3000's Movie Review

I’ve heard people say that every 7 years we enter a new life cycle. After 7 great years as Editor of this magazine the time has come to say farewell. The passion and drive has never altered, but all good things must come to an end and I think it is time to move out of my comfort zone, test my skills and allow someone else the opportunity to take over the reins of what has been a fabulously enjoyable ride. Our celebrity features this month seem to fit in well with the theme of my final issue. Christine Anu and Todd McKenney have withstood the test of time; their success has grown through hard work, integrity and a promise to always deliver. It is such a privilege to have had the opportunity to speak with both these talented artists and share their latest achievements and shows with you.

great people along the way that I am proud to call my friends, but I guess the hardest part is leaving our great MagMedia Team - Belle, Susan, Will and Chris, and most of all, Susan de Kretser, our 3000Melbourne Graphic Designer who literally brings our pages to life and makes me look good! While I’m certainly no Shakespearean, the expression 'parting is such sweet sorrow' seems to keep replaying in my head. While I am sad to say ‘farewell’ for now, I also feel excited for the future and what the next 7 year lifecycle has in store for me. Thank you to every valued reader, our writers, all the PR and marketing people and our loyal and supportive clients. Please keep supporting the wonderful work of the 3000 Melbourne Team into 2014 and onwards, this little mag has outlasted many of the big guys in the city, and seriously rocks!!!

In contrast, Matt Okine and Kiyomi Vella may be the proverbial ‘new kids on the block’ but they are kicking some serious backside locally and internationally with their vast talents and ongoing success.

Wishing you all a fabulous 2014!

The hardest part about moving on is actually taking that first step. I have met so many

Melbourne leads the nation in catering for population growth

Melbourne leads the way in Australia in catering for future population and employment growth according to statewide land supply reports released by Minister for Planning Matthew Guy. The Urban Development Program (UDP) reports cover Victoria’s 19 regional centres including Melbourne’s outer suburbs and assesses how much land is available for potential residential and industrial development. Mr Guy said the state’s regional centres also have more than enough land for any future population growth. “We now have a complete picture for Victoria. It’s clear that there is plenty of land for future development and plans to maintain supply. It is critical that we continue to identify land to drive industry, jobs and housing growth in regional centres,” Mr Guy said. Mr Guy added, “we are already showing that we are directing housing growth sensibly and sustainably. In the past

year, five new precinct structure plans were approved, adding around 19,000 potential house blocks in Melbourne’s newest suburbs, while we had a record 179,400 potential dwellings coming from major apartment developments.” Melbourne’s outer suburban and regional centres also show there are no critical shortages of residential or industrial land anywhere in Victoria. “Right across the state, there are plans in place to ensure we can gradually open up residential and industrial land for at least the next 20 years, while protecting agricultural employment land,” Mr Guy said.

COVER STORY

CHRISTINE ANU HITS ‘REWIND’ WITH AN ENCORE THE ARETHA FRANKLIN SONGBOOK ENCORE TOUR By Lisa Quittner Beautiful, bright and soulful with an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, Christine Anu’s long list of awards and celebrated career achievements across music, theatre, dance, film, television and children’s entertainment, as well as an advocate and for women’s and indigenous issues has endeared her as an inspiring Australian. On the eve of her encore performances of her acclaimed ‘Rewind: The Aretha Franklin Songbook’ tour, it was my great pleasure to speak with the fabulously gracious and exceptionally talented, Christine Anu.

The Rewind Tour has been a huge success over the past year which has prompted the Encore Performances in 2014, do you remember when you first heard Aretha Franklin and how did that influence your career as an artist? The Queen of Soul and soul music was what I was brought up with as a kid. I remember soul music songs like RESPECT were constantly played on the radio station that my parents listened to and for me it was the power of her voice and Aretha’s incredible range and ability to emote that I found so amazing. I wanted to be able to sing like that but it took me much longer to find my voice.

magmedia.com.au

8

Later on I was introduced to Paul Kelly and Neil Murray. From then the music I was making was not the music I naturally grew up with, so it feels like I’ve gone full circle to come to singing the songs that my heart really liked. I feel like I’m marrying up the memories of the music in my family home growing up on this tour.

It seems like you haven’t stopped working over the past two decades in just about all mediums of entertainment, what inspired you at this time in your life to create the Rewind Tour? I was still growing up as a singer, although that sounds weird considering how much I’ve been doing, but I didn’t think I was vocally ready. During rehearsals and getting more acquainted with the Aretha songs, you kind of get frightened at first at the incredible range this woman sings across. To be honest, I had been so busy working on other projects to make way for what I really wanted to do, which was Aretha’s songbook. I wanted to give people a true understanding of my voice and vocal versatility as a singer and as an artist.

