EDITOR'S LETTER

Melbourne’s East End Theatre District has certainly been Australia’s home of musical theatre in recent weeks. For the first time in five years, Melbourne itself was a full house hosting a major musical theatre production in every heritage theatre in the city. Les Misérables, which opened to much fanfare at Her Majesty’s Theatre; Craig McLachlan and his motley crew of misfits in The Rocky Horror Show at the Comedy Theatre; the spellbinding Wicked packing out the Regent Theatre; and Rodgers and

I had the wonderful opportunity to witness the stage spectacular that is Les Misérables. It was my first time seeing this amazing musical and it certainly did not disappoint. It was simply mesmerizing from start to finish. Get along to see it, if you can.

And if that’s not enough to keep you busy perhaps, like me, you can head out of town for a day trip to enjoy the best snow conditions the Victorian Alps have had for the past 30 years.

If you’re looking for something else to warm up your winter nights, then head over to the Queen Victoria Market. This month marks the return of the Luna 1878 Night Market. There is something for all foodies, artists and collectors among the stalls.

Have a great August.

Alice McCall is busy. She’s putting the finishing touches on her collection for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) at the end of the month. This year is sentimental for McCall. It marks the 10th anniversary of her fashion label’s runway debut. She’s also working on the collection that will drop in November all the while planning a celebration to mark her 40th birthday at the end of the year. “It’s really wonderful to reach the 10-year milestone. Plus I am turning 40 so it’s a really exciting year for me,” she said.

The Alice McCall label continues to attract legions of devotees with its delightful dresses, and eclectic pieces. “There is no typical Alice McCall girl. We have got this really large demographic. I think for me I am quite the chameleon and eclectic so I change my style when I am in a different mood. There is something for everyone. It’s not diluted and has a strong DNA and cohesive branding.”

“I draw my inspiration from everywhere and anywhere. I have just returned from the LA markets where there are many vintage finds. I like vintage postcards and graphic elements and silhouettes. Really, I design based on what I want to wear at the moment.” So as the weather heats up, McCall will be dressing Melburnians in fun playsuits, sports basics and flirty dresses.

For the first look at McCall’s collection be sure to attend the MSFW designer runway series. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle launched the 20th

MSFW program last month. The city will host more than 100 events, 70 per cent of which are free, as part of the festival.

The Spring Summer ’15 collection, Flower Drum“ is quite bohemian and summery” with a bit of ‘70s inspired denim and sports luxe thrown in for good measure.

“MSFW is an event that is truly Melbourne and one that has gone from strength to strength over the last 20 years,” Cr Doyle said. “More than 75 per cent of our designers, talent and production teams are based here in Melbourne and as always, 100 per cent of what you see on the runway you can buy in store.” Highlights of the MSFW program include the runway events at Melbourne Town Hall with new season collections from the best local and national designers. Over four nights, the runway events will form an artistic fusion of fashion and entertainment, covering everything from couture gowns to Ready-to-Wear street style from designers Gwendolynne, Aurelio Costarella, Carla Zampatti, Dom Bagnato, JASONGRECH, Nicolangela, Manning Cartell, Willow, YB J’AIME, Arthur Galan AG, Calibre, Jayson Brunsdon, Nicola Finetti and Yeojin Bae in an evening of highly artistic pieces.

LUNA NIGHT MARKET

IS FIT FOR A QUEEN

CRACKLING FIRES, MULLED WINE AND WARMING STREET FOOD WILL HELP WARD OFF THE CHILL THIS MONTH. Pay a visit to the Luna Night Market at Queen Victoria Market to enjoy a celebration of winter every Wednesday night until 27 August. This year’s market features a carefully curated selection of Melbourne’s most talented designers, artisans and gourmet food vendors to stage the mid-week winter event within the historic sheds of the market. Plus there is an eclectic line up of multimedia installations, graffiti works, world champion foodies and world-class performances. Queen Victoria Market chief executive officer, Jan Cochrane-Harry said the night market, in its third year, was becoming a mid-winter ritual. “This year’s program has been stepped up by sourcing the city’s best and most diverse food and cultural experiences. We’re anticipating the market to be buzzing after dark on Wednesday nights,” Ms Cochran-Harry said. More than 20 vendors will provide warming street food such as Jamabalaya, Nepalese, Pilipino-style slow-roasted pigs on bamboo spits and Argentinian sizzling barbecue to dumplings, steaming hot soups, mulled wine, hot cider and hot chocolate and churros for a sweet finish.

