The Observation Wheel has almost all cabins installed and everybody including businesses have their fingers crossed that hopefully it will be operating again by March.

The Premier and Minister Guy recently announced the planned development of Western Park, a 2 ha. site located at the end of Docklands Drive at Bolte Bridge. The plans for the community park comprise an oval, pavilion and playground. The oval is not full-size. Work will start by mid next year and be done in stages over a few years. Included is a pedestrian bridge from the Park across to Central Pier which

Docklands drawing attention to Melbourne’s city waterfront through constant innovative and exciting events that continue to put Docklands on the map as a must see destination. It is our pleasure to include updates from all three of these entities in this October issue along with some great events suited to all ages. Enjoy October and your fabulous Docklands Precinct!

There is certainly no shortage of events, places to see and things to do at Docklands. There is also nowhere quite like Docklands that has such committed people and organisations dedicated to delivering the best outcomes for the precinct. is of concern to boat owners; it would not be constructed for about ten years. The DCA works in with other Community Groups. Presidents of Southbank, East City and myself recently met with Minister Guy, addressing issues such as developers needing to observe Government guidelines; also the need for consultation and transparency. It is good to see the construction of the new Community Centre and Library well advanced. Located at the end of Bourke Street near the river it will also have a sizeable park in front. It is a large three storey building. We have been pushing for provision of these and other amenities for a long time. I have been appointed President of the Owners Corporation of Victoria, which is a developing body representing OC’s, formerly Body Corporates, currently covering high-rise apartment buildings in the inner city and Docklands. We have counterpart bodies interstate.

If any reader would like to become a member of the DCA or has any suggestions they wish to put forward regarding activities or issues, they are welcome to contact us at docklandscommunityassociation@ gmail.com If you would like to talk to me directly about any aspect, you are welcome to call me on 0412 097 706. DESTINATION DOCKLANDS The calendar is filling with Docklands events include ING Real Estate, Lend Lease, Mirvac, Atlantic Group [v] and MAB. Spring has already seen us out and about promoting the Docklands and its local businesses. We quenched over 600 Visitor Information Centre staff and hotel concierges at the Melbourne Tourism Industry Exchange as part of Victoria Tourism Week last month and they were all hungry to learn more about what Docklands offers. We have designed walking trails for Docklands corporates to inspire workers to get out and about in their lunch breaks discovering some of the 190 hectare site while drawing in fresh air and having a rest from technology. Anita Donnelly CEO, Destination Docklands Thanks to the City of Melbourne as our funding is now secure for the next three years which means

you’ll see us delivering events for you and promoting Docklands the destination through marketing efforts and positive media and public relations campaigns. We’d also like to thank our other funders which

Some of our upcoming events planned include Christmas on the Green which will take place on Fridays 29 November, 6 and 13 December in Victoria Harbour. There will be live bands, a pop up brewery and sustainable gifts to purchase from

4pm – 8pm each night. Docklands will also be hosting a grand Australia Day expected to attract 30 000 people to our waterfront with a great Aussie backyard event including thong throwing, sausage sizzle hosted by the local Safeway, kite making and flying plus lots more! Future events to note in your calendar are the midnight New Year’s Eve fireworks, free outdoor movie nights on 20 and 27 February and 6 and 13 March 2014 at Yarra’s Edge and a repeat of the Amazing Race style corporate challenge to be held in May 2014. With the weather improving every day it is a great time to visit Docklands for fish and chips or ice cream on the Harbour so we hope to see you soon. THE FRONT - DOCKLANDS SPACES The Front at 424 Docklands Drive is a curated art space dedicated to showing artists who work on large scale art installations and collaborative art work. The artists who show in this art space work in a variety of media to create artwork that creates a real experience for the visitor. Going to The Front offers the art lover and those new to art appreciation a significant encounter with interesting art work and ideas.

The Front is part of the Docklands Spaces initiative to activate under utilised spaces in the Docklands area. Commissioned by the City of Melbourne, MAB Corporation, and Places Victoria, Docklands Spaces is a pilot initiative by Renew Australia to incubate short-term uses by creative enterprises, artists and independent local initiatives. The Front have enjoyed

taking part in the project and have quickly made use of the enormous space made available to them. The latest show features the work of talented artist and curator Michael Brennan, who has installed a suspension bridge made out of fence palings in the front window. In Suspended Animation enjoy the way he has recycled an old fence that once surrounded a family home into a bridge of softly graduated colours and textures; all in a shop window. Navigate around the beautiful bridge structure and you enter the world of An Architecture for Secrets. In this work, artists Shelley Krycer and Deb Bain King invite you to imagine and construct spaces for kindness using a multitude of delicate modular paper forms.

