Greetings from Lahti! The lively cultural life and diverse ridge and lake scenery of the Lahti region makes it a unique travel destination no matter what the time of the year. Thanks to the ridges of Salpausselkä, Lahti region has four seasons, each of which brings its own special events and activities for tourism and leisure; perfect canoeing routes, lakes rich in fish, challenging hiking trails, Pulkkilanharju ancient nature park and forests full of mushrooms and berries can be found here. GUIDE WINTER 2012–2013 | Sightseeing & Events

WINTER EVENTS IN LAHTI REGION During winter the Lahti region is filled with interesting events such as the Stars of the stadium snowboard competition or the legendary Salpausselän kisat and Padasjoen Postihiihto. Everyone can surely find something interesting to do from this broad offer. CONTINENTAL CUP IN SKI JUMPING The international ski jumping competition season starts some time before the Salpausselkä competitions, when at the Lahti Grand Ski Jump (HS130) the second round of the FIS Continental Cup in Ski Jumping is held. The Continental Cup is the world’s second-toughest ski jumping tour from where new stars rise to compete in the World Cup. The Continental Cup in Ski Jumping will be held in Lahti from 15-16 December 2012.

10  www.lahtitravel.fi

SALPAUSSELKÄ SKI GAMES The history of the Salpausselkä Ski Games is long and colourful. The father of the games was legendary Finnish athlete and a jack of all trades in sports, Lauri “Tahko” Pihkala. He wrote in Suomen Urheilulehti magazine on 13 March 1922 that Finland should have an annual global skiing event and that Lahti would be the best venue for such an event. People in Lahti did not hesitate: Lahden Hiih toseura skiing club was established three weeks later, on 3 April 1922, and the club’s primary purpose was arranging an annual skiing event equalling Holmenkollen. The club succeeded in this, because Salpausselkä Ski Games grew into a great annual event that has made Lahti renown all around the world. In 2013 the games will take place, as usual, from 8 to 10 March 2013. All in all eight world cup tournaments will be held in Lahti. The ski jumping program includes Saturday evenings’ team ski jump and the individual competition on a large hill. In cross-country skiing the disciplines are men’s and women’s traditional cross-country as well as free style sprints.

were seen on the trails. The 40th Finlandia Ski will be held from 23-24 February 2013. The distance is 50 kilometres. EVENTS AT MESSILÄ There are all kinds of activities taking place at Messilä Holiday Centre during the winter. The season is filled with various ski-slope events from SuomiSlalom rounds to larger snow tours. Young skiers and snowboarders gather on seasonal Fridays for the Friday Night Fever slope event. The legendary White Blues will be held in Tallinn Bistro in January. FINLANDIA SKI Finlandia Ski was held for the first time in 1974 from Hämeenlinna to Lahti. More than 1,000 skiers took part in the first skiing event. Olympic winners and other celebrities of that time

CHILDREN'S WINTER OLYMPICS Children’s Winter Olympics will be held for the 18th time at the Lahti Sporting Centre. At the family event, children are invited to try out different skiing styles and to enjoy other fun things on the snow. The Children’s Winter Olympics are part of the international FIS World Snow Day, which is celebrated worldwide on the same day. The Children’s Winter Olympics and FIS World Snow Day will be held on 20 January 2013. WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2017 Lahti will host the seventh World Ski Championships held during the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence in 2017. LOCAL DELICASIES The Lahti region is full of wonderful restaurants and local specialties. Päijät-Häme cuisine has always utilised the plentiful bounty of the lakes and forests: pike-perch, lavaret and vendace as well as mushrooms and game.

BLUEBERRIES, CRANBERRIES, PORCINO MUSHROOMS... The nature in autumn is bursting with delicious berries and mushrooms, which are only waiting to be picked. Anyone is allowed to pick mushrooms and berries, and relish in the yields of the forest. You might want to try. VELLAMOMENU serves tastes of Päijät-Häme

Province of wellbeing and events The strengths of the Lahti region include its location, the nature and long traditions in arranging events. Lately, wellbeing tourism has become an important sector in addition to regular tourism – there are more elderly people in Finland and they have time to invest in themselves. The term wellbeing tourism includes a variety of busi-

nesses from Tallukka Wellbeing Centre to Pajulahti Sports Centre, Vierumäki Sports Academy, Messilä Manor, Hotel Kumpeli and a number of small day spa and yoga businesses, not to forget culture and the opportunities offered by the wonderful nature of the region.

