Following on from last month’s comedy festival joviality it’s time to get into the groove of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival with local and international acts performing across ten fabulous days. Artistic Director Michael Tortoni explains what’s in store at the festival which features some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time. I was also fortunate to talk with Joe Camilleri about the festival and his one night concert celebration of the music of Van Morrison. Despite only four short years together, the 1960’s iconic band The Mamas and the Papas produced some of that era’s most memorable music. Award-winning Australian musical “Flowerchildren’ tells the story of the band and returns to the Comedy Theatre this May. Matt Hetherington reprises his role as Papa John Phillips in this must see musical that delivers the songs and delves behind their stories. Costa Rolfe has written a great article reviewing the friendly neighbourhood rumble over the development of Fishermans Bend, clearly a highly
sought after area which will require carefully considered planning by both state and local governments. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and UFC just seemed to me to be growing in popularity by the minute. I wanted to know more about the controversial world of cage fighting and what it takes to be the best. John Donehue seemed to be the right man with the right credentials to ask, read more on page 26. There are some really great festivals on this May including the first ever Festival of Steve – designed to entertain, enlighten and inspire Melbourne’s marvellous modern men. For the ever increasing coffee aficionados in our midst, the Melbourne International Coffee Expo will brew some excitement as over fifty barista champions from across the world converge in Melbourne to compete for the coveted international title. Last but certainly not least, it’s our 7th birthday this May so let’s get the party started!

7TH ANNIVERSARY
IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY! By Lisa Quittner - Editor
When I mentioned at our last MagMedia production meeting that this May issue celebrates our 7th birthday, my publishers and team were stunned. Seven years already, 78 monthly issues out and apart from a couple team member departures and arrivals - most recently welcoming Elaine as our Business Development Manager, we are all as enthusiastic about working on this magazine as ever. While we have made some changes along the way, most notably a change to our hero magazine title from 3008Docklands to 3000Melbourne, our intention has remained the same throughout – produce the best quality lifestyle magazine that we can that informs our readers, complements and works for our advertisers, celebrates and promotes the interesting and intriguing people and events within this magnificent city. We are big on sharing and the introduction of our rotating neighbouring suburb insert magazines was implemented to highlight this. On behalf of all of our team as a community based publication I extend a hearty “Thank you” to our clients, many of which have been
TH
with us from the very start and to our readers, many of whom have also keenly supported us and maintained an interest in picking up their monthly issue. We also appreciate our more recent readers across Melbourne city and East Melbourne; your feedback has inspired us to improve and hopefully ‘positively surprise’ with every issue. Lastly, we have a great line up of long standing contributing writers, who are all respected commentators, advisors and achievers in their particular fields. Not just anyone can write for 3000Melbourne and I hope you have drawn from their great wisdom and advice.
HAPPY 9TH BIRTHDAY ALEX! Hoping you have the greatest birthday ever, you are the best (and only) sister I’ve ever had! Love your big sister, Charlie xox

CLUSTER – TAKING A DIFFERENT VIEW TO MELBOURNE’S STREETS
A new exhibition at City Gallery reveals the hidden patterns of street names that run throughout central and suburban Melbourne. Cluster presents some of Melbourne’s most interesting street ‘clusters’ from street’s named after the city’s founding fathers, to 1980’s football stars, to an entire Beatles-themed estate. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said Cluster is an intriguing exhibition revealing an untold Melbourne story. “The deliberate plotting of street names is an intriguing piece of Melbourne’s history,” said the Lord Mayor. “This exhibition reveals that coincidence is a rare factor in Melbourne’s street clusters. It gives us a whole new way of viewing the streets we live in.” Exploring the stories and patterns behind Melbourne street clusters has been an intriguing process for exhibition curator, Melbourne typographer and RMIT lecturer Stephen Banham.
“When I look at any map of Melbourne I no longer see it as a sea of streets, but as grouped clusters that are often disconnected from the surrounding geography,” said Stephen. “It’s bizarre how it changes the way you view the city. “There was an enormous spray of Australiana clusters around Federation, and then developers started calling streets after anything that came to mind. Pop culture, war, writers, 1980s footballers – even their wives and daughters,” added Stephen. In an age where the branded environment is considered to be reasonably new, this exhibition shows that our urban surrounds have always been branded. The exhibition catalogue includes an essay by Prof Graeme Davison AO, Melbourne’s pre-eminent historian. Cluster has now opened at City Gallery, Melbourne Town Hall and will be on display until July 30. For more information visit www.citygallery.com.au