Melbourne foodies will be able to put vendors such as Hammer & Tong and world-renowned pizza maker from 400 Gradi’s Johnny Di Francesco, who won the Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza Championship in Parma, Italy in April, on their dinner list.

The Luna Night Market also features cosy lounges, games corners and a roll-call of musicians, roving street performers and artisan entertainment. Merging mapped video projection, geometric forms and synchronised sound, Enigmatica will create a mesmerising synesthetic environment in the market’s sheds. Other highlight events at Luna include the Lord Mayor’s ‘Legacy Wall’, a graffiti dedication by Melbourne street artists along with a secret program of performances unveiled each week. Once again Luna will offer a curated selection of craftspeople, designers, artistans and providores during the eight-week season together with the ‘String Bean Alley’ shipping container precinct especially opening after dark. Visitors will be able to browse homewares crafted from ‘up-cycled’ bike parts by Tread & Peddles, pick up an original artwork from Misprint, handcrafted jewellery by Neon Pear or see the locally-made make-up range by Montana Bliss, while checking out String Bean Alley regular stall holders who feature locally-made or specially-curated wares. As a more intimate ‘little sister’ to the Queen Victoria Market’s award winning Summer Night Market season that attracts crowds in excess of 30,000 per evening, this weekly event is set to become a creative winter tradition.

DAZZLING NEW STAGE SHOW HAS THE PEOPLE SINGING BY CHELSEA ARNOLD The acclaimed new production of Boubil and Schönber’s legendary musical Les Misérables, directed by Cameron Mackintosh, is winning over Melbourne audiences with glorious staging, dazzling scenery, a star-studded cast and emotion-charged vocals. Les Misérables is the epitome of tragedy and romance, balancing narrative threads that encompass deprivation and abuse, unrequited love, false imprisonment, fiercely loyal friendship, self-sacrifice and class struggle. Audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre are left breathless and in awe of the incredible chorus numbers and emotive story-telling of Les Misérables, set in early 19th Century France during the revolutionary upheaval of the Paris uprising. Playing the iconic role of Jean Valjean, a French peasant who seeks redemption after years of imprisonment, is established actor and musical theatre star Simon Gleeson.

magmedia.com.au

10

“I’m so thrilled to be playing Valjean in the new Australian production of Les Misérables,” Gleeson said. “With arguably the most breathtaking score in musical theatre history, Les Misérables transformed musical theatre when it first opened. The show remains iconic and relevant today because it deals with themes of love, courage, the human spirit and the difficult choices we make which define who we are and what we stand for.” Valjean jumps parole and is pursued relentlessly by a police officer, Javert

played by NIDA-trained Hayden Tee, who has appeared in many musical theatre and opera productions around the world. Patrice Tipoki, who has had lead roles in The Lion King and Wicked, stars as the dying Fantine. Her rendition of I dreamed a dream is moving. There is also the young Cosette (Emily Langridge) with her ethereal Castle on a Cloud; and Kerrie Anne Greenland as the jilted Eponine, whose On My Own is spine-tingling, as well as Euan Doidge’s portrayal of the attractive, ultimately haunted Marius, led to disaster by Chris Durling’s romantic idealism as the chief rebel.

FACT FACTS • LES MISÉRABLES HAS PLAYED IN 42 COUNTRIES AND 322 CITIES. • IT HAS BEEN TRANSLATED INTO 22 LANGUAGES. • THE PRODUCTION HAS PLAYED MORE THAN 48,000 PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCES WORLDWIDE GIVING A TOTAL AUDIENCE FIGURE OF MORE THAN 65 MILLION PEOPLE. • EACH PERFORMANCE REQUIRES 392 COMPLETE COSTUMES COMPRISING 1782 ITEMS OF CLOTHING AND 31 WIGS.

