The best is yet to come for guests at a loft style cocktail party, as it transforms into a surprise city wedding.
Exposed brick walls and sleek furnishings create a stylish welcome and intimate setting for a cocktail-style gathering of close friends and family. The environment is playful and sociable, with sips and sweets (champagne and mini desserts) on a decorative credenza table and an understated urban palette of grey, white and navy complemented with organic details like succulents and moss. Eclectic lounge vignettes of Florence Knoll and Eames furnishings invite guests to lounge on daybeds or perch on barstools at high console tables, while the bride gives a hint at what’s to come in her white cocktail dress.

in the beginning... Tiffany and Peter's relationship began with an unforgettable dance at a small work function ten years ago, and came full circle when they again danced as husband and wife, with the sun setting over the lavender fields of the San Ysidro Ranch. Planning their marriage came very early on for the couple, when they would spend hours discussing each other's life plans and their future family. After a romantic and sentimental proposal in front of Peter's Grandfather's house in Spain, their plans could begin in earnest.
the dress... Finding the perfect dress was actually harder for me than I had originally thought it would be. I found myself falling in love with every dress I was trying on, making my decision very difficult. What I came to realize, however, was the reason I could not make a decision was because I had not found 'the one'. When I tried on the Rivini dress it was almost as though the stars had aligned. The dress was perfect – lace, soft organza, heart shaped and most of all ROMANTIC! I was in love. Now for the problem – the wedding was in one month and there was not enough time to order a dress! Don’t forget though, the stars were aligned for me that day! The sample was in perfect condition and only needed minor alterations. The wedding veil was the icing on the cake for me. I loved the soft touches of lace wrapped around the edges. It pulled everything together and made the look complete.
the flowers... I knew I wanted a soft and romantic ambience for the wedding and ceremony. Mindy Rice truly helped to make that vision a reality through her floral and event design. She truly is one of the most talented women I have ever met!

essie had known since she was a little girl that she wanted to get married on her grandparents' property in Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast of Australia. Preferring a relaxed style wedding, this special location gave her and David the perfect setting for their reception. With the equally rustic Boomerang Farm nearby for their ceremony, it all came together to set the perfect scene, surrounded by trees, wild life and the odd ramshackle barn.
The Proposal...
"It was our five year anniversary and we were having a romantic weekend away. On the day itself David wanted to get a picture of us in a photo booth to re-create what we did on our second year anniversary. We did the typical cheesy shots but then he wanted us to do separate ones as well. I thought it was a bit weird but did it any way. At the end when his photo popped out of the booth and I picked it up to look, he had held up a sign in the photo saying ‘will you marry me?’ He was by then down on one knee with the ring. We had quite the romantic moment in the middle of a game arcade!"
Favourite moment...
"My favourite moment would probably be our entrance where we were covered in confetti, and the traditional Tongan dance we had to honour David's family heritage. Also the hours of dancing and singing on the dance floor!"
The Flowers...
"Mum and I hit up the market a few days before the wedding to pick out all the flowers. I knew I wanted orange ranunculus as my bouquet flower and everything else would depend on what was available. Together we put all the bouquets together for the bridal party. We used leftovers for the tables and Mum popped down to the markets on the wedding morning to grab some extras for decoration."
The Styling...
"My mum is an artist by trade and has lots of experience in set design and styling for events, so she was a huge help in the decorating. We bought all the colourful fabrics to sew the tablecloths and seat covers ourselves. We used old glass jars with twine and wire for the candles. An old tree was cut up to create seats and we also used hay bales for seats and tables. We went as DIY as possible!"
The Dress...
"I have always been very traditional and wanted a very special and sentimental wedding day. Before even searching for a dress I decided to try on my grandmother's. It was perfect! The dress was worn by my grand mother and mother and has been through quite a lot, including a house fire! My mum had to restitch all the lace as it was falling apart but she did an amazing job and I was able to wear the dress!"
The Tradition...
"Instead of a ‘Wishing Well’ we had a traditional Tongan Tau’olunga (dance) held to acknowledge David's family heritage. The dance was performed by our Tongan cousin, who was dressed in a traditional dress hand made in Tonga. The costume covers the torso, with the arms and legs exposed and then covered with a special oil. During the dance the guests come forward and place money on her skin. The proceeds of the dance then go to the bride and groom."

