Winning ways to Wellbeing From October 5-11 it’s Mental Health Awareness Week, but what do you think that’s all about? Feeling good and having quality relationships, or depression and anxiety – or both? \ So often the general perception of mental health focuses on illness, even though the term ‘mental health’ is neutral. At the Mental Health Foundation we’re interested in promoting the positive experience of feeling well, of having good mental health or wellbeing. But what’s the deal with wellbeing? What makes it up and is that the same for everyone? The Foresight Project involved a whole bunch of people in the UK taking a good long look at wellbeing, talking to loads of people and writing reports about what wellbeing is and how to improve it. Finally they came up with the five ways to wellbeing that the Foundation is promoting this Mental Health Awareness Week: Connect, Give, Take notice, Learn and Be active. We like the five ways to wellbeing because they offer steps to actively improve your experience of life: simple actions that can make a real difference.

Connect. With the people around you, with family, friends, workmates and neighbours. Building these connections will support and lift you when times are tough and when things are going well.

Give. Do something nice for a friend, someone in your family, or a stranger. Thank someone for what they bring to your life. Smile. Take Notice. Be curious about the world. Remark on the unusual. Reflecting on your experiences, what you enjoy and what you’re interested in, will help you appreciate what matters to you.

Learn. Try something new − new music, food, or scenery. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Learning new things helps keep life interesting and fun. Be Active. Step outside, play a game, garden, dance! Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and which suits your level of mobility and fitness.

Computer addiction status: I was addicted to Need for Speed: Carbon on Xbox a few months ago and I literally slaughtered all the guys in my at. It was epic. I can’t live without‌ Food, air, water, my MacBook, the latest Kasabian album and The ElďŹ nator – my VW Golf. It’s an absolute fuel hoover, but I still love it. Vrrrooomm. In ďŹ ve years I want to‌ Hopefully not be too sad about being 26, by being a ďŹ sh and chip shop tycoon and wholly stufďŹ ng my face with pineapple fritters on a daily basis. On the side, I might look into utilising my communication degree and become a freelance photographer/journalist.

We’re doing pretty well.

The word is used so frivolously in today’s society that it can supplement your average hypochondriac’s list of achievements. Yet it is something so real that even psychologically debilitating habits can result from the least harmless, and even the most helpful, tools. But does it have to be debilitating or even traumatic? After scouring the internet in search of these people who have been ‘socially debilitated’ by said technological activities, it didn’t take long for me to ďŹ nd some self-confessed addicts. But ďŹ rst, the cold hard facts...

F7> 0A4 60<4AB. Don’t be surprised if you see your dad or Uncle John playing a game of World of Warcraft or Halo as around 44% of gamers are over 44 years old. What about Mum and your sister? About 48% of online gamers are female and the average female gamer plays for 7.4 hours a week. That’s just the average ones! Now you know who they are, one game that springs to the top of the pile in my search is World of Warcraft (WoW) – addictions related to the game are surprisingly common. A prospective PhD student claims he was forced to sell his computer after WoW took over his life to the point where his entry into a doctorate programme was jeopardised, his girlfriend walked out on him and his family and atmates had complained that he was distancing himself. An Auckland high school student claimed he was having dreams about WoW and would draw up strategies in class, and he briey dated a girl he met on WoW.

60<4AB 0=>=H<>DB WikiHow.com has numerous articles on how to combat your gaming addiction which features advice that is scarily similar to what you would get if you were an alcoholic. “Admit you have a problem. This may be hard, but accepting that [insert game name here] has taken over your life is the initial step into overcoming your addiction.� But is it really that bad? If you’re addicted to a game, what’s to stop you from doing other things in between? In fact, studies show that over 93% of

so-called gaming addicts read newspapers and books on a daily basis, while 64% go to gigs and the theatre weekly. So, maybe gaming isn’t so bad. But what about social networking?

<8G43 <4BB064B It’s copped criticism from professors and even President Obama, but really, how bad is it? I received a message from Darcy*, a 19-year-old uni student from Dunedin who said that the reaction factor of social networking is somewhat uplifting. “MySpace and Facebook gave me an excuse to re-invent myself as something I would never see myself being‌ The reactions I get from people [for photos and updates] really boost my esteem and seeing that little ‘4’ in a red box in the corner makes me feel like I am still involved with the world, even though I haven’t seen anybody in two days because I’ve been stuck inside studying or something. It’s addictive.â€? Another email I received was from Wendy*, a public relations student who said that although sometimes she’d be late for class, it was worth it as she would catch up with friends from home. She also pointed out that her loss of productivity due to Facebook and Twitter is worth it as PR work demands that she stay networked and in contact with relevant people. She said one of her lecturers even welcomed the idea, saying that, if used in the right way, Facebook is one’s own personal PR experiment. On the other side of the coin: “I almost lost my job. My fault I guess,â€? says Tim*, a senior employee at an established Auckland based graphic design company which, after years of stellar ďŹ nancial performance, was suddenly on the verge of bankruptcy. A consultancy ďŹ rm then monitored their usage for a week and found that only 15% of time spent in the ofďŹ ce (this included the boss) had billable hours, while the rest was spent on social networks.

Up-and-comings for the web addiction market include sites like StumbleUpon.com (a news media plug-in button that installs straight into your browser and tunes into your browsing habits); Digg.com (another social media site on which you can dig up and bury down newsworthy articles and photos); and Farmville (a Facebook application that lets you create a farm).

Dr Coker fronted a study on over 300 employees from various industries and found that the majority of those who used social networking sites during their working day were signiďŹ cantly more productive than those who stuck to their tasks. I have Bebo and Facebook which are the standard in social networking sites and which many teenagers have proďŹ les on; and research for assignments takes up time, as does playing Crazy Taxi and Farm Town. A squizz on TradeMe now and again and a peek to see what’s happening in the weird and wonderful world that is YouTube are part of my daily ‘diet’ – but does the time I spend on the net doing these things mean I’m the computer equivalent of a pill popper? We’ve all heard the stories of avid social networkers, budding gamers and general computer enthusiasts overdoing it. There’s no harm in keeping up to date with all the goings on around the world, but more and more teens don’t know when to say ‘when’. A recent, damning report by Dr Jerald Block, psychiatrist at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, singled out excessive gaming, viewing online pornography, and emailing and text messaging, as causes of a condition in the same league as a compulsiveimpulsive disorder. Dr Block even goes further to suggest that the computer-type disorder is so common that it should be a recognised mental illness.

