Docklands SoundWalk Tune into local history by taking a ‘sound walk’ around Docklands with your mobile, some headphones and comfortable shoes. Sound designer Gerald Mair was walking through the city streets with his headphones on, lost in his own world, when he first had the idea for a ‘sound walk’ through Docklands. ‘Rather than people putting on their headphones to zone out of the area, I wanted them to zone in, to make people aware of their surrounds, more appreciative of place,’ Gerald Mair said.

The first of its kind in Australia, the Docklands SoundWalk asks people to grab a set of headphones and their smart phone, and follow a route through Docklands, scanning QR (quick response) codes at key locations to download each new episode. ‘There are some surprising spaces - like the Reed Bridge in Docklands Park, tranquil little moments to discover along the way,’ Gerald said. Supported by the City of Melbourne through a Docklands Arts Grant, Gerald

spent six months sounding out the history of Docklands and working on fictionalised stories, ambient soundscapes and short narratives about the area. Future Melbourne (People and Creative City) Committee Chair, Councillor Jennifer Kanis said creative explorations such as the Docklands SoundWalk help us to understand our city in a new way. ‘Innovative storytelling like this shows us where we have come from, helps us to celebrate where we are going and gives us the space to see just how much the city is

regenerating and transforming,’ Cr Kanis said. The starting point for SoundWalk is the corner of Docklands Hub on Harbour Esplanade and traverses 10 locations, ending up at New Quay Promenade near Waterfront City. For more information visit melbourne. vic.gov.au/whatson or www.docksoundwalk.org

Over the last five years, she headed up the external affairs activities for BP Solar, and played a key role delivering numerous policy reforms and government interventions for the company; some to the benefit of the solar industry in Australia. She is passionate about working with people and is absolutely thrilled to be

working at Committee for Melbourne as its new Chief Operating Officer. “Committee for Melbourne is a special organisation that has a unique role to play in contributing to how Melbourne can grow, without sacrificing its current appeal.

“Its beauty, diversity, arts culture, sporting madness, and yes, even its four seasons in one day makes Melbourne truly unique! I feel privileged to be working at the Committee and look forward to meeting and learning more about our members over the coming months.” Ms Gaffney added.

Following on from our past two issues regarding the status of the proposed New Quay Central proposal we asked Docklands Community Association President, Roger Gardner to comment on any further developments todate. 3008Docklands also contacted the Minister’s office and a written statement follows on after Mr Gardner’s update. ‘The public meeting held at Waterfront City on the evening of October 6 to protest against the proposed development by MAB Corporation and was attended by over 100 people from all over Docklands. The meeting unanimously condemned the proposed destruction of the purpose built public plaza to make way for a fifteen storey hotel. The big marquee would go too. The plaza is the only public square in Docklands, used by visitors and locals alike and contains a sound stage, outdoor TV and seating. It is used for concerts, vehicle

displays, charity events and markets to name a few. MAB Corporation is claiming it will install a ‘park’ behind the hotel. There is no way this would compensate for the loss of the plaza. The ‘park’ would be a shadowed strip with views of the harbour blocked by the hotel and with the narrow strip surrounded on four sides by roadways; Docklands Drive to the north and the other three sides by access lanes to the hotel for guest vehicles and taxis, buses, delivery and service vehicles. Other elements of the plan condemned are the cramming in of more high-rise buildings including an overshadowing 42 storey tower and lack of traffic planning, with significantly extra traffic but no more streets and lack of parking. These are common problems in Docklands as we well know. We are not at all impressed with VicUrban’s part in this matter as they appear to have rubber stamped the plans.

Chairs of Owners Corporations of buildings in New Quay wrote to the Minister on October 25 requesting he veto the destruction of the plaza and erection of a hotel on the site and to review other elements detrimental to residents. The DCA has written a similar letter to the Minister. Importantly Council itself has written to the Planning Department criticising the MAB plans for non- compliance with the objectives of the Urban Design Framework and highly critical of various elements of the plans including positioning and height of additional buildings, wind effect problems, traffic problems and lack of parking. I have been included in a delegation on State planning issues to meet with the Planning Minister Matthew Guy on November 29, at which I will have the opportunity to speak on the above issues. Our concern is to make sure the Minister himself is aware of the

Update on New Quay Central Proposal issue and is fully informed. Obviously further development will take place but the plans need to be modified to cater for public and community amenity.’ Roger Gardner - Chair Arkley OC / President DCA To contact the DCA email: docklandscommunityassociation@gmail.com 3008Docklands contacted the Department of Planning and Community Development in late November and received the following statement: ‘The department has received a number of submissions concerning the proposed amended Development Plan for New Quay Central from members of the community, as well as comments from the City of Melbourne and Places Victoria. These comments and the amended Development Plan are currently with the department for consideration.’

