WELCOME TO MY WEDDING MAGAZINE’S FIRST EDITION FOR 2023.
In this issue we look into Central Otago’s wedding venues and accommodation, New Zealand designed wedding dresses, tips and advice on preparing for your wedding, a luxurious honeymoon spot in the North Island, flower arrangements, hidden voices of flowers, reception ideas, interview with a celebrant, and real couple stories.
We focused on Central Otago for its wedding venues and accommodation because the district is known for its beautiful scenery of the mountains and pristine blue water. Plus, you can’t beat Central Otago’s wine – perfect for special occasions such as weddings.
These stories will help brides, grooms and wedding goers prepare for the big day in a beautiful venue with breath-taking scenery. These ideas will help encourage people on where they might want to have a wedding, where they want to go for their honeymoon, what sort of flowers they need, what various flowers mean, and get inspiration from an Aotearoa celebrant and wedding couples.
We thank our columnists for their knowledge and input as well as everyone else who contributed and showed interest in featuring.
Enjoy!

Mountain magic

Central Otago is home to some absolutely magical locations with its unique backdrops and heritage buildings. It is also home to plenty of accommodation and attractions. There are magnificent views, adrenaline filled attractions, delicious wines and sumptuous food.

Perhaps the most alluring aspect of Central Otago are the views. It’s a region steeped in breathtaking scenery. There are so many stunning locations to take some extremely memorable wedding photos.
For example, “The Wanaka Tree” is an iconic location and has been the subject of many an international photograph. Or, perhaps, the jutting peaks and bush-clad slopes of Mount Aspiring.
Maybe you prefer a mountainous view atop Coronet Peak where you can watch the rest of the world swirl below you. There is no end to the vast range of spectacular views in Central Otago.
Even just visiting some local lookouts can bring both inspiration and enjoyment.
Lake Hawea Lookout offers a stunning and unparalleled view of the lake while Nugget Point Lighthouse showcases the epic nature of the ocean.
From golden grasses to dense bush, sparkling lakes to roaring seas and windswept valleys to snowy mountains, Central Otago is a hub of utterly majestic views.
However, the magnificent views aren’t all Central
Otago is known for. Central Otago is a wellestablished wine region in New Zealand and is the world’s southernmost wine producing region.
Known best for its Pinot Noir, the region also offers many tasty wines including Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Its Pinot Noir is strongly scented and locals often refer to it as the “Fear of France.”
With 133 wineries in the area, there are plenty to choose from, whether you’re looking for a pre-wedding get away, something to entertain guests or a wine provider.
There are several open cellar doors in Central Otago such as Aurum Wines, Kinross and Maude Wines. Aurum Wines also offers luxury accommodation.
Wine tours are also a great way to explore the wines of Central Otago. Companies such as Roaring Wine Tours offer a unique perspective into the wineries within the region. Roaring Wine Tours are guides by wine industry professionals and travel to boutique vineyards.
Food often goes hand in hand with wine and Central Otago brings them both together in a delightful array of restaurants and eateries.
Home to a massive selection of cherries and stone fruit, the region is also well known for its colourful fruit stalls
and local farmers markets. Central Otago is also home to world class saffron and offer free tours for people to learn about this exotic spice.
Within this diverse region are many different pubs and bistros that offer everything from a casual night out to a full restaurant experience.
Talented chefs and cooks bring the flavours and experiences of Central Otago right to your plate, highlighting the diversity and intrigue the region has to offer.
Central Otago hosts everything from pubs and bistros, takeaways and casual dining, cafes and bars, wineries and breweries and so much more.
After the alluring natural beauty of the landscapes and the sheer decadence of Central Otago’s food and wine, you might be thinking that seems like plenty of excellence for one
region. Well, Central Otago also offers thrilling and adrenaline-filled experiences.
Queenstown hosts three major ski fields within a short distance of one another –The Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Cardrona. Hit the slopes in the winter and feel the rush of sailing along the skyline of Central Otago.
Perhaps skydiving is more your style. Skydive Wanaka offers the thrill of freefalling from up to 15,000 feet and reaching speaks of 200kmps!
If falling through the air is a bit much for you, there’s also bungee jumping at AJ Hackett Bungee. Or you could even feel the speed and adrenaline of the Shotover Jet.
From views and thrills to wine and food, there’s plenty of venues and things to keep you occupied in Central Otago during your wedding event.

