WELCOME TO
bridge of persia 14 OCTOBER 2013 I ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART I LONDON FUNDRAISING AUCTION GALA
CHAIRLADY’S MESSAGE
It is with immense pride that we bring the Magic of Persia Fundraising Auction Gala back to its home in London after six years. As we approach our 10-year anniversary, we have named this year’s fundraising event “Bridge of Persia”, to reflect our ongoing mission to build bridges of appreciation and understanding between Iran and the rest of the world. On the front cover of our catalogue, we are honoured to feature renowned artist Sia Armajani’s spectacular piece ‘Bridge’. Sia’s Bridge is a true reflection of the peer-to-peer development we have strived for through our endeavors. Our aim at Magic of Persia, has been to create a platform for cultural exchange; a space in which practitioners, academics, students, and a wider audience can unite to promote and expand Iranian culture and knowledge, hereby contributing to and molding its long-term advancement. I am often asked the question: why does Magic of Persia promote Persian culture as opposed to say European? As an art form, is Tanavoli’s Heech so much more beautiful and inspiring than Picasso’s Blue Nude for example? Or is it so inferior that it deserves our support to help it catch up? This question of course cannot be answered. Art is the most abstract and subjective medium we have as humans. Art is influenced by an infinite number of feeders such as history, geography, politics, economics, religion, technology, and of course aesthetics. It is the purest expression of our species – a footprint unbound by rules, regulations, red tape and even time. What I can say with conviction is that because of my background, Persian art and culture is close to my heart. I have the natural passion and willingness needed to contribute positively to this growing field. It is my hope and understanding that this path is being followed by a multitude of people around the world - all wielding their passion and the energy of their communities to focus on their specific areas of interest.
8
Magic of Persia’s success through the decade has been immeasurable. We are so grateful to the individuals, institutions and organisations that share our vision; those who have joined hands with us to make opportunities available to those who need our support. Naturally, without the artists and galleries who have generously donated their artwork, the charity would not be what it is today. We are indebted to our main sponsors who have made this evening possible. The inimitable Ali Bakhtiar has outdone himself once again bringing his magic from Dubai to the production of the Bridge of Persia Gala. Morris Associates have lent their excellent expertise to the design of the Exhibition of the Auction Highlights, truly showcasing the beauty of the donated works. And of course the Christie’s team - with us since day one, who continue to act as a bedrock to our fundraising efforts. We remain to grow in strength thanks to a dedicated team of staff, trustees, patrons, and volunteers who in the past year have worked tirelessly to bring together another star-studded event. The wave of our success has touched so many beyond our expectations. It is through a repetition of these actions, that the web of global culture and civil society is woven. Through each of our individual positive acts and initiatives we are building bridges of appreciation and thus understanding for people from all of the world, and all of its cultures to cross. We hope that with your support we will continue to grow and expand in this direction - one bridge at a time.

ABOUT MAGIC OF PERSIA
Magic of Persia (MOP) promotes Iranian art and culture to a wider audience outside of Iran, and strives to make a notable contribution to its long-term advancement worldwide. This is accomplished by establishing programmes in modern and contemporary Iranian art, music, media and academia in partnership with world-class institutions. MOP’s programmes include: The Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize (MOP CAP); a global search for the next generation of Iranian visual artists. Art residencies and exhibitions for young Iranian artists at the Delfina Foundation, Parasol unit and Royal College of Art in London. Scholarships and grants in higher education at the Royal College of Art, London Film School, and Goldsmiths University of London. A series of artists’ panel discussions entitled ‘Different Perspectives on Modern and Contemporary Iranian Art’ in collaboration with the British Museum. Family days bringing together more than 120,000 people at the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The charity’s primary source of funding derives from the auction of artwork generously donated by established and emerging Iranian artists. Conducted by Christie’s and held in Europe and the Middle East, the success of these fundraising events relies entirely on the participation and support of artists and patrons alike. Sponsorships from organisations and individuals also support MOP’s various projects.

