EDITOR'S LETTER It’s September and that means it’s time to spring into action. For many of us, spring is the kick start we need to focus on getting into shape before summer. I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to US master trainer Jillian Michaels ahead of her visit to Melbourne. The fitness guru will be in town helping Melburnians maximize their life by setting goals and equipping them with the skills to transform their lives.
I could certainly use a few tips myself from Jillian on how to juggle career, family, fitness and life in general.
topped the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index (EIU) for the fourth consecutive year.
Someone who seems to have it all together though at the moment is Melbourne’s own Anthony Callea. It’s 10 years since he was named runner-up on Australian Idol and his list of credits since then is formidable. I had a chat with the recently engaged pint-sized performer ahead of his one-night only show celebrating the music of legend George Michael. Can you believe it’s been 30 years since Careless Whisper was released?
The EIU Liveability Index is the world’s most widely accepted ranking of liveability, comparing 140 of the world’s major cities.
September also means it’s school holidays. If you’re looking for activities to keep the youngsters entertained, then be sure to check out the 3000 Melbourne school holiday feature in this edition. There are also details on how you could win a family pass to The Royal Melbourne Show. There really is so much to do in this great city of ours, so it comes as no surprise that Melbourne has
Melbourne’s mix of smart transport and infrastructure, the great arts and cultural scene, sports, retail, hospitality and fashion ensured we retained the top spot for another year. Stay tuned for the 3000 Melbourne guide to the State Election on 29 November. In next month’s edition we talk to all the candidates about what’s important to them and their constituents. Have a great month.

GABRIEL IGLESIAS Gabriel Iglesias returns to Australia following two sold out tours. COVER STORY
ANTHONY CALLEA:
‘LADIES & GENTLEMEN: THE SONGS OF GEORGE MICHAEL’
WHEN: 4 October WHERE: The Palms at Crown TICKETS: ticketek.com.au
IT HAS BEEN 30 YEARS SINCE GEORGE MICHAEL RELEASED HIS DEBUT SINGLE. IN HONOUR OF THE MUSIC LEGEND’S CAREER, MELBOURNE’S OWN ANTHONY CALLEA WILL TAKE TO THE STAGE LATER THIS MONTH TO PERFORM A ONE-NIGHT ONLY SHOW IN TRIBUTE TO HIS MUSICAL IDOL. BY CHELSEA ARNOLD Callea, who last month announced his plans to marry long-term partner Tim Campbell in New Zealand next year, said the Anthony Callea: Ladies & Gentlemen: The Songs of George Michael tour follows the recent release of the CD and DVD of the same name. “It all started out with me having a bit of fun. I didn’t ever intend to record this or tour it. I have been a fan of George Michael since day one. He is someone I have always looked up to,” Callea said. “George Michael has been such an influence for me as a singer from a young age. His classic hits and vocal ability make him one of the finest male vocalists of our time and his musical legacy will live on forever. He has never pigeonholed himself and I admire that.” Earlier this year Callea performed The Song's Of George Michael in front of a sell out crowd at The Palms at Crown.

The CD/DVD was recorded live with a nine-piece band and showcases Callea’s incredible live vocal ability and personal musical connection with the songs of this legendary artist. It features special guest performances from Casey Donovan, Tim Campbell and John Foreman. “I only had one shot to record it and I kept thinking I better not stuff this up. There is something about recording live that adds an extra element to your performances.
I love performing in a live environment. I love feeding off that pressure. It was ridiculous and the whole crowd was up on their feet.” Audiences will be treated to Callea’s interpretation of Outside, Too Funky, Faith, I knew you were waiting, Jesus to a child, and Father Figure, among some older WHAM favourites. “It’s a good reflection of the music we have grown up with.” It’s been 10 years since Callea was named runner-up on television’s Australian Idol. “At times it feels like it has been 10 years but then it feels like it’s flown. It was a turning point in my life. What I have learned and gained along the way cannot be bought. I was 21 when I walked on that stage from Werribee. It played with my head a little bit. I have loved almost all of it. But I wake up every day and get to sing. I do work my arse off though. People pay their hard-earned money to come and see me, so I have a responsibility to give them my absolute best.” Callea has released three albums in the past 18 months, performed two tours in that time, and performed in the musical, Grease. “I just want to get back in the studio next year. I haven’t released a full album of originals for a while. I am actually really looking forward to getting in the studio and writing,” he said.

