Cressfield
from 2024 MMGC Magazine
Cressfield are giving buyers a chance to access their best families with their 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft loaded with twelve fillies, and five colts. The farm has long built a reputation on their wonderful broodmare band, so this represents a huge opportunity for breeders.
How would you sum up your 2024 draft?
“Filly dominant. But with a nice spread of sires and types represented,” said Operations Manager Liesl Wickson.
Incredibly tough group winner Quilista won nine times and placed another nine times in 32 starts. Her third foal, a Snitzel filly, will be offered as Lot 75, and Quilista is a half-sister to group winner, Red Can Man, who is showing similar durability having won nine races in Perth and over $1.3million and is still racing. “A big powerhouse filly, plenty of substance, with great depth across her hindquarters.”
Gr1 winner Mid Summer Music has proven herself as a broodmare with Gr3 winner Hellfest (Fastnet Rock) and stakes placed two year-old winner Euphoric Summer (Not a Single Doubt). Her current yearling filly, Lot 935, is by exciting Gr1 winner Bivouac. “A neat, racey shaped balanced filly.”
What has been your most satisfying result at the Magic Millions?
“There have been many great moments and some great prices for horses, but honestly given how much effort goes into producing and prepping these yearlings, a sale with a 100% clearance is without doubt the most satisfying.”
Gr2 Ian McEwen Stakes winner Wild Rain won eight races and two of her first three foals are winners. Her yearling filly, Lot 362, is by four-time Champion Sire Snitzel, and is from the family of Northerly and Overpass. “A well-developed forward type with a good shoulder, girth and hip length.”
Proven Gr1 sire Wootton Bassett is an exciting addition to the Australian scene, and Cressfield will offer his filly out of Misstook (Fastnet Rock) as Lot 966. This filly’s dam is a full sister to brilliant Gr2 winning sprinter Passive Aggressive and Gr3 winner Missrock, from the family of Gr1 winner Mrs Onassis. “Thrown to her grandsire in Fastnet Rock, a big powerful filly with a lovely loose walk and great overstep.”
Regally bred filly, Lot 640, is by Gr1 winning two year-old King’s Legacy out of Epitomise (More Than Ready), a winning half-sister to Gr1 VRC Oaks winner Personal and three other stakes horses. “An attractive filly, with a lot of scope.”
Cressfield bred successful young sire Headwater and two lots have a connection to that brilliant sprinter. Lot 1058 is a filly out of tough racemare Black ‘n’ Tough, who won thirteen races, including two at Listed level, and a full sister to this yearling filly has recently won three times. Lot 597 is by Hellbent out of Headwater’s winning half-sister Dove Lake. “A classic style of thoroughbred, a solid well conformed type that is hard to fault.”
A Lope de Vega half-sister to Listed Wagga Wagga Cup winner Wicklow and group placed winner Waterford, Lot 347, is out of winning imported mare Wake Up. “A good walking filly with a great shape to her to hindquarter, combined with a neat rein makes her look like a fast type.” Pierata filly, Lot 91, is out of stakes placed winner Regimental Band, a daughter of Lilliburlero, a daughter of Gr1 winner Regimental Gal. “An exceptional maiden attempt from the mare, this filly doesn’t lack in strength or bone and by a sire set to make some waves.”

With only five colts in the Cressfield draft, one of the highlights for Gold Coast buyers must be Lot 85, as both sire and dam won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. By 2016 winner Capitalist, this colt is out of 2013 winner Real Surreal, whose only foal to race is a winner. Real Surreal is a half-sister
to group winner Benny’s Buttons. “A later foal that is developing extremely well and set to catch up to his peers, he has a lovely frame and will furnish into an imposing colt.” Gr1 winner Secret Agenda (Not a Single Doubt)’s colt by Capitalist (Written Tycoon) is Lot 150. Secret Agenda’s first foal is a recent winner, and this colt is closely related to Gr3 winner Enthaar (Written Tycoon).
“A compact, powerful and robust early type. A true Magic Millions yearling.”
Which past champion do you wish you could have seen at the races?
“I was working in NZ when I first heard about Sunline. Prior to then I hadn’t taken a lot of notice of the racing industry. There was something about her quirky, tough nature that appealed to me and in some ways opened the door for my interest in the industry.”
Who are the most influential people in the industry today?
“The people that have the most influence are the people with their hands on horse leads, the people that wake up early, that get their hands dirty, do the mundane tasks and put their personal safety on the line. Without them the industry would not function.”
