Makeup Skincare&Guide
With over 13 years of experience in the makeup industry, I’ve honed insights to help brides-tobe navigate wedding preparation, particularly focusing on makeup and skincare.
Skincare Routine:
Prioritise skincare months ahead to ensure a radiant complexion on your big day. Consistency is key; consult a specialist if needed. Avoid waxing too close to the wedding to prevent irritation.
Choosing a Makeup Artist:
Select an artist whose style aligns with your vision. Schedule a trial to ensure compatibility and longevity of the makeup.
The Trial:
Prepare for the trial by scheduling spray tans or lash extensions, and wear white to visualise the final look. Provide feedback to ensure satisfaction.
Lash Lifts:
Avoid lash lifts close to the wedding to prevent compatibility issues with false lashes.
Night Before the Wedding:
Steam your dress to ensure humidity doesn’t interfere with the hair and Makeup.
Morning of the Wedding:
Create a calm environment for your makeup artist and ensure clean, moisturiser-free faces. Minimise distractions.
Tear Prevention and Eating:
Address emotional moments before makeup application and eat beforehand to sustain energy. Use straws to preserve lipstick.
Touch-Up Kits:
Inquire about touch-up kits from your makeup artist for a flawless look all day.
Meticulous preparation ensures you’ll look and feel your best on your special day.

No kids allowed
BY JAMIE QUINNPutting together your guest list is quite possibly the most difficult part of wedding planning.
It’s an emotionally charged task with the potential to create tension between you and your loved ones for several reasons. One of those reasons is the challenging decision to exclude children from your celebration.
Many factors can influence the decision to have an adults-only wedding, such as budget restraints, venue restrictions, or simply the personal preference to have a child-free celebration. Children can be unpredictable and create distractions during important moments; it’s then up to the parent to take control.
As the bride and groom, you have every right to create your guest list however you see fit. However, once you’ve made your decision, it’s important to communicate carefully with your friends and family. This can be done on your wedding invitations, in a separate email, or in person.
Keep your communication clear and polite, and if questioned, explain the reasoning behind your decision. Some guests will graciously take advantage of the opportunity to have a relaxed, child-free party but expect pushback from others.
If you’ve explained your reasoning and offered alternatives, and they are still pushing you to make an exception, it might be time to accept that they won’t be attending.
It’s normal to receive a bit of pushback, but if you begin experiencing bad behaviour from your friends or family, then your approach will need to change. Set firm boundaries and make sure they know disrespect will not be tolerated.
Be ready to have difficult conversations, but ultimately, if someone insists they won’t be attending without their children, you will need to respect their decision.

Trends
BY JAMIE QUINNGone are the days of cookie-cutter weddings.
Wedding trends are moving away from tradition and towards self-expression. Today’s couples are infusing their unique personalities into every detail, from a food truck reception to wedding illustrators who provide personalised favours for guests.
Couples are beginning to stray from the monochrome trend and leaning into bold and playful tones with vibrant pinks, oranges, and even fuchsia making a statement. Even traditional monochrome weddings can be elevated with the addition of a bold and bright accent colour. With the rise of colourful weddings, couples are no longer feeling confined to traditional neutral or pastel colour schemes.
One of the biggest wedding trends of the year is a focus on sustainability. Couples are becoming more environmentally conscious and are looking for ways to reduce their wedding’s carbon footprint. This includes choosing venues that are easy for guests to get to, reducing food waste, and opting for decorations that can be reused or recycled.
Remember, the wedding industry moves quickly. The trends you see today may not be the hot thing in six months. That’s why it’s more important to stay true to yourself and what represents you as a couple.
Trends come and go, but your love is forever.
Cat & Dave
REAL WEDDING
Cat and Dave’s love story started like the beginning of a rom-com.
“Dave and I met at a party and I thought I made a terrible first impression! I woke up the next morning and thought to myself, “Why was I such a dick to that guy?!”
But apparently, he wasn’t put off, and on his way home from the party (which was due to be one of the last he attended before moving to Auckland), he said to his friend, “Don’t let me talk to that girl again or I’ll never move away.
“A few months later, I ended up getting a job at his work, and my first day was his last before his move to the Auckland office. They took the whole team out to lunch to celebrate, and we ended up wedged next to each other; he was so cute and funny, and I remember thinking, “Damn, I’m gutted this guy’s leaving.” After he left, we started messaging at work, which turned into texting on the weekends and eventually culminated in the world’s greatest first date weekend on Waiheke Island.”…