AUSTRALIA FIRST MET YOU ON THE BIGGEST LOSER, WHAT BRINGS YOU BACK HERE? Australia is like a second home to me. I'm so excited to be coming back and bringing my live show Maximise Your Life, down under. WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT FROM YOUR SHOW? The actual live show is a journey of self-exploration that will allow each member in the audience to shatter old defeating beliefs and habits, harness their potential, and build a better life. We'll zero in on what holds us back, why, and subsequently how to break through in order to live the life we want and not the life we think we should. Then we delve much deeper to help the audience connect with their passion again, redefine their self image, dramatically enhance their belief in their capability, and impart the tools we all need in order to take action that yields life changing results. HOW WILL THE SHOW ENHANCE PEOPLE'S LIVES?
It wakes them up. It exposes the ways in which we have settled in our lives and why. It teaches them how to begin living authentically and in their truth, not the truth that has been put upon them through family dynamics or societal pressures. It roots out paralysing fears and crippling beliefs about their worth and capabilities and gives them the tools to banish these demons forever. It gives people the actual how to of discovering their potential and building their self worth. It then gives them the actual skills and tools they will need in order to make the actions they take powerful and effective. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO KEEP SHARING YOUR MESSAGE? I love my work because it's so cathartic for me. While I am far from perfect I win a lot more than I lose and I have the tools to manage my setbacks and failures. I owe this to being empowered and informed and it's become my passion in life to share that same empowering info with others. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE BEING A MOTHER TO TWO YOUNG CHILDREN WITH YOUR SUCCESSFUL CAREER? It's not easy. It just isn't. Maria Shriver said: "you can have it all, just not at the same time." There is no doubt that something will have to give.
In addition, we have to jettison the notion that perfect is possible. It isn't. It's simply not a part of the human condition. No one is perfect. Once I got past that I realised that what mattered was my effort and progress not perfection. I think we always believe that something has to go and in order to not disappoint that something is our own happiness. That's a huge mistake. Kids and significant others know when we aren't happy and that makes them unhappy. Plus, we have to role model health and happiness for our kids. It's not selfish to take some time for you and in fact, it's one of the best things you can do for your family. WHAT IS YOUR ONE KEY MESSAGE TO PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO MIGHT BE CONSIDERING MAKING A BIG LIFE TRANSFORMATION? Find your why. A detailed authentic why is critical before beginning any journey of self improvement because anything worth having in life is work and doing that work has to be worth it to you. Really detail the reasons why you want something. ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO TELL MELBURNIANS ABOUT MAXIMISE YOUR LIFE? If you are feeling stuck in any facet of your life - personally or professionally please come to the show. Let me give you the tools to blast through these obstacles and achieve your goals and dreams. We are all here for a reason. Your dreams are your destiny. Let me teach you how to fulfil it.

