GUIDE SUMMER 2012 | Guide

Greetings from Lahti! The lively cultural life of the Lahti region and the versatile nature with its ridges and lakes make the region a unique tourist attraction all year round. Thanks to the Salpausselkä ridges, there are genuinely four seasons in the Lahti region, each of which provides its own specialties for tourists and leisure activities. There are excellent canoeing routes, won derful beaches, lakes full of fish, challenging hik ing routes, the ancient Pulkkilanharju National Park, and forests full of mushroom and berries. The region’s several wellbeing centres, such as Messilä, Tallukka, Kumpeli, Vierumäki and Paju lahti, offer versatile services for your entire family. This is why families often come to Finland to en joy their leisure. You can choose the vacation of your dreams – enjoy the quiet and beautiful na ture, see the theatre or go to concerts, try out the VellamoMenu, sightsee, have a sporting hol iday or shop. Or you can make a perfect combi nation of all of these! Lahti is involved in the World Design Capi tal Helsinki 2012 project with Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa. The future vision for the World Design Capital is bold: design will have a central role in the society, and it will be a source

The people of summer cottages Finns are people of summer cottages. At sum mer, people search for silence, tranquillity and togetherness from summer cottages instead of homes, and almost every Finn has a hideaway where to relax and regain strength for the winter. For some people the summer cottage means water that has to be carried inside from a well,

GUIDE SUMMER 2012 | Restaurants & Cafés

LOCAL DELICACIES The Lahti region is full of wonderful restaurants and local specialties. Päijät-Häme cuisine has always utilised the plentiful bounty of the lakes and forests: pike-perch, lavaret and vendace as well as mushrooms and game. BLUEBERRIES, CRANBERRIES, CHANTERELLES, PORCINO MUSHROOMS, CLOUDBERRIES... The nature in autumn is bursting with delicious berries and mushrooms, which are only waiting to be picked. Anyone is allowed to pick mush rooms and berries, and relish in the yields of the forest. VELLAMOMENU serves tastes of Päijät-Häme and seasonal delicacies from local ingredients in six restaurants in Lahti and the surrounding are

as. The main ingredients of the menu come di rectly – fresh and tasty – from local farms, fish ermen and producers. Each VellamoMenu restaurant plans its own special menu based on these ingredients. For more information, www. paijat-hame.fi/Vellamomenu/. LOCAL FOOD AND TOP-QUALITY DELICACIES – Heila in Heinola is based on the idea that lo cal food is much more than a couple of bags of flour or some wilted carrots. Thus, the 1,200 square metre local food market Heila located in Vuohkallio, Heinola, includes a serving fish and meat market, a local wine store, a bread section and near food restaurant Café Heila. Further more, Heila sells Finnish quality products from more than two hundred processing companies, primary producers and artisans. FRESH BREAD – When on holiday, it is nice to try out the local breads. You could try, for example, the excellent rye breads of Sinuhe, Villähteen leipä, Pullapojat or Oululainen. The Lahti bakery specialises in rye bread, and the well-known Ou lulainen rye bread, Jälkiuunileipä, was created in Lahti after the wars.

WASHING THE FOOD DOWN – Beverages made from the Salpausselkä groundwater by Hartwall are excellent with food. Genuine lo cal beverages are also available at Brewery & Distillery Teerenpeli: beers, ciders and whis keys as well as beers of Aleksi Brewery in down town Lahti or the award-winning farm wines of Pihamaa in Kalkkinen, Asikkala. Pihamaa’s farm store also includes other local delicacies rang ing from honey to organic flour and sparkling strawberry wine. YOU CAN TASTE BERRY WINES made from the farm’s own berries at Vineyard Pihamaa. The farm cultivates all sorts of plants, such as straw berry, raspberry and currants. The fields also provide pea, potato, corn, lettuce, cabbage and cucumber. You can buy all of these produce and other local delicacies at the vineyard. EXCELLENT FLOUR Vääksyn Mylly manufac tures 69 products. In addition to the mill’s own products, the mill shop sells genuine Finnish rye bread from the best manufacturers.

GUIDE SUMMER 2012 | GUIDE RECOMMENDS

GUIDE ! recommends

Fishing is fun! Fishing has always been a part of the Finnish way of life, particularly in the summertime. This is partly because 10% of the surface area of Finland is water and there are more than 180,000 lakes and more than 600 rivers. The clean waters are home to more than seventy fish species that have been fished and eaten for as long as there have been people in the region. More and more nonFinnish tourists also like to try their hand at fish ing during their holiday, particularly after hearing that angling and ice-fishing are included in the scope of the public right of access which means that anybody can angle or ice-fish.