Monster boost for Victorian Film industry as ‘I, Frankenstein’ comes to Docklands Shortly after a Screen Australia survey cast a dark shadow on the value of Victoria’s film and television productions, which fell by over 50% to $123 million in the last financial year, some good news was announced with Pirates of the Caribbean Australian screenwriter, Stuart Beattie’s ‘I, Frankenstein’ set to be filmed at Docklands Studios. The Victorian film and television sector will receive a huge economic boost with the office of State Innovation Minister, Louise Asher announcing the film, will ‘spend up to $37 million in Victoria and

employ about 500 local cast and crew’ working on the modern day gothic thriller. ‘I, Frankenstein’, which stars Aaron Eckhart of The Dark Knight fame, is written and will be directed by Beattie, who will carry out pre-production, filming and post-production in Melbourne. While locations in and around Melbourne are still being determined, the production of the film will be based primarily at Docklands. The film is based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux - the creator of the popular Underworld franchise.

Melbourne is renowned for its culinary excellence and cultural diversity, Oscars Table is reminiscent of the select niche of restaurants at the forefront of Melbourne’s dining scene that recognise that good food need not be pretentious and atmosphere is created, not contrived. Owners, Brett Thomas and Matt Walsh have lived and breathed Docklands and their latest offering in Oscars Table brings a refreshing and inviting take on relaxed dining amongst a sophisticated vibe to the stunning locale of NewQuay Promenade. The menu, under the expertise of Head Chef, Phong Nguyen is based on the principle of combining the freshest available produce together with quality meats and seafood to deliver a satisfying and enjoyable experience. The menu is a combination of share plates with main courses of lamb, Hopkins River Scotch Fillet, pork and seafood dishes with a wine list derived to suit. Oscars Table is about sharing experiences, and while the dining room caters for small intimate tables, a length of the venue main table in the bar area is intended to encourage diners to unwind and enjoy a fabulous, uncomplicated meal, whether that be rounds of share plates accompanied with a few drinks or a pop in for a fabulous New Zealand sourced Coffee Supreme. This new establishment aims to please and stamp its place amongst the best, and in turn do its part to promote Docklands as a sought after dining destination within inner Melbourne.

Safety concerns hail request for

DESIGNATED taxi rank on Harbour Esplanade As safety concerns mount, 3008Docklands asked Simon Digby, Director of Alumbra at Central Pier to elaborate on his observations and views as to why a designated taxi rank and passenger waiting area is necessary along Harbour Esplanade. Have there been any specific incidents which have prompted this call for a taxi rank or has this been an ongoing problem that has been further exacerbated since the road works / upgrades were made? We have been running our business here at Docklands for about 5 years. We see this as being an ongoing issue which, as you correctly state, has been exacerbated since the road works have been made. The upgrades do look better, especially the plantation of the trees along Harbour Esplanade, but there seem to be some issues which haven’t been addressed. The underlying problem is that there is no provision for a safe taxi rank on Harbour Esplanade. There are also only 2 spots for taxis to stop. Once these taxi spots are full, taxi’s then tend to stop traffic flow, as it’s only a one lane road since the upgrade. To avoid vehicles banking up, where should the taxi rank be situated?

Which authority should be responsible for implementing the taxi rank, Places Victoria or City of Melbourne?

{

3008docklands.com.au

After reviewing the traffic flow over a long period of time, what l think is a better solution to avoid taxi’s banking up and stopping traffic flow, is to convert the metered parking spots on Harbour Esplanade to a taxi rank after 6.30pm, 7 days a week. Also having a safe area where by people can wait for a taxi. This will avoid people crossing the road in a hurry to try and get a taxi on the other side of the road. There seems to be no system in place other than an allocation of 2 parking bays for taxis.

10

to departing Docklands during winter or on a windy day. It’s not a pleasant experience, which is one of the reasons why l think a safe taxi rank on Harbour Esplanade is a logical option for people to congregate when leaving our precinct.

Docklands Precinct. Between City of Melbourne and Places Victoria (formerly VicUrban) I am confident; with the right consultation with business operators and members of the local community we will achieve the ideal outcome.

Have you had any discussions with local authorities at this stage?

Is there anything else you would like to see done and what can the residential and business community do collectively to get things happening?

I was very active with VicUrban at the time of the redevelopment to try and implement some of these strategies during the construction phase. I am now seeking support from the local community and business operators so we can speak to the appropriate authorities and together come up with a better solution for people arriving and leaving the Docklands Precinct.

I think if there was an allowance for a safe taxi rank, as well as a better system for taxi’s on Harbour Esplanade, people will have a better experience coming to and leaving Docklands. By having these systems on Harbour Esplanade, we would get better support from the taxi drivers and could potentially create more incentive for them to come and pick up passengers from the precinct.

l personally would be happy to donate my time before Christmas to workshop some of my suggestions in more detail with the local community and then submit details on a plan of some of our suggestions. I think it’s crucial that we activate discussions before the end of the year to try and make progress before another cold winter at Docklands.

Would this proposal primarily benefit Alumbra, or is this an issue that is pertinent to other local businesses?

In my opinion, the local authorities have always tried to do the right thing for the

It is not my position to speak on behalf of any other business, however, I have no doubt that they would support such an initiative as it will benefit local business, the community and visitors to and from the Docklands Precinct. Alumbra has been trading for 9 years, 5 of those at the current Central Pier location, so as a business we are in a good position and have a loyal cliental. As a business operator that promotes the Docklands Precinct, l do find that there still seems to be some negative feedback on its amenities, or lack thereof.