GUIDE WINTER 2012–2013 | Water & Nature

WINTER SPORTS Thanks to the Salpausselkä ridges, the Lahti region enjoys good winters. You can ski, skate, snowshoe or just sit by a fire to enjoy the quiet, snowy woods.

skiing tracks in Lahti alone, of which around 145 kilometres are part of the Salpausselkä ridge track network. You can start skiing on the tracks used in the Finlandia Skiing Event and the Salpausselkä Ski Games right from the yard of Messilä Manor. There are a total of 70 kilometres of uninterrupted tracks, of which around 20 kilometres are lighted. You can take a leisurely skiing trip to Pirunpesä (the Devil’s Nest), for example. There is a place to build a fire close to the natural formation.

ICE SWIMMING WILL KEEP YOU ALERT ALL DAY LONG There are three places in Lahti where you can dip into an icy lake: at Mukkula, Mytäjäinen and Joutjärvi. There are fixed and heated dressing rooms in Joutjärvi and Mytäjäinen, and a movable “dressing room barrack” is brought to Mukkula when the swimming season starts. You can get a key to the Mukkula, Mytäjäinen and Joutjärvi dressing rooms from ice swimmers’ association Lahden Avantouimarit ry.

ROASTING SAUSAGES AT A LEAN-TO There are several lean-tos in the Lahti region. You can ski or walk there to have a packed lunch or make soot pot coffee, if you like. The lean-tos are open to anyone who abides by the Finnish everyman’s rights. All those who use a lean-to must ensure that the surroundings stay clean.

SKIING FUN Forward, even if it snows like there is no tomorrow! This old Finnish saying is especially well suited for the Lahti region. There are almost 170 kilometres of lighted and unlighted

40  www.lahtitravel.fi

FASCINATING SLALOM Slalom, Telemark skiing, snowboarding and traditional cross-country skiing – Messilä with its ten slopes and several snow events is the largest and most popular skiing centre in southern Finland. You can also drop by one of Messilä’s restaurants to have a cup of hot chocolate or a tasty lunch.

SNOWMOBILING, SNOWSHOEING...The versatile terrain of Messilä offers the opportunity to practice many other sports apart from slalom – ranging from ice fishing to trek skating. Camping Messilä on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi is the meeting point for snowmobilers in the wintertime. A snowmobile route of a little over 200 kilometres, maintained by snowmobiling association Päijät-Hämeen Moottorikelkkailijat ry, starts at the Messilä shore. In addition to the snowmobiling route, the area includes wonderful skiing routes. There are around sixty kilometres of regularly maintained skiing tracks. If you do not consider that sufficient, you can always ski on the ice of the lake when the late winter sun shines. A suitable trip for a Sunday afternoon starts at the Messilä Camping shore from where you can ski to Enonsaari Island, enjoy the wintry nature and roast some sausages at a lean-to. If you do not like skiing, you can also enjoy the scenery on snowshoes. Just put an auger into your backpack, and you can catch your lunch from the lake yourself! ICE FISHING Lake Vesijärvi and Lake Päijänne are

filled of fish. Here one should definitely try fishing even in winter. Burbot is a delicacy especially in late winter. And if you get really lucky, the burbot will be full of fish roe. Then you should just cook some blinis and start the feast. Take good supplies with you as food enjoyed in nature tastes the best. For ice fishing there is no need for a fishing licence.

GUIDE INFO Finland is one of the best fishing countries in the world and the plan is to retain it as such. WWF Finland aims at making Finland the first state in the world where only sustainably caught and produced fish is sold by the end of 2015. WWF's fish guide classifies fish based on their sustainability – i.e. how the fish is being caught and how large the population is – using the traffic light principle. Some of the sustainable species on the list are perch, pike, pike perch, bream and the autumn delicacy, crayfish. All of these can be caught in Päijät-Häme. So let's grab a fishing rod and get out there! www.lahtiguide.fi 41

GUIDE WINTER 2012–2013 | Water & Nature

PASSENGER HARBOUR Lahti Passenger Harbour has been called the public living room of Lahti. It is the stage of many events in the summer and winter. In the wintertime, Lake Vesijärvi becomes the townspeople’s own outdoor sports centre: people ice fish, skate, trip skate and ski on the ice. You can also see ice surfers when it is windy.

