WE'VE BEEN LONG TIME FANS OF ALL THINGS RUCHE HERE AT MAGNOLIA ROUGE... AND NOT JUST BECAUSE PART OF OUR NAME SOUNDS SIMILAR!! IT WAS A GREAT HONOUR FOR US TO FEATURE THE LATEST BRIDAL LOOK BOOK SHOOT BY ELIZABETH MESSINA AS OUR COVER, SO WE THOUGHT WE WOULD FIND OUT A BIT MORE ABOUT THEIR FOUNDER. MR: Did you always want to get involved in the fashion world? MO: While growing up, I enjoyed shopping and combing through thrift stores for vintage finds, but I never imagined myself being so involved in fashion like I am now. I always wanted to do something creative for a living though, and having my own business was a dream of mine.

MR: How did you get Ruche up and running? MO: As a hobby in 2005, I sold vintage-inspired beaded sandals on eBay, and eventually, my hobby turned into a dream come true. In 2008, my husband Josh and I designed and created ShopRuche.com. Right out of our home, Ruche was born and we worked on it every day after our regular 8-5 jobs. Once every inch of our home was covered in boxes, we took a risk: I left my job as a web developer and Josh left his engineering management position to run Ruche full time. It was truly one of the best decisions we’ve ever made together and we haven’t looked back since. MR: Was there one particular thing you did that propelled you to the success you have today, or was it a string of things? MO: Definitely a string of things. Through trial and error and a great deal of inspiration, Ruche has become what it is today. Extreme passion and hard work were key to our success (and still are), not only from Josh and I, but also from our amazing Ruche team who have made the impossible possible. MR: I know you've just had a baby... how are you juggling this exciting stage of your life with running a successful business? MO: It’s a tough job to do – almost like having two babies! So far, the main challenge has been adapting my schedule to fit Amelie’s needs. Whenever I’m in the office, I try to work twice as hard and twice as fast so that I can get home at a reasonable hour. Having a baby changes your sleep schedule, so when I’m up in the middle of the night, I also use that time to send out emails. Ruche isn’t all grown up yet and still needs constant attention and nurturing too. Even with the difficulties though, Amelie really is the best thing that has ever happened to us, and Josh and I couldn’t be happier. MR: What one piece of advice would you offer to someone hoping to start up an online fashion business? MO: Do your research, and do it well. There has been a huge boom of online fashion businesses in the past few years so competition is high.


MR: What's the work environment like at Ruche Headquarters? MO: We like to think of ourselves as one big family. For many of our team members, Ruche is the first job out of college and it has been an amazing experience growing, learning together, and watching our team players assume key roles on all fronts. In addition to a passionate and fast paced environment, we try to make it a fun environment too. For example, our Warehouse Manager rides a scooter inside, and our Social Media Coordinator makes the most amazing desserts for everyone. We have a room dedicated to arts and crafts and there are always puppies working with us in the office. We have “Breakfast Mondays” and “Free Lunch Fridays”, and of course, we have awesome holiday parties too! MR: We all know how much work it takes to run your own business... do you manage to keep strict 'work hours' and take evenings/weekends off? MO: Josh and I didn’t start taking weekends off until the middle of last year (2012), and it wasn’t until Amelie when we started taking evenings off. Even up until the last week before my due date, we spent most nights in the office until 8 or 9pm. Today, however, we strive to maintain strict work hours. Weekends and evenings have a new meaning now, and we look forward to spending unconditional time with Amelie. MR: What's your favourite aspect of running Ruche? MO: The creativity! The creative aspects of running Ruche involve shopping, products, styling, photo shoots, crafts, graphics and marketing, and by being involved with these areas, my own creativity is sparked and I continuously feel inspired/motivated to take Ruche to the next level. MR: Your photo shoots are always incredibly beautiful - and of course we have been so thrilled to feature one - and look like they must be so much fun to capture! Do you have a team dedicated to coming up with concepts for these? MO: Our company is still fairly small, so our creative team is comprised of our Products and Marketing team members. We meet once a week to brainstorm ideas/concepts for editorial content and lookbook ideas. There are always tons of ideas to be heard and new moodboards to be seen!

With a gorgeous family property at their disposal, the scene was set for Olivia and Travis's rustic farm-inspired wedding celebration. Hay bales, wooden signs, timber logs used for side tables and centrepieces and of course plenty of hessian, all combined to create the look they were after. And the Pièce de rÊsistance was the twisted willow chandeliers hanging over the tables. Every detail was handmade with love, from the colourful fabric bunting to hand sewn ties for the groomsmen with their names stitched on the back, to a special beer brewed for the occasion by the bride's brother.