CORE
STRENGTH

CORE STRENGTH. EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT. But what is it really? Is it important or just another fitness buzzword that will disappear quicker than last season’s leg warmers? Core strength should not be confused with having a rippling six-pack like a model on an exercise machine infomercial. Core muscles are the muscles around the trunk of the body including the abdominal, oblique (sides), mid and lower back. These muscles all work together, to stabilise the body and support the spine. Core muscles are important because they not only make you strong, but they are also responsible for making a whole load of movements we need to make every day easier and more controllable. Whether it’s reaching for the top shelf in the supermarket, carrying the kids, or standing for long periods – everything we do is easier if the core is strong.
HERE ARE FIVE QUICK EXERCISES FOR BUILDING CORE STRENGTH SUPERMAN Lie on the floor face down. Reach your arms directly in front of you, reaching to the opposite wall. Straighten your legs, "gluing" your heels and inner thighs together by tightening the inner thighs and glutes. Lift your arms, chest, head, legs and feet off of the ground. At this point, only your belly and hips are touching the ground (no knees or feet). Keep holding your arms, chest, head, and legs up, engaging your low-mid back muscles and your glutes, for at least 30 seconds.

THE PLANK
MOUNTAIN CLIMBER
Lie face down on a mat and using forearms, lean on your clasped hands, with your toes supporting the base of your body. Keep your torso straight and rigid, hold and constrict your core. Relax and repeat. Work on increasing your times.
Assume a push-up position with your feet shoulderwidth apart, your chest over hands, your gaze out in front of your hands and your body in a straight line from your head to your toes. Raise your right foot and bring your knee forward in the direction of your left elbow. The key is to move this leg without moving or rotating your hips and torso.
LYING GLUTE PUSHUP The lying glute pushup targets your butt, abdominal and back muscles. Lie on your back with your feet resting on top of a Swiss ball. Push through your heels to raise your butt off the floor as high as possible. Form a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Hold this position for 60 seconds.
SIDE PLANK The side plank engages the often-overlooked muscles that help support the core. This exercise will help increase hip strength and stability.
A weak core can leave us exposed to injuries, back and spinal problems, all from a lack of support and poor posture.

CITY TOPS
WORLD’S BEST It’s something we already knew but the Global Liveability Index has confirmed it – Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city. Melbourne topped the index by the Economist Intelligence Unit for the fourth consecutive year. The EIU Liveability Index is the world’s most widely accepted ranking of liveability, comparing 140 of the world’s major cities. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said Melbourne excelled in the five criteria: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

“To be named the world’s most liveable city for four consecutive years is a great honour and a testament to the enviable lifestyle that Melbourne offers,” Cr Doyle said. “Safety, sustainability and smart growth have been the keys to Melbourne’s liveability and prosperity. Providing transport and infrastructure have been key elements in smart growth. “Melbourne brings together commerce, education, health, sport, cultural and residential areas, all of which can be accessed by foot, on bike, in cars or public transport.”

