WINTER AT DOCKLANDS –

THE NEW TRADITION

editor Lisa Quittner {editor@magmedia.com.au}

Docklands is the place to be at any time of the year, for those in the know this really isn’t any great revelation, but winter in Docklands is cementing its position as a traditional winter hangout for families as the place to be.

Since the start many moons ago, of the Friday Night Ignite Festivals and Winter’s Eve Celebrations, Docklands has become a destination that I regularly bring my family and friends to from all over Melbourne. In the past few years the tradition has become to meet early, enjoy a meal or some takeaway and find a new Docklands location each week to take in the spectacle and exciting atmosphere of the Friday night fireworks displays. There really is no better highlight for the young or old to kick off the start of a wintery weekend.

Docklands is a fantastic winter destination and with school holidays around the corner it’s hard to go past the Icehouse, school holidays events at Harbour Town, indoor fun at Glow Golf and Wonderland Fun Park never disappoints with their Circus Spectaculars during the winter school holidays. Incidentally it’s a perfectly sized amusement park for families to spend the day at. It’s easy to keep an eye on the kids from all angles while parents can take a minute or 10 to recuperate.

It’s great to see Docklands continue to emerge as a great place to live and work at as well as an exciting destination for Melburnians to visit and discover. There is no shortage of fun and interesting events to take part in. Docklands Community Association, Docklands Chamber of Commerce and Destination Docklands Ltd should all be commended for their marvellous efforts and dedication to the residents and businesses of Docklands. It’s our pleasure to include updates from all three entities in this latest issue. On a last note, I urge you to get behind SoupaCause on June 14th, enjoy a timely winter soup and delicious artisan bread roll from Mill & Bakery at Central Pier , all proceeds will go towards making a difference for the homeless this winter. Please read more on page 4 of this issue.

The DCA has a lot on its’ plate. We deal directly with Places Victoria and Council on community issues. We also are a member of the Docklands Community Forum which meets every two months as does the DCA committee and includes the Chamber of Commerce and individuals with special interests. Matters receiving priority include the provision of a primary school and water activation. Places Victoria has

called tenders for provision of a private school. I think this relates to lack of government money for a State school. The DCA keeps pushing for the resumption of a ferry service and redevelopment of the Esplanade. You will notice that the Esplanade work is starting with repairs and reconstruction preparatory to redevelopment; the DCA is lobbying for provision of a linear park. The DCA also gets requests from students overseas and locally for information on Docklands which we are happy to provide. The DCA works in with other community groups in the City, with

particular emphasis on planning and infrastructure. A meeting arranged with Minister Guy has been postponed due to other commitments. Key issues include high-rise density, traffic density and lack of parking, which are particularly relevant to Docklands. Pressure is being applied for developers to adhere to government guidelines in terms of spacing, overshadowing, sunlight, privacy, vista provision and wind tunnel reduction. Coming events notified by Etihad, Council and the Hub are continually advised to members; there is no shortage.

If any reader would like to become a member of the DCA or has any suggestions they wish to put forward regarding activities or issues, they are welcome to contact us at docklandscommunityassociation@ gmail.com If you would like to talk to me directly about any aspect, you are welcome to call me on 0412 097 706. You can also keep up with things on our website www. docklandscommunityassociation.com Regards to all, Roger Gardner President DCA

THE 2013 HIDDEN FACES OF THE ARCHIBALD EXHIBITION Victorian artists excel in this year’s Hidden Faces of the Archibald Exhibition on display exclusively at Hilton Melbourne South Wharf. Known in art circles as the Victorian Salon des Refusés, Hidden Faces (open exclusively to Victorian artists) runs in tandem with the touring of the Archibald show, offering the unique opportunity for Victorians to rival the ‘official’ Prize selection. A wide variety of subjects, styles and techniques make this year’s display outstanding, featuring comedy, sports, justice, and humanitarism among the familiar and more elusive subjects. Now well established in Melbourne’s arts calendar, Hidden Faces showcases 52 exciting and diverse paintings including well-known subjects such as Dr. Helen Caldicott, Moira Kelly AO, Justice Betty King, actors John Waters and Kate Ritchie, comedians Hamish Blake and Julia Morris, along with high profile journalists, politicians, musicians, models, artists and sportsmen including Gary Ayers, Mil Hanna and David Crayshaw.

