Wharekauhau Country Estate

WILD BEAUTIFUL LUXURY

Perched high on the clifftops of Palliser

Bay overlooking the mighty Pacific sits an elegant Edwardian country estate – Wharekauhau.

Considered one of New Zealand’s most luxurious hideaways, this 3000-acre estate blends nature’s rugged beauty with refined farmhouse hospitality to provide a world-class farm stay experience.

Wharekauhau is a 90-minute scenic drive from Wellington and just a short helicopter trip around the South Coast. On arrival, guests walk into a bygone era, instantly enchanted by the property’s commanding architecture and magnificent ten-mile coastline. The powerful beauty of the Remutaka foothills serves as the perfect backdrop for creating memories you will forever cherish.

Wharekauhau is your dream destination wedding venue. The lodge becomes your own private manor, a luxurious

blank canvas to tailor to your every décor desire. Pamper and relax ahead of your unforgettable courtyard ceremony in one of sixteen cottage suites dotted around the estate. Consider heading out for a morning clay target shoot before donning your best; prepare for your special day as you see fit.

Guests are invited to explore the estate after the ceremony, capturing picturesque snaps against clifftops, farms, villas, and beaches. Then, canapes and champagne signal a seated gourmet dinner.

Wharekauhau ensures every wedding has a memorable culinary side with their extensive wine cellar and vineyard portfolio, as well as their trusted team of expert chefs. Talk to the team about a chef in the wild property picnic, a divine experience for all the senses.

The festivities are far from over when the sun sets. Head to the dancefloor and light up Palliser Bay with a dazzling fireworks display. When the night winds down, retire to a cottage suite or slip up to the Palliser Room for whiskey and cigars.

4132 Wharekauhau Road, RD3 Featherston, Palliser Bay

The next morning, a large farmhouse breakfast awaits your party. Recover with a morning yoga session or visit the wellness spa for a massage, facial, and nailcare. As everyone slowly leaves, newlyweds typically soak in the magic of their wedding and embrace

the beauty of Wharekauhau for a couple nights longer.

The estate is a playground for the adventurous, who can try their hand at archery and ATV quad biking. The large indoor pool, gymnasium, and hot tub are ideal whether you wish to work out or wind down.

A working sheep station since 1844, Wharekauhau is believed to be one of the oldest Romney sheep stations in New Zealand. The Wairarapa estate’s rich history of hosting visitors inspired its owners to open the homestead as a luxury lodge in the 1980s, upgraded as one of New Zealand’s first ultra-luxury lodges in 1998.

The estate often becomes a sentimental place for guests to revisit and reminisce upon the legacy formed with friends and whanau there.

It perhaps then comes as no surprise that the team operating the lodge are like a family, says Richard Rooney, the estate’s general manager.

Wharekauhau generally specialises in intimate wedding events, with a lodge capacity near 60 people. To maintain this private nature, the estate hosts only three to five weddings per year. Book yours today.

En route to the beautiful Lake Ferry and the Southern Coast, this intimate venue is perfect for those looking for a serene and majestic wedding.

With a scenic backdrop of 30 year old vines and the aweinspiring Tararua Ranges, get ready for an ever-changing landscape that will create stunning photo opportunities for your special day. 3 Little Words encourage couples to use the vineyard for photos. The magnificent changes in lighting from day to sunset are simply incredible thanks to the dark sky reserve that is the Wairarapa.

Featuring a Mediterranean inspired covered courtyard for the summer months and an intimate, cosy restaurant for the cooler months, this fantastic spot can host some simply marvellous weddings. The courtyard can host up to 80 people while the restaurant can seat up to 30.

3 Little Words goes above and beyond for your big day. Leigh, Marise and

Kirsten know weddings can be stressful and incredibly busy so they ensure that you’re well looked after. Before the trio started 3 Little Words, Marise and Leigh started Crescendo Cuisine and Kirsten was managing a wedding venue in Featherston. It was a perfect fit to ask Kirsten to join the duo in their new venture - 3 Little Words.

3 Little Words makes their food with that same passion. All the food is made from scratch using locally sourced, ethical ingredients where possible. Match that with amazing customer service and all the trimmings a wedding could possibly need and 3 Little Words isn’t just a location or a venue. It’s an experience.

107 DRY RIVER ROAD, MARTINBOROUGH, WAIRARAPA

Located in a vineyard, 3 Little Words utilises its heritage as a winery in its delightful range of beverages. The restaurant was originally Coney Wines Trio Restaurant but after the owners retired, Leigh, Marise and Kirsten took over to revamp the area to make it a prime spot for weddings. Due to its vineyard location, 3 Little Words offers a stunning range of Coney Wines. From rieslings to rosés, chardonnays to pinots, 3 Little Words has thought of everything.

The trio want to make sure your big day is stress free so, on the special day, you’ll have a dedicated wedding host and an army of staff for eight to 10 hours.

Leigh, Marise and Kirsten have been known to pin on button holes, tie ties, repair cake accidents and “mother” guests if they need some TLC. In short, they go above and beyond to ensure your wedding is as marvellous and majestic as it can possibly be.

