So, that’s it for 2009 eh? We are ofďŹ cially about to enter The Future. Why is it that 2010 still sounds like something out of a B-grade sci-ďŹ movie? I think my new year’s resolution will be to wear a reective silver jumpsuit and a saucepan on my head for all of January in an attempt to start a new fashion craze, so we can all start looking the part. You guys are in, right? Speaking of big dreams, I’m glad I never made that resolution a year ago to become a vegepearian, and only eat pear-shaped food. I reckon I would have got pretty bored of pears, chicken drumsticks and cartoon pork chops. Anyhoo. School is out. A summer of good times is in. To celebrate, we’re giving away a small mountain of double passes to all the best festivals (check out page 32). Have a wicked summer. Don’t forget to OD on the factor 30, and to start saving for your ying car, which, according to the gods of sci-ďŹ , should be available to buy within the next couple of months.

What was it like being involved in a project based on a book that’s so well loved by Kiwis? Was there a lot of pressure? S: Well, there was a certain level of pressure, but Jonathan [King, Director] stressed it was a whole new take on it. The teens are older and it’s quite different to the book, so the pressure comes off a lot when you realise it’s supposed to be its own entity, instead of mimicking what came before. But of course there is a bit‌ everyone hears about it and goes “Ooh, I love Rachel, she’s so cool!â€? so you think you’ve got to do it justice! What was your favourite part to ďŹ lm? T: The action sequences, I liked doing the stunts. S: We did our own stunts. T: We did all except one each. S: We had a stunt double for them, because they didn’t want to damage us‌ [laughs]. That was lots of fun, and at one point I was harnessed up and being swung from the stairs by Mr Wilberforce. That was me, except when I dropped – that was a stunt double. T: Oh, and there was a bit when we had to jump and fall a little. On the second oor – that wasn’t us, we jumped a little and fell about that much [indicates about a foot], but we had harnesses on, and oh it’s painful! So painful! S: But it was fun!

What was it like working with Sam Neill? T: Amazing. S: Really intimidating at ďŹ rst‌ T: Yeah, I was scared to meet Sam, really nerve-wracked. But after I met him he was just cool. S: He’s really funny. T: Yeah, he had this song he would sing to us every day, I guess to just relax us. It’s called The Ginga Song. S: [laughing] He made it up. [Sings “I’m a ginga, you’re a ginga too‌â€?]. He’s so funny, it was so much fun. And he’s so generous... like all the tips he gave us, and just so unselďŹ sh. It was really good having people there like that. T: Otherwise we wouldn’t have had a clue what to do with all these cameras looking at us. He was really reassuring. And it’s not your natural hair colour! T: I’m blonde. S: I’m boring brown colour. It’s kind of got a bit of ginge’ in it though, I couldn’t let it go‌ To read a preview of Under the Mountain, turn to page 29.

What was it like working with Weta Workshop? T: So cool. S: These days you see so much animation in ďŹ lm ‌ but it was cool how they had so much stuff right in front of you. Having the prosthetics was cool. T: And being able to look at it made it an easier job for us too, because we didn’t have to work with a blue screen, there was actually a scary person with all that stuff right there. S: The Weta team working on set were cool. And there’s so much work in it, I mean they’d have Oliver [Driver] in at four or ďŹ ve in the morning. And there was so much slime involved! T: The slime was awesome. S: Yeah, it was ultra-slime. We were covered in it most of the time. If there wasn’t enough on set Jonathan would conďŹ scate the bucket off the Weta team and would go “No! More slime!â€? and he’d be rubbing it on our faces‌ He loves his slime, he’s a real boy. Deep summer is when laziness ďŹ nds respectability – Sam Keen

S Something I love about Big Day Out is how psyched South Islanders get on it. Rightly so, there p aaren’t too many international acts that head down south. So why not make the most of having so many good acts in one spot for one day and make the journey north? For the Auckland peeps, when you get home and there are some random people tenting on your back lawn, just check the calendar – it’s probably Big Day Out. If that’s the case you should get a ticket yourself – you’ll bump into old friends, see your favourite bands and hear some new ones. Maybe even buy some over-priced water or hot chips. My hope is Blink 182 will be announced in the line-up. Dizzee Rascal is a draw card and I’m sure most New Zealanders want to see Muse as well as the cheeky and crude Lily Allen. Big Day Out is on a Friday so sort yourself out now so you get the day off and your colleagues work your shifts for you then send pxt updates of how much fun you’re having throughout the day. www.bigdayout.com