The Front, 424 Docklands Drive, Docklands The Front is open Wednesday - Saturday 12 - 5 pm Further Information: www.facebook.com/TheFront424 or blog http://thefrontdocklands.tumblr.com or call Deb on 0428 538 090

A letter from Docklands Chamber of Commerce President: Stephen Clement Greetings and I am delighted to have the opportunity to tell you about Chamber activities over the past couple of months. In July, we were very pleased to partner with 3AW & host a very special networking event at Media House. Our guests were treated to a passionate and inspiring presentation from David Mann, including a rare behind the scenes tour of the entire studios! We heralded a new phase in the DCC-3AW relationship and we are lucky that Ebba Lindblom, Senior Account Manager, has joined the DCC Executive Committee. Our annual Fireworks Cruise onboard the MV Mandalay was scheduled in August. Unfortunately, this past winter we experienced unprecedented adverse weather conditions and three of the displays were cancelled, including the one on our Cruise day. We sailed anyway, as the main business of the cruise was to take advantage of the unique waterways aspect of Docklands and hear from Doug Jarvis, Waterways Manager about the Waterfront Connections Committee and progress on that front.

This year, the DCC Executive Committee committed to bringing more training and information sessions on a variety of topics to benefit different categories of Docklands businesses. To this end, we hosted Grant Davidson, marketing guru from Davidson Branding, across to Harbour Town to deliver an enlightening and empowering breakfast presentation on Retail Trends at Medibank Icehouse.

Docklands businesses were also invited to attend Digital Marketing Kickstarts seminar by City of Melbourne. Another is about to be scheduled in October - check www.docklandscc.com.au for details soon. This is an invaluable springboard for businesses wishing to capitalise on the City’s marketing campaign “In the Land of Inbetween”. The DCC Executive Committee has been busy planning & attending events; signing up new members and generally spreading the word about the Chamber around Docklands and beyond. We are pleased to announce that Lend Lease is about to enter an agreement with the Chamber to sponsor Victoria Harbour tenants as associate business members of the Chamber. We are delighted with this outcome - the Chamber can be an important forum for exchange & discussion and a conduit for the dissemination of information. We look forward to an ongoing partnership and we encourage larger landlords/tenancy managers to follow suit and benefit the business community in Docklands. A major item on the DCC Executive agenda has been the new Rules of Association. These are currently being reviewed and will be distributed prior to the next Annual General Meeting which is scheduled to be held 6.30pm, Wednesday 30 October at the Mission to Seafarers. All members will be officially notified via email 21 days prior to the AGM. Please contact Nandini at admin@docklandscc.com.au, if you have any enquiries.

2013 Discover Sailing Day at Docklands Families will be given the unique opportunity to discover the adventurous and exciting world of sailing on trailable yachts for free on Sunday 20 October, as part of Yachting Victoria’s 2013 Discover Sailing program. A variety of large trailable yachts, which are larger than the usual sailing dinghies and feature enclosed cabins, will be on hand at Melbourne City Marina at the Docklands precinct for the public to try out. Discover Sailing Program Manager, Gavin Wall said, “Families will be able to get on board and go for a sail along the marina, as well as explore a variety of different sized and classed trailable yachts on display and speak to owners about their sailing experiences in both competitive sailing and casual cruising.” Compared to sailing dinghies which are only suitable for sailing in enclosed areas off the beach, the trailable yachts are much larger, safer vessels to sail, usually starting from 16 feet and reaching up to 28 feet in length, and are capable of sailing in more open waters. The extra size means that they can be enjoyed with friends and family and used for overnight stays, and are capable of being towed long distances, similar to a caravan.

Trailable Yacht Discover Sailing Day is free to attend and all yachts and safety equipment will be provided by the owners, coinciding with the opening of the 2013-14 sailing season. Also on offer will be show bags and giveaways with the opportunity to learn more about joining the social trailable yacht sailing community. Run by Yachting Victoria, the Discover Sailing program is designed to increase participation in the sport of sailing. More than 3,000 Victorians participated in last year’s inaugural Discover Sailing program, with many taking up yacht club memberships and signing up for Learn to Sail programs.

YACHTING VICTORIA’S 2013 DISCOVER SAILING WHEN: Sunday 20 October from 9.30am to 4pm WHERE: Melbourne City Marina: 109/425 Docklands Drive, Docklands. MORE INFROMATION: www.discoversailing.org.au

Stride against Ovarian Cancer This October The Women’s Cancer Foundation has organised the 100 Women Walk, an important awareness and fund raising event this October in the fight to turn the tide on ovarian cancer, which currently kills 2 out of 3 women diagnosed within 5 years. This statistic is absolutely frightening but there is hope, The Women’s Cancer Foundation are working on a vaccine for ovarian cancer – a collaboration with scientists at the Peter MacCallum Cancer

Centre, Monash University, and scientists from the Belgian not for profit institution, ‘Reliable Cancer Therapies’. In order to make the kind of strides necessary in their research, funds are desperately needed as well as raising the awareness of this insidious disease itself. So this October wear your teal for ovarian cancer awareness, grab your friends and family and join in the fun on Saturday 12th of October from Docklands to Kew East in the 10km, 20km or 50km walk open to

everyone. The day will include a free BBQ for participants, Tupperware gifts and prizes and the chance to meet Celebrity Ambassadors, comedian and actress Denise Scott and Carla Bonner.
