliot was on to something when he scribed “teach us to care and not to care”.

But what exactly did he mean? The onus here is differentiating the damn-worthy from the damned. When is giving a damn justified, and when is it not?

The art of not caring

Not giving a damn means going about your day with purpose.

It means not getting distracted by the inconsequential. It means being able to appreciate the differences in people, in communities, in life.

Essentially, it means understanding that bad things happen to everyone and sometimes we can’t do anything about it. In those times, where we are powerless to the programme of the universe, it’s best to save our damns for something that we can actually change for the better.

Indeed, our damns should be used at times that intrinsically matter. Imagine if you are only allotted a certain amount of damns to use in your lifetime. Suddenly, knowing when (and to who) to allocate those damns becomes a lot clearer.

Is the cashier who won’t accept your coupons worth giving a damn over? Probably not. Is the council’s act of selling off precious local resources worth giving a damn over? Probably.

Of course there are exceptions – we all have bad days now and then where everything seems to drive us crazy – but truthfully, if you find yourself caring about every trivial encounter and occurrence, then chances are you probably don’t have many (if any) deeply rooted beliefs to legitimately give a damn about and fulfil your ‘damn quota’.

Chances are you’ve either lost focus, don’t have a lot going on, or have too much going on, and the coupons aren’t really what you give a damn about. In any case, your life compass is probably due for recalibration.

Take a moment, sit down and ponder what it is you want, and stop taking your frustrations out on the person who may or may not have just been doing their job.

Granted it would be nice to pull a Clarke Gable and say to everyone in every situation, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a

5 signs you need an attitude adjustment A bad mood and a bad attitude are not the same thing, but the former is undoubtedly a precursor for the latter.

A bad attitude develops gradually; we get into bad moods for various reasons and these bad vibes build upon each to develop a bad attitude.

Worse still, bad attitudes are contagious. Don’t become a statistic in the pity party pandemic – if you are experiencing some (or all) of the following symptoms, you could well be in need of an attitude adjustment.

1. Everything irritates you And by everything we mean everything: the grocery item you forgot to pick up; the family member asking a favour; the food joint that didn’t get your order right; the remote batteries dying… need we go on?

The solution: ask yourself whether this inconvenience will matter a year down the track. This is an easy way to gain perspective and put seemingly mammoth issues in their place.

2. You are jealous and bitter about others’ success Humans are, by nature, competitive. But we are also compassionate beings, and when competitiveness overrides compassion and deems you incapable of celebrating the successes of others, chances are you’re becoming (or have already become), resentful.

The solution: set your own goals and stop comparing yourself and your progress to those around you. Everyone has a skill set – some greater than others. Make the most of yours by focussing on effective ways to use your skills towards achieving your goals.

3. “But” becomes your best friend “I was going to… but something came up.” If the word “but” features frequently in your vocabulary, it’s very possible that excuses are stopping you from utilising your potential. Instead you’re probably wasting opportunities.

The solution: take note of how often you actually say “but” and you’ll realise how it allows your positivity and motivation to elude you. Make a conscious effort to end your sentence before using the “but” word.

4. You are ruminating, not reflecting After a difference in opinion you spend countless minutes going over what you should have said and what to say next – sound familiar? Endlessly replaying a negative scenario in your head is a clear sign that negativity dominates your thoughts.

The solution: the easiest way to move on is to keep busy.

Failing that, write a letter to the person which you don’t intend to send. Externalising your feelings this way allows you to shed anxiety without upsetting the other person, or further fuelling the disagreement.

5. You believe the universe is conspiring against you Unsuccessful people tend to claim they are unlucky, but it’s more likely that a negative attitude is blocking them from making the most out of life’s serendipitous situations. The feeling that everyone else has it better than you is the gateway to negativity and a bad attitude.

The solution: instead of focussing on what is or went wrong, find the positives in your situation. If you are still struggling to see through the fog of negativity then take a walk – virtually or physically – to charities and sites of the less fortunate to remind yourself that the world you inhabit probably isn’t nearly as bad as you perceive it to be.

Baking ambition

It all started with a bagel four years ago.

Well actually it started with the want to see wholesome products on the shelves of supermarkets – products that weren’t chock full of ingredients that chefs themselves haven’t even heard of. But bagels were the first thing to appear from the oven.

Solid employee relationships Given their growth rate and rapid expansion in such a short space of time, Steven puts a lot of emphasis on company culture. A positive and supportive work environment is essential.

“We try to support our staff like family. One of our main goals is to become a living wage company and we’ve only got three employees right now who are under that, but that’s the goal – to get their and everybody else’s wages in line with that. It’s important. I mean I know I certainly couldn’t live on $16 per hour!”

This passion for quality food is what kick started Good Honest Products founder, Steven Illenberger, into creating his first few products for supermarkets across Christchurch.

“When we started we were only ordering in a couple of bags of flour. Now we’re pretty much going through about three tonnes of flour a week.”

Processing this amount of flour requires a great deal of work which Good Honest Products are not shy of. In November last year they were announced as the 14th Fastest Growing Company in New Zealand on the Deloitte’s Fast 50 list, with a growth rate of 378.09 percent during the past three years.