photography by Kat Braman As a photographer herself Laura had attended hundreds of weddings and having witnessed so many fun celebrations full of details, she knew that when it came to her own day, she wanted something a little more intimate and personal. A day where the focus was all about her and Chris. It was important to them that their wedding images reflected the surrounding scenery, wherever that may be. It was the spectacular landscapes and natural beauty of New Zealand that had them hopping a plane from their home in the United States to get married in the mountains, in the depths of a Southern Hemisphere winter. Photographer Kat Braman was not only there to document their dream wedding adventure,she was the only other person to witness their vows on the top of The Remarkables mountain range in Queenstown. It wasn't until the morning of the day that they chose the actual location where they would become husband and wife.
The Dress
"I wanted something unique, soft, and feminine. I saw a few dresses that resembled what I was looking for but I hadn’t found “the one�. My mom and I talked about the dress and the look I wanted and she offered to make it for me. I was touched by the gesture and trusted her with the entire design. Not only did she match my vision, she also poured her heart into it; that made it a million times more meaningful than anything I could have bought at a store."
"We tied our rings around our wrists with twine and cut them when we exchanged them".
Favourite detail
"I loved that we dressed each other outdoors. It was sweet, emotional and humbling. Also after we shared our first kiss, the heavens celebrated our new beginning as it began to snow. We held each other in the cold and enjoyed the beauty of it all."
Advice to other brides
"Details and planning are important, but the most important thing of all is your love. Don’t let anything trump that. A wedding day is more than just a celebration full of fancy details. It’s the beginning of your life together."
DIY elements
We had a few DIY details. My mother made my bouquet and my dress and I made Chris’ boutonniere with an old watch and a wedding picture of his parents on their wedding day. This detail was very special since Chris’ father is no longer with us.

endy and Kelvin were brought together by their love for a 'great dining experience', so amazing food, a gorgeous venue, great entertainment – and for Wendy, a stunning outfit – were all key to creating their dream wedding. Finding their venue, Gramercy Park Hotel, was the easiest decision in the planning process. Quirky, artsy and full of personality, it also provided an earthy and organic area, much like a 'secret garden' in the form of its terrace, where they could hold the ceremony. With the venue needed little decor they could focus on other things like bringing on the board the 'best photographer ever' and Wendy's dress.
"Many of the details of the wedding were very personal and intimate touches – I couldn't find an invitation design that I liked, so I sketched the facade of the venue and hand-addressed all the envelopes. We had a bunch of wine bottles in our apartment so we chalkboard painted them, and one of my maids of honour helped me turn each one into a table number. The 'wedding globe' guestbook was a very random idea, but Kelvin and I thought our guests would have fun writing all over it and pointing out fun travel ideas."
THE dANCE
"My favourite part of the wedding was the part that made me the most nervous, and a part I almost wanted to cut out the first dance and the parents' dance. When else would I get to dance with my Dad? I wouldn't trade that experience in for anything else. The whole wedding was the most amazing experience. To see so many friends and family gathered in one place to celebrate with Kelvin and I – it was so touching. There is a reason why people advise you to not get too crazy and caught up with the details, and to remember to relax and enjoy the experience because it all goes by so quickly. It's true! Invest in the things that make an experience amazing for you, and don't get too worried about people who wonder if it will work because it seems so non-traditional. There are enough talented and creative people out there who will make your vision come true!"
THE photos
"Finding an amazing photographer was a top priority. They would need to be able to capture the venue perfectly, and it would be tough since the space is super tight, very much the opposite of the usual wedding banquet halls. Also, it would be dark, because of the atmosphere we wanted to create, with most of the outdoor lighting provided only by votives and string lights. I found KT's pictures while searching for images of weddings that took place at the hotel, and instantly fell in love with how she was able to capture the feel of the space in pictures. Looking at her images was like revisiting the romance and glamour of the venue again. Nothing was watered down; it was just as vibrant as in my memories."
THE dress
"The hardest part of the whole planning process was finding THE dress. After trying on what felt like a million dresses, I saw pictures of the new Douglas Hannant collection on a blog, and loved the crazy one with the print and the folded skirt. Though I knew I'd risk looking like an origami cocktail napkin, I loved it! It was an unusual piece of work, sculptural and dramatic and not girly. I placed my order nearly one month away from the wedding, and crossed my fingers that the all-white version would turn out perfect!"