A HEALTHY DOSE OF FILM A unique night of inspirational films is returning to Melbourne, promising to entertain and perhaps even challenge the audience, writes Jonathan Green. Health and hospitals are popular subjects for film and television, but until you’re actually diagnosed by a cranky man with a cane going by the name of ‘Doctor House’ it is worth remembering that it’s just entertainment. The Reel Health International Short Film Festival (Reel Health) was launched last year, proving to be a wonderful night of entertainment that explored the concept of genuine health issues and how they affect communities. The concept of ‘health’ can take many meanings, and the subjects covered in the films surprised many in the audience. Highlights of the 2013 finalists’ screenings included a short documentary following a group of amputees who formed a rock-climbing group and embarked on a five-day climb, to a man’s personal journey visiting the mental health institution where his mother spent two decades against her will.
Pleasingly, Reel Health is returning this year with a bigger and better format spread over two distinct nights to allow audiences to engage with the films on different levels. The first night will be the Premiere and Awards Night; hosting dignitaries, industry professionals and business stakeholders. The night will feature the announcement and screenings of the award-winning films, plus an opportunity to hear from selected filmmakers and liaise with industry stakeholders. The second night will be an evening of dedicated films, allowing the audience to see a greater selection of submissions in an uninterrupted format. Reel Health festival director, Anne Doherty, said this year’s films again promise to inspire, touch and challenge audiences. “During the festival, audiences will see films that share personal journeys and family experiences, that are truly inspirational, thought-provoking and, at times,
breathtaking,” Ms Doherty said. “The short film genre is a platform that has the potential to change the paradigm of health conversations by giving a voice to the voiceless and providing an avenue for the great story tellers to tell their health stories,” she said. It is a project of two interacting elements: an avenue for storytellers to deliver their passionate message in a professional and engaging environment – as well as a night of wonderful entertainment for the audience that should provoke conversation for the betterment of our communities. REEL HEALTH INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL WHEN: 21-22 October WHERE: 21 October at The Kino Cinemas, 45 Collins Street, Melbourne, 22 October, at The Capitol Theatre, 113 Swanston Street, Melbourne. FIVE DAYS OF FUN The Docklands Arts, Laughs and Blues Festival, will kick off on 1 October for five days of Blues music, cabaret, theatre, arts and laughs right in the heart of Docklands. Whether you love to dance, laugh or be entertained by incredible artists – there’s just about something for everyone. Docklands, Arts, Laughs and Blues, presented by Wonderland Fun Park and Spiegeltent, includes five days of tantalising circus, cabaret, stand-up comedy, illusion, puppetry, burlesque, art spaces and movies which will build to a free event, the Docklands
Blues Music Festival, a Wonderland of Rhythm. The Blues Music Festival will feature 22 performances throughout the Harbour Town Precinct from 11 am to 9pm on Sunday, 5 October. The acts include multi-award winning Blues singer, songwriter and guitarist, Brian Fraser, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the music industry. His hectic schedule incudes spending most months touring the country, performing at festivals, pubs and clubs, playing his own brand of stompboard-driven Blues with humorous story-telling.
With five indoor and outdoor music stages, including licensed seated venues you can be assured of securing a top spot to catch the tunes. Not only are there talented musicians, there is good old southern blues cuisine, carnival rides and attractions. The centrepiece of the festival is Wonderland Fun Park’s beautiful Belgium Spiegeltent ‘Salon de Elegance’ oozing with nostalgia and charm, a playground for one and all.
LANEWAY TO OPEN OFF BOURKE There are few things more quintessentially Melbourne than its network of meandering laneways. At Charter Hall’s 570 Bourke Street development, the property group will continue the development of Melbourne’s laneway culture by reenergising the surrounding streets and creating a new laneway and dining destination.
magmedia.com.au

As part of the construction of the landmark office project, Charter Hall is reconfiguring Gresham Street into a one-way thoroughfare to make it pedestrian-friendly. It will also add an al fresco café with outdoor seating and leafy landscaping designed to increase the site’s connectivity and permeability with its environment, while also allowing employees to connect with the city around them. Four retail tenancies will be added to activate the surrounding pedestrian-friendly street
and laneway frontages to further enhance the building’s Bourke Street lobby. Charter Hall Core Plus Office Fund manager Chris Forbes said it was vital for property owners to protect and develop Melbourne’s laneway spaces to ensure their continued survival as the city landscape develops. “The new laneway aims to enrich this precinct and give people an energised and exciting place to spend time out of the office,” he said. “The addition of a cafe as well as a dedicated ground floor entrance for lifestyle centre users will completely change the building’s relationship with its environment and make it an enjoyable place to do business. This new and uniquely Melburnian space will create a sense of community and a new public space.” Construction of 570 Bourke Street by Brookfield Multiplex has begun with completion expected by mid next year.