Curator of Hidden Faces, Jacqueline Taylor OAM says, “I am constantly amazed at the talent of portrait artists in Victoria. Hidden Faces continues to bring-to-the-fore this expertise in this year’s excellent collection of paintings.” The exhibition will showcase outstanding works by Jim van Geet, Ursula Theinert, Andrew Sibley, Joseph Zbukvic, Polly Ifould, Barbara Tyson, Gillian Warden, Annie On Lee, Peter Ferrier and Matthew Quick, to name a few. “The consistent high quality of these contemporary portraits suits the profile of the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf”, says General Manager, Brett Christ. “We are delighted to host this delightful selection of artworks with OzLink Entertainment.” Visitors to the exhibition are invited to enter the People’s Choice Award and vote for their personal favourite with prizes provided by the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf.

IT’S GOOD TO BE GOOD

Hatem Saleh, pictured centre

– ESPECIALLY FOR

A SOUPACAUSE! Atlantic Group [v] of Companies Managing Director Hatem Saleh will again be embarking on a challenge for a great cause - raising awareness for the thousands of homeless in Australia by spending a night at Eithad stadium for the CEO Sleepout. Last year saw Hatem raise over $39,000 (the highest fund raiser in Victoria) with the help and support of the Atlantic Group [v] of Companies staff and peers with a consecutive sleepout event held in Peninsula, the company’s function room at Central Pier. The money raised was in aid of the St Vincent de Paul Society. ‘It is important for Australians to remember that in this land of opportunity, as easy as things come, they can just as easily be taken away. Last year’s Sleepout was an experience I will never forget,’ said Saleh.

This year Hatem aims to beat his record amount. ‘With the success from last year’s efforts I’ve been inspired to raise the bar. We aim to raise over $55,000 through a supporting event we’ve dubbed SoupaCause. Our regular suppliers have kindly donated produce and our staff will donate their time. All money raised will go straight to the St Vincent de Paul Society. The SoupaCause event will hold two sessions in Docklands one at lunchtime and one at twilight, selling soup and an artisan bread roll for $7.50 a cup on Friday 14th June. Each entity within the Atlantic Group [v] of Companies and the associated businesses at Central Pier will provide their very own themed soup from Atlantic Group [v] and their famous sweet chicken and corn soup, Alumbra and their tomato and basil mascarpone,

Va Bene and their lentil and spinach soup, Woolshed’s Moroccan lamb and cous cous and The Atlantic Restaurant and their Bisque while the artisan bread rolls will be provided by the Mill & Bakery. Be sure to check the Atlantic Group [v] facebook page or website www.atlanticgroupv.com.au for regular updates on the event.

SUPPORT SOUPACAUSE Friday 14 June - Lunch & Twilight Sessions. Watch out for this pop up location along Harbour Esplanade. Visit their Facebook page – Atlantic Group [v] or their website – www.atlanticgroupv.com.au under News and Events for updates.

We held a successful & entertaining networking evening in March at Docklands own Wonderland Spiegeltent. Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley and Cr. Kevin Louey were both present and addressed our guests. Wonderland Spiegeltent also took the opportunity to showcase its upcoming autumn/ winter program, which was highly entertaining and there were plenty of laughs and gasps of amazement from the audience! The Spiegeltent team was wonderfully hospitable and everyone enjoyed the conversation, exchange and entertainment. You may recall that we hosted a digital information session in February and there was clear interest in participating

in further workshops. To this end, we liaised with Tourism Victoria and in May we brought together a group of businesses to upload their information to the visitvictoria.com website. This was a very hands-on exercise and gave participants the opportunity to take control and put their business on the map! Quest Docklands, a long standing Chamber Member, sponsored and hosted this event at their newly refurbished premises and dished up a delicious breakfast. All in all, it was a great way to start the day! Later that same week, the Docklands Chamber of Commerce Team participated in the inaugural Water Ratrace 2013 - a fantastic event put on by Destination Docklands which encouraged business teams to go forth and discover Docklands through a variety of challenges. Members of the

