Those of you in the thick of wedding planning will know that it can be hard to see the forest for the trees. When your mind is occupied by the exact shade of green ink for your letterpress invitations, where you're going to seat your beloved cousin who is no longer talking to other family members, etc., you don't always take the time to appreciate what's ahead: your marriage. In the same way, within a marriage, it can be easy to get caught up in the day to day struggles, and not always appreciate the beauty of what you've built together. As I put this issue together, I'm heading towards my tenth wedding anniversary, and I've been trying to think of a way we can commemorate it that seems fitting for what I feel is really quite a big deal. After all, I'm rather proud of us - we did good! We're not big on grand gestures for these occasions and don't exchange extravagant gifts, but one thing I do love is cards. Writing them gives us a moment to stop, look around at what we have, and put what's in our hearts down on paper. Those words mean more to me than anything else. Remember to stop and find your own grateful moment - wherever and however that might be! I have to send a huge thank you out to Jose Villa and his team of talented vendors who put together the most beautiful cover shoot and consistently create magic on film. Of course this extends to every vendor who has contributed to the beautiful features in this issue. From a village wedding on the canals just outside of Amsterdam to a stunning South African safari wedding under the stars, the real weddings in here will inspire to no end. Until next time,

We found ourselves inspired by the sounds of the forest; the whiper
of the leaves and the rush of the river. Taking it all in, feeling the forest floor on bare feet and running the fingers
through the water. Out in nature is where we can best find
ourselves and easily loose ourselves at the same time. By the river.

After meeting through friends, Nathalia and Otto’s first official date was to a concert. So it’s only appropriate that ten happy years later, a concert was where things turned from Beyoncé to feyoncé – Otto proposed in the middle of the crowd during a live rendition of ‘Single Ladies’! And put a ring on it he did, at their laid-back rustic wedding in a village just outside Amsterdam.
The theme was bohemian with a touch of vintage, expressed through wildflowers on wooden picnic tables set with lace runners and vintage crockery, a barbeque dinner and a mismatched cake buffet. Instead of rings, the creative couple chose to exchange engraved watches, a nod to one’s punctual and the other’s tardy natures, and a symbol of their wish to be together, forever and always.

"Field flowers were the perfect choice. For the first look photographs we went to moorland near a forest in Hilversum. Our idea was to take the heath back to the venue so our guests could also enjoy the atmosphere. "

Most brides like to take on a DIY project or two for their weddings, but for Stephanie O’Laughlin, it was the wedding dress itself that became a labour of love. Not letting a lack of sewing experience stand in her way, Stephanie created a romantic plunge lace top and soft silk skirt combo – a reflection of the classic yet whimsical style of her wedding to husband Kevin, which took place in the beautiful box canyon town of Telluride in Colorado. The couple, who met in their younger years working at a Chicago sports bar, took inspiration from their mountainside location, incorporating wild, natural flowers and a pastel palette with pops

of bright berry. After a magical outdoor ceremony in the woods next to a waterfall, they took a gondola up the mountain with their guests to the reception at a local restaurant with exposed log beams, huge picture window views and a stone fireplace. Stylist Celeste Greene transformed the cosy space with swags of greenery, lush blooms and candlelight, creating the perfect warm and inviting atmosphere. Stephanie and Kevin’s favourite moment? Their photo session in a meadow overlooking miles and miles of mountain terrain, where the setting sun cast a heavenly glow – the perfect place to take in the scene, and the incredible moment.

"We decided to elope, and only invite 25
close family
and friends, and it allowed us to splurge in the areas that meant most to us and plan the wedding we really wanted. It was the best decision we ever made."
58
"Annie Brooks of the Wells Makery created all of our paper goods. She designed a
beautiful wedding program that included a
hand-drawn map of Telluride. It displayed the locations of all our wedding events that weekend, and also included a section where we could write each
guest a personalised note. Her beautiful calligraphy and the
wedding logo she created, along with the detailed map, made for such a beautiful presentation.
Our guests absolutely loved it!"

When Joel Davis-Goff stood waiting, sign in hand, at Wellington Airport, he had no idea that the person he was expecting was his future bride – then a delegate at a youth forum with which he was volunteering. The two hit it off, and after an eighteen month friendship, he asked Rachael out. Four years after that, Joel proposed with an incredibly romantic picnic by the beach, and a song that he’d written just for her!
The nature-loving couple had imagined an outdoor wedding, but when they chose a winter date, decided to bring the outside in with their woodland-style dÊcor instead. Rachael’s talented relatives crafted, sewed, baked and foraged to create each beautiful detail. The bouquets included manuka flowers, something that was especially meaningful to the bride, whose arrangement also included anemones, greenery, and yellow blooms. Even her dress reflected the natural theme, with a beaded lace overlay inspired by trees.

“The most memorable moment for both of us was catching our first glimpse of each other as I walked down the aisle. We were both so overcome by emotion – Joel was fighting back tears and I was blatantly laugh-crying the whole way. It felt like everything we had shared together – the conversations, the adventures, the friendship, the holidays, the day-to-day – was compressed into that one moment.”

