Corumbene Stud’s reputation for producing precocious, Gr1 winning juveniles remains unchallenged; think of Golden Slipper winners like Overreach and Sebring and Blue Diamond Stakes winner True Jewels. But the recent deeds of Overpass have reminded the market there is both value and longevity to be found in the farm’s boutique Gold Coast draft.

The talent of Amelia’s Jewel is unquestioned and on her home soil she had previously only been beaten once, yet the Corumbene bred Overpass was able to outrun her and rivals like Group 1 performers Bella Nipotina, Asfoora and Uncommon James, with a brilliant display of sustained speed to win the inaugural The Quokka. A $75,000 purchase, Overpass has now won $4.8 million, a more than reasonable return on investment by Darby Racing. The potential for another massive payday for the wider market lies in the stud’s outstanding 2024 Magic Millions draft.

Buyers will have to be patient and keep their powder dry awaiting the arrival of the first Corumbene offering which won’t sell until the Friday. Offered as Lot 774, this son of Deep Field out of the Tale Of The Cat mare Icedginger looks tailor-made for the Asian market as a strong half-brother to the Listed Fireball Stakes winner Samantha.

Corumbene’s Farm Manager Zoe Wilson gave us the lowdown on each of their seven strong draft beginning with this colt of which she said “He’s a lovely type with a great walk and attitude, this mare always seems to produce very nice types. He’s definitely a colt that will appeal to the Hong Kong market.”

The first Corumbene filly on offer hails from the same family, her grandam Loveday another half-sister to True Jewels this time by Danzero. This lady will go through as Lot 867 and is by first season sire Ole Kirk, the brilliant winner of both the Gr1 Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas, out of the four-time winning Hinchinbrook mare Lilith. “She’s a very neatly put together filly very much like her mother. She certainly looks a speedy, early type and also has that touch of attitude you find in good race fillies.”

In a quality draft the Pierro colt out of the Not A Single Doubt mare Lovelands may well prove the pick of the bunch, with Zoe very excited to get him to the Gold Coast. “He is a really, really nice colt. He’s the first foal of a sister to the leading Hong Kong galloper Southern Legend. He’s my pick of the draft with a great attitude, a really nice walk and carries plenty of presence. He is giving every indication he will prep up nicely and I expect when he walks out of his box he will make people take notice”, she explained.

Buyers looking for a ready-made filly shouldn’t bypass Lot 1100, a very nicely put together daughter of Pariah and the Lonhro mare Cloak Of Night. Carrying a similar coat colour to her damsire, this filly is a halfsister to four winners from as many to race for her dam, led off by the Chris Waller trained Amati, Stakes placed last season in Melbourne and remains in training. Zoe put it that “She is definitely a speedy looking type of filly and her preparation is going very nicely.”

The first crop of dual Gr1 winning juvenile King’s Legacy make their yearling sale debut on the Gold Coast and Corumbene will present an attractive daughter of his out of the four-time, metropolitan winning Snitzel mare Fulmina. Zoe said, “She’s a very neat well balanced filly and looks likely to be a nice, early running type for someone.”

Book Two offers buyers one of their last chances to buy a Menari, Corumbene taking his daughter out of Romincka to Bundall where she sells as Lot 1348. Dam of three winners so far, Romincka is out of Corumbene’s outstanding mare Hasna who was third in the Golden Slipper before dominating in both the Gr1 AJC Sires’ Produce and Champagne Stakes’. “She is a typical Menari, bigger and rangier than the average filly. Tall, she will grow into a lovely filly,” Zoe told us.

The Dunedoo farm’s last offering is one that comes with a pedigree oozing Magic Millions Classic potential. A colt by Astern, he is out of another daughter of Snitzel in Sheer Style who was amongst the better juveniles of her year winning twice including the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic at Ballarat before running third in the RL Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic. “He’s a nice style of horse. Over the first few weeks of his preparation this colt has matured and developed nicely and he has a great attitude. He is definitely one for buyers looking for a real racehorse.”

Corumbene’s policy of only taking their best stock to market is reflected in the farm’s exceptional success rate, there will be many canny buyers making a beeline for the Chester barn come early January.