You have received rave reviews for Rewind and your interpretation of Aretha Franklin’s songbook. When creating the show, does developing an interpretation of Aretha’s songs mean you put your own style into the musical arrangements or through your interpretation of what the lyrics mean to you? All of that, I don’t change the key that Aretha’s songs were sung in because I want the audience to have immediate recognition when they hear a song, but I do put myself and my interpretation into the songs as well. When I listen to these songs and close my eyes and allow myself to feel the emotion that is coming from the lyrics, it all just happens and works. I’m pretty much sticking to the Aretha format of how she recorded them; after all, you don’t want to muck around with what is perfect.

Do you have a personal highlight in the show? Honestly, the entire show is a highlight, but I do really enjoy the Blues sections of the show, I think due to being a Blues singer I’m really at my most comfortable. It’s when the true expression of Christine comes out.

You’ve achieved great success professionally, but it’s not just what you have done in the spotlight but how you conduct yourself away from it that I think also endears you to the public. You have been a spokesperson for our Indigenous communities and women’s issues, as well as sharing issues with weight fluctuations. Is it important to you to remain real and relatable, even if that means opening your life up publicly? Opening up my life publicly was never something that I wanted to do but was something that, begrudgingly, I realised that I had to do. When I put on weight I ran away from the public eye, not because I was having battles with my weight but the public perception of me wasn’t marrying up with the reality that I am a human being, I’m a Mum, I’m a person. I didn’t want the image of my weight to be what controlled my life. In the recording industry, we are products, but as far as being real, I cannot be any other person than who I am. If that makes me relatable I’m not trying to do that on purpose but hoping that just being a human being is what inspires others. I am a humble person from humble beginnings and I never want to forget that. After working as long and hard as I have, I hope I have at least achieved enough of a public profile to give a voice to the things that have meaning to me and my family. celebrations – with the Docklands Dragon! The team at Eureka Skydeck, who commissioned the Docklands Dragon, hope 2014 – the Year of the Horse – will kick start a longer-term growth strategy for Chinese New Year celebrations in the city. According to John Forman of Eureka Skydeck, this is part of a five year plan to strengthen Chinese New Year celebrations across Melbourne and Victoria.

Docklands will come alive in a blaze of colour for two weeks in celebration of Chinese New Year. A spectacular 100 metre-long illuminated Chinese dragon – the Docklands Dragon – will take residence at Victoria Harbour until February 16, during this time visitors can enjoy nightly entertainment between 6:30pm and 7:30pm including traditional Chinese music, dance and street theatre as well as merchant stalls at Southbank and Docklands open from 6pm to 10pm. The custom built Docklands Dragon, over 100 metres long and standing 10 metres high at the head was handmade by renowned Chinese designers Sichuan Tianyu, the company behind the amazing Rotterdam Light Festival in the Netherlands, the most extensive Chinese light show in Europe.

“Melbourne has over 55,000 Chinese residents and there were more than 327,000 visitors to Victoria from China in the last year,” said Forman. “New Year is the biggest festival on the Chinese calendar and something that Melbourne celebrates within our Chinese precinct – we want to see the celebrations linked with Chinatown, through to Southbank and connect with the Docklands”. A $5 Melbourne Water Taxi shuttle service will run from Southbank for visitors who fancy taking the waterfront route to see the Docklands Dragon. TODD McKENNEY

Stand Centre Stage

with Todd McKenney By Lisa Quittner When I first was offered an opportunity to interview Todd McKenney a few years ago during one of his many theatre shows, I was a little apprehensive expecting a big personality with an equally big ego. What I did discover instead was an authentic person, an incredibly hardworking, charitable person, a father and a man that is abundantly generous of spirit, filled to the brim with charm, humour and a talented performer that didn’t need to inflate his sense of self worth. Todd McKenney is an entertainer, as they call them in theatre lingo, ‘a triple threat’ – the guy can sing, he can act and he can most definitely dance and perform, but more than that, Todd McKenney is a nice guy. magmedia.com.au

12

In fear of sounding like an infomercial, but you too can now have the opportunity to find this out for yourself, although there won’t be any value added knife sets thrown in!

Todd and his business partners have created Centre Stage Tours, after huge success in Sydney, these tours are now currently available in Melbourne for theatre aficionados that have always wanted the opportunity to not just talk ‘theatre’ with those actually in the theatre, but to stand by them centre stage, after enjoying a relaxed and exquisite, Chef prepared meal in a private, intimate dinner setting. While performing the part of Teen Angel in the hugely

successful Melbourne season of Grease the Musical, and if you are quick enough to book the last available dates, Centre Stage Tours are now available to Melburnians to enjoy an intimate evening with Todd to dine or enjoy high tea with a matinee session, discuss theatre, and delight in a glass or two of Champagne. Take a few snap shots with your host and members of the cast, enjoy A Reserve seating at the show equipped with a merchandise bag and refreshments during interval and then, the opportunity that so few ever get to experience…. the chance to not just see what happens back stage but how it looks and feels to stand front and centre stage, just like the real theatre professionals. “Behind the scenes there can be 40 people changing costumes and wigs within 45 seconds between scenes, these Centre Stage Tours were created and designed to allow access to the true picture of life in the theatre, not just onstage, but backstage as well. The backstage choreography is just as important as what’s happening on stage, it’s all part of the show and it’s really quite fascinating what actually happens during a theatre

