There is a new player at the 2019 Magic Millions with the Nagambie based Yulong Investments to present their first ever yearling draft, and a strong one it is too.

“We are preparing a select group of ten yearlings for the sale,” said Yulong’s Sam Fairgray, adding that “there is a good cross section of proven and younger stallions represented including the international stars Frankel and Invincible Spirit.”

“We currently have a broodmare band of around 130 that will keep growing and we are keen to make the industry aware that we intend to be a strong commercial force.”

What better way than to start with this exciting group of yearlings...

Lot 5 - bay filly by More Than Ready from Passion Cheval (by Fastnet Rock): Fastnet Rock has done a great job with More Than Ready mares and the reverse cross looks just as exciting with the Halo line combining so well with Danehill. This filly’s dam is a city placed daughter of the stakes winner Calming from the family of Group One sprinter War Artist. “She is strong and precocious, a real jump and run two year-old type.”

Lot 71 - brown filly by Dissident from Rockzel (by Zabeel): bred on a 5mx5f cross of Rolls via Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago, she is out of a half-sister to the Group Three winner Platinum Command from the prolific family of big race winners Danelagh, Vengeance Of Rain, Dizelle and Pinot. “She is a lovely, quality, athletic filly with plenty of length and scope; she has a lot of Zabeel about her.”

Lot 305 - bay/brown filly by Medaglia d’Oro from Zauberflote (by Singspiel): dam is a multiple city winning half-sister to the stakes placed Bouboulina from a strong international family; her relations including the Group One winners Irish Prize, Hatoof, Trading Leather and Mrs Penny. “A well put together, strong bodied filly with a really nice head and plenty of strength.”

Lot 342 - bay filly by Exosphere from Amaliehaven (by More Than Ready): from the same family as the Dissident filly, she is a daughter of a city placed winner whose grandam is the Perth Cup-Gr.2, 3200m and C.B Cox Stakes-Gr.2, 2400m winner Palatious, dam of Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1, 1200m winner Danelagh; in turn dam of Hong Kong star Vengeance Of Rain. “A big, strong, forward filly who reminds me of a horse I had a bit to do with at Arrowfield, the stakes winner Miss Bussell.”

Loty 434 - bay filly by I Am Invincible from Cajou (by Encosta de Lago): halfsister to the Group Three and Listed winning, Group One placed Allergic out of a Group Two placed daughter of the Listed winner Anacarde. This combination of I Am Invincible and Encosta de Lago boasts an outstanding 83.3% winnersto-runners strike rate. “A high quality filly, very good looking with strength and substance; she is bound to prove very popular.”

Lot 641 - chestnut filly by Frankel from Harlech (by Pivotal): bred on the same Frankel/Pivotal cross and hailing from the same family (one which descends from the legendary Mumtaz Mahal ) as the multiple Group One winner Cracksman, she boasts duplications of the wonderful mares Special and Natalma. “A really athletic good sized filly with a great bone and a lovely frame. More of a three year-old type with plenty of quality.”

Lot 706 - chestnut colt by Frankel from Kahara River (by Danetime): dam is a half-sister to the Group Three winner Perugina and the Listed winner Sovana, in turn dam of the Group winners Bocca Baciata, Topeka and Kalsa. Another of his half-sisters has produced the Group One winner La Pelosa. “A big, strong forward colt with good bone and plenty of presence. And he is a great mover, he just glides across the ground.”

Lot 784 - bay colt by I Am Invincible from Mamwaazel (by Exceed And Excel): first foal for a Group Three winner whose dam is a half-sister to the Group Two mare Always Divine. I Am Invincible has had five runners out of Exceed And Excel mares to date, four of whom are winners including the Group Three filly She’s So High. “A lovely type of first foal, he has plenty of strength and substance and he is going to be very popular.”

Lot 852 - bay colt by Sebring from Neena Rock (by Fastnet Rock): son of a dual Group Three winner whose dam is a half-sister to the US Group One winner Quiet American from the family of the high class stallion Fappiano. Descendant of the acclaimed matriarch Plucky Liege. “A neat, early-looking type colt who ticks a few boxes being by a proven stallion out of a classy race mare.”

Lot 858 - bay filly by Invincible Spirit from Next Meeting (by Street Cry): first foal for a daughter of the UK Group Three winner Summer Fete from a strong American family whose members include the stakes winners Musicanna, Majestic Mount, One Man Band, Overdose, Zaman and Up In Time. “A compact, racey two yearold type who, being by such a great international stallion, is bound to have great appeal to both type and pedigree enthusiasts.”

Bluebloods had a chat with Sam Fairgray after discussing the yearlings... How has technology and IT affected and influenced your business?

“It has been great in regards the information available to us. A lot of work goes into planning matings which is made easier by our access to pedigrees, crosses, etc. We also do a lot of research into feed and nutrition.”

If you could work on only one project for the next year, what would it be?

“To work on making Yulong become a world renowned breeding and racing operation, and that IS what I am doing so I am very lucky! When I started in the industry I dreamed of an opportunity like this, it really is the dream job.”

If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be?

“Human medicine, a cancer specialist, it would be great to be able to help out in that way.” l