The Rippon Hall
The Rippon Hall sits atop Rippon Hill, surrounded by spectacular views. The natural amphitheatre offers views out of the vines to Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps, which makes this location a prime spot for an outdoor wedding.
This location was thirty years in the making and born out of the land upon which it stands. The walls are made from compacted earth dug from the Rippon hillside, the
trusses and beams are built from timber from the local larch forest and the boiler warms the building with wood taken from the farm. The farm has been cared for by four generations of the same family for over 100 years.
There is a main hall, which is an ideal location for small to mid-sized weddings, which seat 80-90 guests comfortably. This makes a fantastic wet-weather option and makes a great dance floor. There’s also a fixed canopy adjacent to the main hall and can accommodate up to 230 guests for a seated dinner.

WWW.MYWEDDINGMAG.CO.NZ | 31
WEDDING DATE: 4th March, 2022
COUPLE: Felicity and Riley Haymes
LOCATION: Tauranga
CEREMONY VENUE: Local church
RECEPTION VENUE: Felicity’s parents’ backyard
FLOWERS: Silk flowers from Eyebright Nelson. (And arranged by a local florist)
DRESS: Madison Rose Bridal
SUIT: Nelson Tailors Menswear
HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Family friend
PHOTOGRAPHER: Siobhan Cox Photography
CATERERS: Happy Puku (Catering charitable trust who help provide jobs and life skills for those who are suffering from homelessness).
The couple met at a BBQ drinks night when Riley was visiting friends in the North Island. Mutual friends introduced the pair and a perfect couple of months into dating, the couple were engaged.
During a visit from Felicity’s best friend, Abby, they decided to take a visit to the beach where Riley was waiting to pop the question.
“It wasn’t until what felt like a minute later after I saw the ring, I realised what was happening!” says Felicity.
“Plus, Abby got the whole engagement on camera!”
The couple share a wedding date with Felicity’s parents. She says getting married on her parents’ 50th wedding anniversary was a sign of good luck.
“The day was perfect. The sun was out and there was a gentle breeze which was great for a summer’s day.”
WWW.MYWEDDINGMAG.CO.NZ | 33
The day was perfect. The sun was out and there was a gentle breeze which was great for a summer’s day
The couple had a spectacular backyard wedding, dressing her parents’ yard up for the event. Covid-19 restrictions meant the couple had to reschedule and plan their day differently to first expected.
“We decorated the place with fairy lights and had the ceremony at our church which was surrounded by native bush, an open clearing and the port.”
Felicity followed the traditional 19th Century inspired bridal rhyme with ‘something old, new, borrowed and blue’.
“Riley’s grandmother gave me one of her beautiful satin handkerchiefs as my ‘something old’.
“All throughout the day I was wiping my tears thinking about this beautiful sentiment from his grandmother.”
Felicity says her favourite moment from the day was doing a modern take on the ‘first look’, where a bride and groom take the time to see each other before the reception.
“One of my favourite moments was when Riley turned around and looked at me.
“We were on three acres of open land near a pond and all of our family stood at the
top of the hill and watched from afar,” she says.
These intimate moments are what made the day incredibly special and memorable for the couple.
Alongside the wedding day, Felicity says she also enjoyed the dress shopping experience.
“My Mum, Grandmother and friend all came along to dress shop with me. My dress happened to be the last dress I tried on and I knew it was the one!”
She says wedding dress shopping was an event she looked forward to her whole life and it was incredibly exciting to experience it.
“Walking down the aisle was overwhelming and exciting. I kept thinking to myself, don’t trip!” she laughs.
Small, intimate, backyard weddings are one way to celebrate your special day and make it personal.
Adding individual touches such as getting married on your parents’ anniversary is what made Felicity and Riley’s wedding unique to them.
The couple continue to remain in Tauranga, enjoying the blissful sunshine and beach walks to celebrate their love for each other.