production and the mechanics that bring it to life”, said Todd. While the tours have blitzed Sydney and are now selling out in Melbourne in rapid speed before they have even begun, the big plan is to take Centre Stage Tours to the world’s theatre capitals with Todd guiding tours of a choice of either Broadway and Las Vegas, or London’s West End and Paris’ Lido and Moulin Rouge. Wherever and whatever, this is Theatre Appreciation Class 101 at its definitive best! In the meantime, if sticking on home soil is more your speed and discovering why Todd McKenney became a household name since taking on the role of iconic Aussie performer Peter Allen in the original 1998 Production of the Boy from Oz then get excited, as he reprises that role with a bit of a twist, as The Boy from Oz is BACK, but this time in his own show. Todd will perform the songs of Peter Allen in a high energy, vibrant and entertaining night that showcase Todd’s incredible talents. Chances are you’ll laugh, you might cry but you’ll certainly be entertained by one of the nation’s best loved performers, a multi-talented star that first slipped on his dancing shows at the tender age of three. This show is not just about Peter Allen’s unforgettable hits, Todd will also include songs from some of his earlier musical theatre performances and you’ll hear stories and anecdotes of Peter, as well as get all the ‘goss’ from Dancing with the Stars. As the fun-loving and seasoned professional he is, if you’ve got a question, you can even call it out and chances are Todd will answer you back! But here’s a warning, as Todd can give as well as he gets! My Melbourne Kiyomi Vella made her official musical entrance on television’s The Voice with her unique voice and quirky style. gigs I’m doing now. It’s so much fun and I absolutely love doing music for a living. What are your top 3 spots in the city to hang out at in your free time?

By Lisa Quittner With her Maltese and Japanese cultural background, Kiyomi oozes talent, her own individual fashion flair and a bright and successful future - Kiyomi epitomises all that is Melbourne. How has life changed for you since making to the Top 8 as part of Joel Madden’s team on The Voice in 2013? magmedia.com.au

Melbourne city has a really amazing vibe. Brunswick Street is definitely one of my favourite spots there are so many vintage stores where you can find one of a kind treasures, cute cafes with great coffee and cakes! One of my favourite places to eat on Brunswick Street is the Vegie Bar, it’s a very popular place to grab a healthy, wholesome and delicious vegetarian meal. I promise, you don’t miss the lack of meat as all the dishes are so good! I am an animal lover, so I love to go to the Melbourne Zoo on a nice day, the animals are so fascinating and the gardens are beautiful. I love watching the meerkats and elephants. When I have time off in summer I also love to chill out at the beach, have a lazy day down at Torquay, eat fish and chips with friends and enjoy the sun. I believe you are an Ambassador for Pink Hope, can you explain more about it and your role? I’m proud to be an Ambassador for Pink Hope, the charity promotes being proactive in ovarian and breast cancer health and supporting women with ovarian and breast cancer in many different ways. Bright Pink Lipstick Day is one of the fundraisers they have each year that is promoted through

social media. Everyone can post photos of themselves with a pink lipstick pout with the #brightpinklipstickday hashtag. I really like how the charity gets the younger generation involved in spreading awareness for the cause, in a fun way. As Melburnians we pride ourselves on our Arts and cultural identity, but are we supportive of our home-grown talent, in your opinion can artists pave a successful career in Melbourne? Artists definitely have the ability to be successful through hard work and the joy of music to drive them. I did a few music things in school, like choir and singing ensembles which gave me a taste for music and sparked a big interest in music within me. Starting to write songs at home, trying new things and using new sounds was all a part of the fun. There are so many quirky cafes and bars and around Melbourne that really embrace live music and the buskers around Melbourne are a real part of the city’s artistic atmosphere. Getting yourself out there, persisting and enjoying yourself are a big part of succeeding. What does 2014 have in store for you? I’m currently working on my next musical adventure. Fun pop music with a little bit of quirk is the direction and I’m super excited about it. I’m writing and recording new music at the moment and I can’t wait to get it out there! Why A Review Of The National Curriculum Is A Good Idea By Tom Elliott Recently I read that the ‘chief’ of the University of Western Sydney felt confident that higher level HSC maths wasn’t a necessary precursor to secondary students wanting to study engineering at a tertiary level. According to this person, students who for whatever reason had avoided secondary school mathematics could receive remedial tuition at the tertiary level which would enable them to become fully fledged engineers. Call me old fashioned, but when I attended university between 1986 and 1992, engineering was one of those subjects for which, like medicine, a strong knowledge of maths was an unavoidable prerequisite. Would any of us, for example, enjoy crossing a bridge or ascending a building the engineer of which wasn’t especially competent with his or her sums? I thought not. Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne has called for a review of the National Curriculum to ensure that all Australian students receive a secondary education capable of dealing with the challenges of 21st century existence. And not a moment too soon. At present, high school students around the country must interpret all of their subjects through the three overarching prisms of sustainability, indigenous affairs and engagement with Asia. And while, taken in isolation, these prisms represent worthy fields of endeavour, when applied to ‘hard’ subjects like mathematics, they’re bound to fail. As someone who spent hundreds of hours in secondary school devoted to the study of trigonometry, quadratic equations and (going back a bit) rote learning of the times table, I can understand why