DECEMBER ROAD CLOSURES AND CHANGES TO TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

This is something which l am trying to investigate. It seems for a period of time there, there was some confusion, but from my current findings l believe it is City of Melbourne which will be able to support the current amenity issue and try and resolve the safety issues that people are facing when visiting the Docklands.

What l can say is the business operators in the precinct would know from firsthand experience that there are some safety and amenity issues on Harbour Esplanade. There also seems to be no forethought when it comes

Works to deliver the Victoria Harbour Master Plan are well underway. Access to the public car park via Seafarer Lane - from 3rd December 2011, the entry and exit points to the existing public car park at the end of Bourke Street will be changed from Bourke Street to Seafarer Lane. Docklands families with primary school aged children face further uncertainty and will most likely be ushered into inner-north state primary schools as an over demand for placements at schools such as Port Melbourne Primary are over capacity, thereby necessitating catchment zones for student enrolments. By Lisa Quittner The Australian Philharmonic Orchestra has done what close to no other orchestra in the world has done - entertain, enthrall and enlighten audiences with their musical enchantment and extraordinary talent for 30 years. 3008 Docklands celebrates and congratulates the APO on this milestone achievement as celebrations will unfold through a harmonious musical journey concert series this December to mark the past 30 years of sensational music making. It is our privilege to again present the remarkable talent, of just one of the many stars that will shine in this year’s Philharmonic Phireworks at Melbourne’s Art’s Centre. T he brilliant and ever popular Melinda Schneider, along with the magnificent 72 piece Australian Philharmonic Orchestra is accompanied by opera-sensation Lucy Maunder, Phantom of the Opera lead Donald Cant, tenor extraordinaire James Egglestone and home town favourite, legendary Denis Walter, under the baton of award-winning international conductor Gavin Sutherland. The stars are truly aligned for an evening to kick off a New Year filled with Philharmonic Phireworks showcasing the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, West

Yes, it is, I have never worked with this wonderful orchestra before but I am really looking forward to it. We have 6 shows all up, 3 in Melbourne and 3 in Sydney. I have heard so many wonderful things about the concerts, so I think it is going to be just amazing. How did you become involved in the New Years Concerts with the APO, considering your recent national Doris Day Tribute shows, ‘Doris - So Much More Than the Girl Next Door’ as well as your latest album, ‘Life Begins at 40’ you have been extremely busy , why did you want to be part of this Philharmonic Phireworks concert series? They invited me to be part of the shows after seeing me in my Doris show which I was performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne, the organisers came to see the show and invited me to part of it. Also, my musical director Michael Harding, is the musical director for the APO as well, and I guess he put in a good word for me too. I absolutely jumped at the chance to be part of it, who wouldn’t want to be able to work with this 72 piece Australian Philharmonic Orchestra?! You have worked in so many different types of performance settings, how does working with a 72 piece orchestra compare? I have worked with big orchestras before doing Carols by Candlelight at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and at Carols in the Domain in Sydney, but never an orchestra

NEW YEAR’S EVE 2011

30th Years Young PHILHARMONICS PHIREWORKS CONCERT SPECTACULAR FEATURING MELINDA SCHNEIDER like this, this is just such a thrill, I think “thrilling” would be an understatement in describing it. Have you already decided on what you will be performing at the concert? We are doing my latest single, ‘Wish you were here’ which is from my ‘Life Begins at 40’ album, and it also happens to be in my Doris shows. I wrote that song, so I just can’t wait to hear it with the orchestra, it is just going to be amazing to perform something that I have written with that scale of orchestra. I am also doing a medley of Doris songs and a couple of duets, one with Lucy Maunder and one with Denis Walter. I really love doing duets. It is an incredible line up of some of Australia’s most favourite singers and musicians , and quite a combination of styles and songs spanning Strauss to Neil Diamond, Abba, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, will you all perform some songs together at the concerts? Yes, we will be doing a couple of songs where we are all involved which will be great, I love singing in groups and harmonising. It sounds like it is going to be a concert that is just full of absolute variety, there will be something on the night for everybody to enjoy. Do you have a New Year’s resolution or wish for 2012? Just to be pretty much the same as I am now, I am in a really happy place, I am really content in my life and at peace and if that continues I will be absolutely thrilled! This is not a concert to be missed, celebrate this incredible 30 year milestone with the APO, see their ad for further details and celebrate a home-grown treasure! Congratulations to the APO!

By Tom Elliott For several decades now, the Australian economy has been conspicuous by its duopolistic industry structures. For various reasons, both historical and legislative, we’ve had two airlines (not always the same ones), two breweries (now both foreign owned), at best two newspapers (in Sydney and Melbourne, at least) and two major supermarket chains.