ARRAY OF APARTMENTS GOING UP STARTING EARLY IS THE KEY TO BUILDING SUPER SUCCESS BY ANDREW HEWISON
A COMMON STRATEGY FOR BUILDING WEALTH IS THE USE OF COMPOUND EARNINGS, YET THIS CONCEPT IS GENERALLY NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD UNTIL LATER IN LIFE - WHEN ARGUABLY YOU HAVE LESS TIME TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. Australia’s superannuation system is structured for people to accumulate wealth during their working life so as to provide an income for the time when they stop work. It is a long-term system, and most funds are designed to ensure their members benefit from the compounding of returns. magmedia.com.au
16
The benefits of contributing a little bit extra to superannuation over your working life are huge. Sacrificing a small amount of your pre-tax salary towards making additional superannuation contributions can turbo-charge your retirement
balance. It is a strategy that is not used often, yet arguably can make the most difference to your lifestyle in retirement. Using some of your pre-tax salary to make additional contributions to superannuation also provides you with an income tax saving along the way. For example, someone earning $50,000 per annum and contributing 10% of their salary ($5,000 per annum) to superannuation by way of a salary sacrifice arrangement would see a personal income tax saving of $1,725 each year. However, the impact over the longer term is more important. Take for example a person starting work at 20 years of age on a salary of $45,000 per annum. The following table shows the difference between making no extra contributions to superannuation, and contributing 5%

Mirvac Group residential executive John Carfi said the “topping off” of Array was a significant milestone. “We are thrilled to share this event with our Array purchasers and local Yarra’s Edge residents. However, if you waited until you were 40 years of age, and then started salary sacrificing, the amount that could be accumulated by your 65th birthday would be significantly reduced. “As the final stages of construction get under way at Array, we are also excited by the upcoming launch of the next chapter at Yarra’s Edge, which will include 18 brand new strata-free homes and a residential tower featuring a flexible and innovative product range that heralds the future of waterfront living.” Array, just eight metres from the water’s edge, offers a new level of customisation in its luxury one, two, three and four-bedroom residences. With its sky-high, twin multi-level penthouse offering inspired by international design trends, Array marks a significant contribution to the thriving Yarra’s Edge precinct. Settlement of the development is anticipated early next year.
after costs, pay rises of 5% every year, and inflation of 3% per annum. Lower rates of return (or higher costs), or lower pay rises and lower contributions result in a much reduced amount of superannuation accumulated. While waiting until you are 40 to start contributing to superannuation is not fatal to the accumulation of money for your retirement, it may impact the kind of life you lead once you finally hang up the tools. If you want to ensure you have sufficient wealth to fund your lifestyle when you are not working, it might be time to consider contributing extra to superannuation. Prior to taking such action, speaking to one of our professional advisers would help you target the right contributions to help you achieve your own goals.

THE GREAT POPULATION DEBATE WE HAVE TO HAVE to grow from its current 4.5 million to a massive 12 million people. Think we suffer from traffic gridlock, crowded public transport and expensive home prices now? Imagine three times as many Melburnians trying to inhabit roughly the same urban space. Recently I interviewed entrepreneur Dick Smith about where Australia’s population is heading. He reckons if we don’t reduce our annual immigration intake, within a century this country could have 60 million to 80 million people living in it. Such a large population could indeed be supported here, but at what cost? If Australia’s total number of residents tripled, Melbourne could be expected
Standalone houses would give way to towering blocks of flats, and heading out for a quiet Sunday drive would be a thing of legend. Water is a precious resource that at present we waste. Most rain is channelled out into Port Phillip Bay instead of being captured for use. Some recycling is performed at the Werribee treatment plant, but not nearly enough. A much bigger Melbourne of the future would