40  www.lahtitravel.fi

Other types of fishing require two separate permits: anybody between the ages of 18 and 64 who wants to catch fish using any other meth od than angling or ice-fishing will have to pay the State Fisheries Management Charge (kalastuk senhoitomaksu) and obtain a province-specific fishing permit or a permit from the owner of the body of water in which the fishing takes place. This applies to fly-fishing, trolling and net fish ing as well as fishing with any other type of trap, such as a fish trap. The easiest way to buy a fish ing permit is visiting an R-kioski kiosk. For fishing services in the region, please see page 47.

GUIDE SUMMER 2012 | Water & Nature

SAILING ON THE WATERS Vesijärvi, Päijänne and Ruotsalainen teem with stunning islands and places worth visiting: the canals of Vääksy and Kalkkinen, Enonsaari Island, Myllysaari Island and Kelvenne are only a few of the must-see locations. And while on Lake Vesijärvi, you should keep your eyes open and try to spot the masterpieces of the Beach Gallery. 100-YEAR-OLD PAVILION The oldest burial sites of Lahti and Hollola date to the Iron Age and were discovered on Myllysaari Island. In the late 19th century, a windmill was built in the centre of the island and survived to the early 20th centu

42  www.lahtitravel.fi

ry. On the island there is a pavilion, which was de signed by architect Uno Alanko from Lahti. The pavilion, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, belongs in the list of protected sites of the city of Lahti. In summer, the building, which represents art noveau-styled wood architecture, is open as a summer restaurant. Myllysaari can also be accessed by car. ACROSS BY BOAT TO ENONSAARI ISLAND The picturesque Enonsaari in Enonselkä Basin in front of Lahti is an exciting destination for family trips. In addition to a restaurant and campfire site, there are six camping cabins for rent. The island also features a nice swimming beach, a marked nature path, a shelter and a beach volley field. The island can be reached by scheduled boat trips departing from Lahti or Messilä. LOVELY KELVENNE Kelvenne in the Padasjoki municipality is one of the largest and nicest high islands of Finland. An 8 km long hiking trail runs through the island of Kelvenne and is indicated with blue marks. There are also several campfire sites along the route. The shores of Kelvenne can also be reached by canoe. For canoers, the near

est point of departure is the shore of Päijänne Na tional Park. CASSELI RACE – SAILING EVENT 28–29 MAY A traditional regatta organised by the Lahden Purjehdusseura sailing club and Restaurant Cas seli will open the summer boating season. The im pressive regatta with around 60 boats will invade the waters of Vesijärvi Lake in late May. Between the competitions, the boats will come ashore in the Harbour. ART CONQUERED THE SHORES OF LAKE VESI JÄRVI The magnificent waterscapes of Lake Vesi järvi fascinated Jean Sibelius, Juhani Aho and the painter Väinö Hämäläinen, who all spent their summers at the shore of Lake Vesijärvi. Now art has once more taken over Lake Vesijärvi, but this time in a slightly different way. 12 independent pieces of environmental art are positioned on the southern Vesijärvi shores, forming the Vesijärvi Shore Gallery. The aim of the exhibition, which will be partially renewed each year, is to create a work of art in the sensitive coastal landscape. Each year, professionals and students of architecture, design and art will be invited to create the pieces of art.

Vääksy Canal is one of Europe’s most busily trafficked inland canals. The canal only includes one lock, and the difference between the two lakes’ water level is around three metres.

GUIDE INFO Finland is one of the best fishing countries in the world and the plan is to retain it as such. WWF Finland aims at making Finland the first state in the world where only sus tainably caught and produced fish is sold by the end of 2015. WWF's fish guide classifies fish based on their sustainability – i.e. how the fish is being caught and how large the population is – using the traffic light prin ciple. Some of the sustainable species on the list are perch, pike, pike perch, bream and the autumn delicacy, crayfish. All of these can be caught in Päijät-Häme. So let's grab a fishing rod and get out there!

GUIDE SUMMER 2012 | Water & Nature

PASSENGER HARBOUR The port of Lahti is called the living-room of the inhabitants of Lahti. It is the focal point of numerous summer and winter events. In summer, the shores of Vesijärvi Lake are taken over by the Vesijärvi Beach Gallery exhibition coordinated by the Pro Puu Association. In May, it will transform into a huge sailing event. In the harbour, you can eat, drink, have fun, sing, dance and be happy – enjoy the Finnish summer.

