Why hello there! In this issue, I'm so excited to be showcasing the editorial shoots from the first Magnolia Rouge hosted workshop held in Queenstown, New Zealand earlier this year. With Jen Huang as lead photographer and several other talented vendors, we spent four fun days in this beautiful part of the world learning from each other, developing new business strategies and retraining our eyes to see things differently. Of course, wedding design is a very subjective topic, so there is no right or wrong when it comes to your style – you simply have to do what most feels like 'you'. And whilst aesthetics are lovely and all couples spend time ensuring the details are just so, it's important to pull yourself back when arguing about getting just the right shade of table linen and remember what it’s all about – the wedding is one day, your marriage is for life. Or, as one bride in this issue says: don't spend more time prepping for your wedding than your marriage. Also in this issue, we have some stunning real weddings to share; from the old world elegance of a stunning destination wedding in Rome to a homely Portuguese wedding, from a beautiful backyard affair in Portland, Oregon to the classic elegance of a Nantucket soiree. On top of this there are several stunning editorials to provide you with ideas for your own celebration. Enjoy!

Anastasiya and Christopher’s romance is truly an international one – the couple met when she spent a summer in the US, were engaged on a perfect rainy night in Norway, and chose an ancient villa in the Roman hills for their timelessly elegant wedding. Loved ones from all over the world joined them for a night that stayed true to their rich Russian, Norwegian and American heritages, and included a number of fun traditions. Cries of ‘Skål’, ‘Za Zdorovie’, ‘Cin-Cin’ and ‘Cheers’ echoed around the candlelit hall through heartfelt speeches, while guests alternately stamped their feet and clinked their glasses to demand the lovers kiss. It was a celebration of family, of love, and of life.

Christopher and I share a special love and connection to Rome and Castelli Romani. “Our ceremony took place in the Panini Gallery of the villa, decorated with gorgeous frescoes, and an abundance of candles and lush flowers by the ‘altar’. I sneaked into the gallery when the string quartet was warming up before the wedding and stood there in awe, watching the twilight gently filling the space and listening to my processional.”

They say home is where the heart is, and that couldn’t be more true for wedding photographers Elsa and Rui. It was in their new home, when Elsa was pregnant with their beautiful daughter, Beatriz, that Rui proposed by painting ‘I will love you always! Will you marry me?’ on one of the walls. Home was part of their wedding day too – the couple created a cosy
environment with comfy furnishings, plush fabrics, and a bright, colourful palette, so guests felt as if they were at a relaxed dinner with friends. It’s no wonder they’re still talking about it! And it’s no wonder that today pieces of Elsa and Rui’s wedding stationery still adorn their walls, bringing the story full circle, and two hearts home.

Anna and Collin's love story began at Oregon State University, where the two cultivated a close friendship before it blossomed into something more. On Anna's official last day of college, her sweetheart took her to the Portland Rose Garden, and with a heating lamp in place to warm her up against the December cold, he got down on one knee. The months of planning that followed included endless trips to

Portland's goodwill shops by Anna's mother to find the gold candleholders she craved for the tables, as well as sprucing up by Collin's parents of their stunning property, where the wedding would take place. There, under the maroon trees that inspired their florals, with 900 feet of twinkling lights strategically placed among them, the couple celebrated their union with the people they love most.

"Our favourite moment was when we got to stand on the driveway while receiving toasts from our best friends, brother, dads, and a spontaneous one from our flower girl. The night was warm, the lights perfectly lit up the yard as everyone was sitting at their tables." 79

It might not have been a case of love at first stroke when Kate and Jamie met on the water as coxswains for their university rowing teams, but it didn’t take long for their boathouse friendship to turn to romance. After Jamie proposed on the ski slopes with his grandmother’s ring, the couple started planning a waterside wedding, inspired by the natural beauty of Nantucket in the autumn. Lush eucalyptus and lavender garlands draped archways and railings from church to
reception, where guests enjoyed sea-view cocktails on the lanternlit lawns of The Wauwinet, before sitting down to dinner at tables resplendent with verdant greens, mercury glass, candles and white roses. Kate’s gown was just as luxuriant – her brother Jeff Todd, a designer for Calvin Klein, created an incredible couture dress for her, hand sewing over 150 individual vintage lace flowers into the seven layers of organza and tulle over five months of design and creation.