Quite possibly two of the biggest stars of the show are Lara Mulcahy and Trevor Ashley playing Madame and Monsieur Thenardier. Their larger-than-life characters almost steal the show. Twenty-four of Australia’s finest talents join the ensemble. Les Misérables is the world’s longestrunning and most popular musical of all time. The score includes the classic songs: I dreamed a dream, On my own, Bring him home, Do you hear the people sing?, Master of the house, and One day more. Les Misérables the musical is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. WHERE: Her Majesty’s Theatre WHEN: Until 16 November COST: $45-$150. TICKETS: www.ticketek.com.au

TOUR IS NOT JUST A MYTH The dynamic duo known the world-over for debunking long-held myths are bringing their scientific approach to live experiments to Melbourne. The all-new live show MythBusters: Behind the Myths, starring Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, cohosts of the Emmy-nominated series MythBusters, will tour Australia for the first time, kicking off in Melbourne this month. MythBusters: Behind the Myths, presents on-stage experiments, audience participation, rocking video and behind-the-scenes stories. With this show, for the first time, fans join Hyneman and Savage on stage

and assist in their mind-blowing and mind-twisting approach to science.

“We have been shooting this show for 10 years. There is not a lot of time to get out and about during that time,” Hyneman said. "We have invaded your TV for a decade and now we are invading your town. We are going to be there live and on stage and expecting some audience participation. So you better be ready." Savage said they were looking forward to meeting their Australian fans.

“We are expecting tonnes of audience participation which will be great for us because we don’t get a lot of interactions with our fans on a normal day-to-day basis,” Savage said. “We are experimenting on a grand scale.” MythBusters: Behind the Myths brings you face-to-face with the duo who match wits on stage with each other and members of the audience.

BRIDGE HONOURS A

MELBOURNE GREAT The newest pedestrian bridge along the Yarra River, named in honour of one of Melbourne’s late great footballers, has opened.

The innovative 120-metre pedestrian bridge cost $15 million, and creates the illusion it is hovering unsupported above the Yarra.

a journey … a passage to overcome obstacles”. “If I heard Jim say ‘journey’ once, I heard it a million times. He was all about personal journey.”

The Jim Stynes Bridge was officially opened for use by Planning Minister Matthew Guy and Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, who were joined by Stynes’ wife Samantha and children Matisse and Tiernan.

It joins for the first time a forlorn section of the Yarra River, behind the old Mission to Seafarers on Flinders Street, to Docklands.

Ms Stynes said she and her family would view the bridge ‘‘as a connection to the man we miss and love, and a memory of the journeys we took with him, the journeys he pushed us to take individually, or to contemplate those journeys that are yet to begin.”

Sam Stynes said the bridge “is a literal and visual representation of

EYE ON CRIME NINE cctv cameras installed at six CBD locations are helping deter thugs and catch others in the act. Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the revolving cameras could “recognise” a face from several hundred metres. “CCTV makes the city safer; CCTV saves lives; CCTV prevents crime.

No doubt about any of that,” Cr Doyle said. “About two months ago our cameras recorded someone being chased by an assailant with a knife.

"Jim Stynes represented the quintessential Melbourne story: a migrant made good. The story of his settling in Melbourne, his outstanding AFL career, his philanthropy and charity work, and his brave fight against cancer touched us all.” Cr Doyle said. A bronze plaque at each end of the bridge, designed by engineers Aurecon and Cox Architecture, tells the life story on Stynes who died in 2012.

“Within two minutes police had made an arrest preventing, I think, a very serious injury, even death.” Cr Doyle said the cameras were one of the city’s best crime-fighting tools.

Cr Doyle said the Jim Stynes Bridge would remind people of the contribution the 2010 Melburnian of the Year had made to Melbourne.