With respect to the supermarket industry, Australians have in recent times been pretty well served. Most of us live not too far from a Coles or Woolworths store, many of us enjoy frequent buyer benefits like Fly-Buys and the ubiquitous 4 cents per litre shopper dockets have become a staple of petrol buying behavior. Recently, the two large aforementioned supermarket chains have been butting their heads together like rutting reindeer in an effort to gain market share. Product categories like milk, bread, cooking oil, breakfast cereal, biscuits and alcohol have seen two overtly favourable developments: First, prices have been reduced - and in some categories like milk, substantially so; and Second, as is common in the UK, both Coles

Victoria Harbour’s latest residential offering is receiving strong interest Lend Lease’s Convesso Concavo is the latest in a line of commercial and residential projects adding panache to Melbourne’s Victoria Harbour Precinct while offering Melbournians a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to live on prime waterfront with an enviable proximity to Melbourne’s bustling CBD. Victoria Harbour and the wider Docklands area has transformed over the past fifteen years, from the humble home of Victoria’s first port to the dynamic residential and recreational hub it is today.

Lend Lease General Manager for Apartments, Ben Coughlan said Melbournians have embraced inner city waterside living and the opportunity to own a piece of Melbourne’s heritage.“Buyers have been quick to snap up this unique offering that takes full advantage of the location and brings together lifestyle, convenience, elegance and the waterfront. We have sold more than 85 per cent of Convesso apartments and Concavo is following suit with a high level of interest since officially going to market in late October,” said Mr Coughlan.

and Woolies have increased substantially the range of house brand products they offer to the public. House brands in Australia have come a long way since the cheap-as-chips ‘Black And Gold’ type labels common in the past. Thanks to example shown by the pioneering Tesco chain of supermarkets in the UK, local consumers can now purchase a wide range of high quality staples at reasonable prices. But will these reinvigourated home brands kill off independent brands? Recently the multinational Heinz Corporation complained that pressure from both Coles and Woolies had forced it to scale back production of sauces in Australia. And many milk processors are growing increasingly concerned that brands like Pura and Rev may Inspired by the reflection of light on water, the cutting edge design is the work of renowned architect Bates Smart. There are a variety of living options available with marina, tower, city side and wharf side apartments on offer with the addition of three penthouses, all designed to maximise views over Victoria Harbour. High quality finishes and bespoke detailing set a new benchmark in luxury waterside city living. Are Cheaper Supermarket Prices Really A Good Thing?

In the short run, Australian consumers will do extremely well from the desire of Coles and Woolies to both compete with each other and promote their own brands. In the longer term, however, the damage such behavior will cause to the independents might just leave consumers somewhat shortchanged. Mr Coughlan said the luxury residential offering is attracting a range of buyers from empty nesters looking to downsize to investors. Convesso prices range from $465,000 to just over $5 million, whilst Concavo prices range from $495,000 to more than $3 million. Visit www.convesso-concavo.com.au for more information.

DOCKLANDS GROWTH The A, B, C, D’s TO MELBOURNE’S 1 MILLION of Financial Freedom ADD SQUARE METRE OFFICE SPACE TARGET By Andrew Hewison

I was recently contacted by a close friend of mine who put me in touch with his sister and brother-in-law for advice on their financial situation. I know the family well, they have two young children and like many families dealing with financial pressures, on the surface they seemed to be coping, but in reality it seems they had found themselves trapped in some serious debt. The pinnacle of their financial hardship was that in order to complete some renovations on their house, the couple had amassed credit card debts of around $60,000 for which they now were struggling to repay. Their story, like so many, is a sobering reminder that some of the basic financial concepts that many of us take for granted are still foreign concepts to many individuals trying to get ahead. And yet the foundations of financial literacy, such as the importance of maintaining a budget and the power of compounding interest over time, is being taught in schools well after our children are taught long division and Pythagoras theorem - bizarre isn’t it? However, none of us are immune from falling into the debt trap at some stage in our lives so here are a few ways you can rebuild your wealth and relieve financial pressure - know your A.B.C.Ds of financial freedom:

A. Run your household like a business. Operate a budget to ensure more money comes in, than goes out, or at least that they net each other off. B. Do not spend what you do not have. If you know your credit card cannot be cleared at the end of the month, cut it in half! C. If you want something, such as a nonessential item, work out a savings plan to buy it once the money is in the bank. D. To get ahead financially, you must spend less than you earn. If you are determined to do so, it’s time to begin setting some goals- like everything else in life. Determine how much of the mortgage you want to pay off in a year, or how much money you want in the bank and begin making adjustments in your budget to ensure you get there. The above steps take one key ingredient, discipline. This is perhaps the hardest behaviour to instil and often not until people are faced with the consequences that they wish they had their time again. Christmas is a time of the year when budgets blow out and the credit card cops a battering. Never more so is it vital to follow the A, B, C, Ds of financial freedom. On completion of the current Docklands constructions of the ATO, Marsh Mercer Tower as part of the 185,000 square metre Collins Square project, along with the new headquarters for Melbourne Water, NAB’s second Docklands building at 720 Bourke Street and the Aurecon building at 850 Collins Street, Melbourne’s thriving fringe office market is expected to reach 1 million square metres of A-Grade office space within the next few years. In addition, MAB Corp, Charter Hall and Flagship’s new projects will also boost this estimation according to research by Savills. The Melbourne fringe office market incorporates Docklands, Southbank, East Melbourne and the St Kilda Road precinct which, according to an article by Larry Schlesinger, was the busiest office leasing market in the second quarter of the year. At the current rate it is anticipated that by 2015, Melbourne will surpass Sydney with the largest central office market nationally. Schlesinger quotes Savills Australia national head of research Tony