For stunning scenery, exquisite food, tasty drinks and service to die for, 3 Little Words is your venue. Look no further than this little slice of paradise in the Wairarapa region for your special day.

Tarureka Estate

A HISTORIC ESCAPE

Picture this. You drive through the gates at Tarureka Estate and you’re instantly transported into a weekend of perfectly planned relaxation and fun. Albee the dog enthusiastically greets you at your car and escorts you and your guests to your stunning accommodation for the weekend. You walk through the doors of the historic Homestead; the fire is roaring and a bottle of bubbles is already chilling in the fridge.

Tarureka started in the 1860s as a butter factory, the first of its kind in the Wairarapa. The building is one of the oldest and largest existing barns in New Zealand, its survival, helped by sensitive restoration, has transformed the historic building into a beautifully unique setting for weddings. Tarureka has been run by its current owners Beth and Reid since 2020 who fell in love with the property when they chose the venue for their own nuptials.

The rustic venue will give you exclusive access to The Loft barn which includes a chapel, a charming upstairs dining space and a generous dance floor and bar below. The open woodfire burner creates a dreamy, cosy setting for an intimate celebration, or comfortably hosts larger parties of up to120 guests. Couples who opt for the accommodation package will have full access to the seven-bedroom Homestead, which can host up to eighteen guests, as well as the surrounding estate grounds

for pre and post wedding celebrations with their loved ones.

The breathtaking grounds of this estate create the perfect backdrop for an outdoor ceremony. Stand before your guests on the leafy grove surrounded by historic trees and native birds. Or, for a more intimate ceremony, there is Lola’s charming rose-bordered courtyard with The Loft barn impressively positioned behind.

Choosing Tarureka Estate is a one-stop shop. Their allinclusive wedding packages are designed to limit the number of individual vendors required to create your special day. From exclusive hire of the entire venue, tables and chairs, all glassware and crockery, and décor items through to Homestead accommodation, on-the-day coordination and much more; Beth and Reid will happily help their couples with anything they need. With over ten years’ experience as an events manager, Beth can bring her high level of

professional expertise to plan and execute your wedding vision as an optional addition.

Tarureka weddings have the choice of three incredible local caterers, all of which provide their own bar and wait staff. The venue also offers BYO with no corkage fee, and as wine aficionados themselves, they understand how personal drink choices can be. Beth and Reid are happy to guide you with your drink selections, having fantastic relationships with vineyards in Martinborough who offer great prices for Tarureka couples.

When you plan one of the most memorable days of your life, not only does your

wedding venue need to meet your expectations, you also need peace of mind that you will have the help and support to ensure the entire process runs smoothly. Beth and Reid take care of the admin that comes with external vendors; they are on site the day of your wedding to coordinate, allowing you to completely relax and enjoy your big day.

If you’re looking for a family run, stunningly rustic venue with history and visual brilliance, you’ll be in safe hands at Tarureka Estate.

Enchanting celebrations

In the world of wedding planning, where each couple seeks to create a unique and unforgettable experience, hidden gem wedding venues have emerged as coveted treasures.

These venues, often tucked away from the bustling urban landscape, offer an air of exclusivity and charm that can transform a wedding into an enchanting celebration. From secluded vineyards and historic estates to rustic barns nestled in the countryside, these hidden gems hold the promise of a truly remarkable and intimate experience for both the couple and their guests.

Celebrate love and create cherished memories at

INTERCONTINENTAL WELLINGTON.

Nestled in the heart of Wellington, the iconic InterContinental Wellington boasts stunning panoramic views of the city skyline and the picturesque harbour, providing a captivating backdrop for your unforgettable celebration.

WELLINGTON.INTERCONTINENTAL.COM

What sets hidden gem wedding venues apart is their ability to evoke a sense of discovery and wonder. Unlike more traditional and well-known venues, these hidden gems are often off the beaten path, requiring guests to venture into new territories. The element of surprise sets the tone for the entire celebration, making it feel like an exclusive journey shared by a select few.

Hidden gem venues offer couples the opportunity to infuse their personality and style into every aspect of their celebration. With a canvas that is less predefined by convention, couples can tailor their wedding to align with their unique vision. Whether it’s a bohemian-inspired ceremony in a forest clearing, a vintage-themed reception in a historic barn, or an elegant affair in a private villa, these venues provide the flexibility to craft a wedding that is a true reflection of the couple’s love story.

Intimacy is another hallmark of hidden gem wedding venues. With limited space often being a defining feature, these venues naturally lend themselves to smaller guest lists. This creates an environment where the couple can truly connect with their loved ones, and guests feel a greater sense of involvement in the celebration. The cosiness of these venues fosters a more relaxed and warmer atmosphere, encouraging genuine interactions and heartfelt moments.

