Managing your sales territory

A timely H&S reminder

Fraud – a licence to print money?

Some sales representatives seem to operate in a state of chaos in regard to managing their respective territories, and others call on the same clients at the same frequency, irrespective of that client’s potential or lack thereof.

You would have to be living on a desert island not to know that under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (and regulations), workers’ safety is paramount.

There’s been quite a bit of reporting lately that the Police are unable to investigate all the fraud cases being referred to them.

But using some simple tools means managing a sales territory can be very productive and give you a far greater return on investment.

I believe there are three interacting variables in managing a territory successfully. They are: Effective routing, appropriate call allocation, and efficient time management. In this article I will discuss the first variable - effective routing.

Routing refers to the specific “style” you use and the paths you choose to cover your territory and your accounts.

The routing styles are: Calling by Crisis In crisis mode people tend to be quite unstructured. While some flexibility is good, effective territory management requires planning rather than quick reflexes. A crisis-prone salesperson often has difficulty in following a structured territory plan.

The Crisis style of territory routing allows for great flexibility and for quick reaction to opportunities and problems.

However, crisis-prone salespeople have a tendency to call on accounts -- large or small -- without sufficient analysis regarding whether they really need to handle the so-called crisis immediately, and to do so in person.

Calling by Milk Route In the Milk Route style people arrange their calls in sequence and visit all accounts with the same frequency. While this is efficient in utilising travel time, it is very costly in terms of allocating calls according to yield. You should visit the highyield accounts more frequently and allocate fewer calls to low-potential accounts.

Calling by Priority While the Milk Route and Crisis styles are useful in special situations, the best method for consistent and effective territory management is the Priority style. That is by allocating calls according to account potential.

Priority call allocation will enhance your coverage and enable you to allocate your calls according to where you get the best return on your call investment.

This is the preferred style because it helps ensure that you put your time and energy toward those accounts most likely to yield the greatest sales results.

Identifying hazards is a first step in ensuring a safe working environment, but the reforms were also about instilling a risk management culture within workplaces. This means just listing hazards without assessing the level of risk to people will no longer cut the mustard.

The District Court has recently issued a judgment against Wellington Electricity Limited and North Power. Each company was charged under section 163D of the Electricity Act 1992 (intentionally or negligently causing or permitting work to be done in a manner dangerous to life).

Wellington Electricity Limited was fined $26,000, Northpower was fined $30,000. The two companies had previously voluntarily paid the worker $20,000 following a restorative justice hearing.

Wellington Electricity was ordered to pay a further $4,030 and Northpower a further $6,000 in reparations to the worker, bringing total reparations to the worker to $30,030.

According to WorkSafe, Wellington Electricity engaged Northpower to carry out maintenance work on roadside transformers in the Wellington region.

Two Northpower employees were working in Karori on 27 May, 2014, when a bracket fell onto live contacts causing an electrical short, resulting in a flashover. The victim sustained serious burns that required specialist treatment from the burns unit.

WorkSafe noted that the companies’ failures included: a work plan that lacked clear instructions to prompt workers to stop if they encountered increased risks or conditions that were different to what was in the work plan; not shutting off the power before any maintenance work was undertaken at this site; and not documenting their hazard assessments in one place, such as the work plan that was available to the workers.

WorkSafe’s chief inspector, Keith Stewart, was quoted as saying in a media release that “Incidents such as this should not happen. Working near live components is a well-known hazard in the industry, and risks should be appropriately managed to protect the workers.”

This case was heard under different legislation to the current legislation. My bet is that under the current laws as they stand, those companies would have faced much heftier fines.

So, if you have workers who are or could be exposed to electrical hazards, have you drawn up a comprehensive work safety plan that includes when workers must stop work?

Often this is down to inadequate resources and the huge number of thefts from employees.

There is an easier way. Instead of worrying about prosecuting a fraudulent employee, why not put in place some procedures, protocols and protection to minimise, or even eradicate the possibility of being stolen from in the first place?

The statistics for in-house employee theft is nothing short of staggering and it costs employers some very serious money.

Sadly, most sit on the sidlines thinking; “Oh it will never happen to me, Nigel and Cathy are honest employees”.

Sometimes they are correct and often they are not.

To implement a best practice workplace is not only common sense, but good value as well.

It creates a level playing field that can minimise risk to your business and should help owners sleep better at night.

Having great internal controls can also provide a workplace where employees are above suspicion.

This can create a more harmonious work environment and bring better comradery and cohesion with team members.

If you’re not sure what procedures, policies and protocols are needed, then you can always get in a consultant to discuss and help design some agreed upon procedures, document them and then test that they actually work.

It’s like a mini audit, but is geared towards adding real value and enhancing systems.

There are obvious areas to check such as cash handling, payroll, banking, invoicing, duplicating creditors, to name but a few - but often overlooked areas, like ordering and stock control, are ripe for picking and theft.

Many of these risks can be reduced or removed entirely, but it takes a structured plan.

A quick potential warning sign is where you have an employee that never takes annual leave, or only takes a day here and a day there.

This is often as they need to be onsite to keep their theft under wraps.

Testing that the systems work is another important part and typically we recommend at least an annual test and check-up.

Agreed upon procedures and internal dry audits just make sense in our opinion.

If not, then you most probably are not compliant.

Making PR work for you When I was a journalist, my colleagues and I used to talk about public relations consultants as having gone to the dark side.