well-meaning politicians might like to jazz things up a bit for potentially bored students. After all, the mere idea that the once iron laws of mathematics could be regarded as fluid when viewed through the environmental, indigenous or Asian prisms conceived by the previous government might just attract a few more disaffected teenagers to the hard sciences’ cause. But the possibility that subjects like maths can alter when confronted by trendy ideologies of the day makes me wonder whether the buildings, bridges and airplanes of the future will prove safe for our continued use. Hard sciences like mathematics are described as such for two reasons: first, because unlike, say, economics, their basic laws are not subject to change by the varied whims of the present day; and, second, because to all but the savants among us, at secondary school level (and beyond) they are often quite difficult to master. If teenage students wish to become adult engineers, then they must complete the necessary precursor subjects like higher mathematics before entering university. To assume otherwise, as the University of Western Sydney appears to have done, is both to devalue the degree of engineering offered by that institution, and potentially to endanger the broader public who use the essential machines and structures designed and built by engineers. A lot of diversity in people and businesses and that is what Hybrid is looking for. Diversity. Your business in a nutshell: Hybrid is a Managed Services IT Company meaning that we become the IT department for SME businesses. We also do a lot

Biggest mistake business owners can make: Taking their clients for granted! Biggest strength business owners can leverage: Listen to your peers who have been through what you’re going through and actually take it on board. Most surprising discovery since being located in the CBD: PARKING! There is either not enough or you need a second mortgage just to park for the day. What is your businesses mantra? It might sound lame, but ‘The truth will set you free’

Most important office/business tools: My iPhone and my Servcorp Team! 3 attributes needed for success in business: Trust, Integrity and Quality. Biggest hurdle you’ve overcome: Having to let a client go because our values (Trust, Integrity and Quality) didn’t match. Defining moment: Winning my first Managed Services Contract! 5 Year Goal: I don’t have high expectations. There is a lot of competition and to do what I do with my three values, I just need to take my time. Slow and steady. Words of advice: Don’t rush into a business, do lots of research on the Vic Business Site (business.vic.gov.au) and also use a Lawyer and an Accountant to get you started. Don’t do it yourself. Only Fools Don’t Lease…

Well, not quite but under the right circumstances the heading rings true… My task is to peel back the complexity and highlight the areas you should focus on when deciding whether leasing your vehicle is financially beneficial. When operating a vehicle under a lease arrangement with your employer, it is viewed as a ‘fringe benefit’. What is a fringe benefit? A fringe benefit is a non-cash benefit which is provided to an employee or an associate of the employee (such as a family member) in respect of the employee's employment. Paying Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT)

Calculating FBT Using two vehicle purchase amounts in the table below, FBT is calculated using a fairly simple formula. It used to be that the statutory percentage reduced with the more kilometres travelled, but it is now a flat rate 20%. FBT can be reduced by deducting the operating expenses of the vehicle. Some deductible expenses are:

FBT is payable by employers and is assessed on the value of the fringe benefits provided to the employee. The benefit does not have to be provided directly by the employer in order for FBT to apply. FBT is calculated at the top marginal tax rate of 46.5%.

• Fuel (est: $3,000 p.a) • Servicing (est: $1,200 p.a) • Registration (est: $600 p.a) • Insurance (est: 1,100 p.a) • Parts, and other expenses (est: $400 p.a)

Operation of a novated lease

We now need to turn our attention to the income tax calculation. What benefit can be obtained from leasing a vehicle verses funding from our after tax income?

A novated lease refers to an arrangement whereby all, or part of the lessee’s rights or obligations under the vehicle lease are taken over by an employer. The lessee is usually the employee but could be an associate of the employee, such as a spouse.

Is there a benefit?