Feelings of anger, irritation and even depression can occur when a computer is inaccessible. If things are getting just a little bit tense because you haven’t updated your Twitter in the last 10 minutes because you’re off to see Nana, this is a sure sign you’re experiencing withdrawal symptoms!

This is another part of computer addiction. The need for better equipment, the latest computers, updated software and more hours of use, are common amongst addicts.

Break the cycle If you spend hours on end on the computer, nearly burst a blood vessel when one isn’t in sight, are always wanting to update your gear, and have been a bit cranky recently, then you are an addict! Fear not, you can break the cycle and not become as attached to your computer. Here are a few easy-to-remember guidelines for computer use:

B70:4 8C D? Every 30-45 minutes get up out of your chair and have a bit of a ex of your muscles. Sitting down looking at a computer screen can have serious effects on your posture so shaking out all that strain and tension every now and then is good.

<8G 8C D? Lastly, everything in moderation! Instead of spending hours online at once why don’t you break up your time by cutting it into slots. Have a look on your social networking proďŹ le for a bit then go and do another task, like get the washing in for your mum!

Stock up with some facts and throw them at your parents next time they nag you to “stop wasting your time on that stupid game!� “Mum, Sims is teaching me valuable life skills and lessons such as multitasking and community values.�

For example, in a racing car game you might have your speed, your remaining NOS, your position in the race, the direction you should be heading, whether you should be speeding up or slowing down, how many laps you have to go, and whether you have the police chasing you. Those are just off the top of my head so I’m sure there are many more! Now, when you play these games, you have to take in all of this information at once. Part of improving at a game, from coming last every race to coming ďŹ rst, comes from being able to multitask and take note of many different things. To play a game successfully you need to be able to utilise all the different information given to you on the screen, at the same time! Then, without realising it, you apply these same things to other parts of your life.

People know you not for who you are in real life, but for who you have created yourself to be within the game. Online game communities function essentially the same as real-life communities, for the simple reason that humans are social. You ďŹ nd yourself talking to people for no other reason than to be friendly, and if someone seems interesting and you get along with them, you might become mates with them. Exactly like real life, huh? This social feature of online games gives you life experience that you would otherwise only gain from meeting new people, except it can be done from your computer chair! Talking to new people lets you hear about where they’ve been, things they’ve done, things they’ve seen‌ You just learn, without realising it!

This enables the game to have its own economy, and for players to make transactions with one another. I’m sure many of you have done this, maybe without realising. So, naturally, you sell it to them and make a proďŹ t. This is actually subconsciously teaching you the laws of supply and demand, and also teaching you how the share market and other markets work.

In my opinion Twilight is... the most amazing series of books, that sparks the imagination (example: Edward Cullen) but the biggest movie let-down. MY opinion of computer games is... they are great in moderation but ANYONE who plays them every day is addicted and that isn’t good.

1. Both. The internet is a wonderful resource when used correctly and it allows youth today to access information so much more easily and quickly. The internet has changed the way people are able to communicate with each other and this allows people to keep in touch with relatives overseas for example. However, I do believe that the internet has affected society badly by promoting such things as cyber-bullying, because youth in particular ďŹ nd it easy to hide behind the screens of their computers instead of facing their problems. 2. I wouldn’t be very upset but I can’t say that I would be very impressed either, and I would probably try to get my internet up and running as soon as possible. 3. I spend up to two hours a day online, but depending on what I’m doing then I may spend longer. 4. Both positive and negative. They are a great way to stay in touch with friends and know about events that are happening. 1. As with most things in life, the internet has deďŹ nite positives and negatives. On one hand, it’s a fantastic educational tool which has the potential to extend the knowledge of anyone fortunate enough to have access to a computer and a connection... On the other hand, it harbours horriďŹ c imagery, many untruths and helps terrible bands expose themselves to people who know nothing more about music than what they’ve learned from MySpace. 2. I’m a bit lost without my internet connection, to be honest. I live away from my family and being a student I can’t afford to be making toll calls all the time, so it’s a nice way to stay connected. Apart from that, I follow blogs and online comics of people I respect as artists, fashion designers, bakers, cyclists... all things that give me inspiration! I sometimes feel a little bit sad that I ďŹ nd more inspiration online these days than I do from ‘reality’, haha. The internet could possibly be the death of creativity. 3. DeďŹ ne ‘online’, because I’m constantly connected – even when I'm watching TV or cooking dinner I'm online. As I live away from my family, social networking sites have been a great way to keep in touch – a place to share photos, thoughts, events etc ... You looked pretty shocked when they read out your name, how do you feel about it now? Has it all sunk in? Ah yea, I think it is at last starting to sink in and I feel great, I feel over the moon. How has the whole process been for you? Needless to say the process has been brilliant and pretty perfect for me, and also for my playing and my conďŹ dence and song writing. I’ve been trying to make my mark as a songwriter in the past and this has kind of given me a big conďŹ dence boost and now it’s deďŹ nitely a possibility for me as a career I think. How long have you been playing guitar and singing? Well my ďŹ rst ever song was ‘The Warehouse, where everyone gets a bargain’ when I was three years old, so yeah I’ve grown up in a musical family. It’s always really been a part of my life, I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t. But I guess seriously playing, probably for about six or seven years.

totally unique way. If something happens to me I will deal with it by turning it into a song, and that counts for good and bad things. As a middle-class, 17-year-old who lives at home, you know, nothing has affected me too badly, but hopefully in the next few years some horrible hard times will lead to some good songs. Where would you like to be ďŹ ve years from now? I guess the ultimate goal would be making myself recognised as an international artist, you know that’s the very far dream, and go overseas and try to make it on the worldwide spectrum. But for now, I’m going to move up to Auckland next year, and in the short term I’m going to try and establish a name for myself as a NZ songwriter and just try and get my music out there, and see what people think of it and learn from my experiences. And, if that goes well, then see what happens.

