Welcome! We've had a little spruce up around here... call it a spring cleaning of sorts, just in time for the

warmer weather to hit New Zealand. Trends are fast moving in this industry, and we like to keep things fresh and up to date! Speaking of fresh new things, I’m very excited that this issue will be available in a limited print run for the first time. This has been a little dream of mine for a while, and I’m thrilled to be working with the prestigious Richard Photo Lab to make it a reality. You may think that ‘romance’ seems like an obvious theme for a wedding magazine, but all too often we get caught up in the wedding planning - making sure the details are perfect, that you have the right shade of napkins to match your stationery, that the flowers you’ve loved since you were a little girl are in season, etc. - and the love and romance of the occasion get a little neglected. So we wanted to dedicate this issue to the sheer enchantment of weddings (although there are lots of pretty details to inspire, of course!). I am so thrilled to have the beautiful work of Jen Huang on the cover; it’s such a dreamy shoot and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to indulge a little and play dress ups in a tutu! We are showcasing so much talent in this issue with beautiful real weddings from the snowy mountains of New Zealand’s Southern Alps to the tropical shores of Bali and a three day celebration at a French Chateau. Beautiful styled shoots from the likes of Alexander James and Erich McVey take us on a journey around the world from the South of France to the stunning fjords of Norway with a few stops in between. Give in to the loveliness, and enjoy!

LA DY G R E Y The ever fashionable Summer Watkins of wedding blog Grey Likes Weddings joins us each issue to share her styling tips and advice.

HOW TO STYLE YOUR BRIDESMAIDS Almost any bride will tell you which wedding task ended up being the most time consuming and/or dramatic: choosing the bridesmaid dress. Oh the drama of picking a single dress for so many ladies! What’s worse is being on the receiving end — and feeling obligated to bite your tongue and wear a dress for your bestie that you’d otherwise never consider wearing in public. The ultimate solution is to let your maids (with gentle guidance of course!) choose their own dresses. Whilst this can be a daunting challenge on it’s own, we’re here to offer some styling tips for your maids that will make the process painless and tear free! I promise, women look much more fab and confident in dresses of their own choosing, so here’s how to make it happen:

Cast a vision

The first step to ensuring your bridesmaids understand your vision is to give them direction. You’ll want to tell them long or short, and ideal hues. But also, be sure to include the style of your wedding. Is it fun and casual or elegant and glam? This will help guide them toward an appropriate look.

Embrace difference

As a guest, it’s actually much more fun to watch different bridesmaids come down the aisle one at a time. Rather than judge how different each one looks in her dress, onlookers get to see how individual and uniquely beautiful your bridesmaids are. Plus, it looks better in photos! When all the dresses come together as a whole, the variety adds much more texture and interest to your images. So as a rule of thumb: don’t overstress their selections.

Stop obsessing over swatches

You cannot insist that all your maids find a dress in the exact same hue. The look is much more beautiful if they are each in complementary shades, so stop yourself from worrying so much about the exact color. My bridesmaids were given the task of finding a champagne or blush colour, but in the end, I had a few girls in tan and grey. It all worked beautifully!

Shop together

To help my bridesmaids find a dress, we let our fingers do the shopping! I found myself sending links via text or Skype and several of them ended up choosing dresses I had found, while the others better understood my sense of style and were able to find similar looks that better fit their bodies and personalities. Online is a great route because you can order one or two options, try them on, and return hassle free. One of my bridesmaids insisted I go shopping with her, and we bought a dress within an hour because we were shopping just for her! Other girls would text me images of themselves shopping to get my final approval! All in all, it was a fun experience to shop with my ladies — whether it was in person or virtual!

Bonus Tip This may sound a little scary, but because this worked out so well for our wedding, I recommend trying it. Because I didn’t care about the guys being in the Exact. Same. Suit. I gave them all direction instead: slim fit, black, white collared shirt (we provided the bow ties). A few of the fellas required a little guidance, and some asked me to shop with them. But rather than rent an ill-fitting suit (read: huge and baggy like I see at WAY too many weddings) the guys ended up with gorgeous suits that they’ll be able to wear again and again. Who cares if there are a few shades of black up there or if the lapels varied? I’d much rather have their suits fit! I’ve rarely see a better looking bunch of gents, so if it’s at all possible, do yourself a favour and eschew rentals!

Emily and Daniel's wedding was all about the personal touches and family traditions. Wanting their wedding day to celebrate both their love for each other and honour their family history, they got married in the same temple as the bride's parents had, making it special not just for the couple themselves, but their whole family. The icing on the cake was having Emily's 94-year old grandfather walk her down the aisle. A mountain laurel motif was also used throughout to honour Emily's late father, a horticulturalist, and guests received jars of her grandmother's apricot jam as a final send-off.