THE AUCTION CONDUCTED BY CHRISTIE’S l 2013
Contemporary arts including artistic, curatorial, organising and writing practices are the fastest growing cultural sector across the region. Consequently there is a rising need to invest in the education and training of those who can take such complex collaborations on and guide them through to international signification. As the contemporary art world becomes a place from which we can also speak of the social, the economic, the political and the experiential, training for it needs to expand its intellectual base. The Curatorial/Knowledge program’s effort to look at curating as a research process that draws in numerous types of knowledge and produces far more than exhibitions, has now led to a cohort of graduates who are playing a major role in innovative practices across the globe. The MRes degree in Curatorial/Knowledge will allow candidates to take several seminars both in the program and in the Visual Cultures Department at Goldsmiths, in which the program is located. Beyond the courses, they will produce a dissertation that also includes a practice component to do with innovative exhibition and curatorial practice.

sixpillars.org Six Pillars is a London-based arts and media consultancy specialising in the arts and culture of the Middle East, particularly Iran. We are a not- for- profi t in London that grew out of a 6 episode radio programme in 2005 called: Six Pillars to Persia on arts – music radio station Resonance 104.4 FM . This six part series was inspired by the traveling thinker and activist Al Afghani, C 19th, who said “The castle of human happiness stands on six pillars of positive thought”. We treat each episode as a pillar in the bridge to contemporary Iran and its wider Persian heritage. The show continued into the next decade unfinanced and boasts an immense archive of conversations and related events.
Six Pillars highlights very select aspects of culture and thought. Events include charity fundraisers, art exhibitions, music and pop-up radio station commissions in UK and abroad. Our weekly show Six Pillars to Persia broadcasts live on air twice a week, with select shows online as “Listen Again”. Listen live on 104.4 FM across London, or resonancefm.com Podcasts (Listen Again service) are available for free, all information can be found online at sixpillars.org Six Pillars is run by Fari Bradley an Iranian reviewer, broadcaster and sound artist with over eight years experience working in Middle Eastern arts, working with BBC, art galleries, museums and art fairs internationally.

TERMS & CONDITIONS 1 . Christie’s acts as agent for the charity Magic of Persia. Unless agreed otherwise, the sale of the Lots will result in contracts made between Magic of Persia and the Buyer. 2. The Buyer shall be the person with the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer. 3. All bids are expressed in Pounds Sterling. 4. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his/her absolute discretion and in the case of error or dispute to put an item up for bidding again. 5. Subject to the auctioneer’s discretion, the striking of the hammer marks the acceptance of the highest bid and the conclusion of a contract for sale between the charity and the buyer. 6. Statements by the charity Magic of Persia in the catalogue or made orally or in writing elsewhere, regarding the authorship, origin, date, age, size, medium, attribution, authenticity, provenance, condition or estimated selling price of any Lot are merely statements of opinion, and are not to be relied upon as statements of definitive fact. Neither Christie’s nor the charity Magic of Persia are responsible for the correctness of any such statement nor for any other errors of description or for any other faults or defects in any Lots. Catalogue illustrations are for guidance only. 7. Buyers are responsible for satisfying themselves concerning the condition of goods and the matters referred to in the catalogue description. The artworks in each Lot are sold in the condition they are in. Magic of Persia accepts no liability for the loss or damage of artworks. 8. If a prospective buyer gives Christie’s instructions to bid on his/her behalf Christie’s shall use reasonable efforts to do so, provided these instructions are received no later than 24 hours before the sale. Bids should be placed in Pounds Sterling. If Christie’s receives commission bids on a particular Lot for identical amounts, and at auction these bids are the highest bids for the Lot, it will be sold to the person whose bid was received first. 9. The United States maintains economic and trade sanctions against targeted foreign countries, groups and organisations. There may be restrictions on the import into the United States of certain items originating in Iran. The purchaser’s inability to import any item into the US or any other country as a result of these or other restrictions shall not justify cancellation or rescission of the sale or any delay in payment. 1 0. Following the sale, the buyer must provide the charity Magic of Persia with his or her name, permanent address, telephone number and email address. 1 1 . All Lots are to be paid in full within thirty days of the auction. If the Buyer without prior agreement fails to make payment for the lot within thirty days of the auction, Magic of Persia may in its sole discretion store the lot at the Buyer’s sole risk and expense. 1 2.