FISHERMANS BEND – A TALE OF TWO CITY COUNCILS By Costa Rolfe Experienced old anglers don’t like to see outsiders moving in on their best fishing spots and honey holes. But that’s how the City of Port Phillip must have felt when Lord Mayor Robert Doyle announced an audacious takeover bid for Fishermans Bend, a prized 240 hectares of potential urban renewal located adjacent to the Yarra River, and on the inner city’s south-western edge. With its central position representing the lure of an inner-city lifestyle – and a key to the city’s unique cultural heritage – Fishermans Bend is also within close proximity of many of Melbourne’s most decongesting arterial roads, as well as rail and airport locations, making it an attractive residential location of the future. The Property Council of Australia has been firm in its position that Fishermans Bend should remain under the control of a single authority, in order to minimise the inevitable
conflict brought about by the visions of two local governments and the State government. Under Cr Doyle’s proposal, that single authority should be the City of Melbourne, with the municipality’s boundary being greatly extended to swallow the Fishermans Bend hook. Cr Doyle’s call to have the state government cede full planning control for Fishermans Bend to Melbourne City Council came as a genuine shock to the City of Port Phillip, however, whose geographical relationship with the precinct has been matched by extensive community consultation over the last two years. Of the 240 hectares in question, 217 belong to the City of Phillip, with just 23 coming under the City of Melbourne’s boundary. With an expected 50,000 new residents slated to one day take up residence in the Fishermans Bend precinct, so easing some of Melbourne’s inner-city housing crush, the City of Port Phillip had already undertaken extensive planning in
how best to address the developmental needs of this former industrial zone. Doyle’s proposal drew criticism in some quarters for blurring the boundaries between the big business, tourist-focused City of Melbourne and that of a local council, which would appear far better equipped to address the needs of the residents that live within that municipality on a day-to-day basis. Comparisons have also been drawn with the annexation of the Southbank precinct to the City of Melbourne from the City of South Melbourne in 1993, which whilst facilitating large-scale developments such as Crown Casino, is widely lamented as a somewhat soulless area where developer is king. But despite the neighbourly incursion, the City of Port Phillip remained steadfast in the veracity of their vision throughout, confident that their own planning strategy was best capable of achieving a viable and sustainable long-term development

an 18 month consultation with Docklands’ businesses, workers, residents and government agencies.
A $20 million extension of the Collins Street tramline is one of the key initiatives launched on April 29 as part of Access Docklands.
“Access Docklands builds on Docklands’ vision as a world-leading sustainable urban development precinct and ensures transport infrastructure operates as efficiently and effectively as possible,” Mr Guy said.
Access Docklands is a long-term transport plan that greatly improves the area’s trams, roads, pedestrian and cycle paths. The plan follows
“Docklands is the biggest Governmentprivate sector partnership in Victoria’s history and has attracted more than $8.5 billion of private sector investment
to the precinct. Access Docklands will ensure the right transport infrastructure is available for more than 60,000 employees and 20,000 residents who will call Docklands home by 2025.” The plan incorporates upgrades and improvements to the existing network including: • a $20 million extension of the Collins Street tram line into Victoria Harbour – currently under construction; • additional capacity on major through roads – Bourke Street and Batmans Hill Drive;
solution. According to Mayor Cr Amanda Stevens, the government’s objective for commercial growth can still marry happily with the long-term interests of the area’s future residents. “We are keen to work with the state government to realise a shared vision of a diverse and liveable community, where significant development and residential density can be appropriately serviced. This way, we can provide economic opportunities for the state and a well-planned inner urban community in Fishermans Bend.” Indeed, the overall amenity of the area – not just its feverish development – remains critical to Cr Stevens and the City of Port Phillips vision. “The City of Port Phillip recognises that the planning of Fishermans Bend is about constructing communities and not just buildings and we are working collaboratively with Places Victoria on the strategic planning of public transport, schools, roads, parks and utilities.”
• providing an additional 30 per cent vehicle capacity during peak periods; and • improved pedestrian and cyclist connections to the CBD, Northbank and Footscray. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said Access Docklands is an important blueprint and integrates with the City of Melbourne’s transport strategy, the Melbourne Transport Plan. To get the low down on the line up of sensational toe tapping talent at the festival we spoke to the Festival Artistic Director, Michael Tortoni. Congratulations on a fantastic line up of local and international acts for this year’s MIJF, how long have you been working on bringing this line up together? Generally we like to plan about twelve months ahead, in fact you need to because of competing touring schedules. Occasionally it takes longer and often because of the nature of an evolving program you lose the luxury of time and are forced to make quick decisions.