PR was a place where people could dwell in the murky depths of defending the indefensible, or stuffing glitter into envelopes to make sure the recipients of their latest promo really noticed them.

How to pay tax, lose it and then have to pay it again Believe it or not, but this happens quite often.

Probably the biggest and most common tax mistake made is losing imputation credits i.e. the benefit a shareholder gets from tax already paid by the company.

PR has been around since the beginning of the last century, but the role of the industry in improving understanding and helping companies and people to be heard, has become much better understood in the last 20-30 years - even amongst journalists.

What is imputation?

It is a mechanism that a company can use to pass on credits for tax it has paid on its profits, to its shareholders when it pays them dividends. These credits offset the amount of tax that a resident shareholder would otherwise be liable to pay on those dividends so they don’t have to pay “double tax”.

If you are thinking of employing a public relations consultant or consultancy, there are a few things to consider to ensure they have the knowledge and experience to give you the advice you need.

As an example - let’s say your company made $100,000 profit and paid tax at the company tax rate of 28 percent, which of course would be $28,000.

Firstly, the lead consultant needs to have completed qualifications in PR, whether that is international accreditation in public relations or a university degree in communications, or preferably both.

Public relations practitioners who have recently made the switch from journalism and not had any formal training are still learning the ropes. If people are going to hang a sign on the door and call themselves consultants, I believe it is essential they know the theory behind what they do everyday and have a full complement of tools for their clients.

Experience is also vital for public relations consultants.

It is all very well to know the theory behind managing a reputational crisis, but there is absolutely nothing like being in amongst it.

It’s not until you have a portfolio of well-managed issues up your sleeve that you can honestly start to predict what the next twist or turn might be.

A good understanding of public relations ethics is essential - not only to keep the consultant safe but also to protect the clients they are working with. The Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) has a code of ethics covering everything from advocacy and honesty to conflicts of interest, professionalism, balancing openness and privacy, and the need to be law abiding.

Other things to consider when engaging a PR consultant or consultancy include their areas of specialization, references and testimonials from past and present clients, how they charge, and any potential conflicts with other clients.

Choosing the right PR consultancy will make a significant improvement to the way most businesses communicate, helping them to build mutually beneficial relationships with everyone that matters to them, including their customers, the public, their board of directors and staff.

This after-tax profit of $72,000 can be treated in three ways: (i) either kept in the company and used as working capital, (ii) paid out to shareholders as a dividend or, (iii) a combination of both.

If the after-tax profit stays in the company, there is no more tax to pay. However, if a dividend is declared and all the profit goes out to a shareholder, then the dividend is taxed at 33 percent; regardless of the income and tax rate of the shareholder.

In dollar terms, this is an extra $3,900 of tax.

However, if the shareholder is on a lower marginal tax rate, they will receive either a refund or a credit if they pay provisional tax when they file their tax return.

How do you lose imputation credits?

Quite simply (and we see it often) it’s all to do with the continuity of shareholders from one year to the next.

Because it’s so easy to file a company’s annual return online, or do a shared transfer online, many shareholders unwittingly lose (destroy is a better word) the imputation credit of 28 percent that they worked so hard to gain and then pay.

The immutable rule is that companies must maintain a minimum of 66 percent of the same shareholding from one year to the next.

If there is a change in continuity of shareholding of 34 percent or greater in any one-year period, starting from when the income tax is paid until the dividend is paid, then the most likely scenario is that the tax credits will be lost.

For ever! And that’s painful.

What’s the takeaway here?

The gender pay gap blame game Gender pay gap. Are you over it? I am all for equality, however, I struggle with this ongoing idea of blame.

I recently had a 62-year-old male ask me for advice on securing a new executive-level role, as he was continuously being challenged about his age and he is nearing retirement.

He would also add that he felt gender equality was part of his struggle with some organisations looking to add balance to their leadership teams.

There has to be a balance, but most importantly there must be transparency in the process, not only for this guy, but for all of us.

I am often invited to speak at women-only events, which provides a great environment for like-minded women to share their views and network. However, I wonder how I would feel if there was an event I wanted to attend which was restricted by age or ethnicity. We need to be mindful of the picture we paint in our race for equality.

I have no intention of questioning the progress made in recent years when it comes to gender equality and I agree we have a long way to go.

In trying to resolve it, it helps to understand how we got here. What is the precedent? How did women become involved in paid employment?

We were never officially invited to be equal employees; it was a stop-gap during war. There wasn’t a thought about equality, rates of pay, or women remaining once all the men came home. The world simply had a labour shortage and women were the solution. There lies the problem and with some reflection, precedent could get us out of it.

Research from the Ministry for Women tells us that causes of the gender pay gap are complex. Around 20 percent of the gender pay gap was due to differences in education, the occupations and industries that men and women work in.

That means the majority, 80 percent, of the gender pay gap is now driven by unexplained factors.

Those factors are behaviour and attitudes, and once you gain the insight into how we got here, you have a better chance of putting it right. When the values of an organisation are things like integrity, respect, honesty and loyalty, and they still operate without transparency, surely that is the biggest roadblock to true equality.

Select your employees based on capability and desired behaviours. Precedent may well form part of the reason, but does not need to remain the excuse.

Before you make any changes to a company’s shareholding, check with your tax accountant.