This is the 20th anniversary of Parachute and it should be the biggest and best yet with bands like Underoath and Switchfoot plus world-class dance groups like Prestige and so many more local and international acts as well as everything else you could think of. It’s another three days where people don’t sleep – instead it’s like a bunch of unplanned ash mobs happening continuously from 1am to sunrise. Wacky things happen at Parachute; the best thing I’ve seen at Parachute was a game unofďŹ cially call ‘Port-a-loo dash’. A group of groms were hyping each other up to run in a straight line across the front of a long line of port-a-loos, blindfolded. One grom dashed across and this older dude walked out of a port-a-loo and ung the door open while the running grom got the door in his face. Midnight Youth, Dane Rumble and Ivy Lies are on the line-up, and there’s heaps of fun and wacky stuff to keep you entertained, including the launch of the ZURF™ – a giant, inatable, open-ended cylinder which is manoeuvred across the water by people running inside it. Moby. I don’t mean that in a dramatic “Wow! Moby is comingâ€? way. I mean that more like “what the heck, who cares?â€? The answer is – a lot of people, but I’m not one of them. Moby aside, there are loads of other acts like John Butler Trio, Roots Manuva, and Empire of the Sun. Rhythm and Vines apparently was off the hook last time. I didn’t make it but my best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s little cousin did and he said he’ll go back even if Moby was the headlining act. So it must be pretty awesome at R’n’V. Also, Gizzy is the ďŹ rst place in NZ to see the sun rise. Great place to be on New Year’s Day and even if you miss the sunrise there is an epic three day party happening around you. www.rhythmandvines.co.nz

NZ loves drum and bass, roots, dubstep, house and techno. That is probably why thousands of people turn up each year for Phat. Good work South Island for utilising the beautiful scenery and putting on an event worthy of travelling a distance to get to. Pack your glow sticks, beaded necklaces and ďŹ re pois and get down South for New Year’s with Tiki, Kora, Concord Dawn and all the other names I’ve never heard of that you probably have. In the end Phat is just as much about the locations and vibe as the artists. The best bit is there is a river to wash your dreads in, or if you don’t have dreads you can wash the mud off your bare feet. www.phatclub.co.nz

Take Big Day Out, get rid of any band that is not from NZ, throw in a few more local acts, then move the whole thing from a stadium in the big smoke and put it on the waterfront of capital city. Does that make it sound stink or cool? NZ local acts rule. Tell me about your character, Steve‌ Before he gives in to this evil side of himself, he’s already a troubled kid, with not much of a family life. He doesn’t have a dad around, his mum’s into some bad things, he’s kind of a troublemaker at school and everybody knows this. He’s also always trying to get his friend, Darren, into trouble. He’s the one who tries to egg people on? Totally. Steve’s a pretty good guy until the end of the ďŹ rst book. How bad does he get? He’s bad. He straight up becomes Vampaneze. And those guys, man, they are bad asses. They are hardcore. They do what they want, when they want.

So he gets his own gang of bad dudes? Yes. Were you familiar with the books before getting the script? Yes. My little brother is 13 and has read all of the books. He’s told me the plot line of the next ďŹ ve because he has read them all and knows what’s going to happen! Weren’t you tempted to read a couple? No. I just read the script. I didn’t want to have any preconceived notions about what is in the books and how that might be different from the ďŹ lm. I wanted my thoughts to not be coloured by the story from the books. I wanted to read the script for what it is, and not think about differences. What’s been the best scene to shoot? Do you have any major action moments? There is a big stunt scene where the Vampire Clan and the Vampaneze clash. It is me and Chris [Massoglia], who plays Darren, the good guy in the movie. We attack each other and there is a huge action scene with these crazy wire stunts. That was so much fun.