Are there any musicians that particularly inuence you? There are people I listen to a lot and that I really admire as musicians but I guess my songs aren’t trying to be based on one type of music or on something that a musician has already done. I feel that my songs are a product of everything that happens to me and everything that I listen to, whether I like it or whether I don’t, because song writing is really just an externalisation of thoughts and emotions. Is there anything else which inspires you creatively? Life. My friends, my family, my recent girlfriend Jayme Fitzgerald, who was also a ďŹ nalist‌ some gossip there haha... What kinds of things do you write about? I have a few songs about girls, but also about different things really. If something has affected me, if I go through something, I write a song about it. I think musicians are a different breed of people, coz we deal with things in a

The ďŹ rst place winner would leave with $10,000 in Rockshop vouchers, a $5,000 grant from NZ On Air to record a single at York Street, et another $5,000 grant to make a video, a guaranteed 50 rotations of the single on radio station The Edge and a MySpace promotion package. The night was full of hilarity as MCs Dave Gibson from Elemeno P, and Drew Neemia from C4, kept the crowd energized and occupied as the bands set up. And halftime meant a stellar performance from Bang!Bang!Eche!, as well as a high-energy performance from Kingston, who took to the stage while the judges deliberated. Long Story Short kicked off the competition with some extremely catchy pop rock tunes, emphasised by a stage presence to be envied. They were followed by an equally energetic performance from East Auckland natives Hudson and the Rocketships, whose barefooted front man stole the show. Solo performer Jayme Fitzgerald impressed the crowd with her mesmerising songs and stunning voice which were accompanied by piano, guitar and harmonica. These Dancing Wolves gave the audience a healthy dose of indie rock, in which their guitar player made clever use of looping his memorable riffs. Third-place winners The Seed, from Hamilton Christian School, FairďŹ eld College and Fraser High School combined elements of electro-pop and rock, and delivered some amazing songs with powerful vocals, impressive solos and even incorporated a didgeridoo. From Mt Maunganui College, second-place winners A Few Words From Dave played catchy indie rock tunes with epic build-ups and breakdowns, lead by superb, emotion-ďŹ lled vocals. However, it was The Jesse Sheehan, a name which alludes to a whole band but in reality was comprised solely of singer/songwriter Jesse Sheehan from Wellington College, who took out the grand prize. He stole the audience’s and judges’ hearts with his sophisticated and thoughtful folk ballads, complete with haunting melodies and beautiful guitar playing. From his charming apology to the audience who began to clap before one of his songs was over, to his humble and shocked acceptance of his ďŹ rst-place title, Jesse was the star of the night and deserved to be chosen from the 681 bands who entered from across the country.

Dizzee, it’s been a hectic 12 months for you − you’ve had two number one spots in the charts, an NME award, as well as playing some of the world’s biggest festivals, including Glastonbury. It’s been mad like, as we are sitting here, my new single has just made it to the charts too, so that takes it to three now! It’s been a ridiculous year − it’s been crazy, really good! What can we expect to hear on the new album? It’s just got a BIG party vibe you know, it’s got a track on it with TiĂŤsto (voted World Number One DJ three times in a row), got a track on there with Shy FX, like a reggae soulful track, hip-hop – it’s just a really fun album. Awesome. Tell us more about your track with TiĂŤsto? It’s like really upbeat, funky, like electro mixed with techno kinda track! It’s called Bad Behaviour! I just really had a love for music so I just pursued it and found my way in to the music industry − it just kinda naturally happened you know! Did you ever dream of pursuing another career at all? The day I saw wrestling secrets revealed on TV was the worst day of my life. Having TV tell me wrestling wasn’t real was worse than a four-year-old telling you Santa isn’t real and that Bigfoot is a myth. I refuse to accept this information regarding Bigfoot. Speaking of big feet, Ted DiBiase Jr probably has big feet. Before the phone interview I got super nervous, kind of star struck I guess. I wasn’t sure if he would be a macho, ego-ďŹ lled beefcake like on TV or just another person with stories to tell. I soon found Ted to be a normal guy with tales to tell of growing up and how much he loves his wife, loves sushi and honours and respects his father. Where are you right now? At home with my wife in Mississippi What are your plans after this interview? I think I’ll go get some sushi; I love sushi and ... usually eat it about three times a week. So sushi then a movie with my wife.

So you are a third generation wrestler – Granddad was ‘Iron’ Mike DiBiase and of course your dad was the million-dollar man Ted DiBiase. Was there pressure for you to get into wrestling? My grandma was a wrestler too, Helen Hilt. Actually there was more pressure to not wrestle. I always respected my father’s wishes – we have a very, very good relationship, but I went to college, graduated and got a degree and then he said, “Well if you want to do it, have a shot,â€? so I did and here I am now. Who was your wrestling hero? As clichĂŠd as it might sound I’ve always looked up to my dad... he’s my hero. I did have other favourite wrestlers, I actually really liked Shawn Michaels, and I was also a big Bret Hart fan. As a kid what was your favourite ďŹ nishing move? Tell me something you know about NZ? I know that Temuera Morrison lived in NZ, he starred alongside me in The Marine 2. It’s a straight-to-DVD (says laughing). Other than that, I hear NZ’s beautiful; I have been once but didn’t get to see much. I deďŹ nitely want to come back and visit. Now, The Marine 2, that’s your ďŹ rst movie? Being in movies and wrestling you must have people coming up to you on the streets all the time. What is the weirdest thing a fan has ever said or done to you? I’m looking at it right now. Here in the States there is a place in the mall called Build a Bear, and you can go in and actually build your own bear. And this fan built a bear and had sewn on these tights that said ‘priceless’ exactly like mine and had all the tape, knee pads, the boots, everything. It was a young female and she gave it to me in an airport. You squeeze it in its paw and it says ‘Oh Teddy, I’m your number one fan, I love you so much’. It was kinda creepy, a bit attering but it deďŹ nitely weirded me out. What does it feel like working with Shawn Michaels now? He was a hero of yours as a kid and now you’re wrestling him and taking the sweet chin music from him... Ah, I’ll tell you, it’s an honour... it’s a very humbling experience. You gotta take a bow to this man. Look at the matches he’s had with Brett [Hart] – in the Iron Man match they went for more than an hour – he’s been part of so many WrestleMania moments, moments that have made wrestling what it is. It was evolving into this beast that it is and now just being in the ring with him, creating more moments for the fans to enjoy and remember and talk about the next day and years to come. ALL ALL TIME TIME LOW LOW When and how did you all meet? I met Jack in eighth grade, so we would’ve been about 13, and we both started playing guitar together just randomly. We met Rian and Zack in high school, formed the band around then and we’ve been playing music ever since!