The four keys to great delegation Even in small businesses, great delegation is a vital skill for any business person who wants to expand or increase turnover.

However, the problem is, very few have formal training in it.

One of the hardest things to learn when you first become responsible for other staff, is to get out of the way and let your staff get on with the job. Good delegators give their subordinates as much responsibility and authority as they are able to accept but at the same time maintain control.

Paradoxically, they increase their own power by sharing it with others.

A common mistake in delegation is passing work on too quickly and not setting enough relevant inspection points.

Many would-be delegators don’t realise it’s a four-stage process, not a single action. If you don’t work through each phase with your delegatee, at some point you’ll almost certainly have to backtrack.

The four stages of delegation: 1. Directive delegation Initially a new person needs clear instructions and lots of guidance, not the opportunity to use their initiative. They don’t know enough to need much support, so they won’t yet make many decisions.

Your behaviour therefore needs to be highly directive, rather than supportive. In fact, the level of support is quite low. There will also probably be quite a bit of positive correction and adjustment, depending on the complexity of the task.

2. Coaching-style delegation They start to understand the process. You encourage them to come with questions; you give plenty of explanations, continue to instruct, have lots of reviews, and also support them in learning and applying new skills and knowledge. You’ll be providing high levels of both direction and support.

3. Supportive delegation These folk now have a good grip on the process. You’re weaning both yourself and them off lots of ‘telling’ – direction is low. Instead, you mainly give them high support in making their decisions. Your role is to help where needed, review their actions and oversee results as they increase their level of responsibility.

4. High-level delegation Now you’re free! Your delegatee not only has an excellent understanding of the task, but they have the confidence to get on with the job. They can still come for help if they need it, but that’s a rare occurrence. You can now give only low support and low direction, and only need to review their work occasionally.

However, if you struggle to focus in large, open-plan offices, are easily distracted or have a more introverted personality, you may well enjoy that home-based space with fewer interruptions. You will likely be more productive, feel better about your workspace and enjoy the autonomy that comes with it.

But should employers be encouraging this option more?

Technological advances mean that these days your employees can work from virtually anywhere, but is it worth it?

Will encouraging people to work from home mean less office space required and potentially some cost savings for you?

Will you see improved or reduced productivity? Does less accountability mean it’s harder to keep people on task?

This will depend on your business model, the amount of autonomy you give staff, the type of work being performed and the people in your team - it’s never a ‘one size fits all’ option.

In terms of health and safety obligations, any employee who is expected to work from home has the same rights around having a safe workstation set up, good seating and lighting, as they do in a normal office setting.

Claim games Do you know what business expenses you can claim?

Claiming back expenses can be a tricky business and there a few sneaky tips that are always good to know.

For example - if you shout coffee for meeting purposes and decide to drink it at the café, you can only claim back 50 percent of the cost back - whereas if you order takeaway and have it at the office, you can claim 100 percent back. Takeaway coffees from here on out!

Six steps to flexibility

Our lives are becoming increasingly hectic. It’s been proven time and again when personal life is well looked after then productivity in the workplace goes up.

Understanding your employee’s individual needs and catering for them can often mean adding a level of flexibility to the workplace.

Every workplace is different and there will always be different strokes for different folks, but if heightened flexibility has been on your mind, here are a few tips that may help you get started.

1. Launch a test pilot Practice makes perfect. If you feel you are missing a level of flexibility in your workplace, but you don’t know how to approach it, look at how other people in your situation are handling it and give it a trial run. You will quickly find out what is working and what is not and can tweak it accordingly.

2. Accountability Set the tasks at hand with a deadline. This holds everyone accountable and ensures the work needing to be done is still getting done, but allows for a work/life balance. You gain trust in yourself when you feel trusted by employers.

There’s no point burying your head in the sand and expecting smooth sailing ahead, but by following steps five and six any hurdle will stay just that, a small hurdle.

5. Keep open communication “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to listen to your staff,” Sir Richard Branson told Mediaplanet. Be honest with each other and talk to your staff openly about what they are enjoying about the increased flexibility and their advice on any changes that need to be made. Employers will see things in a completely different way, so discussing these opinions

and ideas among your team will enable you to reach a new level of understanding.

6. Be understanding And on that note, be open to the ideas that are presented to you. Understand where your staff are coming from. When you feel valued it's second nature to do your best for those who make you feel that way.

Seven ways to improve your memory

“Mindfulness meditation has been reported to enhance numerous mental abilities, including rapid memory recall,” says Catherine Kerr of the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and the Osher Research Center, both of which are located at Harvard Medical School.

Mnemonic devices are simple techniques a person can use to help them improve their ability to remember something.

Some mnemonic techniques include:

2. Diet Studies suggest a diet rich in antioxidants, phytochemicals and B vitamins may promote improved cognitive function.

Phytochemical-rich foods in particular have been long believed to be effective at reversing age-related deficits in memory. Phytochemicals are compounds that are typically found in fruits, vegetables, grains, beans and other plants.

Foods containing phytochemicals that are said to improve memory include berries, avocado, fish, dark chocolate and eggs.

• Expressions: Creating expression is an equally popular and

• Ode/Rhyme: A bit of a hybrid technique, peculiar odes are not uncommon. For example, 30 days hath September.

3. Exercise A study published in PubMed – the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) – has shown that in both rat and human brains, regular exercise can improve memory recall. In particular, regular exercise can improve cognitive abilities and spatial memory.