While hidden gems offer a sense of seclusion, they are not necessarily isolated. Many of these venues are equipped with

the necessary amenities to ensure a seamless experience for guests. Couples can provide their guests with the comfort and convenience they expect while still enjoying the charm of a hidden location. It’s this balance between exclusivity and practicality that makes these venues so appealing.

These venues, with their air of exclusivity, natural beauty, and intimate ambiance, set the stage for unforgettable experiences. As couples seek to break away from the ordinary and infuse their weddings with personal touches, hidden gem venues provide the perfect canvas for crafting a celebration that will be cherished by all who attend. While uncovering these treasures requires dedication and planning, the rewards are endless – a wedding day that feels like a secret shared among the fortunate few.

Sip and celebrate

When it comes to planning a wedding, every detail matters, including the drinks that will be served.

A signature cocktail is the perfect way to add a personal touch to your celebration, which is why the experts suggest a taste test with your other half to find the perfect flavours for you! Whether you opt for a timeless classic like a the Old Fashioned, or have a mixologist craft something funky and fun, a cheeky cocktail is guaranteed to get your guests into party mode.

The signature cocktail you choose can help to set the tone of the day just as much décor or food. Picture it: your guests mingling in their finest summer attire, beneath the twinkling fairy lights, sipping on something refreshingly fruity. The scene has all the makings of a stunning summer wedding that your guests will cherish for years to come.

Opting for a specialised cocktail selection for your celebration means you can choose more than one flavour combination. If you love tequila but your other half prefers rum, cater to both your preferences by creating individual cocktails for each of you, then give your creations a fun name! All you need to do find the drinks that best fit with who you are as a couple and the season you will be celebrating.

The good news; we’ve included two easy and delicious recipes from our friends at Remarkable Cream, and Kiwi Spirit Distillery, so you and your fiancé can taste test some cocktails at home before the big day.

Here’s to toasting love, happiness and exceptional drinks! Cheers!

FOR MOST NEWLYWEDS, A HONEYMOON IS THEIR CHANCE TO FINALLY TAKE A BUCKET LIST TRIP.

PHOTO Supplied kindly by Ocean Studios Fiji

This post-wedding escape allows you the first opportunity to fully embrace yourselves in your new marriage, free from the planning stress that led to the big day.

It sets the tone for more adventures in the future and forges memories that you will both cherish for the rest of your lives. After months of consuming wedding planning, the honeymoon gives the newlyweds an uninterrupted chance to relax in seclusion, romance, and most importantly, each other’s company.

Deciding on the perfect honeymoon destination can be difficult. The world is your oyster; there are a plethora of romantic spots to choose from, but all the dreamy scenarios you may be imagining can quickly give way to practical considerations such as budget, travel distance, and available activities.

The first step is to consider your budget. Your choices around timing, location and mode of travel will all be determined by how much you are willing to spend. If you covered the cost of the wedding yourselves, it’s best to consider the honeymoon expenses in the overall cost. This is where a wishing well, in lieu of gifts, can be helpful.

With your budget in mind, once you have an idea of where you’d like to go, start researching. Timing is a crucial consideration which will ultimately determine how expensive everything will be at the time of booking. This timing will

also effect things like weather conditions, attire, and activities available.

This is where a relationship with a travel agent can be invaluable. A travel agent will be in the know of safe travel practices, optimal timing, and will be able to guide you toward the best accommodation options. They will also remind you to stay open-minded when making decisions. There may be locations you hadn’t considered before; unexpected hurdles could throw your dream destination or the costs may make it an unreasonable goal.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, try not to over plan. Instead of rushing through three or four activities every day, consider planning for one or two activities each day as this ensures you have downtime no matter the destination.

Above all, make sure you reserve plenty of time to simply be with each other. The pressure to make your honeymoon the best trip you’ll ever have can be overwhelming. If circumstances prevent you from reaching your dream destination this time, remember you can make memories together anywhere. Your honeymoon is a time to celebrate your love, unwind and look ahead to the future as a team.

“Ben proposed up north while on a long weekend away glamping with our Staffy on a private beach, where he cooked a beautiful sunset dinner before he got down on one knee.”

The couple decided on Mantells, Mount Eden for its beautiful and unique Italian style architecture and styling. “As soon as you walk through the doors you feel like you have been transported to the other side of the world- without the jetlag!”. The central location was also important to them as they had guests travelling to New Zealand from all over the world.

The couple says that the venue itself was a big influence on the theme they chose, it gave them the feeling of being back in Italy on holiday where they made some of their favourite memories together. “Our theme was simple and classic, white roses and greenery. We had photo frames in the venue filled with loved ones on their wedding day. We also included a special reading in our ceremony in memory of my late grandad.”

WWW.MYWEDDINGMAG.CO.NZ | 49

Kylie says she modelled some of Trish Peng’s designs over 10 years ago and had been obsessed with her work ever since. “It was a dream to be wearing one of her gowns.” Ben went for a linen suit by Dorset Suits, which they first saw on the runway at the Wedding Show.