GUESTS’
FAVOURITE One Melbourne hotel has been named the top rated hotel in Australia, according to reviews on leading travel website Wotif.com
Reviewers rated The Langham in Melbourne, the best hotel with an overall review score from Wotif. com reviewers of 4.74 (out of five).
Wotif.com product director Donna Rodios said “there’s no denying The Langham in Melbourne is an iconic luxury property which prides itself on its impeccable standard of service”.
“Its number one ranking by Wotif.com reviewers evidences The Langham’s focus on quality service and ensuring a superior guest experience,” Ms Rodios said. “Some of the most popular words used to describe The Langham on Wotif. com guest reviews are testament to its high standard of customer service,
have little choice but to reuse most household waste water, a prospect many present day inhabitants find off-putting. The ways in which our city would change with 12 million people is as long as your arm. Parks would become crowded. Beaches in summer even more so. Camping trips would require a much longer drive into the interior than is presently the case. Obtaining an already precious ticket to the Grand Final would become almost impossible. Life in general would be crowded, noisy and expensive. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Unlike most countries or indeed continents, Australia retains the ability to choose its population levels. As is the case with most developed nations, the domestic
birthrate has fallen just below two children per couple. This guarantees that without substantial immigration our rate of growth would remain very low. So let’s have a debate not about annual immigrant quotas, but rather what we want Australia to look like in 50 or 100 years. I like the idea of a plebiscite at the next federal election whereby voters could choose their preferred future population total. Once this plebiscite is done, the results could be averaged and a widely supported target agreed. Immigration levels could then be set based on this target, and the whole issue would be dealt with for generations to come. Whether we end up with 30m or 80m people living here, such an important choice should receive our collective assent. Tune in and listen to Tom between 3-6pm weekdays on 3AW’s Drive.

The Langham Melbourne managing director Ben Sington said he was delighted with the hotel’s top ranking.
“Each of the hotels in the top 10 list are the best rated hotels in their destination based on reviews scores and number of reviews, up to 1 June 2014.”
“Our focus is on service and guest satisfaction, so it is pleasing when Wotif.com guests take the time to share their experience with other travellers,” Mr Sington said. “We value their comments and it is extremely motivating to receive such an endorsement.” Ms Rodios said the top five Melbourne hotels, according to Wotif.com guest reviews, were all five-star hotels within walking distance of each other. “The Crown Towers ranked second with a score of 4.69, followed by

MELBOURNE CITY HYUNDAI
DEALERSHIP
LAUNCH IT IS A FLAGSHIP FACILITY ON A LANDMARK LOCATION. The new Melbourne City Hyundai dealership opened last month marking a major investment by its parent company, Automotive Holdings Group (AHG). The $8-million dealership was described by AHG managing director Bronte Howson as a welcome addition to the group’s portfolio of more than 150 motor vehicle franchises across Australia and New Zealand. "This is a true destination dealership and I congratulate dealer principal Con Kafetzis and his team on their commitment to this impressive new facility," Mr Howson said. More than 160 guests joined the team at Melbourne City Hyundai to enjoy a night of canapés, drinks and a grand tour of the facility at 37-39 Brady Street, South Melbourne.

AHG executive director strategy and planning Hamish Williams was joined in unveiling the plaque to launch the dealership by Hyundai Motor by Company Australia chief executive officer and president Chul-Hwan (Charlie) Kim.
“This is our seventh Hyundai dealership in Australia; our first in Victoria, and quite rightly a standalone facility given Hyundai’s presence in the Australian market,” Mr Williams said.
AHG also recently opened a Holden and HSV dealership adjacent to Melbourne City Hyundai and has plans to add a third franchise in the near future.
The state-of-the-art Hyundai facility offers customers a world of difference while purchasing or servicing their vehicles: • First class customer facilities and lounge with Wi-Fi. • New service department with the latest Hyundai technology. • Market leading facilities for vehicle financing. • Comprehensive new retail parts department. • More than 100 new and used vehicles on display and access to a national network of pre-owned vehicles.

