Winter holidays in Lahti The Lahti region is a paradise for winter lovers. The ridges of Salpausselkä guarantee a real winter with snow and frozen lakes. Here you can go skiing, skating, snowshoeing and ski downhill as soon as the snow fall until well into the spring. And, if the outdoor becomes boring, you might want to stop by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra's Thursday concerts or enjoy the program of the Sibelius Hall or a theatre. Salpausselkä Ski Games The history of the Salpausselkä Ski Games is long and colourful. The father of the games was legendary Finnish athlete and a jack of all trades in sports, Lauri “Tahko” Pihkala. He wrote in Suomen Urheilulehti magazine on 13th March 1922 that Finland should have an annual global skiing event and that Lahti would be the best venue for such an event. People in Lahti did not hesitate: Lahden Hiih toseura skiing club was established three weeks later, on 3 April 1922, and the club’s primary
purpose was arranging an annual skiing event equalling Holmenkollen. The club succeeded in this, because Salpausselkä Ski Games grew into a great annual event that has made Lahti renown all around the world. In 2014 the games will take place 28.2.–2.3. Finlandia Ski Marathon The Finlandia Ski Marathon was held for the first time in Hämeenlinna, Lahti in 1974. The first marathon was attended by over a thousand skiers. One could see on the tracks

New year, new tricks In the New Year's Eve we celebrate the past year's end and the beginning of a new one. Some of us spend it in a fine restaurant, others spend the year's last hours in a concert or an opera. Perhaps the nicest way, however, is to celebrate the beginning of a new year with friends while enjoying good food and drinks. When the old year finally becomes the new, we'll open a bottle of sparkling wine, make our New Year's resolutions and watch fireworks. In the olden days we used to look for omens for the coming year on the New Year's Eve. One would throw a whisk on the sauna roof and if its stem pointed towards the graveyard, death was to visit the house. A whisk could be thrown to the roof also when a groom was to be chosen. The groom would arrive to the house from the direction indicated by the whisk's stem. The coming year's harvest was predicted by throwing the
straw brought inside the house to the perches. The more straw left hanging, the better the harvest for the coming year. Tin casting One other thing remaining from the old superstitious beliefs is tin casting. The tradition came to Finland from Sweden and Central Europe, and in the beginning it was an upper-class tradition. It spread among the people in the 1800s.

A few practical tips for the new year: if you get up early on the first day of the year, you will stay active throughout the year, and if you sleep late, you will be suffering from sleepiness throughout the year. Children will behave well throughout the year if they are not scolded on the New Year's Day. And if the first visitor of the new year is a man, it will be a good year; a woman, in turn, predicts misfortune.

The president's speech The president's New Year speech has been part of the Finnish New Year celebrations since 1934. Until the 1950s the speech was broadcast only by radio. The first televised New Year's speech was held by Urho Kekkonen in 1958. The president's speech addresses the past year's events and talks about the plans for the coming year.
CULTURE
Sparkling rockets A very important part of the New Year's reception is the shooting of firework rockets. The tradition comes from China and its original purpose was the expulsion of evil spirits. Rockets can be fired only during the night between the New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, from six in the evening to two in the morning.

Tin is traditionally horseshoe-shaped, as already its form is supposed to bring good luck. In addition to tin, a long-handled scoop and a bucket of water are needed for tin casting. Tin has to be smelted in the scoop on the stove. The molten metal has to be poured from the scoop to the bucket filled with water. As the tin sets, one can make a silent wish for the coming year. Upon cooling, metal solidifies in random blocks of various shapes. The secrets revealed by tin are to be read from its shadow on the wall. If, for example, tin has formed decorative lace-like parts, it is imagined to bring money. A ship, in turn, indicates journeys, a key an advance in career, and if tin has broken into pieces, a heartbreak. And for all singles: if you dip a handkerchief into the water used for tin casting and put it under the pillow, you can see your future spouse's features on it in the morning.

Finns are people of cottages. People search for silence, tranquillity and togetherness from cottages instead of homes, and almost every Finn has a hideaway where to relax and regain strength. For some people the cottage means water that has to be carried inside from a well, an outdoor toilet and candlelight. Others want to relax in a villa that is as comfortable as a family house. One can find just the right kind of cottage for vacation and relaxation from the versatile selection of rental cottages in the Lahti area. Check out the comprehensive selection and rent yourself a cottage.