“My maid of honour was my sister Mavis, and my bridesmaid was my best friend Viktoriya who travelled from Malta to be with us.” Kylie says she bought two sets of dresses in the same colour which they tried on together once Viktoriya arrived in the country, eventually deciding on dresses from ASOS.

The couple chose a three-tier lemon cake with vanilla bean cream cheese icing, decorated with beautiful white roses and greenery to suit their theme. “The top tier we made especially for my aunty, it was a red velvet, gluten and egg free special.”

The couple had a rough week leading up to their big day, having been badly affected by the Auckland floods. “We had 40 minutes to take as much as we could from the house. Watching all the steamed dresses being thrown into rubbish bags was a real grounding moment for me. Our home was red stickered and made front page of the newspaper.” The couple were forced to find accommodation not only for themselves, but for their guests who had been arriving throughout the week.

“Leading up to the wedding I was incredibly proud of our family and so grateful to have such a strong support network. We all pulled together to make everything work out and the wedding went perfectly.”

Kylie and Ben say, if they could give advice to other couples planning their wedding it would be, “Even if you plan every single detail there will be things that happen that are completely out of your control; just take it all in and enjoy every minute!”

Blushing bride

Your wedding is quite possibly the most photographed day of your life, so the importance of your bridal makeup should not be understated; however, this doesn’t mean you have to take on an elaborate transformation.

A hint of rosy lipstick, delicate lashes that accentuate your eyes, or a touch of highlighter to enhance your natural glow is all it takes to make your photos pop.

This doesn’t imply that you have to stick strictly to a neutral look, but your wedding day isn’t the time or place to experiment with trends. Any worthwhile professional makeup artist will advise you to book at least one

trial session, to make sure you are happy not only with the style of glam you have chosen, but also with the products being used and the service being received.

Achieving a makeup look that stands the test of time is a process. The experts advise that it’s better to take the long route rather that attempting quick fixes. Start your skincare journey as soon as you can for healthy,

A setting spray won’t secure your makeup if it has been haphazardly applied or if you’ve skipped a setting powder beforehand.

Ultimately, the goal is for you to look and feel authentically you.

Whether this means a minimalist look, or rocking a striking crimson lip, don’t hesitate to embrace it. Many brides are straying from the ‘traditional’ and slaying a smoky eye and vibrant lips because it resonates with their self-confidence.

It’s a common pressure for brides to feel like they need to depart completely from their everyday appearance for the wedding day; it’s worth mentioning that your fiancé fell in love with you just as you are.

Whatever you choose, your wedding day should be when you feel your most confident and beautiful.

well-prepared skin. Ensure you are staying hydrated and getting plenty of rest; aiming for at least two litres of water a day and eight hours of sleep is the easiest and cheapest beauty treatment a bride can invest in.

Regular skin treatments leading up to the day are recommended to aid skin health. However, try to avoid any dramatic treatments or new products in the weeks leading up to the day to avoid adverse reactions. Simple at home treatments for smooth makeup application can include regular gentle exfoliation to minimise any dead skin cells that could disrupt the

even application of foundation.

Makeup artists advise brides that, despite it being your wedding day, you don’t need to apply extra foundation or opt for a heavier formula. Begin with a sheer layer and then gradually enhance coverage with a stick foundation if required. Apply base makeup with a light touch, initially using a small amount of product, bearing in mind that additional coverage can be added as needed.

While the magic of setting spray is used for sticking power, following best practices is essential to reach that point.

Meaningful connections

WEDDING CELEBRANT KIRSTY FIDDES

Otago based Kirsty Fiddes started her celebrancy training in between lockdowns during the Covid pandemic; she has now been assisting happy couples with their weddings for 2 years.

“I’ve always been interested in people. I previously worked in the travel industry over the course of 14 years planning people’s dream holidays. Then I was self-employed working with the public for 16 years.”

Genuine connection with her couples is vital for Kirsty. Other than the legalities, she doesn’t like to make the process about ticking boxes. She recommends couples

meet their potential celebrant and make sure they’re the right fit for them.

“I love getting to know them as a couple. From there I create a draft ceremony and also email them questions for each to complete, to ask how they feel about each other, what they are most proud of each other and their goals and dreams for the future. I find they’re more likely to open up that way, and I bring these answers into the ceremony.”

Kirsty tells me that when it comes to ceremonies, there’s not a lot of formality anymore. Couples are choosing to personalise their ceremony to reflect their personalities and a good celebrant should be taking that as an opportunity to create something great for the ceremony.

Kirsty focuses her work within the Otago and Central Otago areas and uses Facetime if dealing with clients outside of her region.

“I created a ceremony for a couple from Melbourne and got to know them on Facetime. Meeting them in person a few days before the ceremony was fantastic and felt like I already knew them.”

During her time as a celebrant, she has had the privilege of attending some beautiful weddings. “My first wedding was at the Olive Grove in Wanaka; it was amazing and I knew this was the right career path for me.”

“I have taken backyard weddings and venue weddings; they are all special.”

Her top tip for couples planning their wedding is to try to relax and enjoy the day. If things don’t quite go as planned just roll with it.