"Go with what feels right for you as a couple. It might not necessarily be traditional but it's your day and if it's not 'you', then what's the point? That, and smile. Always smile."




We wanted a country-style, almost wildflower feel to our floral arrangements. Hundreds of varying sized and shaped bottles and jars were collected by friends and family and filled with yellows, silvers, greens and whites with pops of stunning tangerine and apricot. The loose displays that were on the tables and scattered around the hay bales added to our relaxed atmosphere. Mum and Dad had also spent over a year preparing their garden to coordinate with the colour scheme (not to mention the summer drought that they had to battle with!).

As a florist and event designer in Santa Barbara for 15 years, I have seen hundreds of lovely weddings. The ones that stand out are the ones that really reflected the couple, their personalities, their interests, their love and families. I think it is so important to create a beautiful cocoon that supports and reflects such a special occasion. It is one of the most important events of your life and should be treated with loving care and given the proper attention to detail that it deserves. To personalise your wedding, really consider who you and your partner are, what you are into, what your hobbies are. Are you into sports? Maybe ride in on a bicycle or canoe across a lake for your arrival or your getaway. Play games at your wedding during the cocktail hour, anything from horseshoes to lawn bowling. Are you a surfer? Have a surfboard that all your guests sign instead of a guest book. Have “score cards” that your guests fill out with words of advice on how to have a beautiful, long and loving marriage.

Perhaps you are foodies? Have all of your guests bring a favourite recipe from their families written out on oldfashioned recipe cards. Take Polaroid pictures of each of your guests and create a scrapbook with their pictures and response cards. Create a homemade chutney or jam as party favours and include the recipe and the story behind it. Create a family photo table honouring the combining of your families. Have a photo wall with pictures of everyone that is attending. If you have time write a description of each person in the picture with a note saying what the picture is about. Make everything more personal. Have each table be photos of you and your sweetheart growing up. Each table could be a school year with your school picture as the table marker. If you are combining two different cultural backgrounds then honour them in the décor or in the food. Have a fusion of the two cultures in your menu, or in the flowers of your homeland. Mix your traditions in the ceremony. Pull the parts you like into a cohesive single ceremony. Are you into music or literature? Name each table after a favourite author or musician, book or album. Then have favorite quotes or lyrics scrolled up at each place setting. If your wedding is an intimate affair then consider writing a short note to each of your quests explaining why it is important to you for them to be there. Maybe make a beautiful gift for each person. Homemade jams, candles, potpourri, poems, quotes… anything to show you love them and they are important to you and your sweetheart.

Your guest cards are a great way to really express your personality and interests. I once did a wedding for a biologist that studied butterflies. The cards were the identifying index cards for various butterflies. The guest name was the “species”, The table name was the “habitat”, and the “genus” said either friend or family. One wedding couple who were enthusiastic gardeners had a guest card table that was a covered with beautiful potted herbs and plants, many they had grown themselves. Some were huge plants in beautiful containers, some were flower arrangements and some were blooming bulb flowers. In addition, sprinkled through out were garden tools, beautiful birdhouses, nests, and other gardeny details. The table looked like a beautiful display at a nursery center. The guest’s names were written on metal garden markers placed in small Herb pots that the couple had potted especially for each guest. This served both as the guest card and a lovely favor as well as being a beautiful focal point throughout the evening. Wherever you can look to add your special touch, make it personal. Nicole & Hiten OJAI, CALIFORNIA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LACIE HANSEN

Nicole and Hiten had a beautiful traditional Brahmin Hindu ceremony to celebrate their union. With the help of their florist, Kate from Flowerwild, they carried the Indian influences throughout the cocktail reception with the decor as well as the food that they served. Being the laid back people they are, it was important to the couple that the wedding reflected this and that it was inviting and comfortable for their guests. They had unique Indian-inspired details throughout the event and gold and saffron tones were used as the colour palette with pops of indigo blue.

Yoga, for both of us, is a place where a person really gets to be who they are,

without a facade. We are so glad we met there, in that way. I arrived at a class early one Thursday evening and Nicole came in, quietly set her mat beside me and our relationship began. Even before uttering a single word between us, we felt it immensely. After class, we both (uncharacteristically) sat and waited. I broke the silence by asking how old she was when she realised she lived a blessed life... I think we both immediately fell in love. We had our first date the next day, said we loved each other the following, and by the Sunday began to plan our marriage and our family. And that was it, no struggle, no fight, no second guessing. Just us.