They were also crowned the Fastest Growing Manufacturer in the Christchurch and Upper South Island category a few months earlier at a ceremony in Canterbury.

“It was an incredible achievement. For a tiny bakery in Christchurch that I didn’t even think anybody had heard of, to be 14th in the country is ridiculous! It was kind of mind blowing,” says Dawn Ballagh, the company’s ‘Queen of everything’.

Since starting out in 2012, the team at Good Honest Products has grown from 1.5 employees to around 23. They were first stocking Fresh Choice in Merivale and Raeward Fresh stores around the region with bagels, and now supply 250+ cafés and restaurants with breads, bagels and macarons, as well as running their own café from their base in Wigram.

“We have come a long way from the initial idea and that was just driven by demand,” explains Dawn. “I think we got six calls in one week at one point and we were just like ‘this is crazy!

What’s happening’? And then we started and everything got thrown into the air, we've moved offices again… I think this is our sixth or seventh office now.”

Success for this bakery is simply down to service and product – not groundbreaking stuff, but if you’ve got the right formula then rapid growth is a sure thing.

Steven himself has been a chef for around 30 years and a baker for 13, while Dawn has been a chef for 20 years. With two people like this running a tight ship, it’s not difficult to understand why things have been, and continue to, work in their favour.

way better than I am, but they can’t see the end result so that’s where our experience comes in,” Steven says.

Good, quality products

Steven’s team of 23 employees includes some key players who have worked with him in the past. Previous experience and an already existing relationship between himself and his staff has created a tight-knit team that runs like a “welloiled machine”.

Their bakery runs 24/7 meaning things are always on the go. Steven describes shift patterns as being broken into three parts: dayshift who take care of the café and supermarket products, the nightshift team who take care of the fresh bread, and then the packers and drivers who arrive at midnight and are on the road by 3am.

Steven is careful not to overload the work and will only take on three new customers per week to keep everything balanced. Dawn maintains that having worked with many members of staff before, the familiarity has helped processes and systems naturally fall into place.

The rapid growth may be making the treadmill run a little fast, but they both assure me it is “controlled growth”.

“We don’t see all of our staff all of the time, and they don’t see each other all of the time, so in order to get it down through everybody and get those systems in place, it’s just far easier to be super controlled,” Dawn says.

Going the extra mile The theme of support runs right through the core of Good Honest Products. Given their tight relationships with clients and understanding exactly what someone needs, the team literally go the extra mile for customers.

“If somebody has had a crazy lunch and they’ve got nothing left for dinner, we’ll whizz out and take them some stuff because we have our café, so we have the flexibility with product to drop it into them. I was at a customer in 15 minutes after he had called with the issue, and we can’t always do it, but if we can then we will,” explains Dawn.

Close relationships and a driven personality throughout the company is what pushes them forward. Even though growth plans were already in the pipeline, after the Deloitte result, Steven and his team decided to ramp things up a little.

With some motivation from the team at Deloitte, they have formed an advisory board whose main aim over the next year or two is all about going further into supermarkets.

Client connections have also brought export inquiries from China, a massive industry with ongoing potential for them to enter when they are ready.

“It’s huge,” explains Steven. “We’re working through that but it’s exciting as well that the possibility is there.”

For a tiny bakery in Christchurch that no one had even heard of, they’re making waves in a very big pond and the future looks golden.

The products they sell to customers, from their own café to the goods being delivered to supermarkets, cafés and more across New Zealand on a daily basis, are all handmade and contain the best ingredients they can get their hands on. No nasty stuff, just pure quality.

“It’s the way we like to eat… and it’s just a better quality product as well. You can really tell. When you put a supermarket loaf beside ours, it’s just completely different.

“With our super grain loaf, all the ancient grains we use are super nutritious – chia, flaxseed, mullet rye, all of those things. Super foods are such grab words at the moment, but that’s what we eat. Our customers recognise that as well. They know that we’re not the cheapest on the market but you pay for what you get,” explains Dawn.

Secrets to success Good Honest Products is Steven’s seventh business venture – not through failure though.

He often gets easily bored so sells up and moves on, but this one has stuck. He claims it is the brand’s ability to move across different products that keeps him interested.

What their past experience means for the company is an understanding to what clients both want and need.

This time round he has also managed to maintain more control over his products. With some of his other businesses, clients dictated how they had to make things, but not this time around.

The Good Honest Products stock range can be adapted to meet certain needs, but they refuse to add emulsifiers and preservatives to their goods – that’s just not how they do things and current clients respect that.

“We’re working on some products right now for Addington Raceway and we’re talking to them on the same level. We are asking them what they want to do, so we know exactly what they’re trying to create on the plate, whereas bakers are absolutely brilliant at baking bread,

An enterprising entity Mark Twain once said of Dunedin, “The people are Scotch. They stopped here on their way from home to heaven thinking they had arrived.”

While it’s an eloquent way to describe just how cool this southern spot is, it’s far from wrong.

Nestled comfortably at the head of a dramatic natural harbour sheltered by the Otago Peninsula, the city of Dunedin extends from inlet to open sea, finding its home on the physical peaks and troughs of an extinct volcano, forming an impressive regional backdrop.