Commuters are being encouraged to ditch the escalators and take the stairs at Southern Cross Station. The Bourke Street stairs have been transformed into a scenic garden. ‘Put a spring in your step’ is part of the 100 Ways to Move it Melbourne campaign. Health Minister David Davis said the initiative was delivered through the State Government’s $1.2 million contribution to Healthy Together - Active Cities Melbourne. "Through this partnership between the Victorian Government, the City of Melbourne and VicHealth and now joining

with the Heart Foundation Victoria to deliver this initiative, we are continuing to strengthen this work to help get city workers active and healthy,” Mr Davis said. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the public art would encourage people to put a spring in their step. “We know that the most effective way to positively change behaviour is to make the transition easy and enjoyable,” Cr Doyle said. “Some people struggle to find time to get to the gym or go for a run or walk, so one of the most effective ways we can look after ourselves is to change our routines to incorporate more incidental exercise."

BLOCK ARCADE

FAREWELLS A FRIEND BY BOB VAN DER TOORREN On the evening of Wednesday July 16, at the historic Block Arcade on Collins Street a Farewell Dinner Function was staged as a thank you to Don Parsons, the departing Centre Manager of The Block Arcade. My role was as one of half a dozen retailers from The Block who jointly planned and organised this event, as a four-course sit-down dinner staged under The Dome. The aim was for the tenants of The Block to express their appreciation of the stable management that Don Parsons had given this heritage property over the past 20 years. Don first appeared at The Block at the time that John and Alison Kearney purchased the property at a public auction in October 1993. Prior to Don’s arrival, we actually had four centre managers in the previous 12 months, of the arcade being in the hands of the “Mortgagee in Possession”. Attendees, were primarily our retailers plus the key day-to-day cleaning, security and maintenance contractors with a number of outside guests drawn from the Collins Street precinct.

magmedia.com.au

14

The total attending was four dozen, four of these were truly VIP types, including Alister Haigh and Stuart Chandler of Haighs Chocolates who came specially from Adelaide for the dinner plus the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley.

The food and refreshments for the night were sourced and served by Du Omo Café, Hopetoun Tea Rooms and the Charles Dicken Tavern, a reviewer would have scored this a “perfect 10”. I was MC and Cr Doyle kicked off the speeches by speaking warmly about Don’s obvious love of The Block, the Collins Street precinct and all things Melbourne. Don responded with a few humorous remarks about the rumoured ghosts of The Block and his belief that centre management was really a function of partnership between the tenants and the landlord. Don explained the three “P” approach to his duties - Partnership with Professionals and that this had been a Pleasure for him at The Block. Cr Riley then spoke in an even lighter style and presented Don with a gift of a City of Melbourne silver picture frame, complete with the Coat of Arms of the City. At least another six warm speeches were presented between the food courses, these included the presentation to Don of a Collins Street Coffee Table book complete with signatures and messages inside from all guests. Don took the opportunity to reply further and noted that The Block maintenance man, know affectionately as Noddy, was a loyal Richmond supporter, he presented Noddy with a framed caricature of long-time Richmond footballer Tommy Hafey. The event wound up around 9.30pm with a lot of hugs and hand shakes, it wasn’t really a “last supper” it was a dinner for Don with good friends.

CITY’S CEO TOWER CALLS IT A DAY FIRST IN SKY-HIGH

BOLTE PRECINCT

The Docklands skyline will acquire a $100 million, 100-metre-high apartment building, the first tower in the prime riverside Bolte Precinct. Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the development will enhance Docklands, connecting the city’s iconic river with the central business district. The building is part of the ongoing Yarra’s Edge development, the 30-level tower at 160-186 Lorimer Street and is designed to 4-star Green Star standards. The development includes 229 apartments (ranging from one-bedroom to family size apartments), 302 car parks, 84 bicycle spaces, and ground floor retail premises. “Our projections show Melbourne's expanded central city is likely to become home to an additional 100,000 people by 2031. Around 60,000 new dwellings will be required to accommodate this growth, so it’s important that we direct higher density to areas like Docklands while ensuring new developments cater for singles, couples and families,” Mr Guy said.

Upon completion Docklands is expected to have attracted in excess of $17.5 billion in private investment and be home to an estimated 20,000 residents, 60,000 workers and millions of visitors annually. The Lorimer Street development adjoins the Lorimer Precinct of the Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal area and expected to house more than 80,000 residents.

The City of Melbourne is on the hunt for a new CEO after Dr Kathy Alexander last month announced her resignation after six years in the top job.