Set in the countryside near Valencia, Finca Torrefiel perfectly reflects the refined elegance of the gowns, matching their vintage delicacy with its sophisticated surroundings.

"The theme really fit our personalities:

a southwestern vibe with local Nashville flare."

With friends all over the US and inevitable travel wherever the wedding was held, Corey and Mallory decided on Nashville, Tennessee, where they had recently made their home. Mallory found their perfect farm wedding venue online, but the only available date was just three months away! They decided to go for it, and managed to pull together the perfect rustic southwestern-style celebration, and a perfect destination wedding for their guests.


COREY AND I HAVE A VERY LAID-BACK/EARTHY STYLE. WE WANTED SOMETHING CASUAL AND NOT TOO OVER-THE-TOP, and I had always wanted an outdoor wedding. I initially didn't think I wanted a sit-down dinner, but in the end I loved that the tables were family style and that it was in the back yard of the farmhouse. Being able to really share a meal and quality time with our family and friends made it so much more personal for us.

"It felt like I was eating in my grandmother's backyard with all my extended family members!"



"I don't know much about flowers, but I am slightly obsessed with feathers! My bouquet was teardrop style with a mixture of soft peach garden roses, chocolate cosmos, sandstone roses, peach hypericum berries, brown lotus pods, small succulents and pheasant feathers."



"WE HAVE REALLY FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THIS CITY'S HIP, ECLECTIC, CREATIVE ATMOSPHERE AND WANTED TO SHOWCASE SOME OF THE LOCAL ARTISANS."

"MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE DAY WAS THE FIRST LOOK. I AM SO GLAD WE DID IT! IT WAS GOOD TO BE ABLE TO SEE COREY PRIOR TO THE CEREMONY AND SPEND A FEW MINUTES OF DOWNTIME REFLECTING ON THE DAY. I STILL HAD BUTTERFLIES WALKING DOWN THE AISLE – IT DIDN'T TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM THAT MOMENT."

'Lush', 'fragrant' and 'colourful' were the three words used to convey to the florist the vision Tara had of her wedding to Stephanie. It would seem all that was achieved and then some. Tara joked that it was a "garden party with the Kennedys in California" theme: an incredible dinner party, the kind that no one would ever forget, with explosions of colour all around. The couple focused on being great hosts and giving their guests the best experience they could.




"We wanted every part of the ceremony to be purposeful and meaningful to us as a couple. The ceremony positively flew by and was one of the most emotionally complete times of my life."


Favourite detail... "This would have to be the paper flower wreath which I constructed entirely by hand. The wreath itself was made of grape vines that I soaked in our bathtub, then formed into shape on our front lawn with wire wrapped in a dark raffia, and let dry. The neighbors must have thought I was nuts, but I couldn’t figure out how to keep the vines in their shape without staking them to the ground, and our front yard is the only outdoor space we have. The flowers were made of wire and dyed coffee filters. We hand dyed them, sorted and separated them, and then cut and wired them into the shapes you see. I made about 300 flowers with the help of any friend or family member who happened to make the foolish mistake of dropping by in the month or so it took. If you were sitting on my couch, you were making paper flowers."






The perfect moment... "Waking up in our cottage and spending the morning on the porch watching the hotel wake up around us and begin to buzz with the preparation of the wedding was so special. It was during that time that I assembled the wreath. Everyone, including my beautiful bride, thought I was insane to put off the task until the morning of the wedding, but I knew it would provide me with a quiet, grounding moment. Spending a little time on the task of arranging the paper flowers on the wreath and focusing my creative energy for a moment was simply wonderful. Stephanie and our closest friends and family, all staying at the hotel, were able to sit with me on the porch that morning as summer bloomed around us. It was an extraordinary and blissful moment I will never forget."

Elizabeth Antonia of The Littlest Blog & her husband Michael, better known in the wedding world as DJ, The Flashdance, drove up to Santa Ynez and Los Olivos on a beautiful spring day to capture some special family moments with their adorable daughter Elodie.