But it’s far from just physicality that has been the making of this striking city.

Food for thought Food related businesses are becoming increasingly important to Dunedin, as the trend towards locally grown and real food continues to gain momentum.

Dunedin has an eclectic variety of food companies, from world famous chocolate and beer brands, to small companies specialising in all sorts of niche products such as ice cream,

Dunedin gets gigged up Digital connectivity is playing an integral role for Dunedin’s newest generation of innovators as the city’s tech industry boom ramps up.

In addition to the private capabilities, the city will be lit up by a network of gig-speed free Wi-Fi zones throughout the city. The Dunedin City Council has signed a three year, $430,000 contract with Spark to provide 12 Gig-enabled Wi-Fi hot spots, in addition to the Octagon Wi-Fi launched late last year.

The win also came with a $200,000 development fund and a $500,000 community fund. The community fund was opened to Dunedin community organisations using fast broadband infrastructure and UFB to enhance the development and implementation of community, learning and workforce opportunities in the city.

The next round of GigCity Community Funding opens in August 2016.

Fisher & Paykel is investing significantly in its design and technology division, Scott Technology and Silver Fern Farms are building smart robotic meat chains in place of the old freezing works.

Revamped Gold Rush-era warehouses are being reclaimed by an expanding technology sector.

The development fund was created to provide a launch pad for new to market UFB-led service concepts in Dunedin. The fourth and final round of the Gig-Start Fund will open later this year with $33,000 still available.

Now the city’s Internet infrastructure is rapidly becoming the best in the Southern Hemisphere.

After a year of social media lobbying, Dunedin was crowned victor in the Gigatown broadband competition in November 2014. With it came a new supercharged Wi-Fi network offering speeds of more than 50 times faster than the average public Wi-Fi. Almost every Dunedin property will have fibre to the gate by the end of 2017, with gig plans being subsidised to the level of basic broadband prices until February 2019.

The ‘Gig’ is Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) at its fastest. It’s capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to one gigabit per second (1Gbps).

At home this means faster downloads of movies, music and data while at work faster file sharing, download and upload speeds, increased innovation and better services.

Chorus CEO Mark Ratcliffe says the organisation is keen to see it realise the full power of truly high speed, affordable and accessible broadband.

First off, it means Dunedin homes and businesses can get Gigatown Internet plans, or superfast 1,000 Megabit per second or 1 Gigabit per second Ultrafast Broadband (UFB) fibre connections for the same cost that most of us pay for a mid to high-end UFB plan that offers a tenth of that speed.

“It should be the engine for Dunedin to drive investment and job growth in the city while education, healthcare and community services all benefit. The city has the opportunity to steal a march on others to become New Zealand’s, and the Southern Hemisphere’s, first true smart city.”

A smarter approach to buying electricity Dunedin company Energy Link has launched the Energy Exchange, a website where businesses with large electricity bills can now “deal like experts” when they contract for electricity.

The Energy Exchange works for electricity consumers who are large enough to get non-standard rates from retailers for fixed term contracts, either because of their total energy spend (typically $75k or more), or because they have a lot of sites to supply.

The Energy Exchange process is straightforward and only requires the consumer to enter some details about the sites they want supplied, which can be found on their electricity invoices: the so-called “ICP number” which is a unique site identifier used throughout the electricity industry.

Once these are entered, the consumer sets up their auction or tender and Energy Exchange then sends the details to electricity retailers, who respond with supply offers. The real smarts come into the auction process, where retailers submit offers until the lowest priced offer is left at the end of an auction, or for larger and more complex requirements, the deal selector tool allows multiple offers to be quickly sorted and selected after a tender process closes.

Bringing Sexy Summer Jobs back Someone must be having a lot of fun at the Dunedin City Council, with clever catchphrases coming out of the organisation.

There has been the council’s ‘red carpet not red tape’ project, designed to support businesses through the regulatory process, Dunedin’s ‘Night Sky City’ concept supporting its energy plan, and the Sexy Summer Jobs business internship programme, which all started with a speed dating event between businesses and students.

Established in 2008, the Sexy Summer Jobs programme links students to businesses, with the majority of businesses being start-ups or early growth stage companies where capital and talent are critical to growth.

In September last year, a number of small and medium enterprises from sectors such as ICT, biotech/health technologies, education and research, creative, primary production, engineering and niche manufacturing, met with students from the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic to find potential interns for the summer.

“The city’s investment in the programme allows businesses to take the chance to employ a talented person in a cost effective, low risk way, resulting in the retention of skilled people and

“The internship programme is one way that we can access top local talent to help us grow.

We employed one of our interns and employed another developer based on the reference of another intern. We are pleased with the way they are contributing to our business,” she says.

The programme creates jobs across a variety of businesses and retains skilled student talent in Dunedin, with 276 students having so far been placed in paid internships. On average, one in two interns are offered employment after their internships. For the 2014/5 season, 24 positions were established in Dunedin businesses.

“From the outset, Sexy Summer Jobs has met the needs of both students and employers by providing great employment opportunities here in Dunedin, a good chance of permanent work and the provision of a talented and enthusiastic workforce.”