Memorable Moment “When Dan went to step on the glass at the end of our ceremony, he was afraid it wouldn’t break, so he stomped extremely hard. I thought he was going to break through the floor, which made the moment both hilarious and wonderful!”

Julie Song is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator based in the Bay Area in California. Working with a wide range of media, including ink, paint, and of course, the computer, she creates beautiful works of art.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS AND HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START? I had been practicing law for about five years around the time of my wedding. I was interested in doing some design on the side, so I figured I would put effort into the wedding paper as a start. When Style Me Pretty posted some of Jose’s Villas photos of the wedding, my inbox kinda blew up unexpectedly. So then a brief leave from my job to get a handle on it turned into a year... and here we are... still writing words for a living, but on a different kind of paper.

HAS THERE BEEN ONE DEFINING THING THAT’S BEEN CRITICAL TO YOUR SUCCESS? That Style Me Pretty post was pretty fateful. So the credit goes to people like Amy Kaneko Events and Jose Villa in making the wedding look like it did, and the power of the interwebs.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN CREATIVE? I guess so, in a really dorky way. Like I tried to slang hand-carved stamps to everyone in 6th grade.

ARE YOU REGIMENTED ABOUT KEEPING WORK HOURS OR ARE YOU CONSTANTLY WORKING? I remember the days I liked working until 2am or later... but like they say, having a LO forces you to be more efficient, and make time for important things like inventing ridiculous ways to make your baby laugh. I try to fight the workaholicism now :)

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Everything from my clients’ unique stories and interests, my niece’s drawings, looking at the weird foliage around in my neighborhood .

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR DOWN TIME? I used to love normal stuff like stalking new indie bands and watching dystopian movies with my husband, but now... baby :)

DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY: 5:30am - hear hungry baby wake for the hundredth time of the night. While feeding her, contemplate mum things like if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ok to put off changing her diaper so that everyone can sleep a few more minutes. Listen to her funny babbling for five minutes before I pick her up to play. Later when the nanny arrives, try to answer a few of the most urgent emails while feeling terribly guilty at the sea of bold, unanswered ones. Gather supplies for a new watercolor Save the Date and paint a couple versions of a huge tree. Toss the first because it looks both juvenile and creepy with too many big branches. Keep the second and sprinkle in some chipmunks around the trunk for good measure. In the afternoon, add hand-lettering to the Save the Date, prepare envelope mockups and send off the comps. Answer a few more urgent emails, then do baby things like preparing a bottle and clean a few of her billion toys, though I know sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just play with the packaging anyway. Turn to lettering project for corporate retail client, and furiously paint words for an hour until a few favorites emerge. Phone call with the printer to discuss specifics of next couple jobs, and send files. Coordinate with Italian paper supplier and nice Southern lady who is helping me make decorative plates. Evening - play with baby, declare her a genius for doing something or another, and eventually put her to sleep. Around 9:30, prepare myself for another action-packed night of baby-soothing, but sneak peeks at Instagram.

Stylist Katie from Unearthed Vintage incorporated sophisticated berry tones perfect for a wedding in the cooler months. Pairing rustic wood touches with more elegant pieces like the Wexford goblets and crystal chandelier, they bought in plenty of silver accents to complement the natural wood of the tables, and the dark, sultry floral design, and had long taper candles to create a romantic and intimate ambiance.

Katie& Paddy PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERICH MCVEY THREE DAYS IN THE DORDOGNE REGION OF FRANCE AT A BEAUTIFUL CHATEAU BECAME THE CELEBRATION OF A LIFETIME FOR THIS ENGLISH COUPLE. Katie was a little nervous about being the centre of attention as a bride, and for this reason always thought she would elope to a deserted beach one day. However, having realised that it’s all too infrequently in life that we take the time to celebrate, the couple started to see their wedding as a chance to toast not only their relationship, but everything they had achieved together, and their families and friends. From here, their vision grew, resulting in a three-day celebration at a beautiful French château. With thirty guests staying at the property for a weekend ‘mini break’, the holiday feeling was palpable, and the couple enjoyed the build-up almost as much as the big day. From Katie’s jubilant walk down the aisle (where she stopped to cuddle her granny and high five a friend) to the impromptu speeches and karaoke, it was a happy fête full of love and laughter.

“IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO PLAN A WEDDING THAT'S A REFLECTION OF 'YOU' AS YOU START A NEW LIFE TOGETHER. IMPRINTING YOURSELVES ON THE WEDDING, IN EXUBERANT WAYS AND OTHERS MORE UNDERSTATED, WILL MAKE IT FEEL COMFORTABLE AND RIGHT.”