When visiting the harbour, you should also eat at one of the restaurants. In addition to Restaurant Casseli there are several restaurant ships. If you are interested in culture, a concert at the Sibelius Hall is a must. You can study local handicrafts at Handicraft Store Ulpukka or the ProPuu Gallery which includes monthly changing exhibitions. RESTAURANT CASSELI – Casseli is a high-class di ning restaurant right next to the Sibelius Hall. The restaurant offers a great view of Lake Vesijärvi. The menu and matching wine list are renewed three times per year. SCENT OF COFFEE ALL YEAR ROUND – The old storehouse buildings at the Passenger Harbour house several nice cafés. You can try the homebaked tasty delicacies of Café Kariranta in the old train station building. Café Kariranta’s famous cinnamon buns are guaranteed to be the largest in Lahti. The harbour cafés are open all year round. WOOD ARCHITECTURE at Vesijärvi Passenger Harbour – The surroundings of the Lahti Passenger Harbour is a Mecca for wood architecture enthusiasts. A complete wood architecture park is being con-

structed close to the Sibelius Hall. The latest site is Culture Café Piano Pavillion right at the shoreline. The harbour area also includes two other sites of the themed park: a lighted bus stop designed by Japanese Kengo Kuma and a wooden spiral designed by Australian Richard Leplastier. A panoramic resting platform has been designed to the Kariniemi hill by the Swiss Peter Zumthor. The object is supposed to be completed during 2011. SIBELIUS HALL – The window’s of Lahti’s pride, the flagship of modern Finnish wood construction, Congress and Concert Centre Sibelius Hall sparkle right next to Lake Vesijärvi. The heart of the house, the tall Forest Hall, combines the large music hall building to the Carpentry Factory dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. The renovated lakeside hall houses a pleasant restaurant. You can study the architecture of Sibelius Hall on guided house tours available on order. PIANO PAVILION – The flagship of the wood architecture park, Café-Restaurant Piano Pavilion was designed by architect Gert Wingårdh. The stunningly beautiful café manufactured from wood and glass is partially on top of the lake at the Lahti Passenger

Harbour. Piano Pavilion’s doors are open daily during the summer, starting on May 1st. WOOD DESIGN AT PROPUU – ProPuu Association of Lahti was established in 1997. It is a guild and meeting place for cabinet makers, designers and other wood sector professionals. ProPuu is located in Tikkula, a former matchstick factory at the Lahti Passenger Harbour. The wonderful building houses the association’s gallery, store, offices, designers’ workspaces and a carpenter’s shop. LANU SCULPTURE PARK – The sculpture park of artist and professor Olavi Lanu is located within a walking distance from the Passenger Harbour in the Kariniemi Park. Twelve human figures manufactured from reinforced concrete have been placed in the wonderful lakeside nature. THE WATER ORGAN is a musical fountain built by energy company Lahti Energia in 1997 next to pond Pikku-Vesijärvi close to the Passenger Harbour. Water, lights and music are combined into a delightful symphony that is at its best during the dark evenings of the autumn and winter. Shows are also available on order. www.lahtiguide.fi 43

Restaurant on the lakeshore Casseli, nestling close to the Sibelius Hall on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi, is a high-quality dining and social restaurant with its own distinctive atmosphere. It stands on the site of the old Lahti Glass Factory. The impressive restaurant building was constructed in 1999, but its architectural style is the same as in the Glass Factory of the 1920s. The restaurant gives splendid views straight onto Lake Vesijärvi. Its large windows integrate the winter landscape into the dining experience.

On weekdays, Casseli serves á la carte lunch and a delicious buffet lunch. In its range of dishes, international cuisine meets up with traditional Finnish culinary art. The wine list changes with the seasonal menus to complement the culinary delight. The restaurant was awarded the recognition plates of the Chaine des Rotisseurs in autumn 2006. Casseli is at its best in the evening before a concert; for a business lunch; for lunch with a friend; or as a celebration and meeting restaurant for a company.

EVENTS FOR CHILDREN PUT YOUR SKATES ON AND GET ON THE ICE! There are 25 outdoor ice rinks in Lahti. The most important and versatile sports centres are Kisapuisto Park, Radiomäki Hill, Kivimaa, Mukkula, Kerinkallio and Sepänniemi. SKATING, SKIING, SNOWBOARDING Messilä is located in Hollola, on the Salpausselkä ridge on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi, approximately eight kilometres from Lahti. In the wintertime, slalom skiers, snowboarders and Telemark skiers storm to the biggest slopes in southern Finland. There is also a separate slope for children. Messilä includes a skiing school and a ski rental and servicing point. There are a street and a half-pipe for snowboarders. SKIING FUN! The Ski Museum located in the Sports Centre at the foot of the three magnificent ski jumps offers wintry activities indoors. In addition to versatile exhibitions, the museum includes a popular section, the activity section where children can try their wings in a safe way in a ski jumping simulator, for example. You can also test your skills in other winter sports: there is an indoor skiing track and a biathlon shooting range.