The cutting edge of cancer research Whether Dunedin’s tech industry boom is on its way or already here is a matter of debate. What is less ambiguous however, is that there are some exciting things happening within the sector in this southern spot.

For Dunedin-based cancer diagnostics firm Pacific Edge, it is the regional link to research and development – which is at the very heart of this innovative tech firm – that gave rise to its Dunedin location.

“There’s a high level of technical capability that exists here in our field of research and a developing talent pool in the students that come out of the university,” Pacific Edge commercial director Brent Pownall explains.

“That’s not even considering the variety of benefits for our Dunedin-based staff in terms of the cost of housing, absence of transportation issues, access to a world-class medical school and university, and a more community-focused lifestyle.”

Since 2001, Pacific Edge has been breaking ground in the development of diagnostic technology for the early detection and subsequent management of cancers.

While the company initially focused exclusively on its research and development capabilities and planned to rely on strategic partners for the commercialisation and marketing of its products, it has now taken three commercial products to the market itself.

These commercial products are based on the genomic markers that define different types of cancers. Core technologies include the latest molecular biology techniques, gene expression analysis and signature development, proprietary bio-banks for validation, clinical trials and data, and proprietary analytical software.

“The decision to commercialise these products to the end point and market them under our own name has been quite a significant shift from the original business plan and focus for the company,” Brent says.

“So within the last eight years, our activity has shifted to the clinical application of technologies and the improvement and refinement of that technology, to create high accuracy, early stage diagnostic tests.”

The heart of the company’s current commercial products is Cxbladder, used for the diagnosis and management of bladder cancer via a non-invasive urine test.

The diagnostic tool that checks urine samples in the investigation of haematuria (blood in the urine), may eventually replace the long established use of cytology to assess urine samples for bladder cancer, by enabling a more accurate and prompt diagnosis.

Pacific Edge’s initial focus for growth has been on the US because of the size of the market, but the company expects that Cxbladder will have a place in New Zealand as a DHB funded diagnostic tool for urology, with Canterbury DHB already participating in a 12 month pilot of the technology.

“We have a very strong, loyal and established shareholder base now and that, in part, harks back to our roots. We’ve successfully grown the company and continue to do so.”

Marking 25 years on the move The longevity of a business is something to be proud of.

Ian Trounce is certainly proud of the fact the transport company he established in 1991 is celebrating 25 years of service.

“I had been involved with the transport industry in mid-Canterbury since 1973”, Ian explains. “I worked for two local companies until 1991 when, with my wife Donna’s support, I decided it was time to give it a try on my own account.”

Ian realised he needed to have the capacity to cart flat deck loads as well as bulk loads, but he was just starting out and didn’t have a great deal of money to invest in a vehicle.

Ian’s solution was to buy a high mileage older lift-out sided truck and trailer unit. “Luckily it gave a good run for several years.”

Ian has a farming background. His family owned a dairy farm and that’s where he started his working life, but milking cows with the early starts and finishes wasn’t for him. He did however attend the local Young Farmers Club for several years in his younger days.

Here he got to know a number of other young people with the same background. When they learned he had set up his own trucking firm, they were keen for him to cart grain from their farms to the various local mills.

For the first year or so of Trounce Transport’s operation, Ian worked on his own in the truck, but as time went by the workload started to increase.

“I started carting loads of straw to the West Coast and coal back from there for the local

market. This was good regular work because straw needed to be transported right through the year and the coal was always available as a back load.

“It became too much for me to cope with on my own, so it was clearly the opportune moment to purchase another truck and trailer unit, and employ a full time driver”.

During the next several years Trounce Transport gained a reputation for providing a good reliable service at the right price.

Consequently the work load increased even more. Three additional units were acquired and three more drivers employed. Today Trounce Transport employs four full-time drivers and has six truck and trailer units, all late models.

Making repairs disappear Many businesses claim to have great customer service, but few actually put these words into action. KB Panel and Paint Ltd are one of the few businesses in the Ashburton District who has proven time and time again it means business when it comes to customer service.

The collision repair workshop’s philosophy has remained the same for the last 13 years. “Our philosophy puts a huge emphasis on being customer service focused,” says company owner Kieran Breakwell.

The company’s service today mainly consists of carting grain from cropping farms and delivering it to the flour mills, as well as supplying dairy supplements to dairy farms.

In 2006, because of a demand for the bulk storage of product, Trounce Transport built a 1,000 sq metre shed in their yard which can store up to 3,000 tonnes of grain in one bulk heap.

Twenty five years on, Trounce Transport isn’t a huge company. It’s been built up to a level Ian says he can run himself without having to employ too many extra staff.

On the occasion of the company’s 25th anniversary, Ian would like to thank his present and past clients who are spread all around the South Island.

The company, as a result, sells many of these vehicles sight unseen, including those in transit to New Zealand. “This has helped us grow immensely,” Niki says.

It’s not only the local dealership that has been riding the digital wave, with the vehicles themselves also becoming more tech-savvy.

“Vehicles are becoming a lot more complex,” Niki says.

“European manufacturers like to set the standard for others to follow, so their cars feature extremely advanced technology, such as collision avoidance technology, their fuel economy is often under six litres per 100kms, with some of these vehicles now able to travel up to 1,400 kms on a single tank of gas, and navigation and Bluetooth streaming are now standard.”

