COVID-19 has made us realise that we have everything we need for a perfect holiday right here in the Lahti region, and also in a climate friendly way. Are you dreaming of a lakeside holiday? We have shores farther than the eye can see. Is fishing your passion? No problem. Are you interested in sustainable mobility and local flavours? Rent a bike and tour up and down the province of PäijätHäme, enjoy local food, taste some farm wines, drink a cup of freshly brewed local coffee and buy some berries grown at a local farm. When autumn is near, you can replace your sandals with rubber boots and go into the woods to collect berries and mushrooms, warm up a sauna at a summer cottage, and enjoy the quiet and the sunset sitting on a jetty. The Lahti region is also well-known for its excellent outdoor exercising opportunities. We have varied hiking, biking and canoeing routes, lakes full of fish and the Päijänne National Park with places to build a fire and beaches. Pack a tent into a canoe and start exploring the area on the water – only your imagination and the length of your holiday set the limits to what you can do and experience in the Lahti region. Once here, you’ll be in no hurry to get anywhere. ■

Bikes can be rented from multiple places.
Don’t have a car? No worries: rent a bike, an electric car or a boat. YOU CAN EASILY GET TO LAHTI by train or bus, and once here, you can get around in an environmentally friendly manner by renting a bike, electric scooter, canoe, rowboat or boat through the Skipperi boat rental service. If you’d rather not exert yourself, you can call a bike taxi. The bike taxi works just like a taxi: it can pick you up from a specific location, or you can catch it at a stop or on the fly. If the distance to where you want to go is too long to cycle, you can always rent a shared electric car. You can book the car online, using an app or by phone. You will open and close the car doors with your mobile phone, and the keys will already be in the car. Cars are easily available in downtown Lahti, and they are always picked up and returned at the market square car park.

Biking in the Lahti region The Lahti region has excellent terrain for cycling. Road and gravel cyclists should head to the route going round Lake Vesijärvi or take the route to Hollola Church and back. The marked Salpausselkä Trails are excellent for cycling all year round.
LAKE VESIJÄRVI LOOP is a classic route that active cyclists tend to ride several times each summer. You should start in the morning and take sufficiently many resting and refuelling breaks. The shortest version of the route is 80 km in length, and even a less experienced cyclist will be able to cover that distance during a single day. HOLLOLA PARISH VILLAGE ROUTE is one of the all-time favourites of cyclists in the Lahti region, as it is short enough to complete in the evening after a working day. You can ride the 37 km route in either direction, but no matter which direction you choose, you will have to climb the Salpausselkä ridge and come down the other side at some point. There are plenty of services along the route. PAJULAHTI AND IMMILÄ MILL A 60 km route from
Lahti via Villähde to Sports Centre Pajulahti and Immilä Mill in Nastola, which has a café in the summertime. Pajulahti serves you all year round. You will return along the same route from Immilä to Lahti. IDYLLIC COUNTRYSIDE SCENERY IN HOLLOLA
The 46 km circle route takes you from Lahti Sports Centre via Hälvälä in Hollola to gravel roads in the middle of fields in the rolling hills of Hollola. The route goes through Vaaviala and Lopenkylä, and round Lake Hahmajärvi, only to continue close to the railway via Nostava and Tikkakallio to Hennala and back to the starting point in Lahti.
FROM VÄÄKSY TO PULKKILANHARJU RIDGE AND KALKKINEN You can ride this 57 km route
along paved roads with a mountain or road bike. Pulkkilanharju ridge is one of Finland’s most beautiful scenic routes. The services of the Kalkkinen village are along the route, and in the summertime also at Reimari and Karisalmen kioski. The fittest cyclists would probably like to ride the circle route via Kopsuontie, which has lots of uphill and downhill sections. KITETIRRI in Lahti rents high-class electric Cube mountain bikes and electric KTM fatbikes. They are excellent for road cycling or forest routes. Guided tours are also available. FENIX OHJELMAPALVELUT rents fatbikes. The wide tyres of a fatbike ensure good grip on any surface; uneven terrain, rocks or tree stumps will not stop you. Guided fatbike tours are also available. TOP 5 CYCLIST RESTING PLACES in the summertime are a kiosk in the Hollola parish village, Ranskalainen kyläkauppa in Vääksy, a kiosk in Karisalmi, Mani-Baari in Kalkkinen and Immilä Mill in Nastola. TASTE ROUTES IN THE LAHTI REGION are also excellent for cycling trips. The routes offer a variety of excellent places to take a break. visitlahti.fi/makureitit

Lahti’s change started with Lake Vesijärvi. Photo: Lassi Häkkinen
Story of the European Green Capital started with water Lake Vesijärvi extends from downtown Lahti all the way to the Finnish lake district. When the lake is calm, you can see a mirror image of the Sibelius Hall on its surface. The lake was in a poor state decades ago, however. The journey of Lahti towards the status of the European Green Capital started with the restoration of Lake Vesijärvi in the 1970s. The cleaning of the lake, which had been badly polluted, cre-
ated the foundation for cleantech expertise and research in Lahti. Nowadays, Lake Vesijärvi is a clean lake that is full of fish. Fishing enthusiasts, residents of Lahti and tourists can all enjoy the lake that is located close to the downtown area. Go to Lake Vesijärvi to surf, SUP boarding, row a boat or swim, and you’ll know why Lahti is the European Green Capital. ■