When it comes to couples, Kirsty welcomes them all. “I’d be honoured to be part of your special day. To me, love is love.”

Pro tips 5

ASK YOUR CELEBRANT TO MOVE TO THE SIDE FOR THE FIRST KISS

This way the photographer’s lens is focused on the two of you and you don’t have a third person standing awkwardly in the background of this iconic shot. Most knowledgeable celebrants will already know to do this, but it doesn’t hurt to give them a gentle reminder a week or so before.

INCLUDE A SONG REQUEST OPTION WITH YOUR RSVPS

Get your guests to note down a song or two that would guarantee them a spot on the dance floor. This is a fun idea and will save constant interruptions to your DJ or allow you to create the perfect Spotify playlist well ahead of time.

CONSIDER HAVING A WEDDING WEBSITE

While some are still opting for physical wedding stationery, there has been an influx of couples choosing the digital route. A wedding website is a great time saver, meaning all your invitations and RSVPs are sent and registered through your personal and private link. This is also an excellent way to save costs because there is no printing or postage involved.

REPURPOSE YOUR CEREMONY FLOWERS/DÉCOR

Wedding florals can easily be one of the most expensive parts of the day, so it makes perfect sense to reuse your ceremony flowers where you can. This idea works especially well if your ceremony and reception are at the same venue. Why not use your aisle décor on the dinner tables or showcase your bridal bouquet on the sweetheart table.

HAVE A PRIVATE LAST DANCE

Once your DJ or MC has directed your guests to the exit, steal a private moment together and have one final dance. You may choose to have your photographer capture this special memory or have the room completely to yourselves to relish in the last euphoric moments of your incredible day.

The invitation situation

SAVE THE DATES AND WEDDING INVITATIONS

Your save the dates are your guests’ first peek into your wedding day. With your guest list complete, save the date cards are a fun and practical way to tell your friends and family they’re VIP.

By sending these out early, couples give an unofficial heads up to friends and family asking them to be a part of their special day and provide plenty of time for preparation.

Etiquette tells us that save the dates should be sent well in advance to allow guests to mark their calendars, make necessary arrangements, and ensure they can attend the wedding without any scheduling conflicts. Typically, couples should aim to send these out ten to twelve months before the wedding day; with recommendations to send closer to twelve months for guests who may need to save money if needing to travel a significant distance to attend. Out of town guests will most likely need to arrange flights, accommodations, and transportation, making it essential to give them ample notice.

Unlike wedding invitations, save the dates require only basic information, such as the wedding date and location. The response received from the initial save the date usually gives a good idea of guest attendance as it creates excitement and anticipation among guests, building an emotional connection to the wedding before the formal invitations are sent. This emotional investment often translates into a stronger commitment to attend, as guests eagerly look forward to the celebration.

The timeline for sending your formal invitations varies depending on whether you have already sent a save the

PHOTOGRAPHER Life Like Film @lifelikefilmweddings - Insta www.lifelikefilm.com

date or not. If you haven’t sent out a save the date, it is recommended to send out your wedding invitations six to eight months before your wedding date to allow your guests enough time to make the necessary preparations.

If you have already sent save the dates you should aim to send your formal invitations two to four months before your wedding date. Since your guests are already aware of the date and location, they only need to be provided with the specific details, such as the exact venue address, RSVP instructions, and any additional information.

A traditional wedding invitation suite typically consists of the main invitation, an RSVP card and various enclosure cards containing helpful information for your guests. These enclosure cards may include details about the reception, travel and accommodations, attire recommendations, and your wedding website. By providing this detailed information, you ensure that your guests are well-informed and can plan their attendance accordingly. Keep in mind that by ensuring all essential details are clearly communicated to your guests via your invitation or wedding website, you minimise the chances of guests bombarding you with questions during the crucial months leading up to the big day.

The RSVP deadline is an important part of the wedding planning process. While the average timeframe for responses is around two months before the wedding, it is essential to try and align the deadline with the requirements of your venue or caterer. This allows you to finalise arrangements, create a seating chart, and make any necessary adjustments based on the number of confirmed guests.

As tempting as it may be to ask for RSVPs well in advance, it’s best to avoid setting a deadline more than two months before the wedding. Guests may hesitate to commit that far ahead due to unexpected events or conflicts that might arise. Instead, stick to a reasonable timeframe to allow guests the chance to respond with confidence and avoid any last-minute changes.

In an ideal world, the RSVP date for your wedding would mark the completion of every detail, wrapped up neatly with a bow. However, real life experience has proven that guests often treat the RSVP date as a rough estimate. As your wedding day approaches, about a month beforehand, it’s a good idea to touch base with family and friends who might have forgotten to RSVP and gently remind them.

Throughout this process, remember to express enthusiasm for your guests’ attendance, making them feel valued and appreciated as they join you in celebrating your special day.

Wil & Andre

REAL WEDDING

Wil first saw Andre working out at the gym, he took a chance and introduced himself. After playing hard to get for a few weeks, Andre caved and said yes to a first date.