What is your point of view on smoking? None of us smoke, I ďŹ nd it pretty pointless. Because of my voice, I can’t smoke anything because it just messes it up. If you’re a singer, don’t go anywhere near anything that emits smoke!

What are your inuences as a band? At the beginning it was mostly bands like Blink-182 and New Found Glory. Now that we’re playing our own music we’re more inuenced just by real life in general.

If you could be invisible for a day and not be detected, what would you do? I would look at you naked.

What’s it like doing covers of other bands’ music? It’s really fun reinventing old songs. We haven’t done that many covers but we found it a challenge to make the songs as catchy as they are originally. What is one song you’d love to cover? Probably If You Seek Amy by Britney Spears. Who usually writes your songs? It’s usually a joint effort. I wrote most of the songs on the new record, but usually we just sit and toss ideas around and come up with the music together. What are the most common topics you use for your songs? Um, women... occasionally something heartfelt. In some of your songs you use the names of girls. Do those names mean anything to you or are they just randomly chosen? Jaesy and Maria have meaning, but Holly is about Hollywood, the city, etc... but we’re kinda hoping people catch on to that themselves. Where are your favourite and least favourite venues to play? The best place is probably St Louis. The worst – that's tough... Oh, deďŹ nitely the Masquerade in Atlanta. The bottom oor was actually caving in. What’s one of the funniest or craziest things you have done together? We’ve gone swimming naked, tubing naked. Pretty much anything crazy we do involves us taking our clothes off. What’s the biggest challenge to you as a band? Staying original in such an overpopulated genre. It’s not like we’re trying to reinvent the wheel or anything, but you don’t want to sound like every other band. I think, so far, we’ve done a pretty good job at it. With the heavy stereotyping in games, there is a danger that we presume what we see on the screen is real. If we see a black man shooting a white man or an immigrant ripping someone off, again and again, there is a chance we’ll believe that it happens in real life. A lot of traditional media use stereotypes, but this isn’t just a static picture in a newspaper; if you see something on a screen, talking, moving, acting like a real person, and you are interacting with it, then it’s likely that you’ll remember it. Most of us want to see ourselves represented on the screen as successful, happy and doing general all round ‘good things’, but the reality is, if you aren’t white or Asian, it’s likely that you’ll see yourself as a victim, dying ďŹ rst and in loud, explosive ways. Better yet, you could be the antagonist, who is seemingly genetically programmed to murder, deal and rape. Imagine how it feels seeing someone who looks like you getting their head blown off by a rocket launcher because they robbed a bank, when, in the game, their character has been designed as a bank robber. Like it or not, we are affected by these images and portrayals, and it affects the way we think, and the way we see other people. It may not be such a hugely obvious issue but, especially for younger gamers, it can affect the way they start to see the whole wide world.

Things have come a long way since the Atari 2600 and games like Space Invaders. Nowadays, that 2D moving image with a background track of polyphonic music has evolved into a high deďŹ nition, seamlessly animated, clear and crisp sounding, gaming experience; and the video game industry has become a multi-billion dollar business. While the industry grows so does the debate about the effects of playing video games. While some studies have shown it can have positive beneďŹ ts, others show it can also lead to feelings of isolation, health issues and aggressive behaviour. One study, Fair Play? Violence, Gender and Race in Video Games, produced by Children Now, looked at the top ten selling games in the US and highlighted the potential dangers of the use of ethnic stereotypes.

?DCC8=6 ?4>?;4 8=C> 1>G4B Fair Play found that when we look at the portrayal of particular ethnicities in video games, some patterns emerge. More than half of all characters are white. Whites and Asians are overrepresented, whereas everyone else is underrepresented. Effectively, all the other ethnicities are shoved into the corner. When they are not being marginalized, African American and Latino characters are usually seen as criminals or lowly citizens who cause trouble. PaciďŹ c Islanders also fall into the same category, as cheap, underhanded thugs, while Asians are likely to be wrestlers or ďŹ ghters, and Italians part of organised crime.

Gamers used to be stereotyped as guys living in their family basement with pocket protectors. Today video games are being played by more and more, and younger and younger, people. Game developers have a responsibility to start reecting a more truthful reality, because there are no extra lives in the real world.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most controversial games ever released and also one of the most proďŹ table. GTA IV features Niko Bellic, an Eastern European war veteran who arrives in the US in search of the American Dream. He soon becomes enmeshed in a seedy underworld of gangs, crime, and corruption. Niko is Caucasian, 30 years old and a hot-headed gangster. He has a thick accent and is very handy with a rie. His CV boasts murder, grand theft auto, kidnapping, assault, smuggling and prostitution. The other minor characters offer a variety of racial stereotypes, from the African American gangster to the Latino drug dealer. Not to be left out, the women are all over-sexualised, violent and generally depicted as idiots, while the immigrants (Russian, Italian and Irish) are painted as money-hungry, heartless criminals. As a player you aren’t just passively watching, but actually interacting with this underworld, carrying out various crimes and missions. There is a danger that people start to believe some of what they see, as if GTA reects the real world. This is not helped by the ever more realistic graphics and the fact that the game is based upon the real life New York City. The worst part is that when these issues are raised game developers and some gamers usually criticise the complainers as hyper sensitive and that these are ’only games’.