wedding, where water and air temperatures remainin the high 20s all year-round.
This helps to bring you peace of mind when having an outdoor ceremony and also means you can hold your wedding in the typical New Zealand off-wedding season. Avoiding peak wedding season can often mean lower costs, less waiting and a better chance your guests will be able to make the trip.
Each of Fiji’s 330 islands have their own distinct personality and feature stunning natural wonders to fit any bridal style.
And the unparalleled natural beauty of this wonderous
archipelago is matched by its world-famous hospitality.
From the very moment you arrive, you’ll feel a warmth of welcome to match the natural beauty. Be prepared to be greeted at every turn with a lively “Bula!” - the Fijian greeting.
There really is no better place to celebrate the biggest event in your life.

Omana Luxury Villa
BY NATASHA PARRANT
Honeymoons are a special time and are just as special as the big wedding day. Wedding couples want to ensure they have an unforgettable getaway and go somewhere mesmerising.
Well, what better way to spend your honeymoon but in our beloved Aotearoa!
This issue’s honeymoon spot is located at Omana Luxury Villa in Waiheke Island.
According to an Auckland PR firm, Lily and Louis, Omana Luxury Villa’s co-owner Silmara Scholtz says honeymoons are wonderful and an exciting time.
“There are moments in life that are certainly more memorable than others, that’s why choosing the perfect location for a love celebration is incredibly important.”
Waiheke Island was named fifth in a New York magazine Travel + Leisure’s ‘The 15 Best Islands in the World in 2018’, surpassing places like Mauritius, the Galapagos Islands and the Greek island of Paros.
Waiheke Island was also listed in the top five in the magazine’s ‘The Best Islands in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific’ between 2016-2019 and made the top 10 in 2020 and 2021.
It’s clearly a popular destination for Aucklanders, Kiwis and international guests, especially for wedding goers.
The villa is designed to be a picture-perfect stay for wedding couples. There is native bush, the beautiful ocean and greenery surrounding guests, and it’s peaceful as it’s a 40 minute ferry ride from Auckland city.
Each villa offers views of the breath-taking ocean, local birds and Omana’s native forest reserve.
These villas are private, relaxing and there’s access to a private beach too – Woodside Bay waters.
While couples stay there, they can choose to do romantic activities together like water sports, romantic horse riding
and vineyard tours, and enjoy a romantic bathtub with each other at their accommodation while looking at the water.
These moments are memories for a lifetime!
Choose from four different villas, one offers spacious surroundings, another provides quality interiors on top of a hill, another has a mix of classic and modern look to it, and the other is luxurious and serene, all with the most gorgeous views of the water and island.
Enjoy a romantic getaway! Spend quality time with one another in the bathtub the boutique self-service villas offer, just the two of you, it’s so peaceful – no one can ruin the special moment.
Enjoy the amazing local cuisine and fine dining surrounding other couples on the island. There are lots of choices with even more recommendations suggested by Omana Luxury Villa staff if couples ask before they arrive.
Apart from the cuisine, outdoor activities and vineyards, if it’s a rainy day, couples can stay inside and be entertained by the view, flat-screen TV, temperature control bedroom with a super king-sized bed, and a massive bathtub.
Planning to go out and about? Hop into a taxi, executive transport, bus, bike, scooter, or a Segway.
If couples are feeling really fancy, they can choose to arrive in style via a helicopter.
There are also beautiful beaches, galleries and open-air art, activities like hiking, kayaking or SUP (Stand Up Paddleboards), and drinking wine of course!
Come for an unforgettable time with your loved one for your honeymoon!