Something old, something new: “I was adamant that I would not spend a vast sum of money on a dress that I would only wear once. I wanted a dress I could be relaxed, and have fun in. After much searching, I found a French Henrietta de Praag sample sale dress. Simple and fitted at the waist, with a sweetheart neckline and an A-line skirt, I felt like me in it and found a good taylor to shrink it to fit my petite frame. To add interest, I bought a second-hand Sassi Holford lace bolero on eBay. At the end of the night, there were wine stains all over my dress, but I didn’t care – I had had the time of my life!”

“Looking around at the guests who were still dancing in the early hours, I felt so much warmth, energy and a real joie de vivre.”

Something borrowed: “Pearl earrings from my beautiful cousin Charlotte.” Something blue: “We really wanted our wedding to be fun and happy, so we used the flowers to inject some colour. We chose lively pink, purple and blue flowers with a natural and ‘wild’ country feel and tied with brown string. The warm colours of the bouquets were a perfect contrast to the green bridesmaid dresses and, in lieu of a veil, flowers lined my hair (my something blue) for a simpler look.”

Talk about the Art of Happinessâ&#x20AC;Ś When colleagues Zun and Mark, both practising Buddhists, agreed to attend a talk in Toronto by the Dalai Lama together, little did they realise it was the start of the love and happiness they would find in each other. Three years later, Mark proposed on top of a mountain in St. Lucia, and the couple began planning an intimate family affair that would honour their mixed Sri Lanka, Burmese, Canadian and Buddhist heritages in the peaceful paradise surroundings of Bali. It was a calm, intimate day of blessings and beauty, combining their traditions and beliefs, with the most breathtaking backdrop imaginable. And which bride wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t love to wear four incredible dresses!

“Once we had selected Ubud in Bali as the location, it was easy to come up with inspiration as there is such a distinct look and feel – open-air villas, green paddy fields, intricate details and wood carvings, bright colours. With such a naturally beautiful venue, we kept the décor simple. The incredible villa staff made Balinese-style grass weavings, and we used white orchids and coconut flowers from the local market.”

“I woke at sunrise and stepped outside –

even though it was so early I could tell it was going to be a hot and sticky day. I remember smelling incense in the air, so green and luscious, and feeling completely content.”

“I wore several outfits to reflect our cultural backgrounds – Burmese Sri Lankan, Buddhist, Canadian – it was reflective of all the influences in my life. It was also a way for both our mothers to be involved in our wedding. Mark’s mom selected a cream and red Sri Lankan saree and my mom chose the gold Burmese longyi hand beaded by a seamstress in Myanmar.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAKE THOMAS ‘Interactive, detailed and wondrous’ is how Alice and Brad describe their big day, and with creative ideas like a charity raffle for the witness roles and a menu named after family members and made up of their favourite dishes, that’s exactly what it was. As a tribute to their first date (ice creams on the beach), the couple set up an Ice Cream Parlour for dessert, including loads of delicious toppings like homemade cookie dough and salted caramel sauce – a huge hit! Guests were also encouraged to fill out ‘wedding feedback cards’ as a fun alternative to the traditional guest book.

"As the bridesmaids and I were in ivory, I wanted the flowers to be a feature; we had hand-tied bouquets incorporating orange, peach and coral." “We wanted our wedding to have a relaxed, rustic, country feel and added retro, vintage elements. We hunted out a venue that felt like a barn and could seat 160 people – as Larcomb Events Centre seats 300 plus, it meant we could set up long tables with beautifully handmade recycled rimu bench seats. We spent time at vintage swap meets and second hand stores finding wooden crates, old board games, milk bottles, etc., then combined them with family wedding photos, tins, View-Masters… just about anything we loved! For our favours, my mum and dad made jars of blackberry and apple jelly – they grew the blackberries themselves, so it felt like a piece of my home.”

"Seeing each other for the first time for photos before the ceremony, and having that time together was just perfection. It was the calm before the storm, and I treasure those moments."

“After the speeches had finished, we had a projector play a same day edit video. In the middle of the film it cut to footage of my grandparents’ wedding in 1952 (which had been transferred from old reel to DVD). It was a massive effort for my grandparents to travel down for our big day, and I will never forget looking over and seeing the joy and surprise on their faces when they realised what they were seeing.”