When the wedding high fades
BY JAMIE QUINNTaking
care of your mental health after ‘I do’
The wedding day is a whirlwind of emotions – joy, excitement, nervous anticipation. You’ve meticulously planned, celebrated with loved ones, and finally tied the knot. However, contrary to what fairytales tell us, happily ever after doesn’t begin with the recessional.
Feeling a dip in mood after the wedding’s high is completely normal. Post-wedding blues manifest as feelings of sadness, loss, or emptiness after the wedding festivities have ended. This emotional rollercoaster can surprise couples, leaving them feeling confused and questioning their decision.
The roots of the post-wedding blues are multifaceted. For months, the wedding has likely been a focal point, consuming your energy and attention. The intense focus on the event can leave couples feeling directionless once it’s over, particularly when they have spent months or even years anticipating this single day. The abrupt end to this high level of excitement and attention can result in an emotional letdown.
Several factors contribute to these feelings. For starters, the physical and emotional exhaustion from the wedding, combined with the return to normal life, can be unsettling.
Social media also plays a role. The carefully curated feeds overflowing with picture-perfect wedding moments can create an unrealistic portrayal of wedded bliss. Comparing your reality to this idealised version can fuel feelings of inadequacy and disappointment.
One key way to combat post-wedding blues is to plan for the post-wedding phase during the wedding planning process itself. Setting long-term goals that extend beyond the wedding can help couples maintain a sense of purpose. These goals don’t have to be huge; they can be as simple as planning a trip, taking up a new hobby together, or focusing on your career.
Have your dream wedding skin!
Look radiant and refreshed with a wedding treatment plan personalised to you.
Our experienced team of doctors, registered nurses and beauty therapists work closely with you to create a results-driven treatment plan, enhancing your natural beauty for your special day.
With the wedding whirlwind behind you, prioritise quality time with your new spouse. Plan date nights that remind you why you fell in love. These moments of connection can reaffirm your commitment to each other and bring back a sense of normalcy.
Self-care might have taken a backseat during wedding planning. Now is the time to reclaim it. Prioritise activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether that’s reading a book, going for a walk in nature, practising yoga, or indulging in a favourite hobby.
Often, the focus on the couple during the wedding phase can lead to neglect of other relationships. Reconnecting with loved ones can provide emotional support and help ease feelings of loneliness or isolation.
If your feelings of sadness or anxiety are overwhelming and interfering with your daily life, don’t hesitate to seek help from a mental health professional. Counselling can provide a space to explore these feelings safely and develop strategies to cope with the transition more effectively.
While post-wedding blues are a common experience, they are manageable with the right strategies and mindset. By acknowledging your emotions and prioritising your connection as a couple, you can navigate this phase and emerge stronger together.

Statement of love
BY JAMIE QUINNHow to transform your love, stories and memories into beautiful vows
Writing your wedding vows is a tremendously overwhelming task. How could you possibly put all your love and admiration into a few short minutes? Wedding vows are an incredibly intimate part of your ceremony; it’s a chance to revisit some of your special memories, share your favourite things about your partner, and look to the future.
If you’ve chosen to write your own vows, it can be difficult to get started. Traditional vows are very structured and formal. However, there are no hard and fast rules when you’re writing personalised vows. Whether you want to bare your heart at the altar or have your loved one cry laughing, here are some great tips to help you get started.
START EARLY
The easiest mistake you can make is thinking you have all the time in the world to start your vows. You don’t have to write the whole thing in one go but start the process early to give yourself plenty of time to write them and practice.
TAKE NOTES
In your notes app on your phone, start jotting down all the things you love about your partner as they happen. It can be hard to stay present during moments during the day, and this helps us to recognise all the little things we find endearing that we might otherwise overlook. This is also a great way to reconnect with each other, giving you an opportunity to acknowledge all they do for you.
GET INSPIRED
Take inspiration from your favourite movies, songs, and books. If you’re struggling to put your feelings into words, chances are someone else already has. There are no rules that say you can’t use poetry, song lyrics, or quotes to express how you feel.
FORMAT
Break your vows down into sections and focus on one at a time. A simple format to follow looks like this:
Open: This is how you start your vows and can be a sweet anecdote or simply how excited you are to be standing there with your loved one.
You’re the best: Is all about why your partner is the best. You can talk about the qualities you love about them or the things that make them a great person.
We’re the best: This is all about you and your partner and what makes your relationship so strong. You can talk about why you’re choosing this life with them and brag about your relationship!
Vows: This is where you will make your actual vows or promises to your partner, e.g. “I promise to love you in good times and in bad.”
Close: To finish, you’ll put a nice bow on top of everything you’ve said. This could be a simple “I love you”, revisit the story you opened with, or look to your future plans together.
EMBRACE SENTIMENTALITY
If there is any a time for you to be cheesy, it’s in your wedding vows. This is your chance to absolutely gush about your partner and your relationship. This doesn’t mean you have to share your deepest secrets at the altar but aim for heartfelt.
SAY “I LOVE YOU”
This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how many people forget to mention these four little words.
DON’T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT GRAMMAR
Yes, you need to have complete sentences that flow well, but remember that you are the only one who will be reading your vows out loud. If you need to add extra full stops and commas to help you slow down and take a breath, then absolutely do. Your vows should sound like you; you’re not being graded!
PRACTICE READING OUT LOUD
Now that you’ve got it in writing, it’s time to read it out loud. You might feel silly practising in the mirror, but it’s important to hear how they flow and get an idea of timing. Ideally, you want your vows to be under five minutes long when read aloud. I don’t know about you, but I talk incredibly fast when I get nervous, so take this into account.
WRITE THEM ON PAPER
Physically write or type your vows on paper. Standing at the altar reading off your phone is not a good look. Consider reading from vow books your celebrant can hold onto until it’s your turn to speak. Vow books also make great keepsakes you can cherish together for a lifetime.