Guiding light
WEDDING CELEBRANT HANNAH DUDER
BY MICHAELA POINTON
Hannah Duder is a 30-year-old wedding celebrant based in Canterbury. Since becoming a celebrant in 2017, Hannah has married over 100 couples.
When she is not working her own business as a project manager, she is travelling the country from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island uniting couples.
Since she was younger, she has always enjoyed organisation and admin work. During late 2017, Hannah’s sister needed a celebrant for her wedding and she saw this as a perfect opportunity to develop her knowledge.
Meeting, mixing and mingling with people in a group situation are Hannah’s strengths, the perfect skill-set for any celebrant.
“I really enjoy going out on the weekends to help
a couple and deliver a ceremony which is personal to them.”
Every ceremony she creates is as flexible and customised to the individual couple.
“As a celebrant, I consider small details such as where I am standing during the ceremony and how I speak.
“I’m really careful it’s not about me. I try to fade into the background once my job has been done.”
She suggests couples make sure they meet with their celebrant beforehand to ensure you will have a solid relationship on the day.
“Meet with your celebrant and have a coffee before the day to make sure you click.”
Making the ceremony personalised to you as a couple is what will make the day memorable and unique.
“The ceremony can be anything you want it to be.
“You don’t have to stand in a traditional bridal party line if you don’t want to, you can mix things up!
“I’ve had people pop champagne or cut cake during the ceremony. Couples should not feel restricted to a traditional ceremony style,” she says.
Hannah says being a celebrant is a large part of her life during summer, working closely alongside other celebrants in the industry.
“I want to do it forever; I love helping other celebrants and sharing tips. There is a community of celebrants which I get to be a part of.”
Throughout her journey as a celebrant, she has found being a young person in the industry has its advantages.
“You don’t need to have a lot of life experience as a celebrant. You just need to be able to celebrate the love a couple has for each
other and be as relatable as possible.”
She says being a celebrant has meant meeting many incredible people. The work has taken her travelling across New Zealand.
Her last piece of advice to any newly engaged couple is to remember to book your celebrant!
“Sometimes I find people forget about the celebrant, it’s such an exciting time for a couple and aspects such as choosing the perfect date and finding a venue take over!”
It’s important to get in fast, as Hannah is already starting to have a tightly packed calendar for the next year.

Choosing celebranta
BY NATASHA PARRANT
Choosing a celebrant for your wedding can be hard to do if you don’t know anyone, as often a celebrant is found through word of mouth.
A celebrant is a wonderful idea if you’re wanting to get married in the traditional sense because legally a marriage celebrant must execute the ceremony.
The celebrant needs to execute a ceremony in front of at least two witnesses,
according to Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand.
A celebrant in Aotearoa needs “an appointed Registered Marriage Celebrant to officiate. This may be an independent marriage celebrant, a registrar of marriages, a minister of a church, or a person connected with an approved organisation,” as described on www.celebrantbeth.co.nz.
Therefore, an appointed marriage celebrant must apply to and be registered
with the Department of Internal Affairs, Births Deaths and Marriages, according to Celebrants Aotearoa.
The celebrantbeth.co.nz website also shares that a marriage celebrant can help you through the process of getting married, give tips on getting a marriage licence, help in planning your ceremony, and with writing your vows. A celebrant will also run the wedding ceremony and officially executes the marriage.
Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand states that it’s essential for you to find someone that you feel comfortable with, trust and can communicate well with.
If you’re planning on getting married in a registry ceremony, you will need to have a registry celebrant. You can decide from a list when you apply for your marriage licence.
Again, take some time to research via Google, talking to your friends, relatives and workmates, and visit various celebrant websites in Aotearoa because you’re bound to find many in your area.
It’s more of a trial-and-error process, so take time out of your day to chat with a celebrant and get to know them before going ahead with choosing a celebrant.
At the end of the day, it’s all about feeling at ease and being happy on your big wedding day with someone else’s company you and your partner enjoy.