<40= F>A;3 BH=3A><4 ‘Mean world syndrome’ explains how the media can make the world seem a darker and crueller place than it actually is. The term was coined in the late 60s by George Gerbner, who was one of the ďŹ rst people to research the effects of television on society. He found that people who watched lots of television tended to think of the world as a scary and unforgiving place, and felt they needed more protection than is actually necessary. Today ‘mean world syndrome’ relates to all media, which covers television, movies and video games. Especially video games! A number of games are set in dark, inhospitable places, for example, the Fallout series of games. They are set after a nuclear fallout, and the world itself is mostly rubble and is overrun by the savage remnants of humanity. Then there is Grand Theft Auto, which creates a world where the only way you can survive is through murdering and stealing. Play these games too long and you start worrying about what could be hiding around every corner.

When I was in school I wanted to be a doctor but later I inclined more towards research and the experimental side of science. Science was one of my favourites and I used to enjoy working in labs. I was very interested in how and why chemicals work together to make particular things.

?0BB8>= 5>A B284=24 This curiosity started my passion to learn more, and that’s why I came to NZ to study further. My dad advised me to study computers, so I did some papers. I got good scores in it but didn’t enjoy it that much. So I decided that science was the right ďŹ eld for me. I studied the National Diploma in Science Level 6 at UCOL. It was a twoyear programme but I ďŹ nished it in one and a half by taking extra credits each semester. Doing experiments in practical classes was one of the best things. The hard bit was working on assignments, as I was working part-time along with full-time study.

6>>3 BCD55 The programme at UCOL has helped me a lot. It improved my basic lab skills and made me competent to work in today’s industry. I got my ďŹ rst job at Fonterra Research Centre, which I think was only possible because of the knowledge I got at UCOL. The best part of tertiary life is meeting and knowing people from different countries and cultures. Also, as a person I became better at time and money management. Apart from studies it gave me an opportunity to grow as a person and learn to survive on my own, which is hard work but fun at the same time. I’m deďŹ nitely more conďŹ dent that I can achieve whatever I want now. I would deďŹ nitely recommend UCOL because the lecturers are very helpful, it’s more practically oriented, and the course is well structured – it teaches you all the necessary skills required to enter into the industry.

I was far away from my family and I missed them all the time – it was a bit hard to settle in to a completely new environment. Then living alone here, working and studying, made it even harder. But my strong desire helped me to complete it successfully. This whole journey has made me stronger and more able to set much higher goals in my life. The people around me at UCOL – lecturers, friends and the international student coordinator – were very supportive and helped me all the way through my programme. ;854 05C4A BCD3H After graduating, I worked at Fonterra Research Centre, Palmerston North for 18 months as a lab technician. My whole experience of working at Fonterra was great. I was hired on a contract basis and then, based on my performance, I got a full-time job. This was the best moment of my career so far. Recently I moved to Auckland to work for SGS New Zealand Ltd, in a more challenging role. As a lab analyst, I analyse different food products for different purposes. Looking at the nutritional panel of a product and comparing it with actual ďŹ gures is always very interesting. What I enjoy most is working with and troubleshooting the analytical instruments such as HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) and GC (gas chromatography).

2>D;3 C78B 14 H>D. The ideal person for this career would be someone who has a strong interest in science and a good practical hand. You should be curious to know and learn more. You must have patience and pay close attention to detail. Trust me, it’s a real test of your patience when you work for hours and, at the end, your experiment fails or you don’t get the desired results! From my life experience I believe everything is possible but you need to know the right way of doing it. So to start with I suggest ďŹ rst knowing your interests. What do you like doing? Find out what you really want and stick to it. If you’re not sure, get advice from a career counsellor. Goal setting and good time management are very important. Game development is a small but growing industry in NZ and Chris luckily had the right skills in the right place at the right time. “Chris took the initiative and got involved with our ďŹ rst project, Dragon Master Spell Caster, a game for WiiWare,â€? says Stickmen Studios CEO Wil McLellan. Chris is now an integral part of the Stickmen team. “Chris has the right attitude. He’s hard working, has great problem-solving skills, and is a hugely talented animator and modeller. He’s exactly what we needed.â€? As lead artist, Chris’s work covers the full spectrum of game development, from taking concept art and producing detailed 3D models and then animating them for game use. He works closely with programmers to ensure it all creates the best possible effect.

While the students remain focused on their work there is a palpable atmosphere of excitement and anticipation in the room. Environments like this often lead to exciting outcomes and teacher Alexia George is impressed with the efforts her class have shown during their 10-week Hard Materials Technology unit which has required her students to come up with the next generation in skateboard design.

A40; BCD55 It all began when Alexia wanted to provide her students with something that would engage them and provide them with ‘real life skills and experiences’. So, she created a partnership with a local skating business, allowing students to create, develop and test new skateboard designs. Alexia approached local Cheapskates owner and former competitive skateboarder Dave Green who, as a Kapiti College graduate, was excited to be coming back to his old stomping grounds “to give something back�. After seeing what the class was doing he was impressed and decided to provide extra encouragement by offering a set of new skateboard trucks and wheels for the team with the best overall skateboard designs by the end of the term. The winners would have to show a high level of innovation in their design and prove that their skateboards could perform well.

SKATES ON boards which were then taken to the band saw and cut around with a one centimetre border left for mistakes and ďŹ nal touches. Work began with hand tools to create smooth rounded edges and the boards were eventually sanded down ready for the graphics, which brought the ďŹ nal signature touch to each board. With the project nearing completion the pressure was on for the students, with many choosing to spend their free time at school to work on their boards. “The teacher actually had to tell us to leave a couple of times,â€? one student said.