A taste of history The Tai Tapu Hotel is celebrating 160 years of offering hospitality to hungry and thirsty customers.

Originally providing accommodation and sustenance to drovers moving stock on the three-day trek from Banks Peninsula to the Addington Market, the restaurant at the hotel is as popular today as it ever was.

It’s the casual, relaxed country feel that appeals and the authentic historic character that has been maintained in the style and décor of the hotel.

The first and, to this day, only hotel in Tai Tapu, was built in 1856 when Edmund Shakespeare erected an accommodation house called Shakespeare’s Accommodation House.

Shakespeare’s care to build a sturdy building is evident today with the timbers still being in remarkably good condition.

The front of the hotel was built of kauri, black pine and totara and it most likely had a thatched roof. In 1861 the hotel was granted its liquor licence and became known as the Ellesmere Arms Hotel, the name it retained until 2003. In the 1860s the hotel was also a popular stopping place for the Cobb & Co coach on its daily return trip from Akaroa to Christchurch.

Like all country pubs, the Ellesmere Arms Hotel has a “horse-in-the-bar” story. It is said that Wendy, a well mannered pony, would knock at the public bar door before entering and

consuming the odd pint of best bitter, until she became noticeably pregnant and her liquid intake was changed to water!

In 2016 the Tai Tapu Hotel no longer has yoking yards to rest cattle, but it remains a unique country hotel in a spectacular setting nestled at the foot of the Port Hills and overlooking the picturesque Halswell River and the Tai Tapu Golf Course.

The hotel employs three qualified chefs all dedicated to serving the very best gastro pub fare. The a la carte restaurant has a wide selection of delicious meals, from lighter salad options to main meals with appropriately quirky names, such as Oh My Cod, Mr Crackle ‘n’ Pork, Divine Duck and The “Man Steak.”

Platters, pizzas and wines in the sheltered courtyard are another dining specialty, while the Sports Bar has live rugby, a juke box, pool table, dart board and a TAB pod.

Lifting the veil on elder abuse Age Concern believes that the older population should be treated with the utmost care, respect and dignity, but sadly a significant percentage of New Zealand’s older people are suffering from elder abuse.

Elder abuse is an action or a lack of action that causes harm to an older person. There is often a level of trust between the abuser and the older person and this causes harm and distress.

Commonly Age Concern sees abuse within four different categories – psychological, financial, physical and neglect – although often several types of abuse can occur together.

Founders Field - a platform for greatness “This must be the most dramatic setting in New Zealand for a sports field.” These were the words of former All Black, Reuben Thorne, when he saw the site of Founders Field, the large-scale sporting and recreational development within the Living Springs campus.

This is no ordinary sports field however, but rather a multi-use space for sporting events, outdoor concerts, festivals, even jamborees, sited high on the hills with a mind-blowing view over Governor’s Bay and Lyttelton Harbour.

“We’ve had a dream for more than 30 years to create a level playing field at the campus,” says Denis Aldridge, CEO of Living Springs.

“Back in 1983 when we built the swimming pool, the brief for the project mentioned the need for a sports field, but priorities changed and it didn’t eventuate. After the earthquakes, with the loss of so many playing fields in the city, the time seemed right to resurrect the concept.”

So the 8,000 sqm gentle hillside area in the heart of Living Springs is being transformed into a grassed level playing field, which will step down to an adjoining hard court area for handball sports, such as volleyball and basketball, and a grassy terrace with seating for picnics, family and community events.

“The Founders Field is intended to be a platform for greatness for all who visit Living Springs.”

The process towards achieving such a vision was never going to be easy.

The area has been named “Founders Field” in honour of Living Springs’ founding families. Back in 1972 they had a vision to attract thousands of young people and community groups into a unique and breathtaking setting.

It was rather like the early days of the campus when the founders and trustees had big dreams and not enough money to pay for them. Some five years elapsed from the initial determination to proceed with the field, before sufficient funding was raised through grants to move into the design and consent stage. Then the project definitely gathered momentum.

“We knew that work of this kind was very much Fulton Hogan’s specialty,” Denis explains. “We approached them about being involved in our project and they were very excited to be part of the team.

“Over the past months Fulton Hogan has made a huge contribution to the project, not only by identifying and delivering very cost effective engineering and construction methodology solutions, but also by helping out in other ways that have resulted in cost savings for us.”

Three thousand New Zealand men continue to die each year from conditions that could have been prevented. Women live four years longer than men, 65 percent of men are overweight or obese and the suicide rate for men is three times that of women.

Men’s Health Month (held in June this year), is an international awareness month designed to raise the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment. The theme for June 2016 was #MenStartTalking.

With 13.2 percent of men deeming to have no one to talk to about intimate matters, compared to 9.3 percent of females, the Men’s Health Trust charity took the opportunity to encourage New Zealand men to have more conversations about health – with their doctor, health professionals or simply with their mates.

Chairman of Men’s Health Trust, Phil Clemas says the best thing that New Zealand men can do for their health is to simply start a conversation. “Men are often reluctant to talk about their health – health issues can be seen as a weakness, an embarrassment or something that can safely be ignored.

