A merry lead up to what will undoubtedly be a busy, but exciting few weeks before the ‘big day’ arrives.
wonderful people that I have been in contact with over these months, and I eagerly look forward to what lies ahead for 2012!
I must admit, it has been both fantastic as well as fairly difficult in putting this special Christmas insert together. Fantastic as far as getting an insight into just how much is happening in the neighbourhood in the lead up to Christmas, but difficult from the perspective of having so many amazing events and brilliant gift ideas but just never enough space to include it all.
On behalf of our super team at MagMedia, I thank our readers and all our wonderful advertisers for your support. We wish you all the most amazing Christmas and may this New Year bring prosperity, peace and harmony to your homes, hearts and places of business.
The opportunity to work on our inserts for the past 6 months has been a highlight, I have learnt so much more about Docklands and its place in the bigger neighbourhood picture, I have discovered the amazing wealth of historic and present day significance of Port Melbourne, I have been astounded by the interactive and cohesive community of South Melbourne and I am constantly excited by how much is happening in marvellous Melbourne. I thank all the
no cross-promotions and no entrance fee. The Big Sing was created to allow anybody and everybody to get involved. The participants are the performers, with families, friends and locals forming the hundreds of carollers who wind their way through the back streets of Fitzroy, singing everything from Silent Night and the Twelve Days of Christmas, to Camptown Races and The Gambler. Best of all, musical talent is not required. Everyone is welcome, from the operatic soprano to the tuneless base, yes, even Meat Loaf is welcome to attend. The only pre-condition is good cheer.

It’s not the tune you’d usually expect to hear on Christmas Eve. But She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain has become the signature song of The Big Sing, Fitzroy’s typically eclectic response to Carols by Candlelight.
The Big Sing this year doesn’t get any better and is tuning up to take Christmas cheer to the streets of Fitzroy on Christmas Eve for, you guessed it, the 12th time! The unique nature of the event has helped it become an institution in Fitzroy. There are no celebrities trying to steal the show,
The Gertrude Players, the initiators and now chief supporters of The Big Sing, will again supply free carol books, and there is no charge for joining in. So, if you are yearning to step out of the shower and take you tonsils to the street, be sure not to miss The Big Sing 2011. When: Saturday, 24 December 2011 Where: Leaving 6pm sharp! from Whitlam Place (corner Napier and Moor Sts), Fitzroy Finishing at approx 8pm on the steps of the Fitzroy Town Hall, Napier St, Fitzroy

A wonderful Melbourne tradition will continue this festive season as Crown’s Christmas Spectacular, one of the most technologically advanced and largest automated Christmas attractions in the Southern Hemisphere. Recognised as one of the most spectacular displays at Christmas, Crown will again amaze guests by lighting up the grand Atrium with a giant Christmas tree suspended from the ceiling. This magical tree, over six stories high and wrapped top to bottom in silver foil, will be completed with surprise animatronic characters and presents that pop out and surprise guests to a narrated story line about a boy whose only wish for Christmas is to run away with the circus. Surrounding the Christmas tree amongst the Atrium’s many fountains will be a series of animated vignettes that come to life. A carousel of carnival animals, rope swinging monkeys, two enormous mountains of gloriously wrapped presents and a stunning ‘Big Top’ animatronic circus tent that theatrically
expands, revolves and opens up to reveal various vaudevillian style circus scenes. Crown’s Christmas Spectacular is one of the most enduring Christmas traditions in Australia. This unique and colourful sensory experience will captivate all present with the magic of Christmas attracting more than one million visitors over the festive season. The free animated spectacle will run until Sunday 1 January, 2012 with shows daily every 30 minutes from 10.00am until 12 midnight at the Atrium at Crown - 8 Whiteman Street, Southbank

September Exhibitions at Port Melbourne’s MARS Gallery Situated on Bay Street in Port Melbourne, [MARS] Melbourne Art Rooms (otherwise known as MARS Gallery) opened in February 2005 and has earned a reputation as one of Melbourne’s exciting and diverse commercial art spaces. MARS has proudly exhibited over 132 shows, shown around 170 artists including group and solo shows. The everyday activity of the gallery is to showcase monthly over two floors a cross-section of local and interstate, Australian contemporary artists working in a broad spectrum of diverse media. This month, an exhibition of artworks from Bronek Kozka and John Scurry are displayed. In Bronek Kozka more recent work there is a central theme that runs through; memory and remembered moments. In this exhibition, this theme continues. “The installation aspects of this exhibition actively engage the viewer by exposing them to a scene for a split second then challenging them to hold on to the memory. The vision, which inevitably disappears from their view
and minds eye is a metaphor for a lost memory, it vanishes almost like a dream just after waking. My images are best described as carefully constructed tableaus, they are cast with actors playing their various roles, propped and lit, every detail is considered and controlled” said Kozka. John Scurry paints from everyday life. Often devoid of human presence, his scenes show lived-in environments, which suggest an elusive and intriguing narrative. Viewers of his works may sense that a protagonist or the artist himself has fled the scene midway through some sort of chaotic artistic or domestic activity. Accumulated clutter, wilting flowers and plants, plastic bags and the detritus of human existence are all celebrated by this important Australian artist. View these works during September at MARS Gallery 418 Bay St, Port Melbourne Open 10am - 5pm, Tues - Sun www.marsgallery.com.au