Host with the most
BY BEN O’CONNELLShould you ask a friend to emcee your wedding?
Funny, extroverted, charming, humble – these are some of the first qualities that come to mind when you characterise a master of ceremonies. But an emcee must also manage time, deal with hiccups, and put the audience at ease, among other challenges. Emceeing a friend’s big day is an incredible privilege, but one that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
You can imagine how excited I was when no other than My Wedding Mag editorial manager Jamie asked me to emcee her wedding. And as a former quiz and karaoke night host, I was still excited once the offer’s realities set in. But no matter your experience level, it’s a big ask. Emceeing takes preparation, a strong voice, and a professional outlook still true to you. And things rarely go exactly to plan. Ahh!
Your most sociable friend mightn’t be the right fit. Boris might be fun at work drinks, but consider how his borderline jokes and tangents might go down with an audience. Maybe ask him to give a short speech instead. The same goes for enquiring friends who you don’t think are a good fit. At the end of the day, it’s your special one. You can always say no.
Professional emcees can be quite expensive and lack that personal touch. Hiring friends also means they’re forever a part of your memories, adding another intimate layer of shared experience. One potential downside is that the emcee is half-guest, half-staff. Have fun! and Relax! the guests would say.
Of course, I had a blast at Jamie’s wedding, but I was equally in work mode. Boris-ing out on cocktails would’ve been fun, but ensuring the evening ran smoothly was far more rewarding. Consider you let Boris host, and he sucks. What’s the consequence? A professional would at least reimburse you.
Not everyone enjoys public speaking. You may think I’m a masochist, but I love talking in front of crowds. Your friend might be quick-witted, reliable and adaptable even, but hate the idea. My advice is to prioritise this confidence above all else.
Beyond public speaking comfort, if your friend is organised and responsible, actually knows you, your partner, and your interests, and can think on their feet for when things go haywire, why not ask them to emcee? Trust me when I say it’s an incredible honour to be trusted with the role, one that will long be cherished.
Nikita & Reid
REAL WEDDING
Nikita was Reid’s gym crush for a while before he worked up the courage to make a move.
“Reid was too shy to come over and say hello, so he found me on social media and noticed I was single, so he sent me a few messages then asked me out to dinner, and it just took off from there.
“For the proposal, we went away for Reid’s birthday/our anniversary to Pouto up North, where there was a beautiful Air BnB that came with a 4WD to take to the lighthouse. We planned a late picnic & some drinks to celebrate, but I didn’t realise how hard the hike up the sand dunes was to get to the lighthouse (where Reid planned to propose). So, I had had enough, made it halfway, and just said it doesn’t matter; we’ll just sit here. Little did I know that I was ruining my own proposal, and I’m quite stubborn, so plan B was just there and then! Makes for a laugh now.”…

