Over the New Year break, I took to the high seas for the first time with my family on the Dawn Princess as we sailed from Melbourne to the north and south islands of New Zealand. Departing from Port Melbourne was a draw card in making our decision to embark on a summer vacation at sea.
Port Melbourne dining destinations into our first issue for 2012. Port Melbourne is unique in many ways and while snapping a few shots of the Dawn Princess at Station Pier on a beautiful sunny Sunday, dodging the inline skaters, bike riders and pram pushers, I wondered why I hadn’t spent more time in the past uncovering the many charms and the lifestyle of this cove of activity. I would love to hear of any upcoming events or stories you wish to share, please feel free to drop me a line, our next issue of 3207 Port Melbourne will feature the month of May.
As they say, in life, it isn’t about the destination but about the journey and in our case I can honestly say it was so much about the journey sailing to and exploring parts of New Zealand through the ports. It was great – despite the NZ weather! We are starting off our year on a grand note as we welcome and feature many

Beach Tennis Paul Mapley and Kellie de Burgh brought the sport of Beach Tennis to Australia in 2004 and with it introduced a whole new spin on fun and fitness. Beach Tennis is a hybrid of tennis, beach volleyball and badminton adopting the basic traditional scoring of tennis and played with a lower compression tennis ball and paddle style of racquet. Paul saw the potential of beach tennis as an great outlet for fun with family and friends at the beach along with the vast health and fitness benefits as beach tennis is not only a great cardio workout, it is low impact on hips and knees and a fabulous sport for cross training. An innovative and ideal option for sports lovers looking for new things to try in the great outdoors. The 6th Australian International Beach Tennis Championships was held on January 27th – 29th and proved to be an amazing contest where men, women and children competed in singles, doubles and mixed events.
This feature for the Port Melbourne Precinct has been jointly funded by the Port Melbourne Business Association and the City of Port Phillip.
Beach Tennis Australia hosts twilight and social tournaments for all levels with equipment supplied. Join the Mixed Twilight Social League from 6pm til dusk on Wednesday nights or Saturday afternoon sessions from 3pm – 5.30pm starting this February. Everyone is welcome! Works Commence for Port Melbourne
Family & Children’s Centre A new state of the art family and children’s centre is to be built in Liardet St, Port Melbourne, following the go ahead from the Heritage Council. The Heritage Council confirmed in December that Lady Forster Kindergarten will not be placed on the State Heritage Register, removing the final obstacle in Council’s plans to construct the highly anticipated centre on that site. Lady Forster Kindergarten (LFK), has been temporarily relocated to Elwood Beach Community Centre and are operating as usual. Mayor Cr Rachel Powning said the decision by the Heritage Council was an early Christmas present for Port Phillip families.“Council is thrilled to have received the Heritage Council’s decision after a long wait. We have overcome this final hurdle and can now start building this critical family and children’s centre for our local families.”
• Sweep fans and cross ventilation • Double glazing on windows • Durable materials with environmental credentials • Energy efficient appliances The building has been designed to optimise the outdoor play area. Both APCCC and LFK will have access to large playgrounds, with more than double the amount of outdoor space per child required under government regulation. Please visit the website for further information: http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/liardet_st_ family_childrens_centre.htm
Works for demolition of the Family and Children’s Centre in Port Melbourne commenced on Monday16 January 2012 and Council will be pleased to see the completion of works in 2013.