Crabb, who adds the 1 million square metres milestone is a “testament to the attraction that Melbourne’s office market generally has for local, interstate and international businesses”. Crabb attributes the availability of development sites that have facilitated the construction of “modern, campusstyle buildings”. “These sites have and continue to assist the growth of the fringe market with relevant, modern accommodation which is both affordable and accessible. They have also allowed businesses to upgrade and consolidate into a location offering access to the best available amenity, which are, these days, pretty much essential requirements in the quest to attract and retain quality staff.’’ Melbourne’s recently awarded most livable city in the world label along with the nation’s largest container port, accessible airport and solid road transport infrastructure have contributed to Melbourne CBD and fringe area office space demand. Docklands accommodates the headquarters for many of the country’s largest corporations including ANZ and NAB.

2012 Australian Open

By Lisa Quittner Jarmila Gajdosova was introduced to tennis at just seven years of age, at a local tennis club in Bratislava, Slovakia. Seven years later Jarmila had fallen in love with Australia on her first trip as a 14-year-old junior player. By 2007, Jarmila was playing officially for Australia and in 2009 became an Australian citizen, living in Melbourne.

year alone you have succeeded to win matches against several top 10 seeded players. What are you expecting from yourself in the upcoming Australian Open? I have improved a lot and I hope to improve more, I need to get a good start to the year in the Hoffman Cup and do well against some tough players. Over the past three years, the Australian Open hasn’t been great for me, unfortunately I have had a ‘monkey on my

hopefully I can do really well and make them proud. Is it difficult to represent a new country and not your country of origin, Slovakia? Obviously it wasn’t an easy decision to leave my country of birth, my parents and my whole family are still there. I was born Slovakian and nothing will change that. I left when I was quite young and it has been difficult, of course, but I have spent so much time here now. I know there are some people that think I left Slovakia because I didn’t like my country or I couldn’t play tennis there or some other made up reason, but in the end, I came here as a 14 year old and I saw the beaches and the lifestyle and I could see myself spending the rest of my life here, bringing up a family and retiring here.

The 2012 Australian Open The only way is up for Jarmila Gajdosova With her career on the up and up on the international pro tennis circuit, Jarmila looks to the 2012 Australian Open with great anticipation, hoping to break a three year spell that has seen her hopes dashed previously in the first round. 3008 chatted to Australia’s number 2 women’s singles player, who is determined to get the “monkey off her back” this January. What is involved in your preparation for a tournament like the Australian Open, have you started training as yet?

Your world ranking seems to be improving steadily with age and you are only 24, this

{

3008docklands.com.au

I started in early November, not hitting or anything but working on my fitness for a few weeks before I start training on the court around early December. I do a lot of running and foot work, some weights in the gym to keep me strong, but generally varied exercise for fitness until I begin more specific training for moving on court to make sure I am fast enough and have the stamina to play long matches. It’s important to have a good endurance and strength base before I even start hitting the ball.

20

back’ but hopefully with the right preparation this year I will break that cycle and win my first round and just keep going on from there. Are there certain players you especially enjoy playing against? I enjoy playing against most other players; we all bring something different to the court which keeps every match exciting to play. Do you have a professional rival on the court? I have played Caroline Wozniacki about four times this year and also Na Li, I just seem to keep coming up against them in matches. You are second behind Sam Stosur in the top 10 best female singles Australian tennis players, since becoming an Australian citizen in 2009, what does the Australian Open now represent for you? Australia has been my home for the past 3 years and I always enjoy coming back to play and train here, this is the place I look forward to coming home to and where I am happy, so when I get to play in the Australian Open, in front of an Australian crowd and accepted as an Australian, it makes me really proud. With the support of the crowd there to watch me,

My decision to come to Australia was based on my future, not anything to do with not being proud of my country or anything to do with tennis. Which tennis players past or present inspire you most and why? I would say Monica Seles, when I was younger she was the first player I really followed and watched on TV and I really enjoyed watching her play and her style and how she was as a person and an athlete. I believe your family have all been involved in professional sports and your older brother Jan, was a professional skier - what do think is in the mind set of a champion? I think you have to have a strong sense of self belief in your ability as an athlete and to be prepared to do the hard work through the good and bad times. You have to believe that you have the talent and you can get to where you want to go. If you are not prepared to really push yourself you’ll never know what you can achieve. I would say self belief and determination is key to achieve your dreams. You were a former top ranked junior player with ITF junior rankings of No. 6 (singles) and No. 3 (doubles) in 2003, what have been the highlights and the challenges for you in making the transition into professional tennis?