HERE COMES THE NIGHT -
THE MUSIC OF VAN MORRISON,
AN INTERVIEW WITH JOE CAMILLERI By Lisa Quittner For one amazing night only, Joe Camilleri, Vika Bull and Vince Jones will perform the music of Van Morrison as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. It was fun chatting to Joe about the concert and what’s planned for one enormous evening of music. You’ve been a long term fan of Van Morrison’s music, what was it about his style and music that drew you in?
I wanted to pay homage to a modern master and one that’s still alive. In the early days he was just another guy in a band for me, I liked a lot of artists and albums, I can’t really tell you why his album ‘Astral Weeks’ was in my top 5, I guess it was like a musical tapestry to me. As I grew as a musician I started to dig deeper into what I enjoyed musically and to appreciate the artists behind the music and Van Morrison was one of those artists. I seemed to like similar music to him and I liked that he was always trying something new, regardless of whether it worked or was crap, but haven’t we all?! Have you met the man? We were both at Montreux Jazz Festival one year, I was there with Joe Joe Zep and the Falcons, and we kind of connected through watching Ray Charles on TV. He is quite a complex character, there are so many stories that friends have told me about him. One time I was watching him perform and at first I thought it was really peculiar that he had his back to the audience and then I realised that it was about playing music to Van, not being an entertainer. To be honest I don’t think he would care less
that we are doing this tribute to his music but I believe his music is very deserving. It must be quite a responsibility to perform a tribute concert of such a well known artist with such well known songs? Anyone with some music talent can play someone else’s songs, the map to follow is there in the music but the difficulty comes in trying to get the same soulfulness and not losing what the song is about and its integrity. It is a challenge but a great one for a musician. The key is to be respectful and don’t change what doesn’t need changing, for example there is nothing to change in “Brown Eyed Girl” but there are other songs which can be deconstructed and reinterpreted, the same goes for songs that I have written. How have you chosen the songbook for the night? I have to be very aware of the audience, to many of those people Van’s music is sacred, and so we have to get it right. I know there are songs we just have to include without a second thought such as ‘Caravan’, ‘Have I Told You Lately’, ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ and ‘Wild Night’, and then there are songs that we want to perform for the audience for instance Vika wants to do ‘Days Like This’ and ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’, which actually along with ‘Here Comes The Night’ are the only two songs we are doing that Van Morrison didn’t write but made famous.
Personally I love ‘Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart’, ‘Threshold’ and ‘Cypress Avenue’, hopefully we will also include a couple of duets or Vika , Vince and I will all sing Moondance or something together. In a two and a half hour show we intend to play a lot of music. With John McCall you have put together The Voodoo Sheik, a ten piece brass band, will they also be performing on the night? Most of The Voodoo Sheik will be performing along with The Silo String Quartet, we also have vocalists so it’s going to really be a celebration of music not just a bunch of solo performances. Lastly, as a musician, how important do you think the MIJF is for Melbourne? It’s very important, like all festivals it brings things together and makes people aware of what’s happening. It gives local artists an opportunity to be involved and we have some brilliant local musicians here. I understand why, and it is great to have big international acts but it would be good to show more of the talent and extraordinary local acts - we have so many hard hitters in our own backyard. FLOWERCHILDREN
FLOWERCHILDREN – THE STORY OF THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS WITH MATT HETHERINGTON You’ve heard the music, now relive the times and music of the late 1960s iconic music phenomenon, The Mamas and The Papas as Magnormous brings back its award-winning original musical ‘Flowerchildren’ for a limited season to Melbourne audiences. Starring the highly acclaimed and awarded musical performer, Matt Hetherington reprises his 2012 role as ‘Papa’ John Phillips in this must see musical theatre spectacular returning to the Comedy Theatre this May. It was a pleasure to chat with Matt about the return of this musical theatre extravaganza. Flowerchildren was a smash last year with audiences and won a truckload of awards, is the cast and musical line up the same for this year’s production? It’s the same four performers, Casey Donovan, Laura Fitzpatrick, Dan Humphris and I as the main characters but this year the full cast is even bigger with some exciting additions. Is Flowerchildren purely about the music of The Mamas and Papas or will the audience get to know more about the power struggles and love triangles behind the scenes of the band?

Both really, as well as the music the show delves into the back stories behind the band. There are so many stories behind the music that even devotees of the band don’t know about. The show gives an extraordinary insight into what was going on at that time in history and the astounding things that were going on within the band at the peak of their

fame. These facts have been verified by several different sources and makes for a fascinating story leading into the things that went on in their actual recording studio time – this was a band that literally lived and breathed the music. The Mamas and The Papas have sold a phenomenal 40 million records worldwide despite the fact the band was only together for 4 years, their music remains familiar and endeared 40 years later, why do you think this is, is it just the purity of the music and incredible vocal harmonies? At the bottom level I think the songs John Phillips wrote were unbelievable; all so well constructed with his ability or gift to tie these four different parts together to make up an amazing whole that created their remarkable sound. They were able to peak just at the right time in history where the songs commented on society at the time with beautiful melodies and overlapping harmonies. All through the years people have been able to go back and attach themselves to either the authenticity of the themes and lyrics or the sounds that captured that era. Speaking of John Phillips, clearly he was a musical genius but quite bizarre, for want of a better word, as a person. What is it like playing Papa John in the show; do you connect into the mindset of John Phillips to be able to portray him? I try to; I’ve done a lot of research. John Phillips was a musical genius and I think that’s what allowed him
to live the way he did. He was a natural leader, he knew what was needed to make the music as good as it was and he wouldn’t compromise on it. There are certain qualities and characteristics of his that I can identify with such as his desire to be a perfectionist and the passion to strive to make things the best they can be. John Phillips was also a tyrant and although they all got up to crazy things back then it would be unfair to compare what musicians do now and what they did then, drugs are far less prevalent today than they were in those times. Although much of what he did in his personal life I don’t approve of, he is an extraordinary and interesting character to play who had a massive heart and a beautiful ability to put words and melodies together that spoke to millions of people, and that takes a fascinating mind to be able to do that. Is there audience interaction in Flowerchildren? I really like the way (Flowerchildren) writer Peter Fitzpatrick has drawn the characters. We have parts in the show where the characters have monologues and we speak to the audience and take them behind the scenes to tap into what the band was thinking while they were
recording their songs. It really opens up the window into what was going on behind the destructive behaviours throughout their time. Do you have a highlight of the show or a favourite musical number? All of the songs, it’s not often a performer can say that! I think Creeque Alley is great and tells the story of how the band got together. I also love singing ‘San Francisco’ towards the end of the show and of course ‘Monday Monday’, but they are all not only great songs to listen to but fantastic songs to perform. Congratulations Matt, I believe you are about to release your debut album, what’s the style of your album? It’s guitar based pop rock and predominantly original songs along with a few covers. It’s an opportunity to share my life through my music and I’m really proud of it so far. It will certainly be available after the show at Flowerchildren.