4. Sleep Memory consolidation is a distinct process that occurs during sleep to maintain, strengthen and modify memories stored in the long-term memory.

In one study, participants were separated into two groups and asked to memorise illustrated cards to test their memory strength. After memorising a set, both groups took a 40-minute break wherein one group napped, and the other stayed awake.

After the break, both groups were tested on their memory of the cards – the group who had napped performed significantly better, retaining on average 85 percent of the patterns, compared to 60 percent for those who had remained awake.

6. Learn a second language Adults who speak more than one language are likely to have a better working memory and memorisation skills. Learning a second language is said to increase brain size and connectivity (aka increase your intelligence), improve cognitive skills and overall brain function, and even protect your brain against aging.

A familiar scenario for many is remembering the lyrics to your favourite song from 10 years ago but forgetting what item you popped down to the shops for.

According to Scientific American, the “doorway effect” exists genetically in every single one of us.

A team of researchers from the University of Notre Dame – Gabriel Radvansky, Sabine Krawietz and Andrea Tamplin – established that “memory was worse after passing through a doorway than after walking the same distance within a single room.”

Called the encoding specificity principle, psychologists have known for a while that memory works best when the context during testing matches the context during learning.

Radvansky et al call this sort of memory representation an “event model” – walking through a doorway is a good time to purge your event models because whatever happened in the old room is likely to become less relevant now that you have changed venues.

Listening is fine but playing an instrument is even better – kids who learn to play an instrument develop better memories and higher IQs than kids with no musical training.

Those with high EI know how to build strong relationships based on mutual trust and respect and understand that, without emotional intelligence, relationships invariably suffer.

IQ is a threshold competence. You need it, but it doesn’t make you a star - emotional intelligence can.

Like the gift that keeps on giving, a single piece of advice that Martz Witty’s father imparted on him has steered Martz through a succession of businesses, a divorce and two retirement attempts, to the head of an empire he built from scratch.

The piece of advice in question? That it’s the journey, not the destination. And as Martz adds, “Destinations have a habit of being a moveable feast, which is just terrific!”

You schmoose, you most-certainlydo-not lose When I arrived at the new offices of the Martz Group I expected a hospitable reception, but had I known what I was stepping into, I would have arrived a lot earlier.

Things were off to a great start when I was presented with an elaborate drinks menu to peruse. I chose a Coke, as many a millennial would, and it was delivered on a tray accompanied by a snack-size packet Tim Tam. Coke and Tim Tams literally delivered on a platter – had somebody tipped them off?

No, they hadn’t. This calibre of hospitality is what the Martz Group has become renowned for and why employees and clients alike genuinely look forward to their time spent with the Group.

Any good businessperson knows that good hospitality extends to more than just the present moment – it has a lasting, direct result on personal and professional attitudes and ergo, on the success of the businesses those persons attach themselves to.

Don’t make the mistake of confounding Martz’s fervour for fun as unprofessional, though.

Martz has long been proud of New Zealand’s rich cultural history and in 2005 he began learning Te Reo Maori through Te Wananga O Aotearoa, and in 2014 he achieved TARM Level 5.

Right now the global business landscape is enduring one of its more volatile periods, where the merger of automation with traditional manual processes is threatening many roles within many fields, and many businesses themselves.

There’s a lot to be learned from making mistakes in business and in the midst of a technical revolution, it’s costly to not adopt change.

Sure, early adoption runs the risk of not quite being the right fit at the right time, but at least it’s proof if your customers ever needed it that you are looking toward the future, you are willing to embrace change, and you’re excited about how you can continue to develop your business’ capabilities to offer your clients a service that either meets industry demand or paves the way for the rest of the industry.

Martz believes failed businesses generally sit in one of two categories: either they failed to evolve quickly enough, or they failed to evolve at all.

UP IN SMOKE Clearing the air about marijuana’s medical benefits

For years studies have purported to show that marijuana use has a wide range of ill health effects, but recent research has shown positive results in the field of medicinal use.

How can that be?

Marijuana, also known as cannabis, comes from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant. The plant contains the mind-altering chemical THC that acts on specific brain cell receptors that ordinarily react to natural THC-like chemicals.

These natural chemicals play a large role in brain development and function.

Marijuana is a psychoactive drug. Its ‘high’ can last up to 12 hours and can make people feel more relaxed, alter the senses and cause time distortion.

Unlike other illegal drugs, no one has ever been reported dead from a marijuana overdose.

Marijuana is not classed as addictive however it can lead to ‘substance use disorder’. Historical research has reported negative short-term health effects to include anxiety or paranoia and impaired thinking, judgement, co-ordination and memory.

Negative long-term effects have said to include breathing problems like coughing , excess mucus, bronchitis, and worsening of conditions like schizophrenia, asthma and cystic fibrosis. Marijuana use during pregnancy can also harm a baby’s brain development.

In the Ministry of Health’s Cannabis Use 2012/13: New Zealand Health Survey it found that eight percent of cannabis users reported a time in the last 12 months that cannabis use had a harmful effect on their mental health. Younger cannabis users were more affected, with reported harm to mental health decreasing markedly by age 55 plus.