MOTORING REVIEW BY PAUL MARIC TOYOTA KLUGER
But, don’t expect to fit adults or large teenagers in the third row.
Since storming on to the scene in the year 2000, Toyota’s big-SUV, the Kluger, has been a raging success. Available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, the Kluger’s success has come down to size, versatility and V6 performance.
Boot space is very impressive (as you would expect for a car this size). With the third row erected, there is 195 litres of space. Drop the third row and space increases to 529 litres. If you go even further and drop the second row of seats, luggage space increases to a whopping 1,171 litres.
Fast forward 14 years and the Kluger remains a success story for the Japanese car company. The third generation Kluger has undergone a styling change with more masculine angles and better use of interior space. Starting from $40,990 for the entry-level front-wheel-drive Kluger GX, the range continues on to the $67,990 top-spec allwheel-drive Grande. I drove the volume selling $44,990 four-wheel-drive GX model to get a feel for the entry-level range. Inside the cabin, the Kluger still feels like a step up into a larger SUV. This gives drivers the feeling of power and height over other cars on the road. There’s also a newly designed cabin that features soft-touch finishes and an updated steering wheel. Much like the second generation, the new Kluger is very spacious inside. The front seat and second row passengers have a large amount of leg and headroom to play with. There is also a third row, which increases the seating capacity of the Kluger to seven.
Under the Kluger’s bonnet is a familiar V6 engine. The 3.5-litre V6 engine is the same as the last model, but Toyota claims that fuel consumption has decreased to 10.6L/100km (from 11.0L/100km). The engine is mated to a very smooth shifting six-speed automatic gearbox. At just over $40,000 for the entry level Kluger, the segment is filled with options. Buyers can try the new Nissan Pathfinder, Mazda CX-9, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Ford Territory. Given the competition, the Kluger scrubs up very nicely on paper. While the fuel consumption was a little higher than expected, Toyota offers a frontwheel-drive version that is more affordable and uses less fuel. The Kluger is a clear winner in a fiercely competitive segment. Paul Maric is a Melbourne based, independent motoring journalist & mechanical engineer. THE CYCLE OF CHANGE: DENIAL BY DANA ATKIN - PROFESSIONAL KINESIOLOGY PRACTITIONER
Change can be difficult for many people. Even our biology, our body is hardwired for survival. And because we’ve survived up until now with things exactly the way they have always been, then why should we change anything, right? There is a process that we
From the coast to the country, you’ll find delicious preserves, tasty jams, spicy spices and silky chocolate treats - to name a few. Anyone hungry? And that’s not all. Clementine’s also stocks quality ceramic kitchenware, designer homewares, souvenirs, candles, shawls, soft toys and so much more. Gifts for all occasions are covered. It’s a global market and many products that we buy in Australia today are made in far away places. My research lead me to the Australian Made website where I discovered research published by the Industry Capability Network. For every $1 million of new or retained manufacturing business in Australia, the following flow through the economy; $333,900 worth of tax revenue generated; $985,000 of value-added generated; $95,000 worth of welfare benefits saved and 10 full-time jobs created. So whether you’re looking for a gift to give to a local, a visitor from interstate or to send overseas -
all go through with every change. We tend to resist it because of our built-in survival mechanism. We fight it because we worry that if we change one thing, then maybe other things will change, leaving us powerless. Sometimes change is thrust upon us and sometimes we choose to change wether consciously or subconsciously. Every change, regardless of how it comes about goes through a series of common steps, including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance and letting go. This month, I’m going to talk about the first step, denial. Often, the denial step is missed because it usually comes before the desire to change has been realised. We deny there is any problem with the current situation - be it weight, work, home or health - and we continue with

things the way they are, often looking for other, not-sohealthy ways to satisfy the unfulfilled circumstance. Our inability to recognise that something needs to change is frustrating to not only ourselves but also for those who love us. Then, when those we love speak up about the issue at hand, we get defensive because it’s true and we’re not ready to face it, or change it. Consider this. Where in life have you been feeling defensive lately? Could your defensive approach to the situation be because on some level, there’s an element of truth to what the other person is saying? Is it something you’re willing to work through now? If not, write it down somewhere so that when the time comes, you have a beginning point.