RETHINKING UNIVERSITY FUNDING
By Tom Elliott
Since the start of the year there has been considerable debate about the Federal Governments education policies. While most people seem to think the Gonski reforms to primary and secondary are a pretty good idea, virtually no one is clear (a) how much they’ll cost, or (b) from where the
necessary money will come from. A recent speech by Higher Education Minister Craig Emerson suggests part of the answer to (b) will be achieved by stripping cash from tertiary education, ie universities. And while this new found fiscal rectitude is praiseworthy on its own, it represents bad news for the 50% of school leavers hoping to earn a degree.
make two far-reaching changes: (1) laudably, the number of university places open to school leavers would be increased substantially; and (2) static government funding meant that from ’89 onwards, tertiary students would be expected to part pay the cost of their degrees. This payment was termed the Higher Education Contribution Scheme or HECS.
so perplexing. On one hand the government he represents has a stated aim of lifting the proportion of people under 35 who have a degree to 50%; yet on the other hand, of all the areas where Gonski money could be raised (think welfare, defence, the bloated public service, etc.), the tertiary education sector bore the brunt of the cuts.
When I entered Melbourne University in 1986, a continuing legacy of Whitlam era reforms meant that my education was entirely free. The prevailing view at the time was that higher learning was a ‘social good’ that benefited all of society and not just the lucky graduate.
Between 1989 and the present day, the proportion of school leavers entering higher education has risen to almost 50%. Despite this, however, the amount of money the federal government devotes to the sector has remained at around 5.5% of GDP. In summary, over the past three decades we’ve made a collective value judgement to spread our higher education dollar far more thinly than was once the case. As a result, university is both less elitist than it once was (in terms of entry), but more expensive once you’re in.
John Dawkins made a controversial yet foresighted change to university funding back in the late ‘80s when he created HECS. Let’s hope that his successor, Craig Emerson, displays similar foresight before he cuts present day tertiary education spending any further.
Back then, only around 21-22% of school leavers attended university, and the annual commitment of funding equal to approximately 5.5% of GDP meant that tertiary institutions had enough money to meet demand. Unfortunately, this state of affairs changed in 1988-89 when the review into education by Hawke Government Minister John Dawkins decided to
It is for this reason that Minister Emerson’s recent decision to strip $2.3bn from university budgets is

BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE AT MEETINGS

NOT SETTING AN AGENDA
INVITING TOO MANY PEOPLE
Business: Isaacs & Cole Chartered Accountants
When you know a client well or think you have a firm grasp of what’s expected, it can be tempting to simply wing a get-together. This is never advisable. Always prepare an agenda you can refer to throughout the meeting to ensure you remain in control of the direction and that all essential topics are covered.
For a smooth and efficient business meeting, it is essential that you limit the number of people you involve. An overly large meeting quickly becomes unwieldy and ineffective. Take a tip from Google and limit meetings to fewer than 10 members where possible.
FAILING TO DECIDE ON ACTIONS FOR PEOPLE
The location you choose for your business meeting can have a huge effect on its outcome. While a coffee shop or restaurant may be acceptable for casual catch-ups, they do not offer the professional air crucial for successful meetings.
Time in Southbank: 18 Months Why Southbank: Centrally located - easy for clients to visit, great vibe and views along the river and plenty of amazing restaurants to choose from. Your Business in a Nutshell: An accounting firm that offers strategic advice, technical expertise & personalised accounting services to businesses & individuals, acting as your trusted adviser and not just to provide transactional services. What is your definition of success in business: Getting to know a client by working with them over time & seeing them reach their goals; I genuinely get a buzz out of it when they do. Biggest mistake business owners can make: Trying to do everything for the business themselves instead of getting a support network around them. Biggest strength business owners can leverage: A genuine desire to understand who they do business with, and how they can impact their customers in a positive way. Most surprising discovery in Southbank: The array of street art & buskers that keep a walk along the river interesting. Most important tools: My iPhone and a great support team of accountants & admin staff. Biggest hurdle: An ongoing challenge is juggling a growing business and a growing family. 3 attributes needed for success in business: Determination, flexibility & passion for what you do. Words of advice: Schedule time to work on your business and goals no matter how busy you are, and know that you get out of life what you put into it.