As far as highlights, I am 24 years old and I have travelled the world and I get paid to do what I love. I have experienced so many cultures and met so many people on this amazing journey. Being away from my family has been the greatest challenge; I have spent a lot of time away from my parents. I didn’t have a normal teenage life and my parents weren’t there always to tell me who to date or not to go out, or the usual parent / teenager things. I didn’t do the normal teenage things either, I haven’t been to concerts and I have never been drunk. I have a really great life, if I could add my family and the people I care about to that and get back the times spent apart from them again it would be just great! Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Well, I will be 29 years old so hopefully I will still be healthy and playing tennis well and still enjoying what I do and, who knows, maybe I’ll have a family and a nice house on the beach ...enjoying the lifestyle! How to make 2012 your best year ever By Nicole Hutcheson - Kinesiology Practitioner & Instructor It’s amazing to think that we are at that time of year already! Christmas will be upon us in just a few weeks, and New Year’s Eve is not too far behind. So as our thoughts turn towards 2012, it’s a great time to start thinking about what we are looking to achieve in the New Year. I’m sure we have all made New Year’s resolutions in the past. We start off with the best intentions, but after a while seem to lose momentum and our old habits start to creep back in. So why don’t New Year’s Resolutions work? Often it’s because they are not specific enough for you to keep inspired and motivated. This is where the art of Goal setting comes into play. In order to set a really good goal, it needs to be SMART. That is Specific, Measurable, Action-based, Realistic, and Time orientated.

“I’m going to lose weight” or “I’m going to quit smoking” are smart ideas, but not SMART goals. They don’t tell you where to start or what to do next. They are also quite overwhelming and not very easy to accomplish as they are.

So once you have made your SMART goal, what next? In this case, the first step is simply to put on your runners and go for your first 45 minute walk. Then do it again tomorrow. If the action of your goal is simple and not overwhelming, it is more likely that you will stick to it and keep the momentum going until you achieve it.

A SMART goal would look more like “I’m going to walk for 45 minutes, 5 days per week, for the next 10 weeks, to lose 5kg to reach my goal weight of 65kg”. This goal is Specific. It tells you exactly what you need to do and what you are aiming for. In fact the more specific a goal is, the more powerful

Another way to keep motivated is to place reminders such as pictures of your desired outcome, or copies of your written goal in prominent places such as your desk, your bathroom or on your fridge. The more you keep these goals visible, the more likely you are to stick to them, and ultimately achieve them. I personally have my goals made into a 2 minute movie on my iPod, complete with pictures, words and music. I watch it a couple of times a day to keep me inspired, motivated and on track.

“In order to set a really good goal, it needs to be SMART. That is Specific, Measurable, Action-based, Realistic, and Time orientated.”

it becomes. It is Measurable - as in you can measure exactly where you are up to and you will easily know when you have achieved your goal. It is Action-based and gives you a sense of direction and what you need to do to achieve it. It is Realistic and Time orientated.

The DVD is a full 60 minute practice of what many of Nadine’s students call

Goal setting is a huge part of Kinesiology and something that I do with every client, every session. It is one of the most fundamental tools that I use in my clinic. So make 2012 your best and most successful, happy and prosperous year to date. Wishing all 3008 readers and their families a very Happy Festive Season. If you would like some advice with Goal setting for the New Year period, or would like some information about goal setting techniques mentioned, email nicole@chikinesiology.com.au

The best part about this movie technique is that I need to keep updating it every few months as I quickly achieve my goals and I need to set new ones. You don’t have to wait until New Year’s Eve to make new goals for yourself. Keep them small and manageable, and then build on them once they have been achieved. ‘Nadine Yoga’: breath focused, strong yet soft, and with her usual complement of inappropriate jokes. You will end your practice feeling strong, stretched, and serene. Perfect for cultivating a yogAttitude to the rest of your life!

without the all the anatomical jargon. It’s a useful resource for students and teachers and covers the basic structure of our bodies - bones and the muscles that move them. Symmetry, balance, and harmony in yoga practice.

WELL BEING

Holiday essentials this season By Tahlia Mandie - Psychotherapist & Family Counsellor I recently got back from a family holiday up north. I realized the importance of family time - spending time together, no work, no stress (other than what to eat for lunch and dinner), and no worries. A real break away from reality, to take time out for the things that matter family. The beach, the sun, more sun, more play... I could really get used to the lazy and relaxed atmosphere that was just so easy up north!