The pair had a Covid engagement, Andre suggested they go for nice walk to the botanical gardens which is one of Wil’s favourite places, but they ended up in front of the Sydney Opera House, Andre got down on one knee and proposed right then and there.

“I was not expecting it all, as all the stores were closed. He had organised a private pick up from Tiffany and Co and had been hiding it in our guest room.”

A few weeks later it was Andre’s birthday. Wil organised a beautiful night in; he arranged for Andre’s favourite restaurant to do takeaway- cocktails and all. “I lit candles around the house and after dinner I had the ring hiding under the couch and proposed back to him so he could have a proposal moment to look back on too.”

The couple got married in the stunning Italian Renascence space within the Hamilton Gardens, followed by a reception at the Bill Gallagher room at Wintec. “We wanted a summer wedding so all the flora would be lush and vibrant.”

“My parents had serious health issues meaning we couldn’t have the wedding in Australia, or America where Andre is from- so we took the entire wedding home to New Zealand so my family could attend.”

“A highlight was having my parents walk me down the aisle, we weren’t sure they were both going to be at the wedding with their health so it was very emotional.”

Wil and Andre chose an Italian Renascence theme mixed with hints of Australiana. They had travelled to Italy a few months earlier and fell in love with the architecture, food and the beautiful colour palette of olive greens, neutral tones and pops of orange.

The couple decorated their day with white roses and eucalyptus to compliment. “We had eucalyptus throughout the entire reception venue as a hint to our home in Australia.” On their reception tables they had bespoke names cards at each place setting to make their guests feel extra special.

The bridal party’s attire was chosen to compliment the green foliage and to make the white roses pop. The bridesmaids wore Shona Joy dresses in olive green, and had the option to choose any style that best suited their body shape, with strappy nude heels by Ilio Smeraldo.

“For our menu we worked with Montana Catering, they were so great to work with and they created a bespoke menu for us.”

The couple had their two-tiered cake made by Four Cakery- the bottom layer being white chocolate and raspberry and the top tier ginger, baked pear and salted caramel. “My goodness it was delicious! Fully decorated with white roses and olive tree leaves.”

If Wil and Andre could give one piece of advice to couples, it would be to hire a wedding planner if the budget allows. “We did everything ourselves for nine months and it was super stressful. Allow for things to go wrong, but roll with the punches and know that everything will work out just the way it’s meant to on the day.”

Finding the perfect veil

Just like your dress, your veil should be a reflection of your personal style and overall vibe of your wedding. If you’re a classic bride, a cathedral style veil might be just right. However, if you’re creating a more boho vibe, then a flowy, nature inspired veil with floral details might be the one.

Your veil and dress should be BFFs, not rivals. When you’re veil shopping, take along a picture of your dress to make sure the fabrics and detailing match up. If your dress is all about intricate beading or lace, go for a veil with a similar look to keep things harmonious. However, if your dress is simpler, don’t be shy to rock a more elaborate veil that adds a touch of drama – it’s all about balance.

The length of your veil is the secret to nailing your bridal look. Shorter veils, like elbow or fingertip length, are super versatile and can work with all sorts of dress styles; perfect for outdoor celebrations and a more laid-back ambiance. If you’re wanting something more traditional, opt for a longer veil – like cathedral or chapel length – for that extra dose of elegance.

Are flower girls out?

For the modern couple wedding traditions can feel stuffy and limiting. A rising trend among couples is replacing what would usually be a young girl’s job as flower girl, with something out of the box.

Getting creative is half the fun of planning a wedding and these days, anything goes! Alternatives are a great way to add energy and fun to your ceremony while making some unforgettable memories.

Guests love the surprise and the couple get to include someone who may otherwise not have been involved.

FLOWER PETS

One of the cutest trends by far, is seeing the couples’ fur babies included in the ceremony.

It makes sense to get your beloved pet involved! Our pets are such a huge part of our lives and for some couples they are the beginning of their own family.

Ask a friend or family member to walk down with your kitty or pup and prepare for some adorable photos!

SKIP COMPLETELY

Another popular choice is skipping this part completely. A lot of couples are choosing not to have a bridal party which is a great way to simplify the wedding planning and cut costs. This also allows you to create the aisle of your dreams! Aisle décor doesn’t have to be limited to flower petals.

Why not drape beautiful silk across guest seating, hang lanterns or place colourful bouquets along your path.

FLOWER GRANDMA

Traditionally, grandmothers are the first to walk down the aisle, leading the way for the rest of the wedding party. Why not mix it up and get nana to dance her way down instead. Age is just a number after all! Let nana in on the fun and see the smiles on your guests faces as she sprinkles those flower petals.

BEER BRO

One of the more recent trends is the comical, party loving beer bro. For the laid back, ready to party couple, the beer bro is a fun new alternative. The beer bro will generally carry beer or other drinks in a cooler, and hands these out to guests as he makes his way down the aisle. This idea is not for everyone, but certainly adds big energy and a sense of humour to your ceremony!