E

lizabeth tells us, "Our friends Jose Villa and Joel Serrato live nearby and have a special relationship with the environment. The light in this part of California is pure magic and I feel an indescribable joy every time we visit. Elodie was being a completely normal three year old and not totally into taking pictures, so we told her we were in the Hundred Acre Wood. She found some purple thistles and kept on the look out for Pooh Bear and Eeyore the entire time. I remember everything about this day – the beautiful drive, the famous tri-tip sandwiches from the local market, and the first movements of baby number two."

with White Loft Studio Being immersed in the wedding industry means Heidi of White Loft Studio, is constantly surrounded by 'pretty', but as she dips her toe into the food world a little more she has come to realise that the formation of a menu – the smells and tastes that entice guests at an event – are often overlooked when putting inspiring shoots together. So in that spirit she has put together an eclectic team of talents, connecting the wedding world to the food arena in this gorgeously rustic winter shoot. Maggie (of Eat Boutique acclaim) is a true tastemaker in the food world and has put together a menu that reflects the winter season, using readily available produce. Christine Tobin, a Boston based food stylist, came in to prep and style Maggie's menu. All of these components were married with Forêt’s out-of-the-box approach to styling to create something that felt real, New England, and rustic.

This menu was inspired by chilly nights deep in the woods when only red wine and candlelight will do. The red wine is sweetened with a little black currant liqueur, and the cheese course is piled high with preserved fruits, freshly cracked nuts and seasonal fruits. The filling meal of chestnut soup, roasted hens and white beans is topped with a light, booze-infused dessert, a duo of winter pavlovas that impress with cream and fruit.




Brown Sugar Pavlova

with Port-Soaked Cherries Recipe for brown sugar meringue from Epicurious INGREDIENTS FOR MERINGUE • Confectioners sugar for dusting • 1 cup superfine granulated sugar • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar • 1 1/2 tbsps cornstarch • 1 1/2 tsps pure vanilla extract • 2 tsps distilled white vinegar • 3/4 cup egg whites (from 5 to 6 large eggs) sitting at room temperature for 30 minutes DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 135C (275F) with rack in middle. 2. Lightly butter three 20cm (8 inch) round cake pans, then dust sides of pans with confectioners sugar, knocking out excess. 3. Line bottom of each pan with a round of parchment paper. 4. Pulse superfine sugar, brown sugar, and cornstarch in a food processor until well combined. 5. Stir together vanilla and vinegar in a small bowl. 6. Beat egg whites with a pinch of salt using an electric mixer at medium speed until they hold soft peaks. Increase speed to medium-high and add sugar mixture 1 tablespoon at a time. After all sugar has been added, beat 1 minute more. 7. Add vinegar mixture, then beat at high speed until meringue is glossy and holds stiff peaks, about 5 minutes. Spoon meringue into pans (about 2 1/2 cups per pan) and smooth tops. 8. Bake until meringues have a crisp crust and feel dry to the touch, about 1 hour (insides will still be marshmallow-like). 9. Turn oven off and prop door open slightly with a wooden spoon. Cool meringues in oven 1 hour. (Meringues may sink slightly and crack while cooling.) 10. Run knife along sides of cake pans and carefully turn meringues out of pans. Carefully peel off parchment (meringues will be fragile and the crust may crack further). Carefully turn right side up. 11. Stack your merigues while evenly distributing the cream inbetween along with some of your cherries & syrup. 12. Top final layer with cream and cherries and drizzle with some of the additional syrup.

HONEY POACHED APRICOTS Recipe by Christine Tobin

INGREDIENTS FOR MERINGUE • 4 organic large egg whites • Pinch fine salt • ½ tsp white vinegar • ¾ cup granulated sugar • 1 tbsp cornstarch • ½ tsp vanilla extract • ½ cup cracked hazelnuts DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 175 °C / 350 °F. 2. Combine egg whites, salt, and white vinegar together in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on high speed until soft peaks form. Combine the ¾ cup sugar and cornstarch together in a small bowl and add to the egg whites in thirds, whisking each addition in completely. Add the vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form. 3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spoon the meringue in eight big spoonfuls as Gwyneth does in her recipe, using a spoon to spread them in a circle, and then make an indent in each, or simply spread the entire meringue into whatever shape you desire – we did a rectangle. 4. Bake for 10 minutes, lower the heat to 95°C / 200 °F, and bake for another hour. Turn off the heat and cool the meringues in the oven for an hour, propping the door open with a wooden spoon. 5. Once cool, evenly distribute the cream on the meringues.