"Conferences span the entire business and knowledge sectors, providing a major platform to collaborate, innovate and educate." Ms Bolinger said. "Professor Chubb has provided a major contribution to our country and was appointed a Companion of

the Order of Australia for service to higher education, including research and development policy and to the facilitation of a knowledge-based global economy. At the Melbourne Convention Bureau, we advocate that along with developing knowledge and research, business events are pivotal in terms of driving the economy and tourism sector. The value of business events to the Australian economy will rise to $31 billion by 2020 and will provide a positive flow on effect for small to medium businesses. According to Ms Bolinger, between 2009 to 2013 delegate spend during MCB-secured business events is estimated at $100 million on hotels, $46 million on air travel, $23 million on sightseeing and tours, and $50 million on retail. "The significance of business events to the nation, and the jobs they provide, presents a strong argument for the ongoing investment into the industry." Ms Bolinger concluded. Forester 2.5i-S

When the Forester was released in 1997 it represented a natural progression into the SUV market for the Japanese manufacturer and to this day remains one of the company’s best sellers. One of the main reasons behind the Forester’s success is its honest ability offer capability both on and off-road. The full-time four-wheel-drive Forester leads a league of its own with most competitors only offering part time four-wheel-drive systems (these vehicles are normally front-wheel-drive with all four wheels only engaging when the vehicle detects slippage). In addition to recent styling updates, Subaru has introduced a new safety feature called Eyesight. Eyesight keeps an eye on the road in front of you and can alert the driver and even apply brakes in the event of an impending collision. This is in addition to a reversing camera that is standard across the range. The cabin is cavernous with plenty of leg and headroom up front. The three rear seats are a little cramped for adults, but perfectly sized for kids and baby seats. Cargo room is impressive with fold down seats, an armrest and automatically opening boot to keep the masses pleased. Under the bonnet of the Forester 2.5i-S is a responsive 2.5-litre four-cylinder

naturally aspirated boxer engine. Producing 126kW and 235Nm of torque, the engine is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) (a CVT is basically a smoother type of transmission with one continuous gear). As you would expect from a four-wheeldrive SUV like the Forester, it feels glued to the road through corners. The direct steering and response engine allows the driver to feel connected with the car, meaning the Forester is more than just a practical family-hauler. The Forester range is also available with a smaller 2.0-litre petrol, a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine or a sporty 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. With the range starting at an impressive $30,990, the 2.5i-S tested costs $43,990, while the top-spec ST Premium is $50,490. Offering an SUV to suit all budgets, the Subaru Forester is a wise choice for anybody after style, comfort and practicality – not to mention adequate ability off the beaten track. I had a feeling you might say that…. Well, then, I can promise them a great show.

MATT OKINE – ‘HAPPINESS NOT INCLUDED’ 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival By Lisa Quittner An award-winning comedian, television and film personality and now radio jock, Matt Okine is a face, voice and a name that continues to crop up everywhere. The 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) Best Newcomer, 2013 Edinburgh Comedy Awards Best Newcomer Nominee, 2013 Best Of The Fest winner at the Sydney Comedy Festival, and performer at the invitationonly Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, makes a very popular and welcome return to this year’s MICF. It was fun chatting with Matt and hearing about his upcoming ‘Happiness Not

Included’ run of shows at one of the biggest highlights on the Melbourne events calendar, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. What inspired the new show, ‘Happiness Not Included’? Basically everything that happens in my life from day to day, my surroundings, the people I talk to and anything that has an influence on my life goes into my shows. I always make sure that I talk about the truth and things that have actually happened or happening to me so that I come from an honest perspective, because to me, the most important thing in a stand-up show is honesty.

What type of themes will you cover in ‘Happiness Not Included’? I’ll be covering a lot of what it’s like to be a 28 year old guy that’s a bit hopeless at getting his shit together, especially when things seem to be working out for me at the moment in terms of work and yet I can’t seem to get my shit together enough to go and buy a new pair of kitchen tongs. I think a question I’ll have to ask of the audience is when exactly do you become an adult and when does acting like one actually start? You have taken comedy festivals around the world by storm in the past couple of years, can that be a bit of a doubleedged sword in regards to the more accolades, success and following you get the more the pressure builds? It does, but I also think any artist has that pressure and you can’t shy away from it. Kanye West doesn’t say “gee, I don’t know if I can make another great album” he says “F—k this, my next album is going to be even f—cken bigger and better”, and that’s how I try to look at things. I can’t doubt myself I have to believe that, just as with any career, you just get better at what you do through experience. I’m not scared, I’m really excited. Your talents are pretty wide and varied from stand-up to television and film, do you have a particular passion for one of them? I sometimes get asked this question and I’m never sure how to answer it because I don’t see them as needing to be exclusive from each other. I just like making stuff, whether it’s writing for stage or making music, I enjoy creating. There are people who produce and those that consume and I’m one of those ones that like to produce more than I consume.

Melbourneinternational comedy festival

What should audiences expect from the show? The funniest hour they have ever heard in their life!