50  www.lahtitravel.fi

HORSE RIDING The Lahti area also has beautiful landscapes for horse riding. The Stable of Messilä Manor, among others, organises horse riding courses for riders of all levels and ages year-round. In addition to traditional riding, in the Lahti area you can also enjoy riding treks on Icelandic horses. The treks are suitable both for horse riders and for those who are interested in hiking in the wild. Icelandic horses with their small size and strength are excellent for crosscountry riding. MAKE YOUR OWN TV SHOW The collection of the Radio and TV Museum includes more than 10,000 objects, almost 5,000 photographs, approximately 6,000 books and magazines as well as audiovisual materials and archives that include things that interest children and adults. You can try making a TV show. CLIMBING FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY! In Lahti at YogaRocks, you can try out how high you can climb a wall. There are several climbing walls for beginners and more skilled climbers at YogaRocks. Bouldering is a challenging and fun way of climbing that is becoming more and more

popular. Bouldering is climbing on walls less than five metres tall. The climbers do not use any safety harnesses; instead, safety is ensured by placing thick padding underneath the wall. Wall climbing is a sport suitable for children and adults alike. If you have not climbed before, an instructor will show you the ropes. CHILDREN'S WINTER CARNIVAL will be celebrated for the 30th time. The carnival programme brings together a wide and varied overview on the Päijät Häme children’s cultural know-how. The programme covers a number of different artistic fields. There will be music, theatre, dance, workshops, films and many more exciting activities and events for the whole family. GUIDE WINTER 2012–2013 | Family Attractions

LAUNE CENTRAL PARK A versatile park area has been constructed on a field in the Laune district of Lahti. You can do different kinds of sports, enjoy the beautiful nature or have a picnic lunch at a barbecue hut. Children will enjoy the Laune Family Park, which includes a water park, a game area and a traffic town. In addition to the Family Park, the central park area includes a bowling alley, a roller skating track, a Frisbee golf area, a dog park, a training ice rink, a circus field, a miniature golf field and a skating park of 1,500 square metres. Laune Central Park won the tenth place in a competition where people voted for the Top 10 beautiful locations in Päijät-Häme in 2008.

52  www.lahtitravel.fi

THE FAMILY PARK at Kaarikatu 26 is a place for the entire family, with experiences both outdoors and indoors. The park includes slides, climbing equipment, a traffic town, cottages for hobbies and a fortress. In the wintertime, there are frozen slides and an ice-skating rink in the Family Park. There is easy access to skiing tracks from the park. 100,000 people visit the Family Park every year. Entrance free of charge. SKATING AND ROLLERBLADING The Laune Skating Park was designed by professional skater Tom Stankevitz, who has also had international fame. The versatile staircases, ramps and slides of the park have been praised by local skaters. There is a 230-metre roller skating track going around the Skating Park. The track meets all international requirements. LAHTI BOWLING ALLEY Lahti Bowling Alley at the edge of the Laune Central Park offers a new arena for all types of bowling, from children’s birthday parties to glow bowling evenings and company bowling excursions to international bowling tournaments. There are twenty fully renovated alleys.

PARKOUR IN A PARK Lahti has invested in parkour by constructing a parkour park to Launo. The park contains climbing frames and various obstacles that can be used for practicing. Parkour is a manoeuvring discipline, originating from the suburbs of Paris, which is becoming more and more popular amongst the youth. The purpose is to move by climbing, jumping and leaping through the environment by using walls, rails, and other supporting structures. You can find more information about the activity at www. dash.fi THE CITY’S BEST SLIDE The longest and wildest slide of Lahti is right next to the event field. The City of Lahti builds a five metres long bidirectional slide for the children each winter. Depending on how much snow there is, the slide is open from December until March.

GUIDE INFO The Laune Central Park of more than ten hectares has been constructed close to the entrance to the city on the fields of Laune. The construction was started a little less than thirty years ago when the City Council decided in its 75th anniversary meeting to build an outdoor living room for children and youth of Lahti. The selected place is a bottom of a lake that dried out 11,000 years ago close to the downtown area.