In announcing her resignation, Dr Alexander said she would pursue new opportunities and spend more time with her family. “I have always felt privileged to work at the City of Melbourne with such an innovative group of staff and three very committed elected councils. “After more than six years on the job, and with the organisation’s financial position strong, I believe now is the time to pass the baton. It is also a good time for me to take a new direction in my life and career, pursue opportunities as a non-executive director and, importantly, spend more time with my family,” she said. “Without a doubt Melbourne is one of the best places in the world to live, work and visit,” she said. “And a good part of that is a result of City of Melbourne’s focus on the public realm and the environmental solutions we have put in place. We are sending a strong message to federal and state governments that Australia’s capital cities can help solve some of our biggest national problems.” Lord Mayor Robert Doyle expressed regret at Dr Alexander’s announcement but said he

supported the reasons for her decision.

“Kathy Alexander has been an outstanding leader at the City of Melbourne and should feel proud of the contribution she has made to the world’s most liveable city. On a personal note, I will miss Kathy’s passion, good humour and even the occasional argument. She’s an exemplary leader and a strong role model for young women aspiring to CEO positions,” he said. Since joining the City of Melbourne in 2008, Dr Alexander has led several major capital works projects, including the Swanston Street redevelopment and the construction of major community infrastructure, including Boyd in Southbank, Carlton Community Centre and the new Docklands Library. She has been instrumental in driving what will be the council’s largest investment in

its history, the renewal of the Queen Victoria Market. Dr Alexander will remain in the role until 3 December while the organisation undertakes a recruitment program. The date marks Dr Alexander’s 60th birthday, a milestone which she believes is a fitting time to move on from managing the world’s most liveable city.

WHY IS THE SHOOTING DOWN OF MH17 A RUSSIAN ISSUE? loyal as possible to Moscow. As a result, areas like Georgia, South Ossetia, Kaliningrad and the Ukraine (now just Ukraine) were encouraged to accept large numbers of ethnic Russian settlers whose first loyalty, it was presumed, would remain with Mother Russia.

The attack on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 is probably best viewed as a tragic mistake within the theatre of civil war. Having said that, it is most likely an error for which Russia bears significant blame. During the Soviet era (1917-1991), the USSR’s Politburo was anxious to ensure that outlying territories remained as

When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early ‘90s, these aforementioned Russians found themselves stranded in newly formed and independent nations with which they had little affinity. For a while the militarily weak Russian successor to the old USSR possessed little leverage over the international orientation of states like Kazakhstan, Belarus and Ukraine. As a result, some of these

new countries began to stray from their former Soviet overlords and look towards new international alliances. In Ukraine’s case, the European Union appeared a more than acceptable substitute. For ethnic Ukrainians it makes sense for their nation to draw closer to the West via the EU. After all, Ukraine and Poland enjoy strong cultural and economic links. For the region’s substantial Russian minority, however, Vladimir Putin’s ‘strong’ leadership to the East looks more attractive. Out of this conundrum were born the proRussian, Moscow-financed militias now accused of shooting down the unfortunate flight MH17. Almost certainly Putin did

TOM ELLIOTT WRITES... not ignore the fatal missile to be fired. Instead it’s more likely that the launch in question was a terrible mistake within the always deadly confines of civil war. Nevertheless it is Russian money, arms and training which allow the Eastern Ukrainian separatists to keep the region’s legitimate government at bay. As a result of this, Vladimir Putin has one of two choices to make: either continue to protest the Russian administration’s neutrality and innocence in the face of this heinous war crime; or cut off support for the rebels which make life so difficult for former Soviet states who, unfortunately, border the re-emerging Russian superpower. Hopefully Mr Putin will realise that acting as a solid global citizen is more important than posturing as a regional warlord. Tune in and listen to Tom between 3-6pm weekdays on 3AW’s Drive.

THE INVESTMENT STRATEGY THAT WINS EVERY TIME BY ANDREW HEWISON A number of clients have asked me lately “should we be in fixed interest? The income return is not what it used to be”. I get excited by this question! If my clients are thinking about this, rest assured many other investors are having the same thoughts. The difference is my clients will be staying put, while the rest of the market will likely take their money and race into the sharemarket chasing growth and yield. This is partly why sharemarkets will eventually become expensive and is otherwise known as the ‘euphoric’ stage of the investment cycle.