THE ART AND CRAFT OF GREAT CAKES
BY TIMMI APLIN-BARRETT
Wedding cakes have an interesting and complicated history, funnily enough. Who’d have thought a cake would be complicated?
Well, wedding cakes haven’t always been cakes! In Ancient Roman times (where many wedding traditions have stemmed from), a cake of wheat or barley would be broken over the bride’s head to bring good fortune to the couple.
In the 16th and 17th century, instead of cake, there was something called the bride’s pie. A savoury dish, it was considered very bad luck for guests not to have a piece of the pie. Later in the 17th century, two sweet cakes were made; one for the bride and one for the groom. However, the grooms cake slowly fell out of fashion as the bride’s cake took centre stage.
50 | WWW.MYWEDDINGMAG.CO.NZ
Be sure to find a cake flavour that you like – it’d be no good to get to the day and realise you hate fruit cake! The icing flavour is also something to think about, especially if you don’t like the taste of marzipan.
We can attribute the modern tradition of white icing to Queen Victoria. Along with the Ancient Romans, Queen Victoria had quite the hand in modern wedding traditions! When she used white icing on her wedding cake, it gained a new name; royal icing. She also popularised the colour white for weddings. Although white already symbolised purity and virginity in the Western culture, Queen Victoria’s choice to wear white lace on her wedding day started the trend of white that we still see today.
Wedding cakes have continued to play a huge part in modern day weddings; everyone at a wedding falls silent when the cake arrives!
From cutting the cake to hiding things inside it, the wedding cake is an integral part of the big day. From a simple single tiered cake with plain icing to a multi-layered cake comprising of complicated designs and colours, the choice is yours.
Be sure to find a cake flavour that you like – it’d be no good to get to the day and realise you hate fruit cake! The icing flavour is also something to think about, especially if you don’t like the taste of marzipan.
Luckily, these days there are plenty of options. You don’t even have to have an actual cake. Some weddings feature a croquembouche – a French tradition that stems from a medieval English tradition where cakes were stacked as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss above without
knocking them over. A successful kiss meant a successful marriage and life together.
Another consideration to make is dietary requirements – do you or any of your guests have allergies or dietary needs? Some weddings feature cupcakes or two different cakes for vegan, gluten free, dairy free or coeliac guests. It all depends on you and your guests. This is also why it’s good to make sure guests RSVP in advance so you can make sure as many needs are catered for as possible.
Many bakeries that provide wedding cakes also provide consultancy services so you can ensure you get the cake of your dreams.
The price for a wedding cake can range from around $100 for a pre-made cake or upwards of $200 for a custom-made cake.
It’s important to make sure you love the look of your cake as it’ll feature in many of your photos.
Here’s some pictures to help you get started on finding the perfect cake look.

Celebrating the occasion
BY MICHAELA
“Wedding receptions are curated milestone events filled with moments of overwhelming joy, happiness and gratitude.”
Planning a successful wedding reception is all about celebrating the formalities of the ceremony and enjoying a party with family and friends shared with food and dance.
Co-founder of Weddings She Wrote, Teuila Benioni says, “The best wedding receptions are positive experiences which are well-organised yet relaxed enough that there’s space left for the magic to happen.”