On the other hand, further, more recent studies have shown marijuana can provide significant relief for pain and nausea, as well as well as helping to control epilepsy. It is not yet proven if marijuana is linked to lung cancer, but according to a study published in Journal of the American Medical Association in January 2012, marijuana does not impair lung function and can even increase lung capacity.

Another study, by Harvard, into the health effects of recreational and medical use concluded that, “Early research shows cannabidiol and its derivatives hold potential promise in additional conditions like drug-resistant epilepsy and some psychiatric disorders (e.g., anxiety, substance use disorders, schizophrenia, and psychosis).”

The drug has been steadily growing in popularity for medical applications and is now legal for medicinal purposes in at least 20 countries worldwide.

So here we are: some scientific studies conclude that marijuana use is harmful, others claim it to be a medical 18 | October 2017 www.canterburytoday.co.nz

miracle. A recently-concluded New Zealand longitudinal study, conducted in part by researchers at Duke University, appears to finally clear the air.

“It [marijuana] doesn’t have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. In fact, sometimes marijuana is the only thing that works,” he wrote.

The study is perhaps the most comprehensive into the subject yet: it monitored a cohort of 1037 individuals, born in Dunedin in 1972 and 1973, over 38 years, testing whether cannabis use from age 13 to 38 was associated with health effects at 38. It assessed frequency of cannabis use and cannabis dependence at ages 18, 21, 26, 32 and 38 years.

In another recent study on twins, those who used marijuana showed a significant decline in general knowledge and in verbal ability, equivalent to four IQ points, between the preteen years and early adulthood. But no predictable difference was found between twins when one used marijuana and the other didn’t.

It found that the people who started smoking marijuana heavily in their teens, and had an ongoing marijuana use disorder, lost an average of eight IQ points between ages 13 and 38. The lost mental abilities didn’t fully return in those who quit marijuana as adults.

Interestingly, those who started smoking marijuana as adults didn’t show notable IQ declines, indicating that heavy or long term marijuana users only suffer poor mental abilities if they began using before their brain had developed in full.

It concluded that “Cannabis use for up to 20 years is associated with periodontal disease but is not associated with other physical health problems in early midlife”.

This is not the only notable New Zealand study on the matter. The World Health Organisation in 1998 released a report that agreed with the New Zealand Ministry of Health’s report Cannabis: the public health issues 1995-1996 in acknowledging that the consumption of alcohol and tobacco are more harmful than the use of cannabis.

Neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, offers further explanation into the division on the matter.

In 2009 Gupta penned a TIME Magazine article entitled ‘Why I would vote No on Pot’, but recently while in the process of making his documentary Weed, he changed his stance from being anti- to pro-legalisation of cannabis in the medical field.

This suggests that the IQ decline in marijuana users may be caused by something other than marijuana, such as shared familial factors, for example, genetics and family environment.

In medicinal-specific studies, researchers have learnt there are at least two active chemicals in marijuana that they think have medicinal application. Those are cannabidiol (CBD) — which seems to impact the brain without a high — and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — which has pain relieving properties.

Public opinion is congruent with recent, further research showing positive results in the field of medicinal marijuana.

The New Zealand Drug Foundation’s August 2017 poll showed support is growing for a cannabis law reform.

The poll was conducted by National Party pollsters Curia and showed that overall, 81 percent of voters supported allowing medical cannabis for patients with terminal illnesses.

It remains a somewhat divisive topic for New Zealand leaders, however. At the first leaders’ debate, Labour leader Jacinda Arden took all of three seconds to say her party would absolutely look at legalising marijuana for medicinal use.

“We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologise for my own role in that,” he told CNN in an interview.

Prime Minister Bill English, who has up until now claimed he’s happy with New Zealand’s current cannabis laws, used his full 30 seconds to state that National would be happy with more liberal access to medicinal marijuana, but in the form of controlled cannabinoid products that have passed clinical trials, just as every other government-approved drug must do.

He found in a search of medical studies from the past year that only six percent investigated potential benefits of the drug, rather than its harms.

One thing is for certain: comprehensive research continues on the matter and will only add depth to a growing portfolio of studies offering accurate and insightful results. CT

Focus | Crowne Plaza Christchurch Fresh design approach The stunning end result was nothing more than ideas and concepts when Aucklandbased design agency Designworks started with a blank canvas for the hotel’s interior design.

From the outset they aimed to bring a new, creative energy not only to the hotel, but the heart of the city.

Designworks focused on delivering a creative guest experience based around being welcomed into the property, and how that flowed into relaxation, eating and working across the entire hotel.

“Our brief was to create a premium 4.5-star hotel experience that put a ‘fresh spin’ on the Crowne Plaza brand as well as making it work locally, and to ignite the theatre and drama of the nearby Performing Arts Precinct,” says architect Naomi Rushmer.

“As the city’s largest hotel, attracting locals and those from across the globe, the design needed to deliver an exciting and unique experience maximising 360-degree views of the Port Hills, Southern Alps and Pacific Ocean.”

On arrival at the hotel, guests are greeted with a boldly-crafted interior featuring timber slats wrapping the walls, accentuating height and anchoring the lobby space.

A large freeform mesh ceiling feature glows over the reception pods, inspired by the winding Avon River. The space connects to the adjacent Social Wine Bar through a striking doubled-sided central fireplace.

That impressive fireplace adds real drama and mood to the space, and is a drawcard for all with its inviting plush seating and gorgeous rugs. Full-height windows flood the ground floor with natural daylight, and dramatic lighting brings the spaces to life, changing mood and atmosphere, as dusk falls.