PRINCES HEAT UP THE
NIGHT AT CROWN
Every Saturday night, year-round, women of all ages witness the stage spectacular that is Princes of the Night – the longestrunning stage show at Crown. Infusing the taboo world of striptease, lust and sexual desire with perfectly choreographed, highly-refined burlesque and cabaret, Princes Of The Night has just launched its newest season and is turning up the heat to celebrate 10 years. The show which features five male dancers plus one female dancer has withstood the test of time, while other male revues suffered. It is positioned as one of the best stage productions in Melbourne, under the guidance of Melbournian and coveted stage performer Craig Weise. Weise, an established male performer, created Princes Of The Night in 1996 after being
inspired by the theatrics and quality of male stage productions in Japan. “I performed around Melbourne in public and private shows before touring throughout Southern Japan for two years. The quality and theatrics of the shows in Japan were phenomenal, I knew immediately that I had to bring this uniquely erotic yet sophisticated experience to Australia,” Weise said. “I am incredibly proud of the Princes
and of myself for being able to have this long-running show at Crown. The cast, crew, choreographers, costume designers, professional directors – I am really proud of them all. It’s been an awesome journey and now I’m even thinking about taking the Princes to the Sydney market.” Boasting some of Australia’s finest performers, including Travis Khan from King Kong, Princes Of The Night makes for the ultimate girls night out, hens
night or any night for that matter. Weise, who plays the King of the Princes, said the show takes audience members on a lustful, medieval journey of a woman’s desire to the present day with tantalising, comedic and grandiose performances to music that moves the body and soul. “Our show is the perfect combination of underground erotic and high-end indulgent burlesque and cabaret. We cater to everyone, groups of mothers and daughters, girls on their hens night, husband and wife duos and even groups of men who come along for a great time. “The audiences just can’t believe the calibre of the talent. Plus there is such a mix of storytelling and theatre, they are genuinely surprised by the comedy element. We really pride ourselves on being more than strip, we’re the complete entertainment package.”

3000’S MOVIE REVIEW
PREDESTINATION By Simon Bailey Predestination, written and directed by the Spierig Brothers, is a time travel saga that succeeds to electrify the mind and tug at the heartstrings. With engrossing performances from Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook and Noah Taylor, the film twists and turns through the eras before a startling click into place. Any synopsis is best kept short and sweet, as a clumsy attempt at detailing Predestination’s plot would likely do more harm than good. This gem delivers as much action and thrill as it does drama. The Bartender - a wizened time travel agent played by Hawke - is on an assignment to intercept and halt a terrorist ready to ravage 1970s New York.

While working undercover in a dusty bar, he strikes up a D&M with brooding confession columnist 'The Unmarried Mother' (Snook). A thoroughly compelling chunk of the film is spent as The Unmarried Mother recounts to The Bartender her life metamorphosis, as it were. With slathers of time travel - one learns that the biographies of these characters are more interlaced than we bargained for. Understanding the full extent of this nexus is about as easy for the mind to comprehend as, say, quantifying the universe. Any more about this would simply mean spilling the beans.
Australian actress Snook is a master of transformation and her performance is astonishing. When the narrative jumps back in time we get to know Snook as Jane - a young prodigious misfit on the cusp of a brilliant career as an astronaut. Her street smarts, sharpness and drive make us really want to hand it to the underdog. Years later, when Jane sits in the bar as The Unmarried Mother, she is unrecognisable. Life’s twists and turns and Predestination is a concoction of these little doozies - have rendered her someone completely different. The ease with which Snook shifts between these very different characters testifies to her gift as an actress. Each era the story visits has a distinct feel and look injected with colours and set designs that help to add character to each vignette. Shot locally, a keen Melbourne eye will be able to recognise filming locations around the city and excitedly whisper to their adjacent companion, “I know where that is”. City buildings, rooftops, archways, gardens and parking metres all seem quite familiar and are fun little bonuses for local audiences. Trying to solve the film’s time travel paradoxes though may be a bit harder to decipher. Yet Predestination is such an enthralling dance through time that it’s more than worth the lasting brainteaser. In cinemas now. Rated MA15+.