“Too many men suffer and die needlessly because of lack of knowledge or lack of communication with friends, family and professionals who could help them live longer healthier lives. We believe if men start talking to a doctor, health professional or even a friend about health, it will make all the difference,” he says.

Phil is concerned that even by highlighting such dire facts and statistics, men’s behaviour doesn’t change. “Our health cannot be ignored - men can do more and its time to change this. We are notorious for not discussing problems that are going on with our health, mainly out of fear.

“We don’t like to talk about our symptoms or feelings, particularly with other men, and especially when the going gets tough.

“

Too many men suffer and die needlessly because of lack of knowledge or lack of communication with friends, family and professionals who could help them live longer healthier lives.

”

The statistics regarding the health of men are getting worse. It really is time for men to start talking about our health.”

“Keeping our kiwi men healthy, happy and strong is a huge passion of mine. Growing up with two brothers and a father who followed the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude, I learnt early on this might not be the best approach.

“I believe a strong man is someone who can ask for help, can see when something is not right and is not afraid to go to the doctor.

Exercise has more impact on health than diet Exercise has more impact than dieting on people’s health. Even among people who are obese, those who exercise regularly have a lower death rate than both obese and slender people who do not exercise.

“Recent evidence is telling us that inactivity is a bigger epidemic than obesity and even in people who are overweight, moving is protective of their health,” sports physician Dr Chris Hanna told an international medical conference in May. Dr Hanna, who spoke on ‘Fat and Fit’ at the annual scientific meeting of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, says obese people with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 and who are not fit, have a rate of 62 deaths per 10,000 people years. Obese people who are moderately fit have a much lower rate of 18 deaths per 10,000 people years.

He says “moderately fit” is at least 150 minutes of rhythmic aerobic activity per week, including walking, cycling and swimming. But people who wish to actually lose weight should do

200-300 minutes of moderate exercise and eat a healthy diet as well.

“Fifty percent of our health status depends on behaviour; whether we move around or whether we sit down, the type of food we eat and the type of sleep we get. Over the last 30 years the average weight of people living on Planet Earth has skyrocketed. More than 25 percent of the population in Australia and New Zealand has a body mass index over 30. It’s being called ‘globesity’.”

Dr Hanna says that while exercise clearly has a protective effect on the health of obese people, it is also true that they are at slightly higher risk of heart attack when they first begin a new exercise regime, which is why it is important to start gradually. CT

Men’s Health Week wrapped up on June 19, making it a good time to review the health of Canterbury men.

Sometimes a group is the best way to sort things out. There are groups for men dealing with prostate issues, cancer, depression, anxiety, and childhood sexual abuse. There are groups for those with alcohol and drug issues, gambling, compulsive sex and eating issues.

I, Donald Pettitt, run the Canterbury Men’s Centre and think about this issue an awful lot. It’s my job to see that Canterbury men are taken care of and hopefully this article goes some way to seeing that happens.

There are educational groups for men wanting to lose that tummy and for older men wanting to learn about cooking healthy meals. There is even a group for men just wanting to be with other men to talk about life. Just ask the CMC if the option you want isn’t obvious.

Men have got a lot of strengths that are unappreciated. We are (generally) very good at taking life as it comes and making the most of it, and are more inclined toward and tolerant of risks. The positive here is that we are more inclined to start a business, invent things and take on higher paying, but dangerous or less secure roles. These don’t always work out for us, but overall they do.

On the downside, our risk tolerance also means we are more likely to drink and drive, and less likely to seek help from social and health services when something is wrong. We are more tolerant of abuse and more likely to be injured or murdered.

Despite this, our infrastructure and economy is built, predominantly maintained, and lead largely by men. We are very much “doers”. New Zealand owes a very real, if usually forgotten, debt to men’s tangible skills and their diligent application.

The good news for men is that when they do decide to go from tolerance to positive action, there are now tangible options for them. The Canterbury Men’s Centre (CMC) sees 20 new men every week with the aim of coming up with a plan to do this.

We’ve also made it easy to come up with your own plan via The Blokes Book which is available for free if you contact the CMC, or keep an eye out at surgeries and other community settings.

Sometimes one on one care is the best way to get things sorted. The CMC sees 120 men each week for counselling and coaching, and that works for some.

Plus there are lots of fun, male focused groups out there. Men’s Sheds have mushroomed in 28 locations in Canterbury in the past five years. The CMC even put together a booklet with support from the New Zealand Red Cross called “Fun for Older Men” that highlights the options (free from the CMC).

On the boil for a quarter century Birthday cake is on the menu at Kelford Engineering Services Ltd this month as the company celebrates 25 years in business.

Indeed, for about the first year of the company’s operation, Steve and Mike worked from home, until 1993, when they had sufficient capital to purchase their current premises and to take on their first employee.

Steve and Mike had met at Bart Engineering, where Mike was head of the company’s boiler division and Steve was the workshop foreman.

When Bart Engineering folded, the pair decided it was an opportune time for them to go into business together and the partnership has worked well ever since.

“For us, customer satisfaction is our most important driver and consideration. Proof of this comes from the fact that many of our initial clients are still with our company to this day.