We are reaching a point in the market cycle where a number of trends are apparent – a) Interest rates remain low and whilst some investors have remained invested in

fixed interest since the GFC, too nervous to re-enter the sharemarket, sustained low returns are becoming unbearable.

b) Investors are now looking for alternatives and listed companies such as Woodside Petroleum (9.7% gross yield), NAB (8.4% gross yield) and Telstra (7.7% gross yield) appear to be the answer. c) Furthermore, after watching the sharemarket re-bound since the bottom in March 2009, nervous investors are becoming afraid that share prices will take off and leave them behind. I would argue that happened long ago. My answer to clients is simply – “Yes”. Regardless of interest rate cycles, where appropriate, fixed interest should remain a fundamental part of a long-term investment strategy with an income objective. In most cases though, so too should an exposure to

the sharemarket, in order to maintain a diversified strategic asset allocation. On the basis that my clients already have an exposure to Australian shares, a general shift out of fixed interest and into shares will benefit my clients regardless. This then offsets any reduction in their fixed income return due to lower interest rates. This has been the case over the last two years, when interest rates have fallen, but shares have generally advanced. If there happens to be a shortfall in investment earnings compared with the income needs of the individual, investors should not be afraid to supplement the shortfall by realising some share profits. This is classified as a re-balancing strategy, ensuring that the portfolio is re-structured back to the original asset allocation.

If this investment cycle runs like many others before it, eventually we will see interest rates increase and Australian shares plateau or decline from their high (perhaps not yet seen?). The timing of this is not known, hence why shifting from one asset class, such as fixed interest, into another, such as Australian shares, is a risky move. Deviating away from the asset allocation in order to chase better returns (income or growth) elsewhere is known as ‘timing the market’. Typically this approach presents significant risk. If the market does not act in the way the investor has hoped their returns will be diminished. Investment strategies for my clients are a long term proposition. They are designed to achieve a long-term objective. An effective asset allocation combats shortterm issues, such as lower interest rates.

MOTORING REVIEW BY PAUL MARIC VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI Many readers will remember when the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution were the only two choices for hot-hatch lovers. Fastforward five or even 10 years and the market is literally jam-packed full of affordable hot-hatches. Arguably the best of the hot-hatches is Volkswagen’s offering, the Golf GTI. Built on the Volkswagen Golf platform, the GTI aims to impress with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and the option of a six-speed manual or super fast six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Starting from $41,990, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is now more affordable than ever. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 162kW of power and 350Nm of torque. When mated to the dual-clutch automatic, it sprints from 0-100km/h in an incredibly fast 6.5-seconds.

magmedia.com.au

18

The nimble Golf handles and drives as impressively as it looks. Direct steering and sharp throttle response combines with a rigid chassis to deliver out of this world cornering — especially when you consider that power is sent through the front wheels.

The Golf GTI even sounds the part with a raspy exhaust note and cracks during upshifts. Despite the performance ability, the Golf GTI consumes just 6.6L/100km on the combined cycle. Inside the cabin it’s all about comfort and space. Four adults can fit comfortably — with five a squeeze — while the boot is big enough to cart around the week’s shopping and luggage for a weekend away. Those after even more performance can opt for the performance oriented Golf GTI Performance for an additional $6,500. The Golf GTI Performance is slightly quicker to 100km/h, but retains the same drivetrain. The Golf GTI can switch from sedate to sporty at the blink of an eye. If you are in the market for a sporty hot-hatch, look no further, you’ve found it. Paul Maric is a Melbourne based, independent motoring journalist & mechanical engineer. The Vietnam War was the world’s first televised war. More than any other conflict it produced some of the most popular and enduring songs of the 20th Century.

Personal stories of young Vietnam War soldiers and classic songs of the era combine in Rolling Thunder Vietnam - Songs that Defined A Generation. This dynamic theatrical concert draws audiences inside the lives of men on the battlefront and their family and loved ones at home, covering the themes of conscription, combat, protest and homecoming. The evocative and stirring production, set in the Vietnam War era, showcases some of the greatest rock songs ever produced performed by popular Australian singer-actors and musicians.