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups honey
 • Juice and zest of 1 lemon
 • 24 apricots, (whole or halved and pitted) DIRECTIONS 1. Combine honey, lemon juice and zest, and ½ cup water in a saucepan. 2. Bring to a boil over medium to medium-low heat. 3. Poach apricots, a few at a time, until soft, 3–5 minutes, depending on ripeness of fruit. 4. Remove with a slotted spoon and cool.

PICKLED CRANBERRIES Recipe by Maggie Battista adapted from Marisa McClellan’s recipe in Food in Jars INGREDIENTS • 1 ½ cups of cranberries • 1 ½ cups apple cider vinegar • 1 ½ cups organic cane sugar • 2 cinnamon sticks • ½ tsp allspice berries • ½ tsp whole cloves • ½ tsp black peppercorns • ½ tsp juniper berries DIRECTIONS 1. Wash cranberries and pick over for any stems or bad berries.

2. Combine vinegar and sugar in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Add cinnamon sticks to the brine. 3. Place allspice berries, whole cloves, black peppercorns and juniper berries in a spice bag or tie them up in a length of cheesecloth. Add them to the brine. 4. Once brine is boiling vigorously, add the cranberries. Stir to combine and cook for 5–7 minutes, until the cranberries begin to pop and the brine has returned to a rolling boil. 5. When cooking time has elapsed, remove pot from heat. Pull out the spice bag and cinnamon sticks. 6. Can according to Marisa’s recipe, or store in the fridge for a few weeks.

STABILISED WHIPPING CREAM Recipe by Christine Tobin INGREDIENTS • 1 tsp plain gelatin • 2 tbsp cold water • 1 cup whipping cream • 3 tbsp powdered sugar • ½ tsp vanilla DIRECTIONS 1. Add gelatin to cold water in small pan and set this over boiling water until it is clear, do not stir. 2. Cool to room temperature. 3. Meanwhile whip the cream until it is medium thick. 4. Pour gelatin mixture into the center of cream while mixer is going. Pour in the gelatin all at once and continue beating. 5. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat until cream stands in stiff peaks.

KA GALLE - SRI L AN A trip to Galle on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, will have you transported back in time to the Dutch colonial era. At the heart of this cosmopolitan city is a jaw-dropping fortress which has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. More than just a pretty place, part of the Galle's allure is the fact that it remains a working community. Whilst tourist activity is growing daily, it has the energetic buzz of a busy town centre. The fort remains a reminder of the European colonialists who populated the town centuries ago, but step away from it into the colourful market-lined streets and you'll find another aspect to this charming town. INGREDIENTS 1.5kg feijoas, peeled and chopped 750g apples, peeled and chopped 1kg sugar 250ml malt vinegar 1 ½ tsp cinnamon 1 ½ tsp ground cardamom 250g dried dates 100g raisins 1 tsp black pepper, ground ½ tsp sea salt

INGREDIENTS 1 kg green tomatoes, roughly chopped 1 kg onion, chopped 250g sultanas 500 g brown sugar 1 litre of malt vinegar 2 tbsp sea salt 1 tbsp black pepper 1 tbsp toasted coriander seeds

DIRECTIONS Place all ingredients in a large pot and cook for a couple of hours, stirring from time to time to prevent the mixture sticking. Cook down until there is very little liquid then pour into hot sterilised jars and seal. Makes 2.5 litres.

DIRECTIONS Combine ingredients in a heavy based pot, bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer until thick. Pour into hot sterilised jars and seal. Leave for a month to mature.





FIG & APRICOT PRESERVE 500g dried figs 500g dried apricots 500g golden raisins 500g sultanas 5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced thinly 250g brown sugar 250ml water Splash of malt vinegar Put sugar and water into a pot and bring to the boil, then turn heat down and add figs, apricots, raisins, sultanas and ginger. Simmer, stirring until reduced and syrupy then add a splash of vinegar to taste. Spoon into hot sterilised jars and keep in fridge.

GREEN OLIVE & THYME BUTTER 250g softened butter Jar of Spanish green olives, pitted 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped Drain the green olives, place in a food processor and blitz until finely chopped. In a bowl, mix butter, olive mash and thyme leaves with a fork until well combined. Use as a delicious alternative to garlic butter. Try it on steak or stuffed chicken breasts.

Use items you have around the home such as coloured glassware or serving bowls to display them. Include herbs such as rosemary for their natural fragrance.