You’ll be spending a lot of time in Melbourne during MICF, what do you like to do when you are here? I really, really like going to the bars in and around the city and then going for a late night dinner in Chinatown, it is one of my favourite things to do in Melbourne. You are a seasoned performer around the world now, how does the MICF stack up internationally in your opinion? It’s really awesome, the MICF is genuinely unique, the only festival remotely similar is the Edinburgh Festival. When the opportunity comes around to be part of MICF, I grab it by the balls. MICF is different from other festivals and even with the Edinburgh Festival, the climate and the culture is just different to the Australian kind of way, plus there it’s a very mixed festival, there are a lot of weird, out there acts included whereas Melbourne just focusses on comedy. The MICF is the only place that you can surround yourself in comedy. Rarely as a stand-up do you get to do a gig almost every night for a month, which for a performer is like running a marathon – you need to train for six months leading up to it. How do you keep up the stamina night after night? Well, I’m probably not the greatest person to ask as I love to go out after a show, but I guess I would have to recommend that one conserve energy, drink lots of fluids and eat a lot of Chinese food after a show!

Affirmations: what are they and why do they work? By Dana Atkin - Professional Kinesiology Practitioner Affirmations are by no means a new thing. Affirmations in some form or other have been around for centuries in the form of Affirmations, Mantras and Goals. There can sometimes be a little confusion around the difference between these three elements. Affirmations are defined as “a declaration that something is true” Using an affirmation is a way of telling your body “this is already a fact” and using it repeatedly can begin to shift your beliefs in agreement with the affirmation - a way of affirming to yourself and the world a new pattern of thought.

Mantra’s are defined as “a sacred word or formula repeated as an incantation”. That said, a mantra can be more than one word. Something you repeat to yourself as a reminder to yourself of who you are, what you want to be or how you want to feel. Goals are defined as “the result or achievement toward which effort is directed”. Goals are a great way to get you to take action towards achieving your affirmation or mantra. These three methods are all a way of creating change in your life on both the conscious and subconscious levels. So why do these work so well? Your body and mind take your words as gospel. They do not understand what a turn of phrase is, what lyrics are or

what sarcasm is. Your body can take on what you say very literally. This is partly why affirmations, mantras and goals, when repeated often are so effective.

Many highly successful people swear by looking at and speaking their goal, mantra or affirmation many times per day and accredit this technique to their success. So, find an affirmation, mantra or goal that you like. Write in on a post-it note (or five) and place them in strategic places around the house or your office. When you see it, say it. I also make myself an electronic version of it (take a photo of your post-it note for example) and set it as your desktop image or screen saver for your phone. Again, when you see it, say it to yourself. The more often you repeat it, the more likely it is to reprogram your way of thinking and naturally draw you closer to achieving your desired outcome.

Experience it for yourself Meditation is a game changer, productivity tool and a must for maximising success. More than ever before, mental health has become a growing concern in society and the workplace. magmedia.com.au

There is stress from all sorts of pressures and we build a whole culture around hiding from it, pretending it is not there, and distracting ourselves with goals,

projects and concerns about status. Meditation helps to see things the way they are, not necessarily the way we want (or don’t want) them to be. Profits and meditation are partners in the new business culture. Out of stillness comes inner calm, clarity, focus and the energy to accomplish the tasks ahead. High-octane performance is for those who close their eyes, surrender their thoughts

and practice watching their breath. Even 5 minutes a day (every day) will help! With Mr Meditate, all sessions are practical because the only way to benefit from meditation is to meditate. Some of the hundreds of benefits from meditation include reduced stress; improved focus, concentration and memory; greater self-awareness; and better sleep quality.

Here are three of my (current) favourite ones you might like to try: 1. I deserve success 2. I am passionate, healthy and energetic 3. I am a money magnet Find an affirmation that resonates with you and that reflects a change that you’re trying to create in your life. Make it visible and repeat often. If you’re still not getting results, there may be some hidden belief patterns that aren’t congruent with your affirmation. If this is the case, it’s great to seek help in identifying what that in-congruency might be, as soon as that block is released – you’re likely to see results very quickly.

By Tahlia Mandie – Psychotherapist & Family Counsellor I realised last year that I had a lot of clutter in my life. Not the bits-andbobs kind of clutter or stuff hiding in the spare closet that is colleting dust and not much else, I am talking about life. You may be wondering how life could ever be cluttered? I asked myself this same question, exactly that. And while I thought about it, wondered and contemplated, I realised that building up clutter is actually easier than not. I got to a stage where I felt drained by meeting everyday expectations, routines and demands. I was losing energy and

momentum. The busyness just kept on increasing while I just kept on turning the wheels trying to keep up. And I realised that I was actually trying to keep up with the silliest of things. I was trying to please everyone. I was trying to make other people happy before my family and myself. I was trying to do everything perfectly while not accepting that mistakes happen. I was wasting too much time keeping up with everyone else’s ‘news feed’ while not noticing my own. The clutter was there. And so I began to simplify. One day a week I turn off my phone. No contact. No social media interactions.

