There are several LEAN-TOS in the Lahti regio that are open to anyone who abides by the Finnish everyman’s rights. All those who use a leanto must ensure that the surroundings stay clean.

CONGRESS AND CONCERT CENTRE SIBELIUS HALL is the largest public wooden building built in Finland in the past hundred years. The concert hall has unique acoustics. The hall seats 1250 people, and it is the venue for both classical and contemporary concerts. Information and house tour reservations, please call + 358 (0)3 814 2811.
SPORTS CENTRE includes ski jumps, a skiing stadium, Restaurant Voitto, a large event hall, a trade fair hall, sports center, an ice stadium, the Ski Museum, a central sports field and an area for biathlon. In the the summertime they are used as mountain biking and outdoor exercising routes. 5. IITTI PARISH VILLAGE was named
Finland’s Most Beautiful Village in 1990. The rustic atmosphere and buildings are still beautifully preserved. The village used to be the centre of the parish until the end of the last century when the construction of the railway between Helsinki and St. Petersburg slowly transferred the administrative focus to Kausala, which is south of the village.

CHURCH OF THE CROSS is designed by academician Alvar Aalto is the main church in the City of Lahti. Built in 1978, the simplified church’s exterior face opening to the marketplace is dominated by a large cross consisting of 52 windows, one for each week of the year. The Church Park includes Wäinö Aaltonen’s sculpture Vapauden hengetär (Spirit of Freedom). 6. WATER ORGAN A musical fountain in Pik-
ku-Vesijärvi pond. Music from movies, musicals and other well-known classics. The show consists of music and spectacular water jets. Shows daily at 1 pm and 6 pm from June to the end of August.

LOVELY KELVENNE Kelvenne in the Padasjoki municipality is one of the largest and nicest high islands of Finland. An 8 km long hiking trail runs through the island of Kelvenne and is indicated with blue marks. There are also several campfire sites along the route.

W H AT TO D O ? Music, culture and meetings. The Lahti region is full of interesting events in the summertime. A couple of them are presented here. 1. IITTI MUSIC FESTIVAL is a four-day event that mainly focuses on chamber music. The key venue is the idyllic Iitti parish village and its 300-year-old wooden church that is one of the most valuable churches in Finland. The festival will culminate with the carrying of a piano atop the Hiidenvuori hill where an ancient castle used to be located and the traditional midnight concert up on the hill. 14–18 June
The concert calendar of the SIBELIUS HALL offers a great cavalcade of domestic and international stars. The standard programme includes Thursday concerts of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, but pop, rock, light music concerts. PINXINMÄKI at Suopelto in Sysmä is a new kind of entertainment centre. You can come to
Pinxinmäki to spend time, read, play board games, surf the web, work, have something to eat, enjoy art or ride Icelandic horses. Open daily AT YLEXPOP you can listen to the hottest artists of the summer, free of charge. The concert does not cost anything and lasts for the entire afternoon. YleXPop on 4 June at Lahti Market Square LAHTI BLOCK PARTY on Rautatienkatu street on 20 August 2017 is a city culture party that is open to everybody free of charge. The band has opened its own museum in Hennala where the history of the group from the early days to the present is illustrated. Apulandia includes a café and the band’s own facilities. BERRY FARMS There are several berry farms in the region where you can go to buy seasonal berries or pick them yourself. In addition to the berries, the farms sell juices and jams. Café LA KAR DE MUMMA in Hartola offers pastries made onsite, such as large cinnamon buns that have been made with real butter and plenty of sugar. The café also offers gluten-free pastries by Vuohelan Herkku. Vineyard PIHAMAA makes wines from the farm’s own berries, while Pihamaa Brewery focuses on making beer and cider. The farm also cultivates strawberries, raspberries, currants, peas, potatoes, corn, lettuce, cabbage and cucumber. You can buy all of these and other local delicacies at the vineyard.

LANU SCULPTURE PARK of artist and professor Olavi Lanu is located within a walking distance from the Passenger Harbour in the Kariniemi Park.