KUMEU, AUCKLAND photography by sutherland kovach New Zealand's west coast is blessed with many beautiful beaches and Muriwai, where Laura and Mike chose to get married, is no exception. A short drive from Auckland, Muriwai is an amazing place with a dramatic, sweeping coastline and a thriving gannet colony, visible from scenic lookouts above the beach.




Mike grew up in Muriwai and it is very special to both him and Laura. After spending a few years travelling the world they always intended to return to New Zealand and settle in the lovely little beach town. They chose to do their first look overlooking the sea and to shoot their creative pictures at the Muriwai Horse Park which extends into the pretty Woodhill Forest. Their ceremony was held a short distance away on a private farm owned by family friends, and they said their vows under a gorgeous old tree bedecked in a homemade garland, with the sound of a waterfall in the distance. Family members all pitched in to help, bringing furniture and refreshments into the clearing.


Their relaxed and convivial ceremony was held at The Tasting Shed, attached to Cooper's Creek Vineyard in Kumeu. Guests mingled and played lawn games under the setting sun before enjoying the incredible menu. Laura and Mike's wedding was exactly the day they had looked forward to - the chance to celebrate their marriage with family and friends in a relaxed setting, and at some of the most special places in the world to them.




Both Laura and Mike come from close families and the help and support they received from their parents, siblings and extended family members was very important to them. Laura's sister, Hayley, painted the sweet signs and table decorations and ably assisted with the planning.

Backtrack a few years to when Olivier took Bethany to Goldeneye, a beautiful spot in Oracabessa Bay, Jamaica. The stunning location is home to secret coves, breathtaking private beaches and tropical forests. On top of this it has a history rich in music with the current owner being the founder of Island Records. And if the name sounds a little familiar to you, yes it’s also where James Bond author, Ian Fleming, wrote many of his famous novels. It was here at this magical spot that Olivier proposed to Bethany on their balcony overlooking the ocean.



F

abulous, breathtaking and memorable is how Bethany describes their wedding celebration. As a couple who travel a lot, they knew from the start that they wanted a destination wedding and also that they wanted to make it a three day celebration. Most of all they wanted a meaningful and special location, so heading back to the romantic place of proposal was an easy decision. Having complete seclusion was important and as they could have the entire property to themselves, it offered them everything they needed. Keeping to a stylish, timeless colour palette of all neutrals, the couple infused their own style and personality into the dĂŠcor. The ceremony and reception were both adorned with hundreds of white orchids, roses and lilies which stood out in contrast to the tropical foliage all around them. Bethany walked down an aisle bedded with white rose petals towards the large trees they were married under.




A dress or three

“I LOVE LOVE LOVE dresses and I work in fashion, so I knew narrowing it down was going to be tough! I needed to decide what kind of bride I wanted to be: a traditional bride, a fashionista bride, or a sexy bride. I decided to be all three! I had a classic Nicole Miller satin dress for the welcome dinner, a Marchesa fashionista gown for the ceremony and a sexy short sequined ombre Monique Lhuillier for the after party! I had the best experience at Bergdorf Goodman where I found my Marchesa wedding gown and because of this experience I also had my bridal shower there at BG Restaurant with 30 of my closest friends. I also wanted my MOH (my sister), MOB and MOG to wear white. The MOB and MOH both wore Monique Lhuillier gowns and the MOG wore Comme Des Garcons gown while all the female guests wore all neutral colors to the formal candlelit Ian Fleming sunken garden ceremony.”

Favourite memory “Second to saying ‘I do’, it was probably all of the speeches our loved ones gave at our welcome dinner the night before. Not only were the speeches so personalised and special, but we had invited all of the guests to join us for a welcome party at Firefly which has one of the most beautiful views of Jamaica – it’s on a mountain and breathtaking. We had a photo shoot beforehand and the background scenery in the pictures is just incredible.“

Special details

“I wore my grandmother’s oval cut blue sapphire with diamond halo, that she gave to my mom, as my something borrowed and my something blue. It’s a smaller version of Princess Diana’s, but my Mom always says she had hers first. One of Olivier’s favourite desserts is the key lime pie from Joe’s Stone Crab. When he and I were dating I would often use their recipe and make him the pie for a special dinner or his birthdays – it is a tradition! Our baker, Jing agreed to make a special surprise for him; they turned out great and we had mini key lime pies served right alongside our cake! I also surprised Olivier with fireworks after the cake cutting!”

This column is to share with you all the exciting styling trends and giving you tips and tricks on how how to bring them to life yourself. The days of the cookie cutter weddings are in the past… these days it’s all about weddings that reflect you, your story, your background, your tastes. Putting your stamp on it gives your guests a chance to be part of something you helped create, something personal, meaningful and special.