How much of the stunt stuff did you do? Quite a bit. There is only one stunt that I didn’t do because my hours were up. Being a minor, we are limited to so many hours a day. Have you seen many vampire movies? Oh yeah. My favourite is The Lost Boys. I love that movie. I want to watch it again. I’ve seen it about ďŹ ve times already. If you could choose a path whose would it be? Darren’s or Steve’s? Steve’s! He is the hardcore one. He can do what he wants, when he wants.

9HAT S IT ABOUT THEN! If you long for the good old days of vampire movies without the stomach-churning romance, you’ll love Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. Based on the first three books in a series called The Saga of Darren Shan (by Darren Shan), it’s a dark and nightmarish fantasy-adventure. One night, 16-year-old Darren and his best mate Steve ‘Leopard’ Leonard find themselves at a travelling freak show. I’ve been chipping away at it for over a year now, so it’s well overdue. What have you got planned over the summer? We have a lot of shows over summer including, R&V, Matakana Highlife and Homegrown, but the tour I am most looking forward to is Coca-Cola Bands on the Beach, it should be absolutely epic! There’s nothing like doing shows on the beach in the middle of summer – it’s gold!

You were once with the Fast Crew cats, how were those days? Those days were awesome. We were very lucky with our success, and I learned so much about the music industry. I made some good contacts too, and this has deďŹ nitely helped me on my solo venture. We had some good times. Your music has this ‘fresh sound’ about it. Maybe it’s because I’m a fan but it sounds

What’s it like being in a band with all guys? It’s like being with a bunch of brothers, although sometimes it’s difďŹ cult because there’s some things you can’t talk about because you have different needs. Females in bands that are all men are quite often leads. What’s it like being different to that? I prefer it. I don’t have the singer personality and I love bass.

I deďŹ nitely still love the MC’ing aspect of writing, so there will always be a bit of that in what I do, but I really just wanted to push myself in a new direction and try something different. So I took up singing and playing the guitar. What’s your opinion on smoking? I used to smoke, but I quit three years ago. And honestly? It was the best thing I ever did. It was amazing how much better I felt!! To all those smokers reading this, you can give up! And you will feel like a new human when you do. They should get me on those no-smoking ads... What do you have to say to girls aspiring to get into a band? If you love what you do, want to reach out, make a difference, then don’t let things like putdowns affect you. You can’t let any of it affect you if it’s what you really want.

I met Emma at school; the teacher had double booked the music room and we were both too stubborn to leave so we just started playing Silverchair and Green Day, and we both knew all the same songs. Just after midnight and having hugged a few friends, and slapped a few high ďŹ ves I sat down and enjoyed a ginger beer. How do you usually prepare when you’ve got a competition coming up? I usually surf as much as possible and train up until the event.

Do you see surďŹ ng as something you do in your spare time or a potential career? I would deďŹ nitely like it to turn into a career but I’ll just have to see where it goes.

You’ve been selected to represent NZ at the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior SurďŹ ng Championships at Piha. Do you feel there will be added pressure on your shoulders to perform well in front of the home crowd? Yes for sure, but it will also be a real conďŹ dence booster knowing I’ll have the crowd’s support.

Where are some of your favourite surďŹ ng spots? My favourite break would have to be the Whangamata bar. But overseas I really enjoy surďŹ ng the D-Bar in Australia and Kuta Reef in Bali. What is your training and nutrition regime like? I run and do Pilates when there is no surf and I generally just eat healthy food, lots of fruit and vegetables. How do you balance school, work, friends and surďŹ ng? School is a bit hard at the moment because of exams and things but generally everything just slots into place. I’m lucky with my friends’ support because they know surďŹ ng is a big deal for me. I just go with it and try to ďŹ t everything in equally.

Eleven-year-old Sophie Clayton has collected for SAFE for the past three years and is keen to create awareness about animal rights issues for other young people in NZ. Sophie grew up with an awareness of how important it is to treat others (including animals and birds) with respect. When her grandmother told her about cruelty happening to animals even here in NZ, she immediately wondered what she could do to help stop it. “I was always told to be kind and considerate to animals and birds,� Sophie says.

