HEAD OUT ON THE HIGHWAY... When it comes to mid year during an especially cold and wet winter in Melbourne, a little weekend or day trip away from home may just be what the doctor ordered. For fear of using more clichés, we thought that perhaps we should offer a ‘change of scenery’ and take a break ourselves from our usual insert magazine neighbouring postcode line up to offer a few Victorian destinations, which are relatively ‘close to home’ that you may be ready to ‘see in a different light’. I hear you - the cliché thing is getting annoying!

HISTORY IS STILL BEING M.A.D.E AT BALLARAT

This midyear insert was not intended to be a promo for Tourism Victoria but rather an opportunity to focus on a few regional areas that have an abundance of great winter activities. We are all increasingly time poor and with school holidays upon us, I couldn’t go past including a day or weekend trip to the Dandenong’s and Yarra Valley. Puffing Billy is a fantastic experience that all children and adults should experience. Capping the day

Ballarat is just over 100kms drive north-west of Melbourne. The people of Ballarat are known to fully celebrate their heritage, world class attractions and cosmopolitian city. Boasting artistic and cultural wealth derived from its historic rise as a humble mining settlement to a world famous city, Ballarat is synonymous with the discovery of gold in the mid19th century. Its stunning architecture, broad tree-lined streetscapes, cultivated gardens and bustling city centre make Ballarat a destination deserving of a winter escape. Recently opened in May, M.A.D.E is Australia’s newest museum and has already attracted more than 10,000 visitors through its doors. M.A.D.E’s foundations are the physical site of the Eureka Stockade and the spirit of the uprising. The role of the 1854 Eureka Stockade in shaping our nation has long been celebrated with local commemorations and memorials. M.A.D.E is designed to harness the profound Eureka story in the context of the 21st century.

off with Devonshire Tea or a winery detour is a perfect winter day-away experience close to Melbourne. Phillip Island is traditionally thought of as a summer destination, but whale and seal spotting is a winter must on the Island. Rumour has it that Piper Street in Kyneton is the place where the who’s who hang to get out of town and after a little research I can understand why, this is definitely a Victorian arts and culture hub that is well deserving of a weekend visit. Lastly, even ‘a change of scenery is like a holiday’ and I do believe this cliché is as true as it was originally intended, so take a break and enjoy a short winter escape!

Along with numerous other events on the calendar, M.A.D.E will host a special exhibition on-site in August showcasing the work of the soon-tobe-released cartoon collection ‘Dirt Files: A Decade of the Best Australian Political Cartoons’. Alongside this will be a special panel event with the creator Russ Raddcliffe. Russ has edited collections for some of Australia’s finest cartoonists including Alan Moir, Bruce Petty, Bill Leak, Matt Golding and Judy Horacek. More than just a cartoon collection, ‘Dirt Files’ is an interpretation of the key political movements and longerterm themes that have played out in foreign policy, war, the economy, social policy, refugees, industrial relations, the media and party politics.