3000 wellbeing

I am simplifying No Facebook. No interactions. It is just my family and I. The silence is heavenly. I began to delete people off my Facebook account as I asked myself, “did I really need to see all their latest news, happenings and food pictures from people that are not even my friends?” No, not really. The simpleness is creeping back in, and the clutter is leaving. There is too much time wasted on trying to ‘keep up with the Kardashians’, as they say, and not enough time focusing on what is around you.

3000 WELLBEING

Juggling Babies and Business By Natasa Denman When I had my first child a little bit over 5 years ago, my world changed. I think any first time parents will tell you the same thing. The first thing I noticed was my level of responsibility went through the roof. I was now responsible for keeping a helpless, dependent newborn alive and my focus had to be on this tiny little baby boy. My husband owned a local retail business and I was Natamanaging an optical outlet 3 days a week so having maternity leave gave me some comfort and piece of mind. I started back at work after my maternity leave; the business was giving my husband the flexibility to be around us as much as possible. Motherhood was fairly simple and I thought we had things in a pretty good balance. Then it all went sour. Due to some bad life decisions my husband lost our business. The one thing that I believed was my security was taken from me and all of a sudden my part time management job didn’t seem enough. This is when the real juggling act began and where I needed to develop skills

in time management and baby wrangling I never knew existed. I decided to enroll in a Diploma of Life Coaching. This was an 24 month course of intense study and self education which I now had to find time for as well as my work supporting the family, mother and household duties as well as being the emotional support for my husband. My son was 18 months old and I still wanted us (me and my husband) to be his number one influence and not have him raised by childcare. He did 2 days a week, more for the social interaction and these were the days where I devoted every minute to my studies and new life coaching business. It took me some time to get into a routine yet this is what enabled me to keep all of the balls up in the air. Babies, toddlers and children all love routine and by me implementing one for all of us, things started to flow. One of the first things I did was to remove television from my life. It was a time waster and once I realised that I could use my time so much better, I discovered that in fact I had more time.

I also had to teach myself to set boundaries about my work hours. To be totally present with your kids and to make it quality time, you need to have your focus on them, not on your phone or computer. That can wait until after they are asleep so they understand that they are the most important things in your life. Between the ages of 4 and 7 is your child’s ‘imprint’ period and it is so critical for him to be imprinted with great beliefs about being loved, special etc. What will his beliefs be around money and your own business? The best advice I can give people who own their own business who have kids is to get as much work done as you can in their nap times and after they go to bed. If you reduce your TV time and replace that with working on your business you will be able to continue to be present for your children yet focused on growing your business so that you do have the lifestyle of your dreams. And most of all learn to make decisions. Make lots of them and make them quickly based on your ‘gut’ feelings. Do make sure you are not in a heightened emotional state when you are making them as the best decisions are made in a calm, neutral state. By making decisions, you will eliminate one of the biggest time wasters, procrastination! You will find yourself with more hours in your week if you just learn to make fast, smart decisions.

Book Review by Rebecca Howden 'The Goldfinch’ by Donna Tartt

Isn’t it wonderful our ancestors where so thoughtful and left a substantial amount of land for us to enjoy around our cities. I live near Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Garden and spend most days there, meandering through the various pathways enjoying an oasis in the middle of city chaos. Our lives are busy and filled up to the brim. So why not share the beauty of nature. Feel grass under your feet, smell fresh flowers, watch the ducks play and sit under swaying trees. If visiting with the family, I highly recommend The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden. There are so many places to explore, with shady areas and more. On a summer’s day enjoy the Meeting Place (which has a water

feature that sprays up out of the ground), the Bamboo Forest or run along The Rill (a gentle waterway that runs through the Garden). There are two café’s to choose from and a wonderful shop where you can pick up some beautiful tokens of your visit or buy gifts for loved ones. And don’t forget to take photos – there are great views from all sides and worth capturing for your wall art. If you wish to make a meaningful gift, consider donating to the Gardens to help support their conservation and development for the benefit of current and future generations. A gift that keeps on giving – so meaningful!

Having authored a debut novel as captivating as The Secret History must be something of a curse for Donna Tartt. The alluring American writer’s first novel, a tense and simmering exploration of secrets, intimacy and death among an elite group of Classics students at a New England college, set literary pulses aquiver when it was published in 1992, gaining an instant and ever-swelling cult following. Then there was a decade-long wait for her next book, the less memorable The Little Friend, and another eleven years for the third, The Goldfinch. This lyrical and ambitious novel – at almost 800 pages, it’s not exactly light tram-reading – takes the classic form of the bildungsroman, or comingof-age story, following the trajectory of Theo Decker. We meet Theo on the cusp of adolescence, on a day that changes the course of his life irrevocably: a bomb explodes in a New York art gallery where he and his mother are visiting a Dutch Masters exhibition. He survives; she doesn’t.