“I think it’s a great chance to meet other people passionate about animals, and it’s lots of fun. In the past three years I have raised almost $400.â€? Collectors get the chance to wear an animal costume (Sophie prefers a pig or chicken costume) and are welcome to bring their friends and their dogs! SAFE’s national appeal co-ordinator Sacha Dowell says the appeal is the most important event in SAFE’s calendar. Raising over $300,000 annually, the appeal provides the bulk of SAFE’s income. With the whole country and over 1200 collectors involved, the appeal also requires months of planning. “Without [the appeal] SAFE would not be able to do the good work we do to stop animal cruelty,â€? says Sacha. Money raised from the appeal will go towards SAFE’s running costs and campaigns, including a world-class humane education programme that SAFE provides free for secondary schools. The latest textbook in the series focuses on the use of animals in entertainment: a ďŹ tting topic given the last wild animal (Jumbo the elephant) used in a NZ circus has just been released from a life of entertaining! 6>8=6 E46> At the age of seven, Sophie discovered vegetarianism, and is very strict about what she eats. “I do not eat any meat, eggs, ďŹ sh or anything with gelatine, and only eat vegetarian cheese. I cannot eat lots of different lollies as they have gelatine in them. It is very difďŹ cult when you want takeaways; I have to ask lots what is in the food. Not many people know about the vegetarian cheese.â€? For Sophie, vegetarianism is as much about ethics as it is taste. Traditionally, cheese is made with rennet, an enzyme found in the stomachs of calves. Vegetarian cheese uses enzymes from plants instead. “I just google the ingredients so I know if it is OK.â€? Despite none of her family or friends being vegetarian (except for the grandmother who introduced her to SAFE), Sophie is keen to let other people know about animal rights issues. As a student at Kamo Intermediate in Whangarei, Sophie has put on numerous speeches and school projects about animal rights. “I have learnt lots more through this, especially on things like the mulesing of the merino lambs/sheep, as I had to research it,â€? Sophie says. (Mulesing is the removal of strips of skin from around the buttocks of the sheep, which farmers argue is to prevent the infestation of ies). As a volunteer for SAFE, Sophie has helped with the last three annual appeals and with numerous information stalls at a mall in Whangarei.

As jewellery is such an intimate and often hugely difďŹ cult thing to choose for someone else, Eloise consulted with her mother often to try and create a collection that would reect her own personal tastes while really showcasing Eloise’s own creativity and innovation. They eventually decided that Eloise’s collection should include a necklace and bracelet from silver, and a cross pendant and ring from glass; materials and choices that threw up all sorts of challenges.

F>A:8=6 F8C7 6;0BB Although Eloise already knew a little about working with glass, she still had her work cut out for her with this project so she started experimenting; ďŹ ring and joining together different types of glass to try and ďŹ nd the best results for colour, shape, and especially strength. “I found that for jewellery it’s best to use glass with the same COE (CoefďŹ ciency of Expansion), otherwise cracks can occur that can affect the ďŹ nal look and create weak spots.â€? Once she felt conďŹ dent working with glass, Eloise started asking her mother more detailed questions on the shape, size and colour for the cross pendant – deciding on a simple cross made

Eloise’s concept drawings also helped her mother to choose the colour combinations, shape and feel of the squares. “She told me that she wanted the inside square to be different, so I drew up a page of cross designs with a variety of different colour combinations as well as different side proďŹ les, either at or rounded. We chose black for the centre and blue for the other squares as it’s my mum’s favourite colour.â€?

@D82: B8;E4A Eloise’s next challenge was to ďŹ nd the best way to connect the glass to a silver chain. She tested pressing silver between two layers of glass but this turned the silver green, so she trialled drilling and cutting a hole in glass but decided this would be far too intrusive to the delicate pendant she had made. After further consultation, Eloise and her mum both agreed that a simple silver bail glued to the back of the cross would be the best option to preserve the design. To complement the other pieces in the collection, Eloise created a simple silver necklace and jump bracelet designed as a matching set. The jump bracelet was made with thin interlocking rings so they didn’t look too chunky and overwhelming on her mother’s petite wrists.

