KAMMIOVUORI HILL in Sysmä is an excellent excursion site. There is a marked path of 3.8 ki lometres on the hill. The terrain is somewhat rocky. You should reserve at least two to three hours to walk the entire path. Don’t forget stur dy footwear! From Kammiovuori, you can con tinue your hike to Purnuvuori Hill in Hartola. There is a lean-to around midway between Kam miovuori and Purnuvuori. You can make a fire there. LOVELY KELVENNE Kelvenne in the Padasjo ki municipality is one of the largest and nicest high islands of Finland. MOONLIGHT SKI OR POSTIHIIHTO SKI? Du ring winter the traditional 7,5 km long Päijänne Moonlight Ski will be held under the light of lan terns on the ice of Päijänne. March is the time for Päijänne Postihiihto, which includes a number of route options. The ski tracks pass through the Päi jänne national park’s landscape from island to is land. Moonlight Ski 10.2. and Postihiihto Ski 12.3. SKIING IS FUN! There are almost 170 kilomet res of lighted and unlighted skiing tracks in Lah ti alone, of which around 145 kilometres are part of the Salpausselkä ridge track network. You can start skiing on the tracks used in the Finlandia Skiing Event and the Salpausselkä Ski Games right from the yard of Messilä Manor. There are a total of 70 kilometres of uninterrupted tracks, of which around 20 kilometres are lighted.

1. THE FI N LANDIA SKI I NG

ENJOY SKIING Messilä has been chosen as the ski centre of the year, and for good reason. Mes silä with its ten slopes and several snow events is the largest and most popular skiing centre in southern Finland where you can try out slalom, telemark skiing, snowboarding and traditional cross-country skiing. www.messila.fi UNDER THE SPELL OF ICE FISHING Vesijärvi and Päijänne are filled with fish. Here it’s defini tely worthwhile to try fishing even in winter. Bur bot is a delicacy especially in late winter. If you get really lucky, the burbot will be full of fish roe. Then you’d just have to cook some blinis and the feast may begin. Ice fishing does not require a fishing licence. 3. CHRISTMAS VILLAGE brings Christmas spirit to downtown Lahti. In the Christmas vil lage, you can experience all kinds of scents, co lours and tastes of Christmas. Around two dozen cottages will be erected on Lahti Market Squa re for the Christmas village. S M A LL B R EW ER I ES U N ITE Here you can best quench your thirst with lemonades, beers, ciders and home-brewed beers made by the local small breweries. FARMBREWERY HOLLOLAN HIRVI makes its famous Kivisahti home-brewed beer plus an ad ditional thirteen different beers. Its most popu lar beers include a Scottish-style ale that tastes strongly of hops and juniper, and a pilsner called PeuraPils that has been made from organic bar ley malt. 1. VINEYARD PIHAMAA makes wines from

the farm’s own berries, while Pihamaa Brewe ry focuses on making beer and cider. All the grains used in the manufacturing processes are from Finland, some of them from the farm’s own fields. 2. The latest addition to the local brewery gen re is KANAVAN PANIMO. Sulku Pils, Unto Por ter and Toivo Red Ale are the first beers made by Kanavan Panimo. They have been made using lo cal ingredients: the malts come from Viking Malt in Lahti and rolled oats by Vääksy Mill are used to flavour the pilsner.

1. VI NEYARD PI HAMAA

BREWERY PANIMO PAJA was created based on the need to create handmade beer. The brewe ry makes traditional lagers from light to dark and top fermentation yeast beers from ales to stouts plus seasonal products based on the seasons or specific events. BREWERY PANIMOINEN & LEMMES has creat ed a dry apple cider in cooperation with the Le paa Vineyard of the Häme University of Applied Sciences. The cider, called Hämeen Hitain, tas tes so good because it has been made solely from Finnish apples. The brewery aims at ma king its products from local ingredients whene ver possible. TEERENPELI BREWERY & DISTILLERY has been making unique bottom and top fermenta tion yeast beers and ciders seasoned with actual berries for more than twenty years. The brewe ry makes beers and ciders suitable for all seasons and seasonal beverages.

Or have you already tasted a cider seasoned with rose petals or lingonberry lemonade? The Lahti region is full of genuine tastes and wonderful innovations that deserve a second look.

S C U LPTU R E PA R K 12 SCULPTURES IN THE MIDDLE OF NATURE The sculpture park of artist and professor Olavi Lanu is located within a walking distance from the Passenger Harbour in the Kariniemi Park.