COMPOUNDING… The word itself implies a powerful meaning, if you ask me. Let me assure you, it is!
can make best use of compounding over a longer period of time.
In financial terms, compounding refers to an asset’s ability to generate earnings, which is then added to original sum and re-invested. The earning rate can be the same, but because the re-investment sum is growing, so to do the physical returns.
Westfield listed on the stock exchange in June 1960. A $2,000 investment back then into Westfield shares, allowing the dividends to be re-invested and without taxation impacts, would have been worth $320,000,000 in 2006 when Westfield peaked at $24.
CASE STUDY –
COMPOUNDING IN SUPER -
Richard invests $1,000,000 in an airline. The first year, the shares rise 10%. The investment is now worth $1,100,000. In year two, the share appreciates another 10%, so his investment value rises to $1,210,000.
The power of compounding in superannuation becomes even more powerful due to low tax rates. Younger people in particular dismiss super contributions on the basis that they cannot access the money. But take a look at the comparison below –
Rather than Richard’s investment growing by $100,000 (10%) in year one, it grows $110,000 in year two, even though the growth in the company remained at 10%.

marketing campaigns for UFC, which he suspects has kept the Victorian Government at odds with what John and others see as the safety reality of the cage.
MMA EXTREME MEET JOHN DONEHUE By Lisa Quittner I had never been a great fan of boxing, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) or the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The inspiration to watch two people deliberately set out to knock each other out had always escaped me, but as they say, a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous. I set out to do an article on what I perceived as a sport that has grown in popularity at an increasingly rapid rate. I did not expect to discover a sport that apart from appearing to be ‘barbarian and lawless’ is actually tightly controlled and encompasses the highest degrees of discipline and skill in martial arts and physical training. I was enlightened by 4th degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Judo Black Belt, former fighter, international trainer and referee, bodyguard and Head Coach at MMA Extreme clubs, John Donehue.
magmedia.com.au
26
John started out as a teenager taking up boxing and kick boxing classes, deciding to hit the skies and travel abroad he landed in the United States and began training with champion kick boxer Bill Wallace who introduced John to legendary Judo and Grappling master, Gene LeBell. He became the only Australian and one of only 5 Black Belts in the world to train under LeBell along with other notables at the highest echelons of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu such as Rigan Machado.
In time John competed in the Machado U.S.A Competition team winning twice in the Nationals as well as a host of gold and silver medals in international competition. John has refereed in the Extreme Fighting Championships, the U.S televised version of The Contenders as well as training and coaching Real American Wrestling (R.A.W) teams with Rico Chiapparelli and working with top international fighters including Randy Couture and Dan Henderson. Today, although still travelling extensively, John is dedicated to his Extreme MMA clubs and helping others achieve their goals, whether on a professional level or for fitness. “I have been extremely fortunate to train with the people that have been regarded as the best in the world, it has allowed me to gain an insight into what has it taken to make them the best and given me the knowledge to pass on to my students to help them achieve becoming the best. At the highest level, we all know technique, but it’s the little things that can make the greatest difference.” Just ask Melbourne Storm, who John has worked with as a tackle coach over the past decade. Closer to home John has worked with AFL teams including Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Brisbane Lions, Carlton as well as Port Adelaide and Essendon in the 2013
pre-season. John has imparted both the physical techniques for correct tackling manoeuvres and foot work, as well as instilling the right mental attitude in players, providing coaching staff with an insight into which players possess the attitude, determination and will to handle the duration of a four quarter contest. As MMA increases in popularity in Australia I ask John why elite martial artists at a professional level would risk their safety and career entering into MMA & UFC rings and cages, I was surprised and relieved by John’s explanation of ‘man’s inherent nature’. “Testosterone and man’s desire to test themselves has been around since day dot. We always want to challenge ourselves, we are competitive and driven people that want to achieve the best. The reality is that the incidence of injury in the UFC or MMA arenas are really minimal, more serious injuries are sustained in training than in the ring or a cage and I would suspect that more injuries would be seen in a weekend netball game or junior football or rugby game, as we have sadly seen recently, than in MMA or UFC”. The cage aspect of MMA bouts is one that has been banned in Victoria. As John explained and agrees, the visual concept of cage fighting does conjure up images of barbarianism especially in international
“My friend and partner Joe Cursio and I organised the first MMA fight in Victoria many years ago. Back then a negative connotation in the press was apparent and subsequently the state government took the view that the sport was barbaric. The truth is that the cage environment is actually safer for both competitor and spectator in MMA as with wrestling, take downs and Jiu Jitsu sweeps there is a chance of competitors being pushed outside of the ring - it has happened. “The cage provides a buffer and safety net for both competitor and spectator. The UFC has tried to intervene here without much luck to date but as the sporting capital of the country it seems crazy to allow N.S.W and QLD to take tourist dollars away from Victoria where the cage is legal and the sport is subsequently thriving” John adds. Despite John’s credentials and work in and out of the competition ring, he is strongly focussed on providing a fun and enjoyable experience for members at his Melbourne and Byron Bay clubs. “Our members are made up of people from all walks of life from young kids, students, doctors, housewives etc that are looking for a good work out somewhere other than the usual gym environment. We also train BJJ and MMA for competition and MMA professionals ready to reach the next level. Kick boxing, wrestling, boxing – there are many avenues available depending on what you are looking for. We are equipped to train anyone and everyone, we want everyone to enjoy their training and interact with other people, it’s important to enjoy the social aspect of getting fit too and we aim to provide a friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in the door,” said John. “We offer free trials so the hardest part is just walking through the door. Everyone is welcome no matter your level or level of experience.” For more information visit: www.extrememma.com.au