Their engagement may have taken place on a sunny Bali beach, but for Hails and Darb, a winter wedding was always a priority. Guests were invited to their alpine home of Wanaka, New Zealand for a weekend on the slopes and a warming rustic wintery feast with open fires, mulled wine and a barn dance. Creative friends and family helped them

fashion some unique touches, including an old fence that Hayley and her sister turned into table names inspired by the aviation phonetic alphabet (a nod to Darby’s job as a helicopter pilot, which now hangs in the couple’s home as a very special piece of art). Candles lined the tables, producing a lovely warm glow, and the vibrant winter flower arrangements were made up of a mix of red, pink, peach and coral blooms. The gorgeous cake was a true family affair, designed by the bride, baked by her mother, then served alongside a selection of delicious desserts whipped up by Hayley’s aunts. She also carried a crystal necklace given to her by her grandmother, incorporated into the bouquet.

Hayley loved the idea of wearing boots and fur and polka dot tights for her winter wedding, and she had a few fixed ideas when it came to her dress. She visited Louise Anderson in Christchurch and fell in love with her Luci Dibella ready-to-wear gowns, and one in particular caught her eye. In a Cinderella moment, she tried it on and it fitted perfectly. Louise skilfully tweaked a few details, adding gorgeous beading to match Hayley’s veil and headpiece, and the bride-to-be had her dream dress!

It seemed like a twist of fate when Angela and Alexander met, and their romance culminated on Brooklyn Bridge, where Alexander and a few musical friends kicked off his proposal by singing Angela her favourite song. The creative couple chose New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic Metropolitan Building for their ceremony and reception, with the bride acting as planner, stylist and couture dressmaker to bring her wedding vision to life.

It was important to the fashion loving bride to share her passion with her loved ones, and this became a key inspiration for the wedding. Angela designed and made all the dresses herself. Her vision was romantic and ethereal, and her own dress was made using delicate silks, including the lightest silk gauze. Guests also got into the spirit, dressing up in their own take on vintage style.

Lauren & Cody PHOTOGRAPHY BY LANDON JACOB When engineer Cody proposed to designer Lauren during a trip to one of her favourite cities, Charleston, he was able to incorporate her love of fine art, history and family by getting down on one knee in an emotional moment outside the French Huguenot Church. These same loves drove the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wedding design, as they combined their talents to pull off a romantic and creative reception at the historical South Carolina State Museum, which once housed the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first electric-run mill. Guests were able to tour the exhibits during cocktail hour, before enjoying a charming reception filled with peonies and hand-drawn chalkboard details.

"We had the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen! I told our florist, Sarah of Fern Studio, that I love peonies, and wanted a variety of shades of pink, peach and coral. She did the rest. We had coral charm peonies that were the size of my head – I couldn’t believe it! Cody and his dad built a wall that we coated in chalkboard paint and I used as my canvas for our largest chalkboard sign, and our wonderful florist covered it with a garland of peonies. We also had several smaller chalkboard signs, also drenched with exquisite flowers."

"I purchased a letterpress a few years ago, and have been printing ever since, so I knew I would design and print our wedding invitations. I drew custom typography for each piece, and used a vintage botanical illustration from the 1950s as an envelope liner and to back two of the pieces (the third we backed with a walnut wood veneer). The cards were then tied together with a thin pink satin ribbon. I addressed each invitation with my own style of calligraphy, and sent them off. I was so happy with the way they turned out."

"Finding inspiration for this shoot was not difficult once we found our venue. We chose a Private Estate in Somis, California with gardens in full bloom. The soft colors and textures in the grounds were abundant and lent itself flawlessly to our vision: a color palette focused on black and gold with hints of pastels and natural wood tones. The ladies at Rockrose created the stunning arrangements that adorned the tables and graced the hands of our four models. With the use of some potted blooming plants, such as Lavatera, and the deep colors of the Scabiosa and Chocolate Cosmo, they were able to break the mold once again and create an elegant composition of garden fresh blooms that enhanced the already beautiful surroundings."

It was the venue itself that provided this couple with their inspiration. One of the most popular wedding venues in the area, Lemore Manor in the Herefordshire countryside offered them an informal and relaxed venue and Raku and Rod fell in love with the residence and its extensive surrounding gardens after their first visit. It proved the perfect place to have an extended weekend event with their family and friends.

"With the heroic help of one of my bridesmaids, and a lot of weekends spent in wedding dress shops, I finally found my dream dress. I loved that it was so soft and romantic. It is by a London based Nepalese Designer, Sanyukta Shrestha. The ladies at London Bride Couture on Churton Street were absolutely amazing as they helped me with all of the alterations and made it perfect for me."