0C C74 ?>8=CH 4=3 On the last day of term, the class headed to the local skate park, where the grip tape, trucks and wheels were put on and the boards put to the test. The winning team were chosen for their board’s performance and unique style as well as the excellent teamwork they showed throughout the project. Dave Green was also blown away by the class. “This project was great because the students got to do something they were really interested in and were involved right at the pointy end, making innovative, well executed designs.�

?A>C>CH?4B With an added level of competition, the students got into teams and researched skateboard production techniques. Once they felt they had a good grasp on the fundamentals they began working on the basic design for their prototype board. The students’ biggest challenge was to get their heads around the complex graphs needed to show the curvature of the boards. Once a workable design was drawn up the next step was to construct male and female moulds to create the shape they wanted. With the moulds ready the class began experimenting with different thicknesses of plywood to be glued together and pressed between the moulds, creating the basic board shape. To generate the required pressure for this, the class needed a solution that was going to be fast yet affordable. A little innovation led to the use of an automobile bottle jack within a wood and metal frame.

Left 4 Dead 2 is releasing only a year after the release of the original Left 4 Dead, which is probably something of a record for the famously fastidious and slow-moving Valve. While the game’s visuals and gameplay style do not seem fundamentally different from its predecessor (presumably code was re-used to cut down on development time) there’s still a large amount of new content, including four new player characters and new scenarios for them to struggle through. Melee combat has been added, so you will be able to battle zombies hand-to-hand with improvised weapons like frying pans and cricket bats. Aces at the original Left 4 Dead will have to alter their strategies, as a host of new Infected types, which aim to separate players and disrupt group tactics, will also make their debut. Oh, and there’s zombie clowns. With squeaky shoes that attract more zombie clowns. Excuse me, I have to go and shudder a bit.

There’s not actually all that much new content in Episodes from Liberty City, which is actually a compilation of two previously released downloadable episodes: The e Lost and the Damned d and The Ballad of Gay Tony. The pack, which doesn’t require the original GTA IV to play, should contain around 20-30 hours of criminal hijinks. It’s nice that these hese episodes are now available for those who lack highspeed internet connections nections or generous data caps. Which, incidentally, is probably the majority ty of web users in NZ. Due to our country’s try’s miserably underdeveloped internet infrastructure NZ gamers are being asked ed to buy into a new system of digital distribution that we don’t really have the he capacity for. It’s a shame that physical releases of downloadable content like this are the exception rather than the norm.

Blood Bowl is one of those brilliant ideas that could only have come from Games Workshop, the creators of the vastly popular Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 miniature wargames. It’s like American football with lashings of violence and anarchy, and instead of clean-cut professional athletes you have orcs, vampires, trolls, ratmen and all the other gloriously warped inhabitants of the Warhammer Fantasy universe. Cyanide’s video game version looks to be a faithful adaptation of the original boardgame, with the addition of real-time play and online multiplayer leagues. Actually, reviews have suggested that the game is perhaps a little too faithful, and somewhat intimidating for newcomers, so if you’re interested in Blood Bowl you might want to take a look at the rulebook for the boardgame: it can be downloaded for free at the Games Workshop website. Here’s hoping that if this does well we’ll see more of Games Workshop’s other cult games, like Space Hulk or Necromunda, receiving the video game treatment.

Back in the far-ung past of the late 1990s (hey, by video game standards it counts as a long time ago) Bioware produced Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2, both of which are now considered as classics and two of the greatest role playing games ever produced. Dragon Age: Origins has been touted as a ‘spiritual successor’ to the Baldur’s Gate games, aiming to combine their expansive gameplay and epic storylines with the interface improvements and high production values of the modern era. I do think that the technical demands of modern games – high-resolution graphics, full voice acting and so on – make it difďŹ cult for the vast worlds and gigantic quests of old-school RPGs to be convincingly reproduced today (at least not without a huge budget). Still, if Bioware pull it off they may end up producing a truly special game. This should give you an idea of what the game’s overall plot is like – a mashup of ideas and tropes from cheesy action movies and other video games (Ninja Gaiden and Resident Evil seem to be particularly inuential) that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The game’s visuals are pretty good from a technical perspective, with nice lighting and textures and very nice animation and story-boarding courtesy of anime studio Production I.G. This graphical competence is backed up by a listenable score and solid sound design. Ninja Blade lacks artistic air, however. The mutant enemies you’ll encounter are all rather uninspired – you’ll most likely have seen their like in numerous other games. Also, the ruined Tokyo is a pretty drab place. There are a couple of visually interesting levels – one mission takes place on and around a mid-air cargo jet, and the mist-shrouded arena where you ďŹ ght the ďŹ nal boss is quite striking. In general, though, you’ll go from grey buildings to grey industrial areas to grey caves and see very little of any interest. The bulk of the gameplay consists of hack-and-slash melee combat. Generally, the combat controls well and has good variety; there are three varieties of ninjitsu magic to use, and your swords can be upgraded to unlock new moves. Ninja Blade is quite forgiving on Normal difďŹ culty, and unlike more difďŹ cult action games you don’t have to pay a lot of attention to blocking or dodging enemy attacks. Boss battles, which feature very heavily in the game, are signiďŹ cantly more frustrating. Camera angles tend to be angled very low during these ďŹ ghts, wreaking havoc with your depth perception and making it difďŹ cult to dodge projectiles. To make matters worse, bosses, especially towards the end of the game, insist on ďŹ lling the screen with smoke, ďŹ re, and other graphical effects to the point where it is sometimes impossible to see where your character is. Add in some collision detection and targeting issues, and the boss ďŹ ghts become annoying ordeals rather than the epic events they should be. The saving graces of the boss battles are the Quick Time Events. QTEs seem to have fallen out of favour recently, most likely due to overuse in recent years. Ninja Blade actually employs them well, though. The feats you pull off – surďŹ ng on a missile, riding a motorbike across ying debris, throwing chunks of skyscraper and so on – are endearingly over the top, and provide satisfying conclusions to the trying boss ďŹ ghts. It also helps that the QTEs actually feel like an integral part of the gameplay rather than a tacked-on element, as is too often the case with other games.