Chamber team made beds, climbed stairs and rigging, swam and cycled their way to victory! Congratulations to them for winning and also to the organisers - Destination Docklands; all the participating businesses who provided the unique challenges; Etihad Stadium for the networking function that followed; and all the other competitors for a great event! In June the Chamber partners with AMP, VECCI and Tolhurst Druce & Emmerson to bring a special EOFY information event, at which AMP will preface a special offer for Chamber Members, VECCI will present on super changes and TDE will provide legal information for employers. The event is scheduled to be held 5.45pm, Tuesday 11 June at AMP, 750 Collins Street, Docklands. Be sure to register by email to admin@docklandscc.com.au

We are also working with 3AW to bring media and business together at Media House in July. This event is tentatively scheduled to be held on Tuesday 16 July as an evening event – be sure to check www.docklandscc.com.au for details which will be finalised very soon. This will be a great networking and engagement opportunity and we are looking forward to a fantastic event. Winter in Docklands is shaping up to a great start with a “Docklands Welcomes Winter” FREE Family Fun Day being held 2-6pm on Saturday 1 June at New Quay Piazza and organised by Destination Docklands. We are also looking forward to the traditional Friday Night Fireworks starting in July –watching the night sky light up over the water is always spectacular. Winter in Docklands is wonderful, so come on down and enjoy Melbourne’s waterfront precinct! www.docklandscc.com.au or email admin@docklandscc.com.au

2013 PRECIOUS METAL BALL

- A STEELY SUCCESS! The Myer Community Fund hosted its annual black tie Precious Metal Ball last month at Central Pier’s Peninsula. Now in its ninth year, the 2013 event was an overwhelming success raising in excess of $700,000. A donation of $250,000 will be made to Redkite, to help support their important work in providing assistance to children and young people diagnosed with cancer and their families. The remaining funds raised will all go towards the charities supported by the Myer Stores Community Fund. More than 900 guests from the retail, business and fashion industries attended the event at Peninsula which was co-hosted by comedian and radio presenter, Adam Spencer and Channel 10 journalist, Magdalena Roze, and included performances from Justice

Crew, ‘Kath and Kim’ star and stand-up comedian, Peter Rowsthorn, while guests danced late into the night to The Matt Hetherington Band. Special Guests included Myer Ambassadors, Kris Smith and Lauren Phillips, MYER CEO Bernie Brookes, and Rhys Muldoon and Gyton Grantley from ‘House Husbands’. To date the Precious Metal Ball has raised more than $4.3 million since 2004 and organisers extend their gratitude to the companies and individuals who showed their support and gave so generously on the night. The Myer Stores Community Fund supports more than 80 charity organisations nationally and is committed to building upon Myer’s tradition of philanthropic support to the community.

DESTINATION DOCKLANDS

WHERE THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING HAPPENING! Anita Donnelly CEO, Destination Docklands On Friday 17 May Docklands came alive with superheroes, rat catchers, forks, knives, spoons and pyjama clad random animals. It was all for the Amazing Race style corporate challenge event. The teams were tenacious in their strategies and their spirit of competition was evident as they raced around the entire precinct collecting clues, completing physically demanding challenges and discovering hidden secrets of their working-week home town. The event would not have been possible without the generosity of Etihad Stadium’s Medallion Club or Medibank, our partners. Likewise big thanks go to all the local businesses that supported the event by entering teams, offering prizes and hosting challenges. Feedback received included: “wow is all I can say...this is what Docklands needs more of”; “awesome, a fantastic event”; and “congratulations on a magnificent event”. Our free family fun day on Saturday at NewQuay was a winner. With dancers, a DJ, an interactive ice sculpture, kite making and flying and huskie dogs, the hundreds of families who attended had a terrific free