For the necklace, her mum liked the idea of multiple pieces on one chain so three components were designed: a blue glass bead that Eloise made with her new glass skills, a link of interlocking rings to complement the bracelet, and a silver leaf that was made by coating a real leaf with 12 layers of art clay silver.

C74 A8=6 The ďŹ nishing touch, which tied the whole collection together, was a glass ring in the same deep blue as the pendant and the necklace, which was encased in silver. As the ring was quite large, the rectangular stone was ground to give a smooth, polished look that was comfortable and unobtrusive. The ďŹ nished collection has all the elements that her mother loves and Eloise feels that communication was a huge part of the project’s success. Her mum is blown away with what Eloise has accomplished. “I’m really impressed with the level of skill and craftsmanship that went into all the pieces and with the professionalism of my ‘jeweller’ that enabled me to get four beautiful pieces that can be worn in so many different ways. I’ve already received lots of good comments when wearing them.â€?

My favourite thing to do was to play Alex Kidd on the Sega and a tiny 14-inch TV. I also wanted to be a Phys Ed teacher... yup pretty stoked I changed my mind on that one. I’ve always been good at art, and design was the next area I wanted to develop in. I’m into all aspects of arts like ďŹ ne art, design, tattooing, photography, and also pop culture. My art teacher at Wanganui Intermediate was really good. I also took art, painting and graphics right through high school, and obviously my parents have always been really encouraging.

I used to love to ďŹ nger paint because it gave me an excuse to get messy, and my pictures didn’t have to look like anything in particular. I also enjoyed paper-mâchĂŠ and anything arty like scrapbooking. I used to make all my Christmas presents for my friends just from things around the house.

0C D2>; BAVI has a great mix of practical and theory based design teaching and our work is on a par with, if not better than, any other design institute in NZ. I wouldn’t study design anywhere else. The lecturers are all seasoned professionals in their chosen disciplines, and they are really invested in our success. There is a lot of pressure in the ďŹ rst year of the BAVI – you learn to self motivate pretty quickly. Looking back at old work and seeing the progress that you’ve made is really cool. There are really good people in my year, everyone’s pretty cool. It’s a very competitive environment but it makes the end result of your work that much better.

Coming to UCOL straight from high school I realised immediately that you are treated as an adult here, an equal. We learn about different types of photography, and are being equipped with the skills to handle any problem that arises. There are a lot of different specialisations in photography, from product to fashion to weddings. You can build up your own business or work as part of a team.

As a kid I was always the one with my mind in the clouds, spending countless hours outside swinging sticks around pretending I was a Jedi. I was never the sporty kid so I did a lot of drawing, playing with Lego and making stuff. I have probably used about a ďŹ fth of my life playing video games and watching movies. I always liked creating things, whether it was on paper or in my head – it all helped pump the imagination a bit. I chose animation because there is something really satisfying about coming up with an idea and giving it life. I love the way you can channel your mind, emotions and experiences into your art. All the games, movies, comics, are someone’s ideas and creations and I thought that animation would be the perfect path to showing the world what I can create.

I think I’ve always loved creating things one way or another. But my passion for design developed in college. I unked out of science and maths but seemed to be acing all of my art and design classes. Art, architecture, design and art history were what really kept me at school, besides my friends.

0C D2>; Studying at UCOL has taught me how to use my own initiative. In the industry I want to work in, you are expected to motivate yourself to get the work done. I’ve also learnt a great deal of respect for myself and school mates and how, if you put the yards in, it pays off – and this is something you can apply to day-to-day life. The most important thing I’ve learnt is how to research – how to ďŹ nd what people do and don’t like. In the ďŹ lm and game business you have to be two steps ahead all the time. Studying at this level has been life changing. The new mates and teaching staff are such an outgoing, interesting group of people and everyone is always willing to give each other a hand which makes for a really constructive environment. The atmosphere at UCOL is the most comfortable working environment ever.