“Many of our suppliers have also been with us since day one,” notes Mike, who maintains the company’s extensive store of boiler spares and consumables.

Simplified engineering solutions It all began in a shed on a friend’s lifestyle block in Sefton with one man, a lathe, a mill and a MIG welder.

This post can be introduced and fastened to an existing fence without cutting any longitudinal fence wires. It can be ordered specifically for an existing fence repair or for new fencing. In addition, installation is more cost effective for fence contractors because the installation is simplified.”

As a successful company Smartweld sees one of its roles being to give back to the community in which it is based. Handcrafted furniture In the corporate arena, change and the ability to adapt to it can make you or break you. For two long established local manufacturers of high-end handcrafted furniture, adaptation has involved joining forces and the commercial result of this collective kinship has seen the formation of a compelling local success story.

Furniture making in Andrew Davies’ family dates back to his great, great grandfather, Robert Norrie, who was commissioned to make furniture for the first Governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey in 1873. Since then five successive generations of Davies have made furniture, with Davies’ father Robert founding Davies Furniture in Christchurch in 1961.

After a detailed engineering evaluation revealed its Blenheim Road building did not meet the new seismic building code requirements, Davies Furniture managing director Andrew Davies and former Southern Creations director Blair Quane came to an agreement that would see Davies Furniture’s staff and more than half its equipment relocate to Southern Creations’ Bromley factory.

Now four years later, Southern Creations and Davies Furniture operate from the modern, purpose-built facility at Shivas Place known as The Design Workshop.

The amalgamated company turns its commercial hand to a high quality range of furniture, such as coffee, dining and hall tables, dining chairs, bedroom sets, bedsides, hutches, sideboards, dressers and TV consoles.

But as the city is rebuilt from the ground up, custom made commercial furniture is also playing an increasing role in the local market.

Southern Creations recently supplied the tables for the new $50 million South Island Vodafone headquarters in the city’s Innovation Precinct,

which feature USB power sockets and wireless mobile phone charging units actually implanted within the tables.

The company also recently managed a large fit out for Ashburton’s Church of Latter Day Saints, which included building custom-made church pews. As well as the bar front and tables for the new Winnie Bagoes restaurant in Rangiora that opened earlier this year.

“Flexibility of design is a key trend we’re seeing coming through and there’s a real move towards supporting local industry, as people begin to take real pride in New Zealand made and recognising the level of quality being produced in the local market,” Southern Creations managing director, Fraser Bickley says.

“New Zealand design-and-made furnishings are not only increasingly appealing here in New Zealand, but also on a global level.”

Local manufacturers have faced increasing competition from cheap imported products for more than 30 years now, as well as the local compliance and manufacturing costs far outweighing the offshore rivalry, which makes the success of these local companies an even more compelling story.

“Our success has first and foremost been a result of the exceptional quality of our craftsmanship,” Fraser explains.

Canterbury’s best post quake buildings recognised at 2016 Architecture Awards From a “mega tower” on a five metre by five metre handkerchief of land through to important works of educational, public and commercial architecture, the recipients of the 2016 Canterbury Architecture Awards are a showcase of diverse, high quality buildings that have risen during the Christchurch rebuild.

The awards, announced at an event at Hagley Oval Pavilion, are part of the peer-reviewed awards programme conducted by the New Zealand Institute of Architects. The winning works set the standard for good architecture in the region.

Commercial Architecture award winners The four commercial architecture projects awarded this year include a boutique office for a prominent local architecture practice and significant retail, office and rugby developments.

“Five years on from the quakes, these awards provide us with a way to survey the profession – to see how we are responding to the challenges.

Sheppard and Rout Architect’s office blends a carefully composed addition with a grand old, two story villa. “This project exemplifies a well thought out approach to rebuilding Christchurch,” the jury said.

Jasmax’s Lane Neave building is also a commercial winner. “In a city that will see many concrete, steel and glass buildings emerge in the post earthquake cityscape, the elegance and restraint of Lane Neave marks it out as something special,” the jury said.

Knox Plaza, a retail and office building, is “elegantly proportioned” and set apart by the way it defers to Knox Church. The building’s curves and angles, rich timber detailing, and the generous provision of sheltered outdoors public space were also praised.

The pursuit of the oval ball provides much joy in the Canterbury region, so it is perhaps fitting that the jury found the Offices and High Performance Facility, designed by Athfield Architects for the Canterbury Rugby Football Union and the Crusaders Super 16 franchise, to its liking. “Out of very little, the architects have intelligently and sensitively trained this building to be efficient, proud and joyful,” the jury said. Keeping the wheels of growth rolling The term “infrastructure” for many conjures up visions of high rise vertical buildings, but for Canterbury based company Sicon Ltd, it’s the horizontal infrastructure that spins their wheels.

RA Shearing Contractors marks 40 years in business When Bob Shearing first started local firm RA Shearing Contractors Ltd from the backyard of his Christchurch home, they worked out concrete volumes using a slide rule.

“I can still remember having my first hand held calculator on the job,” he laughs.

Now as the company celebrates 40 years, it celebrates the hard work, passion and dedication of both the family and team behind its formation, and the drive and determination that continues to propel the company forward.