A grand open staircase connects to first floor dining, library and meeting rooms, and feature carpets and rugs draw inspiration from the braided rivers and topography of the South Island.

breads of europe Owning and operating a wholesale bakery was a long-standing ambition for talented baker Brian Cook, and with his wife Lydia Schroder by his side, this dream became a reality in October 2015.

Luckily business ownership was not new to either of them, in fact it was because of the success from their previous bakery, Una Bakery in Huntsbury, that they found themselves as the new owners of Breads of Europe, Lydia explains.

“We needed another baker at Una Bakery and Brian heard through one of our reps that Breads of Europe had a baker available. After meeting with the operations manager, Brian found out that the previous owners were looking for a quick sale.”

Dalman Architects Studio Dalman Architects’ flagship studio is clad with timber battens of various widths that represent the ancient totara forest that used to inhabit the area.

A full height, red pivoting door on the Colombo Street side opens into an exhibition space. At the centre of the office is the ‘Totara Room’; a space fully lined inside and out with totara tongue and groove boards, creating a warm texture against the slate-coloured tile floor.

Hohepa delivers independence, purpose and pride For over 50 years Hohepa has been creating opportunities for people with an intellectual disability in Canterbury.

The organisation offers services and support for adults with an intellectual disability – from computer classes, to getting their hands dirty on a farm, to providing a place to live.

“Our focus is on getting people involved in the community, doing things they like. It is hugely varied - no two days are ever the same and we ensure people keep growing as individuals,” says Hohepa Canterbury’s general manager Arnah Trelease.

Nestled at the foot of the Port Hills, the Barrington Street campus offers many educational, sporting and cultural activities.

Nine kilometres away, the Halswell farm provides a wonderful rural environment.

At Barrington, activities include: cycling, music, bread baking, preserves, arts and crafts, exploring Maori culture and current affairs.

Fitness rooms are very popular and a range of therapies include massage, art, eurythmy (movement therapy), and speech and drama.

For those who enjoy singing, there is a choir and performances are provided on special occasions. Barrington also supports a mix of houses and flats, with some houses nearby in the community.

At the Halswell Farm, tunnel houses are full of thriving flowers and vegetables, and give people a chance to get their hands dirty.

As well as gardening, the farm has chickens and a community garden with raised beds and wheelchair access so it is a place for everyone to enjoy. This campus also supports seven residential homes, the Gaia Activity Centre and hobby gardens.

General manager Arnah Trelease has been with Hohepa Canterbury for 18 months and says she has always worked within the disability sector, whether volunteering while still at school or working for different organisations throughout New Zealand.

However, in recent roles she has moved away from a hands-on experience. “I took this role

because it brings me closer to influencing the lives of people with disabilities.”

Arnah is also closely involved with New Zealand’s other Hohepa branches in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and Kapiti, as the organisation works towards bringing the regions together.

Dementia service Each region has its strengths, and Hohepa Canterbury has developed a dementia service. Hohepa is the only provider in Canterbury offering a specialised service for intellectually disabled people with dementia.

This is a vital service and includes support for people with dementia, many of whom have Downs Syndrome and are at higher risk of developing the condition.

Support contract Canterbury also offers flexible support as part of a contract aimed at school leavers and other people with individualised funding packages.

Currently nine people have a support contract where they buy the services they need from the organisation.

Fonterra Clandeboye - a project of significance Fonterra is well on the way to being able to meet the increasing global demand for mozzarella, as the Clandeboye site expansion passes half way.

The new $240 million plant will increase Fonterra’s capacity to produce its revolutionary individual quick frozen (IQF) mozzarella.

The new plant is the single biggest foodservice investment in New Zealand dairy history and, upon completion, will make Fonterra Clandeboye the largest producer of natural mozzarella in the Southern Hemisphere.

Spanning more than 9,000 square metres, the new plant is 30 percent bigger than the previous one. This comes with economic benefits for Canterbury, with more than 1,000 people across a huge range of industries involved in the build.

Fonterra Clandeboye operations lead, Chris Turner says the new mozzarella plant will employ 94 people and a further 18 joining the co-op in other roles across the site to support the new plant.

The recruitment process is ongoing at Clandeboye, adding to the current 865 staff members who are helping take Fonterra’s dairy to more than 70 different markets around the world.

“We have already identified half of the new team, and are continuing to recruit, with the

goal of identifying the remaining employees by early September,” Chris says.

The new jobs, coupled with local pride for the mozzarella, will bring positive changes to the Canterbury region, flowing right through to the community where the dairy industry already employs almost 10,000 people.

Full commercial production of the highly sort after cheese is set to begin by September 2018.

Sixty percent of the main building is now complete, with the roof expected to be on

by October.

Chris says the new plant will double current onsite processing capacity of Mozzarella cheese, making enough to top more than half a billion pizzas every year.

“We’re expanding our plant at Clandeboye to help meet growing demand for our cheese, which is fast becoming the pizza cheese of choice in China and across wider Asia.”

Aoraki Development chief executive, Nigel Davenport says “Fonterra has a massive waterfall effect throughout our district’s economy. From milk pay-outs to farmers,

to employing hundreds of people directly, there are also dozens of local contractor or supplier companies that are also benefiting from the boom in mozzarella exports.

