CHAIRLADY'S MESSAGE Dear friends, colleagues, supporters and MOP habitués, It’s hard to believe we’re eleven years old this year. MOP was started as an idea back in 2004, an exercise in cultural ground breaking as never before applied to the contemporary art scene in Iran. An organisation dependent on the pure muscle of passion and commitment, I can say in all modesty that the success of MOP in the last 10 years has been made possible by its committed and dedicated staff, its patrons and partners, the international artist community and above all the generous support of donating artists who see worth and value in our enterprise. We are an organisation that provides opportunities, platforms, space, art initiatives and cultural structures. Our bursaries, residency programmes, scholarships and grants through various notable international institutions like the Delfina Foundation, Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art, the London Film School, Goldsmiths University of London, and the British Museum have nurtured talent and helped to grow the next generation. This year’s notable project has been the launch of the MOP CAP Artist Directory, with the support of the British Council. Over 1,600 Iranian artists have applied to MOP CAP in the past seven years, their works archived for free public access. This will have a lasting legacy in the documentation and development of Iranian contemporary art.

4

Another initiative, under the rubric of ‘Curate Archive’, identifies three curators each year to put on a four-month online exhibition using the artists from the MOP CAP archive. We aim to further expand our reach and to grow deeper roots within the cultural bedrock of contemporary Iranian artistic practice. Our aim is to further strengthen our international partnerships, to raise global awareness in order to create an atmosphere of sustainability and expansion beyond our present brief. We are, if nothing else, hopeful. This hope has a purpose, aiming beyond the brief from which we started. Our commitments and objectives can only be sustained through joint efforts and the mutual reinforcement of those with a love of art, culture, and country. I invite you all to take part to see, to feel and to taste the moment in our enlightenment process so that you too can grasp what has been realised so far and what can be achieved in the future with your support. Let us join hands once again and break new ground together. Shirley Elghanian

ABOUT MOP FOUNDATION

A NON-POLITICAL, NON-RELIGIOUS, UK/US REGISTERED CHARITY

Established in 2004, Magic of Persia promotes Iranian art and culture to a wider audience and strives to make a notable contribution to its long-term advancement worldwide. This is accomplished by establishing programmes in modern and contemporary Iranian art, music, media and academia in partnership with world-class institutions. MOP’s Art & Education programmes include: A series of artists’ panel discussions entitled ‘Different Perspectives on Modern and Contemporary Iranian Art’ in collaboration with the British Museum Art residencies and exhibitions for young Iranian artists at the Delfina Foundation and Parasol unit in London Curate Archive, online residency Publication Grants Scholarships and grants in higher education at the Royal College of Art, London Film School and Goldsmiths University of London The Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize (MOP CAP); a global search for the next generation of Iranian visual artists The MOP CAP Artists’ Directory The charity’s primary source of funding derives from the auction of artwork generously donated by established and emerging Iranian and international artists. Conducted by Christie’s and Sotheby’s and held in the UK and the UAE, the success of these fundraising events relies entirely on the participation and support of artists and patrons alike. Sponsorship from organisations and individuals also supports MOP’s various projects.

#archiveseries is an online exhibition through the histories and geographies of contemporary Iranian art. It is realized in form of video, a succession of transitory frames that need to be continually reactivated by the viewer. Each series creates a different type of visual and suggest other methods of ordering. The space to which the user is exposed is about new subjectivities, new imagination and aesthetic models that involve reasons beyond the boundaries of art.

ABBOOKNESS Three original artist books STARTING BID: $13,000 THE FUNDS RAISED FROM THIS LOT WILL KICK START THE AMBITIOUS PROJECT OF THE DOCUMENTATION OF IRANIAN MOVIE POSTERS In this age of technological advancement and communication when emerging technologies continuously challenge the conventional concept and meaning of a book as a medium for the transfer of information, ABBookness attempts to capture the essence of a book. Bookness was a phrase coined in the 70s by Philip Smith to describe how the ordinary book is transformed into an actual medium of art, much like a canvas, and not just a means of disseminating information about art or indeed an art form in its own right such as Bookbinding. It allows the artist to express himself through a book in exactly the same way that he would through a canvas, a sculpture or an installation. Whilst Artist Books are not a new concept in the West, in the Middle East where it is actually probably much more desperately needed, to chronicle an artist’s ephemeral creations due to scarcity and limitation of museums, foundations and collectors, there have been few attempts to create them. ABBookness is also a continuation of a long-lived tradition of the art of bookmaking as the primary art form in the Islamic World. The art of painting and most other visual arts were born out of the art of bookmaking. Continuity in this practice in contemporary times may be transformed into Art Books where once again the book produced is the art object that the artists produce. -Ali Bakhtiari

NATASHA RIBOUD B.1986

EDCUATION Tehran University-Faculty of Fine Arts | Visual Communications, Masters of Arts, 2009

Photography became my passion when I discovered film almost ten years ago. I use traditional black and white processes to develop and print my photographs in my darkroom; however, I love experimenting with many photographic mediums and techniques that have passed their time, while I use digital for my color work.