WHY HAVE A THEME? Having a theme or style helps to create a different and unique experience for your guests, it allows you to really put your stamp on your big day. It will help to make your wedding different from the rest. A theme is like a little mini brief, it gives you direction and assists in those big decisions and makes them a lot easier. It allows you to easily sew everything together, enabling you to tell the whole story, seamlessly and consistently. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT? To decide on a theme, you need to have a chat with your fiancé. What really makes your heart skip a beat? Are you creative and bold, do you prefer something romantic and whimsical, did you want to play it safe but just be a wee bit unique? DECIDED ON A STYLE, THEN WHAT? Create a moodboard, a collection of things you like….from lighting, to tablescapes, to outdoor and indoor styling, flowers, colour palette etc. Give yourself plenty of time, it's the type of thing you put down and pick up…and then start culling, you can’t do everything, pick the bits that you really like and stick to it. Once its all down on paper, you now have a visual brief for what your wedding will look and feel like and you can then start pulling it together.


RUSTIC This feature is all about the lovely, warm, woody & down to earth theme of ‘rustic’. Rustic is divine and homely, full of charm and gracefulness. It takes the old & beautiful from ‘vintage’ and mixes it with the rawness and grittyness of mother nature creating an un-polished, eclectic, rich and elegant look and feel. It is very DIY and can be pulled together using bits and bobs from nature and from your own home… we think that's what makes it more special!

Colour Palette The rustic colour palette is grounded in its natural roots - oaks, beiges and

creams, and then offset by accents that compliment and bring the colour palette to life – such as maroons, dusky pink & duck egg blues.

Flowers Flowers are un-ruley, natural and loose. Think wild flowers, big old fashioned roses.

A look similar to something you have picked from your own garden. Finished off with twine or long loose ribbon and lace, in your featured colour palette, oooo dreamy.

Wedding Mark We are big fans of creating a wedding mark - be it a word, a phrase with or

without an image. With the rustic theme you can get really ‘woodland’ and pick out animals to feature - deers, owls, rabbits etc. Swoon worthy right there!

Stationery The paper stock and the way you ‘package’ the stationery is really important.

The stock should feel natural (in colour and texture). Wrap the stationery with twine or string, take it back to nature and feature woodland animals or foliage.

Tablescape Have a think about what’s on your tables. Cut down some rings of timber to use as

centrepieces and place objects like vases, jars or tins on them. They could also feature little painted animals have them dotted around on the table and use hessian as a table runner or table cloth.

Backdrop Frame your bridal table with a creative backdrop. Use mismatched fabrics and

hang different length strips, or you could hang an eclectic selection of flowers at different lengths on fishing line so they float in the air, so many yummy things you can do!

Outside Use hay bales and old vintage sheets for seating. Hang ribbon and lace from the trees or

wrap a tree with flowers and twine. String festoon lights in the trees and team with different tins and jars and pop candles in them - the light they throw creates a lovely ambiance.

Ceiling Hang old lanterns or ribbon from the ceiling. The structure of an old lampshade can be used to wrap with flowers, twine and ribbon for something eclectic, rustic and charming.

Joana and James wanted a small, cozy wedding that had a homemade and informal feel to it - a bit like a casual family gathering. Crucially it had to have a Portuguese feel to it. I’m sure you will agree looking at the images, it has just that! Held at the bride's family home in the Minho region in Portugal’s north, it was a place filled with special memories for Joana, who spent many a family vacation there growing up. They held their ceremony in the house chapel, and had the village choir singing for them. It was made even more personal for them with Joana’s uncle performing the Mass, which was tailored to suit them. To celebrate their Portuguese heritage, traditional regional flags – borrowed from family and village members – were hung on clothes lines for colourful decoration. Catering staff wore shirts of traditional costume, and the wedding favours were Portuguese soaps in embroidered bag. An outdoor seating area displayed pillows made with fabric from Alcobaça, and quilts from this region – some more than 100 years old - were hung from the outside walls.




Traditional Portuguese scarves lend some vibrant colour

Utilising the resources at hand in the village, the floral arrangements were all made from plants, flowers and fruit from local gardens and the family orchard. Trying to steer clear of anything too formal, they incorporated items like coloured corn cobs into the centrepieces. Infusing more of their culture into the celebration was the regional group they chose to entertain their guests, which is customary for most parties in the region. With many of the guests joining in and learning new dances it created a fun celebratory atmostphere.