Go fishing, swimming or SUP boarding There are countless of large and small lakes, ponds, rivers, swimming beaches and islands in the Lahti region. You can go to an island by boat to spend the night in a tent, for example. Put your swimsuit and a picnic lunch in a backpack, and go and enjoy an active yet lazy summer day by the water.
BY BOAT TO LIETSAARI ISLAND The eastern part of Lietsaari island in Padasjoki is part of the Päijänne National Park. There is a cape at the tip of the island where the sandy bottom is level and the water is shallow. The sand is nice and soft on both sides of the cape and the water slowly gets deeper: excellent for a swimming trip for the whole family! There is a dry closet, a large campfire site on the island. If you don’t have a boat, you can rent one or grab a boat taxi. Also see the Skipperi boat rental service. RENT A CANOE Anybody can go canoeing. A beginner can learn the basics on a guided canoeing trip. A more experienced canoeist can plan a longer route that utilises the lean-tos and campfire sites in the region. Moving at the water level opens up a whole new interesting viewpoint to the surrounding scenery. With a kayak or canoe, you can also get to places that you could not reach with a boat. Renting a canoe is possible in almost all of the municipalities in the Lahti region. GET YOUR SWIMSUIT AND HEAD TO THE BEACH! There are 12 swimming beaches in Lahti
and 14 in Hollola. You can swim for example at Rantapuisto in Ankkuri, Messilä, Mukkula, Herrasmanni, Likolampi, Mytäjäinen and Möysä.
You can find one of southern Finland’s best sandy beaches in Asikkala. The long and shallow sandy beach in Kalmari is excellent for the whole family. There are seven official swimming beaches in Padasjoki. The best swimming beach in Heinola is in the downtown area, on the shore of the beautiful Kymenvirta river. There is a playground in connection with the Urajärvi beach in Iitti. In Sysmä, you can swim at the Hiekko beach and the camping area, for example. While in Hartola, you should visit Aurinkoranta and Tainionvirta beaches. STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP) is the perfect way to enjoy the water while improving your physical condition and balance. Your whole family can enjoy SUP boarding. In addition to lakes, you can use a SUP board in rivers. SUP boarding is a fine way to enjoy the great outdoors. SUP boards are available for rent at almost every harbour. LAHTI OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOL is located at the Lahti Sports Centre, at the foot of the ski jump hills. It is the only 50-metre swimming pool in the city with a shallower children’s pool at one end. There are outdoor showers close to the pool. The dressing rooms and actual shower rooms, as well as saunas, are located in the ski jump spectator’s stand

From the Lahti Passenger Harbour, you can embark on short lunch cruises and evening cruises to the Vääksy Canal and back. There is also a regular ship route between Lahti and Heinola. Camping in nature conservation areas, national parks and the yard areas of private properties is not allowed. Don’t forget to take a camping mattress with you! ■
FISHING The lakes and rivers in Finland are clean and full of fish. You should try out fishing with a fishing rod, as you don't need a permit for it. Any other fishing method requires a permit, if you are between 18-64 years of age. There are places suitable for fishing in Lahti on the breakwaters close to the harbours, for example. The breakwaters in Niemi and Teivaa are excellent for fishing with a fishing rod or lure. There are plenty of fish species in the Joutjoki river delta because of warmer condensate water in the river. You can also fish from the shore close to the Niemi harbour. In Asikkala, there are fishing spots meant for children and young people along the Enskala nature trail. Hammonjoki river is one of the few rivers with naturally reproducing trout strain in the Lake Vesijärvi catchment area. Only fly-fishing is allowed in the Hammonjoki river.
If you HOP ABOARD a boat in Lahti, you can keep going all the way to Jyväskylä. Vääksy Canal connects Lake Vesijärvi to Lake Päijänne, via Kalkkinen Canal you can get to Heinola and the route to Lake Pyhäjärvi goes via Kimola Canal. There are village harbours and sandy beaches along the way, where you can stop for a swim or stay and enjoy the Finnish lakeside scenery and sun. Almost all of the harbours provide services of different levels to boaters from refuelling to restaurants. NIGHT UNDER THE STARRY SKY Camping is easy and nice. The Kimola Canal
Three canals and three villages The Vääksy, Kalkkinen and Kimola Canals are much more than just gates between two lakes. The villages surrounding the canals are full of things to see and do. THE OLD CENTRE OF VÄÄKSY with its small boutiques and wonderful atmosphere is withing a walking distance from the Vääksy Canal, which turns 150 this year. Those coming to the Kalkkinen Canal by car should also visit Vineyard Pihamaa. The Kimola Canal is a sight worth seeing in its own right: the canal is 5.5 kilometres in length, and it has a lock that is 12 metres tall and a unique canal tunnel. The village of Vuolenkoski and its services are close by. There is a kiosk at the canal. You can easily spend all day in Kalkkinen, Vääksy and Vuolenkoski before it’s time to hop into your boat or car and continue your journey. ■

PÄIJÄT-HÄMEEN LIITTO
Hartola offers outdoor exercising opportunities to fit a king: play golf, walk, or go orienteering, hiking or biking – any style goes. A granite church designed in the early 20th century by architect Josef Stenbäck in the Finnish art nouveau style is located in the middle of the village. The Koskipää Manor milieu with its windmill
and suspension bridge, a modern art exhibition in Taidesalonki Talvio and the Itä-Häme Museum is a unique place to visit. When walking on the king’s roads and paths, you might be inspired in the footsteps of Mika Waltari, who also dipped his toes in Tainionvirta river. ■