Pro tips 5
Guaranting a memorable and well-organised wedding reception:
SHARING CULTURES
Consider sharing your beautiful cultures and heritages with wedding guests by incorporating into the program any special customs and traditions unique to you.
GIVE PEOPLE TIME LIMITS ON SPEECHES
Limits on speeches will ensure this segment of the night will be tight and well organised. Consider breaking speeches into rounds if there are multiple speakers.
HAVE A SCHEDULE
A schedule which everyone has seen at least four-weeks before your wedding day to familiarise themselves before your special day. Make sure timings work for everyone in advance.
A SUBSIDISED BAR TAB
Is good for budget and both parties (couple and guests). Usually, people are pleasantly surprised at the outcome.
LATE NIGHT SNACKS
Late night snacks always go down a treat. Plus, they help sober up any drunken wedding guests who may have had a little too much to drink.
Weddings She Wrote is a wedding planning company based in Tāmaki Makaurau offering event design, on-the-day coordination, wedding services and destination weddings across Aotearoa and the Pacific Islands.
“Wedding receptions are curated milestone events filled with moments of overwhelming joy, happiness and gratitude.”
When it comes to designing and planning wedding experiences for their couples, the company works both remotely and in-person with clients.
“Our favourite couples are diverse people, in love, wanting something a little different and need help because they’re busy people!”
Teuila suggests a distinguished wedding reception encompasses the five basic human senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
“A great wedding reception has amazing food, an open bar and well thought out decorations (which aren’t bad for our planet).
“Also, great speeches and scheduled live entertainment which makes you want to
break it down on the dancefloor!”
They suggest the wedding reception is all about the party at the end of the formalities.
“It’s a space filled with smiles and hugs, it’s beautiful people and the beginning of the rest of your life together! It’s whatever you like.”
Other aspects to consider for a great wedding reception includes repurposing items from your wedding ceremony to be as eco-friendly as possible.
A skilled MC and playing ‘feel good’ music by a live band or DJ who can read the room, is important too.
Working with a well organised wedding planner such as the team from Weddings She Wrote, will mean your dream day runs smoothly.

Tom grew up in NSW, Australia and Mikaela was raised in the small town of Ohope. Their story was destined to travel from the start.
The couple met in Sweden during 2017 while both on OE (Overseas Exchange) to London. They coincidentally both had a layover stop in Sweden and shared a mutual friend who invited them for drinks at a local bar.
“The girl I met Tom through was sitting next to me on the plane to Europe.
“I think it must be anyone from the Australasia area who wants to be friends’, we seem familiar from our corner of the world!” she jokes.
It was not long before the couple were dating, before getting engaged in Japan two years later.
“We were on holiday in Japan at the time. We spent the morning travelling from Tokyo to Mt Fuji.
“Tom knew he wanted to propose and he had spent time on Google Maps finding the perfect spot.

“He got down on one knee as the sun was setting,” Mikaela says.
The pair were married in Queenstown, New Zealand on the sunny day of February 11th 2022, exactly two years later after their engagement.
Despite Covid restrictions affecting their number of guests, this didn’t stop the couple creating the wedding day of their dreams.
“We had to throw original plans out the window and have an intimate wedding with our closest friends and family.”
Mikaela says her favourite moment from the day was completely unintentional.
“As we had such a small wedding, we did canapes and cocktails in the afternoon. When we left to take photos, we realised we forgot to cut the cake!”
When the couple returned, they decided to cut the cake spontaneously, sitting around the table drinking champagne and eating cake.
“Your wedding day goes by fast; it was one of my favourite moments because I got to sit down and take it all in.”
She says her wedding was incredibly special and after years of planning and disruptions, the celebrations were everything the couple had hoped for.
“Tom was so consistent throughout the whole process. I was stressed at times and Tom was incredibly supportive.”
Mikaela describes the most humorous moment of her day was an unexpected visit from a pair of golf cart drivers, right before she walked down the aisle.
“We were waiting for our cue to start and these two people started tooting their horns at us.
“When I got to the end of the aisle, I turned around to see the train of my dress was covered in tire marks!
“At that stage, nothing could phase me at all. All you can do is laugh!” she says.

After some photoshopping skills from the photographer, tire marks were removed from Mikaela’s dress.
Despite the challenges the couple faced on their special day, they both were vibrant and said their special day was perfect.
“It all happened as it was meant to be and there were many special moments and memories to celebrate.”
