Recently Magic Millions graduates from Vinery Stud drafts include Gr.3 winner Eckstein (Gr.1 placed), Gr.3 winner Very Tempting, and stakes winner Cellargirl (Gr.1 placed). Up and coming Gr.1 placed three year-old Outrageous is a graduate of Vinery’s 2017 Gold Coast draft, as is Gr.2 placed Into the Abyss. Dual Gr.1 winner Russian Revolution and Gr.2 winner Rubick, who are both at stud now, are also graduates of Vinery’s Magic Millions sale drafts.

Vinery Stud will present twenty three yearlings at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast sale, including five by their Champion Sire More Than Ready, four by All Too Hard, as well as strong representation from their popular first season sires Headwater, and Press Statement.

THEY’RE MAJOR STALLION OWNERS AND VINERY STUD IS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S KEY HORSE BREEDING PROPERTIES THAT CONTINUES TO PRODUCE EXCELLENT RACEHORSES FROM IT’S RICH, UNDULATING PADDOCKS.

Bluebloods spoke to Adam White about their 2019 draft.

What can buyers expect from your 2019 MMGC draft?

A draft that offers a good mixture of sires. We have a nice bunch of horses by successful sires such as Tapit, More Than Ready, Snitzel, I Am Invincible, Not A Single Doubt, Written Tycoon, Exceed And Excel and Sebring. There is certainly plenty of sire strength to our draft. The Written Tycoon colt is a half-brother to Vinery graduate and 2018 Gr.1 VRC Kennedy Oaks winner Aristia, out of Gr.2 winner Nakaaya.

The five yearlings in this draft by More Than Ready include a colt who is the first foal of Gr.3 winner Runway Star, a close relation to group winner Kiss And Make Up who is also by More Than Ready. Another colt is out of Gr.1 winner Allez Wonder, while a Tapit filly who is the first foal of American Gr.3 winner Best Behavior has plenty of residual value. A half-brother by Not A Single Doubt to stakes winner Sandbar, from Gr.3 winner Tallow is definitely a colt to inspect. A Sebring half-brother to American Gr.3 winner Blueeyesintherein has a stellar pedigree, as does the other Sebring colt who is out of stakes winner Dirty, dam of Gr.2 placed winner Cabeza de Vaca.

All Too Hard continues to turn out the good winners and we will present a select group by him, including a colt from Gr.1 winner Snitzerland (eight wins including the Gr.1 Lightning Stakes), and a filly from Gr.1 winner Devil Moon. A half-brother to Gr.1 winner Howard Be Thy Name is out of stakes winner Bellini Rose from the Darci Brahma family, while the other All Too Hard yearling is a full sister to Gr.1 placed Outrageous and a half sibling to Western Australian Oaks winner Very Tempting.

In addition to that we have yearlings by our popular first season stallions Headwater and Press Statement. One of the highlights of the three Press Statement yearlings has to be the half-sister to recent Spring Carnival group winner Winter Bride, out of Amberino, a tough Gr.2 winner of ten races.

Which particular yearling in recent years gave you the most pleasant surprise with the sale price and what did you put it down to afterwards?

The I Am Invincible – Commanding Jewel colt we sold last year for $1.4million, now named Stark. He was a lovely horse and certainly had the pedigree to back it up, so he was always going to make a nice price. But from where the horse was at the start of his preparation I would never have predicted he would make that much. He was very typical of the family with a terrific attitude and this assisted him, as he had a fantastic preparation and he sold accordingly on the day.

What has been your biggest near miss in the Magic Million race series?

I sold Eckstein (I Am Invincible – Comrie, by Choisir) as a yearling through our Vinery 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast draft. She was beaten a nose by Invincibella in the $1million Magic Millions Plate last year. She also ran third in the Magic Millions Guineas as a three year-old. I would have loved to have seen her win one of those.

But she has still been a wonderful mare for connections and is a three time stakes winner, was Gr.1 placed when second to Shoals in the Myer Classic, and has amassed $1million in prize money.