RESTAURANT CASSELI is high-class dining res taurant right next to the Sibelius Hall. The res taurant offers a great view of Lake Vesijärvi. The menu and matching wine list are renewed three times per year. CASSELI RACE – SAILING EVENT 28–29 MAY A traditional regatta organised by the Lahden Pur jehdusseura sailing club and Restaurant Casse li will open the summer boating season. The im pressive regatta with around 60 boats will invade the waters of Vesijärvi Lake in late May. Between the competitions, the boats will come ashore in the Harbour. The old storehouse buildings at the Passenger Harbour house several nice CAFÉS. You can try the home-baked tasty delicacies of Café Kariran ta in the old train station building. Café Kariranta´s famous cinnamon buns are quaranteed to be the largest in Lahti. The harbour cafés are open all year around. The surroundings of the Lahti Passenger Harbour is a Mecca for WOOD ARCHITECTURE enthusi asts; a place that you simply must visit. A com

plete wood architecture park is being constructed close to the Sibelius Hall. The latest site is Cul ture Café Piano Pavillion right at the shoreline. The harbour area also includes two other sites of themed park; a lighted bus stop designed by Jap anese Kengo Kuma and a wooden spiral designed by Australian Richard Leplastier. The flagship of modern Finnish wood construction, Congress and Concert Centre SIBELIUS HALL spar kles right next to Lake Vesijärvi. The heart of the house, the tall Forest Hall, combines the large mu sic hall building to the Carpentry Factory dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. The ren ovated lakeside hall houses a pleasant restaurant. You can study the architecture of Sibelius Hall on guided house tours available on order. The flagship of the wood architecture park, CA FÉ-RESTAURANT PIANO PAVILION was de signed by architect Gert Wingårdh and opened in 2008. The stunningly beautiful café manufactured from wood and glass is partially on top of the lake at the Lahti Passenger Harbour. Piano Pavilion’s doors are open daily during the summer, starting on May 1st.

PROPUU ASSOCIATION OF LAHTI was estab lished in 1997. It is a guild and meeting place for cabinet makers, designers and other wood sec tor professionals. ProPuu is located in Tikkula, a former matchstick factory at the Lahti Passenger Harbour. The wonderful building houses the as sociation’s gallery, store, offices, designers’ work spaces and a carpenter’s shop. THE LANU SCULPTURE PARK of artist and pro fessor Olavi Lanu is located within a walking dis tance from the Passenger Harbour in the Karinie mi Park. Twelve human figures manufactured from reinforced concrete have been placed in the won derful lakeside nature. The park and the statues are absolutely worth seeing. THE WATER ORGAN is a musical fountain built by energy company Lahti Energia in 1997 next to pond Pikku-Vesijärvi close to the Passenger Har bour. Water, lights and music are combined into a delightful symphony that is at its best during the dark evenings of the autumn and winter. Shows are also available on order.

Restaurant on the lakeshore Located next to the Sibelius Hall on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi, Casseli is a top-class dining restaurant full of feeling. The restaurant right next to Sibelius Hall has been built at the si te where the old Lahti Glass Factory used to operate. The magnificent building dates back to 1999 but it has the same design characteris tics as the Glass Factory of the 1920s. Casseli serves a delicious buffet lunch and an á la carte lunch on weekdays. You can also choose your dish from the á la carte menu. The restaurant terrace is at a sheltered loca tion where you can enjoy the delicious food,

the summer day and a clear view of Lake Ve sijärvi. The dishes are a combination of global cuisine and Finnish food culture. The wine list changes with the seasonal menus to comple ment the culinary delight. Casseli received the right to use the Chaine des Rotisseurs sign in autumn 2006. The restaurant is at its best in the evenings before or after a concert, for bu siness luncheons, for having lunch with your fri ends, or as a party and meeting restaurant for businesses.

PARKOUR IN A PARK Lahti has invested in parkour by constructing a parkour park to Launo. The park contains climbing frames and various obstacles that can be used for prac ticing. Parkour is a manoeuvring discipline, origi nating from the suburbs of Paris, which is be coming more and more popular amongst the youth. The purpose is to move by climbing, jumping and leaping through the environ ment by using walls, rails, and other support ing structures. You can find more information about the activity at www.dash.fi

GUIDE INFO The Laune Central Park of more than ten hec tares has been constructed close to the entrance to the city on the fields of Laune. The construc tion was started a little less than thirty years ago when the City Council decided in its 75th anni versary meeting to build an outdoor living room for children and youth of Lahti. The selected place is a bottom of a lake that dried out 11,000 years ago close to the downtown area.