“It means our region can continue to expand and offer a wide range of jobs. The 112 additional people who, will be hired for the mozzarella plant, will bring many new families to our beautiful part of the country.”

The site processes up to 12.4 million litres of milk per day, filling 10,000 shipping containers every year of creams, cheese, protein, milk powders – enough to fill 113 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

These containers contribute in no small way to the $2.2 billion that the dairy industry contributes to Canterbury each year, only set to increase with the rise in mozzarella supply. >

Delivering an economic injection

Dairying in various forms has been a big part of the Timaru District and wider South Canterbury Region for over 120 years.

In fact, there has been a dairy factory on the same Clandeboye site since 1904.

Ongoing investment of Fonterra has added significant value to our local economy both from the direct capital spend, but also the trickle down or the more appropriately named 'waterfall effect' not only locally but throughout the wider South Island.

With the Timaru District having a population of 47,000 residents and 25,000 of those in our workforce – the dairy industry (processing and on farm) accounts for over 1,800 workers,

or more than seven percent of the district’s total workforce.

Getting big projects on the move Harmer Earthmoving takes on giant projects – such as the groundwork for entire irrigation schemes and dairy conversions.

With such big projects, the company needed to expand and now has a crew of nearly 40 who firmly believe in getting the job done.

Based in Methven, Harmer Earthmoving was founded in 2008. Following expansion in recent years, the business is now made up of three complementary brands: earthmoving, logging and Mt Hutt Lime.

Earthmoving is the main part of the business, and employs about 38 people, working on projects throughout the whole of Canterbury.

Recent irrigation projects have been completed for Amuri Irrigation, MHV Water, and BCI Scheme. However, the team turns its hand to all jobs, specialising in forestry work, land conversions, landfill, effluent ponds and systems, irrigation and dams, subdivision and roading, mining and civil works.

“We can do anything from dairy conversions to irrigation pipelines, large building sites and land clearance. We’ll take on just about anything,” says owner Jon Harmer.

“We do all the groundwork. For example, we will take on an entire project such as an irrigation scheme, do all the installations, set

it all up and subcontract all the civil contractors as well.

“We harness our local knowledge and expertise to deliver innovative earthmoving solutions which get the job done.”

The company will also act as project manager, dealing with the operations on large building sites. Harmer Earthmoving and Logging has an extensive range with over 50 pieces of plant and machinery.

“Our fleet of trucks, trailers, diggers, dozers, graders, skidders, loaders and dumpers enable us to get the job done in the most efficient manner. All plant and equipment is maintained in excellent condition and we have a full service workshop to complete all planned and required maintenance.”

Jon continues to work closely with his father, who founded the business. “I bought the excavators and trucks, he kept the bulldozers, and we now co-own Mt Hutt Lime Ltd, but we still work together in all aspects of the job.”

Harmer Logging Harmer Logging runs two logging crews which deliver a range of logging and support

services. One crew, with four employees, is fully mechanical and handles large plantations and large woodlots.

The other crew of three is set up for larger trees, and deals with smaller plantations and precision felling.

The choice of logging system, used to fell trees and remove the logs, is dictated by factors such as the size of the area to be harvested, access to the site, the slope of the land and the type of soil.

A great way to realise potential Canterbury Swim School is much more than just a swim school; their approach to swimming is holistic and the skills gained will last a lifetime.

Director Jennifer (Jenny) Jones sums it up when she says everyone enjoys something different and when participants offer rave reviews no two are the same.

presented with Service Awards for their contribution to the sport.

Chris Hurley is also a director of the company, bringing with him comprehensive business skills and expertise to the swim school.

Huia and Jenny’s years of coaching/teaching experience has allowed them to develop a unique swimming programme, which has led to many of their participants competing not only at national level, but at international level also.

“Our motto is ‘puawai’, which is ‘realising potential’. We believe everyone has potential and it’s up to us to help them realise it. It may be in swimming, or it may just be developing their confidence, so our programmes are tailored to each individual,” Jenny says.

Trenchless technology - no dig, no mess, no problem Underground Brown is an innovative South Island company which delivers a range of trenchless services to a diverse client base, primarily in the Canterbury region, and elsewhere l when required.

The demand for these services has steadily increased over the last 25 years.

The company was founded 25 years ago by Tony and Vicky Brown, after Tony had gained experience with early trenchless technology in underground utility installation techniques during his career with the NZPO and Telecom.

The company was the first to complete a directional drilling job in the South Island and things just took off after that.

Given that directional drilling, globally, is a relative infant at around 30 odd years old, Underground Brown (UGB) has seen, tried, tested, used and trialed all the various new and different variations of both drilling machinery, hardware and location systems available over the years.

The company now employs around 100 people with very little turnover of staff as it is relentless in keeping up with technology so the crews are using the best available on the market at all times, along with training to match. UGB is possibly the largest directional drilling resource in the South Island with 14 operational drilling rigs.

No job is too big or to small; UGB can put an irrigation pipe under your path at home, or undertake large infrastructure installations such as a rising sewer main in Riccarton, where the installation of the five-meter deep pipe has just been successfully completed on time and with no problems.

The pipe was installed over 1,500 meters of 450mm diameter pipe in lengths up to 180 meters at a time. This contract required the purchase of a new drill to meet the high specification of the installation.