“It might be clichéd, but walking down the aisle was my favourite moment. I will never forget holding my parents' hands, looking at my guy, and having everyone I love around me.”

he inspiration for Erin & Evan’s wedding celebration all began with a page from a Vogue magazine Erin had ripped out ten years earlier. With a love of bright colours, patterns and texture, she went about infusing these elements into their day. With the venue being full of natural greenery the colours really popped and made quite an impression. Erin’s family all lent a hand when it came to doing their bit of DIY. Her father made concrete planters for the centerpieces, which her mother then planted using succulents from her own garden. Her grandmother knitted the chuppah that they stood under, whilst her grandfather carved the wood filaments that the chuppah cloth was secured on.

ucking tradition, the couple walked with their immediate families from the main house to the ceremony site. Describing their day as a ‘lovefest’, they had 185 guests that came from near and far to be there with them. “Every guest fell in love with each other. All the worlds collided and for some reason it worked. Lots of phone numbers were exchanged!!”

CREATE YOUR OWN PRETTY CENTREPIECE WITH THESE EASY TO FOLLOW STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS


You will need... BLOCK OF WOOD SPRAY PAINT HOT GLUE CANDLE DRILL PENCIL FRESH FLOWERS OR FOLIAGE

Position the candle on the wooden block where you would like it, then take a pencil and draw around it as a guideline.

Very carefully drill a hole the size of the diameter you marked out. Make sure it's a perfect for the candle you are using.

Apply the spray paint evenly over the wooden block. We used gold, but you can choose any colour that fits suits.

Cut the stems off the flowers – so you are left with a very small amount. Apply hot glue and immediately place onto the painted block.

Arrange flowers and foliage until you have your desired look. Position the candle in the hole, light and voila! Your very own centrepiece!

Patrick and Cassaundra have travelled all over the world together but their very first trip together was to Paradise Island in the Bahamas. It was whilst out on a beach walk that they discovered the One & Only Ocean Club. The subject of marriage came up as they took in the beautiful Versailles Gardens and the amazing ocean views the venue had to offer. Once engaged and knowing that they wanted a destination wedding with only their closest friends and family, it was an easy decision to head back to the place the talk of marriage had begun.


The dress...

"I had seen some amazing dresses, but it wasn't until I tried on a Melissa Sweet gown at Priscilla of Boston that I knew I had found the one. I wanted to give myself time to think about it, but a couple of days later, I heard that the store was going out of business. My heart sank as I realised my dream dress may be gone forever! I am so thankful for the sales girl, who had put the dress in the back for me, and arranged for my mom to come by the store and purchase the sample. We got such a good deal that I was even able to buy a second dress!"








The music..

"Patrick is a big fan of all kinds of live music, so I decided to surprise him with a Junkanoo Band to crash our reception, dressed in bright, colourful costumes, feathers and headdresses, each playing a different horn or drum. Patrick and our guests loved the surprise and danced along, opening up the dance floor."

As a photographer herself, Jess knew the importance of a striking venue. After stumbling across Abbeville online, it was the only place the couple wanted to visit and they instantly fell in love with it. With heritage-listed buildings, beautiful gardens and its own vintage chapel, it had the ease of being able to hold everything from ceremony to reception all in one place.


THE PROPOSAL "It was very sweet. Rowan planned a surprise weekend getaway. He whisked me off to Waiheke Island and we stayed in a lovely clifftop house. It was a beautiful sunny day and after a yummy breakfast and walk around the island I found him waiting on the clifftop. He got down on one knee and popped the question. I very excitedly said yes and we celebrated with champagne and a gorgeous dinner."



THE DRESS "I knew I wanted something comfortable to wear, and I'm not really one to dress up too much so I felt like something with a romantic Bohemian vibe would work for me. I went to a bridal show and I saw my John Zimmermann gown sashay down the runway and it just felt right. I went to try it on, and John remade it for me in a peach tone and it moulded perfectly to my frame. It was a dream to wear!"


THE FLOWERS "Oh they were so dreamy! I wanted a rustic, handpicked feel with soft tones, and Naomi from Leaf & Honey captured it perfectly. They were my favourite detail of the day and filled our home for days afterwards too."



SPECIAL MOMENT "The vows were our favourite moment. We couldn't keep our eyes off each other and sharing that moment together is something we will never forget."