EPWORTH FREEMASONS
ONE APPOINTMENT AT ONE LOCATION FOR PEACE OF MIND WHY HAVE A BREAST CHECK? The good news! - Community awareness of breast disease, including breast cancer, has improved significantly over recent years. It’s in the papers, on the news, on the web and it can happen to anyone, anytime. The regular prominence of high profile celebrities drawing attention to this subject is both legendary and remarkable. The fact is that about one in eight Australian women develop breast cancer

at some stage in their lives, with many other breast problems also causing concern. But the truth is that women often have a tendency to put off seeing a doctor for something that may or may not be serious. Yet early detection and treatment is vital in the successful management of breast disease. The Epworth Freemasons Breast Clinic located in East Melbourne was established in 1986 to meet the special needs of women in this very personal area of health. Because everything is
available on site during the first visit, the stress and fear of waiting for results is alleviated. Over the years, many women have come to rely on the expertise at the Clinic to record annual results and advise of any changes in the breast area. According to the Manager of the Breast Clinic, Joy Millen, what makes the Epworth Freemasons different is the model of care, “You don’t need a referral, you won’t feel rushed, you will get individualised advice and treatment, and you will be seen by a female doctor who has a special interest in breast health.” She also adds “We incorporate a multidisciplinary team that provides a comprehensive service under one roof within a private space. Each patient has a consultation with a doctor to discuss their breast issues and management, a mammogram and if needed a breast ultrasound is taken immediately. A breast radiologist then reports these results immediately so that our doctor can discuss them with
the patient before leaving. Should the doctor feel that a specialist opinion is required, a breast surgeon visits the clinic each day to enable a Specialist consultation as well. All of these services are provided within one appointment.” (approximately four hours). To be able to reduce the amount of time where women worry and may expect the worst is the most valuable asset of any health service and to be able to access all the tests within the one location at the one appointment makes it even more so, she says. The Breast Clinic is located at 113 Albert St, East Melbourne Phone 03 9418 8162 for an appointment Car parking is available at a reduced rate and the Clinic is well serviced by public transport.

In the classic Disney film Alice in Wonderland (one of my personal favorites), we see the Mad Hatter as a character who has made a deal with time to save him from execution however, he is now relegated to a never-ending tea party and must “move down often”. Throughout the movie, the Mad Hatter pulls various items from his hat including some other smaller hats. Much like the Mad Hatter, we each have a tendency to make a deal with time in order to save ourselves in some way. There sometimes feels like there isn’t enough time to complete all the tasks that we “must” get done. As such, we draw ourselves into a never ending tea party where we chase ourselves around in circles, trying to answer all the riddles in life all the while, always feeling like we’re chasing time. When we work ourselves into this state, we often focus on the one key hat we are wearing, neglecting
our other, smaller hats that keep getting moved down the priority list. If we apply the character of the Mad Hatter to the roles we play in today’s society, we find that we too are always chasing time and neglecting one of our “hats” to focus on
a Wife hat and a Manager hat. That’s probably not all the hats you would have but even so, that’s a lot of hats! At times, we have the tendency to wear some hats more than others, and in certain areas this is required (work for example). Sometimes however, it can lead us to neglect a hat we have

another. The hats we wear are many and varied. Sometimes, we don’t even know that we’re wearing them, until we get asked some specific questions around who we are when it comes to different areas of our lives. People easily change “hats” for each area of life. Imagine that you had a different hat for every aspect of yourself. You could have a Mum hat, a Daughter hat, a Friend hat,
hidden or put to the side. Reclaiming that hat when you’ve set it aside for another for so long, is not always an easy task and often finding this hat again, can cause us some stress. When you’ve decided to bring a hat out of storage, it can be easy to get enthusiastic about doing so and throw ourselves fully into this role. We forget that the other hats also need to be cared for.
A small, gradual change is often the best way to integrate a long lost hat. It ensures that all of your other hats are cared for in the transition and that they are easy to pick up again, when you need a specific hat for a specific area of life. The key is to recognise that we have many hats. Once we do this, we can look at each of them, evaluate how much “head time” they get and make small gradual changes to ensure that all of our hats get appropriate time on show. With regards to making deals with time, sometimes, (and this is something I have recently learnt myself) it’s in our best interest to recognise that there are only 24 hours in a day and that sometimes, saying “no” rather than taking on yet another hat, can be more beneficial for us in the long run, allowing us to do away with the “Mad” so that we can simply be “Hatters”.. It scares me everyday the hatred that swarms within our schools and community. Bullying. We all know what it means. We have heard it. Most of you have probably have experienced it in some shape or form, either directly or indirectly. I have to ask, are we showing enough kindness? As a mum to a gorgeous little boy, people often ask me “what kind of person would you like him to become?” Intelligent. Smart. Creative.
Independent. These are often the answered expected. Maybe often given by other mums? My response is kind. I want my son to be kind. I stood on a podium last month to teach and inspire the youth of today that “sticks and stones don’t have to break your bones”, I gave a message of kindness and love. My message, kindness is better then anger. Love is better then anger. And with a little kindness comes inner confidence and belief to those that suffer at the hands of others.
Because with kindness, you show someone else you are not playing their games, you are better, and you stand for something stronger. Kindness is infectious, kindness is contagious. It is inspiring and it is empowering. And maybe, just maybe, there is a glimpse that some of your kindness will rub off on others. Because if every good deed and every good will becomes like a cyclone of positive inspiring energy amongst this world, who knows what it would become?