In creative terms they push us in the right direction and always keep our idea development moving to create bigger and better things. We are always engaged in all the work other students are creating, we are constantly communicating with each other and gaining feedback. The best thing is that we are getting the conďŹ dence to get out into the real world and work to make the big bucks. Tertiary life is awesome, going to study every day. I love it. The people are a big part of it too. We all understand what each other is going through and we are all so supportive. Some of the highlights of my experiences so far include having work in a exhibition; walking away from a photography competition with both of my images getting awards; meeting really choice people and getting my name and work out there to a wider audience.

The original Red Steel was one of the launch titles for the Wii back in 2006. Unfortunately it received lukewarm reviews and was generally thought of as a pretty average game. Despite that, it sold very well – presumably it was bought by new console owners who wanted a little violent action as a way to relieve frustration after constantly losing at Wii Sports – and so Ubisoft are set to deliver a sequel in early 2010. Red Steel 2 looks like it will have a completely different tone to its predecessor, with the lame 1980s action-movie plot of the ďŹ rst game being ditched in favour of a plot inuenced by both Westerns and ninja movies – a

mix of genres that go together like peanut butter and mayonnaise (it’s a really nice combination – try it sometime!). The game has also embraced a bold, cel-shaded aesthetic that draws inspiration from anime and comic books. Perhaps more importantly, the controls – which were undoubtedly the most criticised aspect of Red Steel – look to have received a considerable overhaul, with MotionPlus support making the series’ trademark motion-controlled sword ďŹ ghting action much easier to pull off.

Super-stealthy operative Sam Fisher is back (and he now has a beard for 50% more scariness!) His daughter has been killed, and you can bet that skulls are going to be cracked in a nasty but silent way. One change that’s immediately noticeable in Conviction is an overhauled visual style. Whereas the previous games had plot interludes that frequently felt a bit clunky, Conviction utilises an immersive new system where mission objectives and information are projected directly onto the game environment, in a similar way to how place names are shown in the TV show Fringe. Gameplay-wise, the series’ stealth-action fundamentals have been reworked to create a more uid, decisive style of combat. A new feature will enable you to ‘mark’ multiple enemies, then take them all out in a single string of manoeuvres. Fisher has apparently spent his downtime between games watching DVD box sets of 24, as Conviction also features semiinteractive interrogation scenes that will look familiar to any fans of Jack Bauer and his sometimes heavy-handed techniques. I must admit, I don’t get all this brutal interrogation stuff – surely Fisher could get better results by bribing the terrorists with chocolates or something?

While playing The Legend of Zelda, have you ever thought “this is great and all, but I wish it was a bit more, you know... hardcoreâ€?? If so, Darksiders may be the game you have been waiting (or idly hoping) for. It will apparently play in a very similar way to Nintendo’s hallowed franchise, with the gameplay split between free-roaming exploration above ground and puzzle-oriented dungeons below ground. Only, instead of playing some half-pint kid in a green tunic, you will be controlling none less than War, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. After global civilisation is prematurely destroyed in some sort of cosmic administrative error, War descends to Earth to ďŹ nd out who’s responsible and let them know that their employment has been terminated with extreme prejudice. As a reection of this slightly more, ahem, Xtreme tone, the combat seems to be the one aspect that diverges most radically from the Zelda formula, being more reminiscent of games like God of War. There will be plenty of upgrades and fearsome weapons to unlock, including Ruin, your mighty steed. Hopefully you’ll be able to unlock Ruin very early in the game, as the thought of one of the horsemen of the Apocalypse waddling around on foot seems horribly undigniďŹ ed to me...