Beyond the suit
BY JAMIE QUINNTHE DO’S AND DON’TS EVERY GROOM SHOULD KNOW
So you’ve popped the question, and you’re ready to tie the knot! Congratulations! But between the excitement and the celebratory high-fives, there’s also the not-so-small task of planning a wedding.
While the bride often takes centre stage, grooms play a crucial role in making this day unforgettable.
DO
BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT: This is your wedding too! Voice your opinions on everything from the venue to the menu. Remember, a happy groom makes a happy bride (and vice versa).
SUPPORT YOUR BRIDE: The final stretch of wedding planning can be extra stressful for your partner. Simply lending a listening ear or offering a helping hand with last-minute details can make a world of difference. Help shoulder the stress and be ready to tackle tasks together.
DELEGATE: Lean on your groomsmen or family. Don’t be afraid to ask your support system for help with errands, planning tasks, or even just moral support.
FUEL YOUR BODY AND MIND: Wedding planning is a marathon, not a sprint. Take care of yourself! Eat healthy meals to keep your energy levels up, and prioritise a good night’s sleep to manage stress.
GET GROOMED: You might not need a full spa day, but invest in some self-care. Schedule a haircut, a shave, and maybe even a facial to ensure you look your sharpest on the big day.
EMBRACE THE MOMENT: The wedding day will likely be a whirlwind of emotions and activities. Take a few quiet moments throughout the day to soak it all in. Breathe, savour the special moments with your future spouse, and truly appreciate the significance of the occasion.
DON’T
BE A YES-MAN: While compromise is key, don’t be afraid to express your preferences. Speak up if something doesn’t feel quite right.
SAY YOU DON’T CARE: This phrase might seem harmless, but trust us, it’s a wedding planning downer. Even if a specific detail feels unimportant to you, make an effort to engage in the discussion. Look at different options, offer suggestions, or simply ask clarifying questions. Your partner will appreciate your involvement!
GO ROGUE: A bachelor party is a tradition, but plan it strategically. Avoid scheduling it right before the wedding – a sleep-deprived and possibly hungover groom isn’t the best look for your big day. Give yourself enough time to recover and arrive at the wedding feeling refreshed and ready to celebrate.
WING YOUR VOWS: Writing your vows beforehand ensures you express your love with genuine sincerity. Take some quiet time a few weeks before the day to craft vows that are personal, meaningful, and uniquely yours.
FORGET THE RING: This one seems obvious, but delegate this task to your best man just in case (and for some peace of mind).
OVERINDULGE: It’s okay to have a drink or two to celebrate, but remember, you want to be present for your wedding. Keep it classy!

Small but spectacular
BY JAMIE QUINNEmbracing the simplicity of the micro-wedding
The micro-wedding trend has been seeing a significant rise, with couples choosing to have smaller, more intimate celebrations that focus on the quality of experience rather than the number of guests. This shift towards minimalism doesn’t just highlight a change in wedding sizes but also a deeper, more personal approach to celebrating love.
Defined by a small guest list, micro-weddings offer couples an opportunity to prioritise what truly matters: celebrating their love story with those closest to them. They generally have a head count of less than 30 guests, focusing on quality over quantity. But what goes into planning such an intimate celebration?
The guest list is the foundation of any wedding. A micro-wedding means you’re only inviting those who hold a special place in your lives. Prioritise immediate family, close friends, and those who have significantly supported your relationship.
For most couples, a micro-wedding means more control over the budget and less financial burden. By scaling back on guest numbers, you’re able to free up the budget for elements that matter most to you, like live music or booking your dream photographer.
Micro-weddings typically require fewer vendors than larger weddings, resulting in lower overall vendor expenses. Couples can prioritise hiring top-tier vendors for key services, knowing that their budget will stretch further with fewer vendors to accommodate.
Planning a large wedding can be overwhelming and time-consuming, with endless details to coordinate and logistics to manage. The beauty of a micro-wedding is its potential for personalisation and flexibility. The condensed guest list allows freedom to explore unconventional venues, such as the café where you first met, the art gallery where you catch each new exhibition or the beach where you said yes.
An intimate celebration means couples have the luxury of savouring every moment of their special day without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. From getting ready together in the morning to stealing quiet moments alone during the reception, embracing the simplicity of a micro-wedding allows couples to slow down and fully immerse themselves in the joy and beauty of the moment. This mindful approach to wedding planning ensures that every aspect of the day is savoured and appreciated, creating memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Pro tips 5
BY JAMIE QUINNMEET VENDORS IN PERSON
A vendor might have a fantastic online portfolio, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll be the right fit for you. Meeting your vendors in person is the best way to get a real feel of their working style and how their flow may impact your day.
HAVE A DESIGNATED EMERGENCY CONTACT PERSON
Whether it’s your maid of honour or your cousin, choose someone you trust and let them be the go-to person for any disasters on the day. The last thing you need is to deal with late guests or vendors on the morning of your big day.
HAVE A MAKEUP AND HAIR TRIAL BEFORE BOOKING YOUR STYLIST
Any reputable beauty stylist will advise you to have at least one trial session before booking to make sure you are happy not only with the style of glam you have chosen but also with the products being used and the service being received.
FILTER OUT THE NOISE AND DECIDE WHOSE OPINIONS ACTUALLY MATTER
Some people can’t help themselves when it comes to voicing opinions that nobody asked for. As difficult as it may be, the best thing to do is just ignore the noise. Stay true to yourself and your partner’s values. Yes, you may disappoint some people, but if they genuinely care about you, they will get over it and still enjoy your celebration.
PRIORITISE PHOTOGRAPHY
Your photographer is the one who captures your big day! All the details that you painstakingly laboured over and all the joy and love that is exchanged on the day will be represented through your photos. Make sure you choose a photographer whose style you love and who you get along with. These are your forever photos, so invest in them!
