A R T A N D C U LT U R E There are dozens of interesting museums, summertime exhibitions and summer theatres in the Lahti region. 1. CINNAMON AND CARDAMOM – LIFE OF
A BAKER FAMILY IN LAHTI 1875–1917 In the museum’s photo exhibition, old photographs come to life to tell a true story about Oskar and Augusta Lefrén, who started their life together in 1875 as a baker and maid at Lahti Manor. The exhibition is based on the family photo album of the Lefréns. The photos tell a fascinating true story about the baker family, about Lahti before Finland became independent. Lahti Historical Museum, 23 March 2016 – 1 January 2017
AUTHOR´S CHOICE The summer exhibition at Pinxinmäki brings to Sysmä an unprecedented combination of art: it brings together writers and artists to tell an interesting story about
what becomes when an author is given power to choose an artist. The exhibition is open from 12 June to 14 August
AT THE EDGE The summer exhibition of Lehtioja Service Centre showcases a selection of poster art by Måns Hedström (1943–2005) from the basic exhibition of the Finnish Theatre Museum. The exhibition also includes metal sculptures by Kirsi Vahtera of Lahti. Vahtera’s influences come from the Finnish mythology, Kalevala and Lake Vesijärvi. 15 June –21 August Among other things THE ORIMATTILA ART MUSEUM, includes the collections of the Ilmari and Toini Wall-Hakala Art Foundation, as well as the

MANORS AND T H E I R S TO R I E S VIP GUESTS, DESERTERS AND CHILD WIVES Did you know that Urajärvi Manor is haunted? And did you know that there is a cave where deserters used to hide during the Continuation War? Or that field marshal Mannerheim visited Rapala Manor in Sysmä when it was under the management of general Rudolf Walden? There are several manors with exciting histories in Päijät-Häme that you can visit. What is also exciting is why there are so many manors in Sysmä. They say that the devil toured the world to gather people into his sleigh. The sleigh toppled over close to Sysmä Church, and nobles were hurtled all around the parish. www.visitlahti.fi/museot

SAHTI is ancient Finnish home-brewed beer that is still being made in Hartola. People still make sahti for Christmas, Midsummer and weddings. Many people make it in their own sauna, while others buy the wort and brew the beer in their basement. BENJAMIN´S FARM MARKET offers food produced in nearby farms at the heart of the city: fish, meat, bread, cheeses, vegetables, fresh pastries and all kinds of delicacies. www.lihatori.fi THE FARM SHOP AT OKEROINEN MILL sells several types of fresh flour in packages of different sizes as well as other farm produce. The flour is ground and packaged weekly, depending on the demand. The mill adds no additives to its flourmia. www.kinnarintila.fi FRESH BREAD When on holiday, it is nice to try out the local breads. You could try, for example, the excellent rye breads of Sinuhe, Villähteen leipä, Viipurilainen kotileipomo. Pullapojat, or Oululainen. Or fall in love with Sysmä´s famous ryebread.