The show features the music of Steppenwolf, Joe Cocker, Buffalo Springfield, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Gladys Knight, Billy Thorpe, The Rolling Stones and Curtis Mayfield. Rolling Thunder Vietnam brings to the stage a new generation of young musical talent under the musical direction of Chong Lim (Dancing With The Stars, John Farnham Band). Wes Carr, Kimberley Hodgson, Tom Oliver, Matt Pearce, Vanessa Krummenacher and Will Ewing will bring the story to life with their stunning vocals.

With stunning projected images and historic footage, Rolling Thunder Vietnam is a rich and emotional experience written by Bryce Hallett (Freeway – The Chet Baker Journey) and directed by David Berthold (Holding the Man, Cosi). Based on extensive research, actual letters and first-hand interviews with Vietnam War veterans, the stories reveal strained and loving relationships, the danger of combat, the rise of the anti-war protest movement in the late ‘60s and a bittersweet homecoming. “The deeply personal stories have largely sprung from face-to-face interviews with Australian soldiers who lived in this era,” writer Bryce Hallett said. “I wanted the monologues between songs to be truthful and spare. Most of the songs in the show are essentially anti-war protest songs that brilliantly convey the rhythm, spirit and mood of the times. Many are epic in nature and

Musical director Chong Lim said the Vietnam War gave rise to gutsy rock rhythms and emotion-charged guitar riffs that evoked something of the wild energy of the conflict itself. “The era of Woodstock, of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, also produced many sensitive and poignant songs which have become classics because they remain relevant. 3000 WELLBEING

I’ve seen so many clients over the past few weeks with colds. And more often than not, they’ve all had the physical immune system that needed some help as well as the emotional or metaphysical aspect triggering the physical response.

Our immune system is pretty amazing. All of those cells in the body fighting any invasion and defending the body. The immune system ejects bugs, it inflames and it communicates to all the other systems in the body all to ensure that we remain healthy, to ensure that we survive. When our immune system is busy fighting the common cold, we boost the immune system with water, Vitamin C, antioxidants and rest. Which are all great things to do for your physical wellbeing during the cold and flu season but sometimes, we need to look at the emotional component in order to make a significant and lasting change to our immune system. Let’s look at what might be going on emotionally when we become susceptible to these bugs. Much like the immune system, we can get defensive. When situations get inflamed, our body gets inflamed and if they stay that way, then our ability to protect ourselves suffers. This is because we’re too busy using all our energy to defend even when there’s not really anything to defend against. Think about the last time you got really defensive about something. Remember how every little thing someone said to you felt like a threat? That’s what happens with the body on an emotional level. magmedia.com.au

22

It’s defending, defending, defending even when there’s nothing to defend against. So, by the time the cold or

WHAT IS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM BY DANA ATKIN TRYING TO - PROFESSIONAL KINESIOLOGY TELL YOU? PRACTITIONER flu bug comes around, it’s spent all that energy defending so it now has no energy to fight the invasion. Now let's look at the other side of it – sometimes, our immune system, from a metaphysical point of view can be more about protection. We want to protect ourselves, our way of being, our job, our money, our children, our relationships, whatever it may be, that we pour all our energy into protecting these external things instead of our body. So when the cold or flu bug comes along, we’re too busy protecting everything else around us that we have no protection left for ourselves.

Maybe we don’t feel safe and on an energetic level, we’re constantly protecting ourselves from a perceived threat to our survival so that when the bugs get into the body, the immune system has no reserves left to fight it.

Now, where do you currently feel your cold or flu the most? Head – are you all up in your head or over-thinking the situation? Throat – what do you need to say? What are you not saying? Chest – what do you need to get off your chest? Where is the grief?

Combine these with the metaphysical elements of the immune system - defending, protecting and/ or survival - and you’ll have the emotional component of the physical symptoms you’re experiencing which will give your body a better chance at feeling healthier sooner.