FLOWER DUDE/DUDETTE

Have a friend with big energy and loves attention? This is the perfect job for them! Get your friend to hype up your guests and get the good times rolling before you make your way down the aisle. Get them to carry flower petals in a fanny pack, throw confetti or blow some bubbles as they shimmy their way down. Either way, your guests will be excited for the after party.

DANCER/ ENTERTAINER

A fresh and unique alternative for your ceremony is hiring a dancer or entertainer to pirouette down the aisle.

Or maybe you have a talented loved one who you can ask to show off their moves. This idea is sure to create an incredible experience and absolutely wow your guests.

Breathtaking bridal hair

Wedding hairstyles are not immune to the ever-changing trends that come with wedding planning. We may scoff looking back at mum’s wedding photos now, forgetting that the fluffy toy poodle-esque’ perm was once peak fashion.

The same could be said about our beloved Hollywood waves or sleek low bun in as little as five years!

Your wedding hair should not only compliment your dress but also be comfortable enough for you to let loose and feel relaxed on your big day. There are definitely ways to achieve both and the experts recommend chatting to your stylist about having a hair trial beforehand. This allows you to experiment with different styles without pressure.

Creative Ponytail

What do you think of when someone says ponytail? Probably a boring ‘I just need my hair out of my face’ look right? The pony tail is actually one of the most versatile hairstyles and any stylist worth their weight will be able to take this everyday look and turn it into something extraordinary. By adding braiding or texture you get romance, while keeping it simple and sleek you have a more modern bridal look.

Romantic Curls

An absolute classic and timeless look for almost any bride, you can’t go wrong with curls. Want extra drama? Ask your stylist to tease your hair close to the root to add volume. Maybe you’re wanting more of a romantic look? Keep your curls loose and soft; this is perfect if you’re considering wearing a delicate flower crown.

Half Up Half Down

Probably one of the most comfortable styles to wear, combining the romance of flowing locks and the practicality of a ponytail. The half up hairstyle is another style to really play around with, the options are endless. Adorn this style with a bold statement hair piece, or compliment your bouquet by adding some of your flowers to tie the look together.

Sleek Low Bun

Textured Up-Do

The textured up-do is a romantic and relaxed style, generally quite unstructured but still perfectly balanced. This hairstyle is for the bride who wants a soft look while keeping most of the hair out of the face and off the neck. The dance floor can get hot and there’s nothing worse than having to unstick your hair! Ask your stylist to experiment with some loose twists or braids to give this look a real edge.

For the modern bride you can’t go past a sleek low bun. This style is perfect if you’re wanting a more sophisticated or structured look. Not to be mistaken as boring, there are many things your stylist can do to jazz up this style while keeping it clean and minimal! Why not add a pin curl or two, wear a statement hairpiece or dazzle with a few diamantes.

Wedding gift eti uette

your budget too far, a thoughtful approach could be to gift them a gift card to their store of choice instead. These numbers are only a guideline; there is no minimum or maximum amount for guests to spend.

While traditional wedding etiquette doesn’t technically make gift giving mandatory, it’s highly recommended. Weddings mark significant milestones that deserve celebration, and expressing your love and well wishes for the couple on their special day is only natural. But what’s the ideal gift and how much should you spend?

As the wedding nears, financial concerns may start to arise. The prospect of covering travel expenses, accommodation, attire, and then, on top of all this, a gift for the occasion, can be incredibly stress inducing for wedding guests. It’s important to note that there’s no fixed amount that guests must stick to when giving a gift. You should make the decision based on your personal budget and circumstances.

On average, a guest might spend around fifty to one hundred dollars on a gift. If you are buying off the couple’s registry, and the only items left would push

Rule 101 of gift etiquette is to utilise the couple’s wedding registry. Most guests welcome any gift-buying assistance they can get, which is why taking advantage of the registry is wise. The registry is the couple’s way of telling guests exactly what they want/need or would appreciate the most.

Beyond conventional wedding gifts, some couples create a cash or honeymoon fund, allowing you to contribute something more personal than the traditional registry items. The idea of giving money as a wedding gift is no longer considered taboo. In reality, most newlyweds appreciate having some additional funds post-wedding. So, if you’d prefer to allocate your wedding gift budget towards something more practical than a crystal duck, contributing to a cash fund is a thoughtful option.

When you accept a wedding invitation, you get faced with the inevitable question of ‘what do I give as a gift?’.

If you can avoid it, try not to bring your gift to the wedding itself, especially if it’s a destination wedding. Consider the couple will have to carry it around with them which becomes an inconvenience. Instead, have your gift shipped directly to their home to simplify things. If you are opting to for a monetary gift, the couple will generally state if they will have a wishing well for cash at the reception, or if they have set up a honeymoon account for an easy bank transfer.

Wedding Day Essentials

Whether this is your first wedding invitation or not, wedding gift etiquette can feel overwhelming. Remember that nobody gets married purely to receive gifts, the couple will always be happier just to have you attend and be in your company on their special day.