Ninja Blade also asks you to do some basic acrobatic platforming, in the vein of Prince of Persia. I quickly grew to hate any section of the game that required wall-running, as there seemed to be problems with the controls. My character would repeatedly unstick from walls and plummet to his death even though I was sure I was pressing the correct buttons. Ninja Blade isn’t a title that I would unhesitatingly recommend − the gameplay has some obvious aws, and can sometimes verge on infuriating. Still, the game as a whole is very entertaining, and you could do a lot worse if you just want a way to act out your hidden ninja fantasies (it’s alright, everyone has them).

‘A sickly-disturbing, darkly-comic thriller’... This is probably the ďŹ rst time I’ve agreed entirely with a book’s tagline. Especially the sickly disturbing part. Anyone who knows me knows my love of thrillers and horror. I’ve read a lot of books, seen a lot of movies, even bought a bunch of action ďŹ gures. But there was something about this book that was... unsettling. It centres on 15-year-old John Cleaver, a boy in a town suddenly plagued by vicious murders. The problem is he hasn’t made up his mind if he wants to stop the killer or help increase the death toll. Detailed autopsies and murders are one thing Wells excels at, but the psychological analysis of a sociopath on the verge of becoming a murderer makes this book really quite amazing. For the ďŹ rst time in years I’ve felt anxious reading a book, wondering if John will save his neighbours or ďŹ nally snap. The fantasy sprinkled over the top of the demonic villain doesn’t do much to mask the disturbing possibility that another teenager out there could be struggling with their own murderous impulses, and may be in a town near you – DAVID OSTEN GIFFORD

Banquo’s Son is set 10 years after the coronation of MacBeth. This is the TK Roxborogh take on what happens after Shakespeare’s MacBeth. I do not really enjoy Shakespeare for many reasons, but this is not like Shakespeare. The story follows Fleance, Banquo’s son, as he journeys through the land where he grew up, trying to ďŹ nd where he should be in life after seeing visions of his dead father. This book is really good. Sure at times I was confused as to what they were saying, but I got the drift after a while. Once I started reading it was hard to stop. The characters are loveable and believable. This story seems so well thought out that I even forgot it was based on Shakespeare. When it ended, I wished it was longer so that I could read more. It was amazing. I have never before been so close to tears while reading a book. Banquo’s Son should deďŹ nitely be introduced into the Shakespearian section of the school curriculum. What can I say? It’s one of the best books I’ve read! – ANNIE HAWKER

Jonno Austin is on an experience of a lifetime after winning a trip to South America to view a total eclipse of the sun. Times are difďŹ cult though. With locals on a rampage protesting their treatment by the government, Jonno’s fantastic viewing encounter is laced with a sense of urgency to get home as soon as possible. The ight home brings a sense of relief, until Jonno, his fellow astronomers and everyone on the plane are held hostage by a pair of vigilantes. Laden with wit, opinion, humour and more, and coming from the perspective of a teenage boy, Fire on High is easy to relate to and enjoyable to read. With a rapid storyline to keep your attention on high alert and space facts to make you exclaim “oh, really!?â€? this is a superb book that anyone will love – JORDAN HARRINGTON

But with Harry’s survival and return, things are certain to change. Helen’s only constant is the family horse, Ginger, who lovingly walks her to school every day, but is very old. Around her, Helen’s family is collapsing, piece by piece. This is a good story, with everything from teenage drama to war, but things are thrown at you with absolutely no warning whatsoever. It is full of shocking events that never bring Helen down – she keeps going, despite adversity. So even though it is quite difďŹ cult to read because there isn’t one big event that the story leads to, Helen is a character that many of us can relate to. She shows us how we can all deal with everything that life throws at us – HANNAH ROBSON

Class follows four characters that are all part of ‘Downey House’, a girls’ boarding school. The book mainly follows Maggie Adair, a Welsh teacher from an underclass area, who has come to explore this high-class school, discover herself and all the while keep a good relationship with her long time partner Stan. It also follows Veronica Deveral, the headmistress, who has a secret that could destroy her high-strung reputation; Fliss (Felicity) Prosser, a young teenage girl who doesn’t want any part of this preppy school; and Simone Kardashian, an oversized Indian girl who is in attendance from a scholarship. Miss Adair ďŹ nds it very hard at ďŹ rst with difďŹ cult students misbehaving, an old-fashioned deputy head-teacher June Starling who is always looking down at her, and always being under pressure from Miss Deveral to be her best. Finding support from her partner Stan and her family seems out of the question since they all hate the fact she’s left them for a year. Even after making friends with the chirpy French teacher Claire, things don’t seem to get any better. The whole school is under pressure from the inspectors doing their rounds of private schools, but it starts looking better when a mixed musical with the boys’ school is started by Maggie and David. But can things go well for long especially when one of her main characters is shy and an outcast, one doesn’t want to be part of it, one girl is trying to sabotage the whole show and Maggie is having mixed feelings between Stan and David? This is an interesting book but very slow at the beginning and quite frustrating, and one can’t help but be irritated by the many spelling and grammatical errors throughout the novel. The book however does convey outcast issues well: girls’ insecurities when they are larger than all the other skinnier girls, the emotions of not wanting to be somewhere, and confusion in one’s self. It is an interesting book with some good points, but there are unfortunately many low points – AROHA HUGHES