It was a case of ‘right place, right time’ when Chelsey Asiala and a friend grabbed the last two seats at a bar in Scottsdale, Arizona, having just moved to the state from their hometown in North Dakota. Sitting next to them were Aaron and his buddy. A blissful courtship later, Aaron proposed (with a little help from the couple’s dog, Duncan), and planning began for their vintage-inspired wedding.
103
"Family is very important to us. My something old was a bracelet that belonged to my great-grandmother and was passed down to my grandmother, who gave it to me to wear on my wedding day." 104
105
The day was full of handmade, heartfelt touches – many of them DIY-ed by the bride’s mother. Antique cameras from Chelsey’s collection were used as part of each centrepiece, alongside succulents and mercury glass. Vintage postcards (another of the bride’s favourite things) were used as Save the Dates and escort cards. In lieu of a guest book, family and friends were invited to write messages on pieces of linen, which will be used to create a quilt. The wedding motto was ‘Best. Day. Ever.’ – a sentiment shared by both the couple and their guests as the newlyweds walked back down the aisle in their matching green shoes to the strains of a string quartet playing ‘Don’t Stop Believing’. And they held on to that feeling all night long, including when Aaron took to the dancefloor with Chelsey’s Grandma Grace for a celebratory polka.

Usually it’s a wedding that follows love, but for Lauren and Alex, it was a wedding that brought them together in the first place. Alex, a musician, was playing the same apple orchard reception that Lauren, a photographer, was capturing on film. The two got chatting, and after connecting on Facebook, became inseparable. Exactly one year later, they returned to the same apple orchard, where Alex proposed – this time the wedding they were planning was theirs.

The most memorable moment of the day
" for me was the few minutes leading up to the ceremony, and walking down the aisle. My Dad prayed for me, and then as we started to walk down the aisle, he began to cry and quickly put his sunglasses on to hide his tears. And then, of course, seeing my best friend at the end of the aisle... It was all very emotional!"
125
"Alex and I both love nature. He loves adventurous hiking and camping, and I spent my childhood riding and camping with our horses whenever we could. Having our wedding outdoors was something that was really important to us, and our palette followed suit with our love for neutrals complementing the light flowers and emphasising the colours of the greenery."

Many couples share a passion for something – for Nicole and Jason, it’s a continent. Their love of Africa echoes like a drumbeat throughout their relationship. It’s what first brought them together, after a friend introduced them and they discovered a mutual love of travel, adventure and wild places, and it’s what inspired their sophisticated safari wedding at the family’s private game reserve, complete

with a custom-built luxury campsite for their guests. Over the course of the weekend, friends and family were treated to game drives, bird watching and sunset drinks in a river bed lit with oil lamps and fireflies – all this before the main event, an open air bush ceremony and Out of Africa-style reception in an Indian silk tent, complete with vintage suitcases, canvas director’s chairs, and naturalist curiosity centrepieces.
“On a clear and starry night, Jason gathered his courage and popped the question under the tree in our garden with a ring he’d secretly carved out of vegetable ivory. Within seconds of putting the ring on my finger the heavens opened and we sat kissing and crying together in the rain. African legend says that rain is a sign of blessings from above, and that night we felt infinitely blessed!
141
142
“Knowing that we had no music arranged for our open air ceremony and our love for all things Africa, Jason’s brother arranged a very special surprise – as I walked down the hill towards the aisle, Ladysmith Black Mambazo (a famous choral group from South Africa) appeared and sang one of our favourite Paul Simon songs.”

It’s been said that when you find the love of your life, you just know – that’s what happened to Clara Kim when she ran into Patrick Chen with mutual friends on the streets of New York City. “I distinctively remember looking up and him and thinking: It happened! I finally met my future husband!” she says. After dating for some time, an engagement was on the cards, but Patrick still managed to surprise his bride with a New Year’s Eve proposal, and as they rung in the new year as husband-and-wife-to-be, Clara’s premonition finally became a reality. For their wedding, the big city couple chose to celebrate their new home in Northern California, with an elegantly rustic barn venue and a ceremony among the redwoods.
155
156
"I wanted a soft, romantic look for our wedding flowers. I let my bridesmaids pick out their own dress colours and I think our florist did an amazing job carrying out the colour palette throughout the wedding. I also asked for succulents, wooden boxes, and loose florals on the farm tables. The overall look came out to be this beautiful scene of washed out watercolours. They did a great job capturing what I wanted for the day."
158
“"It’ s easy to get overwhelmed with the
abundance of photos on Pinterest and
wedding blogs, but remember: less is more!"”
159
“Our venue, Nestldown, is such a special, magical place. We got married in a grove of towering redwoods and walked down the aisle (together!) to Birds of Tokyo’s ‘Lanterns’. I can vividly remember feeling incredibly nervous but so excited the moment it started playing. When Patrick and I joined hands for our walk down the aisle, I felt completely at ease.”