Arrive in style

You may have laboured over your wedding venue, but have you considered how you are getting there? There are many ways to travel to your dream day, with cost and style only scratching the decision-making surface. Create lasting memories and start the day off right with a grand entrance to your wedding.

From planes and trains, to automobiles, the options for wedding day transportation are boundless. When it comes to booking your transportation, choose an option that aligns with your individual style and the vibe of your wedding. If you budget allows, consider a fun and unique option for your wedding party and guests too.

When arranging transport for your wedding day, there are many things to consider.

For one, your travel option will likely be in the background of many photos. Ensure your ride fits your style, vision, and budget. Plan in advance, know your options, expect the unexpected, but most importantly keep the focus on yourself. It’s your special day, so make it unforgettable for all the right reasons.

HELICOPTER

Why just feel on top of the world when you could actually be there? Take to the skies and arrive via helicopter to your dream ceremony. Enjoy otherwise inaccessible landscapes like secluded beaches or romantic, snowy mountaintops on your special day.

STRETCH LIMO

A sleek luxury limousine is a timeless way to arrive in style. It offers comfort, elegance, and ample space for you and your bridal party. The limousine is a classic wedding day option that will make you feel like an A-list celebrity.

CLASSIC CAR

A classic car, such as a vintage convertible, adds an elegant touch of nostalgia to your entrance. Enlist a dear friend or relative to drive, or opt for a vehicle with sentimental value to add a personal touch to your arrival. If a classic car is not your style, perhaps an exotic car will add a sense of adventure to your arrival. For fans of speed and luxury, this bold choice is an excellent way to embrace your inner racer.

FERRY

If your wedding venue is near a body of water, arriving by boat or yacht can be incredibly stylish. Journeying over the water will captivate your wedding day attendees from the onset, especially for beach or waterfront weddings.

If you wish to take being on the water to the next level, consider holding your ceremony on a private chartered cruise. Marvel in breathtaking views and celebrate your love with family and friends, all while blissfully cruising the seas in a seamless wedding day experience.

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE

For a more traditional aesthetic, nothing beats the regal magic of a horse-drawn carriage. Live the fairy-tale dream as you trot to your wedding venue.

SCHOOL BUS

If your guest list is on the larger side, a vintage bus could prove a practical and comfortable solution. A beautifully restored classic bus that fits your wedding theme can be a charming and inclusive travel option.

The New
Wedding

Although not a new idea internationally, New Zealand lacked an event until 2014 that formally acknowledged and celebrated professionals in the wedding industry with a physical award presented during a formal ceremony.

Identifying this unique gap in the market, Peter & Valeta embarked on a journey to establish a platform that would spotlight individuals within the wedding industry who truly excel in their respective fields, offering them genuine recognition.

Prior to the launch of the NZ Wedding Industry Awards, New Zealand lacked an opportunity for wedding luminaries to partake in a prestigious gala dedicated to their achievements, complete with a physical award they could proudly exhibit to their customers.

In the early days of 2014, the awards started with around 14 categories. By 2023, they were commemorating winners across almost 40 categories.

The expansion in categories is a reflection of the intricate nature of the wedding planning process, with multiple sub-categories that are often not thought about until diving into the detailed preparations for a wedding. For instance, the area of entertainment has evolved beyond the traditional scope of a wedding reception band or DJ. It now covers a broader spectrum, including solo artists performing during the bride’s entrance at the ceremony, magicians entertaining guests, acrobats, balloon artists, and many more exceptionally skilled craftsmen and women.

The first step to enter the awards is securing a nomination. After your nomination is submitted, you’ll receive an invitation welcoming you to formally participate in the awards.

Eligibility to enter extends to all vendors of weddingrelated services, and nominations can be made by anyone, whether it’s a fellow professional in the wedding industry, past or present customers, or, if you don’t want to wait for a nomination, you can throw your own hat in the ring!

The awards judging process is different than any other. The judges put an emphasis on customercentricity and the overall customer experience with a business. Prioritising customer-centric behaviours like how a business engages with their customers from the initial enquiry, all the way through to the end of their customer journey, levels the playing field significantly. The awards’ aim is to showcase business owners who elevate client interactions beyond a transaction, creating transformative experiences.

The ultimate goal is to have clients become advocates for a business due to exceptional service and experiences. This is the vital factor that separates excellence from mediocrity.

In 2023, the awards celebrated the acknowledgment of young business proprietors in their early to midtwenties, as well as emerging entrepreneurs. These individuals are rising stars within their respective fields, achieving some incredible accomplishments. For instance, Emily Smail from The Cosmetic Clinic (Rotorua) and Emma-Rose Smith from Grazey Chick (Auckland), as well as showcasing some wonderful sponsors, such as, Mixmaster DJs, Wilderness Films and Valley d’Vine.

Awards directors, Peter and Valeta, hope to one day create a regional awards gala within each region. The winners from these regional events would then advance to a national awards gala. The goal is to make this a reality by the year 2028.