Stomping, fresh, drum ‘n’ bass sums up Trei’s new album Innuendo. Heavy bass lines owing under the sweet sounds from vocalists, including Lisa Tomlins and Thomas Oliver, make this one of the best drum ‘n’ bass releases this year. The album features that dirty-bass en-fueled, jungly drum ‘n’ bass sound, as well as some uplifting, liquid sounding tunes just in time for the festival season this summer. Trei has collaborated with a number of Kiwi drum ‘n’ bass legends including State of Mind, Southern Soul and Dose, giving each track a fresh edge with the album still owing well. This is one of those albums where it is easy to listen to the whole thing. Trei takes you on an eclectic, upbeat journey and Innuendo is a must have for any drum’ n’ bass fan – CAM CARPENTER

Step back an era or two and you’ve entered the world of Kiwi band (with a Scottish drummer) The Volunteers. These guys are an interesting bunch, with a bigger aim to make the world a better place through their music. This is a CD ďŹ lled with tracks of funk, soul and rock ‘n’ roll. The songs vary in styles, from faster songs with happy beats and melodies like Seveneight, to slower, darker songs like This Broken House. Seveneight is an instrumental with a cool sound. Somehow it seems to be a funked up version of Papa Roach’s Blood Brothers. It’s got some awesome riffs playing throughout the entire track. This band isn’t short of instruments or diversity. Multiple grooves is the easiest way to explain these guys and their CD. Though I don’t personally like the main singer’s voice, it is perfectly suited to their stuff and makes them unique. Honestly, if you like outdated music, funk with a twist of rock ‘n’ roll, or you want a different sound to listen to for a change, pick up a copy of Friends, Family & Fools – AROHA HUGHES

Something Awesome is the debut solo album from Kiwi MC David Dallas. Having made his ďŹ rst mainstream appearance as Con Psy on the classic remix of Scribe’s Not Many, David is quickly becoming a household name. His singles Indulge Me and Big Time have been buzzing on the radio and the Tube, creating a lot of hype for the album. These two add to a collection of quality tracks, with Dave’s skilful lyrics supported by top notch production and other Kiwi artists such as Devolo, PNC and Aradhna. The South Auckland native stays true to his roots, touching on relatable issues that reect his real life experiences rather than creating some extravagant persona, which is so familiar in hip-hop these days. He rhymes on everything from overcoming difďŹ culties to experimenting with weed. With a mix of heavy bangers like Big Time to soulful tunes like Turn it Around, he constantly shows inuences from the old-school. Something Awesome is textbook hip-hop at its ďŹ nest and David Dallas has most deďŹ nitely secured his position as one of NZ’s hip-hop greats – DAVID HUTCHESON

Overall I liked this book – it’s fun and informative about the Goth culture, busts the myths around stereotypes, and explains the Goth viewpoint. Sections on ‘how to behave at a Goth wedding’, ‘dealing with non-Goth roommates’ and ‘no, we don’t all think we’re vampires’ are helpful insights for dealing with Goths (and for Goths dealing with others, I would think). Sadly however, it does eventually blend into a general help guide – eg. ‘how to tell if your crush likes you’ – which is not speciďŹ c to Gothdom, and alienates the book for anyone post high school. Having said that, there are some passages many non-Goths would beneďŹ t from, speciďŹ cally ‘why being polite to people you don’t like is important’. For non-Goths, Venters has given an insight into their eccentric world and why well meaning comments like ‘nice costume’ are offensive and might provoke a bad reaction. I’m pleased to report that these fears are totally unjustiďŹ ed in the case of the big-screen version of Maurice Gee’s 1979 classic. The story has been updated to a modern setting, and the twins are older than in the story, but the essence of the tale – Kiwi twins, with the aid of a surviving alien and their own latent psychic powers, saving the planet from alien slugs hell-bent on destroying it – is kept as true as it could have been. The story gives a perfect balance of gritty realism and far-fetched science ďŹ ction, just scary enough for children to get goosebumps, and gripping enough for adults to stay entranced. Sophie McBride and Tom Cameron play the ‘twin dynamic’ beautifully – even ďŹ nishing each other’s sentences when I interviewed them for this issue! – and make captivating ďŹ lm debuts. Sam Neill is perfectly cast as Mr Jones, whilst Oliver Driver realises all the menace of Mr Wilberforce with terrifying – and at times comical – realism. Add to this the light-heartedness that Leon Wadham gives in his role as cousin Ricky, the impressive prosthetics provided by the infamous Weta Workshop, exploding volcanoes, shots that make Auckland look rather pretty, and some awesome (slimy) sets, and you’ve got a guaranteed summer hit every Kiwi can enjoy – ERIN YOUNG