The holiday season is the time to relax, unwind, reenergize and re-group to the things that matter. Whether friends, family, time alone, unwinding with a book, it is about taking that time out. So my tips for this holiday season: 1. Don’t get bogged down with that huge list you have accumulated over the last year. Set special, dedicated time aside for the simple and important things that matter

3008’S BOOKSHELF book review by Rebecca Howden ‘The Sense of an Ending’ by Julian Barnes

Carefully distilled into a slim novella, Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending is a sombre and intriguing story that questions the reliability of memory and highlights the limits of self-knowledge. The winner of the 2011 Man Booker Prize, the exquisitely written book centres on the frustrating puzzle of “not getting it” the first time around, and having to revisit the past to make sense of the memories we construct ourselves. The novella opens with narrator Tony Webster’s recollections of his final years of boarding school in the 1960s. But it’s a new student, and new addition to his group of precocious friends, who is the

2. Do that little something you have been putting off for so long - whether it’s a massage, completing a book, or heading to the beach. Now is the time. 3. Just enjoy - Just be. Enjoy the simplicity and put all the distractions away for this moment in time. Ok, given, maybe some of this is easier said than done. Maybe doing everything on that list is the first thing that needs to happen to be able to relax and enjoy?

comes to an abrupt end, and Veronica soon starts going out with Adrian. Then, suddenly, at 22, Adrian commits suicide, leaving a note carefully outlining his philosophical decision to choose death over life.

real centre of the story. An academically gifted “truth-seeker” and lover of Camus who likes to say things like “that’s philosophically self evident,” Adrian Finn appears to his friends as a model of intellectual sophistication. When a fellow student hangs himself after getting his girlfriend pregnant, the boys are awednot particularly sympathetic, but rather fascinated by the questionable logic of his action. Adrian tells Tony that Camus maintained suicide was the only true philosophical question.

The second section of the book questions the veracity of everything we have just been told. Tony, now in his 60s and resigned to the ordinariness of his comfortable but unexceptional life, is forced to revisit his past when he receives a solicitor’s letter informing him that, inexplicably, he has been left Adrian’s diary in the will of Veronica’s mother. How she came into possession of it, and what secrets the diary might reveal, sets Tony on a mission to unravel the truth of the past he has so carefully edited in his own mind.

When the boys go off to different universities, Tony becomes involved with a girl called Veronica- prickly, snobbish and difficult, but brilliant and strangely magnetising. She challenges his intellectual arrogance and frustrates his sexual yearnings. Their relationship

He never gets his hands on the diary itself- Veronica refuses to give it up, repeatedly telling him, “You don’t get it. You never did.” Her refusal to explain the missing pieces of the story is infuriating even to read, and it’s easy to share in

But simplicity is simple and we all need to give ourselves permission. You deserve it! Tahlia puts a little bit of sweetener into all things about life, parenting and family matters @ www.theparentingfiles.com.au and www.directionexploring.com.au. Why not send your questions and thoughts through as well... tahliamandie@gmail.com

Tony’s increasingly frustrated obsession with figuring it out. The answer, when it is finally revealed, almost forces you to read the book again, to look for clues along the way. The Sense of an Ending is a haunting little book, difficult to put down and harder to stop thinking about. It brings to life an axiom of the human mind - as Tony says, “When we are young, we invent different futures for ourselves; when we are old, we invent different pasts for others.”

SHORT STORY

MADEMOISELLE MISTRALLE’S GIFT

{

3008docklands.com.au

I heard the car door slam and rushed to greet her. “Hiya Tiger,” she leaned down tiredly to scratch me behind the ears. I’d be doing cartwheels if I wasn’t so dignified. “Purrrnyao” I answered. That’s my name for my special human, although her mother calls her Monique and friends Niq. “How was your day? Sitting around, were you? Having a nice nap?” “Miaow, purrny, grrmyeau, meaoow,” I explained, following her to the shower. I really wish she understood how busy I am all day: maintaining my hunting skills, keeping the birds in line, spiders and vermin out of the house, catching up with the neighbourhood gossip... Sometimes there are not enough hours in a day. But let me introduce myself. She calls me Tiger - it’s a bit of a joke between us since I’m mostly black, with elegant white markings around my mouth and long, white, graceful boots. My real name, though, is Mademoiselle Mistralle des Chats Noir et Blanc de Nimes. I’m descended from a long line of Southern French aristocracy. When Purrrnyao (or Niq) came into the Cat Protection Society all those years ago, I knew. She was purrfect, the one I was meant to share my catnaps with. I sat up straight, and looked her in the eye; the others were acting silly, like chocolate-box kittens, but we were made of sterner stuff, she and I. Since then we’ve been through a lot together, especially during her fire fighter’s training. I remember she’d come home after dark totally exhausted and I’d knead her legs to make her feel better. I’d curl up in her lap and purr as strongly as I could to give her thighs a warm, gentle massage. I even tried curling around her neck and purring hard to massage her shoulders, but fell off. Purrrnyao’s so brave and selfless. She instinctively concerns herself with others before herself. Just last week, she came home after 18 hours of fighting a big furniture factory fire, completely worn out. What was her first concern? Me. She worried about me first. Likewise, I worried about her. Through the catvine, I’d learned that she’d entered the burning building to save not only Lou-Lou and her three kittens, but also the two small humans who’d crept in there to play with them. She’ll be up for a bravery award for that, I’m sure.