exist – becomes a recurring symbol throughout the novel, an object of obsession tied permanently to his loss. And it comes to cause Theo some very sticky problems over the next 14 years, drawing him into a black world of drugs, fakery and bribery. The novel moves from New York to the barren plains of Las Vegas and back again, and Theo’s life becomes intertwined with a cast of colourful characters. There’s a wizardly antiques dealer who takes him under his wing, a luminous redheaded girl who remains the object of Theo’s unrequited love, and an untrustworthy father with a dangerous side. But the relationship that holds the book together is Theo’s friendship with Boris, a rascally Russian boy he meets on his first day of school in the desert. Cynical and wild, Boris becomes Theo’s sole companion and confidante, providing an anchor in a bleak and wanton world. Though they spend most of their adolescence together exploring the limits of various substances, there are many scenes that reveal a very real closeness, rendered with a perfect mix of humour and sadness. Lovers of The Secret History are unlikely to find The Goldfinch on par with the earlier novel’s brilliance, but it is affecting in its own, quieter, way. Though it does feel somewhat drawn out at times, it’s a compelling and beautifully written novel that begs for each line to be savoured. 3000’s MOVIE REVIEW

Dallas Buyers Club By Simon Bailey Inspired by true events, Dallas Buyers Club tells the story of one man’s odyssey during the AIDS pandemic of the 1980s. French-Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée has carefully crafted an edgy, confronting, intelligent and honest drama that is well deserving of the universal critical acclaim and accolades it has received.

In a gritty opening scene we meet Texan electrician, Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), a homophobic and recklessly hedonistic rodeo enthusiast. Woodroof is diagnosed with HIV in 1985 and told by doctors that he would not live for more than 30 days. Rather than take his prognosis lying down, Woodroof employs cunning tenacity, wit and brilliant resourcefulness to smuggle non-FDA approved HIV treatments into America. Alongside business partner Rayon (Jared Leto), whom he meets in hospital, Woodroof sets up a ‘buyers club’ – where people living with HIV pay a membership fee that gets them access to Woodroof’s unauthorised treatments. The plot follows Woodroof to Mexico, Japan and the Middle East to source the treatments he hopes will keep both his buyers club and its members alive.

In David and Goliath style, the medical establishment tries to hamper the unlikely Bonnie and Clyde pair’s enterprise every step of the way. After a brilliant turn in Mud, Matthew McConaughey continues to break out of his typecast rom-com niche with another complex and varied role. McConaughey’s performance is jarring, blackly humorous and expertly nuanced. McConaughey immersed himself in the life of Woodroof by studying audio recordings, diaries, scrapbooks and meeting with the real Ron’s family. It is no surprise McConaughey is up for Best Actor at the Academy Awards, one of the six pending nominations the film holds. Leto’s performance as Rayon, a troubled yet poised transgender woman living with HIV, is stunning. It’s been around five years since Leto’s last feature film, as the Thirty Seconds to Mars lead singer has been focusing on his music. Leto’s return to the silver screen for Dallas Buyers Club is charismatic, alluring, mesmerising and in a brilliant sort of way also gracefully understated. Leto’s is the kind of performance that can humble an audience, and perhaps evoke a daydream about what it must be like to have the gift of moving others.

It is a glistening and magical moment when an actor plunges, in Leto’s case wig first, over the precipice of being the celebrity one reads about from time to time and into complete and utter possession of a character. Director Vallée has stated that he never met the actor Jared Leto; he only met Rayon. Leto’s physical transformation for the role was astonishing – dropping around 13 and a half kilos in a three week period – similar to his weight loss for Requiem for a Dream around 14 years ago. Leto has said that playing Rayon taught him about levity, and one can feel he has treated this role with a lot of respect. The actor has already collected a cabinet-full of awards for Dallas Buyers Club, and is up for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. Dallas Buyers Club could have been smothered with schmaltz, however, the film takes on a pragmatic edge in lieu of bogging itself down in excessive sentimentality. Its emotional depth and power, which is significant, is transmitted through the actors’ craft and a determined script. The relationship arc between Rayon and Woodroof is moving in itself, beginning as sparring patients on the same hospital ward, becoming business partners, to ultimately

ending up as friends who care deeply for each other.

Jennifer Garner is also grounded and warm as Dr. Eve Saks, immunologist and friend of Woodroof and Rayon who is torn between the medical establishment she is a part of and compassion to her patients. Without moving into documentary territory, or attempting to conveniently summate complex themes just for the sake of it, the film serves up a slice of the wider AIDS pandemic, drug use, and sexual diversity in the 1980s. This is achieved through presenting the stories of complex and nuanced individuals characters who do not purport to be the representatives of all people living with HIV, all people who use drugs, or anyone who does not identify as straight. In the month prior to the real life Roy Woodroof’s death, screenwriter Craig Borten travelled to Dallas to begin interviews with the man himself. This sparked the beginning of work that would ultimately take two decades to see the light of day as a feature film. The result is an utterly compelling drama brought to life by a stellar cast, which tells a powerful story without turning it into a circus. Release Date: 13 February 2014