“Taking pictures alone with our photographer, Clayton Austin, by an abandoned boat during cocktail hour, we were able to look back on the party and hear our friends and family laughing and the music from our band drifting into the night. It was special to take that time alone to appreciate each other and the details we put into planning this special weekend with family and friends.�

There are some days in New York when the skies are softly lit and Central Park is at it's finest. A myriad of greens sets the backdrop for crisp morning air leading our bride through her favourite parts of the vast park. The solid stone structures of Bethesda Terrace set the foundation for a formal ceremony with a cathedral veil only to be warmed by a touch of candlelight. A small quarry along the water with vast views of New York City juxtaposed to a nearby inlet for our bride to forage + enjoy small flowers still in bloom. Finally, the Ramble, a notable structure in the park with a hand-laid stone archway surrounded by stones + texture among the trees. To honor our model's Colombian heritage, she traditionally wears her wedding ring on her right hand. M A N D Y ,

Katherine and Adam Nowak were clearly destined to meet – they’d had a series of near misses over the years, including a party Katherine threw that Adam attended! But it wasn’t until both had moved to New York that the timing was right and the grand introduction was made. One snowy night, after a few blissful years together, Adam proposed in Washington Square Park, and the two city dwellers started planning a country wedding in Wisconsin. Inspired by the incredible natural beauty of the location, with its aspen trees, green fields and majestic mountains, they opted

for a rustic, elegant style that felt sophisticated, yet natural. Florist Sarah Jane of Lily and Co. created wandering floral displays across the wooden tables, with topiaries, kumquats and terracotta pots. The focal points of Katherine’s bouquet were peonies and garden roses, treasured favourites of her late mother. Another family touch was the inclusion of a tradition to honour Adam’s Polish heritage, where the couple’s parents presented them with a loaf of bread to symbolise always having food on the table, and salt, that they will always enjoy the spice of life.

“We knew in our hearts if anything didn’t go quite as planned it was because of something we literally could not control. That mentality allowed us to truly enjoy the weekend and not worry about the details. It was all about the love we felt and the fun we had together and with our friends and family.”

“Our ceremony was incredibly special to us. We laughed, we cried, we felt my mom’s presence through a rather loud breeze in the aspen grove, one of my best friends sang ‘Make You Feel My Love’, and most important: we got married!”

Despite already sharing friends and an Alma Mater, it was a chance encounter at a coffee shop that finally brought Kristen and Jason Bowyer together. A magical first date ended with a waltz in the rain on a country hilltop, and from the first kiss, both of them knew they’d found their ‘One’. Four months later, on that same hilltop, Jason asked Kristen to be his wife. The couple, together with a host of family and friends, planned a
wedding that combined their bohemian and vintage styles perfectly, resulting in a Gatsby boho garden fairytale, filled with succulents, stargazer lilies, music, and love. Kristen wore a Sottero & Midgley embroidered gold lace dress; Jason looked as if he’d stepped from the pages of a 1920s magazine. Once the personal vows had been exchanged, the couple took to the dancefloor for another waltz – this time as man and wife.

“In this day and age, there is so much pressure to be unique. While that’s all good and fine, do what makes you happy on your day. Clichés are ok. Doing something crazy and out there is ok too! Make it yours. Make it something that you both will look back on in awe and gratitude. Also, remember that years after the wedding, when no one but you looks at the photos and recalls the day, your marriage will be what remains. Make it good. Don’t spend more time prepping for your wedding than you do prepping for your marriage.”

“Trash the Dress shoots are becoming increasingly popular after a wedding, but I absolutely adored my gown, and couldn’t bear to see it ruined. An idea came to me: if it was becoming commonplace on these shoots to wear the same dress in a different location, perhaps I could wear a different dress in the same location? It seemed like a genius idea to me. Maleny holds so much sentimental value for Sam and I. We came here in our first few months together, spending hours playing chess and cosying up by the fireplace. Returned again on cheeky little weekends away. Watched my parents renew their vows here. And then,of couse, that heavenly day when we were wed at magnificent Maleny Manor. I decided a Trash the Dress shoot here, sans trashing the dress, would be the perfect close to our wedding album.”

They say with one hand you can conquer the world, but that can only happen in a marriage if you’re holding your other hand together. “My dad quoted the above on our wedding day. During the shoot, as Talitha fretted about me falling out of the tree and breaking my neck, Sam simply laughed and boosted me up into the branches. I saw so much truth in this quote, and I knew then, as I have somehow always known, that hand in hand, the two of us are going to have the most fulfilling, extraordinary life together.”

“With the Glass House Mountains as our drop-dead gorgeous backdrop, I chose a dress that I could climb trees in, one that I happily sat and pulled bunches of twigs from at the end of our three-hour shoot, as the sun went down. I also asked our photographer to take some photos of my actual wedding gown hanging in the trees, showcasing it in all its glory instead of capturing it in tatters! I fell in love with the end result. Some of the images are dynamic and spontaneous. Some are quirky. Others are romantic, thoughtful and soft. All capture the two of us exactly as we are: genuine, mad about each other, happy – above all else, just so darn happy.”
