Creating a good impression racing away to a soft 2 1/4 length debut victory at Randwick in late October, the Time For War half-brother to dual Group One winner She Will Reign is being set for the same juvenile feature she won in 2017, the Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1, 1200m. He won again second time out at Rosehill and is a real star in the making. He was offered by Yarraman Park at the 2018 MMGC yearling sale and is proving another astute purchase for Darley Racing who purchased him in association with De Burgh Equine and Portelli Racing.

WE MAY NOT YET HAVE SEEN THE GAI WATERHOUSE/ADRIAN BOTT TRAINED FARETTI, YARRAMAN PARK’S 2018 MAGIC MILLIONS $2 MILLION SELLING SON OF I AM INVINCIBLE AND THE MORPHETTVILLE GUINEAS-LISTED, 1600M WINNER TAI TAI TESS BUT ALREADY THAT DRAFT HAS PRODUCED A VERY GOOD TWO YEAR-OLD IN THE SHAPE OF TIME TO REIGN.

Meanwhile there is plenty of promise in the 2019 draft and we chatted with the stud’s Harry Mitchell in the lead-up...

What can buyers expect from your draft?We have a big draft of 34 yearlings this year. We had a very good sale last year, lucky enough to top the averages and I think that this year’s group of horses is equally as good. The draft has 16 I Am Invincibles whose types match their pedigrees. Some highlight lots should be the Tai Tai Tess colt whose brother topped the sale last year. There is a lovely colt out of Oakleigh Girl (dual stakes winning daughter of the Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1, 1100m winner Miss Kournikova) and a half-brother to the recent stakes winner From Within whilst the fillies are headed by the daughter of Listed winner Rose Of Choice who is outstanding.

Hinchinbrook is well represented and they are out of mares of the quality of Tetsuko (Group Two placed daughter of Listed winner Magdalena), Meliora (Angus Armanasco Stakes-Gr.2. 1400m) and Harlem Heat (dam of the Listed winner Harlem River).

The draft is bolstered by yearlings by stallions of the calibre of Frankel, Not A Single Doubt (a daughter of the stakes placed Sweet Kiss) and Written Tycoon (a filly out of the Group Three mare Octavia) as well as youngsters by the exciting young horses Deep Field (a filly out of the Group Two placed Lazumba), Rubick (half-sister to the recent multiple city winner Scallopini), Brazen Beau (a filly out of the stakes placed city winner Anna Lizzie) and Super One (a half-brother to the Group Three winner Most Important).

Also by Super One we have a lovely colt out of Snow Flight, a ¾ brother to the dual Group One winning sprinter Viddora. The Frankel is a lovely colt out of the Group winning American mare Kiss Moon; he is a sharp looking colt who could run early.

Other highlights of the strong draft include an I Am Invincible filly out of the four times Group winner Skyerush, a Headwater filly out of a half-sister to the Group Three winners Bliss Street and Jade Marauder, a Hinchinbrook half-sister to the Group One placed Denmagic, a Press Statement filly out of the Group One placed Thinking Of You and an All Too Hard filly out of the Group Three placed Jalsah.

Yarraman has tried to send strong precocious types to the Magic Millions and in recent years have sold such high class horses as Houtzen, I Am Zelady, Invincible Star, Illustrious Lad, From Within and Time To Reign. We pride ourselves on breeding stakes winners and there has been a steady stream of them in recent years.

We continually upgrade our broodmare band as that is the most important thing. Our most famous sale graduate is Snitzel who has done amazing things at stud.

What has been your biggest near miss in the Magic Millions race series? That would be I Am Zelady who was in front only to get run down very late in the 2017 Fillies & Mares though she did win that race the year before.

Which particular yearling in recent years gave you the most pleasant surprise with the sale price? Last year we sold I Am Invincible/Tai Tai Tess colt for $2M which was unbelievable, he was just a standout animal and he handled the sale like a total professional. You don’t get many like him and buyers are prepared to go above and beyond to get them.

When you’re not working how do you like to spend your time? My work is my hobby which helps. Kids keep you busy and I love a game of golf.

What was your first job? I have worked at Yarraman from a very young age.

What do you give a damn about? Health is first and foremost, the older you get the more you realise it and obviously I care about Yarraman and all the people involved in it. The mine issues in recent times concern us greatly. l