There were many influences for the wedding style. I wanted to incorporate elements from my rural NZ upbringing as well as the rolling farmland which was our ceremony backdrop. We opted for 1950s style throughout the bridal party and chose to use natural fibres like hessian on the tables. I spent about 20 months planning and was so pleased to find Shaye from On My Hand to help my dream wedding come true. We wanted it to be a fun, colourful wedding and it really was!"

After first meeting five years ago on a run,
Trevor and Chantelle kept bumping into each other over the next few years at various sporting events but the timing was never quite right for them to get together. Finally in the summer of 2010, the stars aligned and they've been together ever since. When it came to proposing, Trevor decided that no place or event would be special enough. The moment had to be very honest and true, so it was that on one of their Sunday mornings together, Chantelle woke up to Trevor on bended knee beside the bed. The couple referred to their big day as a 'celebration of life' rather than a wedding, and for this reason they chose the first of September – the beginning of spring in South Africa – to symbolise the start of life and new beginnings. With only 50 guests in total, they held an intimate celebration on a farm in Clarins, in the Free State. Whilst the wedding had an air of formality, there were plenty of colourful rustic chic touches in keeping with the location.

"Trevor’s dad is a minister so it was really special for him to marry us. There was a part in his service where he asked us to hold hands and he spoke to each of us telling us how important these hands are. For me Trevor’s hands will keep me safe and protect me in hard times; they will be my strength. For Trevor my hands would comfort him in dark times, they would raise his children and love him tenderly… it was so beautiful and powerful."

"I was so in love with my dress! I was very fortunate as Trevor’s brother, Stanley Baptiste, is a designer based in Bloemfontein. I was never a girl who dreamt about my wedding dress my whole life; all I knew was that I wanted to look beautiful. Stanley was very patient with me and sketched a number of designs but I fell head over heels in love with the one, he did EVERYTHING else, the dress was absolutely amazing, everything I wanted, I felt like a princess!"
"Take your time, don’t rush to choose a date, do it your way. Listen to advice but make sure you are happy as a team. It’s the first big event you will plan as a couple, don’t fight about the small things, and enjoy the time you get to spend planning together. Make sure you look each other in the eyes when you walk down the aisle; that is the moment it all sinks in and you suddenly realise this is not about the flowers and fuss, it's about your partner, your team mate, your new life!"

After an 'accidental' proposal when they were lurking outside of a jewellery store, followed by a long winded debacle to get the perfect engagement ring, Tyler & Tessa set about planning a wedding that combined great food, uplifting music and a jolly good time! Focusing more on their guests' experience than following tradition, the couple created a laid-back and informal day for all to enjoy. This focus led them to having an afternoon tea, which was a huge hit with their friends and family. Serving sandwiches, cakes and punch, it gave everyone a chance to mingle whilst the Bridal Party were off having their photos taken.
“We didn’t want to focus on wedding traditions but more on what made us happy and what our guests would enjoy.”
“The inspiration for our wedding styling came from my love of all things lace, rustic and vintage. We didn’t have a colour scheme as such, but kept things fairly neutral and in pastel shades. Everything, from the invitations to the cake table, was second hand, borrowed or handmade. My brother, dad and cousin made an altar out of old doors that we borrowed from the historic trust in Oamaru, the cake table was an old door, and the seating plan was written on a window frame I borrowed. A family friend made another table from old railway sleepers and we used this for punch at the afternoon tea. We used hay bales for seating at the ceremony and mum and her friends had a couple of working bees to make beautiful, creative cushions out of remnant fabric. We collected flowers from friends and family’s gardens and had them treated at a florist.”
THE CAKE "We didn’t want a traditional wedding cake
and, being lovers of dessert, decided to have not one but five cakes of various flavours. We set them up on cake stands we’d collected and decorated them with flowers from friends’ gardens."
THE DRESS
“I have always loved Anna Campbell dresses, but they were only available in Melbourne. I tried on dresses in nearly every boutique in Brisbane, but none felt like my dress, so my best friend and I set off for Melbourne. As soon as we walked in, I breathed a sigh of relief. The funny thing was, the dress I chose was the first dress I had saved a picture of when I started looking!�

Why hello there! So here is: the brand spanking new series that we are running for you, yes you, you lucky wee things! It’s all about styling, how to make that all important theme work for your wedding, your way. The days of the cookie cutter wedding are in the past. These days it’s all about weddings that reflect you, your story, your background, your tastes. Putting your stamp on it gives your guests a chance to be part of something you helped create, something personal, meaningful and special. In this series we will showcase various different wedding styles and themes, giving you some tips and tricks along the way on how to bring them to life and thread a bit of ‘you’ into your big day! WHY HAVE A THEME? Having a theme or style helps to create a different and unique experience for your guests, it allows you to really put your stamp on your big day. It will help to make your wedding different from the rest. A theme is like a little mini brief, it gives you direction and assists in those big decisions and makes them a lot easier. It allows you to easily sew everything together, enabling you to tell the whole story, seamlessly and consistently. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT? To decide on a theme, you need to have a chat with your fiancé. What really makes your heart skip a beat? Are you creative and bold, do you prefer something romantic and whimsical, did you want to play it safe but just be a wee bit unique? Once you have decided on the style, you can start working through a bit of a moodboard, a collection of things you like; from lighting, to tablescapes, outdoor and indoor styling, flowers and the colour palette. Give youself plenty of time, it's the type of thing you want to put down and pick up a week later, and then start culling. You can’t do everything, so pick the bits that you really like and stick to them. Once it's all down on paper, you will have a visual brief for what your wedding will look and feel like and you can then start pulling it together.

with a hint of contradiction
This first column is going to focus on a theme which is very dear to us; ‘vintage with a hint of contradiction’. What’s that you may ask? Well it's all the yumminess of vintage - understated, elegant, graceful, natural, old and beautiful, however with a twist of contadiction - bits of personality threaded through which will surprise and delight your guests, those special details which will bring a smile to people's faces and separate the ordinary and expected from the extraordinary.
Colour Palette Vintage colours are very muted and charming, think duck egg blues, pinks,

creams, greys, dusty beiges, etc. Then choose a colour as your twist ‘pop colour’, to give it that personality and uniqueness. The world is your oyster here - think neon, brights, rose golds, silver, etc.

Flowers
Vintage allows you to have a wide range of flowers. Some say it needs to be restrained to more traditional roses and carnations. But we say, vintage is all about charm and with the twist you can throw in a special detail that will make your flowers pop.

Wedding Mark
We are big fans of creating a wedding mark - be it a word, a symbol or a phrase with or without an image. This is a great way to pull in the ‘twist’. How about woodland animals like owls, rabbits or deer, or if you just want wording, a phrase of your favourite song?"

Stationery Our advice is to keep the design clean, classic and simple and bring the twist in
with how you package or print it. Kraft is a very popular option for a vintage look. Talk to your printer about what you want to achieve and you will be amazed what can be done!
Tablescape Have a think about whats on your tables. Vintage is old and charming.

Mix and match your plates, use your grandma's vases or china. We suggest you work out your vintage look and then build in the twist element which will surprise your guests with the unexpected.

Backdrop A backdrop to the bridal table is really important. It frames the wedding table
and a lot of pictures will be taken of this special place. Choose a cool piece of fabric that gets hung flush with the back of the marquee.
Ceiling How about hanging something from the ceiling such as pompoms made of tulle or

paper in your colour palette. Try a teacup chandelier or ribbons in various shades of your colour palette. Hang them at varying heights to create a bit of visual interest.

URBAN INSPIRATION Contrast rough industrial textures, concrete and unfinished timber with soft, rustic florals for a fresh, contemporary feel. Use a wooden table as a base and work in layers to build up the look, starting with a silver Kraft paper runner. At each place setting, combine platinum beaded chargers with powder blue-edged plates and clear and blue coloured glassware, finishing off with mini terrarium favours made of small lightbulbs. Hand illustrated stationery with an anemone motif and silver embossing brings a touch of added glamour.
To create an urban look with your florals, combine different succulents such as echeveria, haworthia, sempervivum and jovibarba with wildflowers and herbs such as nigella seed heads, anemones, spray snowflake roses, scabiosa pods, senecio foliage, eryngium thistle, dill, flowering mint and oregano.