By 1976 Bob had already been working in the local industry for three to four years, carrying out local concrete contracting work, when he joined up with Graeme and Rose Marshall

and, together with Bob’s first wife Pam, they formed the business. The company was incorporated on July 9, 1976.

Graeme also came from a contracting background and had just finished doing the curbing around the track of Queen Elizabeth II Park prior to the 1974 British Commonwealth Games.

Together they carried out concreting and earth works throughout the city for a number of years, focusing predominantly on residential driveway and paving works, before purchasing a local Sockburn business – Wigram Concrete Posts – mainly for the yard space it offered and, along with their first truck and mini-loader, operated alongside the concrete precast business they had also purchased.

The contracting business continued with the truck and loader. They purchased a dozer and soon hired their first machine operator, Owen Johnstone. Owen is still with the company, but is now the manager of the Mayfair Pools division

From there the business continued to develop; the concrete posts division faded away while the concrete precast business continued to operate from the yard at 210 Main South Road, where RA Shearing Contractors Ltd (Shearing’s) continues to operate from, though on a much larger scale today than four decades ago.

It was in 1978 that the company became involved with the nationwide franchise Mayfair Swimming Pools, a fibreglass swimming pool manufacturer and another long standing Kiwi firm established in 1973 which today has 14 agencies spread throughout the country that meets the philosophy ‘any size, any shape, anywhere’.

“Like every industry, technology has played a significant role in how we have developed over the years. Trucks and machinery have become bigger and more efficient, but in general the earthmoving, concrete business and Mayfair Swimming Pools are still very much the same as when we first started; but we’re bigger and do more of it now,” he comments.

Diversity is the spice of life Award winning ways A long time member of the NZ Contractors Federation (now Civil Contractors New Zealand), RA Shearing Contractors has been the recipient of many awards during the years and Mayfair Pools has been a regular award winner in the franchise’s nationwide competitions.

In recent years, the earthmoving, and concrete paving, and Mayfair Pools have been separated from a management point of view, each with its own division manager, although they work together and from the same premises.

“We share resources and staff, although we do have dedicated staff to each division,” Bob says.

“The earthmoving business and the paving business certainly work together and have a lot of cross over. Mayfair operates more as standalone division, but when they want a hole dug, they come to us, when they want concrete paving done, they come to us.”

“Diversification has been the biggest asset for the company over the years and is certainly one of our major strengths. When there are ups and downs in the contracting industry, we have the ability to pick up or pull back our divisions as the market demands.”

In February this year the company purchased a drainage business – Y45 Drainage – a local twoman drainage operation that had been operating in Christchurch for the past nine years.

After a successful partnership, Graeme and Rose Marshall retired from the company in 2010 and now Bob continues to run the company, with the help of his second wife Lynn, who has her own accountancy business.

Homes in harmony with their surroundings

The works of great architects have shaped cityscapes around the world; closer to home Krush Architecture Ltd is helping to shape the new face of Canterbury, bringing a fresh look and enthusiasm to design projects.

Building in the South Island high country is a particularly unique process with many factors to consider, but choosing a builder need not be one of them.

The local owner-operated architectural design company specialises in a variety of work, from small alterations to high-end residential and commercial projects.

Run by Kelly Rush, the firm embodies all of the characteristics of a great architect, including effective communications skills, an excellent sense of design, strong technical abilities and the talent to visualise a project.

It’s because of these qualities and more that the business, which opened in 2009, has had a steady stream of work locally and nationwide.

All design work is personally done by Kelly, who has worked in the industry for more than a decade and has a range of experience, including working for major commercial construction companies and high-end architecture practices in Christchurch.

The architecture industry in the city is busier and more competitive than ever, but Krush Architecture is staying ahead of the game with a constant flow of happy customers. Kelly says his strategy to success is simple and effective.

“The key is open and clear communication with the client, performing as we say we will, meeting deadlines and just being honest and upfront."

He says he has had a number of clients approach him after being let down by other architects.

“I’ve had a lot of clients who have come to me after initially wasting six months to a year with other firms waiting to get plans. They’ve been put to the back of the pile, or there has been no communication and they’ve gotten fed up and come to me. I deliver what I say I will, on time.”

Krush Architecture recently completed a commercial project in Longhurst subdivision, Halswell. It was commissioned to design two commercial buildings that are now the subdivision’s community hub.

Kelly says the buildings stand out from the crowd. “They feature patterned precast panels that are stencilled with native trees. It’s a bit different compared to other commercial buildings around town that have standard precast panels.

“The panels are complimented with cedar, which combined gives the design quite a natural and classic look, while still being modern and high-end.”

High Country Homes (HCH) is a seasoned, award winning company specialising in the design and build of dwellings that harmonise with their surroundings.

He says he enjoys seeing a project evolve from a client’s brief or wish list and come to life.

“The best part of the job is seeing how excited and impressed the client is when they see the finished product.”

The concept of specialising in this type of architecture and field work was dreamt up long ago by HCH owner Simon Banks, who grew up hunting, fishing and climbing all around the South Island.

Krush Architecture has completed jobs in Auckland, Wanaka and Invercargill. Kelly says he wants to steadily grow the business and continue to branch out, doing more projects nationwide. CT