Lahti Art Saturday
History & Art The Lahti region has dozens of interesting museums, where one can explore the history of skiing, television, art, local region, military medicine, aviation, or even fishing. Vyborg mon amour! The Vyborg mon amour exhibition of the Lahti Historical Museum invokes the spirit of Vyborg, where one can stop to admire the works of the Art Museum that survived the war, listen to the stories of people that evacuated, and see the photos and video materials that describe the town's history. The exhibition also presents the Russian Vyborg of today. 17.5.2013–16.3.2014 An art museum full of portraits In 2013 the Union of Finnish Art Associations' themed
exhibition covers a range of works from traditional portraits to applied arts. It involves 56 artists from all over Finland. The selection of works is wide and varied. While the more traditional approach gives one artist the possibility to bring attention to social aspects or to examine certain features of humanity, another one handles the subject with charged expression, cheerful abstraction or by analyzing the nature of the genre. 18.9.2013–19.1.2014 Ruins of the Church of St. Lawrence The

Church of St. Lawrence in Hämeenkoski was built in the late 15th or early 16th century. The church was used as a place of worship until the 17th century. Studies have shown that the church is almost unique among the 101 medieval stone churches in Finland: it was an octagonal church. The Church of St. Lawrence is a rare medieval site in Finland. Its history can only be surveyed by means of further archeological studies.

Things to do in winter Thanks to the Salpausselkä ridges there is a real winter in the Lahti region. Here you can skate, ski, snowshoe or sit by the fire and enjoy the snow and the quiet of the forest.
Ice swimming will keep you alert all day long. There are three places in Lahti where you can dip into an icy lake: at Mukkula, Mytäjäinen and Joutjärvi. There are fixed and heated dressing rooms in Joutjärvi and Mytäjäinen, and a movable “dressing room barrack” is brought to Mukkula when the swimming season starts. You can get a key to the Mukkula, Mytäjäinen and Joutjärvi dressing rooms from ice swimmers’ association Lahden Avantouimarit ry. Skiing fun Forward, even if it snows like there is no tomorrow! This old Finnish saying is especially well suited for the Lahti region. There are
almost 170 kilometres of lighted and unlighted skiing tracks in Lahti alone, of which around 145 kilometres are part of the Salpausselkä ridge track network. You can start skiing on the tracks used in the Finlandia Skiing Event and the Salpausselkä Ski Games right from the yard of Messilä Manor. There are a total of 70 kilometres of uninterrupted tracks, of which around 20 kilometres are lighted. You can take a leisurely skiing trip to Pirunpesä (the Devil’s Nest), for example. There is a place to build a fire close to the natural formation. Roasting sausages at a lean-to There are several lean-tos in the Lahti region. You can ski or

Under the spell of ice fishing Vesijärvi and Päijänne are filled with fish. Here it's definitely worthwhile to try fishing even in winter. Burbot is a delicacy especially in late winter. If you get really lucky, the burbot will be full of fish roe. Then you'd just have to cook some blinis and the feast may begin. Ice fishing does not require a fishing licence.
DID YOU KNOW? Finland is one of the best fishing countries in the world and the plan is to retain it as such. WWF Finland aims at making Finland the first state in the world where only sustainably caught and produced fish is sold by the end of 2015. WWF's fish guide classifies fish based on their sustainability – i.e. how the fish is being caught and how large the population is – using the traffic light principle. Some of the sustainable species on the list are perch, pike, pike perch, bream and the autumn delicacy, crayfish. All of these can be caught in Päijät-Häme. So let's grab a fishing rod and get out there!
WATER & NATURE
Snowmobiling, snowshoeing...The versatile terrain of Messilä offers the opportunity to practice many other sports apart from slalom – ranging from ice fishing to trek skating. Camping Messilä on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi is the meeting point for snowmobilers in the wintertime. A snowmobile route of a little over 200 kilometres, maintained by snowmobiling association Päijät-Hämeen Moottorikelkkailijat ry, starts at the Messilä shore. In addition to the snowmobiling route, the area includes wonderful skiing routes. There are around sixty kilometres of regularly maintained skiing tracks. If you do not consider that sufficient, you can always ski on the ice of the lake when the late winter sun shines. A suitable trip for a Sunday afternoon starts at the Messilä Camping shore from where you can ski to Enonsaari Island, enjoy the wintry nature and roast some sausages at a lean-to. If you do not like skiing, you can also enjoy the scenery on snowshoes. Just put an auger into your backpack, and you can catch your lunch from the lake yourself!