IN CONVERSATION WITH BRAXTON MILES FINDING HIS WAY By Jane M Hutchinson & Nandita Chakraborty The twists and turns of the television studio presented as a labyrinth, as if the signs and corridors were deliberately designed to bamboozle Braxton. As he walked, Braxton felt his heart pound and the heat of his body building up under his suit. The sea of voices behind him fuelled his anxiety, spurring him on to find a way out of the studio. The place, the people, and the incident were suffocating Braxton. Bursting through a fire exit door triggered off the alarms and the sirens rang out. The crisp air and open space of the car park relieved Braxton from an anxious state for a moment, before he quickly assessed where he was and where Jack, his driver, would be waiting for him with the car. Scrambling to find his phone in his suit pocket, Braxton typed in the pass code. ‘Come on, come on …’ he muttered in frustration, waiting for his phone to start up. ‘Jack, Jack where are you?’ Braxton blurted to his driver, Jack. ‘I’m waiting out the front where I dropped you off,’ Jack replied. ‘Ok, I’m … umm… Oh, where am I?,” Braxton said. ‘I’m, I’m in the car park around the side of the building – the side that faces the city.’ ‘No worries. I’ll be around in a minute.’ Jumping into the safe haven of his car, Braxton slumped in the backseat and contemplated the events of the morning. Jack, who had been Braxton’s driver for almost a decade, was a trusted confidant and had seen it all before with Braxton. The two men drove in silence towards no particular destination.