TOP FIVE SPORTS INJURIES AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT THEM

BY SUZANA TALEVSKI - Television fitness presenter and instructor High intensity workouts feel great as they fill us with endorphins; help us with cardio fitness and are generally good for us. But they do come with an occasional downside - more injuries than low impact sports. This month we take a look at the top five most common sports injuries that instructors see, and we chat to national trainer and presenter for Les Mills Body Attack, Michael Montgomery.

After surveying a number of Melbourne instructors, these five injuries were most prominent in high intensity group fitness classes and road training: 1. Knee tendonitis 2. Achilles tendonitis 3. Calf strains 4. Shin splits 5. Shoulder strains “High intensity classes require a decent level of co-ordination due to the frequent direction changes of the choreography. This movement pattern can expose the individual to the risk of sprains or twists. This type of injury can be quite serious and requires adequate rest, recovery and rehabilitation,” Montgomery said. “It takes about three to five classes before you start to understand the rhythm of a group fitness class and feel confident in your own movement. The risk however cannot be isolated

to new beginners in classes as those with previous injuries, instability issues or with inadequate footwear can be susceptible to this type of injury.” Montgomery said that if injury occurs it’s vital to stop the activity and seek professional advice. “It’s important to rehabilitate the injury as sprains and twists can range from Grade 1 twists through to serious Grade 3 strains which could have significant ligament damage,” he said. He recommends mixing up your exercise routine. “Attending frequent classes is great for your fitness, however, lack of variety and sheer volume can lead to overuse injuries. Typically these injuries are associated to pain found in the leg, knee and foot. Shin splints, or associated pain in lower leg, are one of the most common complaints contributed to high intensity workouts. “Shin splints relate to the overstraining of the muscles that attach to the shin and

are associated to a number of factors which are mainly biomechanical (abnormal movement patterns) and errors in training. On a technical note poor technique can lead to shin splints as participants will naturally be on the balls of their feet. “Tight calf muscles alter the range of movement that the ankle can move through which places extra stress on the anterior tibial muscle. In aerobic classes this is due to constantly being on the ball of the foot with heel lifted. Over time the shortening of the muscles will cause tightening. Make sure you land on your feet with your heels down.” Montgomery said the risk of injury through high intensity should not be a deterrent to achieving your fitness goals. “In the world of group fitness I encourage participants to speak to instructors to understand movement patterns and seek advice if they are new.”

VISIT THE CAT CAFE Australia’s first cat cafe will throw open its doors to patrons this month, promising plenty of feline fun. A dozen cats have moved into the homely cafe on Queen Street just around the corner from the Queen Victoria Market. Founders Anita and Myles Loughran were inspired to open the cafe after visiting a cat cafe in Japan. “Our passion and love for cats has driven us to opening a cat cafe in Melbourne for all to share this incredible social experience. Our cat cafe offers a calm and relaxing environment where you can let you inner crazy cat person out,” Ms Loughran said.

“We will be offering a small selection of food and beverages that you will be able to take in with you to the cat areas. This means you can sit back with a cat on your lap and enjoy your latte. “We will also have a range of cat merchandise and gifts for both humans and cats. All the cats at Cat Cafe Melbourne are from rescue shelters. “We believe in giving animals from shelters a second chance and our kitties are the purrfect representatives of the loving cats that can be found at shelters. Cat Cafe Melbourne has worked closely with The Lost Dog’s Home, in North Melbourne, and the Geelong Animal Welfare Society, in Geelong. With their help we selected our cuddly kitties and we hope to increase awareness of the benefits of rescue animals.” The first cat cafe opened in Taiwan in 1998. Other feline-friendly venues have followed in parts of Asia and throughout Europe.

‘An old man had a habit of early morning walks on the beach. One day, after a storm, he saw a human figure in the distance moving like a dancer. As he came closer he saw that it was a young woman and she was not dancing but was reaching down to the sand, picking up a starfish and very gently throwing them into the ocean. “Young lady,” he asked, “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” “The sun is up, and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die.” “But young lady, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference.” The young woman listened politely, paused and then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves, saying, “It made a difference for that one.” The old man looked at the young woman inquisitively and thought about what she had done. Inspired, he joined her in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved.’ To help Soles4Souls visit www.soles4souls.com.au for more information.