Oh how Twilight-ďŹ lled the world has become now that the horriďŹ c ďŹ lm version of such an incredible saga has been released. Who remembers what the world was like before every girl had a crush on vampires and every novelist in the world began attempting to ďŹ nd a new angle on vampire love? Not me. But I sure as hell have been waiting eagerly for this fourth book in the Vampire Academy series to be released because I believe someone, at last, has found this new angle and all should bow down to Richelle Mead’s Blood Promise. Ahh, the fourth book that Vampire Academy fans have been impatiently waiting for since the dreadful ending to the third book, Shadow Kiss. Blood Promise is everything it was hyped up to be and more. For once, I was truly impressed by a sequel that was nonetheless about vampire love! Rose’s promise to Dimitri has lead her to Russia, and as usual, she is getting herself in all kinds of trouble, scouting out moroi (vampires) and dhampir (moroi guardians) alike, searching desperately for any leads on Dimitri’s home town that has a peculiar reputation for ‘blood whore dhampirs’ (female dhampirs that allow moroi men to drink their blood whilst sleeping with them). It’s an action-packed, extremely heartrending adventure and Rose is tested to the limits. This is a book you will never ever want to put down; it will make you pace impatiently for 2010 and the release of Spirit Bound, the ďŹ fth book in this spellbinding series − RHIAN LAWRENCE

C74 ;0BC >;H<?80= 1H A82: A8>A30= ‘Amazing’ probably isn’t a word I would use to describe this novel. I wouldn’t use exciting, gripping or original either. This is the ďŹ fth book in the Percy Jackson series, where the ancient Greek gods battle amongst each other in modern times. Percy Jackson, the half-god son of Poseidon, is in the middle of it all as he tries to prevent the Lord of the Titans from taking over Mount Olympus (now located in New York). Sure, the premise is somewhat entertaining, but Riordan doesn’t have the air to pull it off. His words are dully strung together, recording battles and missions with a clumsy style he must assume represents how teenagers these days speak. The style may be bland and contrived, but the plot doesn’t give much opportunity for applause either. A camp for those who have magical abilities, an ancient prophecy given to a teenage boy, an assortment of wisecracking mythical creatures to help guide the hero to embrace his destiny... It all sounds so familiar. I wouldn’t go so far as to say this is a bad book, but if you were looking for an example of mediocrity, this would be it – DAVID OSTEN GIFFORD

This is one of the best CDs I’ve heard in a while, though that could be because most music these days is the same and this is a little bit different – it’s actually about the music and emotions. It’s more piano based with no hard-out drumming, pulsing guitar and thrumming baselines. Tracks such as Life Gets Beautiful are catchy, have awesome lyrics and can be listened to in both the best and worst of moods. This music can bring you out of the darkest moods, be played in an undisruptive manner in the background or just make you happy. If you want a change in tune or want to listen to something peaceful, pick up this track. I really love this CD. If you like bedtime music on the iPod add some of these tracks! Their sophomore rrelease Black Brown White is out now and is bound tto be a summer BBQ hit. It speaks the true sound of funk, fused in with that laid-back dub sound we K Kiwis love.

The vocals are soft and sultry, enticing you to listen more, and the big band music behind emphasises that feel of attraction to the music which caresses your ears. The lyrics and tender treatment of each verse and chorus make you want to lie down, close your eyes and bob your head along to these smooth sounds. Being one hundred and ten percent Kiwi, this band creates a good image of NZ musical talent, which, if we truly face it, we’ve lacked recently. This may not really be my kind of music but the mellow beats do make for great Sunday relaxation – RHIAN LAWRENCE

18;;H C0;4=C 888 Billy Talent’s third album III takes the Canadian quartet to an exciting new level with their sound, as they move slightly away from the well known punk delivery of their past efforts, Billy Talent and II, towards something that is more akin to the genres of heavy rock and grunge. Ben Kowalewicz has swapped many of his trademark screams and shrieks for a more melodic vocal delivery, while the rest of the band have slightly tweaked their sound in order to convey their musical inuences – many of which align with their producer Brendan O’Brian’s prior producing credits, which include the likes of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots, to name but a few. While there has been this slight, yet notable, change in Billy Talent’s sound the progression seems truly natural and their punk rock roots are deďŹ nitely not lost. The album delivers some brutal tracks complete with powerful drumming, distorted driving bass lines, complex and catchy guitar riffs, as well as the unforgettable sound of Kowalewicz’s voice spitting out his thoughtful lyrics – ASHLEIGH HOPE

The Tropic Rot is extremely aggressive at times, yet it gives the listener some surprisingly mellow and beautifully melodic moments to break up the assault of furious guitars, relentless drumming and soul-crushing screams. While there are these rougher moments in the album (the numerous breakdowns, which sound more like listenable alternative rock than anything which a typical hardcore band would play), they deliver the melody and hooks necessary to make it an accessible and memorable masterpiece.

Front man Jeffery Moriera will blow you away with his ability to change from gut-wrenching roars to haunting singing within moments. This album is deďŹ nitely worth a listen, and as it is highly varied it will appeal to fans of punk, metal, hardcore and alternative rock – ASHLEIGH HOPE

With lyrics such as ‘I’ll pick out the most beautiful cofďŹ n for you‌ I’ll douse it with gasoline to make sure when you leave this place that you leave it up in ames. When the smoke ďŹ lls your lungs and your body starts to decay and you blend into the earth I hope it hurts‌’ Hmmm, very nice sentiment there. Though there are a few somewhat ‘darker’ lyrics, all in all I enjoyed this. Seth’s voice can get on the annoying side at times, and their version of Ne-yo’s Closer does not work as well as you’d think it would. At times I did feel like busting a few moves *cough*, so if you love Vegas but can’t afford the plane ticket, just buy this album! – ANNIE HAWKER

Four Year Strong. After writing a few songs on their own, Four Year Strong were asked to perform on the Punk Goes Pop 2 album with their take on Sarah Bareilles Love Song. Apart from a few off keys, I personally believe it’s an extreme upgrade.

Post pop-covering, Four Year Strong decided to make a whole cover album, before releasing their own songs, to ‘tide their crowds over’, and that’s where Explains It All has come from. Their more hardcore take on the songs covered on this album allow the audience to hear new versions of their old favourites through this extremely talented band who can take a pop song and make it darker and more fun-loving than ever. From Third Eye Blind’s Semi-Charmed Life to Absolutely (Story of a Girl) by Nine Days, Four Year Strong have covered their bases and show their brute, punk force.