To date UGB has not engaged too heavily in the post-earthquake rebuild, but as contractors from other parts of the country return home with the end of SCIRT, the company has been called on to join some infrastructure repair and replacement work.

After 25 years, the company has many strong contacts and relationships in the industry, and recently signed a contract with City Care New Zealand Ltd, to provide trenchless services throughout the whole of the country, in conjunction with five other companies, to assist in servicing their many water maintenance contracts nation-wide.

“A lot of people in other companies found the UFB environment was very difficult to make the numbers work, but we have survived through being innovative and we are looking forward to seeing the project through to completion some time next year,” Tony Brown says.

The company primarily uses Veneer drilling gear, supplied by AB Equipment, a New Zealand-wide company and a choice made because of their attention to detail and customer focused service.

After 30 years, the company has built up a stellar reputation, and won many House of the Year awards. While much of its work comes from referrals, new clients and projects are always welcomed.

As to the many awards, Mike believes it reflects the company’s efforts to always provide a good honest job with attention to detail and excellent communication.

It takes a long time to build up the sort of reputation M O Builders enjoys. Mike’s father started the company in 1974 as O.R.Brown Builders, offering building labour only, with Mike then as a 16 year-old apprentice and one other, and Mike has defined it and expanded it over the last 30 years.

The growth has occurred naturally as the company took on larger scale projects, and

Mike now employs a staff of 12, while his wife, Lisa, helps out in the office.

Communication is always important with any building project, and the company is careful to employ top-quality staff who will fit in with the team and get on well with clients.

Staff turnover is low, with one employee having been employed with the company for over 17 years, and another two for over 10 years. “Our staff all know each other well, and all get on well and know what’s expected. They are all good at communicating with clients.”

Delivering ‘in the trench’ experience The team at CB Civil and Drainage boasts more than 25 years of experience in the civil contracting industry, including all aspects of drainage, sheet piling, well-point dewatering, site works and minor civil structures.

CB Civil and Drainage has been working hard assisting in Kaikoura to clear slips, re-align railways, build retaining walls and new road corridors to get the state highway open.

Back in 2014/15, CB Civil and Drainage completed an award winning renewal of the Sumner Scarborough stormwater and wastewater networks. The scope of work included the renewal of more than three kilometres of stormwater and wastewater infrastructure from 100mm to 375mm using PVC, PE, concrete pipes, and manhole/sump structures to 3m deep, including well-point de-watering and sheet piling.

“This project presented several challenges such as deep excavations up to five metres, wellpoint dewatering, severely damaged existing infrastructure, and extremely difficult site access whilst maintaining access for residents,” says CB Civil and Drainage managing director, Jamie Campbell.

“Our team also had to deal with unforeseen asbestos pipe removal. While the removal was subcontracted out, our team did an excellent job of identifying the risks and keeping the main contractor informed.”

He says overall good communication and forward planning were all essential elements in mitigating the risks involved in this project.

“Our team’s collaborative approach and technical ability ensured that, despite these challenges, we were able to deliver this project safely, on time, to specification, and within budget. We also won the Fulton Hogan Environmental Award for this project.”

A project recently completed in Bishopdale provided many challenges for CB Civil and Drainage, such as poor ground conditions, strong existing flows, concrete encased existing services, and a tight timeframe for project completion.

“The site was narrow, and managing this required detailed programming and planning.

In order to meet the tight timeframe, we utilised two crews.”

In its annual year-end business review, Christchurch-based human resource and recruitment firm Decipher Group revealed that more than 37 percent of all senior management and executive level placements were for positions within the utility services sector.

Utility services refer to organisations that provide services consumed by the public, including electricity, natural gas, water and sewage. Broadband internet service providers are also included in the definition.

Decipher Group’s recruitment service is usually dominated by requirements from Canterbury’s strong manufacturing industry, but this year employment needs in utility services topped manufacturing’s senior staffing demand by 19 percent. Executive positions in agribusiness and technology also

AI, collaborative consumption and climate change Artifical intelligence, driverless cars, the shared economy and climate change are disrupting the future of New Zealand cities, according to internationally renowned planning experts.

The challenge for local authorities and citizens is adapting to these advancements, claim urban futurist and former Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Stephen Yarwood, and highly respected landscape architect Professor Elizabeth Mossop.

The pair both spoke at the New Zealand Planning Institute’s (NZPI) annual conference titled Changing Places last April.

Mossop’s presentation focused on ‘Landscapes of Urban Resilience’, while Yarwood talked about ‘Urban Disruption and Contemporary Change – how the hell do you plan for the unknown?’.

The pizzas too conjure up echoes of young men in historic flying machines – the Harvard, the de Havilland, the Orion, the Mustang, the Corsair and the Hawker.

The chefs in The Good Home’s kitchen are kept busy with lunch and dinner patrons as the restaurant opens at 11.00am each day. They are in the process of devising a new summer menu from fresh seasonal produce which will be perfect for alfresco dining in the large northfacing courtyard that is well protected from Christchurch’s pesky winds.

A home though is more than food alone. It is a place to socialise, to be with friends and to enjoy watching sport. All of these activities are catered for at The Good Home in the individual spaces within the venue as a whole.

They are spaces for you to feel at ease in and to call your own. There’s outdoor seating off both the ground and mezzanine levels; there are two bars offering an enticing cocktail list and the increasingly popular craft beers, and there’s sport on the various big screens.