"Lilies are my favourite so we had a lot of pink lilies along with pink roses with lots of minty green foliage. I had a bouquet of ivory flowers to complement my dress. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We made little favours of jam jars filled with love hearts, and had three cakes so that our parents could also cut a cake each, as a thank you from us."

Nina & Wes dreamt of going back to Norway to renew their vows on their tenth anniversary. “We envisioned saying “yes” to each other again in the middle of a beautiful field, surrounded by mountains, overlooking the sea and the fjords. When we arrived, we had no idea where we would have the ceremony. It wasn’t until the day before, that we saw a picture of some beautiful fjords. I just prayed that it would be that scene we had dreamed about. We drove up a mountain, and eventually found some private farmland. We snuck onto the farm with great anticipation. And then it happened… we got to the top of a hill and walked out into what seemed like a dream. We stepped into a field filled with yellow wild flowers. Behind us the mountain soared higher, with rays of sun beaming over top of it. And beyond the field, we looked out over the most beautiful view you could imagine… the breathtaking view of the fjords of Norway, and the beautiful waters that flow between them. From there, we found the farmer who owned the farm, and without any need for explanations, he waved his hand in the air, gesturing to us that we were free to have our ceremony there.”

A simple and rustic fruit tart is the perfect accompaniment to a casual afternoon gathered around the table with your girlfriends. Serve it up with some bubbly to make it extra special.

Blueberry - Blackberry Rustic Tart PASTRY 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup sugar 1/4 cup yellow cornmeal 2/3 cup cold butter, cubed 1/2 cup buttermilk

FILLING 4 cups fresh blueberries 2 cups fresh blackberries 2/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 beaten egg 2 tablespoons raw sugar Whipped cream, optional

In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar and cornmeal; cut in butter until crumbly. Gradually add buttermilk, tossing with a fork until dough holds together when pressed. Shape into a disk; wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 30 minutes or overnight. Preheat oven to 190째C. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough into a 35cm circle. Transfer to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine berries, sugar, flour and lemon juice; spoon over pastry to within 4 cm of edges. Fold pastry edge over filling, leaving center uncovered. Brush folded pastry with beaten egg; sprinkle with raw sugar. Bake 55-60 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Using parchment paper, slide tart onto a wire rack to cool. If desired, serve with whipped cream. Yield: 8 servings.

STRAWBERRY MILLE-FEUILLE

This gorgeous classic French pastry

is so simple anyone can make it.

This is a little bit of a cheat’s version, but when something is this easy and looks and tastes so lovely who are we to knock it?

1 packet Butter Puff Pastry

. 1 vanilla bean

Strawberries, sliced . 2 cups whipping cream 1 tbsp icing sugar . 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 cup pre-made Custard

Cut pastry into even sized rounds or rectangles. Bake as per pack instructions (for roughly about 10mins at 200°C) until golden and puffed up. When cool enough to touch squash the pastry flat with a baking tray. Scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean into the custard. Whip the cream with the icing sugar and vanilla extract. Add two big dollops of whipped cream to the custard and fold to combine. To assemble: Place a piece of pastry onto a serving plate, spoon on whipped cream and decorate with strawberry slices. Add a little more cream (to act as a glue) and place a second piece of pastry on top. Drizzle this with the custard and add more strawberries – add another little dollop of cream or custard and place the final layer of pastry on top. Dust with icing sugar and serve with extra strawberries.

delicious treat to wake up to on your wedding day.

Your favourite Granola or Cereal

Creamy full-fat greek yoghurt

Toasted almonds, flax and chia seeds .

Strawberries, diced

Mini jars for serving Sprinkle a layer of granola in the bottom of each jar and top with a good dollop of yoghurt. Add more granola and finally the diced strawberries. For extra goodness mix your granola with toasted almonds, flax seeds and chia seeds adding extra fibre, good fats and protein.

STRAWBERRY & ROSE DACQUOISE

a beautiful sponge-like almond meringue 85g icing sugar . 40g plain flour 6 egg whites . 80g caster sugar . 2 tsps rose-water Whipped cream and strawberries to serve

180g ground almonds .

Heat the oven to 175째C. Grease and line two 9-inch round baking tins with parchment paper. Whisk the ground almonds, icing sugar and flour together in a bowl. In a stand mixer, whisk the egg whites on medium speed until starting to turn white and foamy. Increase the speed and gradually add the caster sugar until completely combined, add rose water and continue beating until egg whites are stiff. Gently fold in the ground almond mix. Divide the mix evenly between the two tins, gently smoothing batter to the edges. Bake for 15mins or until pale golden. Once cooled gently peel away the parchment paper. Sandwich the dacquoise with whipped cream and diced strawberries.

Pile strawberries on top to serve.