Within minutes, Braxton’s phone started buzzing, one call followed by another. Reluctant to talk, Braxton killed each call and continued the drive with a fingertip held close to the divert button. Finally, he set the ring tone to ‘silent’.
The shrill ring of Jack’s phone broke the silence between the two men. ‘Braxton, it’s your Mum,” Jack said. “She’s calling me, I guess, looking for you.’ ‘I can’t talk to anyone not yet,’ Braxton said. ‘Don’t answer it!’ Richard was at home that morning watching the interview. ‘Hello Richard. It’s Mrs Miles how are you?’
The pictures, awards and film memorabilia flanking the walls of Karl’s apartment were like a spark, reigniting Braxton’s ego. Glancing at a framed picture of himself and Karl at the premier of his movie just a few years ago reminded Braxton of where he’d come from and how hard he had worked to get success.
buying,’ Karl said. ‘I only open the shop for paying customer, these days.’
Braxton mused to himself: “How could some B-grade morning show host think she could get the better of him?” ‘Hey mate,’ Karl greeted from the top of the staircase. ‘I saw your interview this morning. You did great!’
Floating out of Karl’s apartment, Braxton pulled out his phone and clumsily scrolls through the list of contacts to find Jack’s number.
‘Oh, yes. Mrs Miles,’ Jack responded cheerily. ‘I’m very well, thank you. And you?’
‘So glad you didn’t put up with her garbage. I could see exactly where she was heading with her line of questions.
‘Have you heard from Braxton? I’ve just seen the morning news and he’s not answering his phone.’ ‘Yes, I did see the interview - it wasn’t good’ ‘I’m really worried about Braxton and I just hope that he is not with Karl.’
‘You handled it perfectly, in true BM style’ Karl grinned. ‘I know, she tried to set me up,’ Braxton said. ‘And you know I’ve been around the traps long enough to see a Rottweiler coming.’
‘I’m sure he’ll be in his car, Mrs Miles. If I hear anything, I’ll let you know’ ‘Thank you Richard. You’re a good man. Talk soon.’
‘Oh mate, this will only make your ratings go up even higher,’ Karl beamed.
Jack and Braxton were still driving with no particular destination and Braxton slummed on the beat seat. ‘Jack, I want to go see Karl’ said Braxton surfacing from his lull. With hesitation Jack asked ‘Do think that’s a good idea?’ ‘I know what you are going to say but its what I need right now and besides I’ll be left alone at Karl’s.’ Braxton starts scrolling through his phone looking for Karl’s number. ‘Karl, hi its Braxton.’ ‘Braxton, mate! Long time, no …” ‘Are you at your place? I’m on my way over’ ‘Yeah ... sure. See you when you get here. You alright mate?’ Braxton hung up without answering. Jack parked the car out the front of Karl’s apartment block. As Braxton opened the car door, he paused for a moment and caught Jack’s eye and look of disapproval. Braxton knew that look all too well and tried to blow it off. ‘Great, thanks Jack. Won’t be long, call you when I’m ready. OK?’ Entering Karl’s extravagant bachelor pad, Braxton recalled all the good times he’d had here: the parties, all-night benders, the stories and tales that those who had played hard by his side late into the night and would never tell a living soul.
‘And just wait for the follow up interviews! They will be throwing money at you to tell your story.’ Braxton went silent. He began to feel at ease, knowing that Karl’s place was exactly where he needed to be right now. Karl, who was somewhat oblivious to Braxton’s state of mind, asked: ‘So Braxton, how’s the next film shaping up?’ ‘You better have a part for me, as I don’t want to slip from the A list,’ Karl grinned. ‘And, besides, I really could do with the cash right now.’ ‘You don’t need the money,’ Braxton replied. ‘Have a look at this place!’ ‘And, anyway, you’ve got your ‘other business’ to keep you going.’ Without skipping a beat, Karl shot back: ‘My other business comes at a price.’ Braxton didn’t need anyone else to put anymore pressure on him at that moment. He was still calming his thoughts and contemplating how the hell he was going to sort out the mess he’d just created, and it wasn’t even 12pm. ‘So anyway, Karl is your shop open this morning?’ Braxton asked ‘Well, it depends if the customer is browsing or
‘When have I ever not fixed you up,’ Braxton batted back. ‘And besides, do you want a role in the next film or not?’ Karl went silent. ‘Just give me your top-shelf stuff and you can power trip on those other rouges that you run with.’
‘Jack, it’s Braxton. Come and get me, I’m all good to go. We’ve got to get over to Richard’s place.’ Braxton hung up and looked at the call screen of his mobile. His phone hadn’t stopped buzzing since he’d left the studio. He still wasn’t ready to return or take any calls, and left the ring tone set on silent. At Richard’s apartment, Richard sat at his dinning room table, reading over his private journal. Flicking the pages over, Richard spots an old birthday card that looks like it came from another lifetime. Opening the card, the image of his beautiful ex-wife and baby daughter captivated him. Carefully taking the photo out and starred at the picture. He began to contemplate love, loss, life and relationships. The brisk knock at the door shattered the painful silence. Richard stood up quickly, closing the journal as he turned to see who was at his front door. At the doorway, Richard stood face to face with Braxton. The paradox of how Richard could justify his life began to surface in his mind. But now how would he deal with the man who stood before him? Like the story? BOOK REVIEW BY REBECCA HOWDEN ‘Steeplechase’ by Krissy Kneen Simmering darkly with unspoken traumas and longings, Steeplechase is a compelling novel about the tremulous bond between sisters. The first non-erotic work from Brisbane writer Krissy Kneen, following on from the memoir Affection and short story collection Triptych, this is a stirring Australian Gothic where the tangled threads of art, desire and madness are sensually, unsettlingly evoked. Bec Reich is 40 years old. A painter and a university art lecturer, she masks her loneliness with a cold sense of reserve and an obsessive devotion to her work. Against her judgment, she is slipping into an affair with one of her students, a talented 23 year old enamored both with her and with the legend of her sister Emily – a captivating figure of the Australian contemporary art scene now living in Beijing. Brilliant, dangerous Emily – famous for her nightmarish paintings, her beguiling use of light, and her schizophrenia – is as passionate and erratic as Bec is withdrawn. A “terrible thing” from their childhood has created a schism between the sisters, and they have been estranged for over 20 years. Now, as Bec lies in bed recovering from a gall bladder operation, Emily calls, inviting her to visit her in Beijing for the opening of her latest art show. As the narrative slips back and forth in time, Bec is drawn back into memories long smothered of her childhood with

Emily. Growing up on a sprawling, windswept property in rural Brisbane with only their grandmother – a tough and wiry “nugget of a woman” – and their mute, mentally ill mother for company, the girls are locked in a claustrophobic bond. The gloomy wildness of the Australian landscape is richly rendered – the dry creek bed, the “flat scrubby paddocks stretching away over the hill”, the pale golden glow of the trees being stripped away as the sun sets. This provides the perfect backdrop for the dark, imaginary world of Emily’s games and delusions as she slowly slips further and further away from reality. Kneen vividly captures the anxiety of fifteen-year-old Bec, despairing at being left behind while Emily is “taken” by schizophrenia. “All our hard-earned intimacy is stripped away,” she writes. “She whispers to herself when before she might have whispered to me. She plays games with the wind and the tall grasses by the gate but when I try to drag her to play one of our own games she stands and stares as if the real world is just an echo of something, a trick of the light.” It is a disorienting experience that is recreated decades later in Beijing, as Bec struggles to keep up with her sister’s wildly fluctuating moods and the same disturbing hallucinations. The past and present continue to collide paths as the novel hurtles towards a visceral, unforgettable climax. There is catharsis, and moments of strange tenderness that bring relief from the chilling atmosphere of much of the novel. This blend of the warm and sensual with the dark and disturbing makes Steeplechase an impressive first novel, with clear, precise prose and expert pacing that will have you captivated from start to finish.