Others think she’s one tough lady, but I know her soft streak. We often sit up late, watching mushie movies and crying a boxful of tissues. Idyllic as this may sound, we do have one problem, and that’s Henri. Or should I say, Henri, with a French accent. He’s really French trash, descended from scum on the Marseille docks, but fakes being a gentleman. Though he’s tanned, buffed, dressed by advertisers, hair in the latest façon, he is one bad human. My tail swishes just thinking of him. He treats Purrrnyao despicably, undermines her confidence, cheats on her. I can smell other women when he visits. A few weeks ago, Purrrnyao picked a long blonde hair off his lapel (her hair is short and auburn), and you know what he said when she asked? “Oh now, mon petit choux, I was in a verry crrowded elevator earlier. You know ‘ow it is, non?” Her gaze had become fractured and uncertain, but she hid her pain. I walked over to him and the smell of the other woman confirmed he’s lying through his purrfectly capped teeth. Only last week they were going to a charity ball and my Purrrnyao donned a gown like copper flowing over her graceful body. She looked sensational. When she finished dressing, she did a little pirouette in front of me: “Well, Tiger, do you think I’ll pass muster in this?” but the look in her large eyes was anxious. Then Henri arrived. Though she looked like a super model, he just had to sneer: “Monique, ’ave you nossing else?” He looked down his rather large Gallic nose, a slight lift of the right nostril. Poor Purrrnyao; the bleakness in her eyes caught at my heart. So far I hadn’t warmed to this man, but now I was really beginning to go off him. With that, I managed to deposit a particularly juicy fur-ball right on his $500 Italian size nines. It was extremely satisfying. He panted with anger, face glistening with sweat, as he threw the expected tantrum. After cleaning up, he snapped: “Alors, zat will ‘ave to do. We are rrunning late, thanks to zat damned animal of yourrs,” and dragged a still pale Niq out. * Good news! The other night I met Mr Purrfect for my Purrrnyao. I was out ensuring all was

safe before bedtime and he jogged by. He looked at me, his gaze full of intelligence. We hit it off immediately as we ran together for a couple of blocks. He is magnificent, with large, smiling amber eyes, thick, short black hair and movement so graceful... Purrr. Providence. Never underestimate it. Yesterday, I was soothing my nerves on the back parcel tray, while driving home from the St Kilda Vet’s. I was taking a few licks, trying to restore my dignity after another appalling experience. Then unexpectedly my fur bristled with awareness. Mr Purrfect was driving behind us! He saw me and waved. I paced back and forth, swishing my tail in a quandary. What to do? What to do? “Miaouow! Yoouwwl! Miiiaoooouuuuw!” I screamed in my very loudest and most desperate voice. Purrrnyao braked abruptly turning towards me with an alarmed look. It was so sudden, I fell off the parcel tray onto the back seat. He was too close and crashed into the back of us. Success! Mr Purrfect was there, as Purrrnyao got out of our car. When he saw her, he smiled with his whole body. Dazzling! Meanwhile, in the back seat, I was the picture of the quintessential feline. Studiously, I licked my left paw. “Are you okay? Hi, my name’s Andrew, Andrew Chattom,” he said and held out his hand. “Sorry about running into you like that. I didn’t expect you to brake so suddenly. Doesn’t look like there’s too much damage to your car,” he continued as he held her hand, his liquid eyes melding with hers. “Luckily.” “Hello, er… Mr Chattom. I’m fine, er, Niq… Niq South,” she replied, extending a lightly shaking hand. “Look, let’s pull the cars off the road and sort this out,” my ever-practical and clever Purrrnyao said. I was somewhat amused as a faint plume of steam escaped his radiator. They stood there, eyes making a million promises. Finally, he said: “Niq, can I buy you a coffee by way of apology? I know I need something to steady my nerves.” “Oh, I can’t. I’ve got Tiger in the car.” A look of confusion came over Andrew’s face. “Tiger?” “Yes, my cat. She’s just been to the vet.” On cue, I curled up and fell fast, ahem, asleep.

by Rose Mercer “Oh look, she’s asleep. She’ll be fine for half an hour; just leave the windows open a little. We can keep an eye on the cars from this corner café.” While they settled at a table, I squeezed through the gap in the side window and slipped secretly under their table. “I’ll bet you’re the strong cappuccino type,” he said. Careful, pal, don’t overdo it. She nodded, glowing. “So Andrew, what do you do when you’re not crashing into cars?” Smiling, Purrrnyao was fiddling nervously with the cutlery, as she does when something is important to her. “I’m a futurist.” “A what? What does that mean?” “I help people create their preferred future so they achieve what they desire.” “But surely the future is something that happens to us.” “Not exclusively. Much of it is unpredictable but there are aspects which are knowable if we take time to look. But enough about me. What about you? What did you choose to do with your life?” “I’m a fire fighter.” She looked down not at all sure of his reaction. His eyebrows rose slightly, enthralled. That surprised her. She never appreciates how exceptional she is. Far too good for that cochon, Henri. “You realise, Niq, we do the same sort of work - we both help people.” Andrew leaned towards her. Purrrnyao laughed and relaxed back in her seat. She looked radiant. I knew he was the man for her! Purrrnyao and Andrew, heads together, appeared lost in a new world of their own. Our future was finally on course, thanks to me. All this work made me quite weary, so I slunk back to our car. One last all-over-body stretch and a glance out the window before dreamland. The background hum of traffic vied with the intermittent song of birds. Purrr... What a satisfying day.