“Tucked away on the east end of Long Island is a little beach town we absolutely LOVE called Montauk. Since moving to Manhattan three and a half years ago, we have made it a summer tradition to escape the city for our favourite town of Montauk, just past the Hamptons. Home to many famous residents we envisioned a couple that had just tied the knot, cruising out to Montauk in their Jeep Wagoneer for their honeymoon. The couple would stay at Ruschmeyer's (one of our favorite hotels in the area), a summer camp inspired lodge. The hotel is inspired by the property's original function of a summer camp back when it was first built in the 1950s. Our couples stay in Montauk would consist of ping pong matches, hanging out in the teepee, snorkeling at the beach, swinging in the backyard, and relaxing in their camp inspired bedroom complete with hammock.�

AS A STATIONER MYSELF, NATURALLY I'VE ALWAYS HAD AN OBSESSION WITH PAPER AND ALL THINGS STATIONERY. THE DIFFERENT TEXTURES, PATTERNS AND COLOURS DREW ME IN AT A YOUNG AGE. I'VE WORKED WITH THE INCREDIBLE ENVELOPMENTS RANGE IN THE PAST SO I'M THRILLED TO HAVE DEBORAH HERE TO SHARE SOME WISDOM WITH YOU! MR: What do you see as being the current trends in the wedding invitation world? DH: Hobbit weddings… I’m joking, but you will see some trickle down elegance by way of Gatsby-ish style infiltrating the wedding market, taking inspiration from the movie. Pattern will be strong again this year, and we are excited to announce we are releasing another new pattern in collaboration with Kristy Rice called Fiore, which is a mélange of her beautiful hand painted flowers in brighter colour tones. I think in contrast you will also see some pared down weddings as well, fewer details but fabulous. To save on costs we are seeing invitation designs with less layers and more pattern, pattern, pattern! Some are using patterns on the back of their invitations, like back jewellery, it gives an understated elegance to the ensemble.

MR: What's your opinion about people putting their rsvp details on the invitation itself? DH: I was always a bit of a rule breaker as a designer; with the exception of printing 'cash gifts only' or 'registered at' directly onto a wedding invitation, I had a pretty wide margin of what I would do that was outside the considered norms of a wedding invitation. I use etiquette as a guideline, not 'the law'. That being said, back in my grandmother's day, wedding invitations did not include response cards as people knew to respond on their own personal stationery where they shared their joy in the good news and offered their congratulations as well as confirmed who would be attending. As technology evolved, people began using more expedient forms of communicating, like phoning their response for less formal occasions and RSVP cards with pre-stamped envelopes became the norm to ensure getting timely responses from guests. So, stating how you would like your guests to respond directly on the invitation is fine as long as there is room.
MR: Can you give us some ideas about how to impress your guests with your paper goods while keeping to a reasonable budget? DH: Multi-task your items. You can use a favour box at each place setting which can also be used as a name card. Table numbers can have photos of the bride and groom incorporated into them. Menus can also house seating information. Whatever items you choose to incorporate into your overall theme, make it personal. Less can be more when it is well-designed. Use flat cards as place cards and put pens on the tables so your guests can write you a message on the back for your guest book, keepsake box or whatever you want to put them in. MR: Is there a rule when it comes to how many colours to use in your stationery suite? DH: It really depends on the bride and how elaborate the wedding is. Two colours is plenty for a minimalist, but many are using three or four colours on their invitation suites. MR: What colours (apart from white/ivory) are currently popular? DH: I think you will see more gilded wedding invitations using Envelopments shades such as 24KT, Champagnium, Tamarind, Cameo, Sea Shell and Pyrite for those glam brides. Natural Kraft, Pecan Barque and recycled stocks with bursts of colors like Reef or Dahlia, will continue to be strong for the more boho chic bride. Caspian, Aquamarine and Diamond still rule for beach weddings. Location and theme have so much to do with the invitation design as it helps hint at what is to come. I think it is fantastic that today’s couples have so much to work with when it comes to finding details and stocks that really resonate with their style and budget.
